Great teacher. IF I passed his class then any one could!
I wasn't really impressed with Mencher. I think he tried a little too hard to be cool with the students and should have just been himself.
This guy is great to take and you will remember most of the stuff this guy teaches. He uses good aids and is an easy teacher to talk to if you ever don't understand the topic.
Wonderfiu lteacher..cool
A fab liberal arts course taught by a fab teacher. Besides art, you learn a bit about literature, history, music, etc. I agree w/ another reviewer though - seems like he tries a bit hard to be cool w/ students. Pity. He doesn't need to do that.
his class is really hard, but as long as you are there and turn stuff in, you can pass it. i think he's pretty dorky, so he's not trying hard at all, that's just the way he is. i like it and think it's an effective way to teach. mencher gets two thumbs up
Menscher is a great teacher but really expects a lot from his students. (maybe too much) The only problem is that he gives a ton of work but if you get it in he's a pretty easy grader. He does a lot of reviews. If your a serious student and want to lea

He is the art class u should take. Its worth it and u will learn stuff without knowing. There is a lot of reading and the book is like 100 but its a cool class with no drawing!!!
Very easy class. Just show up, half pay attention, and turn in all your worksheets. I don't think I'll ever appreciate art as much as I should, but after taking his class I sure know alot more about it.

A really enjoyable class. You talk, you discuss, and you look at art. There are NO tests. Your grade is mostly based on 8 assignments. He is a stickler on attendance though so be there on time.
I liked Kenney's personality and crass humor, and he is very knowledgeable about the subject and an excellent artist himself. But, I struggled with the traditional class format of heavy weighing on attendance, too many quizzes especially pop quizzes, and homework assignments. I also found his syllabus difficult to follow - a lot of dates were incor
very easy, take it with him
Professor Mencher is HARD! He is very strict and also very picky, so be careful. On his quizzes, homework, test, etc, everything counts. Grammar, spelling, and everything else counts. So if you're planning to take him for art, you better be ready to work. Oh and his so called funny personality, he's not really funny!
Dont take this guy, he sucks at teaching. Out of 67 students only 9 passed the class.
Kenny's an awesome teacher, and even though I had to be in class at 8AM, I never regretted going (unlike other classes I considered "ok" to cut). I loved the art we covered- this is seriously one of the best classes you'll ever take at Ohlone. Don't listen to the kids who say it's hard- we didn't even have any tests!
VERY firm on his rule, yet if u follow him and really devote in drawing, u'll learn a lot!
MY MOST FAVORITE CLASS AT OHLONE! Kenny Mencher loves teaching and loves art and he made an early morining class worth going to because it was informative and it was NEVER boring! He is a gifted teacher with an amazing sense of humor. Don't miss class or assignments or be late and you will do fine. I am going to study more art because of his class.

I was actually excited about taking this class before I walked into Mr. Mencher's class. Honestly, he knows what he's talking about, but I was completely apalled by his uprofessionalism and rudeness to his students. I made the decision to drop this class rather than be assaulted daily by his cynicism and insults. I won't ever be in his class again.

When I first entered the class, I thought, because of my low interest in Art, that Mr. Mencher's class would be boring. On the first day he talked about the amount of hard work and tests and exams and I was under the impression it was going to be very hard. I soon learned that none of it was true, and Mr. Mencher was the best teacher I EVER HAD!!!!
Easiest Class ever!! He may be emotional at times, but none of it matters. I used to hate Art, now I love it!! Go Kenney MENCHER!!! (p.s. Really Good Painter)
work on the worksheets and study guides as soon as you can and print them out. they are all you need to know. what he shares is INCREDIBLY interesting, but the midterms are DIFFICULT! participation counts unfortunately, so quiet, artsy, shy types like me beware! he locks the door as soon as class starts so you cannot be late. attendance is very man
I took Mencher for an online art history class in 2004 and I am one of those (I have to get an A) students. He failed me on one of my worksheets for plagurism. When I called to clarify he said the abided by the Ohlone code of plagurism and I used three words in the same order the book had. Two of the words were "and" and "the".
very strict teacher, a lot of rules , he gives you a 10 page syllabus and 9 of the pages are about his rules. the moment I walked into his classroom i felt unwelcome due to him blabbering about his rules. luckily I dropped the class the day after.
