very nice but lectures put class to sleep
smart, funny, and interesting, class was easy for non science major, recomended!
He makes you sleepy and I thought the labs were just weird. But I hate science. I don't think he was so fair in grading.
Had to go to the field museum on your own for a paper. Wasnt too bad. He's hard to understand, but if you take notes and study those you'll be fine. Don't even need the book.
Very interesting/engaging teaching, very helpful.
he's oftentimes hard to understand; he needs to improve his diction; and his grading is totally unfair!! he might have a PhD, but his pedagogical skills are poor
I couldn't understand what he was saying bc of his accent. He also was extremely unhelpful during class & tests. I asked a question bc the wording of his test wasn't in proper English form, he wouldn't help me because he thought I was trying 2 get answers
I love this guy! He's so into his teaching that it actually makes you enjoy the class as well. I think he's great, i'd definatly take a class taught by him again. Such a nice guy!
He's funny in such an adorable way!His diction takes some getting used to.he explains his notes well, and if you study them, you'll be ok.tests were all multiple choice.surprisingly, his lectures are engaging enough to the point where i never fell asleep.
i agree with the last comment. very very easy class as long as you study lecture notes.
Very nice teacher, great sense of humor. He should get an award for teaching..lol. He stutters a lot and is very amusing. ha! makes the students feel like they're the most important thing in his life
Dr. Shimada takes enthusiasm to the MAX! I can honestly say he was never a bore. His tests are challenging, but he ocassionally curves them (don't rely on that though). Very knowledgeable and interesting. I would take him again.
If you can decrypt his accent and get past his fascination with the plural form of every science term there is, he is an ok prof. His lectures don't strictly pertain to the tests, and reading the text is a must.
his tests weren't bad. He went over and over the same material. He refers to sex alot. He was just OK
He has 3 test of 600 points all together. Test are hard. He keeps the class awake. Doesnt curve unless class average was really bad compared to another class. Overall, not bad I would take him if I was you. Just go to every class and listen to him lecture
Kenshu is very enthusiastic about his work- but that's what he spent his time talking about- his own research. Very nice person, but awkward in front of the classroom. Tests are a disaster because they aren't clear.
will this guy ever improve his diction? he stutters ALL the time; his lectures are not always clear; the tests are a bit hard (your lecture notes WON'T help you a lot). overall, i don't like him even though i'm doing pretty well in his class.

Love him....great teacher..tests really aren't that bad, but take extra notes besides the ones he puts on the overhead. He's so random, and funny, and his class is actually a lot of fun. I would recommend him to anyone. No book needed in the class.
Ken is amazing! I loved bio 102 becuase of him. He is fun and makes it interesting I wish I had the chance to take him again. He is fair and so are his tests. Best bio teacher I've ever had! Very happy man so it rubs off on you. Take him!
His attitude is very optimistic during class but his lectures and notes are so boring!!! The exams have nothing to do with the notes he presents so u have to pay close attention to his accent which at times is difficult to understand. If u want an easy A, don't even bother!!!
He wasn't kidding about having to work hard for your A. Remember that he doesn't offer ANY extra credit. Doesn't check attendance either, but in this case, it's to your advantage to show up since all exams revolve around class notes and no textbook.
Hes like a teacher out of some teenage movie. Seriously, he seems to laugh over his words at times. Smart guy, Paleontologist by profession, knows everything about geology. Hard to get an A. I managed to get a B-, would have been a C if he haden't curved tests. Funny, even when he doesn't try to be.
He is very enthusiastic about his work. You have to work to get an A but he is very fair, helpful and he cares about his students. A lot of memorizing and class is boring sometimes.
He was a great teacher. I am not a science person and I managed to get a B and I did not study that much. He wants you to do well and is willing to help you. Take him if you can. He was wonderful.
This guy was great. When I had him, he actually got hit by a car and still made it to teach. To top it off, all you have to do is read what he says to. Piece of cake.
gives you all the notes for the test, explains a lot and has enthusiasm to spare!
took it as a requirement, and this professor was always talking with students. Gave exact expectations for the course and the notes for what was on the exam. no reading, just attend the lecture. very accessible outside class and helpful and understanding. one of the most enthusiastic and accomodating profs out there.
