Amazing lecture quality, clear explanations, best prof!!
Prof. Yip is fabulous! He explains everything really well and stresses the important topics, making sure everyone understands. He's very approachable and happy to answer any questions. If you take BIO130230, take his section! The two hours in the evening are definitely worth it (the third hour is optional).
best professor the CSB department has
Super great prof!
Amazing professor!
THANK YOU FOR BEING A MUCH BETTER LECTURER THAN NEUMANN AND MITCHELL. After I failed the midterm (going to Neumann's lectures), I was desperate for help. You made concepts so easy to understand with clear and detailed explanations. Thank you for saving my BIO130 mark.
Professor Yip is amazing. Had him in both first and second year (BIO130+BIO230) and I look forward to taking more of his classes. Very knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches and is always there to answer questions. Tries his best to make the lectures and concepts as clear as possible. Fabulous professor! :D
Thank you for repeating while we're taking notes. And for wearing those tight tight t-shirts. Man, I hope this is anonymous.
There is soooooo much reading in this class. That said, it's not really necessary to do all of it, but if you persevere and read every single thing, you'll still get a good grade. I didn't read for the 2nd half of the course and still got an A. Also, he's a great prof. He knows the material & teaches really well. Looking forward to BIO230 with Yip.
Prof Yip is by far my favourite professor at U of T. He is detailed in lecture and even brings timbits for those long night classes. He is bae.
HE IS THE BEST! HE MADE THE COURSE SUPER INTERESTING! HE IS AN EYE CANDY TOO! 3
He is the most amazing prof. He provided all the needed details for each and every single slide, took the time to answer everyone's questions, repeated concepts when necessary to provide emphasis on its importance, and made the lectures self-standing when it comes to exams and tests. Didn't do readings, went to his lectures, and got an A-!
Amazing
Excellent prof! i fell in love with biology after taking his class! Never taken biology before no even high school, but im thinking to go in biology major now haha
a very good prof. makes lectures fun to attend, gives clear explanations, and he always stresses the points that will show up on the tests/exams.
Great prof! we need more of him. lectures are essential!!
Clearly.
Amazing Prof!
Honestly one of the best professors in UofT. He teaches at a great pace and in great detail. His tutorial sessions are pretty cool, though I barely go there due to my chemistry lecture being scheduled right after. But he's a cool guy and he's from Scarborough and as fellow resident, I d have a slight bias/preference for him over other profs. 100/10
Prof. Yip was an amazing lecturer; he was clear, repeated important points and extremely approachable. It's not too hard to do well in this course if you attend (or catch up on) lectures and take good notes - it helps to understand content rather than memorize it, which Yip also emphasizes. PS: You CAN skip the readings
Awesome professor who is down-to-earth and approachable. I would definitely recommend to take whatever class he is teaching because he manages to make it interesting, funny, and straight-forward.
This guy is my favorite prof in u of t. The one and only course I looked forward in attending classes for. Patient, considerate, interesting lecturer. He also keeps on reviewing lecture concepts so you'd get the next concept better. I absolutely love this guy.
Prof. Yip is amazing. He makes the most boring subject very interesting.
His lectures are A-MAZING. You NEED to take notes in his class, makes life so much easier. Don't bother with the textbook, it's just extra info that you won't even be tested on. Attend lectures, make your own notes. And then it's all up to you.
The best prof I had during first year. Talks super clearly and gives amazing lectures. Tells you what parts are important to know and goes over slides at least 3 times to ensure you have all the necessary notes.
Best Bio Prof
Hands down the best instructor I've ever had. Professional, concise, repeats information on slides to reinforce material (very helpful), emphasizes points/ concepts which are exceptionally difficult, welcomes questions. Very knowledgeable in the subject area. Overall phenomenal professor - other profs at UofT should learn from his teaching style.
Best Prof I could ever ask for! Yip is super nice and approachable. He repeats important information over and over again and his lectures are very clear and organized. Plus, he has a great sense of humour, which makes lectures more interesting and entertaining. I hate night classes but I did it just for him
If Yip were a restaurant, he'd be on the top of the Michelin guidebook.
Amazing lecturer - even via online modules. He repeats important information over and over and is clear and concise with the lecture material. As a fourth-year non-science student with enough breadth requirement credits, I'm even waitlisted for CSB202 which is also taught by Prof Yip because he was simply amazing!
Best Prof ever
Amazing professor. The only professor I can listen to for 2+ hours in one session without blanking out. He emphasizes the difficult material and adds in additional information that is USEFUL.
Amazing prof! Those taking BIO130/BIO230, his night lectures are worth going to!! He is very clear and manages to engage the entire class. Sometimes, he brings timbits to class :) He is super nice and answers all questions properly. GO TO HIS LECTURES !!!!
Best proff everrrrr!!
Great Prof, makes long Bio lectures interesting and clearly explains concepts.
Prof. Yip saved me in BIO230. I would have not gotten the grade (86%) without his clear and informative lectures. Hands down best professor I've ever had at UofT so far.
I can guarantee Your test marks will be raised if you attend his lectures instead of the other lecturers in this course
He was an amazing lecturer who delivered the content very well.
He delivers concepts very clearly. He repeats important points twice and explains it very slowly in order to ingrain the concepts in people's mind. Therefore, it is easy to understand all the concepts when you attend his lectures.
