His class was a lot of work...but I learned a lot. You really have to put in the work. Covers a lot of material...it is managable if you keep up and go to class.
Germany is the worst professor I have had at USC. His lectures are really hard to follow and boring. He is very monotone and goes off on all kinds of different tangents. His media clips are good. His exams have good essays but the shorts answers are stupid and ask about worthless facts and dates in that section. Avoid taking him if you can.
Great professor! Knows the material. Lots of out of class reading. If you attend class you won't have that hard of a time studying for exams. Very nice guy.
Kent Germany is the best teacher I have had at USC. I took both American History and Civil Rights Movement survey with him. Wonderful teacher that knows his stuff, and used fun teaching techniques such as films, music, and personal experiences to increase your interest. His classes arent TOO easy, but what good class is? Handsome fella too. A++++++
Professor Germany was one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. The project for the class was a bit tough but if you just go to him he is always willing to help out and guide you. I would definitely recommend him for any History Majors out there. Great guy
Professor Germany is willing to help you but he doesn't really help at all. His class is really hard to follow and going to class is not beneficial at all. Nearly impossible to get an A...
Absolutely fascinating class. Really enjoyed the lectures and film clips. I learned so much about the civil rights movement that I had never known. Look forward to taking another class with him.
His class is not conventional, which might bother those who aren't interested/are lazy; however, he has so much valuable information to give his students. He assigns a lot of papers, but they contribute significantly to the overarching themes in the course. Dr. Germany's class was thought provoking, and overall a thoroughly gratifying experience.
Professor Germany is an excellent teacher. He makes it clear what he wants and isn't afraid to make strong criticisms for improvement. If you desire to improve and learn take his history 300 class. The most difficult part of the class is the final project but as long as youdo your best and listen to his advice, you can do well and suceed.
Dr. Germany is an exceptional history professor in Modern American History because he develops lectures around ideas and movements in the period. Dr. Germany challenges students to think about questions of Who is an American? and Was Vietnam a good war? to engage students in this time of movement in the American landscape.
Excellent Professor!! Class breakdown is 40% Test 1&2, 20% 5-7pg paper, 30% Final, and 10% attendance and reading responses. This is a must take class if you are FROM or LIVE in the South! Dr. Germany is an amazing resource with lots of information. Class is fun and interesting! Must come to class!
Dr. Germany is a very knowledgeable and intelligent professor. He's also pretty funny at times. However, I am an A student and have had trouble on his exams. His essays and final paper are easy enough if you know how to defend a thesis. However, his short answer sections on exams are very specific and hard to prepare for. Overall, good professor
Germany is really smart and has a lot of opinions about history that are valuable. Attendance isn't mandatory and you only use your book in section. He puts his notes on blackboard for you to access. His research paper isn't hard as long as you know how to make an argument and his exams are mainly essay.
I love Dr. Germany. I hate history and have never done well in it but I have an A in the class. He loves what he's teaching which makes listening in lecture easy and enjoyable. Quizzes in discussion are from the book, he gives extra credit for lecture attendance. Exams are essay but he gives you topics beforehand. I would definitely take him again!
Lectures are awesome. He's an interesting guy and doesn't just drone on. Not the easiest grader on essays, he really wants to see something spectacular, so even the best typically get in the low A range on papers. He's very vague on assignments as well, which is stressful, but they never wind up being too difficult, really.
Awesome lectures, really interesting material. I had a great TA so that helped, textbook reading required, attendance not mandatory but you need to come to class to pass the exams. I'd recommend Germany, he's full of fascinating facts and references.
Best teacher I've taken at USC thus far. He is interested in this topic and he teaches it very well. The tests are only difficult if you don't read the assigned readings. I'm anticipating an A/B+ in the class. He will work with you outside of class and his lectures are very easy to follow. If you're interested in history at all TAKE HIM.
