very stuck up about the subject. he almost doesn't want you there unless you don't need to be there.
History of Science...very interesting course, very intelligent professor, small projects, exams requiring cramming information, get a good group partner, and its a great class.
Took Cryptography - Good teacher, gets more modest (from egomaniacal) as the course progresses, does oddball things.
Very rarlely you meet people like him. He?s one of a kind, a genius, or atleast has the elements of genius. His broad knowledge and interests from Lord Byron?s poetry to modigliani paintings, Gauss?s life and of course hot girls make his class amazing..just take it and don?t worry about the grade.
Very eccentric. Tries to scare people off the first few days, yet if you stick with it its not so bad. His problem sets are difficult but his tests are much easier. Don't overthink on his tests, if the questions look easy then they probably are. I find him a very enjoyable and eclectic teacher.
A God among men. I've never had a teacher who taught as concisely and effectively. Old enough to have a ton of experience; young enough to relate to the class and not be jaded or boring. There is nothing he wants as much as he wants the class to learn. He uses jokes and anecdotes liberally but will always teach you everything you need to know.
Boklan has forever changed the way I think about numbers.
Boklan is a great and excellent professor, you can tell he is very knowledgeable in his field(s) and loves to teach. He has a sense of humor and is always making jokes.Good to see professors who can relate to the young crowd.Drawback, his handwriting is horrible and sometimes talks too fast.Class is very difficult but he pushes you to be your best.
One of the absolute worst professors I have ever had. I'm a straight A student and I had to drop the class. The man is totally ridiculous (in a bad way), speeds through the material and doesn't explain anything that he is doing. When I asked for help, he told me I was on my own. If you are smart you will avoid this professor at all costs.
This man has completely changed my life. He's a great professor, who demands hard work par excellence. If you don't know how to work hard (read: 5+ hours of research DAILY), then don't take the class. It's that simple. Funny, brilliant, helpful, and a genius. One of the best classes I've ever taken, and probably the best class in the department.
Terrible professor. His exams are absolute BS and he does not explain the material well at all. Oh, and don't fall for all of the "this man changed my life" comments. He's an egomaniac and I wouldn't be surprised if he's rating himself.
talks kinda fast, but u'll get use to it. has ability to melt-down difficult concepts into understandable terms. use full 2 wks for problem sets, looking at ?s in all different ways to come up with the answer. exams on a scale from 1-10 are a 6.5-7. is a class that is doable with consistent effort, that is, not for cram-session type of students.
You enjoy failing courses? Go for it.
Few can make one hate math as much as he can. He speeds through lectures, and his homework and exams are the stuff nightmares are made of. I dedicated far more time to his assignments than those from any other class, and still found myself unable to get within a B range. If you have the option, take Jennifer Whitehead for CS 220.
VERY HARD PROFESSOR!! He is helpful if you go to him after class. Even so, I had trouble in his class and I'm usually a good student. Quiz questions were always difficult. So I repeat, HE IS A DIFFICULT PROFESSOR! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
He is a terrible professor. Class is easy whatever, he has personality problems. I dont like him.
Boklan's crypto class is challenging and a pure joy to attend. I was honestly dreading it after reading his reviews, but it turned out to be my favorite class all semester. He is a tough grader, he expects more than most are used to, but his grading policy is fair (dont worry about 50's an A is around a 70~). Long story short Challenging and FUN!
Boklan is a tough professor, but is more than willing to work with you if you show to his office hours and ask questions. Exams are tough, but allows students to sit in on his other courses. He's a really good person, funny, and can help with non-CS courses (meaning Math). Truly brilliant. get on his good side!!
He is an absolutely great professor! Makes the subject super interesting and the tests are not that hard as long as you understand what is going on in class. 3 tests, no HW.
His coursework will challenge you and push you past your limits. While difficult, he knows his stuff, and teaches it very well. Also very math-oriented; lots of number theory. Math majors will follow him more easily than CS majors, but what he teaches has some interesting real-world applications. Not easy but you'll appreciate the things you learn.
