He's the freakin man!
Mr. Rouse is a really nice guy and can relate to you very well as a student. Overall, he does an o.k. job of teaching but he can very easily start talking over your head. The homework he assigns can be a little complicated, but his tests are pretty easy.
Tests are easy, but his programs are hard as crap.
Great Teacher. He gives you everthing you need to write the programs in his PowerPoint slides, which are posted online. Labs can be difficult at times but the test are easy. I highly recommend his class.
The class actually teaches you some practical programming and the tests are easy. Do the labs on your own and you will get an A.
good teacher; programs can be difficult; go to class and he goes over how to do them before he assigns them; tests are very easy
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IN THE SUMMER!!Easy tests the rest of the year because he gives multiple choice tests.During the summer he feels it is an "opportunity" to find out how much we really learned. In the summer you write programs for a test.It s
Not a very easy class. Good luck. If you have to take this class, you probably have to have him.
Labs are quite difficult. Tests are fairly easy. But he is a sorry human being. If you need one point determining if you get an A or a B or a D or on F he will not give it to you. So don't ask because I did already.
I wasn't good at Fortran so I got a D. This guy, wasn't that bad though. He looks like Jerry Seinfeld and holds the microphone with his thumb and index finger. Funny stuff. Don't get to close though, cause his breath stanks.
Matlab is tough and he doesn't make it any easier. he hardly teaches the material in class. You do most of the work at home or learn from your peers. the book is useless. dont buy it. He needs to learn how to teach in class.
He is not that hard. All the complaints above are from losers who just want a teacher to give them a grade. Work the labs with a friend and get help for the TA's and its not that bad. Tests are trick but not impossible.
I found his class very difficult. Lecutres are not that informative, and the lab assignments can be very difficult. The book is worthless and won't help you a lick. If you know the material, his tests are not too bad.
I didn't like this class- but then again I hate computer programming. Class is ridiculuous for a 2 hour class- should be 3. Lots of work with the labs and the final sucks. Good Luck.
The labs suck, he does a terrible job explaining things in the lectures. I studied hard, did all the labs, and I am going to end up with an 89 :(
He is very nice but the class is so big that even he and 3 TAs is just not enough to get individual help. And there is no way you can do the labs from what he teaches in class. Don't buy the book - it won't help at all.
He makes the labs pretty hard, but if you use the TAs and a buddy from class on the labs, you'll do fine. Tests are tricky.
Lectures do not help. Do the labs and go when the GTA's can help. The test are confusing and difficult. It is very hard to get an A in the class. Most people get a B.
Horrible professor- can't teach at all. Labs are pretty hard, but do-able. Tests are not that bad, but the final's impossible. Never take his word for anything ("this will only take an hour" or "you'll be fine if you did your own labs&qu
GREAT PROF! Tests are straight from the slides sometimes a little tricky. Just go to class do your own labs & actually go through the programming process and this will be your easiest class ever. If you had trouble w/ this class please leave engineering.
I took it in the spring and dropped out because the class was way too big for what they wanted accomplished. Take it in the Summer because you can actually see Rouse and he can explain things better. If you do the labs you pass the tests.
Great teacher! Willing to work with you in most cases and has will allow you to turn in assignments late if you are having trouble, just have to clear it with him first.
The lectures don't help much. Your best bet is to go in the lab and work with the GTAs. The only problem is the GTA's can barely speak english.
Decent teacher. The book's horrible, though, so try to understand what he's saying in lecture. Test questions shouldn't be that bad if you understand the labs. It's a pain, but try to figure them out instead of getting them from someone else.
very vague needs to be a little clearer
this joker can't spell, he always mispells stuff in his slides, and he is very unclear about writing programs. he doesn't tell us half the stuff we need to know, good thing matlab is a breeze.
He should not be allowed to teach. He doesnt tell you even half of what you need to know. If you want to make a good grade in his class just do the labs with the help of a TA and know every detail about the labs
If you are having trouble in this class you are lazy! My little sister could do these programs and she doesn't even know about programming. Mr. Rouse makes this class enjoyable at least he doesn't just baby us like some of the whinners want that have written.
I hated this class! Mr. Rouse is a complete jerk and prides himself on not fully explaining the material. I have done well on labs and tests but that is thanks to the TAs and my own studying. Take the class if you have to but you will throw a party when it is over.
Mr. Rouse is a good teacher. the class is not hard, but will take some time to get the labs done. if you do the labs early in the week you will be fine. TAs very helpful. multiple choice test. gives extra credit. go to class or you will not do as well. he gives hints and short cut in lecture.