TAKE HIM. I absolutely hate history, but he made it interesting because of all the stories and he's so passionate about it. Attendance not required, but you should go to do well on the tests. The tests have an essay thats 80% and he gives you the topics in class so you can prepare and then 10 multiple questions worth 20%
Dr. Germany is absolutely wonderful. He is incredibly understanding, and he is willing to help you out in any way he can. His lectures are usually pretty interesting, and his exams are never too hard. Go to class, laugh at his jokes (because they're usually pretty cheesy), and get your A.
Great professor! Really loves the subject and keeps you interested. Discussion groups are kinda lame but lectures are great.
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. so so so intelligent and makes class fun and easy. Shows tons of interesting video clips & is really passionate about what he is teaching. Lecture is not mandatory but many times he will offer bonus points for those who attend. I never loved history is high school but Doctor Germany made me love it. He is truly amazing
One of the only good lectures I've taken at USC. Shows great clips and makes the interesting material. He loves what he does and it shows. There are quizzes on the reading every discussion session and lectures have extra credit quizzes randomly. Not too difficult and a good teacher for a gen ed
He is really fun and nice but this class is NOT as easy as everyone implies. The lectures are interesting but hard to follow because he is so sporadic. Attendance isn't mandatory but GO TO EVERY CLASS because he gives random extra credit and trust me you will need it. Your grade is entirely dependent on how lenient your TA is.
Kent is the man. He is so funny and makes lectures so interesting. The discussion is where your grade solely comes from. The quizzes are easy and based off the readings so make sure you do read. My TA graded harshly on our essays so it I wouldn't consider it an "easy A" but the class is awesome! ATTEND CLASs you get extra points
Lectures are semi-interesting and he has a good sense of humor. If you go to class you get bonus points, but the greats come from the discussion section. There are weekly quizzes from the readings and a research paper. Midterm and final are timed essays. Overall was a good history class for someone who hates history normally.
Dr. Germany is great during lectures. Speaks very clearly and is open to feedback but wont force it upon anyone. Is funny and outgoing which makes it easier to sit through lectures. Grade really depends on who your TA is but Dr. Germany prepares you well for the material you need to know in your discussion classes. Great instructor.
I really really loved professor Germany. I'd have to say he's been my favorite professor at USC so far. He's not the easiest professor and you need to work for your grade but he is such an interesting speaker and really made the class entertaining. He has an admirable sense or humor and a clear passion for history. I highly recommend him!
For an intro history class grading is way to hard. TAs grade the majority of the work so if you get a hard grader you are in trouble. Lectures are worthless for the test and quizzes. For test you are giver the essay questions in advance and the 10-20 matching questions are very random and hard to prepare for. Overall I wouldn't take him again.
The class I took had both a lecture and discussion section. For each discussion class, you were required to do several readings and take a quiz on them. He only gives a mid-term and a final, both of which have large essay portions. There is also a term paper due at the end of the semester. His lectures are very interesting and fly by though.
Prof. Germany is a very knowledgable teacher and if you like history, take his classes! He is very helpful if you ask and has a good sense of humor that comes through in lectures and grading. While the class is not super easy, you learn a lot and have something more than an A to show for it. Take him if you get the chance!
I've taken several of Professor Germany's classes and loved every one. He has a good sense of humor and does an excellent job of making the material interesting to students during lecture. He has great taste in the readings/books he assigns; they are interesting and informative yet not too dense. One of the best professors I've had at USC.
Professor Germany is an average history teacher. Attendance is not mandatory in lectures but you wont do well on the recitation quizzes if you don't go. His class consists of lots of reading each week, weekly quizzes, a midterm and final, and a major writing assignment. Like I said, pretty average history professor.
Good amount of work to do for discussion sections, there is a quiz on the material every week (don't need to study if paid attention during lecture). Tests are tough, but there is only a mid-term and a final. Big research paper due a few weeks after mid-term and Kent is a stickler on plagiarism - enough to make you cite every sentence.
Honestly one of my favorite class this semester. His lectures were really interesting and relevant.
