Bro. Bessey is not only hillarious, but I found him to be a good teacher. His tests are multiple choice and straightforward, and even if you screw up there's always extra credit. Overall, I found it to be a good class.
This guy is great. He keeps it as interesting as math can be. His tests are sometimes tough but he makes it up to everyone by handing out extra credit assignments.
He is a good teacher and explains things well. His tests are no necessarily easy but they are not confusing. Every test he lets you bring in a notecard.
The math was easy but Bro Bessey made it fun!
He is really good teacher, who trys to make sure that you understand everything he is teaching in the class.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! His classes are awesome! Not only are they short and simple, he makes everything really easy to understand and gives you tons of helps! You also may find yourself having a good laugh because he is really funny!
Brother Bessey was really fun to take math 108 from. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I'd recommend going because he does half of the homework in class. He usually let us out about 30 min. early though! For tests, they're definitely not easy and you need to study even though you are allowed a 3X5 notecard. If you fail, extra credit is given too.
I did well on the tests, but the average was always like 65%, however, he gives extra credit opportunities everytime which pump your grade up 15 points! If you do your homework as a group everytime, it helps too.
I am horrible at math, and took this class scared out of my wits, but Bro Bessey is an amazing teacher. First he explains the concept then does TONZ of examples. Do you homework, and study for the test by doing examples from each chapter and youll be fine. My first A in math since 6th grade. Hes really funny, and gives Extracredit!
Bro Bessey is THE funniest math teacher I have ever had!! "And on the next page we have a picture of a fuzzy bunny. You paid what, 130 dollars to buy this textbook just so you can have a picture of two pretty white bunnies playing in the snow." Take him take him! I loved him!
He is a fairly good math teacher. He is funny and likes to use humor to teach. The downside... there are only three exams in the semester which means if you do porrly on one it will affect your grade making it difficult to recover. However, he is very good about giving extra credit and supplying ways for you to redeem yourself.
Bro. Bessey is awesome!!! So easy! He offers extra credit. Talk about awesome. He is the best teacher. I love bro. Bessey!
Good class, tests were hard though, only 25 problems so if you miss some, it really brings your grade down. He does offer 15% extra credit, but it's either doing a 5 page research paper, or buying a $8.00 cd he wrote and doing a one page paper on it. He was funny, and he is VERY helpful. Study for tests, i got a D on each and i studied hard...
I did not like Brother Bessey at all. He was lazy and didn't do what he should as a teacher. He didn't care about the students. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
This guy is a goofball! He has a newer way of teaching which is kinda cool cuz we get out like 45 minutes early! unless he doesn't know were suppose to go for an 1 1/2 haha we have this group meeting every week so we understand VERY EASY CLASS
I Do not like math at all. The class was fun, and he made it bearable for me to sit through, it was hard but math is not my subject whatsoever. Tests were extremely hard, but if you study hard you should do fine. he's a good teacher, i just don't like math period!
I loved his class! It wasn't a problem if I missed a day or 2. He has you work in groups of 3 for homework. If 2 of you get it done, then it counts for the whole group. There is always extra credit offered after a test. I took this class from another teacher and failed....took it from Bro. Bessey and got a C. He understands you aren't a math major
Bro. Bessey is an awesome teacher! He is HILARIOUS! I hate math, but he made it way fun! The tests were kinda hard, but if you do your homework and ask questions, its not bad at all. I recomend him to everyone!
I had heard many good things about Brother Bessey and was excited for his class. I enjoyed his lectures, but the tests were AWFUL - full of trick questions. The class average on the exams was a D. I would not recommend this professor for Math 108 to anyone.
I had heard Brother Bessey highly praised before taking his 108 class. I liked him a lot as a person and a lecturer-- he was interesting and friendly. However, his tests were TERRIBLE. The class average on all three tests was a D! On the whole I found this class very frustrating and would not recommend this professor to anyone.