Mr. Rouse is a nice guy who relates to you very well as a student, but he easily can talk over your head in class. I made an A in this course, but mainly because of help from the GTA's.
He talks over everyones head. This class is hard. You have to take it there is nothing you can do about it but good luck it is alot of work for a 2 hour class.
Mr. Rouse isn't the best teacher in the world. Even with a good teacher the class would still suck. Not the hardest class at Auburn, but he makes it seem that way.
Rouse is not clear about what he expects. The class itself is fairly easy. Take good notes and write the programs yourself. The TAs will help a lot if you go to see them.
Mr. Rouse does not explain anything and answers your questions with a question. Class in itself is not bad, but he makes it far worse than it should be. If there is any way to take someone else for this class, then do so.
Good professor! Could not have a better teacher for matlab. Is very helpful and his TA are too. Labs can be long, but not impossible. I got a well earned A in the class.
If you learn by someone asking you questions then take rouse. Classes were worthless along with the slides. This class might be easy if you are a computer nerd, but for avg joe, you will have to have the TA's help. Do labs early and do them when you can get TA help.
Terrible teacher. Takes a two-hour computer programming class that is not very hard and makes it that way. Does not help you whatsover and thinks it is funny when you struggle through writing your programs. Jerk
If you have never had computer programming you will be doomed, unless you cheat. I hate computers, never took programming before, so I copied all my programs, first 2 test weren't too bad. Class sucks and is pointless, so just cheat and copy off the kid next to you haha. Rouse is a funny dude though.
Will not help you on your labs
ROUSE IS A WORTHLESS PIECE. CLASS WAS A WASTE OF TIME AND ALL MECH STUDENTS SUFFER IN LATER COUSES BECAUSE OF HIM. OUR DEPT. NEEDS TO TAKE OVER THIS CLASS AND GIVE ROUSE TIME TO GRADUATE AND TEACH AT THE UNION.
Just do the work and go to class and you'll get the grade you deserve. I'm not sure on how much Rouse actually taught me about the program, but by doing the labs you learn a lot, but honestly what do you expect from a comp class taught in a lecture hall. He's your only choice, so make the best of it
Very Rude, If you go for help, he will make you feel stupid, He needs to get fired...he is the only teacher for this class and his Yankee personality makes his class even worse. Beware of this teacher!!
Good teacher...you just have to do your own work...not a class for the lazy...his test are designed to catch lazy students.
This teacher plain sucks he doesnt help you to understands mistakes just rubs them in plus. you have to do everything his way.....what a bunch of BS! Needs to be fired!
I kind of liked this class, although if you miss lecture, you are cut out of the loop on details. He does put slides on WebCT, but they are not that helpful. The best thing to do is buddy up with several people in your class and help each other. PS: watch out for labs assigned over breaks...he pulled that on my class this semester.
Cheated the whole way through. No way I was gonna work hard for a 2 hour class. Rouse is a ****1ng fag. He cannot teach and needs to be fired.
i had no experience at all in computing and aced this class. if you go to class and pay attention, you'll have no problem because he tells you everything you need to know. buying matlab is also a really good idea because going to lab is a hassle and you'll use the program later in engineering.
Well, try to go to class and do the labs but make sure you have a back up guy to get them from at the last minute. The first ones arent bad but the last few are kinda crazy! Tests are worse than the labs and count for a freakin 60% of the class... blah
Rouse thinks he knows everything there is to know and is a jerk when it comes to helping you. He has his TA's grade the labs and everything and they make up crap reasons to deduct points. In engineering, so I had to take it, just glad it's over.
Here is all you need to know: test=60%,labs=40% If you don't struggle through the labs for hours on your own, you won't get very good test grades even if you study. I know b/c I avg. 95% on my labs b/c I copied alot and I got a C in the class. You get what u work for in there.
DONT BUY THE BOOK it is a waste of money. This class is really easy if you pay attention and DO the labs. The labs suck but it is the only way to learn.
Don't buy the book, TA's are helpful and for a 2 semester hour course, too much time is taken up doing the labs. go to classes though, it pays off because of the little hints and bonus points he gives out during lectures. I got an A with 100 homework/80 test average because of bonus points. be prepared to live and breath matlab.
This guy is a moron, truly. For a guy who's been in computer science as long as he has, he seems very ignorant at times.