I would not recommend this professor to you if you are an average kid who is interested in CS. He is very hard and tests are night mares and he takes off a lot of points only for small mistakes. SO PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU ARE EXCELLENT IN CS. Thankyou
Not a good professor, no makeups so had to give a midterm with heavy sickness, clear outcome - did bad, asked for help and he refused . Exams are hard and expects a perfect answer, if not then all points are gone. Wanna fail, take him.
Boklan is an amazing professor. He's very smart and loves what he does. He's always there to help so don't shy away if you don't understand anything. Be ready to come out of this class so much smarter than before. Every topic is beyond interesting.
Fascinating lecturer. More difficult and technical than other sections of this course, but worth the effort. People in other sections have done his assignments because they are so interesting. If you really hate mathematical critical thinking, this may not be for you. But otherwise, take it. People actually look forward to going to class.
I am taking his class second time and still no ray of hope. I think I might fail his class second time because let me tell you that he is toughest grader I've ever seen. He does not give a curve and he kinda enjoys failing students. So I may not recommend this professor to you, If you super smart and nerd then go for it. #nerdclass #badprof.
This professor teaches the material decently but his tests and homework are ridiculously difficult. Even if you study for days you will still fail his class. His hws go beyond what should be included in the syllabus and they make up a large portion of your grade. He expects all his students to fail and does so, don't recommend this professor.
SIMPLY: NEVER EVER TAKE HIM, unless You want to screw your GPA.
Very fascinating lecturer. Doesn't assign homework. I found the textbooks useless for studying. I had better luck searching the Internet for problem sets and material directly related to what Boklan lectured on in class. He does like to put clever questions on exams to see who truly understands the material. Very strict grading criteria.
Don't even bother taking him. Exam questions nothing like what was went over in lecture. Opportunity for partial credit only on 25% of entire test, but you have to give a near perfect answer. Assignments are even worse so you won't even have a chance to make up if you mess up on the midterm or final. I got a A in the prerequisite course(CSCI 120).
#Boklan is Horrible!!!!!!!
He is not a good professor, because he goes over the material really quickly and also the exams were really tough. he doesn't believe in partial credit,so if you can answer perfectly then go for it, else stay away.
Please stay away from his class he will ruin your gpa.
Kent Boklan is very fair, I found him easy after reading some assignments
I dont know why hes getting so many 1s, his rating should not be that down
His class was so far the most challenging one I've took in QC. His lecture is brief and on point. However, you have to find your own study materials after class. The test will check if you truly and fully understand the concepts. Don't expect a question you've seen before. This class requires a lot of active thinking and practice on your own.
Don't be late for class or you will be shamed in front of everyone. No homework. Textbook useless, very old and not helpful. Find your own study material. Tests are very difficult. Very tough grader. But some students seem to love him
Professor Boklan's class is objectively hard and you can only do well if you put in the effort. That being said, he is an extremely interesting guy and an amazing teacher. Professors who really know what they are talking about and have actually had real experience in the computer science world are hard to come by at QC. Highly Recommend.
Boklan is a compelling lecturer and it would be a missed opportunity to go to QC without taking him at least once. The difficulty of his class is overstated. The tests can be a bit tricky if you don't fully understand the concepts, but a 65 average gets you a B. Go to class and put in the work and you'll be fine.
Someone whose initial impression should tell you that they're someone competent and respectable. One of very rare cases where you find an enjoyable experience in a hard class genuinely because the professor makes you want to learn. Inspiring and very entertaining class. Constantly impresses and very fair grading scale.
Interesting classes. Weak students have to drop. He is good for the rest.
Kent Boklan is amazing professor. Not an easy class but he teaches very good. Don't take him if you don't care about learning. He makes his class exciting. Study hard from the beginning! Attend office hours to annoy him with automatas:) He's very funny and nice person to chat with. Don't get into dangerous zone (40-50), study hard. Tests are fair.
