He seems serious, but he is very passionate about history. The class is usually taught with power point and lecture with 4or 5 group discussions during the semester.
He seems serious, but he is very passionate about history. The class is usually taught with power point and lecture with 4or 5 group discussions during the semester.
Classes are a little boring. He tries to be enthusiastic and make jokes but people are usually asleep by then. Teaches by powerpoint and puts all powerpoints on blackboard beforehand. A few class discussions, those are ok. Very laid back teacher.
He is a great teacher because he LOVES history. He knows his subject. He does crack alot of jokes, but no one really gets it. All you need to do to get an A is show up, do all your work (which is NOT alot) and pass your tests... I think there are only 2 tests total. It is an easy class. Just dont fall asleep, because that is rude!
Mr. Shafer was an excellent teacher his lectures are direct and to the point. he tells you exactly what you need to know and need to do to get an A would highly reccomend him to everyone.
Shafer is a really nice guy who seems sincere in his interest of history. The class can get boring and his jokes are cheesy but cute. Pretty easy for the most part but for the quizzes you might want to team up with people (theyre online, or at leas for this semester). Just do the work and dont seem disinterested i think is key.
He is so easy, but sometimes he will 'misplace' a student's work. So be careful. The online quizzes are easy. Be careful...half my class got F's last semester 'cuz they didn't come to class or do the work... He also grades who talks and interacts the most in discussions...DO THE WORK!
Took him for Intersession. 2 discussions, 2 essays, 4 quizzes (lots of reading), 1 exam, 1 extra credit assignment, 1 group project. I really enjoyed his lectures. Didn't like the videos, though. No rambling and he made some jokes. He knew what he was talking about, replied to emails, and answered questions. Your work reflects your grade.
Good guy, funny, helpful, cares. Does lecture, atricles each week, online quizes, tests, paper; just a lot of work. You can get by, but its not just a lecture test class. Good teacher no doubt, Dr. Jaffe and Sanderson are much more fun!
He is amazing
Very good teacher. Come to the classes, do the work, and make sure you know what is due and when. In other words, be responsible. This is college people! Don't come and be like, oh I didnt know there was something due today. He was great and very interesting! I would take him again!
His class is SUPER boring. Its easy but super boring. There are 2 midterms and a group project. Just look up the definitions on the studyguide and you'll ace the test. The key is just to stay awake. I took it in summer so it was a 3 hour class. Oh and only 3 hw assignments all semester!
Great teacher! Helpful, responds to e-mails quickly, and all around intelligent professor. There is quite a bit of work (you will need to read, this is college) but if you just do it and actually show up to class you will get a good grade.
Shafer really loves what he is teaching and knows his stuff! Great Professor, a little dry at times and his since of humor is a little out there. Always willing to help. Go to class pay attention and you will get an easy A. JUST NEVER FALL ASLEEP IN HIS CLASS!
good teacher overall, but tends to mumble and wont be very clear about some topics. most things are online, like quizzes every few weeks, and its easy to forget to do it. there are a few midterms, and one paper and presentation at the end. he wont remind you about anything in the class, so look everything up on blackboard.
He seems unenthusiastic, but he will make jokes and try to keep it interesting. You NEED to check Blackboard every day for assignments and reminders; make sure to do all the assignments for a good grade. 1 extra credit opportunity; you should take it for a grade cushion. Overall, a fairly enjoyable class - the discussions can be quite fun.
He was a pretty good professor. The only thing I didn't like was that he wouldn't remind us of any assignments that were due. Absolutely everything is online, so check Blackboard daily to keep up! Overall it was a very informative class, I would take him again. I learned a lot, even though it was sometimes very boring.
He is very helpful and makes history fun and interesting, I would highly recommend taking him. Even though he gave me my first B ever, I learned a lot and I guess that is what matters most.
great teacher... highly recommend him
This is the worst professor I have had. I had to remind him to put up assignments. If I didn't, they weren't posted. Some materials on midterms/tests we wouldn't learn until latter classes. Online quizes don't correspond with class materials. I wouldn't wish this professor upon any person. Save yourself the time and energy and find a different one.
Shafer is a wonderful professor who is passionate about what he teaches. His class is not hard, he just expects you to learn something! Take this class, it is extremely rewarding because you learn alot and have fun! Also he is always on top of his assignments,& is always fair. I took 3 of his classes & got A's in all of them.
This on-line class required some very interesting reading and analysis, but the grading rubric was inconsistent and frustrating to deal with. The same value was given to an initial greeting as to a long test.
