He is a great professor-he has been very very helpful to several people in the class. And he is new! Other students should so take his class.
Good personality, is funny and is a fun teacher, but the class itself isn't very fun. He rarely uses visual aids, used 1 powerpoint all semester, and usually just talks while you take notes. Not much student interaction either BUT I learned a lot and I suppose thats what matters. Watch your attendance though! Miss one day and you're screwed.
I really enjoyed the class. It is mostly lecture, but the lectures are pretty boss. Tests were pretty accurate as far as relating to what we covered. Highly recommended.
Great teacher! There's not much interaction with him. However, his lectures are interesting enough. Attend class and finish your document assignments. Easy A!
Highly recommended---his lectures are outstanding, he is very approachable, and I learned a lot. Puts students at ease so they can speak and participate freely.
Wonderful, entertaining. I would def recommend him to any students esp those who do not like history!
He's ok. Not the best. He only uses 1 slideshow the whole semester and does not put it online. Also, he talks about the sad situations in his personal life a lot. The course documents were confusing, and the study guides are VERY vague. Try to take a better and more engaging professor if you can.
Lol-Dr. Ackerson does joke about his personal life-but that makes him seem like real. His class is really interesting to me anyway, and I am sure that he is one of the better teachers in History here at GGC. I would say take him!
I took Ackerson's 8:00 am history class. I never liked history, but he makes it pretty interesting. His study guides are very helpful, and his document assignments are pretty easy if you just read carefully! 4 tests, four document assignments! TAKE HIM!! You won't regret it!!
Great teacher, funny guy. I don't know how anyone could not like the class-very interesting and he brings history to life. I would recommend him for sure
He made this material much more interesting than I ever thought possible. He's funny, laid back, tests to the notes. Show up, and study the guide and notes, and you'll do well and learn a lot in the process. I would def take his classes in the future!
I really enjoyed this class. It was mostly lecture but he was able to draw us into the topics and keep us interested.
I really enjoyed Professor Ackerson's class. mostly lecture but there were powerpoints almost every day. I had to meet with him about my studying and he was helpful. I would recommend him for sure.
Dr. Ackerson is one of the best professors I have ever had. He turned one of my least favorite subjects into a new favorite. He turns the boring history into exciting and interesting stories and retells the stories in an easily understandable way. I loved him!
Great professor and has a good sense of humor. He likes to lecture mostly, not many visuals, but he keeps lecture interesting and the class involved. Essay counts for a lot on the exams and he doesn't grade them hard.
He kept class entertaining and understandable, did mostly lectures with a power point. If you pay attention and do your work you should be fine.
Wonderful teacher. Very helpful although not the best with study guides but gives the general idea. Documents are difficult to read but when analyzed correctly basically gives you an easy A.
Great class to take
Dr Ackerson's History of India was an absolute joy to take. He is an engaging and funny professor, as well as approachable and more than willing to help. His assignments were few and far between, and exams were not excessively difficult. I plan on taking another of his classes, even if it doesn't count towards my degree.
Proffesor Ackerson is absolutely one of the best. Its a lecture class off course because its history, the class can become boring but he lightens the mood with jokes which kept me from falling asleep. Test are not hard if you come to class and take notes.... I strongly recommend him!
Dr. Ackerson only has 4 Tests including the Final Exam which is not cumulative and only has Document Questions along the way. Other than that there are no other assignments. As long as you pay attention to lecture you'll do great on the tests, he covers everything in class.
I really enjoy his class. His personal stories--sometimes crazy!--help relate the material from the lectures. Dry sense of humor but keeps the class interesting. I always look forward to going to class, and I am NOT a history person.
Great professor!! His lectures are hilarious as he pokes fun at his own life. It is an oral lecture class, barely any powerpoints so take good notes. Easy class to follow far as content. Only had 4 test including final and 1 book report assignment. You can pass without book if you take good notes. Great personality and wit! Amazing would take again
Great professor-
Honestly one of the best professors I've had a GGC love that he isn't strict on attendance like a lot of the other professors. He barely takes attendance. As long as you come in and take the notes you'll pass easily. Great sense of humor amazing lectures makes learning 10 times better. Tests are easy if you have good notes.
I do not know why Professor Ackerson does not have a 5.0 rating. He is literally one of the best professor at GGC. He is passionate about teaching and is able to deliver the lecture while adding a couple of jokes at the same time. His tests are extremely easy, if you go to class and take good notes you should get an A.