Intentionally hard tests and fun teacher. No electronics :/ My only gripe about him is how he handles people that come in late. He complains about people that come in late to be a distraction to class and disrupts the "flow" yet he stops class to ridicule people that come in late. This is quite hypocritical and also very petty of him to do.
Best professor I've had. 320 you can get away with just paying attention and studying from notes. 365 is the most difficult CS course offered and by the end of the semester you can count the students with fingers. The experience however is very rewarding. Don't take the latter unless you're willing to commit to it. A- for 320. B- for 365.
His exams are tough , very TOUGH !! and he seems to enjoy to see his students struggling to solve them. He is kinda evil. For real. Take him, you'll see. And get ready to take it again. His classes are dynamic and entertaining that's for sure... but when the tests come.. the fun is OVER.
Class is difficult but by no means impossible. Professor Boklan accounts for this: a grade of A only requiring 78% or above. GO TO LECTURE and make sure you understand all the problems he does during lecture. Simply following along without practicing won't do you much good. Doing this, at least a B should be well within reason.
Dr. Boklan is great lecturer. He explains concepts in a very precise and concise manner. However, he likes to make exams that are extremely hard to understand. Haft of the time he is trying to trick you so you mess up. His grading doesnt make things any easier. There is literally no room for partial credit. Concepts of this course have 0 applicat
Took him for Cryptography. One of the hardest class I've ever taken but the most interesting one. If your semester isn't stacked, take this class. You'll work hard for your grade but you'll learn so much more in terms of encryption and security (not hacking). He has a certificate from NSA, so you know he's very knowledgeable in this field.
Professor Boklan is the most rude and arrogant professor I have seen in QC. Never respect his student. The material is okay before second exam, after that everything is going to aspect. The average score for every exam is ranged to 45-55. If you are good at math, most likely you will pass the course with a C or B-.
3 exams, get 50 each you will pass. Exam is extreme hard. Very rude and no respect to students at all.
If you're one to slack or just memorize, you will not do well. Any class he teaches values understanding and application, not mindless memorization and regurgitation of information. If your goal is to learn and challenge yourself, this is for you. People struggle because they expect not to critically think and use learned concepts to form answers.
The worst professor I have taken at QC. Never respect students. Avoid him and switch to professor Obrenic.
He gives grades based on his personal preference. I reported him to CUNY Undergraduate Scholastic Standards Committee (USSC) abut this, one month later, he reported me to QC behavior team. But it was ok because he has no evidence. Report him if you have no choice to take his class and get an undeserved grade.
Don't late for class, otherwise you will be shamed. No respect to students, no asking questions.
The lecture was ok, but the exam was extremely hard. Avoid him.
Tough grader. The exams were difficult. If you work really hard, you could probably pass with C because this guy will give you hard time and enjoy it when you are struggling.
Tough grader. Knows how to teach but his style is just old fashioned. His test questions are extremely hard, which you have never seen in the class.
Worst professor ever at QC. A arrogant guy.
Professor Boklan is one of the best professors in the CS department. His lectures are very interesting and he teaches the material really well and in-depth. However, you really have to pay attention in class and work on the problems he assigns outside of class. Exams are definitely not easy but with practice, it is very possible to pass his class.
Some people hate him, some people like him. Take the class to figure it out. This is one of the only CS courses in QC where you are not handed your grade, you have to work for it. Grading is straight forward, 60s in all 3 exams gets you a B, 70+ on all 3 gets you an A-. Just practice the material everyday and you should be fine.
Everything you have heard about his class is true. His exams are incredibly difficult. If you sign up for his class, it is likely you will have to take this course again. Try to never miss a class, you will probably suffer for missing one class of material. If you are in his class, try to read as much as you can about the subject away from class.
Overall, the class is considered to be difficult by the masses but the grading criteria and the content of his exams are crystal clear. The textbook he lists as required isn't mandatory, the examples in the book tend to be harder than any of his questions so if you pay attention to the lecture and use the book it should be fairly straightforward.
