Kirkby loves his job. And though I'm not big into rocks, he managed to enchant me.
Professor Kirkby is great. Even though he is teaching a 1001 class to about two hundred students, he is very enthusiastic about teaching. I am a lib arts major and he really got me excited about rocks.
one of the easiest classes but also most enjoyable
TAKE HIS CLASS! You won't regret it! He is by far one of the most caring profs I've had!!
Hands down one of the best professors the university has. Do yourself a favor and take one of his classes, even if you have no interest in geology.
Very caring, thoughtful, and fun professor. Class is easy. Memorization is the key. He will give you any help you need to be successful. Great guy. Thanks Prof Kirkby.
very enthusiastic
I slacked off a bit and got a B+, but Prof. Kirkby might be the best professor at the U of M. Is unbelievably excited about his subject matter and passes that excitement on to the class. AND he's always there to help when you need it!
Professor Kirkby was extremely enthusiastic about teaching. You can tell he knows a lot about what he's teaching and has an overall love for it. I actually was excited to go to his class 3 times a week over the lunch period!!
Kirkby is great. He has a passion for teaching students that many profs at the U lack. Makes the material interesting.
good guy tries to make class fun, and no test only quizzes. very good prof.
He is great! He's hilarious and always makes class fun. He's so easy to understand!!
Good teacher --- really enthusiastic about what he teaches and is willing to help you if you ask. Best way to get the physical science with lab off your back at the U!
Prof. Kirby is one the most excited middle age men I have ever seen. His teaching style is fun and he brings excitement to the class with jokes that have to caught with a quick wit. Brings all subject matter to the real life. I didn't think geology could be fun...ever...but it was!
very helpful and works around your schedule!!
greatest professor here, he's so nice and happy to teach geology and is always there to help you. i easily got an A
Lectures are interesting. He throws away your two worst quizes. He is very helpful and understanding. As long as you go to class and read through the notes, the quizes are easy. Makes geology fun.
Absolutely great. reccommend highly. he has that rare ability to take a joke that would sound lame coming from anyone else and make it hilarious. he also likes to show the connections between geology and history/literature/etc and other "more intersesting" subjects.
Kent is one of the best profs. I have had at the Univ. I never knew how interesting Geology was.
He was hella tight.
Professor Kirkby is a very intelligent, humorous, and good-natured person. He always makes lectures fascinating. The class is not difficult because it's easy to get absorbed in the content and really learn. Grade based only on quizzes, and final is also only worth one quiz. Kirkby is really cool.
Best professor I have had at the U of M!! Classes were interesting and fun.
Prof. Kirkby rocked! I wasn't that interested in geology when I signed up but he definitely made the class worthwhile. He seemed really enthused with what he was teaching and knew his subject well. If you take geology, make sure you take it with him!!
I had Professor Kirkby a while ago, and everything I learned in that lecture stuck. I was never interested in Geology before him, and after him, I took 3 more classes that had something to do with geological formations of some sort. He kicks ass!
I had him for a substitute one day, he's not my normal teacher. He is the most fascinating professor- no matter how uninterested you are in the subject, he'll have you hooked. I hate science and now i just absolutely love geology and oceanography because of ONE class with him.

This guy was great! I hated the idea of taking this class but his enthusiasm for the subject was contagious and make a dry topic fascinating. I highly recommend him to anyone. He was quirky and funny. He was a great teacher and cared about his students! This guys gets an A+!
Nice guy, tests are harder than you think. Lab is kinda boring. Expect a B in this class.
This guy is hilarious! Very organized, thoughtful, and helpful. Provides half notes and study guides which makes life so much better! Class is always enjoyable and he does a good job making every day a little different. I'd definitely a class from him again!
Best professor I've ever had. Funny, interesting, and just generally a cool guy.
great prof! made things simple and would throw in random facts here and there that had nothing to do with geology (we learned why dalmations are associated with fire trucks).
Kent is such a great teacher!! He does everything in his power to get you to do as well as you want. If you have him go to his reviews, they help alot. TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER!
Kent is an amazing teacher with a passion for Geology. He is enthusiastic and very helpful with any questions you have. His tests are harder than what you think...he wants you to understand the materiel not memorize a bunch of useless facts. He will make you think. Great teacher, highly recommend him for any class.
I'm taking Geology pass fail, but I actually really enjoy this class...why?? B/C Kent is the best teacher I have had at the University so far. He is SO Funny, Interesting, Actually has a Personality, Relates to Real-Life!! I wish the U would evaluate him, and give him a raise!! You can tell he takes his job seriously!!
Kirkby is the best prof ever!! I go to the class just to listen to him talk!! He always his great stories and sidenotes about the material we are learning in class. Definately take a class with this professor!
If you want an awesome class to take, choose this guy!!!
AWESOME professor. He is very entertaining and strives to relate the material into real life situation. He has review sessions before every quiz and you can ask him anything and he will explain in full detail of what he is going to ask on the quiz. Lectures were always very entertaining.
AMAZING! He almost got a standing ovation on the last lecture. He makes everything worth your time. I never felt like I was wasting a minute. He is the best ever. take any clas with him, you will not regret it!
Even though I found this class very easy I still learned a lot about geology. His teach style is great as is his humor. I highly recommend taking a course with kirkby
EASY!!!!!! If you dont get an A in this class, then shame on you! He is very easy going and accessible. No tests in class, just quizes. Go to his review sessions the day before and he practically gives the answers away! Made a boring subject very fun - he focused more on dinos than rocks, which was good!! TAKE HIM!
Best teacher ever! He kept me interested in the subject and I don't even like sciene stuff. I fel smarter once the class was over and he was very clear in explaining stuff. Cares a lot about his students and worth while going to review sessions. Offers a lot of cool extra credit too! Take his class!
Very good teacher.
Fantastic Professor!!! Take his class, it has been my favorite so far at the U. He's animated, funny, and you'll find yourself wanting to go to lecture. Study groups very worthwhile for quizzes. Chooses topics based on what class wants. Relates well to college students. Simply put, best, most interesting class you will ever have.
One of the best professors at the university. I wanted to switch to a geology major after taking this course. AMAZING professor. I actually learned something when taking this course. Everyone should take this course even if it is not a requirement. Labs were a drag, but it is made up for in lecture.
Smart and entertaining professor!! Makes learning about geology fun and interesting. Relates very well to college students and their mind frame. My favorite class so far! Highly recommend taking his class!!
Amazin!
Absolutely fantastic professor. He is extremely willing to help you and WANTS you to enjoy his class and do well in it. I never thought that I would enjoy this class, but I had an absolutely amazing semester with him. Fave class so far, and the best professor that I have ever encountered!
Amazing Professor!!! He cares about his students and it shows! He wants you to understand the material and do well! Instead of tests he gives Quizes every two weeks which is alot nicer than two midterms and a final. Biggest piece of advice: go to his review sessions!! They are the best way to study for the quizzes!!