He made going to class very enjoyable. Did not have to suffer through 6-8 bio. He was funny and would keep you awake. Though if you do not attend lectures (or watch them online) you would have a hard time because there's a lot that was not on the posted power points. Test are very hard for this course but I thoroughly enjoyed him as a prof.
Super clear when explaining content. Will repeat important to concepts multiple times, and tells you when he's going over a topic that will be on the tests/exam so you can make sure to study it. Very detailed. Pretty funny too.
Lives up to the hype; remains enthusiastic and concise in delivering the material 2.5 hours into the lecture. 3
Yip is probably the best prof I've had to date. He explains everything CLEARLY and more than once during lecture; it's nearly impossible to miss something he says. Makes it very clear what material will be tested and what won't. Don't really need the textbook but really good for clearing up concepts. Detailed lecture notes + diagrams are vital.
Amazing lectures that make you actually want to listen. Doesn't have a boring voice like other profs.
Yip is absolutely the best bio prof that I will ever have the pleasure of being a student for. He cares about his students and explains lecture materials very well
His lectures are very straightforward, clear, and organized. I loved how he repeated things multiple times with in a lecture; it helped clarify & understand concepts. I personally found the material a bit challenging but he was great at making things clear. I regret not dropping by office hours to ask questions; it probably would have helped.
Best prof during undergrad at UofT! Exams are difficult but he makes everything clear and easy to understand.
great guy but all this guy does is talk
His class is really boring. I guess Dr. Yip knows his stuff but his just simply doesn't know how to teach. His exams are difficult so watch out but if you were smart you would drop out or take it with some other guy
Some say his a great prof. but I guess that would be perspective. His tests are the hardest I've seen in U of T, I'm not going to lie they dropped my average big time
Honestly, this guy makes his test difficult just to mess with his students. If it wasn't for Kenneth I would be getting a 4.0 gpa
He's a great lecturer and adds some fun facts in between. His tests are pretty easy compared to other courses and he reuses a lot of questions from past tests. He's clear on what he's going to test on and the tests are only based on lectures.
Dr Yip earned my respect by showing up to lecture two weeks in a row while sick and coughing his lungs out because he didn't trust subs to deliver the material at his normal standard. His explanations are very clear and he gives interesting preambles. His tests aren't as hard as people make it out to be.
Amazing prof! His explanations are very clear and hes hilarious. He also showed up 2 weeks of lecture eventhough he was very sick- he literally coughed so much #respect. Im not a big fan of the course as i find it too detailed and micro, but i love professor Yips lectures, theyre the absolute best
Love him so much, such a pity that hes not teaching any 300lv biology course:(
Amazing professor! Don't really like the course, but Yip is one of the best profs I've had at UofT
Great prof with very thorough lecture material and explainations
Classes are a bit too quick to follow, but he gave us extra time to take notes and was able for all the questions.
"No no no no no no you need to listen to exactly what I say because your textbook does a poor job explaining it" this prof constantly makes you copy exactly what he says in lecture and goes very quick. He tests you on the littlest details and is very challenging to keep up with. Seems like a nice guy but a tough prof.
Such a funny but really good prof. Explains important things twice to make sure you really understand everything, but posts fill in lectures (so go to class)
Easy tests.
Amazing prof!!!
The course materials are very well-explained. He is an amazing Professor.
You can really tell he cares about teaching the material, he is very meticulous in what he teaches. He always gives the opportunity for students to ask questions, and gives off the impression that he actually likes teaching this course. Really stand up person, perfect prof for first year students experiencing uni for the first time.
He posts fill-in lectures, so go to class, but you won't even mind going! He explains things so well, and goes over the material slowly and repeats everything at least twice. Tests are more than fair, he won't throw any curveballs, and he provides lots of previous tests to go over and also goes through hard questions in class. Amazing prof!
Before I took his class, I thought I can be done with copying and memorizing exactly what a teacher says after high school. Absolutely no critical thinking and analyzation skill are required for this course. Honestly, I don't think we actually learned anything except memorization techniques.
Professor Yip is probably one of the best professors at the University of Toronto, he is extremely clear during his lectures and goes through material more than once in one lecture so that you have a solid grasp on the content. His tests are fair, and most of it is based off of his lecture slides.
even in a con hall class, he still pauses to let us write notes and his preambles are super interesting. it's easy to focus with his voice, kinda annoying to hear him drink his water tho lmao. his tests are fair, but if you don't memorize that one tiny detail you wouldn't get the answer.
I had Prof. Yip in first year for BIO130 and honestly, the best professor I've ever had so far. Lectures were fantastic and eliminated the need to read the textbook (in my opinion). Super understanding dude (would tell us every class that we might not know something rn, and that's fine). Very fair midterm and exam. Legend.
Amazing lectures. Bio is never easy to get marks, but he made it interesting and easy to memorise. Still, memorisation is inevitable. You have to work for the mark.
Really a good prof
Amazing professor. He is the hero of Life Sci. His lectures are amazing, he really breaks down details clearly and is very easy to follow. Understand his lectures, remember all the details and you will do amazing in this course. His lectures are very well organized and the info is structured very neatly so its ez to learn. (dat epmotion video LOL)
honestly such an amazing prof who really looks out for his students. His lectures are extremely informative and he repeats all information that he views as being most important. He also includes humour and informative videos within his lessons to keep students intrigued. Overall the term test and exam were very fair compared to other courses.