One of the best professors at DePaul. You will learn a lot, be challenged, but you will not struggle. He also is very open to helping outside of class, and is extremely fair and honest.
He's such a lovable dork/nerd, but nevertheless, still one of the best professors here. You'll learn to get over his slight accent, nerdy stuttering, and his very enthusiatic love for his career. Make sure you go everyday & take very good notes. Also, follow every rule for the paper/poster board & memorize all the notes for the test. Take him!
It's sad to say that there are not that many good teachers at DePaul but if you are lucky enough to get Shimada stay in his class. He uses packets that are fill in the blank so it's very easy to follow along. He's kinda funny, for a teacher and loves science in a good way.Test are a little tricky but I got a B so don't get stuck with a bad teacher.

Loves what he teaches and is very enthusiastic about it, although he requires you to memorize ALOT for the tests. So, if your anything like me (not good at test-taking), DO NOT take him, I guarantee you it will be the most difficult introduction class you have EVER taken.
howdy, howdy, howdy! he'll make you work for your A but it'll definitely make you a better student.
he's halarious and he doesn't know he's funny. He goes out of his way to help his students. An ape could pass this class. Take him! You'll have the best time. Going to the zoo and the field museum was so much fun.
KENSHU!! I took him for my Explore Chicago class. It was the easiest class ever. We went on interesting field trips. The hardest assignment was writing a paper about a leaf. Make sure you study for the quizzes and tests. But he's so funny and nice. I would recommend.
He's a nice guy, but as a teacher, he's not organized, has difficulty articulating simple ideas, and tends to get off subject. He's also slow-paced. His tests are based ONLY on lecture, so the book is ENTIRELY useless. Tests aren't too difficult, but he likes to be tricky with words. I don't recommend him. I was always VERY bored in class.
very nice professor, no textbook but offered many examples in the in class notes. we got to go to the beach for class! how many times do u get to do that in college? tests are easy if u study homework was little to none, but labs were difficult sometimes . only 2 lab write ups. very good guy . he is funny in class. always excited to come to class
very good professor, no textbook, got to go the beach for class , little homework. tests are easy if u study , always excitied to come to class
Not a fair grader, not interesting in lecture, and annoying with the yelling everytime he enters the room. A nice man and obviously interested in his discipline; just made me even less interested than when course began.
this teacher is really weird, but i like him. His class is super easy, do not need a book, tests are based solely on class notes so attendance is very important, but not necessarily mandatory. Likes to show videos in class, which are really interesting. Long story short,if you want an easy A, this is the teacher for you.
Don't listen to any of these comments! Ken is the nicest guy ever.. his tests are pretty easy and if you ever have a question, just ask him. He is really friendly and grades fairly. so he is pretty much the ish.
I don' think Dr. Shimada is easy, but he's not impossible. He doesn't use the textbook so his tests are based off his notes. He is very enthusiastic about his class and research. He isn't an easy A but if you study and go to class then it shouldn't be too difficult. I would definitely recommend him!
This professor is awful! He treated us like we were children, couldn't keep focused on one topic to actually teach it, and seemed more interested in sharing about his own research than teaching the course. Would not recommend to anyone, stay away!
Incomprehensible teacher. His classes are a bore and he gets off track almost every period. Hardly covered the material intended. Book is useless on his tests and his wording, often incorrect and tricky. In my major and I will never take him again.
Dr. Shimada is quirky but in a really good way. How many lectures have you snored through b/c of a boring professor? Dr. Shimada doesn't let that happen, and I actually learned. Tests are based heavily on notes, which he CLEARLY states at the beginning of the quarter.. it's really a matter of having consistent attendance and not being lazy.
