A great professor, Dr. Strothkamp makes general chemistry interesting and applicable. He's approachable and hilarious- he wants to help you understand concepts and succeed in chemistry. Tips for doing well (the same for any class): do the problems he recommends from the book and always prepare for exams using his practice exams.
Lectures were pretty clear and understandable, but test performance didn't reflect what was actually learned. Average in a class of 200 students was a D on every test. Only have 1 hour to complete test, which adds a lot of pressure to an already stressful exam, and doesn't reflect actual learned acknowledge. Many students wouldn't even finish.
For the first poster (31515), you're way off. I was in the same class as you, and got an A that I didn't have to completely bust my back for. Sure, his tests are difficult, but they DO reflect what we're taught. In fact, he gave us exam review guides about a week before each exam, which were VERY similar to the exams. It's conceptual, but fun
He is a talented speaker and the lectures were entertaining. Material is fast-paced and deep, so get your thinking cap on. Tests are very intensive and difficult, but he is a very fair grader and borders on compulsive when it comes to helping his students. Highly recommended if Gen Chem is required for your major.
Ken is like a silly, Star-Trek-obsessed elf that loves to digress into biochemical applications of the material learned in lecture. Always pestering students to come and visit him during his office hours and sending emails via D2L to keep everyone in the loop. Practice exams nearly identical to the real deal, use them (and his "probs of the week".
Ken is a super funny dork that is passionate about chemistry. My email inbox was constantly clogged with emails labeled "ken strothkamp" that invited students to approach him for extra help and provided me with good study guides. He is super approachable and cool guy with lectures that are entertaining and he really cares about his students success
his class is boring and confusing. Practice tests don't help at all. Test also long and just in an hour. Once average for the midterm was 45% which is crazy. Don't take this class if you are not really interested in reading the whole book yourself
In his lectures, Ken is a perfect balance of his directness, enthusiasm, and humor. He consistently recommended that we come to him first, either in person or over email, if we had questions or needed review. I didn't particularly like chemistry beforehand but with Ken as my professor I quickly learned to love it.
This guys lectures in class are long and they don't make sense. I often go on youtube and watch Tyler Dewitt videos because those help me more than professor Strothkamp. Also we move a chapter a week in class, so if you need some time to sit down and comprehend what you are doing Ken is not your guy.
I think Ken's lectures are okay. He does focus a little too much on the history of certain things (which is never important or on tests) instead of examples but he does do a few examples. I think the only reason I'm surviving this class is because I took (and understood) high school chem. His tests are tough though. Recommend if you know chemistry.
Lecture's are ok. Definitely essential to passing, he goes over practice problems in class. I only know what's going on because I took Chem in high school though. Practice problems are a must, and he does not give as many examples as he should, especially in chapter 7. Overall pretty good teacher given the amount of information shoved into 10 weeks
Run, don't walk, in the opposite direction of this professor and his classes. Unless of course you like teaching yourself. His lectures consist of him tracing circles with a laser pointer on an overhead projector. He doesn't do practice problems in class, the homework has little to do with the tests, and there were errors on every exam key. Run!
I've never worked so hard in a class before, but I think that just might have something to do with the nature of the subject matter. I went to office hours multiple times over the course of the term and Strothkamp was very helpful. That said, be prepared to spend a lot of time learning chemistry outside of class.
Reads off lecture slides for every class, have to do a lot of learning for yourself outside of class. Lectures are monotone, often goes off on tangents for an entire class. Grades on a big curve.
Though a friendly guy, Ken is not a professor I would recommend. Tests are based off of content that is glazed over in lectures and helpful practice problems in class are rare. You must do the D2L practice problems if you want to pass the tests. Mean test score is always about 55. Has a weird grading process that is not a curve.
Great professor, tough material.
Strothkamp is a Professor that knows a great deal about chemistry, and it is clear that he cares about his students, more than can be said about most professors with a class of this enormous size. His lectures can either be on the boring side or helpful depending on the chapter. Bottom line, just grab your textbook and get ready for the HUGE curve
This professor is extremely frustrating at best, you are told the first day you don't need to memorize any picky formulas for the tests and that partial work will be fully counted on exams, both these turn out to be both entirely false. And the practice exams hardly match the real ones, unless you are already very aware of basic chemistry avoid.