Kent has a different purpose of comprehension for students. He wants you to comprehend the processes, not just memorize. His question are like this: What would happen IF the mantle had the same composition as the core? Not easy questions. But you learn a lot this way and the topic is interesting as well as his lectures.
Best teacher I've had at the U. Seriously considered majoring in geology after taking his course. Makes the material very interesting and relevant to daily life. Take a class with Kirkby!
Greatest teacher of college career so far!
Best teacher eva!!!!!!!! Loved his accent and he's from Milwaukee! Tells great stories and holds my attention for three full hours, which really means a lot because I have the attention span of a moth and I'm also a design student. Previously, I hated rocks, but now I can tolerate them. Take a class with Kirkby!
Kent is such a great professor! He actually cares about what he's talking about. He'll make anything interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Kent is the best professor! He is so passionate about geology...It becomes contagious.
The Man can teach...best professor i have had and will probably ever have...he got an applause the last day of class...dude should run for President or something
Wonderful teacher! He can make any topic interesting and fun to learn about.
incredibly smart person and great personality!! Genius!!
Amazing prof! definitely take his class if you get the chance. I only took the class to get physical science + lab out of the wayy, but he makes it so interesting. Def go to the review sessions - that's how you will do well on his quizzes.. i hope he has an anthro class or something to get bio+lab out of they way as well!!
Excellent professor, possibly my best ever. Kent rocks
Kirkby is the truth
The material isn't too tough, just make sure you attend class. Even though lecture notes are available online, it doesn't mean they are useful by themselves. He adds to them quite a bit, so make sure you take notes. Sometimes he talks too quickly and the one-day 2.5 hour night class can get a little boring after a while. However, he does teach well
Kent Kirkby makes lecture so interesting. He knows his stuff. I never missed lecture because I enjoyed it a lot. He puts his lecture notes online, so reading isn't necessary, but it helps clear some stuff up. The quizzes are bi-weekly & he drops the 2 lowest. Highly recommended.
Best professor I've had yet. He makes the lecture interesting, and is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. The lab is pretty hard, but if you ask him for extra credit he'll offer it. Take his class!
Awesome Professor! Helps you acheive your goals. Makes geology interesting. Understands student's situations.
Kirkby is the IDEAL professor. If ALL college professors were like him then I think people would be more excited about learning and going to class. He works with you and doesn't treat you like a little kid. Very interesting and highly recomended!
Awesome teacher, can't say better things about him.
Kirkby is an excellent professor. I cannot recommend him enough. I wish I *had* to take another one of his classes. I hope to have more profs like him, but I'm afraid he is one in a million.
By far Kent is one of the best teachers I have had. His classes are his passion. He requires students to study and his test are very fair. Highly recommended.
I loved this course, he was a great professor. He was VERY interesting to listen to, and motivated me to learn the subject matter well.
This man can teach. Amazingly.
He is an amazing teacher. I would take another class with him, but unfortunately the only other class he teaches is about dinosaurs. Easily one of the best teachers at the U.
Kent, is a great professor! He made learning the subject matter interesting and I enjoyed going to his class. He's extremely helpful and wants all of hist student to succeed. You can tell that this his passion and he loves teaching the subject matter. Highly recommended.
By far the best professor I've ever had! Very entertaining and easy to listen to. I was surprised with how interesting he made a class about rocks.
This was a FANTASTIC class! It was very easy and very interesting. He made class educational and fun. He was great at explaining things too. Also, notice that he puts effort into making jokes during lectures and laugh at them.
Kirkby is the best professor I've ever had. I had difficulty with the first test, talked to him and he helped me improve. He's awesome!
This man can teach! I had no interest in Geology but his passion exudes on others. I did poorly in the beginning but he wants everyone to succeed. I ended up pulling an A in his class due to his help. He cares about his students and though I'm not a geology major I have to say this one of the best professors I've ever had. Take him if you can!
Great instructor. Very lucky to have him.
You know those professors that colleges advertise? The ones that inspire and truly care about students? Kent is one of the few that actually fits the description. He's an amazing lecturer, is a very funny guy, and is a very fair tester/grader. I can't tell you how many people I've told to "TAKE THIS CLASS" just because of him. Fantastic.
Best freaking professor I've ever had! Kent makes his lectures extremely interesting and the fact that he actually wants his students to succeed makes the course that much better. The way he teaches is top notch and it makes it easy to get a really good grade. If you get the chance, take one of his classes, you will not regret it.
Kent is awesome! He made geo1001 2.5 hr lecture fun, and time flew by. i was undecided before this class, and now am pursuing a geo major. it's easy, but the stuff you learn you remember. he tells you what's on the quizzes basically so easy a too. definitely recommend !
Kent Kirkby is an amazing professor. He loves what he is teaching and it shows. He presents the material in an easy to understand way and goes out of his way to make sure his students do well in the class like having review sessions before every biweekly quiz. Plus there is extra credit on all of his quizzes which makes getting an A really easy!
Awesome class! the depth of material was incredible. TAKE IT
Best Professor I have had at the U of M. PHENOMENAL at making geology come to life--I was legitimately sad when I would have to miss class. It's not so much a lecture as it is story time that leaves you with awesome messages-- I wish I would have videotaped some of them!
Kent has really interesting lectures, that while not mandatory to attend, I made it to all of them out of interest. He's funny and teaches you a lot. Only grievance is the fact that the quizzes are fairly difficult if you don't have much prior knowledge, but study and you'll be fine. Great guy, and a brilliant prof you will learn a lot from!
Pretty good class. It may take a quiz or two to get a good grade but 2 of 7 quizes are dropped. Pretty interesting class. He's got a good sense of humor which lightens it up sometimes. I would recommend it but you should actually study for quizzes!!
Kirkby is a great professor who will keep you comin' back for more. His uncharacteristic pronunciation of the word "building" cracks me up every time. Furthermore when taking his class you will be exposed to a plethora of pictures of the Volcano Vesuvius, as it is his all time favorite "sexy" volcano on Earth. "Dinosaurs rule!" -Kent C. Kirkby
Very nice and funny guy! Holds study sessions before every test and quiz! Overall awesome prof!
Kent is GREAT. The material isn't all that interesting to me, but he keeps it fun. His comments are enough to make me want to come to class. He is truly hysterical at times. This class is insanely easy. You have to study a bit for the quizzes, but not much at all. This class is a breeze. He is awesome and really helpful!
Kent is easily the best professor I've ever had. If you need to finish up your lib eds this class is a must. Kent make the information easy to comprehend, and very interesting. I'm personally not interested in the subject matter but he made the class really engaging. You get to drop 2 of the 7 quizzes that make up your grade as well. TAKE THIS!
Not looking forward to this class at all but ended up really enjoying it, you absolutely HAVE to take Kent if you're taking Geology. He really made material interesting and really made me understand the concepts, not just memorize random facts. Go to the review sessions, they help a lot. Awesome class
Kent is awesome. He makes the class very fun and interesting. If you need to fill a lib ed, this is the course and professor to use. I would recommend it to anyone.