I honestly think Mr Rouse is probably the most self-indulgent teacher i've ever encountered. With every word he spits out, he somehow makes himself feel superior. If you take this class be prepared to get a lot of emails regarding irrelevant things such as him going out of town or not being able to check his email on a certain day 8=============D~~
Ken is such an ****! He only use these slides never changed year by year to teach. And he will leave all the things to his GTA. He asked all GTAs to grade, anwser questions, do the class design and write programs for him. But he dose nothing! Also he is a jerk that he thinks he is a smart guy, howver he is not. I really hate him!!
The class is not as bad as everyone says. If you go to class and spend the time to actually write your own programs, you'll have no problems. The class slides are vague so you have to go to class but he gives you everything you need
No Comments
very good teacher, is vague but it makes you learn because you must struggle, you can get help from the GTA's in the lab and rousse is a good guy in general and will help you if you need it
this is a VERY hard class. it's not the teacher as much as the material. he is willing to help if you are willing to go to class and put forth the effort- otherwise, don't even ask! the first test and final are VERY hard and the second test isn't that bad. the labs (1 due every week) are VERY HARD!
o.k the material isn't bad but its very time consuming but if your in mechanical engineering you better get used to it because you'll be using it for the rest of your college career. if you go to class do the labs by yourself and struggle through it you'll be ok but the professor is a yankee ****
Rouse 'da Mouse' is a cool guy. If you're a geek at heart his lectures can be entertaining and sometimes funny. Labs are time-consuming, but if you do them all yourself you'll have no problem in the class. DO NOT try to write a program on the due date. He gives loads of extra credit. Don't cheat, he caught 17 people last semester copying programs.
This class isn't so much hard as it is time consuming. 9 assignments, one about every week or so. If you've programmed in any other language, you'll probably just have to pick up on the syntax. He's not the best at explaining the material because he uses powerpoint a lot instead of just showing you examples with Matlab, but he's not too bad.
This class is really easy if you go to class and take good notes. He's intentionally unclear and makes you struggle through the labs, but it prepares you for the exams which are really easy too. There are 9 labs that average together and count less than a 1/4 of the grade. The 3 tests count a lot, but if you do the labs, there a cinch.
rouse is a tool. no other way to put it. his indian TAs do EVERYTHING. Im not exaggerating. His lab instructions are unclear b/c he goes thru and makes little changes so you cant reuse someone else's lab. end result: the lab doesnt make much sense, worst wording ever. and if you get great program, but it has a small crash you get 50/100, thank the
Easy class if you actually show up for it. Take good notes because they help out on the labs and tests. Yes the labs are kind of vague at first, but he gives hints in class and is always willing to help. In short, great teacher and easy class.
He is an overall good teacher. It is important to go to class and take as he gives you hints on the labs. The labs weren't too bad and the tests were pretty easy.
This class is horrible. BORING. Labs are ridiculous. 1st test wasnt bad but they get extremly harder. Hard to study for. holla.
Not so much good. Pretty much the worst class ever and then you have a dbag teaching it, so it is a total suck job.
OK just like everybody else says..you have to do the labs on your own. Don't expect to learn anything from Rouse though, you have to teach yourself. He talks to you like your 4 years old but won't answer even the simplest questions. I think he likes to withold information on purpose to make himself feel smarter (not the best quality in a teacher)
This gut is an idiot. He does not help you on the labs which their are 9 of for a 2 hour class. and the 2 test is very hard. TA do everything, lazy. And does not let you turn anything after 11:55 unless you are near death. Hard labs. Be ready to spend 10 hours if not more on each labe execpt 1.
Only Two Credit hrs! I went to the TAs the first time around who werent much help- I had the hardest time understanding there english. I felt as if I needed a background in Computer programming to understand the work he made us do. I needed to work in a group on just about every lab. Textbook was no help. Only class attendance.
Mr. Rouse is not as bad as everyone says. Matlab is not that bad but you do have to go to class!! He tells you tests questions in lectures. Labs aren't too bad, but do take some time. Tests are easy as long as you study (study Powerpoint slides as well as notes). If you do your own labs, final is a breeze.
Ok he's not as bad as everybody thinks. for as many students as he has and for the material he is trying to teach he does about as good as anyone can do. you have to go to class! first few labs are cake but they get tougher and more time consuming. test were a joke and worth the majority of your grade. he's def not as bad as everyone says he is
Overall the class is not too hard even for someone with no computer experience. Just take good notes and be willing to put in some time troubleshooting the labs. Rouse does seem to get offeneded when people miss class and will make changes to the lab verbally in class if he thinks people are skipping.
Bottom line...those who do well in the class don't have a problem with the guy and those that do poorly will hate him. An OK teacher, but he and the TAs most of the time are either unable or unwilling to give any one-on-one help. Grading on the labs is pretty harsh-and don't expect any useful feedback after they are graded. Good luck...
