He takes role in class, gives extra points for assignments he forgets about. Has 10 quizzes from the book. Test are applied knowlegde and pretty hard. Lectures are pretty entertaining but long. Overall average teacher.
This guy is alot of fun. His lectures are easy to listen to. He usually gives a quiz every Friday that is not very difficult, but they are only 10 questions so if you miss a few your screwed. I think he drops 2 or 3 of your lowest quiz grades. His tests are moderately difficult, but I didnt have much trouble making an A.
Don't take this class for an easy A. Filbel takes what should be an easy intro class and makes it a course in jumping through hoops. He barely lectures any from the book you are required to buy and lectures instead from his own notes. Filbel is completely unorganized and his constant rambling gets the class behind. Would NOT recommend.
He's a very funny guy most of the time. Sometimes he gets off track on lectures. Our first exam was a week or two behind. You need to read before the quizzes and tests but he drops the 3 lowest quizzes and gives a good bit of bonus. Pretty easy!
He creates tests based on his perspective of what the author of the textbook meant. So you could have a total understanding of the reading material and than he will just confuse the heck out of you. I won't take him again. I'm so glad I took other CMST classes before taking this intro course!! Otherwise I would of changed majors!
He likes to hear himself talk. He encourages participation, but when students express an idea or argument, he condescends to them and what they have to say, then he turns around and explains their idea back to the class as his own. Easy, but don't expect to learn anything. Might as well sit in the back and use the class as your afternoon nap time.
This guy likes to hear himself talk. Easy A class though. All you have to do is show up ro class to get participation bc that is where most of the points come from.
An A in his class is achievable. You HAVE TO go to class. He gives a lot of participation credit that totals up to over 100 points and any extra points is carried over to give extra credit. He really is a nice guy, he uses his personal stories a lot, but be thankful b/c it helps you learn the material. Tests are hard so paying attention is key. A+
Filbel is in the right department; he likes to talk. A lot. Thing is, he usually just rambles on, hardly teaching anything. He's a practical joker, almost to an annoying point, and can be very immature, insulting, and unprofessional towards his students. I feel like I learned very little from him, if anything at all.
Loves to hear himself talk. Funny guy and an easy class. Attendance is not mandatory but just about all the points are in class assignments. I'd show up and play on my phone til he gave out an assignment. No use in paying attention. Easy 5-question quiz every Friday or Monday. Just glance over the chapter and you're good. Would take him again.
This guy is not a great professor. He gives you a quiz every Friday or Monday on material he hasn't discussed in class yet... He is super condescending and is pompous. I honestly wish I would have dropped the class. 50% of your grade is based on the last 2 weeks of class...
He teaches absolutely nothing. He goes on these class-long tangents and that's it. The ONLY reason to go to class is he gives a 5 question quiz every Monday or Friday and you do middle school level worksheets in class for 10 points. DO THESE! Easy grade boosters. Bad part is that 500 of your 1000 points are given in the final two weeks of class.
Extremely tough class. i missed out on a B because of laziness. It's so hard to attend the classes because they are so boring. He's a nice guy though and very approachable and he gave like 60 points in bonus but the tests were REALLY hard. If you have to take it like i did i recommend dedicating lots of study time to it.
Class attendance is not mandatory, however he gives so many bonus opportunities that you should go. I missed out on an A soley from laziness. Not a hard class..three tests and about 10 in class quizzes. Filbel is very funny, weird, and helpful
Paying attention and taking notes in class is important; however, when it comes test time make sure you know the book just as well as the notes... If not better. He quizes you on the readings every week so make sure you keep studying the terms.
Filbel is a great teacher. He's super funny and makes the class fun. With any class, you need to attend because he does give quizzes but he tells you in advance when they are and what they're on. Quizzes are super easy 5 questions. Midterm was easy if you actually study and read each question carefully. One final. One project. Love him!
Great guy, funny lectures. No need to pay attention in class, just show up.
I like Fibel, he is a great guy and a good professor. His test are somewhat hard because he is a very detailed tester. But overall I enjoyed the challenges he presents.
Awesome teacher. A little weird but he knows what he's talking about. He's there for help if you need him and will explain anything very thoroughly if you just ask. If you go to class and study for the tests you'll make an A especially because he has a Clapton of class assignments. He keeps things interesting and was a great teacher.