Took his online class. He is a very nice man that is consistent with his responses. However, he is pretty unorganized and tends to mix up his assignments. Make sure you log on everyday just to see if anything has changed because there is a huge possibility of it happening. Despite the latter, I would definitely recommend Prof. Shafer :)
Very passionate, uses jokes to liven up the mood, even though they fail most of the time depending on your audience. He uses YouTube & various movies & cartoons and interesting facts, if your a PowerPoint lecture note taker type, this class is definitely for you. Try to pass all the online quizzes & assignments and also try not to be brief. Great class, I liked it corny jokes & all. I learned.
do not take this guy. I think he is a really bad teacher, uninterested in history, and a jerk. I took his online class and he clearly doesn't grasp what an online class means and he sends rude emails about how he thinks you are doing. Im considering making an official complaint at the school because of how he talks to his students is unprofessional
He was a good guy very clear. He helped you along through out the class and you always know what to expect on the exams. Tried to be funny and if you don't laugh with him you at least laugh at him it's humorous and interesting none the less. I'm taking him a second time.
This is by far thee worst Professor teaching at AVC. He is a completely unorganized, and is unfair on grading. He runs his class as if everyone in it is a history major. There is no way to get a 100% on a quiz or final. The hardest class I have taken. I have taken high levels of science that were way easier to understand. NEVER NEVER take him.
Ignore the person below me. I had 6 classes this fall semester and I passed his class with an A. The person below is probably just lazy and has no interest or work ethic. Grading is fair on in class discussions, which I think is awesome since many don't participate in history discussions. I don't want to hear anyone complain I had 6 classes! Easy.
OK first any monkey can go and show a power point for EVERY CLASS. then lams jokes that make you want to scream. Doesn't really teach or review the quizes or tests he hands you a study guide and expects you to have at it. I got a C without really trying but the class over all was really hard to stay awake in.
He is an excellent teacher. Loves his subject, and does a lot of work to teach us. Come to class wanting to learn, and he will definitely teach you. I loved his class, and will be taking another of them. Always responds to emails w/very helpful answers. If you listen in class and study for tests (what a person does in college-not sleep!), you will
He's an excellent teacher, knows and loves his subject, and gives great lectures. He uses powerpoint and makes it available online. He has great videos to bring out points from his lectures. He responds quickly to emails w/very helpful answers. Come to class to learn,& you will definitely not be disappointed. I signed up for another of his classes.
Boring. Makes you watch YouTube videos instead of teaching. Never clear about what he expects. Not a good communicator.
I took the class online. The class was good and I really enjoyed the chat sessions, easy points there. Homework was not difficult, just stay up on what is due for the week and it?s a piece of cake. I missed a few assignments so I got a B. I would really recommend taking this course if you are planning on going on to a four year university; it takes
He's the BEST teacher, especially for those that are actually interested in learning and not just in wasting space in a classroom. I took two of his classes, one of them was online (got As). Both of them were interesting and engaging. He is very clear about the work, and works with you when you have a problem. I Would definitely take him again!!
Helpful but at the same time confuses me and wasn't very nice in an email I received from him.
I took his online class, I thought it was fairly easy. The only real problem I had with Professor Shafer was his email responses. He is very short and rude with his responses. I thought a lot of the assignments were pointless and he changes due dates a lot. He also doesn't always post when he says he will, so you need to check blackboard daily.
Boring. Online quizzes seemed to be 2 weeks ahead of the lecture for the material actually quizzed. Spends half of class time looking up youtube videos vaguely related to the lecture. Never, ever reminds the class to read (electronic only) textbook chapters, despite the tests being almost solely on the textbook. Replies to emails 3-4 days later.
Prof Shafer is very understanding and helpful. He never made me feel like I had too many questions, (and I had many). He always responded promptly.I even gained a fondness of History and I used to hate the subject. While in virtual chat hours I felt like he was right there with us cause his great personality shined through while helping all of us
Professor Shafer is the best history professor i've ever had. He makes the subject extremely interesting. He uses youtube as a visual aide in order to help you better understand the topic being covered. He's extremely funny and his humor always lightens the mood!! Definitely take him, you'll really enjoy his class. I know i did!
I've taken 2 of his classes. I enjoy his lectures,he keeps things funny and adds interest to the class with movie clips that help you understand the topic better. His class is a good class if you are a responsible student. He is very helpful when you come to him with any questions.I've learned a lot from him and will take him again!
Professor Shafer is a very nice teacher who paid a lot of effort to keep all students awake during lecture. He always make use of movies and other documentary movies to illustrate the incidents of history in order to give us a vivid mental picture. More importantly, he is a very righteous professor to each of us without any bias. Take his class!
Would not recommend for an online class. Lots of reading and writing, which is normally fine, but not when he gives you assignments late and you have other classes. Very disorganized. Grades all over the place and then can't explain to you why. I did end up with an A, but it was tough.