Dr. Shimada is a good professor and is always upbeat and comes to class everyday with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. While you can't get an A by being lazy, you can definitely get an A if you attend all the lectures, take notes, and study your notes for the tests. If you didn't do well in this class, don't blame Dr. Shimada--he clearly state
Dr. Shimada really enjoys teaching the topics at hand. He is very straight forward in what he expects from students. It is not impossible to receive an A in the class if you attend and TRY. His tests are based off the notes. He is FAR from incomprehensible and is very clear in his expectations. He is my favorite biology teacher thus far at depau
Where to begin. This guy should be teaching third grade, not at the college level. His lectures were spastic and his teaching was severely hampered by constant interruptions and obtuse movie clips. Plus, enough with praising your own work! I would stay away if you actually want to learn anything.
Dr.Shimada was a great teacher! It was a pleasure learning about a topic that Dr.Shimada knew so much about. His movies enhanced the material covered in class. If you are willing to work, like any other class, you will succeed in his class.
Very passionate and helpful professor. Lectures are clear and concise. Willing to spend extra time with students whose interest in the material is beyond the class. Integrates video to help explain complex concepts. Must attend class! Tests require an understanding of the material, not just regurgitating facts. Did not deviate from syllabus.
I'm not quite sure how others can give Shimada high marks. He deviated from the syllabus constantly (infact, not covering chunks of it), often distracted himself from the material and was totally incomprehensible at times. The films, while interesting, did not adequately address the material that he chose not to teach. Awful teacher.
I am not sure about the previous user's comment. I compared my lecture notes to the topics listed in the syllabus and they match exactly. He may have fallen behind, but everything was covered. That may be difficult for someone who was not showing up to class, but that's another problem all together. Great Prof, just make it to his lectures.
Dr. Shimada has been one of the best professors I have ever had. This was the first bio class I have taken and he was extremely easy to follow. His notes were to the point and I really liked that the tests followed the notes rather than the book. I also really enjoyed his classes. He was funny and was overall a fantastic teacher.
All around good professor
Prof. Shimada is enthusiastic about biology. His energy and humor keep class interesting. His lectures cover the most important points from our ultra-dense text. The only way you'll have trouble is if you do not attend or do not pay attention during lecture. Take notes, study them, and you'll do well. His "Good Morning!" shouts are NOT annoying.
Dr. Shimada was an excellent professor. He lecture was fun and interesting. He shows a lot of videos which are usually pretty cool. His tests can be difficult, but as long as you pay attention in lecture you can usually do pretty well on the tests. Take copious notes, attend lecture, and use the textbook only for clarification. Great Class!
If you are not a science person I would stay away from this class. I took it as my learning domain with lab and did not do so good. If you are bad at memorizing then this is not the class for you. Tests are very and very tricky as well.
Dr. Shimada is an excellent prof and ridiculously smart. He comes to every lecture with enthusiasm and energy. Tests were based on concepts, not memorization of random facts so if you read the book youll do fine. Can definitely ramble and get on tangents if you let him. Take if you want a thorough understanding of evolution
Shimada is the most enthusiastic aprof I've ever had! Yells out GOOD MORNING each day when entering class. There are 3 exams, and about 6 projects, including a mandatory Field Museum visit and report and a poster project. Accent isn't a problem and the subject is very interesting. I'd recommend for Scientific Inquary Non-Lab Learning Domain.
Professor Shimada is easily the most enthusiastic professor I have had. He stresses the importance of concepts over facts which makes what he teaches useful and applicable to real life.He is always willing to explain and meet with students outside of class. Definitely a favorite amongst DePaul students!
Shimada and enthusiasm go hand in hand. There were many boring days, but other days he'd bring in rocks for us to "examine" and it'd be fun. The class was overall easy. I got C's on all three tests and still pulled off a B. It's important to memorize all the written sections and lists off his study guides too; those are asked for on the tests.
professor Shimada is a good professor. he's hilarious! I was never bored in his lectures. He gives specific examples. He doesn't give study guide but all you gotta do is go to class, write down important details in his lecture, review it again and again and you'll be fine. i recommend Dr. Shimada to anyone, seriously.
Dr. Shimada is an all around an amazing guy! He is the best professor I've ever had! Words cannot describe how great of a professor he is. Always making jokes during class, so lectures are never boring. He loves his sharks and children, always talking about them. You would not regret taking his class.