Cool guy. If I could pick any fictional char to describe him, Dr. House. This guy has great sarcasim. If you take a fall class from him, prepare to hear him complain about not getting as long for Thanksgiving as students! No mandatory homework, only 4 tests and gives major extra credit for each. Teaches from the book, awsome guy!
Brother Bessey has a great sense of humor. He makes coming to class as fun as a math class can be. Many test questions were ambiguous, so plan on doing extra-credit (which isn't hard) if you want an A or B out of this class.
Extremely cool guy, really funny, and nice. Attendance not mandatory, extra credit available if class average is low (every test including final). Grade based on exams and weekly group reports sent by email. Thought I was going to get a B+ but I got an A. :D
EASY!!!! No homework, except email in that you met with your group 1 a week. Tests are EASY too!
I really enjoyed this class. His manorisms we so funny to me, he was a geeky guy! but i really enjoyed it, and it was pretty easy. As long as you understand the homework, you will do very well on the test. It was a very non-demanding class.
TAKE THIS PROF!! Doesnt take attendance. If you study the material, the tests are not too difficult. At first I thought he was boring, but his mannerisms are so funny. The only thing you turn in is a weekly email with your group. I dont know if he knows how long class is supposed to be but we always got out of our 1.5hr class 30-45 min early.
Bessey is a breeze, he gives extra credit on the test if everyone does bad, so that helps out a ton, i would recommend him to anyone
He is so funny and so fun! make the material extremely easy to learn and gives super easy test!
Brother Bessey is hilarious. He teaches well and at the same time is able to joke about what he is teaching. We constantly laugh. He makes fun of the textbook which is always entertaining. 3 tests, 4 reflective essays and 2 excel projects (you get the points if you do them, basically a buffer for your grade).
This is the teacher to take this class from!!! He is easy, fun, and is willing to help you out whenever you need it. Tests are not hard. Essays are based on completion as well as excel projects. Dont take this class from anyone else but him!
very easy A, as long as you do all your work! i would def. recommend!
Easy-est math class I have ever taken. No assignments only group meetings once a week. Study for tests and you will be fine. He is pretty funny, but no one can make Math interesting.
Brother Bessey is hilarious. He makes fun of the book which makes everyone feel better about it. There are 4 writing assignments and 2 excel projects but as long as you do them, you get the points. Besides those assignments, tests are the only grades so they help a lot just in case you don't do well on tests. Highly recommend!!!
if you are taking an easy class, don't take him.he's too smart for easy classes & will make you feel ridiculously stupid if you ask a question. i'm sure he's great for higher math classes. very smart guy, definately knows his stuff. material was presented pretty well. you have to write a few papers.
He's an ok teacher but I felt he did not know what he was talking about. Class was Calc 2 and I felt it was easier than my high school class.
I honestly feel bad for bro. Bessey. This is prob. One of the most rediculous classes at byui. He grades easy, curved tests, and simple projects. Just copy the notes from the board each class and you will ace the tests. (you can bring a notecard into the tests).
He is a very funny and intelligent teacher. He makes jokes and makes fun of math problems and he explains things very well. He is willing to help out and just a genuine guy. Take his class if you want to learn to like math.
Best math class I've ever taken. The material was hard but the teacher made is comprehensible and interesting. Tests were very challenging, but the grading policy was fair. I would recommend him to anyone.
Took Calc 2 and loved the class. The teacher is an absolut genius. Even though the assignments & exams were very hard, he explained the material so well that most everyone in the class learned the calc concepts. A few hot-shots may have breezed through the course, but most of us in the class had to work our tells off to pass the class.
I never liked math, but Bro. Bessey completely changed that. NOt only did I learn how math can be used in real life but i learned importnt gospel principles that relate to the math concepts. And his e-book on infinity is amazing. If you can, take 108 from Bro. Bessey, youll be glad you did.