He posts optional weekly questions on D2L and I highly recommend spending time on those. I did best when I repeatedly worked on them because they are in his tests. He is a nice guy and curves well. His tests are huge, don't be surprised if you run out of time. I feel like he grades on a strict B curve.
Knowledgeable, approachable, efficient. Brilliant professor, very clear expectations, and his lectures are a healthy balance of serious and conversational. He gets down to business and presents the material in a very structured, methodical manner. Answers questions without so much as a hint of condescension. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
Tests occasionally go beyond the material that is covered in class, and on the practice exam, and challenged me to think in the moment of the exam, rather than relying upon preparation, and my preparation was thorough to be certain. Strive for conceptual understanding, and practice many problems. These are the keys for succeeding and I got A's.
Horrible class. He gives a quick lecture about material you're supposed to master, gives you no opportunity to ask questions, and constantly belittles the class during the lectures - implying that everyone needs to study more, etc. I had a 4.0 up until taking this class but now I'm wondering if I'll make a B. Go somewhere else for this credit.
Fair teacher- gives extensions when students ask and a good curve. Got an A by just going t 3 lectures. But when I did go to lecture, we was funny and goes through the material well. For other people who do not do well with chem, go to lecture. But also, intro class is always easy. Text book is DEFINITELY recommended for online homework and exams.
If you really want to LEARN GenChem, this is the Prof to take. No note sheets for tests, gives plenty of extra work to do, and will not make it easy. If you are taking this course to fulfill a requirement, DO NOT TAKE his course. Take another Prof's because they will likely allow note sheets for tests. Which is a grade saver, as we all know.
I took this as a condensed 3-week term. I do NOT recommend this unless you have a very strong chem background. However, Ken is great! He had daily office hours and problem sessions for extra practice/clarification. Online HW is a pain, but all classes use it. He posts a problem of the day that are similar to exam questions. Answers emails quickly.
Excellent teacher. Learn how to adaptively use the concepts to think critically on the spot in science fields. Far more difficult than other teachers 2 semesters. Like punching bricks of butter then coming across a real brick and hurting. Which is outstanding when your goal is to applying it to the real world, but strenuous for the grade achiever
There's a lot of material & it moves very quickly. He spends some portion of every class browbeating students for not taking the class seriously enough. Avg in class of 215 is <50%, but that's our fault for not being trust-fund kids with loads of free time to attend office hour/problem sessions + having other classes. Blew up my GPA on this one.
His test review guides are nothing like his tests. Only way to do extremely well is to go to his problem sessions which are schedule during other class times. 2/10
Just sit down and do the homework. Try your hardest not to get sick during big tests, he will interrogate you and ask for every form of proof. It is hard to build a lasting relationship with him as a professor and to seek individual help, as he is busy, email him if you have questions.
I think Ken is a good teacher. This is a hard class and you have to work. If he says "this is important" or "do lots of practice problems" DO IT!! He gives you the tools to succeed and you have to take advantage of them. Read the textbook, do all the practice problems. If you are lost, ASK FOR HELP! If you put in the effort, you will succeed.
Ken is a very sweet, caring man but this class is so tough. For being a "prep chem" class, we're learning what gen chem is doing. Half the class failed the first 2 exams (out of 3) and no one understands what's going on ever. He just lectures and throws something new every class. Maybe I just suck at chem but more than half the class is lost!
I understand that the point is to weed people out. He would spend a good amount of time berating us for not being A+ students. His exams were hard, granted a few succeeded. But he deliberately made it hard then would curve it heavily. I suggest you take Sheagley's class if you can. You will be up all night trying to pass, just know it will be hard.
Ken is an amazing professor with outstanding lectures. If you care about chemistry, this is a good class to take, but if you dont like chemistry, or do poorly, you will have an extremely difficult time taking this class with any professor. The tests are difficult; however the exams are always curved and so you usually get a letter grade higher.
Ken was the best Chemistry teacher I've taken. He is so adamant about letting students know early that it's a tough course and the only way to do well is to do problems all the time as much as possible. He holds problem sessions during the week where you can come for an hour and work in a group on a worksheet. He's definitely in it for us
Squeaked-our an A-. This was the hardest class Ive takenand subsequently, the most Ive applied myself.