Amazing lectures, he's really clear about what you need to know and what you don't. As long as you memorise everything from the slides you should do well on the exams. Really helpful even outside the lectures. So far the best prof I've met at UofT!
Great lectures with very organized and concise lecture material. He makes sure to explain each concept thoroughly before moving on, the midterm and final was written very fair too. He is extremely friendly and approachable - honestly the best prof I've had during first year life sci, and I hope to take more of his classes!
lectures are very detailed and he explains the content well
Prof Yip is amazing. He explains concepts very clearly and his tests are challenging yet straightforward. He guides you in your learning and wants his students to actually learn. Probably the best prof I've had.
He is very thorough when explaining concepts. Would definitely recommend taking this course. Keep up with the material, give yourself enough time to study, go over lecture recordings if needed and you'll enjoy it as much as I had.
He knows how to teach
Best prof I've had at UofT so far. Bio has a lot of information to know and he breaks it down so well that all you have to do is review at home as opposed to relearn everything on your own. If you're reading this Kenneth, we love you!
Very organized!!
THE best professor I've ever had in UofT. His tests weren't hard if you have studied thoroughly and understood everything he said, which isn't really hard to do. His lectures are very clear and he explains concepts very well. He gives students time to write down and the lecture pace is just right. Also asks for feedback on these as well! great prof
The best professor at UofT I have ever had. Impossible to fail if you actually paid attention in lecture. I swear I am straight but...
Such great lectures that I'll never forget... Explaining everything nice and clear.
I am so thankful to have taken this course with Dr Yip! He breaks down intimidating concepts really well with the perfect pace and is very clear on what we should know for the course. He even makes the effort to reassure students during his lectures by occasionally mentioning he wasn't a superstar throughout his student life.
I mean... if all other UofT science professors are seeing this, why can't you be like this guy? There's a reason his class average is high and students actually respect him. Him and Dr. Dhillon are the two greatest teachers at UofT... concise speakers, charismatic and to the point! They lack the grey area most other profs love sitting in.
I mean... "charismatic" is the best word for him...
I found Neumann's lecture style confusing so I went to Yip's class. Wasn't for a second disappointed.
heavy leacture, but explained clearly. However, tests are hard and detailed based on what been taught in lec and textbook
Best prof ever.
He gives clear intros to the things to be discussed in lecture and recaps previous day's material. The way he teaches makes all the elements so clear. Repeats the material enough that it is committed to your short term memory! Clearly highlights the important topics. Good sense of humor too.
best bio lecturer, very clear instructions and done a really good job emphasizing the important parts! would definitely take his classes again!
Great instructor! Presents the material very clearly and is very good at repeating the important things.
Such a great prof! He explains concepts really well and makes them actually easy to understand, and helps you learn how to draw from multiple lectures. Very reassuring and makes sure that you understand everything. And he's so cute
Yip is one of the best profs I've ever had. His lectures are thorough and he makes sure you write notes on topics that are important. Whenever he says something about the topic that is important, he will repeat it back to you slowly again. Also heavily emphasizes important points and concepts in lecture.
So glad to have Prof. Yip back for BIO230, awesome lectures as usual.
Possibly the best prof I have had so far, very organized in his lectures. He actually gives you time to write the notes down and repeats important points. Be sure to do the textbook readings (there are a lot of them) but the test is pretty fair. He made me interested in molecular biology. I'm always focused in his lectures.
Love the semester taking BIO130 with Prof. Yip. He is absolutely the best professor I've ever had. Clear lectures, notes and funny jokes. I always love biology, but he makes me love it more!
Professor Yip is an excellent teacher. His slides and explanations are really clear. He shows to the students what parts of the lecture are the most important, which is nice for first-year students. His lectures are very inspirational for anyone interested in molecular/cellular biology.
Prof Yip is easily one of the best lecturers at U of T. Makes it very clear what he's looking for, and has many HILARIOUS mannerisms. Writes fair tests too! Sometimes students think he repeats things too much, but definitely not, definitely not. Now just to review, Prof Yip is easily one of the best lecturers at U of T. Makes it very clear...
very nice prof! love!!
Professor Yip will repeat things bare times but he is really blessing you. He explains so well and really wants his students to understand the material. Go to lecture and take notes (especially on what he repeats)! Super helpful when studying for the final!
Professor Yip explained the lectures concisely and clearly. His classes really helped to understand the key points of knowledge.
Lectures are super clear; he does an overview of complicated slides and adjusts his pace to make sure everyone understands the material. He also provides sample exam questions which are very helpful. Quality jokes are sprinkled here and there. The last lecture was really amazing and made me want to take 2nd yr bio! GREAT professor overall!!
Very clear in lectures. Really cares about students, answers questions. Definitely looking forward to his classes next year. If Yip has million numbers of fans, I am one of them. If Yip has 10 fans, I am one of them. If Yip has 1 fan it is me. If Yip has no fans, I am no longer in this earth. If world against the Yip, I am against the world
Explains exactly what you need to know and exactly what to copy down. However, tests are challenging and the way he words his multiple choice can be tricky. Very enthusiastic and excited!
great prof
Yip is the best!