Participation is mandatory because in class quizzes and assignments are added to count up points to your grade. No makeups and very hard to contact through email. Overall very interesting class, he keeps you interested with activities to explain the material better!
He is very nice but the class is really boring to say the least. The worst part is he gives random quizzes that actually do weigh heavy on your grade if you don't show up. The final and the mid term are the only two major tests we had in the course but don't get excited half of the questions on the tests will confuse you and are not in the book
You have to read for quizzes. Few exams are given. However, the exams are pretty tough so take good notes.
Liked him at the beginning of the year, entertaining guy. Gotta go class because there are assignments everyday & quizzes on the chapters. More than 50% of grade comes in the last two weeks of the semester, including a group project/presentation. By the end of year I disliked him due to the fact that he can't accept anyone's ideas but his own.
If you want a group communications class that is basically the teacher only talking about himself take him. Takes attendance every class. For a group communications class, terrible. You can tell he loves himself. Would rather listen to nails on a chalkboard then him.
Go every day. He gives freebie 10 points randomly, that add up to the final points. His quizzes aren't necesarily "random" as other people on here suggested. He puts the dates on moodle and emails you before hand. Tests are usually text based so you do have to read a lot. I went everyday and got an easy A from attendance.
Kent Filbel was very hard to understand. He's makes a lot of personal jokes that are hard to understand. The class is lecture style and every once in awhile we would have exercises. The hardest thing about this class was differentiating what was to be taken seriously or was just a joke in lecture. The class is passable thanks to passing the quizzes
I LOVE THIS MAN! He was funny and relatable and kept every lecture lively and interesting. I cannot say enough good things about him. He gives quizzes on ever chapter but just read the book and you'll pass. Each test was 12-15 questions that were made clear by the study guide he gives to you before the test. take him take him take him
He's not the best teacher, but he's not bad. Read and outline before classes to do well on quizzes. The quizzes aren't bad. You have a midterm, final, paper, and group presentation. They're all pretty easy. His classes aren't that useful, but you do grade-school leveled worksheets for easy points. I would take him for an easy A.
This guy is so funny, and really gives his all for every lecture. He always gives personal stories in his lectures that make you feel like you know him as a person, and the class is an easy A. Just show up and listen to the lectures... It's not a mentally challenging class, but you should read the chapter before weekly quizzes.
Half of the course credit came from the last 2 weeks of the semester (final presentation, final paper, and an actual final). Lecture heavy, goes off on rants but you need to take notes because it shows up on exams. Seemed to be talking down to students most of the time. Not as easy as an A as you think, grading seemed subjective.
Not an easy A as people misled me to believe!! He's very narcissistic who loves to talk on and on. His grading of the final group presentation is ridiculous and unfair. The class is easy but he makes it so much harder than it needs to be. There's quizzes every week that you HAVE to read the textbook for.
1. Show up to class 2. Do not get/read the book 3. Test/Quizzes are word for word on Quizlet 4. Tests are only 12 questions max 5. Literally the only "A" I have ever received in a course at LSU 6. Don't even need to look up from your computer in class 7. I actually enjoy listening to what he has to say sometimes 8. Wu-Tang Forever!
Loved to listen to himself talk. LOTS of in class group assignments. Had to read the entire chapter before each weekly quiz. Goes off on tangents that rarely related to things in the course material nor what was on the exam, so the midterm/final were tricky. Rarely answers emails. Took this class for required credit and I wouldn't take him again.
Lectures were very inconsistent, went off topic easily and frequently. Pretty funny but boring class overall. Tests are extremely easy, just read the chapters. Usually 12 questions per test, including the final. Takes attendance but if you don't go all the time it shouldn't affect your grade too much.
He is just the perfect example of a prof who like to philosophize about the business world without having any success or experience outside of academia. Not an individual who I would like to deal with if I was not forced to.
Filbel is funny and does his best to be entertaining - at times too much so. Have to read the chapter before you learn it in class for the quiz. Only fault is he has everything as a zero in the grade book until you do the assignment/test, so you wont truly know your grade until the end of the semester. Grading this way just doesnt make sense.