The layout of the class is very clear and straight forward. It is a tough class with a lot of information to remember, so be prepared to study and practice the material. Take advantage of the tools he provides and stays on top of the PODs. He posts class material online, so you can still study the material if you miss a class/problem session.
Nice guy and very willing to help but his tests are extremely difficult. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. Be prepared to study and work hard for a decent grade. Go to his problem sessions and do the POD's - both are very helpful.
I had him for chem 199 & took him again for chem 221, both times I barely passed. His tests are super hard & when the class does terribly he only blames us and not himself. All he does is lecture us and consistently gets off topic. He talks more about the courses you need to talk if you wish to continue in chem than he talks abt the actual material
Ken is a good teacher but he makes you work for it. Read the chapter before class, do the in chapter practice problems AS YOU ARE READING. If you are prepared for the lectures they will be very helpful. Do as many practice problems as you can. Don't bother memorizing anything, focus on the actual chemistry problems and you will do great! Good luck.
Ken is a great teacher. He cares that you understand the material and gives ample opportunities to be successful in the course. Success in Chemistry comes from hard work and doing practice problems. Do every practice problem he gives you - - if you still feel uncertain--do the practice problems in the book! I read all the chapters, as well.
He actually really cares about students learning the material. If youre able to solve the Tuesday problems(extra day for problems that he offers outside of class) you should be fine; he uses a lot of those problems for his exams.
Very hard tests, go to problem sessions, go to office hours, get a study buddy, he REALLY wants you to learn Chemistry and won't let you get away without understanding it. Nice guy, wouldn't take a class from him unless I wanted to be a chem major.
Ken is a very passionate teacher, but he never really went into depth about certain topics. The class is really fast-paced and if you don't come to class once you miss out on a lot. When students ask questions in class he is passive-aggressive and makes you feel stupid. If you have the option of taking Chemistry with anyone else, do it.
This instructor is probably the worst educator I have ever encountered in my life. He claims to be open and accessible, but in one-on-one settings, over email, or his smaller problem solving sessions, he has a tendency to look at students like they are idiots, and can barely conjure the basics of human kindness in his interactions. Demotivational.
Sadly this was the only professor to teach CH 221 for winter term, and even more unfortunate that he is the only professor to teach CH 222, if I even pass this class. The lectures don't really teach much, all the important information is from stuff to do outside of class, when I'm already slammed working full time & taking other difficult classes.
Extremely rude when you ask questions. Laughs when students get questions wrong. Makes you feel terrible about not understanding material Belittling and stuck up
Has weird curves when grading but when it comes down for your final grade, he decides willy nilly based on his personal opinion. Lectures cover nothing that you need to know for tests. Assigns an impossible amount of HW each week and when you ask for help, he is extremely condescending and passive aggressive. Tests are extremely long as well for 1h
I have never seen a professor so bad in my whole college career. His exams are terrible, he gives almost an impossible amount of work to do in only one hour and the class average is usually below 40%. He says that if you get a 40 then it will be equivalent to a C but it won't it will be equivalent to 40%. He is supper irresponsible, DON'T TAKE HIM
If college was a comedy, this would be the star attraction. Ken sends many classwide emails calling his own students idiots, and in one-on-one sessions will grill students on things they stated they do not understand and refuse to help them when they cannot answer correctly, then wonders why nobody wants his help. Oh, and the class average is a 55%
Dr. Strothkamp is one of the most brilliant people I've ever seen. Hes a machine. His lectures are tough but he has an endearing demeanor that seeps through most of the time. Class averages are about 50% on exams. Just because you study 24/7 does not mean you are going to get a good grade. This is by far the hardest class Ive taken.
His class is by far the hardest general chemistry class I have taken. He incorporates a lot of biology into his lectures and tests. His tests are really hard even if you study because his tests require more applied knowledge than plugging in to solve. Take only if you have to.
Nothing you do will prepare you for his exams. I did every POD and homework assignment twice in addition to a bunch of other reading and problems. On his exams, he uses large biology problems that have never been covered. I have studied harder for this class then any other class and average 55% on exams. Same with rest of class. AVOID HIM
Read the text book and do all the PODs and homework. I got an A because Ken is always willing to help. I ask him questions through email anytime and any day and he answers quick. if thats not enough we usually do one on one zoom meeting which other student are welcome to join, problems session where there is a worksheet he will show how to answer.