A+ Professor!! Took online History 107 and really enjoyed it. He always responded to my email questions. Available once week for online chat. Lots of reading but he keeps it interesting. Grades fair as long as you did the reading. Does require team work with classmates along with debates on subject matter. Even had a year end Pizza Party. Very Nice
Notes/lectures have nothing to do with test. Lots and lots of homework do not do this class if you have a lot of other classes.
He's your typical college professor. He tries to keep students interested. Tests are based off of powerpoints so better study them. Overall he's okay.
It was a pleasure to have a teacher so organized. Be ready to take notes because it is helpful. Wish he would have accepted re-drafts of assignments to better my grades...but I still learned lots!
He is a very nice and helpful Professor. I would take all of his classes!
Very nice man. Definitely knows hs stuff, but so unorganized.I didn't read the book or take notes. His midterm and final are all based off vocab words and an essay question and he gives them to you ahead of time. CITE PROPERLY on the essay and take the group project seriously. I might not take him again, but he is very nice.
Mr. Shafer is a pleasure to work with. He' s well prepared, practical and loves his work. He's even a little funny at times, keeping the class interested in Ancient History. Would love to attend another class History class with him. Keep doing what you do best, Mr. Shafer.
Great guy, cares about his students and what he teaches. Do the 4 homework short essays, the quizes,1 map quiz, and study for the one in class essay and youll get an A. Overall i enjoyed this class and actually learned about big ideals in history(rather then just memorizing dates). oh and he shows lots of fun videos!takehim!
Prof. Shafer is the man. He's challenging, tough (but fair!), and has a real passion for History. There's personal bias, I adore the guy.. he's shy and quiet, but once you get him to open up, he's just a real delight! Emphasis on U.S. foreign policy & not having to memorize names & dates. Don't underestimate this guy & don't take him for granted!:)
Charming and amusing, Prof. Shafer took care to draw students into the world of history and make it more contemporary and personal. He has a real zest for his field and is extremely helpful to all students if asked. Present day Knight! Recommend highly!
Took his online class....Wasn't terribly hard but seemed a bit scattered. Due dates are all over the place, grading is inconsistent and some assignments weren't very clear. Gives an online group project without clear directions but then docks your grade when you don't do what he "expected".
Dont bother buying his book you wont use it. his quizes have nothing to do with his lectures or homework or book but they are easy to pass. hes kinda boring and will put you to sleep. overall i would take another class if i had to but wouldn't want to.
Good instructor, tries to interact with students. First part of the semester was very consistent, second part was a bit chaotic. Over all if you you listen, participate, take notes, read and do the on line quizzes and put effort into the discussions and group project the A is yours. Gives you study guides which are a great help.
Online quizzes have NOTHING to do with anything you learn with class. I got mostly A's on everything and barely passed with a C. Very rude teacher, fell asleep on my groups final presentation that HAD to be 20 mins long. Half the time he throws up a youtube videos that barely relate, other time he puts on boring powerpoints that do not reflect tests
My favorite teacher thus far at Antelope Valley College. I believe he and I were both the class clowns; I'd taken him for HIST 107 as well as 108. He seemed very shy at first until the ice was broken. Then he's a joker. I seemed to have made him laugh a lot.
Professor Shafer is a great and fair teacher. He is extremely smart and exciting about teaching history. He is fun as well. Never a dull moment. Thanks
He is soo boring. lectures, uses power points and not many people participated. He just talked and talked then he tries to be funny which hes not. VERY MONOTONE voice. made me sleepy. but easy. only 3 hw assignments with reading, an easy midterm and a final group paper. i wouldnt take him again because id be there for 2 hrs listening and bored
I took this professor twice, for history 107 and 108. I received B's both times. But en history is really not my thing. Overall I liked this professor and would take him again. He tries to tell jokes and keep it interesting.
he is a really good online teacher. not a lot of homework. the online chat classroom was nice. he really takes the time to do an online chat/discussion, which is cool
Shafer is an amazing professor!!!! He loves his work and cares about his students. He gives work that matters and not just to keep you busy. You will learn so many fascinating aspects with his class, he will leave you begging for more!!! Plan on taking more classes with him since his awesomeness is so rare!!!
His classes are cake but please double check the answers on your quizzes and midterms. In both classes, I have found multiple errors with the answer key. After writing a very detailed email to the professor with screenshots, multiple times throughout the semester, I received zero feedback or acknowledgement of the issue. Very frustrating!
This teacher is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Whenever I asked questions, his response was I wish I had more time to look into this. Isn't that supposed to be his job He doesn't inform you on all of the requirements of his class, and then marks you down on the assignments. Hopefully I'm able to finish this semester with an A.