Interesting lectures, tests can be very confusing. Study hard for them.
Kent's the man. Although he's the main teacher, the discussion portion is also where 40% of your grade comes from so make sure you don't miss them! Advice: GO TO LECTURE! I went to every lecture and expect an A while my roommate missed about 8-10 lectures and is struggling to get up to a C. His lectures aren't bad at all and he is very interesting.
never went to lecture and still did well in the class. two exams and a research paper that he gives you a ton of helpful information on. discussion section once a week with a quiz every time (lowest two quiz grades are dropped). as long as you skim the required reading, you'll do well on the quizzes. the exams aren't that bad.
A very solid teacher. he is funny, interested in his students, and he also makes his lectures very relevant and interesting
Germany is a super nice professor and funny guy. There are quizzes each week about required reading on the syllabus and lecture material but these can be kind of hard (you can really only pass the quizzes if you actually do the reading). Lectures are super random and you don't actually go in depth about historical events.
his lectures are so interesting and he's super funny. there's only two exams and one paper, plus quizzes every week for discussion, but if you put in adequate time for the readings and prepare for the exams, you'll be fine
I've taken three classes with Dr. Germany. He is the most helpful professor in the History department. He will help you find sources/paper topics, will make time to meet with you individually and he genuinely wants you to do well. Find something in history that you enjoy and he will steer you in the right direction.
Germany is a great lecturer. He was very funny, open to comments, and somehow found a way to make history super interesting. The discussion quizzes were not terrible, do the reading and you will do fine. As someone who was terrified of this course, I came out with an A. He was great.
Loved this class! Basically just do the work and you'll be fine, and you don't need the textbook so don't buy it. His lectures are kinda hard to follow sometimes because he moves so fast, but he's really entertaining and he posts them all online later. The class was somewhat difficult, but minimal effort will get you a B. Definitely take his class!
He gives iClicker questions during classes, so definitely do not skip free points. He is very approachable before and after class, but during was a drag. He definitely better suited for smaller classrooms. I have to admit, though, the Lyndon B. Johnson paper went a lot smoothly than I had initially anticipated.
Professor Germany was awesome! He is great at what he does and makes lectures interesting. Grading consisted of a midterm, a research paper, a final, and quizzes in a discussion.
His class is pretty easy. There are weekly quizzes in discussion section, which are based off of readings that are usually short. There is a midterm, paper, and final. As long as you go to lecture and do the reading, you will be fine.
First off, I have always HATED history (I waited until senior year to take it). Germany completely turned that around. His lectures were funny and interesting, especially during election season. He uses iClickers. Weekly quizzes in recitation weren't too difficult, but definitely do the readings. Textbook is online. REALLY enjoyed this class.
Okay so his lectures are pretty boring but he is a great teacher and person if you take advantage. He would definitely strive being in a smaller class, but overall it was an easy class. He will answer questions before and after class. Every discussion class has a quiz, so make sure you do the reading and it'll be easy.
Mr. Germany is a very cool guy and he makes the lectures somewhat interesting, but at the end of the day it is American History so it can be boring. Make sure you do the iClicker questions in class for extra credit and attend the discussion sections because they are worth more than you think. He also is very strict on technology in class.
Professor Germany is honestly one of the very best professors I have taken while at USC. Honestly if you do the readings and you pay a little attention in lecture you will pass. He loves US History so much and he's so good at it, particularly the 60's and studies on LBJ and Kennedy. He's such an awesome professor, I would 10/10 recommend him.
Lecture heavy style, but lectures are very interesting and open for discussion and questions. Knows the material extremely well. Possibly my favorite teacher that I have had so far, 3 years in to the major. Very accessible. As with a typical history course, there is a lot of reading but it is interesting and applicable.

Awesome guy. Classes are casual and conversational with some lecture. Very knowledgeable guy and keeps class interesting. Decent amount of in-class readings, however they were all very interesting and reasonable. Highly recommend prof. Germany!