Would not have passed without this prof. His lectures are super informative and he explains everything so clearly! The tests aren't easy but they're what you'd expect given that it's a bio course :/ You can tell he's super passionate and he actually seems like he cares about the students
The best lecturer and professor you'll ever have
MY FAVORITE PROF EVER!!!!!
Masterpiece
One of the best profs at UofT, highly recommend!
this man is the g.o.a.t
I was in both BIO130 and BIO230 in his section. He is very clear in his lectures and his test questions are purely based on what he has said in this class. If you just remember all the important parts he repeats in the class, you will definitely get a good mark. He is also very caring to his students. Definitely an amazing professor!
Probably the best professor I've had at UofT. His lectures are super clear and he's great at explaining things. He also gives students time to copy down the notes and also repeats important points multiple times. He's also got a sense of humour which made me enjoy this class more. I'm so glad I was able to have him for both BIO130 and BIO230
Kenneth Yip is one of the few professors that make me like this school. He obviously loves what he does, and he wants his students to be successful in his course. He goes above and beyond in explaining course material, and he absolutely shines in office hours. A king all around.
Love Yip! He is such an amazing lecturer and you can tell he cares about his students. You definitely need to study to do well in his class, but it's worth sitting through a 6-9 lecture since he's so good. I'll miss taking classes with him :(
He explains every concept thoroughly
He is one of the clearest profs I have had. If you pay attention in lecture you will do fine on the tests. The questions were always fair and related to important points in the lecture. He is hillarious
Taking the night lecture just to have him as a prof was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. Def gonna take whatever section he teaches for BIO230 next year
Repeat things 100 times until you are so tired of it and then you can do the test eyes closed, then you will remember certain phrases he say (epithelial cells line surfaces, cavities, and organs) for the rest of uni life probably
if you take notes in class, it will definitely show up on the midterm! he is really caring and repeats things and makes sure you understand the content! night lectures was worth it!!
I love Yip. Best prof in Uoft I've ever met. Light of LS.
Fantastic course with Prof. Yip. The lectures were very informative and he includes extra information that isn't on the slides originally that he shares beforehand so definitely attend class to do well. He is also really clear about what will be on exams versus what won't, which is definitely something to take advantage of. Funny lectures, too. :)
If you go to class and write down exactly what he tells you to write (he literally says "write that down write that down!!" or "don't write that down!!") and study that well (dw 'bout readings), A+ is very attainable. You have to put in the work, though. Going to lecture is actually very enjoyable because he is very funny.
His lectures are just very clear and constructed, but for BIO230, it does contain a ton of information that you need to remember for tests. Personally prefer lecture heavy courses, and very approachable for after-class questions so 100% would take future courses with prof yep if possible.
Loved going to his lectures. Honestly a great prof who makes understanding content that much easier. Would love to have him again.
Recommend 100%. Professor Yip was amazing and his lectures were very clear, he would repeat multiple times to make sure you understand the material very well.
Such an amazing prof, very clear and succinct when explaining confusing biological mechanisms. Addresses common confusions student have and gives brief review for important concepts taught in the previous lecture to help refresh it. Best prof I've had for biology
Incredibly funny and an excellent teacher. One of the best profs I had.
His lectures are phenomenal. You'll do great if you go to lectures, he will repeat important stuffs multiple times, and his explanations are never boring. Best prof, also those biceps...
I believe he's the best prof in UofT.
He teaches so well, I really feel like I understand more difficult concepts when he explains it. He is always super well prepared, and kind. Very passionate about what he talks about and helps us as much as he can.
THE. BEST. PROFESSOR. AT. UOFT. AND THAT'S ON PERIODTTT
This man is a living legend. His lectures are always so clear, well-paced and easy to digest compared to others. It's clear that he knows what works for students and puts it into practice. Possibly the only course this semester that I actually enjoy listening to lectures in.
Probably one of the best professors at U of T, his lectures are concise and easy understand. He'll also tell you multiple times if something is important and will show up on the test, so even if you zone out for a second, you'll still probably catch it. Tests are pretty straightforward and is exactly what he teaches. 10/10 would take again.
THE MIDTERM AND EXAM are both sooo hard this year during the pandemic (Zoom University). But why are we not complaining? Well, because Dr. Yip is just the best. His teaching style is absolutely perfect. So, it's really on us. Dr. Yip is perfect and that's on periodtttt
He's the kind of prof who says "this WILL BE on the exam" and "this WON'T BE on the exam" what more do u want
Dr. Yip is hands down one of the best lecturers at UofT. Unfortunately the BIO230 is a class that will most likely bring down your grade. I can assure you I put in my best efforts for this class, but the midterm/ exam questions are very confusing. Very dissatisfied with my mark considering the amount of work that I put in.
Prof Yip should have his own TED talk show. He is a phenomenal lecturer (he makes BIO230 very easy to understand). You really just need to have the motivation to keep everything in your head (which I didn't try to do). The grading scheme is very fair. Don't waste your time reading the textbook if it's an A your aiming for.
Yip is an amazing lecturer - he's lighthearted, takes time to explain concepts from a student perspective, does periodic reviews after difficult parts, and he always makes sure the students know he cares/they have resources. Plus he does a great job getting you excited about the material and brings everything back to real life.