I think this is the hardest class I have ever taken. I have taken online classes before but this professor is very hard to get a hold of. I made my first post and graded it 2 months later. He grades things very late and you wont even know if you are doing it right or wrong since he takes FOREVER to grade the assignment.
Professor K. Shafer was great. He was very easy to talk to and welling to help when you need him. He is an amazing prof. he is very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. I would take him again.
I missed a day and then showed up late one day. He said that I was not allowed in the class late even though it was one minute. He then counted it as an absence and dropped me. Would not take again. Also, he thought that Germanic and Slavic languages came from Greek. Doesnt know language history at all and doesnt seem interested in subject
he is an ok professor
Prof. Shafer is very nice and understanding. Very intelligent and passionate with his work. A wonderful teacher that cares for his students. He gives you good feedback and I had fun in his class 104.. now i am taking him again in history 107. Highly recommended!
Shafer is an excellent professor! His lectures are fun. He knows his stuff and very kind to all of us. I have been late couple times before and missed class but he is very understanding and nice. I highly recommended him to anyone!!! I am taking him again in 107.
He is a cool professor and easy going.
Prof. Shafer genuinely enjoys what he does and it is apparent to his students. He is an easy grader, and has a very clear grading criteria. As long as you put in effort, this class will go smoothly for you.
Good prof. makes lectures fun and interesting. Assignments aren't too demanding and gets you to think about situations and form opinions. There was no midterm, just a final and some quizzes that he gives study guides for which really help. There is a research paper that he gives extra credit on and will help you with it if needed. I give him an A+
Professor Shafer is a very nice man, I'm a science major so I'm not very into this stuff and just wanted to get it over with. His class was easy, but his lectures were frustrating. Take during summer or intersession. If you like Star Trek, use it to get on his good side! Discussions were kinda fun!
great teacher, his quizzes are a little hard. He shows a lot of videos, he's pretty funny. If you like history you'll like it. He gives you study guides for midterm and final, which is very helpful.
Easy class as long as you read and participate in your discussion groups. His lectures are very boring and he's all over the place when he presents his slide shows.
His lectures are very boring. He's all over the place when he does slideshows but overall, easy class. Just participate in the debates and do you homework.
His lectures are all over the place, and sometimes make you feel lost. There isn't a ton of work, but his grading is really random. I would take someone else if you can.
He's a nice guy but confusing lecturer. He bounces from topic to topic and doesn't seem like he's prepared a lecture. He put us into groups. Each group read different material, never knowing what the other groups read because he would spend 20 minutes talking to each group, not the class as a whole. I feel that I missed some valuable information.
I enjoyed lectures. Dr. Shafer tries to find ways to tie things together with pictures and music which helps put you in the mind frame you need to understand the time period. There was a lot of reading and many written assignments, though some primary documents were hard to understand, it helped me understand the first person views of the time.
Dr. Shafer is a wonderful professor. Expect to have group assignments- I'm not typically a group project type of person but it was refreshing to hear other's perspectives about the homework. Dr. Shafer gives great feedback on the assignments, especially the research paper. What he expects from you is very clear and straight forward. Take him!
He's extremely boring and makes weird jokes. I had him for intersession. He has a weird sense of humor
Paint drying, grass growing, water dripping into a puddle from a small leak; These are just a few examples of things that are unbelievably more interesting than this class. If you have ADHD, do NOT take this class. He makes you buy his own written text book which you never even use, and he seems like he doesn't know what he's doing half the time.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed Dr. Shafer's History 107 class. I took it over the intersession and I am glad I did. His lectures aren't bad, he shows many video clips in the topics we're discussing (gotta live the bugs bunny vids). Great experience. Would take him again.
He's really weird and kinda funny. Tells history jokes. There's 5 article discussions, one 6 page MLA paper w/ one outline along with sources, 4 online quizzes only 15 questions and you get 2 attempts, 1 course description quiz, 1 midterm exam & 1 final, super easy, also 1 student learning outcome quiz, and he also gives extra credit for the paper
I'm not a fan of History. I used to hate taking History because it sounds boring to me but after taking this class I was changing my mind. I learned a lot of fantastic thing that I didn't know before. He's so HILARIOUS. He always tells some jokes before class to give you more energy. He makes class more interesting. Easy test + study guide given.
He is a wonderful teacher. Answers emails back in a timely manner. Gives great feed back on all the work you will do in class. Don't skip class, not only will you miss a lot, he does take roll every class. If you need help ask :) he is there for you. He also loves the subject so he is always happy to come to class and has funny jokes. amazing!!!!