Dr. Germany is incredibly knowledgeable about his subject and truly wants to share that with students. He is fair with assignments and grading and is always willing to talk with students. Even though this isn't my subject concentration in history, he kept me interested and expands how students can view and study history.
Dr. Germany is a fantastic professor who is knowledgeable, personable, and informative. He creates a great classroom experience and is fair in his grading. The is willing to work with you if you are struggling and seems to genuinely want his students to succeed.
A ton of reading but he's a nice guy and he at least makes lecture pretty interesting. Keep up with the syllabus, I missed a whole book which was on me but I would've appreciated him at least saying "Hey look a few days ahead because this book is coming up" bc for most of the semester he's said you only need to look at the upcoming class' readings.
Definitely not recommended if you have a tough semester, as there's a LOT of readings for each class and 3 books, but if you have a light semester it's pretty worth it if you're interested in the 1950s through the 1970s. Super nice guy and he makes his lectures pretty interesting, with lots of super relevant and good videos/documentaries.
I liked him as a person, but this is the most annoying history class I've ever taken. The things he talks about are very interesting, but not really testable. It's not really difficult, but annoying. He does not teach conventionally, and he would do so much better with a small class. in short, I wish it was a usual fact memorization class.
Picked him because of his good reviews, but honestly would pick another professor if I had to again. He wasn't that difficult, but his approach to teaching history is unusual and boring. One paper, lots of quizzes, one midterm, and one final. Discussion quizzes were either 20/20 or 10/20, even though I read/watched in detail anything assigned.
I wouldn't say this class was absolutely horrible, but not my favorite. Weekly quizzes that are difficult even if you study/do all readings and prepare. Midterm had a matching section & essay. You get participation points from the discussion section. Lectures are boring but you can tell he knows what he is talking about.
Probably one of the worst classes I have taken in awhile. Gives weekly sections quizzes that you can study for all you want but it does not help. Gives the most boring lectures you will ever listen to and sections make you more confused. Would not ever take him again.
The people who are saying that Germany is the bad part of this class are wrong. It COMPLETELY depends on who your section teacher is. Mine is nice but a pretty tough grader but since COVID19, Germany has been grading everything and is giving great feedback. I barely did the readings and passed all quizzes. Get a main idea of text and you'll be fine
Your grade comes from participation in section classes and quizzes. Quizzes are based off the readings and are pretty basic questions I just skimmed them and made A's on all of them. Germany is very knowledgable and if you show him you are as well he will take note of it. I got extra credit for writing good posts so take what you will from that.
Germany truly loves history and you can see it when he lectures. His class requires a ton of reading and outside work, but with barely any effort outside of the required assignments, its a decently easy course. I SUCK at history and am on track to make an A in the class. Dreaded taking history forever, but wasnt bad at all with Germany.
Would not recommend this horrid professor. He is so unorganized and unprofessional. He only cares about his research and bases our papers off his own personal knowledge. Terrible. Not an easy A.
Very difficult. Very writing intensive. Grades papers toughly.
Germany is really great at captivating his audience, lectures are amazing and very interesting. If you read the required reading for the week and pay attention to the lecture this class should be an easy class for you. Highly recommend taking Germany for your history credit.
Good man. This class was very interesting. If you read what he assigns and pay attention then you will get an easy A. His exams are 13 multiple choice based on the people you have learned about along with an essay portion that he gives you beforehand so you can work on it. I enjoyed this class and recommend him as a teacher to everyone. only 2 exam
I took the 3 weeks summer session online. Germany gives GREAT feedback and answers to questions you have regarding the modules. He definitely knows what hes teaching. The workload is not bad if you are diligent, and the content is very interesting!!! Take Germany if you can. Ive absolutely loved his class. Wish I could take it twice.
You can tell that prof. Germany really cares about what he's teaching, and his lectures are some of the best. You definitely have a lot of readings, but as long as you do them, you should be fine because weekly reading quizzes can help your grade. There are 2 exams and 1 paper, and those are graded by your TA. So hope for an easy TA.