Honestly, Dr. Ackerson is a great guy and hilarious. I just do not like his teaching style. Every single class, you come in and take notes the entire time. There are no quizzes, classwork, or homework assignments. You HAVE to do well on tests. He does take attendance, but only when a lot of people aren't there. If you like lecture classes, take him
He's a funny guy, but his lectures can sometimes be confusing on where he leaves off for the next test... Study guides are too broad when the tests are too specific.
Great teacher but boring class. Lecture and. Let's. Tests aren't really based on the study guide. Funny guy
I thought his study guides were actually helpful, and the tests come right from them. Know that stuff and you'll do well.
Took spring 16, If you miss class you are going to be hurting. His tests are from the lecture, and his study guides are extremely broad. The tests can be hard to study for if you don't take good notes. He rarely ever takes attendance. The class is only 4 tests, and a brief writing assignment.
He's super funny and keeps you interested even if you're not into history. He only lectures, so if you skip class you have to ket the notes from someone. Tests are multiple choice and essay and he gives study guides with key terms and possible essay topics. I would definitely take this class again.
Love this guy. Point blank. This is a lecture-based class, but the work is very minimal (literally, you only have two or three assignments and then three exams). Lecture-based obviously means he will lecture all class period, but he makes it bearable because he'll crack jokes all period long. Taking him for another two classes. Great professor.
He talks instead of posting notes. So as he speaks you write. He talks so fast and he's so monotone I forget what he just said. And study guide? All it is is a list, no definition to follow it. 4 tests including exam. Class is boring.
You need to read the textbook in order to do well on the test, and he won't tell you exactly what he will be putting on the test form the book. Study guides are pretty broad and you HAVE to take good notes! He is a great professor and although he gives long lectures, you learn a lot form them. However, he is hard to reach & takes long to reply.
Only assignments are 4 fairly easy exams and one essay, that consist of mult. choice, some matching, and a small 3-4 paragraph essay. The essay is from "Daily Life in China" book (240 Pgs). You write a 5 page essay on it. It is due near the end of the semester, so you have plenty of time. Class is just a lecture, but he's a very funny professor.
Teaches history in a way that's far more interesting than other history teachers I've had, almost makes it like an episode of Game of Thrones. Almost no homework, most of your grade is 4 tests. Attendance isn't graded, but tests are mostly on stuff from lectures. Attend class and take notes, and you should pass easily.
I agree with the Game of Thrones comparison--already this semester I thought that and I have zoned out listening to his way of telling stories. Very recommended.
Great overall professor, make sure you come to class for lectures, as tests are mainly from the lectures, 4 exams, 2 written assignments, study guides are given before each test. He makes the lectures worth it because they aren't your usual scrolling through slides kind of ordeal, he enjoys teaching history and he shows it. No cumulative final
I can't say enough about Professor Ackerson. His lectures are great and he has made me interested in history for really the first time. most points come from tests and the focus is on class notes, so don't skip.
You absolutely have to come to class to do well. Class is mostly lecture based, but he is a great lecturer and a great storyteller. Not too many outside grades, but they added up to a full test so that was cool. Definitely take him.
He is honestly the worse teacher EVER! literally took him for this summer and all he did was lecture lecture lecture and I understand that you do that in a History class but he would post Study guides up 2 days before the test or even a day, and it HAD NOTHING to do with the test. He wasn't fair and did not respond to emails much. DID NOT CARE.
I took this class over the summer since I had AP credit but a 3 was not enough to exempt, so instead of taking the GA hist test I took the class. My mistake. Yourr grade is basically ONLY exams. Made high 80s on all 3 tests and made like an 88-89 final grade. Syllabus said there would be other assignments. No other grades to help like stated.
I don't normally actually rate on here, just look. But the last two students were in my class in the summer and dude idk what they expected. Of course there was a lot of lecture, but there were powerpoints almost every day, all through class. study guides were given a few days before not 2. I absolutely recommend him--you won't be sorry!!!
Professor Ackerson was a great professor. He has a great sense of humor and is very understanding towards students. I don't think I would have passed if he hadn't been so interesting, even on topics that seemed boring. you definitely need to come to class though.
I sure loved this class and this professor. Easy going and humorous, but we learned a lot---or at least I did. He was very patient with some irritating kids in class too
4 tests including final, easy if you study. 2 EASY writing assignments; not like an actual paper its answering questions about short articles. Lectures without PowerPoints normally. Keep up when he lectures; he always tells stories about his life and its hilarious. Can be rude sometimes, but depends on how well you take jokes. Grades very lenient
This class wasn't that hard, but you still had to show up for class and study. He doesn't do powerpoints so you just have to listen and take notes. His study guides helps a lot and he gives you the writing topics for the exams but only two of them will be on the exam. He's very funny and his class is easy to follow. I definitely enjoyed his class!