Professor Shafer is wonderful, he always starts the class with cheesy history jokes. He assigned articles, online quizzes and gives study guides for his test. Theirs one big paper but he provides interesting topics to choose from. And he's extremely approachable, always willing to answer questions and participation is crucial in his class. Speak up
Mr. Shafer is so much fun! Take him if you want to have the giggle during class for sure. He is very animated in his lectures and he appreciates the good things in life from the olden days. The tests were not too hard, matching. Take some notes. And there is some reading for group discussions which is mandatory to be prepared for but they are easy!
He tries to make class fun. He plays funny videos and tells jokes and fun facts to help you remember things and get the day started. It isn't hard at all as long as you do the work you will pass. He uses blackboard for the quizzes and does some articles that you have to bring to class for discussion.
Dr. Shafer has a clear passion for history and it makes his lectures fairly enjoyable. His humor is cheesy but you get used to it. I liked the group work during discussions and honestly feel like I gained a lot of perspective by taking his intersession class.
His lectures drag on but he tries to be funny and incorporate videos to make the time go by. He makes it seem like he is strict but is a very passable class. Easy A if you know the material. A lot of stuff is on quizlet. I never used the book. Also, not a lot of work in the class. Really simple.
Shafer is cool. He says a bunch of jokes before starting class. But, sometimes he doesn't complete his sentences and you don't know what he was going to say.... and it's really frustrating. He knows his history, and really wants you to learn and have fun and just get an A. But, you'll definitely have to work for it, it's not easy!
Boring lectures. He has zero energy- i about fell asleep every class But an easy A
Dr. Shafer is one of the best history teachers. He completely shows his passion through his lectures. Literally looked forward to his class because our daily epic rap battle he would play before the lectures. He was very interesting, I recommend anyone who wants to really learn the material. He was not boring at all and always kept it real.
You wanna learn History? You wanna pass the class? You wanna be able to remember what you learned after you leave the classroom? Take Dr. Shafer! Trust me on this! You won't regret it and all of the losers that say otherwise are exactly that... losers! They don't realize what a gift Dr. Shafer is and probably haven't had any other history professors
Dr. Shafer was great overall! Textbook is accessible online and power points are in canvas. If you have a sense of humor then you would enjoy his history jokes and the rap battles are hilarious. If you show up and do your work then it's an easy A. Don't expect for a good grade if you don't work for it.
Dr. Shafer is one of the most enthusiastic History Professors' I encountered. His work is artistic. He uses all three: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, to learners. His goals are to have you learn the material. Easy A, free book, and he stays after class waiting for students to have questions. He wants to know your work ethic; extremely honorable
I found him boring. Someone should bring him caffeine. I learned a bit but not really from his lectures. All he did was lecture - no class activities. There are other history instructors I would recommend, just not this one.
I don't recommend taking this professor for history he's a good teacher and all but his notes and lectures are all over the place and its just too much. And everything is on canvas but he's too confusing.
If you are ready for a laugh please take this professor. He's clear on what he's looking for from his students when it comes to the assignments. No book to buy, it's provided for you through a link. Power point lectures, so if you are the type of student that types your notes or wants to print them out you're able to do so. DEFINITELY A+ TEACHER!
If you do the work, you'll do fine. Dr. Shafer is fair and connects with his students. Communication is key.
Prof. Shafer, for some may be dry in voice, but, to me, he's cool. Material seems dry, but, perspective is needed when learning about the material. Younger millenials need to learn this. Can't knock Shafer for effort. Will take part two next fall 2018. More epic rap battle videos. Weaver, John C, hist-world civ.
I thoroughly enjoy Dr. Shafer's World Civilization I class. There was a lot of classroom participation, topic discussions, article reviews, YouTube Videos, and Epic Rap Battles of History. The book, powerpoint presentations, and quizzes are available through Canavs. Expect to do some writing. Midterm and final are essays and multiple choice.
I learned a lot from his interesting lectures. Plays fun videos. I recommend taking his class. He cares about his students. He is AWESOME!I I would take his it he history courses.
Boring . Not much more to say
He's a good teacher, gives you plenty of time to do your things, is practically clear in what he wants from his assignments. Course was overall easy if you know what you are doing. If you aren't passing or find his class difficult, you could be "mentally challenged" or simply you don't apply yourself. Plus he plays Epic Rap Battles of History!
I took him over intercession, he'd lecture Monday-Wednesday. Thursday's were meant for group discussions of the homework he gave us on Monday. During lectures, he'd make jokes, give info on the topic, and show short videos. His homework was 2 pages, easy! His tests were alright, didn't study much and passed! A great teacher making the class fun.
I took History 107 during the intersession Monday through Thursday 3 hours per day. The professor kept the material interesting and easy to follow. He started each class with humorous things from history which made it fun. He loves history and added his enthusiasm to his teaching.