Prof. Kirkby did a very good job of keeping an uninteresting subject very interesting. He added anecdotes that held my interest (although didn't particularly add to my subject knowledge) and was very forgiving with his grading method. He's a great guy too, definitely a breeze of a Lib. Ed. to take if you're looking for one.
BEST professor I have had at the U of M. He is absolutely hilarious and has no problem whatsoever helping you out. I have even discussed problems with him and he gave me points back! He is such a funny, nice, and intelligent guy. I would take his classes over and over if I had the time! Take his classes. You won't stop laughing!
Kent is a phenomenal instructor. Smart, funny, and easy! Offers lecture outlines, study guides, and review sessions to help you learn the material. If you follow along in lecture and complete the study guides, it is impossible to do poorly. Your total grade is 8 quizzes, 20 points each, but you drop your lowest two scores! Easy Lib Ed fulfillment.
Kent is awesome! Everyone should take at least one class with him. He makes it funny and interesting. Go to the study sessions. They help a lot!
Kent is the man. Always is straight forward with you. Class consists of lecture 3 days a week with bi-weekly quizes (a quiz every two weeks). You do not need the text book. Just pay attention and take notes in lecture. Kent always made the class interesting with his humor. Also, he loves students and helps you out whenever needed.
Kent is by far the best professor i have had at the U. He turns this topic that is not interesting to really fun and interesting. He goes out of his way to help his students making resources and himself accessible. His review sheets are really helpful. If you have an opportunity to take a class with kent i would do it !!
Great guy. Has some wit that keeps the class interesting. Lecture grade is based on the best 5 of 7 quizzes which is nice. Offers fun extra credit like going to Underwater World at MOA. Going to class isn't mandatory but recommended.
Kent taught the most interesting lecture of my collegiate career. Incredibly friendly and accomodating I could not reccomend him more. Listen in lecture (trust me, you'll have no problem paying attention), study a bit, do the extra credit and you should get an A.
Totally cool guy. His lectures explain everything you need to know in a pretty straightforward way, and the quizzes are drawn pretty much directly from the lecture topics. Likes to tell interesting stories related to the subject matter. Overall, great guy and fun class.
Awesome Professor made every class interesting. He also was enthusiastic about the topic. I learned a ton about the subject even though the class was not very difficult.
Awesome professor, my favorite thus far! His enthusiasm made lectures easy to sit through, looked forward to this class. Quizzes were easy if you paid attention during the lectures, rarely read and did well in course!
Professor Kikrby is soooo amazing!! He is enthusiastic at teaching. He is a funny guy and you will never feel sleepy in his class. Attending every class and study a little, you will get a good grade.
He's incredible! Absolutely one of my favorite professors!
THIS. GUY. IS. THE. MAN! Absolutely my favoirte professor at the U. He takes a boring subject and makes it interesting - like you never want to miss a lecture interesting. Take his class if you can.
Wow! Amazing professor. He made the least interesting topic into a lecture I looked forward to everyday! He is very passionate and sometimes explains things to fast. If you don't understand a concept after class email him or go to office hours, he'll explain it perfectly. Utilize the review sessions! Not extremely easy but a good physical science.
Pretty interesting class. Lectures were not mandatory but they were interesting. Attend the review sessions as they will help before the quizes.
One of my favorite professors at the UofM due to his fantastic lecturing. He's passionate about Geology, humorous, and makes the subject matter very easy to understand. I recommend taking the lab portion as it gives you an advantage to the quizzes. Never looked at my textbook. Definitely the best prof teaching the course and great for ENV lib ed.
Prof. Kirkby makes the material relevant and fascinating. I was not sure about taking geology, but this was the class I looked forward to every week. The course covers a wide range of topics from Volcanoes to Ocean Systems and Dr. Kirkby draws the connection between geology, history, and our lives today with brilliant examples.
Professor Kirby's a really great and well-respected guy, the subject material is fun, and the homework assignments and tests are few and far between. If you want an A, you'll have to know the material, but it shouldn't be too hard if you go to lecture.
Attendance is not mandatory but actually listening to lectures is about the only way to survive. It looks like an easy A for LE requirements. It's not a walk in the park. Never though volcanoes and plate tectonics could get that confusing. If you're interested in that kind of stuff, He's an AMAZING teacher!
I wasn't that interested in the actual coursework but in his lectures he made it seem more interesting. They were kind of long lectures but weren't that bad to sit through.
As a CLA kid, science isn't totally my thing. This was my physical science credit. Kirkby is an incredibly engaging professor and I love how he's able to connect the hard science to the "real" world effectively and in a way that really gets students to think.
He is the best! A great professor, funny, and if you show up you will learn a lot as well as pass the class!
Class exams require you to study. But Kent is an amazing professor I have ever seen at U. He has been always there to help me all the time. He always answers my question, always replies on my emails, even makes a separate time for me to schedule for extra help. Not only that, he tries hard to make his lecture interesting. Recommend him.
What can I say that hasn't been said below about Kent. Seven quizzes 20pt quizzes (best 5 count) and the final make up your lecture grade. The lab isn't too bad, sometimes got long but fairly straightforward. If your looking to take ESCI 1001 Kent is the man to take. Go to class and you'll do well on the quizzes, if your struggling go talk to Kent!
Professor Kirkby is probably one of the best lecturers at the U. He uses stories and humor to make his lectures interesting, and is happy to meet outside of class to help you out. His quizzes test your knowledge, not your memorization abilities, and are reasonably difficult. Take his class - you won't regret it.
Kent Kirkby was a really interesting professor, and it is clear that he loves his subject. A lot! The class was kind of boring in my opinion, except for the dinosaurs, but there was tons of extra credit and the tests were really easy if you pay attention to the lectures and study. No need to use the textbook, don't even buy it.
Great and funny guy. Quizzes and tests are really easy if you go to lecture and halfway pay attention.
Kent is my favorite professor I have had at the U. FRIDAY LECTURES HAVE EXTRA CREDIT QUESTIONS. He knows so much about the material, and it seems nerdy but it's awesome. He has review sessions for every test the night before, and goes in depth over everything on the study guide. He also brought like 100 cans of pop to lecture one day for all of us!
Quizzes every other Friday! Attend Friday lectures and you will get extra credit on the quizzes! Never read the textbook. Quizzes are pretty tough and applied, but you'll get the hang of it.
Extra stuffs for quizzes on Fridays, so try not to miss them. Great lecturer, uses alot of stories to connect to his material, and humorous.
I LOVED this class. He's great at explaining things and lectures are hilarious. Attendance is a necessity, but I enjoyed myself every time. Quizzes test understanding rather than memorization, so it's a little harder but Kent helps you every step of the way. I would definitely take this again.
I love this man. He doesn't just drone on about rocks -- he really knows how to structure a lecture and integrate storytelling and fun facts to effectively engage students. Class covers plate tectonics, dinosaurs, oceans, rivers, climate, etc. If you need the LE or are just interested, take ESCI 1001 from Kent!