I can't say that I actually like math because of him, but I do enjoy going to his class because he cracks jokes all the time. He gave us a 15% curve on the first test by just doing an easy worksheet off lds.org. its a MWF class for me, but we meet with a group on wednesdays INSTEAD of class, which is nice.
I'll be honest. I got better test scores by doing the online math lab instead of going to class. Hopefully that's enough information to express my opinion of this professor.
Bro Bessey's class was the easiest math class I've ever taken! He has you write three essays on a book he wrote, but as long as you do it, you get points. There isn't many point opportunities, so as long as you do well on tests, you'll be fine. Also allowed a 3X5 card for tests that really helped. No comprehensive tests!
I am really bad at math, and I struggled. He tried to help, but I'm a lost cause when it comes to math, not kidding. His tests were good because my tutor helped me make my 3x5 card to take to use. Plus, he conferenced with me after. Overall, pretty good.
I had a really tough start to my semester because of my depression&was super nervous to take math 'cuz Im super bad at math. It actually ended up being the class I stressed about least Hes super nice &tellsgoodjokes & I loved how he had us do wordsoftheday(Im an english major)sometimes i drew more than take notes but i enjoyed being there everyday
Terrible teacher! Didn't explain anything! I absolutely did not learn anything from him.
This guy was not only my best math teacher, he is the best teacher I've had at BYU-I in the 3 years i've been here! Explain hard concept real well and his tests are hard but fair. I got a B- because I didn't do some of the excel projects. My friend in the class said the projects weren't really that tuff. Had too many classes to keep up with. :(
Easiet math teacher ever and I don't even know how to do math. The prep quizzes are literally the quick quizzes in the textbook and the answers are in the back of the book. He provides study guides for the test, and he makes his "own study guide" which is literally the test with all the answers. One test grade is dropped - I skipped my final :)
Good class, good teacher. Pretty easy. I kind of crammed for each test and still got good grades. Just keep on top of the work and you are sure to do well
Going to class in pointless. It's easier on your own. He just mumbles to himself the whole time and seems frazzled. Getting the grade is easy and his online test reviews are SO HELPFUL! He's not super nice to students but he does want you to do well and he does his best. Just use the tools he gives you online and you'll do well.
I took a hybrid class and honestly I felt no motivation to go to class after the first two months. Brother Bessey is funny, but he's really sarcastic and he really doesn't teach you. It's honestly best if you teach yourself.
I've never really been amazing at math, but never been awful either. His tests were okay and I did decent on them. You have a fairlarge amount of homework. On average I studied 9+ hours a week in this class and only received a C. When I asked for help he shut me down. Only saying "i don't know how to help you, have a good rest of the semester." :(
He's a good and funny teacher. Every math 108 class is going to be hard but he's an easy grader and when it comes to explaining things, he can do that well. As long as you do the projects and essays, you'll get a 100 on them. He lets you use an index card for every test, take advantage of that!!! And I took the hybrid course.
Hybrid Section: Brother Bessey keeps his lectures, homework assignments, and grading simple. I didn't have to do a lot of the reflection assignments my friends in other Math 108 classes had to do. He drops your 2 lowest homework grades, your 2 lowest quiz grades, and your lowest exam grade at the end. There are no extensions or retakes on anything.
Overall a great teacher! I really enjoyed the class.
He does not really help you to understand things. From my personal experience, all he does in class is go through the problems. He never gives a lecture, which, in Math, is almost mandatory for understanding. All in all, his teaching capabilities don't help you very well unless you're accustomed to how he teaches.
He is such a sweet guy. if you are looking for a laid back teacher who does not take attendance then this is the class for you. He does just read straight from the book though and those are his lectures, so don't take if you need a good refresher on the material.
He does not explain a lot. He usually talks to himself as he works on the problem on the board by himself. There's extra credit for every test that helps a TON. I'm in the hybrid class, so all of our homework is due Saturday at midnight which is nice. The tests are pretty easy and all you do in class is go over practice test questions.