MatLab is the spawn of satan! Rouse is very boring and does not help. His teaching style does anything but teach you how to work the labs. His labs are not well explained and if you don't go to class you're screwed. He has HORRIBLE GRAMMAR
This class sucks. 2 hour credit for way more work hours put in. Expect a lot of troubleshooting labs. Get help from someone who went through it before you if you are lost, because if you fall behind you are screwed. Exams and final aren't too bad.
Overall, not a good professor. He is not very helpful and even if you go to class you are screwed.

unwilling to accomadate scercumstances.
Well imagine getting a root canal from an ethiopian doctor using fire ants without pain killers. Got that image? That same process is like getting help from T.A.'s and Rouse. They have little to no idea of what they are doing. Expect many arguements about erroneous grading practices from T.A.'s.

the work isn't way too bad, but his teaching style sucks. he beats around the bush way too much even when you ask him about stuff. and he spends about 30 seconds dropping these stupid hints for things you should use on the lab, then he spends the rest of class talking about crap that won't help you write the lab you're working on at all.
Great professor. Generally spends 10 min every class talking specifically about the lab (stud. prblms, or just info). The rest makes labs a little easier. Gives students bonus pts. for vol. to be his examples. Wont give ans. to lab, but shows gives direction. Labs take about 1-3hrs and you get a wk. TAs are hard to understand but stil wort tlkng to
USE THE BOOK! GO TO CLASS! He gives extra cred. for being part of his example in class. I talked to a TA about one of my labs, and got 20 pts back for a misunderstanding. Hard to understand though. Doesn't use book in class, but it is very helpful at home if you know what to look for. Gives great prgrmng examples.
He's a pretty cool guy. He will listen to any problem you have. Just pay attention in class, show up for class, take notes, and you should do fine. i came into this class with very little programming experience and i have an A+ in the class. Just remember that this is college and it won't be spoon-fed to you.
Labs are easy. Test are hard. Final is extrememly hard. All in all, this class sucks.
Rude. Him and his TAs are very unhelpful and if you ever try to point out a mistake they made in grading they hold a vendetta against you. Stay as far away as possible!
MATLAB is awful. You have to teach yourself how to do most of it..Rouse isnt a bad guy though
He's really not that bad. I had no programming experience and got a B in the class. He won't tell you how to do the labs but points you in the right direction. However, the one time I went to a TA for help he was totally useless.
Not too difficult, but it requires you to put in the time. Go to class because he gives good examples and hints on how to do the labs. I recommend starting on the labs the day before they are assigned (or at least before the next class meeting). When I did that my grades were much better than when I didn't.
Go to class and do your own work on your labs and you'll be fine. Also, he reads what you write on this profile.
You absolutely must GO TO CLASS. You might pass or even do well if you don't, but it will be so much less stressful for you if you go to lectures. Rouse wants you to do well if you're coming to class, and he will point you in the right direction and give you REALLY HELPFUL hints if you pay close attention to him. My TA, Ravi, was absolutely no help
Rouse is great, but my TA was awful. He made you feel like you were bugging him if you asked for help (so go to class for notes), and he misgraded my friends' and my labs multiple times. He'd give us a failing grade, when our labs worked fine. Make sure you email your TA if you think your grade is wrong(w/in 7 days)! It probably is!!!
Talks, and talks and talks. Takes a 5-minute presentation and makes it an hour, just because he can. He aint hard, but his examples serve to confuse rather than help. So, if you get'em which you probabaly will, just read the slides and hope you have a friend that will tell you the gay little "tricks" and Labs he gives in class. No friends, S.O.L.
If you've had any programming classes before, this class will be a breeze. As for the professor, he presents the material in a fasion unsuitable for learning programming. He's not that helpful with his examples and makes his class much longer than it should be.
It is a shame that Auburn places 300 students in one prog. class. Rouse's lectures are very simplistic compared to hwk. And one of the TA's, Fangyang, was VERY rude when I went to him. I didn't understand something and when I asked him about it, he just stared at the computer & gritted his teeth like I was such a bother. Avoid this TA! Rouse is OK.
Mr. Rouse is the best teacher you can have. All these people that are whining about him just don't like to think, but becoming an engineer is all about thinking. If you put forth the effort to learn he will help. DON'T BE STUPID AND CHEAT your only cheating yourself. All these complainers need to grow up and thank God there is a professor like him!
Dear Rouse,as I know you read these,I'll just tell you what I thought.Liked the Labs as they taught us how to think and loved the Final as it was a good assessment of actual programming knowledge; HATED THOSE EXAMS, they could have been like the final and assessed skill and knowledge a lot better.
