A truly great guy. He's fair, inspiring, and makes you think. Lectures are great and the reading is very well selected. He's a worldly guy with a love of language. He's taught some of the best classes I've ever had. Top NOTCH!
His class was both fun and frustrating. He's a very weird guy who has the coolest stories and lectures though he can get off onto a bit of a tangent and he is a philosophy teacher, so he himself never seems to know the answers to his own questions =)
He really knows his stuff. He seems hard, but he's fair. His honors classes are quite intense.
Great guy and great teacher! Lots of little writing assignments that can be kind of hard if you don't understand the material. That was probably the only irritating thing about the class, but this teacher really wants his students to do well.
by far one of the top 2 teachers i have ever had. in a way, this guy affected my entire life; kent richter is THE reason why i changed my major to philosophy and eventually acquired a bachelor's degree in philosophy. thank richter! you're one cool dude.
For a campus full of politically radical jerks who think the class is the place to push their far-Left agendas at taxpayer expense, Kent was a breath of fresh air. How'd he manage to get hired? HE HATES BILL CLINTON! He's cool.= )
Very challenging and thought-provoking. His self-depreciating humor cracked me up! Seems very up-tight at first, but ends up being very open-minded (not to the point at which his brains fell out, though...:-)
This guy is arrogant, ****, and small minded. He treats female students as if they have nothing important to say and only values the male opinions. He also teaches philosophy from a Christian's point of view which is innapropriate.
A lot of writing, but as long as you show you know the material and show up to class, it's an easy A. Great stories and sense of humor! I highly reccomend this teacher.
He's an understanding guy and teacher who makes it pretty easy for you to succeed in his class. The only thing I didn't like was that what I learned was mostly from doing my own research. He gets off on these tangents, wish he would stick to the subject.
This guy is awesome. His witty sense of humor and his ability to incorporate everyday life into the readings is incredible. There is a lot of writing, but I would highly recommend this teacher. (No final at the end of the quarter either).
Possibly one of my favorite teachers and should be yours too. He can make any class he teaches to be one of the best experiences in my life. My whole new perspective on philosophy is thanks to this teacher.
Highly recommend! No final!Go to class & do the assginments & U will be fine.I had no idea what I was doing in the class & managed to get a "B".If you hate philo. & need it for a prereq., just sit through the lecture. He's entertaining & U actuall
I agree with below. He's ****. He favors the males and treats the female students as inferior. He also tries to push his Republican, Christian beliefs down your throat, which I don't feel is appropriate. I mean, this isn't Wheaton College or a church. You don't think,he TELLS you what to think.
great teacher, a few bad jokes but very understanding. do the work and you will be fine. Gets a bit boring, but its the subject not the teacher
Not a hard class. Just listen to his lecture. Read and write a summary of a topic. I managed to get a "B" I didn't really know what i was talking about also in my papers. He is an understanding teacher and pretty funny. Would recommend anybody.
Whom ever believes that mr richter wasnt a fantastic teacher is seriously lacking intelligence. He can take a three hour lecture and make it feel like an hour if not less. His knowledge, which by the way is kept inside his head and not on a sheet of paper that some teachers cant live without, is i
This was the World Religions class. The professor rocked!
This professor favored the males in the class, and gave the female students low grades no matter what. The electronic exercises are hard to understand, half the links dont work, then you have to go try to find what you think he wants on the internet. I would not reccommend this teacher to anyone. His class was boring, and I dreaded going to it.
Very smart, very knowledgeable, has a good way of explaining concepts. Do the work with a little effort and the A is attainable. Highly recommended. The website has alot of errors, but not that hard to work around.
The best.
Very informative. Gives a fair shot to every student in class. Will push you to understand subject. Does have Christian background, but I, as an atheist, never felt imposed upon. We read Aquinas, Shankara, Nietzsche and Mill. Does that sound like a biased curriculum.
Very knowledgeable teacher. Very interesting class.
I liked hIm he was a cool teacher but he put you to sleep i felt like the class would never end, but it was pretty easy no tests!! only papers and notes
this guy is awesome!!