He is the best teacher EVER! I was never interested in art-in fact I hated it! But this man made me so interested that I'm seriously thinking of changing my major to art. He is SO easy! Just do your work, as with any teacher. He has rules-but thats for your own good! And the poor man feels guilty about enforcing him. Clear, and interesting teaching.
I THiNK THAT MR. MENCHER iS A WONDEFUL TEACHER. HE ACTUALLY WANTS US TO BE PREPARED FOR OUR BENEFiT. I REALLY RECCOMEND HiM iF YOU ARE iNTERESTED iN ART BECAUSE NO OTHER ART TEACHER CAN PREPARE YOU BETTER FOR THiS MAJOR THAN HiM.
Mr. Mencher is probably the best art teacher I've had to date. A lot of people complain that his class is too hard or that he is too strict, but he has rules for a reason and I've noticed that the people who think that his class is too hard are the people who don't try at all. His art 101 class was actually fun, it made me like are even more.
Awesome teacher! At first I thought I'm getting a C but i got an A instead. You may think his instructions on the first day is confusing but it gets better along the way. Just do everything ask for such as worksheets and readings (on time). You also have to speak up in class with is a plus for your grade. The exams aren't that bad either, everything
He goes pretty fast through his materials, and he does expect a lot from his students but i personally think that is a good thing.
He is a very good and comical teacher. However i feel lost in his class most of the time. Everything he talks about is religious. I didn't grow up around a bible and never went to church, so half the time i have no idea what and who he is talking about.
Great Teacher.
Kenney Mencher is a really good teacher and really helps you with all of your work and making you a better student. He is however, a Meter Maid about his rules. Late to class? tough he locks the door. Broke your foot? should of walked faster to the door. other that his attendance policy being strange and useless, He is a pretty good.
Professor Mencher can come across as really strict but everything he does & the way he teaches is truly to your benefit. I've never stayed so interested and learned so much from one class. Thank you.
He jokes around and pokes fun with his students, but he never crosses the line. You always know exactly what is expected of you in his class. He makes the material interesting because he gives fun lectures. I had zero interest in art before taking his class, but I am taking 103B with him next term because I love his class. Amazing teacher.
Mencher is a great instructor. He really knows all about art history. EXTREMELY strict. Does not help you at all, if u fail, u fail.
Mencher is full of himself, and those rules of him, rules and more rules. Mencher tries to be cool, meanwhile hes just a dork, like many of the profs. Insisting that you buy his art book is stupid, no real reason to buy it, except make him extra money. I'd rate him a "D". And whats with the religion questions?
I thought he was pretty good. To the person who didn't like the book, did you bother to read it? Maybe if you did you wouldn't be so pissed. He said that he gave the royaly checks back to lower the cost. Yeah, he's kind of a dork. But corny/funny too.
You think you're watching a stand-up comedian until exam time comes. Then Kenney is all business and yeah, he doesn't care weather you pass or fail. If you show a genuine interest and don't BS him you'll do alright. Very important: Take notes directly on the printed out work sheet of paintings. He lectures right from it. Talks very fast. Pay attn!
He creates a very cohesive picture of art history, using religion and culture, politics and the like. Very interesting to go to class. He can see through kids who are trying to weasel through his class -- don't try to take advantage of him. He's clear, and honest. Sit up in the front and participate -- use his handouts. You'll do well.
Mencher is hard work. Don't try to fool him, he knows best. Take notes since day one. If you like Art and history you will learn a LOT! Participate! Do the readings! Sit in front row, he'll remember you! No late work! Show him that you care for his material! Very fun and very entertaining!