Class is made up of video lectures, discussion posts, and two essays. Fairly easy and learned a bit. Professor Germany was nice and responded to many of the questions I posted as part of the discussion post with interesting facts and trivia.
This class has a lot of material each week. There are weekly quizzes with 5 questions each and discussion posts every two weeks. No exams. There are three long essays where you can only use sources he chooses, and the prompts are very complex. Your grade is completely dependent on which TA you are assigned, as they grade your essays and discussions
Germany is one of the nicest professors I've had in college and makes history enjoyable to learn. His TA's, however, not so much. They will literally grade your papers as if you're a grad student too and won't give you any mercy or any kind of guidance. I love him but wouldn't take him again bc of his TA's
There were weekly modules with one quiz a week and a discussion post every other week. There were three essays throughout the semester that were very long. The topics were always confusing and no matter how hard I tried I would get a bad grade on the discussions and essays. It really just depends on your TA. You just have to pay close attention.
Germany is a very good professor. Having him online/asynchronous was tough because of the lack of explanations further than the videos posted. He always responded to my emails in a timely manor and gave really good feed back on discussions and papers. The class does have a lot of work and many short quizzes, just don't be afraid to ask for help.
Very helpful professor. No textbook but he gives readings. Fun class even at 8:30 am. TA is also helpful.
Very easy A as long as you do the papers and work. He is very helpful if you have questions or need help. All the work is papers and actually pretty interesting to write about. Small class as well
Professor Germany is clear in what he wants and expects from your writing, but if you ever stagger, he is there to amend any problems you might have shown. The class is for anyone with an interest in history, specifically history of a certain time. If you know one topic well, you will do great in the class. He's by far the best prof. I've had.
I honestly never went to class. It is only based on three papers which your ta grades. And you can send the paper to your ta. Before it is due and they will give comments and feedback. Super easy class.
Dr. Germany is by far my favorite professor. I had him for HIST 300 and HIST 407. HIST 407 is an easy class and covers interesting material. There are a lot of papers, but Professor Germany is fair and provides a lot of feedback. Getting an A is very achievable, and he gives extra credit on reaction papers if he thinks the paper is outstanding.
I took this class over winter term and thought he was so funny! It is a lot of work, but he tries to make it interesting. Loved his commentary, but he is a hard grader on papers.
I had Germany for 300 and 407 and he was my best professor so far. His lectures are really interesting, and he organizes his lectures really well. I wrote about 4-5 essays throughout the semester, but they were all really interesting assignments. Gives good feedback on assignments.
A really good professor that is very knowledgeable about history. Lots of papers but they are really easy and help develop your thoughts and writings skills. Overall one of the best professors I've had. Take him
Prof. Germany is very nice, and clearly passionate about history. I have no problem with him as a person, but I wasn't a fan of his teaching style. Quizzes almost every class that are only 5 questions, but on SO much material. Heavy reading and writing- tough grader on papers. Prompts for papers are also very vague- legit like 3 words... it's hard.
Dr. Germany is an awesome guy who loves the 60's area of American history. His passion for the topic is easily spread to his students. His assignments/writing prompts are also more engaging and interesting than most other professors at the university. He cares about the student succeeding and is more than willing to help whenever he can. Take him!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Thought its gonan be easy A but NO. His discussion board graded very harsh, you need to write a lot to meet the "standard" The paper requires a lot too. just don't take the class if you want a easier class for the history requirement.
I am a senior and this is the hardest class I have ever taken. Good luck writing anything for this class, you will most likely fail the opinion based discussion posts. I failed an introduction post, how is that even possible? If you enjoy being happy avoid this guy.
So hard for no reason. Absurd amount of content to watch and read each week for a 100 level class. Don't take this.
I took his class online and he gave us double the amount of work he would usually give, but that just ended up in the class ending in half a semester. It's a lot of reading with a discussion and quiz at the end of each chapter, but those are graded kinda easily. There's also 2 huge papers that are due but they're graded easily if you put in effort.