Started out well, but he never posts his assignments on the school learning site in the proper area. He also gave our class the wrong quiz twice, and did not tell us this in class, he only told us on the school site. His in class teachings are good, but he must learn how to properly learn how to use the online site.
It was a fine class. Hes okay. His lectures are not too bad to follow along, and you learn a lot. Hes really cheesy and corny. Overall, easy class for intercession. Stuck to the schedule he outlined. The topic discussion articles were insanely long and boring though. His tests werent too bad. His study guides were the bomb and totally helped
I enjoyed Dr. Shafer's class. I took him for interession, I had no troubles keeping up with the class. He was pretty entertaining with his lectures. Best way to keep up with this class is to take good notes during lectures.
i took his honors class & all i gotta say is if dry wall was a person.. LOL. but other than the fact that he'sboring, hes fine. just do his assignments, and show up for his lectures and you'll get an A. he literally gives you the questions for the midterm and the final ahead of time AND he grades pretty easy LOL.
I loved History 108 with Shafer! He has a 3-minute rule where if you are late past three minutes you're locked out of the class. Be sure to participate in his lectures and class discussions as he will grade you better. I was in the honors class so he did have higher expectations for my class, but the study guides he gives for tests are helpful.
Clearly passionate about teaching History. Due dates are constantly changed with late notice. Post assignments on Sunday when they due on Mondays. Grades like an English teacher.
This teacher was very interactive. He does require you to be there, but he makes learning and lectures fun with his enthusiasm. He helps you take interest in learning, is very clear on what is to be done and as long as you do it, youll pass the class no problem at all. Hes approachable and interactive and easy to get a hold of for any questions.
Professor Shafer is very understanding and cares about his students. I was hesitant to take his class in the beginning because of the work load but I end up loving his class. There's 5 article discussion, 4 article review, 4 online quizzes (2 attempts) one 6 page essay with outline, 1 course description, a midterm and a final. Plus extra credit
I would say Dr. Shafer is an alright teacher but I see better and awesome teachers and i'm not saying he is terrible but Dr. Shafer is not the best teacher or professor in AVC. I would recommend him for HIST 104, 105 or HIST 107 he teaches those classes and all u do is his quizzes, discussions and other assignments he posts. I rate him 3/5.
many discussion assignments that require lots of reading, quizzes that are common sense tbh (quizlet can help) , lectures amidst corona were extremely boring, midterm and final (only real tests you take) were very easy, as they were "fillintheblank" common sense answers. Though for the short essay questions, you've really got to put effort in them
An amazing Professor who is very passionate about teaching History. Participate and you will learn. As with any class there are assignments and deadlines, if you put in your work there is no reason not to get a good grade. Fair and cares about his students. He enjoys answering questions and is very patient. He deserves recognition for his efforts!
Taking this class was a great experience for me, this professor wants you to know history and love it like he does! I can say I truly love history. If you want to know history from an overall viewpoint take him and you will not be disappointed at all. I will definitely take this class again in a heartbeat.
History has always been controversial brought by difference of opinions and I think he handled that pretty well with the materials he chose for us to analyze. I actually didn't expect to learn as much as I did due to taking him online because of the pandemic but I really did enjoy his class. He is overall a good History prof in my book.
Workload could be heavy at times, and lectures also dry at times, but overall, Professor Shafer was intelligent and interesting.
Dr. Shafer is a very understanding and caring professor. I learn most from his article reviews and discussion post. Just get ready to read.
Lots of reading and boring lectures. Midterm and Final both have short essay questions. Tough grader: He grades like an English teacher.
He is super passionate about history so you will learn a lot, and he has you relate history to current events via critical thinking. Powerpoints are great, and he trys to make the class enjoyable. I would take him again.
Professor Shafer obviously cares about history and its relevance to our lives. He also cares about student success .
He was dry. But, he was a very genuinely caring man.
honestly lectures are really dry, and the tone of his voice really doesn't help. he will waste class time showing unfunny memes and videos not related to the class. he is an extremely slow grader and very picky. gives too many assignments that even he cant keep up with. plus makes you do extra side assignments that dont even count toward yourgrade.
I enjoyed Professor Shafer's 104 class. I took this class during Fall 2020 semester. There was a lot of work involved, but if you do the readings and participate in class then it wasn't to hard. I didn't a good grade due to my lack of time management. He genuinely tried to get students involved, but was having a hard time most of the time, though.
Professor Shaffer loves history and you could tell through his lectures not to mention love his historys rap battle videos I really learned in his class he was so informative
Dr. Shafer, Your class is amazing, I love how you start class with Looney Tones in the beginning and making the class as fun as it is for our desire of learning history. What I like most about your class is the discussions they make the class open minded. Best history class in AVC.