You should take his class! He's a great teacher with a good head on his shoulders. He's a Christian guy who's not biased about denominations and encourages people to make their own decision about what they believe. I don't think he favored the males ove
Excellent teacher looking forward to taking some more of his other classes
I don't know what that chick is talking about. Professor Richter is the best, and he treated both male and female students equally. He pushes you and makes you think, which is what philosophy is all about. He tells funny stories, and answers all your questions. Prof. Richter was one of the best Profs I've ever had. Take philosophy w/Kent Richter!!!
Great guy, interesting, knowledgable, personable, and even quirky.
Terrible, terrible professor. I tried to take this class with an open mind - dont understand how a man with a doctorate in philo can tell me to 'beware reductionism'. I wanted to learn about other religions,i learned very little. He likes to hear himslef talk. Good class if youre a christian, bad class if your 'other'.
I disagree with these negative comments. He got off topic a little, rarely it was a bit confusing, but he only encouraged us to think criticaly about all religions (and even atheism). Despite this he was respectful and intellegent, and if you go to his office hours, he is patient and helpful. Oh yeah Ph. D. from Stanford. What else can you ask for?
DO NOT take this class if you're any religion other than Christian. He explains every religion through a Xtian's eyes. If you were not brought up Xtian, what he says lacks context. He also makes a clear point of favoring Xtianity over all other religions, so you're bound to be offended when he covers what you belive. Totally innappropriate.
He is a great teacher. A lot of knowledge. He loves what he is teaching. He is so down to earth, and very funny.
this guy is a hippy. he's cool tho. take this class if you want an easy "A"
explains material as many times and as clearly as possible. jokes around, but mostly you laugh at him. i know the guy personally and will occasionally disagree with him, but he's never insulting and is receptive to a couter argument. papers are graded by how many points you can cover from class.
Boring teacher..EXTRA BORING!!!!
Kent Richter is extremely funny and helpful. He gets everyone involved in class and teaches the material. He is very objective and always challenges us to think. Highly recommended.
He is a great guy. The class could cover topics better and in more depth, but I understand that the very nature of the class is introductory.
Great teasher, Fun class
Great teacher, for sure take his classes!
took the asian religion class. great teacher! too bad he teaches just a few specific courses. would love to take some more advanced and in depth classes with him
Very cool teacher, great class. He exudes confidence in what he is teaching - this guy knows his stuff. His lectures are never boring. Tests are not easy, but not impossibly difficult, either. Great prof!
He is a really good teacher. He isn't bias towards one religion, and I dont think he acts any different towards females then males. He has few assignments, so if you are not good at keeping track of a schedule, it might be difficult for you.
Great teacher, pretty funny and incredibly random. Took him for Intro to Philo which I thought was a kinda hard class. You must write 4 of 6 papers. Copying notes from the board might be difficult because he has terrible handwriting! He doesn't take attendence and you never get out early.
gets off topic alot and secind guesses himself during lectures. if you dont know what your saying than how can your students?
Took his class freshman year at cod, back in fall of 06. Lol, he's so weird, but because of his weird personality he's also funny. Actually no, lol he's pretty hilarious, some of the things he told us was, rofl... just wow. Class was awesome, you NEED to read the books though. Tests & quizes are straight out of the reading.
Funny guy, fair, understanding, lectures well organized and informative, assignments useful, not biased. Took as honors section. In assignments do more than you think he's expecting, he grades a little difficult, but definitely doable.
he is a great teacher. the grading is too tough. i got all B eventhough i worked hard.but it is a nice class and i really enjoy that.
kent is amazing. Anyone who doubts him does not truly know him.
Probably one of the nicest instructors at cod. I've never had an interest in religion until debating with him in class during phil 1100. I think his class requires relatively minimal work. 4 Papers , 25 One page note summaries - I did my work - got an A.
Kent... As in Clark Kent. Wow, whats this? a 10 on the Richter Scale, I didnt even know that was possible. He is a peculiarly stringent grader
Good teacher, but I'm never sure when he's telling a story if it's true or not.
took his Phil 1100 over the summer, and taking his 1150 for fall. if your into phil or religion you will enjoy him. didnt really read his books, just pay attention in class and you will be fine. so so on the grading but got an A without extra credit(which he offers). no real tests, just papers throughout the semester.
Kent is the BEST teacher I've ever had. He knows what he's talking about and loves religion. I have even taken multiple classes with him. I've learned so much from his classes. I saw some not-so-nice comments on here. Do not listen to them. He is awesome!