No words can describe Kenney Mencher, ugh
Very energetic teacher. Definitely know his subject well. Take notes in his class and go to field trips. Take my word, you will learn a lot and astonish your art-ignorant friends.
Pay attention in lecture. Everything you need to know he covers more than once and is on the study guide. You learn a lot that you'll use in other classes too.
Don't bother with the textbook. It's $200 and you can get an A without ever opening it. After the first 3 weeks he doesn't take attendance, but exams are based mostly off lectures so notes help. Pretty entertaining and knows his stuff.
To be able to get a good grade in the class you really have to come and take notes on almost everything he says. Tests are based off of study guides he gives you online and lecture so PRINT THE STUDY GUIDE! Even though he's not the easiest teacher, he's entertaining and you learn a lot from him. I'd take him again
Worst teacher ever. He doesn't care about students or teaching. He Only cares about rules and humiliating people. I used to feel relaxed while drawing and painting until I took this class. You should only take this class if you are good at playing the game "Simon Says", because you have to do EXACTLY what he says or else...
Yeah it's pretty crazy that you have to show up on time and have your supplies.
Great man, gives plenty of resources to help us get the grade we deserve.
Mencher is delightful, entertaining, and knowledgeable about the subject. I really enjoyed his class even though I had no interest in art history previously. Show up for class, print out the study guide, and take notes. The class can be challenging but he is fair. Overall, it was worth the effort and he is a great teacher.
Funny and entertaining, pretty easygoing, don't be late to his class (if you are an adult and don't know that by now, shame on you!). Ask questions! He will answer them! I learned a LOT in this class. It IS hard, but study, take notes - listen! and you'll do well.
His class is Actually easy as long as your are willing to put in the work!if your paying $100 over for a textbook use it!He is one of the few teachers that are willing to help you learn and understand the material in his class. Use the resources he gives you! I'm considering taking his other course because the readings come up in other courses.
asking student to buy his own book but useless. A super picky person.
Seriously he is an awesome teacher! He is not an easy teacher, he makes you work hard to get a good grade. I would say if you put the work in you will get a good grade. But go to class, show up on time, pay attention and participate. You will learn so much . He's truly amazing ! I love his witty sense of humor :) it's all in fun .
Peace, Where do I begin? I am really pleased with how this class is going. Professor Mencher is so kind, entertaining, and very helpful. He has study guides on blackboard that will really help you on his tests (which have been mostly essay-based). Know that you have to work for your grade, though. If you work hard, God Willing you will succeed.
Worst Art Professor ever. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Everything he lectures are based on assumptions "I think..." "I feel..." Stupidest class ever. I am an art history major and this class makes me want to scrape my eyes and pull out of ears and hair. Super long lectures based on nothing. I walked out feeling confused than leaving with knowledge.
Although a little conceited, he does a good job explaining the history. He uses examples, draws pictures, and keeps repeating keywords that we need to remember. I really liked how he made us write essays each test, and gave us the opportunity to take the quizzes as many times as we wanted. One of the clearest classes ever.
Very helpful, super sweet, and clearly knows his work. He really loves the students that put in effort to learn. Any help can be received from him during his office hours! I honestly came away with new perspective for material in the art world. Lectures are rich and fresh (no monotonic speeches) Not the easiest, but undeniably one of the best!
Mencher is one of best instructors I ever had. He is excited about teaching and cares for all his students. Will stop at nothing to help a student. Wonderful Experience and would recommend it to anyone.
Students would ask questions. If Kenney doesn't know he says come after class. You come after class and comes up with excuses that he forgot or he's busy. He has a habit of being unreliable.
Watch all the videos and some little readings, attend class if not an online course, and excel. Ask questions what the professor meant by iconography, formal, and contextual analysis. Here is where most of the students fail; not asking what should be specifically written. I thought this class was easy since I have an A. Study hard
Kenney is the type of professor that lives off what he teaches, in the literal sense. His veins flow with fresco and his idea's are as enthusiastic as the master artists he teaches you about. This coming from a student he used as an example of how not to be late, but thats a personal issue. Survive the first few weeks and you'll enjoy his teaching.