He starts the semester telling you not to believe what everybody else has to say about him. Unless he changes that whole shpeel, just go to a different professor or drop him. He's not worth the struggle. He is intelligent and has the attitude of RDJ's Iron Man/Tony Stark so that should tell you what you'll be dealing with.
Wonderful professor. Definitely not for everyone because he does not pull any punches on his exams, but if you're willing to work for your grade definitely take him. You only need to average a 70 across his 3 exams to land in the A range or around 50 on each to get a C. The exams are tough but they follow the class work and homework very closely.
I don't like his personality, but he grades fairly. You know exactly what will be on the test, no surprises. The class is hard but if you study, you'll be good. Don't ever skip a lecture or you will be lost. Do the homework he assigns. The worst part about this class is that he makes fun of people who come in late.
Really hard test grader. No partial Credits... lots of spiderman references
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Extremely tough papers and he tries to be over smart.
Exams are insanely hard. He does go over topics and exam questions in class, but unless you attend every lecture, study everyday, and memorize everything, you won't get good grades. Class material is already useless if you want to be a software engineer, putting in so much work to barely pass an useless class is just not worth it.
Not worth it
He's just so so bad. Do yourself a favor and never take his classes. Assignments and exams have nothing to do with what is taught in lecture or textbook. Loves failing people and giving zeros, discourages you, is extremely harsh and rude, refuses to help you, AND makes the class almost impossible to pass. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Not worth it at all.
He is a great professor, his class is very interesting, you do not want to sleep. The class is a little be hard. If you work hard, and pay attention, it is can be pass.
Cares more about punishing students, catching them for teaching etc. Kent, I know you read these, maybe if you spend all that time actually teaching and making sure students understand instead of penalizing them, your students will be intrigued and want to learn. Looks like youre showing off that you know how to do it be actually teaching. FU!!!!!
Just dont do it. I never felt met a professor more arrogant in my life. His tests are insane and youre guaranteed to have a 90% chance to fail his test. Harsh grader. If you make a little mistake on a problem (Ex. Not adding a star) all of your points is gone. Dont listen to any positive review about him. Dont take him for 320 and 220
no one can deny that he is really intelligent. he knows his stuff. sometimes he makes you feel that you wont pass the class unless you are one of those who studies day n nght. But for others if you really want to pass you have to work your b off. there no such thing as curve Or partial crdit. My advce if u 9 u will study hard take him if not avoid!
I dont mind the hard work but his attitude is the worst ive ever seen and grades so bad that you get all the points off for a tiny mistake. He is not understanding at all and spends most of the time talking about topics that wont be on the tests avoid him!!
JUST DONT DO IT! He gives problem even he has difficulty solving and calls them "interesting". He's more worried about catching you cheat than teaching you. No partial credit! He gives himself good reviews on here to trick you into thinking he's good. I promise you'll regret it if you take him. 220 is hard but with him it's almost impossible. DONT!
Amazing class, I have never learned so much from anyone else. The class is not hard, it's like most other CS classes but his grading is brutal, will give you 4/20 points for a 2 page solution for a minor mistake. But the real issue is his ignorance, we are not MIT students. His goal is to pick out the select few and that's the problem.
I took Boklan back a couple semesters ago. Had to withdraw as I was failing bad. But I will say he is a very unique professor and extremely intelligent. Don't take him if you aren't ready to put in a serious amount of work. Docks points like crazy. But the man knows what he's talking about though. If you even get a C, your next level smart.
He isn't perfect, but it shows that he cares about teaching and his students success. He is knowledgeable and willing to help explain material in his office hour. The extra study time with him makes a difference, and he is personable in smaller groups. A tough grader who strives to catch cheaters, so don't. Read the text & do practice problems.
There is some professor who wants you to do good in the class but I feel he literally wants to fail the whole class. The most terrible professor I ever had. No matter how hard you study he will only give you bunch of zero's in his tests. No partial credits at all. This class is not that hard but he makes it look like a NASA project.