He does use powerpoints every day, at least in the class I am in now. I really enjoy it and love coming to class every day. I would recommend him to anyone, and especially those who don't like history classes
Took him for a summer18 course and the class was great. Since the classes are 2.5 hours long in summer class can drag on but he made it doable and didn't want me to totally dread coming to class. He adds a lot of small funny details to what ever he is talking about. He didn't use PP so just know that, all notes come from his mouth. Tests are easy
Summer 2018 semester I had him. He used powerpoints almost every day but he doesn't do a lot of outlines or details like that. Lots of images and things to help us imagine what things were like and also show us many of the locations and famous people. Class went by very quickly which was cool.
It seems to me that maybe Professor Ackerson feels unappreciated, but he has been a great help to me and he is always available for people in my class. He is witty and thoughtful and doesn't preach to us about his own views-whatever they might be. I appreciate that.
Dr. Ackerson is totally cool teacher, he gives lectures that keep you tied into what you are learning and he is also funny so it makes the environment very nice. We only had 4 exams (1 being the final exam) and 2 writing assignments. Show up to class and you'll pass. Rarely went to class and still passed! Super Humble and Funny, highly recommend!
He has the best stories to go along with his lectures. His lectures are really easy to follow and his study guides are basically the exams. Take notes accordingly and you will make an A.
Never was interested in Indian history but I am now that I have taken this class. I really like Ackerson's style and I like how he is a real person not just a talking head. He will keep your interest if you pay attention and he has really helped some of the other students who have struggled in the class
A true gem in the GGC History department. His lectures are great and cover the test perfectly, and his tests are super easy if you have paid attention to the material. If at all possible take this mans classes.
I would highly recommend you take his intro to India class. Very straight forward and not confusing like other history professors.
He wasnt a bad teacher, but the class is lecture based. 4 tests including the final and two writing assignments. The tests are based off lecture notes as long as you write everything he says word for word in your notes, then you should be fine on the test.
Enjoyed his classes and took several. Humble, easy to get along with, no chip on his shoulder-quite the opposite-and no agenda like lots of other profs here. I really felt like he care about how we did. Courses are lecture-based, but they're interesting for sure.
I detect in Dr Ackerson a genuine caring for his students. I agree with what someone else said about not feeling appreciated. He's a great guy and is always tying what we talk about to recent events, he is super interesting and down to earth. Not much reading so far but lots of notes to take.
Took him for my Intro to India class and he was such a great professor, I took the part two. He is a history teacher, so heavy lectures are expected, but he seems like a "real" person versus just someone talking relentlessly. Very humorous and interesting. I plan to take him for my third semester (in a row)
Lecture after lecture and half the time with no PowerPoint to follow along with. Would get carried away talking about his life. Lectures were hard to follow and would write two or three words on the board. Two writing assignments are easy, but test are not, study guides are not much help, just list of words and short answer prompts were helpful.
This class was made difficult for no reason. He lectures without a power point most of the time, so you dont really know what notes to take. I ended up taking notes word for word and it still didnt help me study. The study guides dont match up to the test well. The study guide is not helpful at all just 65-70 terms. Hes nice and funny though
I mean it's a history class so it's going to be lecture. At least in my class, the test stuff all came from the study guides. Used powerpoint most of the time but not all. Overall he is excellent and interesting. Like any class if you let yourself you will learn. I'd recommend him for sure
If you would like an A or B for this course I do not suggest taking this professor. If you do not care to settle for a C or lower then pick him. Most ppl are rating him based off of his personality when his tests barely match the study guide. Most of the terms on the study guide will not be on the test. You end up studying them for no reason.
His classes are lecture classes but he is very interesting. The tests come from the study guides, and if you know the things on the guide you will do fine. There more items on the guide then on the tests, yes, but that is to be expected. A great course and a great professor!
Professor Ackerson was a decent professor. He did really good before the whole corona virus made us move online. Hes good a lecturing in class. Gives out study guides for test but the study guide is somewhat not like the test. Towards the end of the class it seemed like he gave up. Overall super nice and understanding.