Kent is a great guy who gives great, engaging lectures. I took this class as a lib ed and actually found it harder than I thought it would be, but nonetheless, Kirkby loves teaching the class and his enthusiasm is infectious. I would recommend him because he truly cares about his students and what he is teaching.
His lecture were interesting and fun and he had a lot of opportunities for extra credit. The lab section was really difficult.
Kirkby is a great guy that is clearly passionate about the subject he teaches. Lectures are more like big long connected stories and he always finds a way to keep them interesting. Quizzes are a bit difficult and definitely require lecture attendance to do well. I skipped too many classes and it bit me in the but on some quizzes.
Best professor I've ever had.
Show up to class! The answers to extra credit quiz questions are covered in Friday lectures. Kent is just a fun geek and loves talking about earth sciences, so ask him questions. He gives study guides for major exams and holds review sessions where he will answer in-depth any question regarding them that you ask.
Kent is such a great professor, super interesting lectures, and made the quizzes easy by attending review sessions. Genuinely enjoys what he teaches, making it so much better for the students.
Weekly tests, but they aren't hard if you listen and pay attention in lectures. Very good at using the ppt as a rough guide for his lectures, so you need to be there to hear what he actually has to say (he does post the slides online). Class was designated 75 min, but we usually got out in under 60.
Simply put, if you don't go to lectures, you won't pass. I learned this the hard way. In the beginning I constantly skipped lecture and now I'm digging myself out of a hole due to bad quiz grades. You may get away with missing a couple, but go to the review sessions. They'll help tremendously. He's a nice guy who genuinely wants you to pass.
Absolutely passionate about the subject and it shows in his lectures. If you put the effort you will learn everything you need to from the lectures. Puts a fun twist in most of them, too.
His lectures are amazing. I was sad on the few occasions I had to miss them. Attend every class and pay attention, and you will pass easily. Attend the study sessions before quizzes, and you will ace this class. I hope Kent Kirkby never leaves the U, never dies, and teaches forever.
Kent was my favorite teacher this past semester! He is an excellent public speaker with a real passion for what he's teaching. The lecture itself was an hour and fifteen minutes long, but he made it go by so fast. He also hosts review sessions before quizzes which are super helpful. They saved my grade! Take him!
Kent is great! He is so kind to students and he is also passionate about his teaching! His lecture is really interesting!! But this course's lab is not that easy so really need to spend many time in reading the lab materials.
Kent loves teaching geology and he is kind of inspiring in that way because I didn't actually care for the class very much. Quizzes were harder than what I thought they would be, but Kent puts in the time and is always helpful if you reach out for it. Would take the class just for him again. Have to go to lectures to do well.
Kirkby is awesome. This is a class to look forward to. Great speaker, funny and interesting lectures. It's a breeze if you pay attention and write down some important things every once in a while. No exams, just quizzes every other week. Highly recommended.
One of the best professors at the U. He's very passionate about geology and his lectures will keep you enthralled since he is an interesting storyteller. You will learn a lot and grow as a person from taking his class. He also impressed me with how much he really cares about his students. He always treated me with compassion and warmth.
Took his class freshman year and loved it!! His lectures are great and his class covers such a wide variety of subjects. If you are planning to take ESCI 1001 or 1101 take it ONLY with him!
Kent is an awesome teacher and very into the subject he is teaching! Go to class and understand the material or else you will have a very hard time with the quizzes and thats all your grade is based on. Highly recommend but can be difficult.
He is nice, warm, and very caring. The lecture outlines helped me keep up with the detailed, fast paced lecture and definitely go to review session. He covers all materials that will appear on biweekly quiz which can be a real pain. Questions are not what we're used to but will get the hang of it. Understand the concept THOROUGHLY! Work for that A!
Kent is organized, respectful, passionate, and has a great sense of humor. His lectures are like storytelling and he makes sure you thoroughly understand the material. Best of all: he brings it back to how it affects your own life. No busy work. Plenty of extra credit. Clear grading criteria. You'll be studying hard but it is worth it!!
I am not a science person but professor Kirby made science a complete joy for me. He is so passionate about his field of work & makes students understand his passion. Great at explaining concepts. Very sweet.
Show up half the time and you'll get an easy A. The only tricky thing is that if you don't do extra credit the most you can get is 97% and 94% is needed for an A (so its a slim margin). But if you get all the extra credit you can get 108%, so its still an easy A. DON'T GET THE TEXTBOOK. he doesn't use it.
Kent makes the subject relevant and engaging! Science is not of interest to me much, but his lecture style of storytelling, integrating the materials taught into real life examples, really helped keep me engaged and learn as well! No lie, he is a GREAT teacher; he is one of the best that I've ever had! HIs quizzes are fair too!
Kent is incredible, truly. He is unbelievably quick at responding to emails and is very helpful in all communications I have had with him. Highly recommended.
Best professor I've ever had! Definitely go to review sessions! Helps a lot when studying for quizzes.
Kent is a fantastic professor! His lectures are not boring and he makes learning about natural hazards quite interesting. Your grade depends on 5 out of 7 best scores on bi-weekly quizzes and online quizzes you can take over until you get 100%. Extra credit is offered on each quiz and even the final, so don't skip class. HIGHLY recommend Kent!
Best professor I've ever had! Kent is very passionate about earth science and it shows in his lectures! Lectures are very interesting and Kent is hilarious! The quizzes aren't easy, so makes sure you show up to every lecture and go to each review session and you'll do fine! You have to work for an A but it's worth it!
Kent is a super nice professor and really tries to make the class enjoyable and manageable. His lectures are very interesting and it feels like he's telling you a story instead of preaching at you. He's super funny and throws some clever jokes in now and then. If you go to class and pay attention, the quizzes are very easy. Highly recommend!
Kent taught very interesting lectures. It's clear he enjoyed teaching. He was humorous, accessible, and helpful. Textbooks are not required as long as you show up for class. He gives quizzes every other week, which aren't bad if you study for them. There are many opportunities to get bonus points and extra credit. Overall, a fantastic guy.
Professor Kirkby is a world class professor. He knows his stuff, and makes it enjoyable for the rest of us, regardless if you were interested in the topics or not. He was always helpful, and always treated us respect. As long as you show up to class, you should have no issues with the class.
His quizzes were worded a little tricky - but he drops two quizzes out of the whole semester - which helps a lot! Try to go to the review sessions and you should be able to do just fine. He also talks very very fast - so I suggest using your computer to take notes! He also offers a lot of extra credit to boost your grade
Kent Kirkby is a legendary professor. His lectures are fantastic and the course material is extremely interesting even for someone like me who had no prior interest in any of the subjects taught. Quizzes are easy enough if you study for them and there is ample opportunity for extra credit. The labs are very easy too and have their own extra credit!
Cannot recommend him enough. Throughout all my time at the University he was by far my favorite professor. And I was a Sports Management major. His lectures were entertaining and captivating. Taking notes of his powerpoints are a must, but if you read through all of them once before the quiz you will pass. He drops the worst 2 scores. Just a gem.