Very little feedback, huge ego. Go to all office hours and practice a lot. Never gives partial credit
Professor Boklan is by far one of the worst Professors I've had. He has a passion for what he teaches but he HAS to understand many students do not share that passion. His exams are ridiculously difficult and he always says "iF yOu sTuDy ThE tOpiCs eNoUgH yOu'LL bE gOoD". No one has the kind of time he imagines we do.
His head is so beautiful. He will make a better next generation of Mr. Clean than as a professor.
Very difficult. He will make your brain hurt. He doesn't care about you trying. Wrong answer and you get a zero. Very tough grader. Don't expect him to curve. He'd rather fail you then help you.
Test are impossible
take this class with him if you want to delay your graduation.
He gives good lectures but exams are impossible. He cares more about cheating than give a proper exam. Gives 3+ pages with only instruction on how to take the exam, something simple yet he makes it that complicated. This are just the instructions, imagine the exam, too long & no time, even the short Q's. I can go on but can't so read other reviews!
He's very bad. Just don't take him. I took him for a second time because I had no other choice and now I wished I just sat out the semester. Literally cried because of this class. 90 people took the class and 20 passed. A pass is a 45(C+). Let that sink I. 70 300 level students could not get a 45. Think about that.
Passive aggression in the form of a person. Complains that students don't use office hours and takes up a third of the class on it. Pop quizzes meant to throw you off and tests are "fair" is what he would say. It's only fair if you get lucky and get the easier questions first and don't get time gated for most of the test. Overall avoid.
Pretend that this "professor" don't exist. He's a former government official, so in other words "corrupt". Probably left the NSA because he was not smart enough so he tried to flex his intelligence to a bunch of teens and people in there early twenties. It's impossible to defend this "professor" as he only cares about failing students for his ego.
This man's ego is so huge that he actually bragged about his failure as a professor to his students.
He is a great professor, and you will surely enjoy his lectures. He is excellent when explaining the concepts studied in this course, but don't be fooled! Don't treat this class like a walk in the park. Take this as a warning from the past. If you don't give this class respect from the beginning, it will surely cause you anxiety as time goes on.
Professor Boklan is an excellent lecturer. If you show up to class, do the HW, and keep up with the lecture, you will do well on the exams. Highly recommend others to take this class.
Great professor for learning, you'll have to work hard for your grade, but he's worth it in the long run, you learn a ton of material
Hilarious, in the first week of class he said all that was needed was 20 minutes a day to do well in his course. Less funny was in office hours, when he said to a student "Go ahead, write in chat so we can laugh at you because you're wrong". Being hard is fine. Boklan, however, also seems not to want his students to succeed. 98 enrolled, 11 passed.
I worked very hard for my C. What was disappointing was that Boklan said a lot of things that were encouraging and made sense, but when it came time to actually answer questions or give feedback he preferred to make students feel dumb. Exams are hard for bad reasons: wall-of-text instructions, bizarre formatting intended to confuse, time crunch.
1 error on your work, and it's already over. If he tells you not to read the reviews because "they're not true", it's because it's quite the contrary. The negative reviews are VERY true and to the point. Any "good" reviews are either by the professor himself, or someone who's coping. If possible, take literally any other professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Grades are only determined by 3 exam each worth 33 points except the final being worth 34. Need 45 points to pass with a C. In my opinion, grading criteria is fine but EXAMS ARE A LOT HARDER than what you learn in class. NO CURVE whatsoever and brags about students dropping his class. Ive put so much effort just to fail
There are 3 exams and the exams are so hard. Prof said pass at 20 out of 33. But the students have a hard time getting this 20. Enrollment was 93, all of them drop except 14. Never take his class.
Not a lenient professor, and this is a HARD class . If you are rusty with ANY of the CS required math classes, you should avoid it. That being said, he teaches this class wonderfully, and the projects and problem sets he creates, while difficult, provide real insight on the topic. This class requires quite A LOT of time.
Take him if you are GOD gifted talented. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Grades are only determined by 3 exam each worth 33 points except the final being worth 34.