Math 108 in and of itself is an easy course required for all students at BYU-I to take and pass. Brother Bessey canceled some of his classes and I really didn't see any purpose in atending. I was able to complete the entire course without a textbook and with my Iphone as a calc. I would reccomend this course to anyone wanting an easy A.
Good teacher. I took the hybrid class so I only had one class period per week. It was a fairly easy class. Gives lots of extra credit. He prepares his students well for the tests.
Bro. Bessey is by far the best math teacher I have ever had! He teaches very good and tries to engage all the students in discussion and problem solving. I learned so many practical things that I think will really help me after college. His sense of humor was both entertaining and educational. He really wants everyone to succeed.
Super frustrating teacher. I have a disability and he was really hard to work with. His classes didn't do much to teach me ( or my roommates) AT ALL.
This is my third time taking Math 108--- I have some sort of learning disability but too embarrassed to be officially diagnosed. Bro Bessey was the only teacher who took the time to help me get through the class successfuly. Be aware though that if you want a high grade you will need to do all of the math projects and study hard for the exams.
This teacher will not help you on your homework or any questions you have outside of class. If you have a question, he expects you to bring it to the Math Lab. He Is not very helpful, even in class.
I used to take calculus classes in high school so I didn't have any trouble with this math class. It was pretty nice though that he went over the exam questions in class. It helped me to understand some things that I was stuck on. Otherwise though, he's kinda funny and wants you to succeed. He'll drop a low exam score at the end of the semester.
He's kind of odd. When he does examples on the board, he kind of goes off into his own little world and does it by himself without help or questions from the class. He's not the best at actually teaching math, but if you ask questions he'll help. I took the hybrid class and only showed up maybe 3 times the whole semester and did fine.
Brother Bessey is extremely organized and CLEAR as to what he wants you to learn. I always enjoy participating in his classes.
Brother Bessey's teaching style was very difficult for me to follow at first. I got an F on the first test, got A's on all the rest. He mumbles but everything he says is important. He can be sarcastic but not mean. Harsh grader and tough homework load, I spent so many hours on this class. I would take this class from someone else.
Class is really lax, which is nice when you have a full schedule. Bro. Bessey centers his classes around helping you pass the exams and explains things very thoroughly. If you understand the concepts it can be boring but it's super helpful when you don't.
He's a good guy and he really knows the math, but he has the students teach and that's not helpful. Also the class was geared to engineers (here is a formula, now plug and chug) with almost no mathematical rigor. Homework was easy. Study for the test based on the hints he give you and you'll do great.
We were never taught math. We were just given assignments and were supposed to pull the knowledge of how to do them out of our butts. BIG thumbs down for me. I actually love math and it comes very easy to me, but this class SUCKED!
Bro. Bessey is amazing! He really teaches you how to think about quantitative problems and good ways to learn hard things. The class was engaging. I loved how we discussed complex issues with others in the class before making a final decision myself. He was very good about guiding us thru the hard problems without jumping to an answer for us.
Brother Bessey is a great guy. Really dry sense of humor, explains what's going on, & cares about his students in my experience. The workload itself isn't bad, you work on a review packet for the test together in class, homework isn't bad, and if you pay attention and study the review, you'll be prepared for the test.
Brother Bessey is a really great teacher! He's super helpful and always willing to help students succeed. Homework isn't bad, and there's like 3 projects in excel which aren't bad either. You do the study guide throughout the unit in class for review before the test. Would recommend him!
I had him for a block class. He goes off on tangents and does not explain things very well. I could go to the math lab and they'll explain the material to me better. However, I love the study guides (they are JUST like the test), and he is more chill with the block classes.
Brother Bessey is so funny. Sometimes he goes off on sidetracks and rambles. This was the EASIEST class I have ever taken- I literally never showed up and still almost got an A. He drops the lowest score for tests, quizzes, projects, etc. The only reason I got a B is because I accidentally ended a test early. East teacher, even if he doesn't teach!