History bores the crap out of me, but Dr. Ackerson found a way to make it more interesting. He seems really dry and emotionless, but he's actually quite funny. There is hardly any homework, though, mostly only unit exams, so if you do badly in the exams, there isn't much of a chance to get your grade up.
although he seems like a funny guy, all he did this semester was give us book work this semester. every single unit we had to read chapters and write papers about them for every assignment. i feel like i didn't learn as much as i truly wanted to
Dr. Ackerson was absolutely wonderful this semester. He made sure we were clear with the instructions and encouraged questions from the class although I took it online.
Took a hybrid class, one day of the week to go in. Due to covid the lectures were not continuous but they were interesting. Don't be afraid to be interactive in the class, he is a nice teacher and pretty funny.
Overall he is an understanding professor, i took his in person class. Exams are in person and his study guides were not clear. He doesn't use power points during his lecture so it's a bit hard to know what to write down.
He's a great professor. I'm not sure why some people say he doesn't use powerpoints. we had one almost everyday. Great sense of humor and a "real" person. Excellent and I'd take again
This class was okay. Took it completely online. Had 12 assignments, about1 per week. You only had to read a small portion of the text book or watch a video and then write a few paragraphs. I put medium effort into it and got a A. He dosent give feedback, so that was kind of frustrating.
His teaching was smooth and he was pretty energetic and funny. Mainly teaches through powerpoints but "forgot" to bring them near the end of the semester. It's hard to understand what is important as lectures feel like one long story rather than having main points to focus on. He had 6 things in the grade book which dropped my gpa.
I love Dr. Ackerson so much! He was so funny and super fun to listen to. This class is super lecture heavy and graded by only 6 assignments, but as long as you pay attention and put in the effort with the assignments, it's super easy. I've always hated history, but Dr. Ackerson made it interesting. He also encourages questions and discussion.
Absolutely hilarious and has a great heart. He definitely cares about people and his students succeeding.
This was an asynchronous online environment; therefore, I can not speak to Dr. Ackerson's personality or lectures. This one class was extremely easy, underwhelming, boring, and I felt like I would have much rather taken a different 25XX class for my major. Dr. Ackerson does not upload powerpoints for lectures, and does not make comments on grades.
I took the online class like the last student. Far from it being boring the class was fascinating and interesting. I got good feedback on my work and he was very helpful when I struggled. Would love to take Dr Ackerson in person and probably will. Other students in the class seemed to enjoy the class as well, at least the ones I talked to.
He is a very lenient grader, his clases are not boring and quizzes are not that bad at all...anyone who has taken good notes can easily get an A . Essay topics are given beforehand for the exams !
professor ackerson was amazing! he is the most lenient professor I've ever had. doing any assignment of his is a breeze (not many at all) he made whatever we are learning interesting. I would absolutely recommend professor ackerson!!!! the best!!
History has always been my worst subject but Dr. Ackerson made it enjoyable and easy to understand. Highly recommend him for those core history classes!
This professor is very funny he adds a little class to his lectures which make them very funny but you catch something every lecture. Would take this class again for sure
I did not love this class, but I did learn stuff. BEWARE, I took History of India and we had to watch 2 3hour long movies throughout the semester. If you like movies, then great, but it is hard to stay focused for me for that long. Dr. Ackerson is very knowledgable and will extend due dates. Both classes I took for him, assignment due Fridays @6pm
He was alright, doesn't post any slides so you have to show up to class. Tests aren't hard as long as you take good notes. You have to write a short essay for each test but get to choose from from 2 prompts he gives and lets you know what they'll be. Doesn't assign many assignments so do all of them because they count for a lot of your grade.
Best professor that I've had and he makes his class easy and interesting, the class is very easy as long as you take good notes and pay attention. There is only 4 test and he does give out a study guide and as long as you review the study guide you will pass.
Took him for summer course HIST 1112, super easy. Legit assigned about 9 assignments, all of them being short-medium length assignments of using a textbook to answer questions or using a crash course YT vid to answer some questions. Super easy and can tell he is a nice caring professor. If you need a light history credit for summer, he is your guy.
He was really nice and very informative. He was detailed in what he expected and very clear on all the assignments. We only had about 10 assignments. They were all either from the textbook, a recorded lecture, or a YouTube video. He was great. I would definitely take his class again. (I did this class through dual enrollment.)
Sweet man
A wonderful professor. Sweet man. His class is easy and simple yet I still learned. I would take him again in a heart beat.
hes so sweet, great person. attendance isnt taken every class but i suggest going every lecture because youll have to take notes. i like going to his class because i leave feeling like i learned something.
Few homework assignments, takes attendance every now and then, and offers extra credit if asked. Funny professor with entertaining lectures. Only problem I had was that he had no recorded lectures, or never posted his presentation slides.