One of the best professors I've had. Genuinely cares about the success of his students and tries to make the class accessible to as many people as possible. His teaching style is engaging and lectures are never boring. Make sure you show up to class; all of the quizzes are strictly over lecture material.
Kent Kirkby is the smartest human being I have ever met. His knowledge on all subjects that he teaches (not just rocks) is incredible. It is all lectures but his powerpoints are amazing and he is hilarious. the quizzes are really hard, so even though i loved the prof it was a tough class.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY A. Although Kent is a wonderful lecturer the quizzes are worded very confusingly and you will have to study hard for this class so I wouldn't recommend taking it as an elective or one of many options if you already have a tough schedule.
Kent is the best professor in the whole entire world and I wish he was my grandpa.
Kent is an amazing professor, and he made an introductory geology course very interesting. If you want a good grade attending class is a must, but the book is not required to do well.
Kent's lectures are like interesting stories. He does a great job of explaining the significance and relevance of geology. Highly recommend
Soooo passionate about the material and really makes learning fun! A true gem and a rare find in a professor these days I HIGHLY recommend - if you can please take ESCI 1003!!!
Kent is the best professor I've ever had.
All I have to say is hats off to this man for executing this course so well, especially since it's new course! Not only was this class super interesting but you couldn't tell for a second that he didn't know what he was doing. With that being said, quizzes weren't a walk in the park and active listening during his lecture is a must. Labs a joke.
Dinosaurs in Our World.. Why would you not take that?? It is such a fun class, and the labs are really fun too. His lectures are interesting/funny and the quizzes are pretty tricky. They're worded kind of difficult, so I recommend taking this class with a friend and studying together. All in all, amazing professor!!
Kent is an amazing person and professor. His lectures were always interesting and I always looked forward to going to class. The style of the quizzes threw me off at first but after going into office hours, Kent provided me with helpful advice. His class was fun, and easy if you attend class. Highly recommend taking a course with Kent!
Attendance is not required, but going to class helps. Lectures are always entertaining. As long as you show up and put in some effort easy A
Kent's lectures are great, and he's super passionate about what he teaches. I'm not a Science major, so I found the quizzes quite difficult, but I loved the class and highly recommend it.
Kent is a super cool guy. He's very approachable and passionate and makes lectures fun and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and would consider it easily my favourite course of the year. Very highly recommend to anyone.
I missed one class of his and I wish I could go back and change that. Kent Kirkby? More like Clark Kent.
I took it the first semester it was offered so it may have changed a bit. But Kent is a great teacher and is really fun to listen to. Took this for my Physical Science credit, very simple. Study for the Friday quiz the night before and your good.
Honestly this best professor I have ever had. Such an amazing and interesting lecturer, plus such an interesting topic. Never once did I miss a lecture, as I was actually excited to go to class each day and listen to Kent. Everyday I learned something and left feeling engaged and curious.
what a guy. i wish all my professor were like this he makes me wanna go back to CSE.... (jk) but forreal this dude is the best. throws in some good jokes now and then, gives a clear review guide that really helps you prepare for the test, and does review sessions for every quiz. on top of it he just seems super knowledgeable. respek
Kent's lectures are compelling though a little fast paced (goes through slides very quickly). Depending on how you study, quizzes can be hard (also because of wording). Kent provides review sessions that are incredibly helpful if you miss lecture & readily gives any support he can. Overall, he's a great dude & I always came out of class enlightened
Fantastic class, even more fantastic professor. Lectures are engaging, relevant, and meaningful, mixing not only geology/earth science but history, anthropology and current society. Even as a non-science major, I looked forward to class every day and left feeling challenged and inspired. Lab section is also engaging, but Kent is the real gem. A+
Kent is amazing!! Lecture attendance isn't taken but I think necessary to fully understand the content for quizzes, and he keeps them very interesting and engaging. Every lecture was a story and I learned so so so much from this class and all of it has stuck with me so far. I definitely recommend
Took this class in Spring 18 and I still remember so much despite not majoring in ESCI. His lectures are AMAZING and so informative. The quizzes can be kinda tricky so review all of his slides a few days before the quiz. Lab is also p easy but you do need to know what's going on. This is one of my most FAVORITE classes ever. Take it and be wowed!
It's clear from the first day of class that the only thing this man is as passionate about as Earth Science is his students. He genuinely wants everyone to know all they can about our planet and the environment, regardless of whether they plan to major in it. He keeps even somewhat dry material interesting, and even his tangents are educational.
Kent is a great lecturer, so going to the lectures is not boring. He does add certain information only from lectures into tests, so it's important to attend his lectures. Grading is based on quizzes, lab, and a final quiz. I don't find them to be to hard, and he gives a great study guide for the quizzes.
Kirkby is an incredibly knowledgable, interesting, and passionate lecturer. He makes rocks about as interesting as possible. The only downside is his quizzes are pretty tough. Definitely not an easy A or easy lib-ed.
I have absolutely no interest in the subject but Kent makes lectures interesting. His passion shows and he designs lectures knowing that 95% of his students aren't majoring in anything related to the class. Quizzes are hard and the lab is boring and annoying but the lectures make up for it. This is the best biology lib ed class at the U.
Took the class pass fail and was worried I didn't score enough on the final to pass, so I emailed the professor asking for specifics on grading. He responded about a half hour later with my score and "good job" the same day we took the final. Went out of his way to make sure I had peace of mind. All around great guy.
Great guy. His lectures are interesting and he always has a positive attitude. The labs were my least favorite part of this class, however. Overall though, this class is a great option to take if you need to meet it's requirements! Was very nervous about my final grade but after emailing him he let me know how I did and gave me positive feedback.
Kent is the best professor I've taken at the U. He's so caring and willing to work with you so you pass. I've struggled with science so much in the past, but Kent is good at making clear lectures that are easy to understand.
Professor Kirby is simply the best professor at the University of Minnesota. His lectures are well-crafted, interesting and hilarious! This class is the easiest/most fun biology course.
Professor Kirkby has amazing lectures and engaging content for the size of the lecture he teaches. It's important to pay attention, because the tests can be tricky. With COVID-19 disrupting the semester, Professor Kirkby showed to be extremely accommodating, supportive, and caring towards his students. Some of the best character I've seen in a prof
I LOVE Kent. He is brilliantly hilarious, and makes lecture incredibly fun. He was caring almost to a fault. Fixed the class curve for the online semester. Labs are great.
Highly recommend the class for a lib ed. Kent is a funny dude, very nice, and makes the material engaging. Quizzes are all multiple choice "select the answer that is false" and can be a little hard but overall the classes are very manageable. no outside work required is also a plus.
Simply one of the kindest professors I've ever had who will clearly go out of his way to accommodate students. He doesn't have any official open hours, for example, because he fears picking times that don't work for some students so he simply changes them, week to week, based on student need. You'll have to study a bit, but the grading is generous
Kent is truly kind. He gives charismatic lectures that keep you entertained but are still informative and he is hilarious. He puts out study guides that basically tell you everything that will be on the test and offers extra credit on each quiz. If you can take one of his classes, do it. It'll be worth it.