Professor Germany made the material interesting and actually easy to understand but since it is an asynchonous course it is a lot of work. Discussion posts and papers can be graded kind of harshly, but if you put in the work you'll be fine
Dr. Germany understands history can be boring at times and does his best to make it engaging. Exams were manageable but there is a weekly discussion section that is mandatory for attendance and there is a quiz every week. Participation in discussion sections is worth 20% of final grade also, and lecture attendance is used for extra credit. Cool guy
I took History 112 with him and he's overall an above average professor. Lectures are mandatory for extra credit but his lecture outlines were confusing to follow. Additionally, the discussion classes are MANDATORY as most of your grade depends on it. There is a 20 point quiz and 15 point participation during each discussion, so don't miss those.
wasn't a huge fan of this class but its bc I took it at 830am (bad decision). as long as ur not rolling out of bed to come to the lectures you should be ok lol. he knows his stuff, very solid teacher. attendance was taken through a 'I'm here' true or false quiz on BB on lecture days and a small group on meeting days. recommend for the credit
the tests were very unclear and I felt the lectures didn't match to what the readings were. the tests and essays were worth majority of the grade so if your a bad test taker this is a difficult course
His class was all a lecture so if it was early in the morning, like mine was, it can be difficult to get through at times. He has a passion for what he teaches and is a good professor.
Great professor if you enjoy lectures. His lectures are very detailed and he will take the time to explain points clearly and thoroughly. Highly recommend this professor if you need to take a history credit.
I took his online history112 class, and his feedback on written assignments is written in doctor-level cursive, which is ineffective to me, who is trying to learn from my feedback. I also feel that he grades harshly with no clear reasoning behind it. I don't recommend him whatsoever.
He is one of the worst profs I have ever had the "pleasure" of meeting. From the start to end he is talking. And even continues after class has ended, and while everyone is moving and creating a bunch of noise does he tell important announcements. But by the time the first class is up I and many others were already talking of dropping this course.
Dr. Germany was one of the best professors I have had. He's extremely helpful and wants all of his students to do well. He helped me find all of the resources I needed for the final project and gave great feedback, but I would recommend asking for him to translate his handwriting. He's super knowledgeable and really engages with his students.
Dr. Germany is fantastic. One of the most enjoyable classes I've taken in a long time. Put in the work and you will absolutely see the fruits of your labor!
Good class and he knows what he's talking about. I'm sure he'd be better in an upper-level class with less students, but he talks the entire time with little interaction with students. The points system for grading can get a little confusing, and quizzes are more focused on details than concepts. Make sure you do the readings and you'll be fine.
Not hard, but not easy either. Show up to every class and you get extra credit. Also there are weekly quizzes, so make sure you pay attention to the lectures because you cannot use your notes and they will tank your grade if you're not careful. Tests are fairly easy as well, you just need a basic understanding. Overall, not amazing, but manageable.
Really a great professor. Long lectures, 3 tests, a few quizzes, and assignments. Difficult to get an A, but still a very interesting class. 10/10 recommend to a friend.
Highly recommend taking Professor Germany's classes. He knows all his stuff and can answer any question that could be asked. All three exams for HIST407 are in-class essays with the prompt given a week in advance, so very manageable. Grades were also returned quickly w/feedback which was nice.
Lectures are like a good podcast. You're graded on a few short "reactions," and you have three in-class essay exams. You get an outline and the prompt a week in advance. Class material is organized and helpful. Easy pop quizzes, just do the readings and Sparknotes the two novels. Good mix of social, political, and military history. Fun guy.
Pretty chill professor. Lectures are interesting.itty. Covers a ton of content and sometimes unclear what exactly is being focused on. Very fair grader. Assignments are a mix of take home essays, in class essays, and quizzes. Only negative is his handwriting is very bad, so you may need to sit with him at office hours to review his feedback.