No extra credit Whatever your grade is for 3 exams added and divided by 3 Exams are long Little time. Dont answer all the questions Only answer the ones you know If it takes 5 minutes a problem skip it 4 problems with multiple subproblems If you are not confident in the material Dont expect to answer every question
If you want to challenge your self take him, If you just want to complete the degree please choose someone one else, you will thank me.
Honestly exams are not even hard. If you study and understand instead of trying to memorize concepts. You will pass. If you fail an exam, you are going to hit yourself on the head because it was so easy to fail. My pro tip for you is to do all the proofs/long questions first then do the short answers. Don't expect to ace to the exam.
Prof Boklan is a top professor at QC, but only if you accept that you WILL work for your grade. His lectures are very fun to listen to, you need to take good notes. It's classes like this that build character, and create memories that will last long after you graduate. KDB expects the best from his students and tries to force that out of you.

prof boklan is by far one of the worst prof i ever seen at queens college. not only is he a terrible chair for the college as well, his teaching are terrible and is a horrible human being. I had asked him if i could somehow make up for an exam due to one my family members passing away and he gave the worse response ever. DO NOT TAKE HIM
It is so frustrating being in this guys class. He teaches well, but his exams are such a pain. He makes it harder for no reason. He's a wannabe MIT professor, teaching at a CUNY. 45 is passing in a 300 lvl CS course, that really says a lot. Not worth taking this class with him.
Boklan is the definition of everything a professor should never be. He discourages you, laughs at you, embarrasses you. Every lecture was an hour of listening to him complain about his wife and brag about what he knows. Asked him for help, he said nothing but "stop overthinking."
Professor Boklan was one of the best lecturers I have had at QC. Getting a C in the course is pretty achievable however getting higher than a C will require you to put in some work. I did half of his homework and I never bothered to learn any Pumping Lemma and reduction proofs and I still got a C. Exam 1 Was much Harder Than Exam 2 andFinal idk y
This lightbulb looking guy thinks he is a god. He does not care about you whatsoever. He genuinely enjoys seeing his students suffer. He needs to realize this is college, not the military. Perhaps he needs some therapy to sort out his childhood issues.
Do not take him. He will also say do the homework's and study at least 30 mins everyday to pass. Trust me yowl think everything is okay until you reach his exams. His expectation is so bad, expecting us to solve problems like him when he has been doing it for about 20 years. Just take the class with someone else
Best Professor for the 320 class. Teaches very well, very insightful lectures. Learned a lot from him! Exams can be challenging but doable if you study.
Boklan you will learn a lot from him! Very knowledgable with the subject matter. Take him for the CSCI 320 class.
Lol this guy still writes his own reviews? Do not take this class. Good lectures, but those exams are brutal for no reason. He makes those exams way harder than they should be. Teaching to ruin students confidence, that's really what he does. And he says don't believe the reviews, but that's complete bullshit. Not worth the stress and pain.
Insightful lectures, if you attend classes and take notes. you have to practice the material and ask questions, and then regarding exams, it can be challenging but the course is doable to pass if you work hard for it.
Worst prof at queens college, will expect you to know everything before his class, does not teach and does not care to teach, reads everything from a textbook without knowing a single thing
Every decent review you will see on here is faked. Cannot emphasize how difficult this professor made my life. I am just telling you take anyone else please. And he doesn't turn a D into an F. He keeps the grade that way because he is trying to gatekeep computer science.
he is there to hurt you not help you. avoid at all costs
Worst professor ever. This guy is everything a professor shouldn't be. I am not sure why chooses to teach. Please avoid at any cost
He is faking his reviews. He makes everyone's life difficult. Avoid at all cost. Take literally any other professor in the world.
if misery was a person, it would be kent boklan.
Don't do it! wait a semester if Obrenic is full.
Take Kent Boklan if you want to pass 320 with minimal effort. He is the best option for this class. I got an A+ and only showed up for one lecture the entire semester. Thank you Dr. Boklan!