Professor Kirkby is the epitome of a great professor. When our Dinosaurs class moved online, he regularly sent emails asking us how we were doing and what he could do to help. He is extremely accommodating and his lectures are super interesting. I would recommend him to anyone.
Loved Professor Kirkby for this course! I had Kirkby during the switch to online during COVID-19 and he handled the situation in the best way. He was consistent with quizzes every other week based on previous lectures. Class was very reasonable, I just did the given study guides and went to lecture. If you ask for help he is more than willing to.
He is an amazing professor. I had him during the covid-19 pandemic and he was extremely accessible, very caring and understanding, and adapted extremely well to the online format and students' needs. The class itself (ESCI 1003) is super fun and the lab is awesome. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I think Kent is a great professor and very knowledgeable in his studies, but I found his online lectures to be very jam-packed and it felt like one lecture could be broken down into 3-4. The tests are constantly finding the false answer out of the correct ones which sounds easy but he can throw curveballs that will make you confused.
Does not use proctorio, amazing teacher and very friendly.
Best online class I have had so far. Professor Kirkby is very accommodating to peoples needs but will not let you slack off either.
This man is a blessing to the University. I took ESCI1001 online due to COVID and his lectures kept me sane and happy through it all. Take a class with Mr. Kirkby, you won't regret it one bit!
Kent is a GEM. He makes learning easy. He uses fun analogies that make you remember content, and you can hear in his voice how much he loves the subject and wants to share that with you. Never have I ever had so much fun learning. I didn't even get that good of a grade, but it was still so much fun and worthwhile. Take this class!!!
Kirkby's lecture delivery is extremely engaging, and he works in humor effectively throughout. The workload is light, and even the most disinterested student will find some interesting connections to the material.
Great professor. Didn't think I would enjoy the class as much as I did. The world is lucky to have this man teaching about things he cares about so much.
In my opinion, Kent is the best professor at the U of M. He is so kind and constantly shows that he truly cares about his students. His lectures are funny and interesting, and he is always open to explain things in more depth if need be.
Kirkby is genuinely such an amazing instructor. His lectures are clearly spoken (if sometimes a bit rambly), his criteria are clear, and he is always available via email and will pretty much always respond within 24 hours. I implore anyone who has the option to take Dr. Kirkby's classes.
KENT IS THE BEST! His lectures are so interesting like of course dinos are interesting, but his commentary and stories make them so fun to watch! 10/10 professor and class, you gotta take this as your bio lib ed if you can. The quizzes are a bit tricky, as well as the labs but if you take good notes and do the labs with others its easy. EC ops too!
I love profs who understand most students are only taking their class for a lib ed but want them to be excited about the material anyway. Kent has a great sense of humor and his lectures are entertaining. I felt like I learned a lot about the world, not just dinosaurs. Quizzes are straightforward, labs are tricky, but there's lots of extra credit.
Not sure if it's usually this hard, or if it was just because I took the class online. Would not take again. Quizzes are unnecessarily specific, and labs are not on what you learn in lecture. While extra credit is awarded, it's more of a mandatory option because of the labs' difficulty. He does not curve
absolutely based prof. love u kent
Bi-weekly quizzes are unnecessarily specific and don't test you on comprehension, as he states, but rather on memorization of every word stated in lectures. The multiple choice questions are designed to trip you up. The quizzes also build on each other, so you have to constantly study old material. The lab portion is extremely difficult
Kent is a good and knowledgeable prof. Class is based on biweekly lecture quizzes, which are difficult but open-note and entirely fair if you pay attention. Lectures are interesting and easy to follow. I took the class with the lab portion, which is not necessary, but you'll be fine in labs if you work with a good group and stay focused.
Professor Kirkby is very caring and is understanding that not everyone has a passion for geology. His lectures are very clear and quite entertaining. I took the lab portion of this course and while it can be confusing, it's really helpful if you have a good group. Overall I would definitely take his class again.
His lecture videos feel really jampacked and can be confusing at times. A lot of the questions on the lecture quizzes are based on finding the false answer, which can trip you up. I'm not having a good time in this class. Probably the hardest course I've taken in college so far. Would not recommend this course to anyone.
This is the hardest class Ive ever taken. The teaching strategy is NOT the way to go. On tests you most often have to choose which answer is false. There are no assignments in this class and only tests. I regret taking this class. Im likely going to have to retake it because Im doing very poorly. Canvas is locked so you cant see your grades.
Professor Kent is absolutely the best! Very entertaining lectures and he really cares about his students and is always willing to accommodate. Quizzes are not easy but very manageable. I would go far to say take an audit class with this man, he will make you enjoy the material and has a unique way of relating it with human society and culture.
The class is great. His lecture are always interesting and he is super nice. The quizzes are easy and theres always extra credit questions. He's also super accommodating and gives online options for everything. The labs are definitely harder because they aren't always connected to lecture.
kent is the best prof ive ever had. he truly cares about the content and his students. i wasnt a real esci guy before this but i might be changing my mind now. love u kent <3
The lecture videos are jampacked and confusing. The quiz questions were based on finding the false answer, which can trip you up. Dr. Kirkby claimed that his tests were based on comprehension, even though I felt like a big chunk of it was based on memorization. He takes this class too seriously, especially since it's only an intro class!
This class was challenging at times. The bi-weekly quizzes were open note but it is crucial to not rely them and to review before the quizzes. His lectures were interesting and he makes the time you put into class worthwhile.
only passed because I had an amazing TA who helped me get an A in the lab portion (which is extremely hard and confusing). This class is lecture-heavy with 12-14 lecture videos every 2 weeks. He talks so fast that a 15 min video would take me 40 mins to take notes on. No exams just biweekly quizzes. They were very confusing & worded poorly.
Nicest prof you'll ever take, so accomodating and truly cares about his students, but do NOT take this if you think it's an easy A lib ed class. Lectures are content heavy, every five mins of lecture is like 1/2-1 pg of notes and you basically have to know the lecture content word for word to get an A on quizzes.
This professor made classes interesting and it was very clear that he cares about his students and their success. If you are like me and not the best at science- the quiz questions are worded in a way that makes it difficult to understand what is being asked. Any potential student should be aware quizzes are based on comprehension, not memorization
I really enjoyed the class and I got a good grade, but I had to put in a lot of effort into watching the lecture videos and taking notes. If you're looking for an easy liberal education requirement, this isn't the class for you. Nice guy though, his lecture videos are super well made and the grading structure is clear.
This was one of the few classes that I actually got excited to go to. Kent Kirkby does a great job at making the lectures interesting and accessible to everyone. The quizzes are bi-weekly, but open-note, which means they are easy as long as you pay attention to lectures and are prepared to take a lot of notes.