I really liked professor Strothkamp, I had him for Chemistry 1 and 2. His tests can be really hard if you don't pay attention in class. However, he gives us everything we need to be successful including special word problem study sessions.
Prof. Strothkamp is AWFUL! I have taken Chemistry before and done very well. He makes it impossible for students to pass his quizzes and tests. He is very intelligent and doesn't take into account that it is most of his student's first time taking a chemistry course. I would not recommend taking him!
His exams tend to stray outside of the review material and he is very blunt about student effort which tends to make him unlikable. However, he holds quite a few extra class meetings to review problems and does seem to care about his class. You can succeed, but that success may look like curved 60% scores and some frustration.
He does good problem sessions the day before quizzes and exam, and does a quiz review after everyone has taken the quiz and or exam which is super helpful. He will try and answer all questions asked, but generally there is no time to ask during lecture, so make a note and ask after class. He may sound stern but he really does care about you.
this class is the worst class ever taken, and he's the worst professor you would ever encounter. Please do yourself a favor and do not take this class, it will lead to nothing but stress for you. He grades us on material that he hasn't even taught, along with dumping 30 ALEKS topics a week, it is pure torture.
Ken wasn't terrible but he wasn't very good. He didn't really let us ask questions which was frustrating. Class was on Zoom and he never read the chat so if you had a question you had to unmute and interrupt him. Homework on ALEKS that didn't sync up w/ lecture and three big tests (2 midterm 1 final) + weekly 10pt quizzes. Not much grade padding.
Is Ken (as he insists on being called) a bad teacher? Not really. The way he explains things is clear and he is very accessible outside of class, though he tends to be very blunt. My problem was the tests though; they often look nothing like the practice problems and were very long for the time limit. I've had him 3 times and it's always a problem.
His teaching style is to talk over students and not alow questions. He will than complain if students come to him seeking help. Additionally he will spam your email with an obsered amount of random messages. Kenneth also refuses assist student in passing his own course. I wish I was making this up. DO NOT TAKE!
If you missed a class you are pretty much by yourself with the material of the class. If for any reason you can't take a quiz he won't help you take it on a different time.
Ken is not as bad as portrayed. However, this course must not be taken lightheartedly. There are weekly tests that consist of 3-6 questions depending on that week's material. The content of the quiz/tests is the PODs (Problem Of the Day) in that week. The ALEKS won't be in the quiz AT ALL. Plz make use of his office hours, rlly helpful.
Kenneth is really funny, in a dry sort of way. Although his course consists of tests, the homework being like a side note. The whole system is curved in such a way, that although I never really scored higher than a 50, I got a solid c. He is always willing to take the time to try to help, even though he can have high expectations.
He's very pretentious! Questions in class are discouraged - even if the smarter students/chemistry majors asked questions they would get shut down. He would say one of two things: "I already went over this" or "that's ahead of this class and we won't discuss it" He's very nice over email if you need extra help, just not in class.
I rarely have problems with professors but this one was so stressful. He made me feel very dumb, he was very blunt and very negative minded. His Aleks never matched with the work on quizzes. His tests were different from the reviews. I did great In chem 1 with a different teacher and I have a great lab score right now but his class is terrible.
You will be berated if you ask questions. I had a decent time because I understood the math on my own, but if I had a question I didnt ask it because he would only answer questions exasperated my after lecturing the entire class for not understanding things. I learned from his lectures, but not a great classroom environment.
Ken openly told us he wasn't there to teach us chemistry problem solving, just chemistry and that's what lab was for, but the lab teacher never did this. He criticized people for asking questions and even replied to a few by asking the students if they were in the right class. This is not an intro course you are expected to know Chemistry prior.
Having passive aggressive emails from Day one isn't fun in the slightest. Quizzes and tests are the main grades for this class, with homework barely contributing to your overall grade as well as no extra credit opportunities. His classes are all lectures as well that he doesn't let you ask questions in and will actually yell at you if you do.