He gets off topic alot of the time. Attendance is not mandatory but makes you sign in at beginning of every class. Has chapter quizzes every friday, just read the chapter and you will be fine. A ton of worksheets he grades on so if you miss one or two it wont kill your grade.
Attendance is mandatory, it will kill your grade if you don't go. He gets off topic and anything he says will probably not be on the exam. Read the text through and through and you'll be fine. The class is simply annoying.
Pretty easy, you have to go to class. You will get a good grade on the tests as long as you fill out the exam study guides that he posts on moodle. I would fill these out & not even read the chapters. This class is literally so easy because all you do is study an outline and listen to him get off topic. as long as you put in effort, youll get an A+
He is definitely a character, unfortunately, he loves going off-topic and a lot of the stuff covered doesnt help for the quizzes/tests. All the work is super easy, but there's a lot. 9 quizzes (5 questions each), and 5 exams that are 12 questions each. Lots of stupid little in-class things are done that count for 10-20 points each. Easy A though
He's a great guy, test and quizzes are really simple. Attendance at the start of class though, put in the work an you will get the grade.
This class wasn't difficult, but it definitely was not an easy A. Dr. Filbel mostly just rambles during his lectures. Normally I'd be okay with this, but he gives these extremely trivial pop quizzes that are almost impossible to score perfect on. Aside from those killing my grade, he changed up the class' syllabus and grading scale about halfway.
This was his first year teaching CMST 2061. From what he would say, "it was a duzzy." This guy is kind of like Sauley if you have taken him. He is funny but knows the material throughout. I learned a lot from this class that I will ACTUALLY USE in life. 100% take Filbel. You might think he is nuts because he is! That is what makes him unique!
Especially during the first few weeks of the class, everything you learn is pretty simple and common knowledge. That's at the expense of possibly being interesting, but the Filbel cares and wants everyone to do well. He tells jokes throughout (sometimes vulgar if you care) but go to class, random assignments pop up and can't be redone.
Go to class! You will not pass if you don't. I loved this guy. Honestly my favorite, he was so so funny and you don't really have to listen to anything he says in class to pass. READ THE TEXTBOOK AND THE CHAPTERS HE WILL TEST ON AND TAKE NOTES! Do this and study for these little quizzes from the textbook and NOT from what he says in class
In his lectures he basically just rambles and goes on tangents. Additionally, he speaks about politics way too much. So, if you want to pass the quizzes expect to read the textbook. Also, he NEVER responds to emails. Additionally, most of the course grade comes from three things: midterm, group project, and final. All of which are graded very hard.
This class wasn't difficult, but it definitely was not an easy A. Dr. Filbel mostly just rambles during his lectures. Which would have been okay, but he gives pop quizzes from the textbook which doesnt correspond with what he teaches.
His classes aren't that useful, but you do grade-school leveled worksheets for easy points. His midterm and final are really hard and the lectures dont really prepare you for it. His lectures are useless, the textbook is where he pulls all the questions from.
Attendance is mandatory, it will kill your grade if you don't go. He gets off topic and anything he says will probably not be on the exam. I wanted to skip this class so much but couldn't because of attendance and group projects. So to pass quizzes just read the text through and through and you'll be fine. It's not worth listening to his rambling.
He overall is not a bad teacher. Yet he never answers emails so beware of that. He isn't accommodating either. You can get an A in this class as long as you put in effort.
He was great! His assignments are not that difficult and he gives great feedback. The textbook is an easy read as well.
Professor Filbel is a great professor. He cares about his students and answers emails. I would highly recommend this class. He rocks!
Professor Filbel is a really good professor and has much knowledge in the communication field as he's taught it for a very long time. His classes are very lecture heavy, but he makes it interesting with his corky personality. Quizzes are bi-weekly but pretty easy! I highly recommend taking Filbel if considering!
I really enjoyed his class! He made taking a 8:30am class worth it. He cares about his students and is funny. He says some life changing advice. There are weekly quizzes but only are 5 Qs based on the txtbook. Read the book and get an A. There is a group project at the end of the semester. Very simple tho. Also free easy 10-15 points a class too!