Wonderful teacher and very inspirational. I was in his Art 103 B class last semester and the man went through so much personal stuff that would make a person have a nervous breakdown. He went through it though and was able to finish the semester on a great note. It was one of the most amazing things I've seen in my life. Mencher's awesome!!
Charismatic, straightforward, unconventional, kind, knowledgeable. All the things I needed to kickstart my journey as a painter. Expect optional trips to museums and galleries all over the bay. Kenney really catered to each students individual needs by offering personal and honest constructive criticism. Thanks Kenney, you're the bomb.
His online class consisted of 3 Quizzes and 3 tests. He gives a time frame in which you can retake the quiz until you score a better grade. Be ready to view all his video lectures and take notes, because you will need them for the tests which are timed essays. It's not a difficult class it actually grows on you, however, stay on top of the videos.
Prof. Mencher is great teacher, he is smart and organized. He loves teaching and art and it shows when he's talking in class. I learned a lot from him. If he still offers the field trip to the Stanford Museum, make sure to go because it does help one appreciate art more.
I emailed the professor several times and no response but he can send out mass emails on how important it is to him for us all to succeed.
Mencher is not as bad of a teacher as what some people have said. His art course is very straight forward and does not include any curve balls. If you try in his class and make an effort, he will do the same back but you have to be willing to do the work too. He cares about your grade!
I took painting with Kenney last year and he truly helped me grow as an artist. If you think outside of the box and put in effort, he'll do everything he can to help further your skills so you get where you need to be. He pretty much ignored the lazy students. His stories are hilarious and he's very loving to his participating students. I miss him!
Def Would not take again, he has 10% of your grade in participating in his Facebook group where you basically have to be the first person to answer or else you're boned, sucks for people who work in addition to going to class. Online quizzes and tests were easy, didn't watch his lectures at all for the last two chapters and still got A's on them.
Kenney Mencher is extremely rude in his interaction with students. I have never felt so disrespected and belittled by an instructor, his way of voicing concern is troubling and I seriously think he needs to reconsider his method of instruction. I absolutely would not ever recommend taking his class.
Show up, do the work, participate. Students need to take more responsibility for themselves in anything they do with their life. He's a smart and great human being. Information is clearly presented.
Currently taking Professor Mencher's art 103 class online. He's been an amazing teacher; he really does care about his students and he wants you to succeed. He even posts videos students can watch from home covering all the material which I greatly appreciate. I wish more teachers had the dedication he does, I enjoy his class. Thanks for all you do
Watch the videos and you will pass. Not a great online teacher. Does not respond to students very timely if at all, unless on Facebook. If you ask about test or grade he will respond negatively so beware. Big ego and expect you to love art history. He forgets some people just have to take the class and don't love it.
If you are a student who wants to do the bare minimum and get an A, then not only will you struggle with this class, but you will struggle with the rest of your college career. Simply put, you get out of this class what you put into it. Go to lectures, participate, & ask questions. Mencher has his peculiarities but then again, so do the rest of us.
Professor Mencher is a very fair teacher. He is passionate about the subject and really wants students to succeed. Make sure you look at all videos, take notes and key is to participate on Facebook. It is a very challenging class but if you do the work, you will get a good grade! It's a fun class and you learn a lot!
He is a really helpful professor. Actually the professor that inspired me the most. His test won't be hard and he will tell you what's on it beforehand. He will let you answer questions on Facebook for participation but they are easy questions. One of my favorite teacher in Ohlone. Highly recommended no matter u r taking it for credit or fun.
A quirky professor with interesting lectures. Emphasized class participation via facebook but he later dropped that requirement due to lack of comments. All the material is available online and is fairly easy to understand. Hard to fail his class and I would definitely recommend it to others.
I love his teaching. His instruction is very clear and helpful. I learn a lot from his class. Besides, it is so relaxing to draw in his class. Highly recommend.