Shimada is one of the greatest professors I've had. He made biology really easy and entertaining. Engaging and charming.
He is very funny, enthusiastic, never runs out of energy, and gives clear examples in every topic. Take him, he's awesome.
Great professor I took his TOPICS IN PALEOBIOLOGY class and I really enjoyed the class. He brings fossils to class which he passes around the class is difficult but the class work was enjoyable he made the student do a huge research graduate level essay on a topic of the students choosing and grades it as if it was a research paper
He will talk down to you like you are a third grader that does not know how to write a college essay, then mark you half a grade down for one of his nit-picky pet peeves (being ONE LINE over a 2 1/2 page research paper). His lectures are slow and scattered, tests are suited to science majors, & has a group project/essay. Would not recommend.
I took this class as a NON-science major and I swear this man think we are biologist along side him. He treats you like a child most of the time which makes me not want to answer/ask questions in class. He "requires" you to take notes in a specific way, a way that isn't easy for me to learn and his exams are next level difficult.
I created an account just to rate this professor. Nearly the entire class was made up of NON science majors and took it to fulfill the requirement. He did not explain things thoroughly and inferred we understood complex scientific theory. Extremely tough grader, only one A on the first exam and still no curve. Do not take if not a science a major.
He's really excited about his material and class, which is awesome. However, with this class especially he essentially treated us all as science majors, so if science isn't in your wheelhouse this could be a really tough class for you.
This professor emailed us saying to be constructive when criticizing him, which is a bad sign. This is a teacher who blames students for everything, while constantly lecturing how torn-down the material is. This professor is not on the side of the students and is very selfish. I would stay away if you need to take a class for a credit.
He's of the most irrational people I've ever dealt with, which is hilarious seeing as he's convinced of the exact opposite, which he uses to justify the most ineffective teaching methods, including ridiculous tests with multiple choice questions with over 12 answers that cover content not in the lecture slides. The worst professor I've ever had.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Day 1 of class: stated that we should make friends because lecture notes (which he falsely claims contains all of the information on exams) will NOT be posted online/repeated. He does not allow make-ups on lecture attendance or labs. No study guides, typically cannot answer questions or ignores raised hands. Do not take!
Dr. Shimada is extremely knowledgable and well respected in his field. He is passionate about what he teaches, however he is a very tough grader and designs extremely hard exams. There are no study guides although he does want his students to succeed. He is not very empathetic but tries to be understanding.
the man teaches evolution but refuses to evolve as a teacher.
Dr. Shimada really just wants his students to learn and understand his material. He is a genuinely nice professor and does care about his students. He is an established researcher and is very enthusiastic about fossils, which is pretty cool. Overall a good professor.
Not much to be graded on, but I believe that is because of the way the department structured the class. Just pay attention in class and you will pass. Some of his test questions had to do with subjects we didn't really talk about, but overall he is very passionate and just wants you to understand what is going on at the end of the day
Make sure you attend every lecture and take good notes. He doesn't post his slides online and is hard to access outside of class. His test questions are quite difficult and he often uses phrases/wording he did not teach. He is passionate about biology and very passionate about his research on sharks but not a good teacher. Do not take.
Dr. Shimada was a great professor. His tests were pretty easy and very reflective of the material learned in lecture. He doesn't post his lectures online, but long as you attend lectures and take detailed notes, you should pass the class with at least a B, and if you study an A should be attainable.
Dr. Shimada is very passionate about bio and as a result, translates well into his teaching. If you take good notes and review the concepts, you'll do great in the class. He teaches at a nice pace, but if you miss something he posts the lecture slides later. I would happily take him again.
Dr. Shimada did not understand or realize how we are taking general biology and that we did not study biology for our entire lives. This makes it really hard for him to explain concepts and course material effectively without filling his lectures with jargon. He is a really great and funny person though
Covered the first 5 weeks of BIO192. Very nice and passionate prof who teaches about evolution. Material was fairly straight forward but SI sessions definitely help. Tests aren't hard if you go to class. Doesn't post the lecture slides until right before the first exam, so take good notes. There aren't any quizzes or homework either.
