I'm not so sure if I agree with all the other ratings. Ragan is brilliant, hands down. He may be a gifted physicist, bue he is not gifted in teaching. I taught myself most of the course with the textbook. However, I find his conceptual questions extremely good. So teach yourself the course, do his clicker quizzes, and you'll be geared for finals.

Don't let the Phys 101 kids fool you, he goes easy on them. Phys 131 was a pain because he would do very simple problems in class (which are in the text, making going to class kind of pointless). Then on the midterm he will pop questions much harder than anything he's ever taught. Just be prepared if you are taking Phys 131.

He is an amazing professor but you got to listen to each and every word in his class attentively. You need to keep your concepts clear, practice questions after the classes (and ask the ones you don't get!) otherwise you're going to mess up the final really bad. Uses a lot of jargon in class but fancy words don't necessarily teach you concepts.

Very helpful professor (who else replies to an email at 1:30 in the morning the night before a midterm?), but exams are quite difficult unless you have a solid grasp of all concepts and can apply them in challenging questions. Questions on the final felt like questions from Physics Contest exams. Otherwise, he's great. And he looks like Steve Jobs!

If you're not coming from a strong high school physics, take 101 if you can. CAPA (weekly hw) is extremely helpful, but tedious. They're hard questions and you'll make a lot of friends in your attempts to solve them. Don't bother with class, lectures recorded and you can pause them to take notes. Midterm not graded if you do better on the final.

You just need to study really hard, do homework, and pay attention to his clicker conceptual questions. CAPA is manageable if you don't don't do it the night before.

As a student who did not take physics EVER in high school, this class was a horrendously hard for me;; the class is really fast paced and the materials were hard to understand. Though the grading was fair as he curves up your grade; also you can still manage to pass the course even if you screw up your final and the midterm Good luck 1st years :')

Never took Physics in high school, but I found all aspects of PHYS 131 really supportive out-of-classroom support, grading scheme also lets you excel in other areas (textbook discussion, homework, etc) if you bomb your midterm at first (e.g. I got a 40). Amazing lecturer, always makes sure to answer peoples' questions fully. We stan Ragan!

the exams were pretty hard for everyone for labs you're supposed to complete the experiment and the report in your assigned lab period which is annoying, but if you keep up with the textbook readings and try the tutorial questions, it's really not so bad. ragan answers questions really well so ask if you need. didnt find lectures super useful tho

Prof Ragan was great. He really wants his students to succeed. For example our grading scheme was out of 107.5, so in theory you could get 107.5% in the course. His exams are REALLY hard, I failed both of them but he allows for so much extra work to be done that you can get a good grade. Readings, tutorials, exercises helped boost my grade.

The classes consisted of concepts and derivations (despite calc 2 not being a prereq). Midterms and exams are extremely difficult compared to the in-class examples and CAPA assignments. He taught high level physics for years; it's difficult when someone of that level teaches a first year course. This class was more difficult than it needed to be.

Professor Ragan is a fun lecturer, however his lectures will not help you succeed in this class. He rushes through content, gives readings that doesn't help simplify the already hard content you're learning, and no matter how long you study for the midterm/final, once the paper is in front of you, it feels like you wasted your time.