Assignments arent hard at all and are easy to complete. However he over-assigns which leads him to grade ALL assignments at the end of the semester. His lectures are very dry and boring. I was a student who always participated and turned assignments on time and still never got on his good side. Just kiss up to him like other students did.
Favorite teacher at AVC. Lectures were awesome and he gives the class a chance to discuss topics. Super nice guy and willing to help out. You write a lot in this class and do a paper. I highly recommend taking any of his classes.
In Dr. Shafer's class the names and dates are not as important as the why and How. The reasons for history that has been made is far more important than the dates and names. Definitly a scholar and a great profesor. Highly recommend taking his class.
Prof Shafer is great. He cares about his students and his class is easy. Follow instructions and turn in everything on time and you'll pass the class with a good grade. He likes to put videos a lot, participate on article reviews. His lectures can get boring sometimes. He provides the textbook.
This class is very unorganized and ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend it, it's frustrating and not a good college experience. He has most assignments on the syllabus so u have to refer to the syllabus instead of right where it says assignments on canvas. He uploaded the wrong final like 2 days later he said whoops wrong final.Attend a different class
Love Dr Shafer. Took both 107 and 104 with him and passed with an A in both. The lectures are fast paced and a little unorganized but he gives great visual aids and wants you to do well in his courses. I'm taking his 105 course in the fall and am excited because he is such a great teacher.
Dr.Shafer was so awesome, I took him again the following semester! He had great class icebreakers, and would take the time to hear out any student who reciprocated interest in the lecture. Debates were always a blast to be a part of. Just make sure to keep on top of assignments and one important essay near the end of the semester. Fantastic guy!
deliberately fails his students. we all took a quiz and received an F on all quizzes. when we confront him, he says he will fix it but then turns it into a missing. we confront him again and he turns it back into an F and leaves it like that. he puts a lower grade on all assignments then the grade we should have received. he never fixed our grades
This professor is just okay. Definitely a super easy class. I didn't like his teaching method at all. I dont think I learned anything during his lectures. I did learn on my own time while doing article reviews. Lectures were unorganized. A really slow grader too. I'm still waiting for him to put grades in from months/weeks ago.
Honestly he is a great teacher. He really just wants you to understand and know the history not the dates and names. Just do the work and you will pass. It was hard to understand since he goes off subject a lot but easy class.
Professor Shafer is an incredible history teacher. I took all of his classes and I wish I could just have him as my teacher for the rest of my degree. The class was very easy if you did the homework and participated in class. He was very easy to communicate with especially if you had a problem. He kept the class lighthearted and fun.
Non-stressful environment. Funny and kind, commonly plays videos relevant to units such as cartoons and speeches w/ fun class debates Emphasis on article reviews, (4) quizzes, and Canvas discussions for most grades Class isn't about dates, but understanding *why* events happened Two tests, not hard, but do have a bit of writing Would recommend
To be fair I took him for a 6-week online class however, This class was not the greatest, Most of the grade is based on discussions required to respond. Had a quiz and a discussion due on the same week as a 20-slide project and also had a final. Not tech savvy, Final had some questions with no answer boxes and his turnitin will tag citations on PP.
This professor was good for the most part. Because a lot of updates were happening, it was stressful to get assignments in but they weren't too difficult. We got extended time for the final but it was still a lot. Another thing is that he never responds to emails. He did offer zoom meetings every week but I worked late those days.
Very MEH. Final assignment is very confusing because the rubric is set up as it is for an essay but it was a slideshow presentation. Was not clear on instructions tbh. Other than that hes OK
Where to start with Dr. Shafer? He starts every single class by bombarding you with boomer history memes and vaguely sexual jokes, then segues into a low effort lecture. His grading is haphazard and he puts no effort into checking his own criterion, in my class he knocked multiple students for not sharing a sutori when they did. I could go on...
Dr. Shafer is great. He's very passionate about history, and you can see that in his lectures. His class isn't about dates, it's about the "why" and "what's affected?" There's an article every 3weeks followed by an in-class discussion. lectures, quizzes, and a research essay project too. One thing I will say is that he does have a monotone voice.
Does not grade on time. Most lecture days, we only watch videos which can get boring. Exams are easy--follows the study guide. The group discussions were fun at least.
Strongly recommend Dr.Shafer. The articles were interesting, he would answer questions, and he's very passionate about his class. He does take a while to grade, but it shouldn't be an issue if you follow the requirements.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class, I was invested in every lecture. It could get a little boring at times, I can look past that. I learned so much and had such a great time, I would definitely take this professor again. There wasn't much work, but was plenty of time given for homework and projects. If you want a good history professor, take this guy!