Professor Filbel is who everyone should strive to be. He is so incredibly intelligent and hilarious, his lectures never have a dull moment. Quizzes and tests are simple if you review your notes and Filbel gives very interesting assignments in class. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
If you have a different professor choice for this class choose the other professor. He isnt very understandable and makes this class way harder than it should be. He gets very off topic and says nothing useful for test or quizzes.
This class is a moderately easy A if you just read the chapters and go to class. Quizzes and exams are just over the chapters so give an hour each week to take notes over the chapter and you'll be good. Filbels lectures are entertaining and light, honestly an enjoyable class to attend.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He WILL help you get a good grade, just listen to what he has to say. There's work almost every day, but it's light work and he makes you think. His lectures are very good and enjoyable. Only down side: Tests and quizzes. Quizzes are moderately easy, but the tests have a couple reaallly specific questions.
Monday quizzes on the textbook and hard exams.
Something in his lectures may be on quiz/exam, but most of it is from the text. Filbel is really great, he works well with his students, is lenient, funny, and an all-around great professor. You make 10x better grades for showing up bc of the easyA in-person assignments and attendance. He's always open for office hours and accessible through email.
Very friendly, entertaining, and great at showing why certain concepts are important in daily and professional life.
To pass this class you dont really need to pay attention to anything he says in class, he goes on abount random things but hes caring and was a good teacher. Attendance is mandatory which sucks because lectures literally have nothing to do with the material. If you read the textbook and go to class youll be fine!
The way this course is laid out is basically just annoying. 5 question quizzes usually once a week, it's super easy material but if you get one question wrong your grade drops. There's an in class assignment almost every day for points so you can never skip class. The "exams" are just 12- 16 question quizzes. Overall it was easy but really annoying
He makes the material extremely engaging, but the quizzes and tests are so short. You can't miss one question without your grade dropping significantly. You also really can't miss class because he does in-class assignments pretty much every day that make up a significant part of your grade.
Professor Filbel is a great professor with an extremely easy class Unfortunately you have to attend class everyday, but by doing so and reading the textbook there's no way you won't get an A, and the class material itself is extremely easy
The quizzes aren't that bad; you have to read the book. Attendance is mandatory. His tests are somewhat hard. The final project was fun though where you make a game. However, I would say take his class because he teaches you so much about communication skills that you won't get anywhere else.
filbel was a fun professor. He's kinda a strange dude but keeps you intrigued. youll do fine on the quizzes if you actually read the book. he doesnt really go over any of the info in class, he kinda j rambles. But if you put the effort in its an easy A. the group project was fun and the tests are just based on the quizzes.
Weekly 3 minute multiple-choice chapter quizzes. Kinda difficult so you MUST read and study the chapter before doing them. He expects you do check your email a lot to see the assignments. Work is not hard, interesting material, good lectures.
This class would have been so easy if he did not give out chapter quizzes every week. The chapter quizzes are not easy. It is a boring class. He is a nice guy though, but sometimes does not make it easy on his students. His Moodle is also set from back in 2017 so it was a guessing game on what was all due.
This is all you need to know. Very easy if you're mature and can read 8 paragraphs a week for the weekly quizzes. Go to class every day, like you would a job, and get a good grade. All of the assignments you do in class are participation points! I don't understand how people fail this class. His grading scale is 1000 total points, 47 bonus points.
Attendance is important because there is a lot of random in class assignments but they are super easy and you dont have to speak in front of the class. He has weekly quizzes and the tests are somewhere around 12-16 questions.Attend class and listen to the lectures or read a little bit of the book the quizzes and tests are fine.
Read the chapters he assigns there are quizzes every week based on the reading. Quizzes are hard but manageable if you read. The group project was fun, but he was a hard grader when it came to presenting. Attendance was mandatory and he graded heavily. Fun guy but doesn't explain material of the course itself, just rambles about real-life examples.
The only difficult part about the classes is the readings. You will read the book cover to cover. No PowerPoints given, no exam prep, no outlines. If you like to read, you should be okay. He offsets it with light grading on the 30 papers you'll turn in over the semester.
easy to contact and available outside of class time to discuss your concerns. his teaching style is horrendous and selfish. The entire class time is just him talking about his childhood and life experiences without ever opening the class up for discussion. Class attendance is required yet truly will not effect info retention. Felt like elementary
Literally the worst professor I have had. Is a communications professor, but fails to properly go by his own syllabus and communicated that at the END of the semester after everyone had already figured it out. Likes to ramble about nothing during a mandatory attendance class and expects you to read the book on your own time.