Explains so clearly!!! No matter how hard the content is, he breaks it down perfectly. His voice is oddly soothing as well lmao
Amazing lecturer, explains everything precisely and clearly.
He explains everything so clearly in lectures. He even goes over points of confusion in lecture that you wouldn't even have realized. He connects points between lectures, and tells you exactly what relationships you should know for the exam.
This guy is the best lecturer ever. He has such good energy and literally carries you through the class. He makes detailed explanation
He is always full of enthusiasm and his lectures are all engaging and clear. I'm not a big fan of Biology but he made this course more than just tolerable to me.
Like all his other reviews, he is simply just amazing. His lectures are short, concise and to the point. If you can choose him, definitely choose him.
Not sure if I missed something because of the online format, but I found his style kind of rushed and often unclear. Engaging voice & lectures are short and sweet, but pointless if you have to keep pausing to clarify... Sometimes felt like someone else made his slides and he was just reading through them, not always knowing which info to emphasize.
Prof Yip is great. He organizes his lectures very well in a way where you don't have to really do it yourself. However, he does talk a little bit quick and you may find yourself rewinding quite a lot. He cares and it shows even in the online platform. For the most part, he is exceptionally clear and understandable, emphasizing important details.
Great lectures and engaging voice!
Makes hard to understand concepts clear and concise!
An amazing professor that I thought was one of the best lecturers I have had in a long time. He can explain all of the concepts concisely and clearly with a nice emphasis on what we should know for sure to be ready for the examinations. Also, super caring and funny. Overall, a great prof and a great course.
Amazing lectures, very digestible content although sometimes a little pausing and rewinding is necessary. Midterm and final were very fair in concepts tested, with questions pulled straight from the lecture slides. Labs were a little boring online but got more dense throughout the course. Attendance is optional, most content in videos and readings.
He was one of the best professors I ever had. He explains concepts thoroughly and is easy to understand. He clearly cares about student success and leaves lots of time in between tests, assignments and labs. Although the concepts are sometimes hard, he makes fair tests and has plenty of opportunities to get good marks.
love this guy... petition to get him his nobel prize!! it is so rare to find a professor nowadays that is as good at teaching as he is, too many are clearly well-versed in their area of expertise but suck at teaching. but not yip! he explains things so well, honestly even better than the book. always super helpful during office hours too. :)
Just like BIO130, Prof Yip nailed it once again. Hes amongst the very best professors and teachers Ive ever had. He is incredible at explaining concepts and resolving confusion. BIO230 was a much more interesting course ( personal opinion not because of teaching staff ) and Prof Yip made my term amazing. This is a 100% take course.
It made my first year unique. He explains things so well and is easy to understand. He is accommodating during office hours and makes you comfortable asking questions.
amazing professor and passionate about the course
Awesome professor! Would definitely look into taking other courses he's teaching!!
This course was online with the main lecutres being recorded, the tutorial portion was based on your section. I would attend Yip's tutorials because he is just amazing at teaching. He explains concepts clearly and I felt I learned more in his section than the one I orignally enrolled for. Doing a bio minor hopefully I see more of him!
Dr. Yip is one of the best lecturers at UofT! His lectures are very clear and interesting.
Absolute Legend I took csb201 and 202. I recommend his course to everyone looking to take an elective. He offers clear lectures and answers all queries. One of the best Profs I've had at UofT. For a person who hates bio, I have to give him credit for keeping me engaged. Mids/problem sets are easy. Had to write a paper for 201.
Absolute treasure. Brilliant lad.
This prof has an amazing voice. It's an enjoyment listening in on his lectures. He speaks at a relatively slow pace but content covered is more than plenty.
AMAZING, absolutely fantastic prof that was funny and charasmatic and taught si well
He is one of the best professors at UofT. His teaching methods work very well for everyone I know, he makes sure to emphasize what you will be specifically tested on, and he is just a hilarious person overall. Will be taking one of his courses again.
Amazing professor with extremely engaging lectures. Teaches concepts well and is very clever and funny.
professor yip deserves to get published in nature
Got a 72 on midterm on 4 days of studying. Kenneth yip designs fair midterms (they definitely are not easy, but very fair). He explains things in a clear way and makes a relatively confusing course more intuitive. My tips are focus on the bigger picture of every lecture, and you wont get confused by all the processes.
Great professor
Amazing professor
Only professor to get a full round of applause after every lecture. Every word this man speaks is golden. Gives obvious hints about what to expect on the exam.
Heavy lectures with a lot of material to memorize but professor Yip does a good job explaining the very in depth concepts. Unlike the majority of the profs at UofT he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. But keep in mind that it is a difficult course and his tests ask for the smallest details rather than the big picture.
Top G
Prof Yip is all the way amazing.
the best prof
Really the best professor I've ever met. Taking his course this year make me regret not taking his BIO130
Best prof at UofT by far!
the best prof ever
indeed a very good lecturer
Prof Yip is a very good lecturer and really cares about the students' understanding of the material! The tests are not easy, but they are very fair and as long as you study consistently you can do well. He explains things at a very easy-to-follow pace and will repeat the important details! He's very kind, helpful, and motivating.