Horrible exams. Tests on random specific things. Horrible professor that doesn't even provide study guides nor help. Straight up teaches and leaves. No help what so ever. If you want a good grade, avoid this teacher at all costs. For an introductory bio class, this was a horrible experience.
Avoid Professor Shimada at all costs. As someone who has already taken the AP Biology course and has gotten a 5 even I am struggling. His tests are often very misleading and philosophical rather than focused on content. While as a person he is great the detail he wants you to understand for a gen bio 2 class is insane.
While as a person Shimada is great, his tests are excruciatingly difficult for no reason. More often than not there are questions 90-100% of students will miss and he will still stand by them saying it's a valid question. The questions are often nonsensical, worded very terribly, and require an extremely detailed grasp on Evolution which is unfair.
AVOID AVOID AVOID!! Terrible professor who does not take any criticism regarding the difficulty of his content. He is NOT available outside of class and REFUSES to provide any study material or strategies for his students. His test is VERY difficult and overall unless you know the EXACT definition of everything you're screwed. DO NOT TAKE!
Avoid this professor if you want an A in this class. Averages and medians for test scores are constantly around the mid to low 60s and he still thinks it's the student's problem, not his. In a class of 80, only 6 scored 90% or higher on several exams. His tests are too confusing and worded poorly and he cannot take any constructive criticism at all
Seems like a researcher who was thrown into teaching since he's at a University. Very smart guy and is funny too but his tests are very difficult and he provides little to no support out of class. He expects everyone to grasp detailed evolutionary concepts exactly in the same wording as he does and understanding general definitions is not enough.
Had him for 5 weeks of class and was a good professor! All his exams had content straight from the lectures and you don't need to read the textbook. Though, some of his exam questions were worded weirdly. I recommend consistently reviewing material and doing the SI worksheets. Overall, he's really caring and engaging.
He once told us "If I gave everyone an A, I wouldn't be doing my job right" in a class where literally 2 out of 80 students got an A on an exam. Take of that what you will, he definitely prides himself on difficulty. Had him for 5 weeks, his test questions were harder and more confusing in general. Passionate guy, god forbid he hold a review day.
You can tell this man loves biology. He is very thorough with his lectures, and you do need to pay attention and take good notes. But if you pay attention and review before tests he is really not bad. He also has an enthusiasm that made it enjoyable to go to his class every day.
Nice guy but really seems to think he is above teaching. Doesn't provide any test prep and then thinks it's funny when most people get a 60. Very picky about writing and said most people in the class were horrible writers. Not accessible outside of class or for any make up work. Science majors, you'll be fine. If not, he'll treat you like a child.
Dr. Shimada is very passionate about his work and teaching. He knows a lot and helped me diminish my confusion. I ended up being top of the class on exams (he grades on a bell curve), but only because it was the only class I actually had to study hard for. Take notes and you'll do okay. Take his class seriously and have fun with it when possible.
Professor Shimada is passionate about biology, but his tests are notoriously challenging. Attend class, take detailed notes, and utilize resources like unstuck AI to stay on top of the material. Not for the faint of heart, but rewarding if you put in the work.
Professor Shimada is well informed on the topics he is teaching but he is not a teacher. He expects you to know previous knowledge no one really knows about. Very few things graded during the quarter. His tests are the worst tests I have ever taken, the wording is very confusing and he makes his options in the multiple choice all sound similar.
Worst Prof I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM! The whole entire quarter was so frustrating. The average for each test he has given is a 50 something percent. He also sends us emails that say things like don't stress if you have received lower than a 50 on all of the passed tests. Super confusing because any grade below a 70 is failing at DePaul.
Dr. Shimada is very knowledgeable but his teaching strategy is difficult. It's all lecture, and you need to do a lot of outside work to actually conceptualize the material. He grades on a curve, but that doesn't help if someone gets an 100 and the rest get a 70 or below. He is a bit condescending, but I also think that just might be his personality