His Aleks never matched or truley prepared you with the work on quizzes or exams. pick sheagly
terrible, quizzes and exams do not match, whatever you do not take this professor. I literally got an A in sheagley but now I cant past 50%
I had a 4.0 GPA in HS and really excelled in all my AP chem classes. Never in my life have I dealt with such an awful class as Strothkamps. Professor Strothkamp is passive aggressive in emails, doesn't allow questions to be asked in lectures and gives limited time to do quizzes. Please find another professor, not worth your money nor mental health.
This professor can't teach that well and his lectures are the bare minimum of what is needed to do good in the class. The lecture and Aleks aren't at all helpful towards doing quizzes and tests. The exams are unreasonably hard, especially because some of the things in the exams weren't taught to us or wasn't explained that well.
He assumes you know/understands the material like its that easy. The homework is through the ALEKS system yet even he admits that it will not help with tests/quizzes. He posts optional "problem of the day" questions that will help and is relevant to tests/quizzes, but I dont understand why he doesn't just assign those as the homework instead
This course was a rough experience. I don't believe I learned enough chemistry to justify the amount of pain I went through to get a decent grade in this class. ALEKs material was assigned; however, did not help prepare for quizzes and exams.
Use every resource available to you. Extremely difficult to get an A, as the wording on quizzes and tests can be tricky. In can be a tad rude and can be condescending but will easily schedule office hours if you ask. Don't panic if you are scoring poorly on quizzes or tests, because he curves the class fairly.
None of the ALEKS prepares you for the quizzes. Quizzes and POD's don't correlate most of the time. The one thing that helped was the worksheets. One good thing is that he curves grades enough to where you can pass even if you have a 60% by the end of the term. Get your iClicker points, score decent on quizzes/exams, and finish your ALEKS.
Ken would be much better if he changed his course in any positive way. The tests are difficult because you only have an hour for Chemistry problems that take 5-10 min each if you know EXACTLY what your doing. He also would send an email every week telling the class how bad they were doing. Also the ALEKS problems are useless.
makes chemistry harder than it should be. Take this class at PCC instead, trust me
Professor Strothkamp has positives & negatives. As noted, the Aleks does not go along with exams so it's just busy work. The PODs sometimes go along with the exams but not always. Things can appear on tests that were never discussed in class. What he does explain he explains thoroughly and makes clear his availability. Overall average.
I took CH 221 with a different professor and received a 99% in the class. I took CH 222 and CH 223 with Strothkamp because he was the only option and he is the worst professor I have ever had. He rambles on in lectures without really giving any understanding of the actual material. Tests are unrelated to material learned. Homework is useless.
Scored 87% in Chem 221 with a different professor. Struggled with Prof. Strothkamp for 222 (B) and 223 (likely C). He goes on 10-20 minute tangents on topics irrelevant to what will be on the test regularly. Multiple times other students have asked him questions in class or Zoom meetings and he has told us to "think about it harder".
He goes on random tangents about things that are barely related to the material all the time, and he doesn't prepare you for the quizzes or ALEKS. The lab TA had to teach us everything every week and this class isn't worth the struggle required to get a decent grade
I feel that the professor is not following the guidelines of the department in esrnest. Also I feel that the professor does bot even try to make an effort to understand the online learning platform that has been mandated by the department. He lives in his own idea of what the university should be like and disregards how it actually is.
An embarrassment to what remains of PSU's integrity. Be careful what questions you ask in class, actually he sees any question as test of your overall comprehension. He will start grilling you about meeting the pre-requisites, even the A+ students. He is very defensive. Seek outside tutoring and band together as a class. Be prepared.
Kenneth was a really bad professor. His lectures are all but useless and you are required to do worksheets outside of class that you don't even get credit for. Overall I have never experience a professor send out an email or announcement every week calling the class bad and a failure and not put any of the blame on himself. DO NOT TAKE. YW
hes fr the goat. I had so much going on in my life and if you choose contact him and try to figure out the best way to pass he will help you pass. The reviews saying he was bad is cap lol
This professor seems to really enjoy teaching, which almost makes it worse how much I struggled in his class. Not great at rephrasing concepts in ways that make sense to students, and he would get frustrated when we weren't understanding a concept. Was also being investigated by admin at the end of the term for misogyny and ADA malcompliance.