Rouse is terrible at teaching. I have never done any programming before this class. I self taught most of the stuff out of the book and did ok in the class. As for Rouse and his TA's: terrible and can't teach. TA's are annoyed every time you think about asking for help.
Ok, first off MatLab is not easy to begin with. However, Rouse knows this and tries to help. He does examples in class and will answer your questions in class. His exams are tricky but know the notes and MatLab as a whole and you'll be fine. The final shows whether you cheated or not. 2 TAs where good, Jonathan was an ass. Made an A.
If you don't know the basics of how to program you are screwed. The tests are god awful, you would never do any of that stuff in real life. That's what testing a program and Workspace is for, not knowing right off the top of your head what linspace does or how many numbers it's going to count to. All tests should have been like the final!
This class was easy, to me. I had some knowledge of program, though. The first two exams are really hard but the final was easy. The only bad thing, I would say, about this class is that the TA's seem annoyed when you ask for help in the lab. Just act as if you can't understand them and they'll type the the code for you.
This class isn't that bad if you put the time into it and USE YOUR BRAIN. I went to him for help, and be aware that if you go to go to him, make sure you have specific questions to ask. I had no programming experience before this and I got an A because I put the time and effort into it. Go to class and PAY ATTENTION and it won't be that bad.
So its computer programming, its not going to be the easiest thing in the world, but go to class and rouse will teach you what you need to know. I got a 100 on evey lab and did not spend forever doing them cus i listened to his tricks in class. Just be prepared for new stuff and you wont be bad off.
I worked way too hard and got a C. His class examples suck..even if you do go, i have way more important classes then computer programing, he thinks his is soooooo important..i had an A at mid semester but slacked at the end a got a C. Waaay to much work for a 2 hour class, i agree..
Mr. Rouse is a great teacher and I would recommend taking him. His examples are helpful and he is funny and keeps the classes attention. The programs were hard and I spent a lot of time on them, but it was worth it and I learned a lot about programing. I also thought that his tests were fair. Just study and learn how to do the programs.
Not gonna lie, the class is hard. It's one of those classes that if you can get past the stupid riddles and nerdy jokes, then you can do fine in the class. Basically unless you live in a basement and do nothing but play your computer, its gonna be a hard class. And btw...the TA's are absolutely worthless.
Dr. Rouse as a person is a nice guy but the amount of work he requires for this course is REDICULOUS. I spent as much time on his labs as I did studying for Physics! You really have to do all the labs and stay on top of your game in order for the tests to make any sense.
Parts of this class are very difficult. Reports written immediately after finals are undoubtedly biased. Most things are clear, but there are a few things that REQUIRE experienced help. The labs were often released the day after the first TA help day, making it pointless. Use blogs or personal help, NOT the book. I found the challenge rewarding.
Matlab is horrible. The course seems somewhat easy, but Rouse is ABSOLUTELY NO HELP. His in class examples are usefull only the day after an assignment, before you're shooting in the dark. The GRADE YOU GET is the GRADE YOU DESERVE because you earned it/taught yourself. So be proud.
matlab with Mr. Rouse is difficult but not impossible at all. His class is hard but GO TO CLASS and you will get an A or B.
His class isn't hard if you go to class. Frustrating yes, impossible no. Asking for help gives you riddles, but it helps you think. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE and you will do fine. Go to class always
Matlab is the most frustrating course taken to date. He lacks all clarity and sitting in class will barely get the job done. Dont take a class with him if you can get away with it.
As Charles Barkley would say, "He is tuurable!" Rouse is the least helpful teacher I've had the misfortune of having. His advice comes in the form of the most ambiguous riddles. The labs are ridiculous and TAs are no help. Oh well, he's not teaching so be thankful you don't have to sit in class til FIVE and be bored out of your mind.
I think he is gone. I got an A in his class but that came with alot of frustration. The labs are hard because he doesnt tell you how to do everything to do the labs and or expects you to look it up and figure it out yourself. His test arnt too hard as long as you study and take good notes. Dont ask for help. Just go to friends they will help you mo
I think he's gone now, but i'm not sure. The class was hard, but if you go to class and take notes, it is easy to get an A. JUST A HEADS UP, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO DO THE PROGRAMS.
Rouse's class was ok, a bit of fun, a bit of work. Overall, not too bad. His style is somewhat different and he doesn't hand you the answer you're looking for on a silver platter, you have to think and work it out for youself, just like in real life. Some people seem to think they should be awarded an A just for showing up, so they'll hate it.