Brother Bessey's a pretty solid teacher. He's a little bland at first, but he actually has a dry sense of humor that catches you off guard. His classes are the same thing over and over, and he's easily distracted, but for a basic math class, that's not much of a concern. Not the most exciting, but just show up and do your work, and you'll be fine.
In this class you are divided up into groups and each group gets a problem from the exam review packet. You spend time on all three units studying exactly what will be on the tests. So while attendance isnt taken, you should be there! This class may be harder to follow if you arent great at Math but just ask him to slow down and hell explain it.
Brother Bessey was an interesting teacher. He splits the class up into groups and each class day the group would solve only one problem from the practice exam packet. I couldn't stand how slow it was and how pointless attendance was so I stopped going. All of the class materials are online, so I passed easily from working at home.
Super boring class, the material is pretty easy but he always tried to stretch even the smallest, easiest things into long discussions over the deeper theories of these topics. Made the class seem so long. Good teacher for people who like learning about basic math theory.
I LOVE THIS MAN. Wow okay he says in every homework assignment you can skip up to 2 problems, and at the end of the semester he'll drop up to 2 assignments. Sometimes he doesn't hold class so we can work on assignments. He's funny and he understands what it's like to be a student. A great professor.
Such a kind teacher! He really cares about his students and makes sure we are understanding the material. He drops many assignments/test which helps grade a lot.
I basically taught myself in this class. Yes there were zoom calls and he went over things. But he is like a robot. Other people in the class and myself quit getting on the zoom calls and just did the readings, homework, and reviews and all passed. The tests are 25 questions so you have very careful if you miss more then 2 you won't get an A.
Very average teacher. I have no problem with him at all--he did answer questions in class when asked.
He may be nice, but he doesn't teach. I had to have a friend teach me the entire course honestly. Good thing about him is he does drop a lot of assignments. As long as you get all your homework done, and the case studies done, you can fail the exams and receive a passing grade.
He is a funny guy. Most class periods you work through the practice packets with classmates. You can do the homework assignments ahead of time and complete the course early. Then you just have to wait to take the test.
Brother Bessey wants you to succeed. Plain and simple. He is aware that 108 is a required class and does everything in his power to help you pass. He is very clear about what you will be tested on for the exams and helps you prepare accordingly. A big plus is he allows you to get ahead in the class, so you can be proactive.
Brother Bessy is a great mathematician but doesn't teach well. I learn the concepts mostly by going to the math center for hours to practice the problems for the upcoming exam. His lectures are difficult to listen to and understand. He teaches in a ambiguous and convoluted way. Nice guy. He tries. just not the best teacher for me.
Brother Bessy makes sure that you are prepared for the Unit exams. He goes over the problems in class and answers any questions you have on them. I will say though, that I think going to the Math Lab helped me a lot more than being in class.
Drops lowest homework grade and lowest test. He goes over problems on the review every class which is nice. Can check your answers on the platform he uses for homework unlimited times.
This semester, he cancelled class almost weekly. Normally, I would like that, but I have no idea what was going on ever. He is a very easy grader and makes sure everyone passes the class.
I felt as though he threw me in the deep end for math. I've never been good at math and it has been a couple years since I've been in school and in math class. He mainly talks about how we use it and not as much as teaching how to do it step by step. He also isn't too entertaining.
Professor Bessey is a quietier professor than most. Very nice and willing to answer questions. Very hard to engage in the lectures and questions that he gives. It was sad to see since attendance wasnt mandatory most students just didnt come to class so my class was very small. I still did learn many lessons for math. An ok class.
I was good at math in HS, but this class kicked me in the butt. I barely got a B. The teacher was quieter, so it was hard to hear him during class. Lots of online homework. There were 3 exams then an optional final. Overall, I heard that there were much better teachers than him.
Took class over summer session. It was self paced and graded off of 3 exams and 2 papers. Students only had to come to class if they had an exam they wanted to take or to ask questions. I finished the class in under 2 weeks with a 98% in the class.