I liked professor Yip, he taught well and was able to make the lectures fun and interesting, though I did find them fairly difficult. I found the pacing to be a bit rough for me, the parts that were slower paced I felt could be faster and the parts that were faster paced I felt could be slower. Overall though, the class was a good experience.
The GOAT of UofT
"he is a prof, not the prof we deserved but the prof we needed"
Good professor, easy to follow, explained concepts in detail.
This man deserves it all. He is singlehandedly holding up my cGPA. Take a lecture with him and you'll know what I mean.
Hands down the BEST prof at uoft. He emphasizes exactly what u need to pay attention to for the test & clarifies concepts really well. He's a funny guy and compassionate as well; passionate about the topic. There is a textbook but u really dont need to read it as his lecs clarify all u need.
Such an amazing prof. His 3 hour lectures are usually 2 hours lecture then 1 hour of tutorial (which is optional to stay for). He's kind, caring, funny, and really emphasizes the important parts of what you need to know on tests. I know so many people not in his class show up to his lectures instead of their own because of how amazing he is.
Honestly the best prof you could end up for. Lecturers switched halfway through the term and mostly everybody switched to his 3hr lecture at night. Funny guy, emphasizes what is important and repeats key items several times for you to write down. Absolute legend in my book.
He is so kind and humorous and Bio130 became my favourite lecture due to him. Although as a international student I think he speaks a little fast, but he always repeat the critical knowledge point to let students write notes.
Phenomenal.
Absolute Godsend
professor yip is everything. he is so caring about his work and really wants us to learn. he makes sure we all understand what's going on and genuinely wants us to succeed. so grateful to have been in his lecture
THIS DUDES INCREDIBLE HE'S SO FUNNY BUT ALSO SO KNOWLEDGEABLE I ONLY GOT A BAD GRADE BECAUSE I LEARN EVERYTHING THE NIGHT BEFORE
Similar to what everyone else here says, he is a fantastic lecturer, keeps the class super entertained, and really makes sure everyone understands the testable content! If you are taking BIO130 definitely join Dr. Yip's lecture section if you can!
HE'S AMAZING!! If you have the option to take him for BIO130 or any other class, please do! He explains content well and he's funny.
Dr. Yip is an amazing lecturer and person! He makes a tough subject like molecular cell biology (BIO 130) so easy and interesting to learn. Not only does he teach the course material very well but ensures to bring in the real-life applications of several topics through entertaining talks he calls his "preambles". Thank you for the exam hints! :)
Perfect.
Just had Yip for BIO230 summer school to get ahead for next year: def one of the best lower-year bio profs I've had! He so clearly knows his stuff but is really good about knowing his audience, BIO230 has a lot of tedious content but he was really good about slow walkthroughs and had clear expectations for students to follow!
Solid.
I have had Dr. Yip for two classes now and both have been amazing! He is one of the best lecturers I have had so far and gives very helpful tips for midterm/final studying. You get the sense that he genuinely wants each student to succeed. If you're planning on taking introductory biology, sign up for Dr. Yip's class!
Kenneth Yip explains the slides in great detail, slows down when he is going over an important topic, tells you exactly what he will assess you on, and adds useful preambles to make comprehensive connections outside class. Overall, he is a really solid professor to have! However, he usually has late classes during the school year.
The best professor I've ever had. Explains everything slowly and carefully assuming almost no background knowledge while still being super interesting and engaging. He could teach a course on rocks and it would still be fun. Every professor should try to be more like him.
he so smart and funny and kinda cute he just made me love studying biology i always want to be around him
I love you Kenny
literally. the. best. prof. he knows exactly what he's teaching and how to to teach it, makes an effort to tell you which details you don't need to bother with and which to focus on. makes an effort to help his students understand, explains everything extremely well. I have never enjoyed bio so much in my life I WISH EVERY PROF WAS LIKE HIM
I have almost three years of university (two different ones) up my sleeve and Yip comes to top three best professors I've ever had. It was a shame when the professors switched half way through the course. Very engaging, explains concepts very well, goes over them to ensure you grasped it.. He made bio230 easy. Come back :(
All has been said.
Professor Yip is the best prof I have ever had at UofT. He is amazing and I don't have any constructive criticism to offer at all. Keep teaching the way you've been teaching, everyone loves your lectures! I wish Prof. Yip could teach all of my courses, my marks would be so much higher.
10/10 prof
Best prof at UofT
Prof. Yip is the best professor i've had at UofT by far. His lectures are easy to follow, and he even slows down when explaining important details to make sure you have time to write down what he's talking about. He really seems to care about his students and genuinely wants them to succeed.
Oh my god this prof is just the best like i made an entire instagram story to enshrine him on my profile god bless you professor yip ure the best assalamualaikummm warahmatullahiwabarakatuhhhhhhhhhhhhh
BEST PROF EVERRRRR I LOVE YOU PROF YIPPPP
He cured my ebola
The best professor ever
Had for both 130 and 230, was amazing both times. You don't need the textbook. It's worth the awkward 6-9 lecture time.
Fantastic lecturer, ensures that he's emphasizing the important content, had him for the first half of BIO230; every lecture, every student would clap, he was that good.
Clear lectures, clear grading criteria, fair exams. Funny, great person, gives u time to take notes, well organised slides. The embodiment of everything good you'd want in a professor. Best dude ever.