Boklan's course is very old-fashioned. No electronics during class. He will not respond to emails. There is no curve (73 is A). There is penalty for guessing True/False questions (2 out of 4 answers correct results in a score of zero). Treats students as kids, chastises latecomers, few partial credits, and enjoys deriding students. Very fast pace.
More than any other CS class here, this course is a test of your English/communication skills. The multiple choice questions will absolutely trip you up if you don't learn the meaning behind words, and are crafted to make wrong answers sound plausible. You are responsible for understanding all prerequisite mathematical material, i.e. little review.
He is very witty. I like his jokes. It is really a pleasant experience to be in his classroom, no phone and no computers really make me listen to his lecture every time in concentration. Go OH if you found yourself lost in the first few lectures. A great professor and deputy chair, very sad that he will be off for a few semesters.
He is getting reviews taken down and putting up fake reviews. Here is my word of advice do not take this teacher no matter what. No matter what school, no matter what class. Dont take him
Professor Boklan's class is no walk in the park, but with dedication and the right study tools like unstuck study, you can succeed. Attendance is a must, but the lectures are engaging. Take advantage of office hours for extra support.
Absolute worst professor I've ever encountered, ask anyone in cs and they'll give you endless reasons why he made their life miserable
most people giving these negative reviews didn't show up in class and ended up getting bad grades. I got an A-, just pay attention in lecture, practice by yourself and you'd be able to learn really well from this class. He's really good at teaching the materials.
Goto class get an A. Fall he is returning - fill his section, you won't regret
Good reviews are fake. Please stay away from this professor. Take another peofessor or this class equivalent in other college and transfer credit. I was sick and he told me that I have to take exam no matter what. I couldn't study and failed. See other reviews and stay away.
Professor Boklan is someone who really cares. He may come off stern, but thats because he wants the best from you. I took cryptography class as a challenge in my last year. Ill never forget the words that professor left us with..."you need to RISE to the challenges of life, dont back away." Our lectures were very fun and engaging.
No matter the time put, you'll most likely fail. If you want stats, the highest Avg of a Sem was 1.89 and the lowest was 0.76. The class is entertaining and he teaches well, but his problem set is extremely difficult as are the exams, with little to no credit for any work shown. You'll be happy getting higher than 25% on a problem set. Wait a Sem.
This CS elective of Cryptography is treated like a masters level course for just 3 credits. Anyways he tells us to drop due to the workload and he says people before have taken time off their jobs just to work on the group project at the end.
Don't take even if you're thinking that "this is the semester I put my mind to it" cause even then, you'll fail. Boklan is smart, but he isn't a good professor. He lets you know that this is the most challenging class in all of QC but fails to tell you that he is the reason its hard, not the course topics. Only 1 person ever got an A+ in this class
This professor follows a flawed philosophy where high failure rates equals "rigor." Instead of teaching effectively, he seems to actively gatekeep success, believing that if most students pass, he's too easy. In reality, the high fail rate reflects his poor instruction, not student effort. Avoid if you want a fair chance.
"There are no bad students, only bad teachers" - Mr. Miyagi
This class tests your work ethic. Exams are heavily curved (40 pass, ~60 B, ~73 A) with generous partial credit, but your entire grade is 3 exams. Many test questions come directly from class or homework, often verbatim. You must practice. Expect ~6 hrs/week. Not impossible, but real work is required.
Be wary of the glowing reviews; they don't reflect the reality of this class. The teaching was poor and the syllabus was ignored. My experience was the polar opposite of the high ratings here.
Theory of Computation is a challenging subject, and the course structure did not make the material easier to grasp. The teaching style was not a good fit for me, and despite completing the homework, studying extensively, and attending office hours, I struggled to succeed. Avoid, he fully lives up to the reputation people warn about.
Napoleon comp. who makes the material much more difficult than it should be. Best ways to explain the lectures is a subscription, where you have to attend office hours to get the rest of the “product”. Because he quite literally tries to force you to attend office hours and refuses to elaborate on some of the material