I took a remote class with only video lectures along with optional study guides. However, these videos were amazing. Kent is great at using analogies to make concepts easier to understand. He is very easy to reach out to by email if you have additional questions. The quizzes were a bit difficult, but studying and re-watching videos helps a lot.
Professor Kirkby is a caring person and an expert in his field, but this class was much more difficult than I expected. Tests are biweekly and can be very tricky, and the lectures are very fast and contain an overwhelming amount of information. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy lib ed course.
The lectures are short but very boring so I had to force myself to watch them every week.If you don't pay attention to every second, then you are screwed for the quizzes which are 'find what's false'questions. Also last quiz and final are 2 days apart...yay. It felt like this class was designed to be as difficult as it could be.take a different LE.
please do not take this class if you have no interest in dinosaurs, fossils, rocks, etc, because it will become your LIFE. The quizzes were unnecessarily difficult, labs were eh, and the lectures were... *tears*. Hardest class after calculus 2. Respectfully, would never go through this again.
I had this class online, so I'm biased in thinking the coursework was easier. Video lectures are about 10-20 minutes in length. I found that a lot of quiz material was what was actually said in the lecture, so you do have to take notes on those. My method was doubling the time of a lecture for notes (e.g. 10 min lecture takes 20 mins to complete)
Professor Kirkby is the sweetest prof I've ever had. He really cares about all of his students passing the class, and it shows. His lectures are super interesting, but he can talk fast on occasion, so I have to play catch-up in between lectures. Lab for this class is boring but that is not his fault. Take Professor Kirkby!
I took the online lecture section, and I did not regret it! The recorded lectures aren't too long and I thought Kirkby made them pretty interesting. Each quiz has extra credit questions and all of the questions are based almost word-for-word on the lectures, so if you take good notes you will be able to do well.
This class was definitely the most difficult LibEd class that I have taken. The lectures were very information dense and notes are REQUIRED if you want to exceed in the quizzes. I learned that the hard way. The quizzes are a bit tricky but Prof. Kirkby is truly a saint. He is one of the most caring and attentive professors I have had.
He is a great guy who is passionate about teaching. I think what helped me the most were his lectures with powerpoints that were visually interesting. He does talk fast, but he posts lectures online as well. Don't get me wrong, his classes aren't easy, you have to work for it, but definitely choose a class with him for your lib ed requirement.
Really great professor. His teaching style really makes the class interesting and fun. He is also very accommodating.
Kent's lectures are like watching rabbit hole youtube videos- he is so engaging and fun to listen to! I've taken him twice and it's very easy to do well. His structure is clear and the workload isn't strenous- his classes were a breath of fresh air in my courseload! Highly recommend.
Very passionate about the material and good at explaining it.
He is an amazing lecture and his class is very easy to follow, as long as you show up to lectures the tests are easy.
Professor Kent Kirkby is an amazing professor to have. You can tell that his lecture slides are very well put together and thought out. Personally, I am not really into Earth Science but this professor really taught me a lot about Earth Sciences and the different things that connect to it. I recommend taking this class.
Really knowledgeable professor you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches and makes all the topics interesting. Easy to skip and watch lectures on Canvas and still do well on quizzes. Grading is easy 7 total quizzes biweekly and he drops your worst 2.
Kent made it very hard to understand the material and assigned more work than was granted given the course syllabus. His lectures were very monotone and hard to comprehend.
Kent is the nicest professor I have ever had. He obviously cares a lot about his students. Quizzes are easy if you do the lectures (I did the online version).
Kent is nice and approachable if you are struggling, but his class design is terrible! Exams are the only things in the grade book The exams ask you "what is false..?" and are timed. The fact that the questions are worded so terrible and confusing makes them impossible. 100% TAKE THIS CLASS, BUT TAKE IT WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
Kent is great, I never go to class I just watch the online videos. He isn't the most entertaining lecturer, so even if I go to class I have to watch the videos to process the content. All exams are open notes and just do the study guide. You can tell he loves his job every time you watch a lecture or receive an email, which is just really amazing.
This class is very compression based, so understanding the basic concepts is crucial to the biweekly quizzes and final exam. Lectures are in a fun yet informational video format though which is helpful. Kirkby is also super flexible with things as long you contact him ASAP when things pop up. He's an overall super passionate and caring professor!
Loved the structure and clarity of this class! Kent's lectures were very informational and also humorous at times. My only complaint is that the only grade was based on biweekly quizzes. It was very hard to get a decent grade in the class because of this.
I think Mr. Kirkby was quite a bad teacher. He was very monotone and boring to listen to. He also would give out biweekly quizzes but each of the questions asked you to select the false answer. It was a very redundant grading technique. He also provided pre-quizzes for each quiz but the information provided and the correct answers were not similar.
Amazing prof, extremely caring and helpful, but very hard class. I didn't put in much effort, but the class is mostly comprehension and you need to watch and understand everything if you want to do well. Cannot just memorize the content. A lot of extra credit opportunities. Amazing prof but hard class
Lab and lecture of this class do not correlate. They cover two separate topics with different information. Lab is easy to pass. Class is a bit tougher if you do not read textbook.
Kirkby is really kind (a small little old man with a beard) Graded by 7 tests, a final, & biweekly lecture quizzes (these you have unlimited attempts) The tests are open note and multiple choice & extra credit q's, but difficult as you usually have to pick the false one. Many people on here say this, but beware they are harder than you think.
This fall semester was my first at UMN, and I could not have picked a better class to start with! Professor Kirkby is super passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches, and his enthusiasm is very infectious. His units, lectures, and quizzes have a very clear structure, and gives great study guides. Overall he's just a really awesome teacher.
This class taught me so much, I highly recommend it! Lecture videos are posted online so you don't need to go in for lectures which was amazing. Quizzes were open note open book so while slightly difficult the information was pretty easy to find. No homework at all except lab reading. Lab was a little difficult for me, but grading isn't too harsh.
I took this class online only. Although the online lecture videos are short and concise, the professor talks quite fast and is sometimes hard to follow along (especially if uninterested or confused). The quiz questions for the online only class were tough and it seemed like you had to pay extreme attention to the videos to get most of them right.
The professor is a good professor the online class is very difficult though. I don't recommend this course if you just wanna finish your lib ed requirements. The tests are really difficult, and you actually have to really really study the content. Nothing against the teacher, he was accessible and very helpful this is just a hard class.
Kent is a very good lecturer and is very passionate about what he teaches. He actually cares about the well-being of the students. The class is very easy and also pretty interesting, and you have biweekly quizzes that are not very hard.
This is a super fun class. The lectures are pretty short and the material is pretty easy. As long as you do the daily work you will be set!
kent is such a kind professor. however, his teaching style did not work for me, no matter how hard i studied. the biweekly quizzes ask you for the false answer, instead of correct answer. i found the wording to be very frustrating. his prefaces these quizzes as "against common study habits." i dont think the class is hard but didn't work for me
I would not recommend this class to others. There are numerous lectures and quizzes with questions with five answer choices where you must select the false option. The information presented on the slides isn't complete, making it useless for reference during quizzes. This difficulty level does not make sense for a 1000-level class.