Filbel was such a fun professor. He made class very interesting and exams were only 12 questions- so easy. There's a big amount of in-class graded assignments and quizzes, but they are very easy points and not stressful at all. Couldn't recommend him more, shares a lot about himself and emails us reminders about quizzes/exams ahead of time.
He is a really likeable guy but when further listening to what he actually says you realize how attention hungry he really is. He talks about his life and nothing really about what will be on the test. Will tell you that what he lectures is the most important thing you will learn in college. Tests were difficult but the class assignments are easy.
Worst professor I have ever had. Lectures were all about his childhood memories and he hardly taught the actual material. He doesn't respond to emails, laughed in my face when I brought up a concern in class, and he changes the syllabus without any warning. Not worth whatever money is being paid for the class.
I dont think Filbel is genuinely all that bad, he just likes to hear himself talk. Dont skip because hes always doing participation grades. The quizzes arent terrible if you just find quizlets. Just be aware hes going to talk and talk and talk
He teaches nothing that's actually on the exam. The textbook is the only way to learn in the class. Class is to hand in worksheets that teach you nothing you need to know. Only pro is there is extra credit. 2 exams are 200 points a piece too, so if you fail one you are screwed. Counted off points since I forgot one word on a worksheet.
Kent is the WORST. Talks alot about nothing important. Has weekly quizzes based on textbook readings. Puts in plenty of easy hw grades but hw is on paper and needs to be turned in in-person. Lectures are a complete waste of time rarely any exam material is discussed. He expects alot out of students for a cmst prerec course. Take someone else please
He was an okay professor. Loved to hear himself talk, especially about his personal life, and would make that 90% of his lectures. If you read the textbook and take notes when he actually gives content related to the class you should be fine. One quiz a week, two tests, and a group project. Grades weird for the project and nit picked certain things
The guy was completely full of himself and would mainly just talk about himself every lecture.
As a student in my third year as a finance major, this was the hardest class I've taken. This professor deserves to be fired. He's so full of himself and never gives any advice on how to pass the class. I was taking this class for it to be an easy elective, and I was mistaken. If you take this class, you will regret it.
Not your typical communications course. He is funny but very tough class for a communications course
The class itself wasn't terrible, but the professor always discussed his personal life during lectures, which had no relevance to the exam material. His lectures didn't contribute much to understanding the course. He always gave quizzes and classwork at the beginning of class, so if you miss it, you'll lose points. the exams were fairly easy.
he talk too much and quizzes were lowkey hard cus i did try to study.
Class is absolutely mandatory as a big chunk of your grade comes from in class activities. If you miss more than 3 classes you will not get an A. Also rambles about himself the whole class.
Father Filbel (self-proclaimed title) is a charachter. His lectures may not be about the material but you'll get more out of the class than you would a boring professor going over the textbook. Go to class, read the chpaters for the quizzes, hour tops and you will be fine. Got a 100 on the exam, studied the morning of...
He was okay. If anything, its just a mildly annoying class to take.
Attendance is very mandatory, he's very full of himself and talks alot. He takes a while to read and respond to emails so just ask him in class. But if you can take a different teacher I highly recommend it, his course is just so work heavy for a couple communication credits.
Ridiculously hard for a communications class. Only one person got an A. The midterm was a killer. Also, he takes points off for no good reason, like random commas. The course itself is interesting but he goes off on tangents. Textbook is open source which was good. If he gave more As, I'd say grin and bear it, but avoid him if you can.
Class attendance is mandatory and he talks about himself a lot without making it relevant to the class. Will never answer your emails so dont even bother, just ask him in class. Quiz every week based on textbook readings. Makes the class unnecessarily hard for a simple communications course. Do not take him if you don't have to.
All he did all semester was talk about himself and try to compare his life to the textbook. IF YOU DONT READ THE TEXT BOOK, YOU WILL NOT PASS because he doesn't talk about it AT ALL during the semester. Weekly quizzes and daily participation assignments. Don't even think about emailing him because he will literally never respond.