He's the picture perfect representation of a good history professor. I wouldn't call him a 5 star by any means, but he was definitely better than "mid". Just pay attention in class, do the homework, and prepare for the tests before hand. Sit back and enjoy his history history lessons and the Epic Rap Battles of History videos. Also find a hw group.
DO NOT TAKE FOR ONLINE CLASSES!!!! I am not sure about in person classes because he seems to have great reviews. But I took his online course. And The layout is completely confusing. He uses a third-party website to submit discussion boards and jumps back and forth between the two which makes it hard to keep track of. He does not respond to gmails
Professor Shafer creates a dynamic and interactive course that engages students in making history accessible by connecting historical events with contemporary issues, encouraging critical thinking, meaningful discussions. His dedication makes him an outstanding. I'm grateful to have lerned many new things from his class. I would defenetly reommend.
Dr. Shafer is a decent professor and can provide a good experience. His work load is average, he also gives feedback on the assignments. He holds you accountable for deadlines, so make sure all work is turned in on time. Modules can be confusing to navigate, overall this class is simple. He takes a while to grade assignments, but I'd recommend him.
I took professor ken for fall 2024 , I recommend him his quizzes are easy and he gives you the text book online , all his lectures and projects are on a third party program . He responds quick through email . Great professor!
If you find the green book exam or any other assignment difficult from him don't take him. You"I'll better off taking an other history professor for history for your history requirement. He lacks motivation, energy, drive, commitment, and passion for the classes he teaches.
Professor Shafer's class is a great option if you're looking for a low-stress history course. Engaging lectures, relevant discussions, and easy assignments make it a valuable learning experience. unstuck AI was also a helpful study tool alongside the course materials.
Extremely caring and took time out of his own day to help when requested, always did his best to have fun with lectures and brighten everybody's day in the morning.
The most disorganized professor I've ever had has an outdated syllabus. I really wanted to like him, but students often had to correct his unusual 525 point grading system, which is disappointing for those of us who are genuinely trying. Save your time, money, and effort. Take any other professor for this course. the good reviews here fooled me.
He grades strictly on minor details, which is problematic since he is often disorganized and apologizes for simple mistakes in emails often. It is unfair to lower grades over unimportant things like discussions. Also, notice how his reviews are repetitive almost as if he wrote them. This class is a red flag .Trust & Don't waist your time as I did.
He is soft-spoken and lectures can feel slow to get going, his grading can also be tough. However, the assignments themselves aren't too difficult and he tries his best to make the material interesting. He also provides thorough grading criteria and genuine feedback. Overall his class has grown on me.
Frustrating when you feel your hard work is being judged too critically or points are deducted for reasons that don't seem significant. Sometimes, teachers have very specific expectations that aren't always obvious, and that can make it hard to understand their perspective.
The work is doable if you are trying to get the credit, and that's it. You can take other classes with it like I did, but I think that's only if you're not too worried about getting a perfect GPA/grade. Otherwise, the professor seems chill, even though he's a strict grader. I got what I needed, and now I'm a step closer to my degree
RUN, don't walk RUN from this professor. DUDE, this guy is so dang disorganizing within canvas and has outdated assignments that kinda mess with your grade. I had to email him to fix it and he yet didn't fix all of it. He is pretty passionate about teaching history but this guy has like issues with technology when it comes to canvas..
I prefer you not take this professor. I had issues with attendance and was dropped although I showed up to class. He is a very messy professor and has issues with technology. He's teaching is also not that great of course you can tell he's really into history but again HE CANNOT TEACH. His grading is very off as well. DoNOTwaste your precious time
He wasn't the best but he wasn't the worse. It took him awhile to grade the first three weeks of work, and when he did he gave me lower grades on the same mistake something I could have prevented if he graded before hand. He also doesn't give you a rubric for the assignments so if you don't understand assignment email him or yolo it.
This class was very easy. There is a decent amount of work but everything is very easy to complete and doesn't take much time. For tests he gives you study guides which are identical to the tests and lets you make a cheat sheet for the tests which made test days not stressful. Follow the instructions and you will get an A.
There's a good amount of projects and discussion posts that take up time to read and reply to, but overall Mr.Shafers class is passable provided you can retain the information given. He does a great job with his online presentations, and he really does like history. Don't slack on his Sutori project! It will take time if you want to do it right!
Really good professor, very kind and understanding as well. Overall easy class. Not a lot of assignments however they are mostly writing assignments. As long as you read the chapters it's all really easy.
Prof Shafer is a cool guy and very passionate. The work is easy so just participate and keep an eye on due dates because it can get confusing but he's adaptable and will work with you. He is easy to reach through email or just talk to him after class because sometimes the instructions are confusing. Show up do the work and you will get an A.