Very clear -- tells you exactly what you need to know and what isn't worth memorizing (and even dropped a few hints about things that ended up on the final). Takes the time to clearly repeat what we need to write down and does a big review after each complicated concept to make sure you've got it all down. Super funny and engaging!
Prof Yip taught the first half of BIO230. He was very enthusiastic of the material and his lectures were very engaging. The preambles that he did at the beginning of every lecture were very entertaining and educational. Although the content was sometimes a bit dull (repetitive of BIO130), he made the course worth it.
Yip's got everything you want in your professor. His lectures are always engaging, informative, and well paced. Some professors will go so fast that you can't write notes, and still go overtime. Yip give pauses for you to write your notes and emphasizes the important concepts. All this and he still finishes with enough time to answer questions.
Prof. Yip is amongst the best professors I've ever had. He adds humour, teaches at a beautiful pace (based on feedback!), and explains things wonderfully. He also helps his students find research positions; and tends to be quite humble, lol. He's amazing. Take him if you can.
best teacher ever
Great prof who cares
Great prof! The overall course is quite challenging, especially in the first year but his lectures are easy to follow, and the exams do not feel like they are trying to trick you. He goes over what concepts are most important to understand for upcoming exams and will repeat content-heavy slides, giving people time to take good notes.
great prof and great course! made the material really digestible and clear.
Tells you what you need to know, slides are useful, and plenty of practice tests
it is so obvious that yip really cares about his students. whether you are going into research or just want to do well in his course, he was so approachable and always gave you the time of day. If you're in first year doing BIO130, GO TO HIS LECTURES. they prepare for the tests so well, and adds relevance with examples of the material in real life.
Goated, even when he's sick and dizzy and on the verge of fainting he cares enough to teach and still does a great job
The actual goat
Possibly the best UofT teaching stream professor
Took professor Yip's BIO130 class in the summer and it was super fun. He makes sure to clarify confusing concepts multiple times and will often repeat/explain something if even one person doesn't understand it. He is also very intentional about his students learning. Bonus points for having the funniest videos to explain concepts!!!!
10/10 one of the best profs
Professor Yip is a gem among lifesci faculty at UofT. The structure of BIO130 made a 4.0 attainable just by labs; one poor exam result can balance out the other. Yip's tests are straightforward, to the point, and representative of what he discusses in class. I don't know if he's the absolute #1 prof at UofT, but his heart is def in the right place.
He is actually the best prof you can ask for. He never fails to make the whole lecture hall chuckle with his funny jokes out of no where. He is super caring and he points what we need to know for future years as well as for the midterms and exams. He is really the GOAT! Take his classes even if they are at night, you will not regret it!
Engaging lectures, informative and well-paced. Professor Yip is amongst the best - he adds humor, explains concepts clearly, and helps students find research opportunities. Helpful resources like unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook make this class worth taking.
AMAZING PROF I LOVE HIM
Amazing professor, a clear cut above the rest. Great pacing, reviews important/difficult details simply, is very articulate and uses easy vocab, and is good at getting everyone's attention.
As an upper year molecular biology student now, I have heard about the Lac operon an average of once a month for the last four years. And let me just say. I would give anything. Anything. To hear Yip explain it to me again for the first time. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to con hall and hear this man say "The Lac Operon" once more
Amazing prof… he's one of the rare professors that genuinely care for your success.
So far so good! He deserves to be published in Nature!!!!!!! !
HE IS SO GOOD!! GOATTTT
had him for bio130 and now for bio230. easily a great prof. pace is just right and makes hard content easy
Mans knows how to teach
I literally love this prof so much that's all I can say really idk where to start he is mind changing love his lectures super clear love his preambles super inspirational and makes things fun and clear and just an awesome experience amen
He's the best professor I've ever seen. Hope he will teach 3rd and 4th year class.
The lectures are very clear, he made biology easier and more fun.
GOAT of Uof T
THE GOAT 🗣️🗣️🗣️
I took BIO230 in 2022 and Prof.Yip is still THE BEST prof I have EVER had. Everything about his lectures is perfect. He inspired me to major in CSB, that's how much I love him. Can make any concept easy to understand AND fun.
Honestly, one of the best prof in UofT. He is the type of prof that actually cares about teaching and sharing what he knows to his students, while keeping the lectures enthusiastic. And the way he teaches is ON POINT. 10/10
Makes sure the keypoints are known, very clear flow of teaching, knows what he's talking about, doesn't get confused by his own material, it shows that he has prepped and knows what he's going to teach
Professor Yip's lectures never fail to make me wiggle my toes and tickle myself silly
Nothing is confusing with his explanations, and he's very sure of what he says. As long as u watch/ attend lectures and study appropriately 90+ is very attainable. You could still get unlucky with a harsh lab TA, but most are good. One of the best profs at UofT for sure! Content is also more interesting than BIO130 if u didn't love that course
Took this course for Breadth but Prof. Yip was good, his coprof. was not. The homework is boring and the course is memorization based but that's to be expected it's a biology course. Don't take if you don't like memorizing and like cramming the exam on the last day.
Lectures feel like a movie. He explains everything so clear and does a summary for every slide. He is so thorough with his explanations. He has very funny preambles that surprisingly help me remember concepts. He's the only prof I've had so far who's compiled a whole list of research opportunities cause he knows we're all eager pre-meds. The best.