I would not recommend this class. There are frequent quizzes where the questions ask which one is false instead of regular multiple-choice questions. The slides are picture-heavy and have little to no information on them and are not useful. For a 1000-level class, it's too much and takes too long to get any information. Don't take it.
I did good in the class, but the lectures were so boring. Quizzes are kind of challenging too. I wouldn't take a class with this professor again, but it was fine.
Kent is a really great professor and cares a lot about paleontology and how it relates to the modern world. I enjoyed this class because I'm interested in dinosaurs but if you aren't, I would not take this class. Lectures are very fast-paced but there are also backup videos on Canvas, and the quizzes are based on conceptualization.
This course is the easiest and most enjoyable course I've taken. The class grade is entirely based on pre-quizzes (6 pts, unlimited attempts) and quizzes (20 pts, open note.) This course is very self-guided, there are no additional assignments, but lectures are moderate length (5-20 mins each, 12 per session). Very engaging, passionate, and funny!
the lectures are really interesting and engaging. i usually watch them on 1.5 speed because he talks super slow but that's probably helpful for others! quizzes are open-note so if you watch all the lectures and take notes you'll be just fine! i found the content fascinating and really enjoyed the teaching style kent took so it was enjoyable for me
He's really good with answering his emails. Every time I emailed him, I got an answer within minutes. He's super accommodating and sweet. His lectures are genuinely entertaining. As long as you watch the lectures and take light notes, you'll do great. He also doesn't care about using Quizlet on quizzes, SOO helpful with that.
Pretty easy class. Prof posts videos of the lectures. Quizzes and lab are pretty easy. An overall easy class. Some effort has to be put in, but it's about an interesting subject. He does a good job lecturing and making it interesting. It's not all about dinosaurs either, we spent time talking about modern impacts and other things
I found Kirkby's lectures super entertaining and interesting. He clearly cares a lot about the topic. You will have to take notes on the lectures if you want to get a good grade but the class is pretty easy and straightforward.
Prof. Kirkby's class is engaging and informative, but requires consistent effort. The open-note quizzes are challenging, so using unstuckstudy AI alongside the textbook can really help with prep. Overall, a rewarding class if you stay on top of the material.
I took this class last semester and it was very easy. As long as you're watching the lecture videos and taking notes, then completing the pre-quizzes and quizzes you should do very well. Lectures are never longer than 20ish minutes and the concepts are not difficult, but quizzes are very specific. Overall I enjoyed this class.
Kirkby is a super nice guy. Lectures were long but he would drop some funny comments in them. A decently simple class. If you're not actually interested in geology though you might want to avoid it
Awesome Professor I took him online but his emails showed he deeply cares about students and doing well in the course You watch videos and gives you quizzes every two weeks maybe it's very straightforward and you can take pre quizzes unlimited attempts which will help with grades. Overall easy course and sends out heads up emails which really help
Pretty easy science class but it was very lecture heavy which was not very enjoyable but 2x speed is always a life saver. I liked that he made us study guides and the biweekly quizzes weren't hard if you did the study guides and knew how to use your online resources... overall, this was a very easy physical science class that I really recommend.
Helpful and insightful, forward thinking.
Kent's class was entirely online so we never actually met, but I absolutely loved his recorded online lectures. He teaches incredibly relevant information and his lecture videos feel like the fun little videos you see at museums. You get absolutely all the tools needed to succeed, grade is based on quizzes, lab, and a final.
Kirby was amazing, truly the goat of lectures. Every lecture was incredibly interesting and engaging. He absolutely loves what he does. He brought back my childlike love for dinosaurs. Somehow he did the impossible and made geology super fun and exciting to do. I never experienced any stress or sadness while taking this course. Love Professor Kirby
He is the best and nicest professor I have ever had. The lecture is online and the quizzes are fairly easy but the labs are in person but they aren't too hard.
I love Kent! Great professor and one of the best ones I ever had. I took this class for the credit, but this guy is hilarious and very sweet! I enjoy his lectures they are fun and interesting. His quizzes are about 30 questions long (online) but pretty easy if you take notes in class. The labs are fun and easily graded, too. Amazing instructor! :D
recorded the worst lectures we have to watch and the test questions are about random things from the lecture that you wouldnt think would be on a quiz.
Hands down the best teacher I ever had. The online class involved watching and intently listening to 12 15minute PowerPoint presentations every two weeks and then a test. They were fast paced and filled with visualizations and anecdotes to help material stick. Kent is good at his job. Just watch these enjoyable videos and listen, no need for notes
He is my favorite professor I have ever had. He is so caring and is genuinely passionate about the topics he teaches. I wish there were more classes I could take with him, to have him as a professor again. I highly recommend this class due to the professor but also the interesting class topic. The quizzes were easy + open note, overall fun class!!!
Great lectures and great teacher! This class is not easy, you have to make time for 12 videos a week and a test every two weeks. It's not easy, but it's not difficult to do well in if you make time and you're accountable.
These are the most interesting, chill lectures I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Covers plenty of material about both dinosaurs and the modern world. I can't speak highly enough about the lectures. The tests and labs are both very easy.
Very accomodating and easy to reach out to. Interesting and clear lectures, although there were a few filler ones about whales and such. No homework, only graded by 8 open note quizzes total. He says the quizzes require understanding of the material, but they mostly require details from the lectures.
He is my most favorite lecturer I've ever had. Very knowledgeable, funny and concise. Offered extra credit and super responsive to a curve (we didn't need one) and lots of quizzes were dropped. Even the lab was spent playing with dragon figures or looking at cool bones. Definitely recommend!
nothing he seems chill
LOVE THIS PROF. He is so kind and funny! 2/7 quiz scores get dropped and he gives so many oportunities for EC. Lectures are interesting and he is passionate. I'm learning a lot and he gives you what you need to know for the quiz. Make sure you take GREAT notes. No HW but quizes are open notes and you will NEED IT if you want a good score!
I took his course for a Lib Ed and it was pretty easy. I don't really care about dinosaurs and the world but overall his online lectures were okay. Not a notable course overall but not too difficult. Labs were also pretty easy but I had a good TA.
Professor Kirkby was great for a simple lib ed. You have to pay real attention to the lectures to do well on the quizzes, but they're open note and some are dropped. I really appreciate his sense of humor, pretty dry but kept lectures interesting.
Genuinely the goat. Sends out so many reminders about the expectations for the week, and is so easy to work with when you need extensions or extra time. Very generous guy, even rounded my grade up at the end without even having to ask. Actually one of the nicest people on campus.
This man should be the blueprint of all professors. This course is so well organized, with such fun and interesting video lectures, and Kirkby is so caring with his reminders, and he's always sending out fun facts... Literally this man made my semester brighter despite me never even meeting him because of class modality. TAKE HIS COURSE!!!!!!!
Lectures were amazing. What a legend this man was.