Dr. Yip is my role model. I have nothing more to say.
Prof yip is by far my fav prof at u of t, he's really good at lecturing and making the mind numbing info a bit more digestible He's also hilarious, he pulls out the bio rizz jokes out when he explains helicases and protein dentauring (yes the dumb ones but its hilarious) He's really down to earth and makes this course soo much better
Great Prof, but BIO230 has a lot of material to understand + memorize I should have dedicate more time on studying Prof Yip explains very well and he's very motivating
Bro is very chill.
Single-handedly carried my grades after I had to cram the first 6 weeks in a week for my midterm and ended up getting a 90. Excellent pace-wise in lectures and even adds summarised notes to make understanding concepts easier. An actual GOAT.
Well course content brutal but Yip is funny. Make me at least understand the content
Not much to be said. TAKE HIS CLASS!!! YIP IS THE GOAT!!
The teaching methods were fine, but I don't see the hype. The pacing of lectures was a little weird, but overall comprehhensive.
wish he taught every course at uoft. he's the best
Rarely do I ever rate a prof, but yip is one of the few profs who actually feels like they understand what students go through and their struggles, if I could continue BIO with him I would 100%
Prof Yip is awesome. Everything you need to know is explained in an easily digestible way and perfectly sets you up to do well on your exams. Always responded wholeheartedly and without condescension to student questions. Just a great guy in general.
Yip is an amazing and relatable professor. He can make silly jokes, use analogies to introduce a concept and understands the stress that students go through. Though the lectures were dense in the summer, Yip explained concepts well and I rarely felt confused. He also doesn't put any trick questions on midterms or exams - everything is lectures.
Absolutely goated prof. He teaches amazingly and makes the lectures fun. He taught the concepts very clearly. Took BIO130 in winter 2025 and I would recommend everyone to pick yip's section (6-9) over any other prof
This prof was giving the best lectures İ have ever seen in UofT. Even people who were in the other section of the same class were attending his lectures and every single time classroom was packed. He gives the information clearly.
The best professor I've ever had. I always leave lectures understanding almost everything. He explains concepts so clearly and at a good pace. He makes jokes and uses hilarious analogies to further explain concepts. He also always does quick summaries of concepts to make it even clearer. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!
Literally the best professor at UofT. Makes the lectures engaging and explains the concepts extremely well. If you're gonna take BIO130 (or 230), make sure it's with him (just go to his lectures even if you're not enrolled in his section).
Get this guy published in Nature
I would like to say he is perfect! The best professor I've ever met!
Professor Yip is extremely knowledgeable in his field. He breaks down complex material into small, clear parts and is truly dedicated to ensuring students understand the content easily and quickly. I'm very grateful for his lectures — they helped me grasp the material easily, quickly, and with little to no confusion.
He makes biology super easy to understand, and teaches his class in a way that demonstrates he cares about the success of his students.
He litterally explain those complex stuff in a very easy understanding manner, just please don't hesitate to take his class. He is the life saviour of my biology study and he reignite my passion for biology.
Genuinely the best prof at UofT, try and get as many classes with him as possible
Professor Yip is truly the best professor I have ever had in my entire academic journey including two bachelor's degrees and a master's because the way he teaches is phenomenal, he genuinely cares about his work, and God bless him.”
yip is the GOAT!
Yip is truly one of those professors who you just know cares a lot about students. He teaches in a way that he knows will help his students succeed in his class. Biology isn't my forte but I've started to appreciate it more with him as my professor. Wish I could take more classes with him...
Rated him a 5/5 for BIO130. Rating him a 5/5 for BIO230. If you're reading this prof yip, just know I'd take a bullet for you fam. Absolutely goated professor.
Da goat. Nuff Said
the goat. always take his classes if you have the option to.
always bet on professor yip
The best prof I have had so far. He can make the most difficult concepts digestible and even interesting. He wants his students to do well. Take his section and even if you're not enrolled, still go to his lectures. Tests are a bit challenging but nothing uncalled for. Fantastic prof, really wish he taught upper year bio courses.
I think he genuinely might be the best prof on god's green earth I love him beyond words
one of the best prof I've ever seen, explains everything so clearly. Although lecture contents are quite heavy.
Incredible lectures. Incredible speaker. Clear slides and phenomenal pace. He is the best professor ive taken so far and the hundreds of other students that have taken him can attest.
Genuinely the best professor at UofT. If every professor was like Dr. Yip my life would be wonderful. Even though the courses he teaches have a lot of complex context, he does his best in explaining them very carefully, and makes it entertaining at that!
This year he gave everyone A+s literally everyone I know got an A+. As a second year in life sciences, I feel it was him and professor Matthew Robbin's who taught perfectly and PASSIONATELY their courses. Happy extra credit and mark for everyone ! Class average seems Aish this year.
Bruh I got 45 on the midterm followed by 80ish on labs. I wasn't also confident on the final exam and still managed an 87. I think he curved everyone up by 10% minimum. Class average is extremely high this year.
Might be THE BEST professor in this university. He, Barb Morra, and Kylie Luska are the only reasons I still believe in this university. Yip explains everything very slowly, and it is understandable, making sure you get everything clear. His exams are not built to trick you, and even though the material is dense, it is a very manageable class