The class was very interesting but at times the lectures were kind of boring. When he was asked a question who would never really give an answer. He would think for about twenty minutes and not answer the question. He never liked to give A's on assignments, he would usually give high B's. Do the extra credit to boost the B.
Lectures are excruciatingly boring, he loves to hear himself talk. Took little to zero notes, got B's on papers I wrote at 3am, did the out of class project and worked hard on the final powerpoint and got an A. Rarely takes attendance. Bought crosswords everyday; it was the only thing that made this class interesting.
Ok so here is the deal, I took his class online - It's pretty easy. Only 3 papers for the entire semster. test for each unit and discussion questions. He replies quickly and the material was really interesting. However, I would say as mentioned that he tries to push his beliefs and put down yours. Like "I know better BC of my PHD" type of attitude.
I don't know if attendance is mandatory or not, but if you don't go you're the one missing out. He's a tough grader, but extra credit is always available. The subject matter tough, but he always makes it far more than marginally interesting. He asked for 6 papers, but drops the worst 2, and other than that you just turn in homework. No tests.
Prof. Richter is a amazing teacher. He is a true scholar of the three Abrahamic religions and is hilarious. I learned so much about the these religions and defiantly recommend this class and professor to anyone interested in religion.
He is very intelligent and challenges you to reason why you believe what you believe. His lectures are interesting, and he has a good sense of humor. It helps to take detailed class notes since he has high standards, but you can get A's on his essays if you use your class notes and show critical thinking. He is approachable and sometimes, lenient.
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. Extremely intelligent and hillarious. He really makes class fun and interesting. You dont' have to worry about falling asleep. His essays aren't hard to but are challenging enough. It's almost impossible to fail this class as long as you apply yourself with adequate effort and interest.
I've taken two of his classes now, and professor Richter is a fun and interesting teacher to have. He'll generally assign 2-4 major papers, and if you work hard on them you can expect to get within a 88-92 range. It's all very valuable, practical and fun information (though not so much career-wise, as he'll tell you himself!)
Encyclopedic knowledge about religions. I've never seen this guy read from notes. Funny, energetic, understanding, and thought provoking. This ones a real gem of a teacher.
A genious on religious studies. Has die hard intelligence. Very hillarious. No excuse to dose off. Very easy homework and essays are not difficult but challenging enough. You will learn a lot and might just execute an introspection of your belief. Trust me, you will inadvertantly be checked on your views but you wll love it!! Awesome teacher!!
Dr Richter was a great professor to start off my college career with. He was challenging, almost unforgiving, on assignments leading up to the end. However there is definately a soft spot in him and will more than likely give you a good grade. Give him your best and he'll give you his best. Take this class but take it seriously.
interesting class. very knowledgable. notes due every class period(25 total). 4 papers to write out of the 6 chapters discussed. there is extra credit. make sure to ask at the beginning of class. you can only do one per week and the points help out because he really is as someone said "unforgivable" but a great guy overall. it's a hard class though
Richter is a great teacher and he very helpful and kind. He is the person to raise a logical argument with and have a religious discussion or share any religious concerns.
Helpful, but got off track a lot.
Cool teacher. Class was informative, but not the class I expected going into it. Had to write 2 small essays and 1 research paper. Tests are short and mostly multiple choice.
very insightful
Dr. Richter is a a god among men, keenly intelligent and compassionate. He needs to upgrade the cookies in his office, but his open door policy and patient explanations of tricky concepts amount to an epic win.
awesome teacher. Highly recommended. He offers help constantly & explains topics in class thoroughly. I enjoyed his class & hope to take another. Great for people not very interested in philosophy, as long as you attend class. Very funny, too. Class involves a lot of reading, but easy to keep up with & only 4 required papers with 6 topic options.
Great teacher. Very helpful. Gives handouts for each paper. No tests or final. You only have to do 4 out of 6 papers and write 25 "article notes" on readings. I definitely recommend him for philosophy
He is kind of boring at first... then he starts to make some jokes if you go to him offace and ask for help he will give you whats on the test..shhhh our little secret but anyway he is a good guy and cares for his students the only home work is like 4 papers the whole time... i did nothing in that class. oh ya! he doesnt really care about attendice
If you find Dr. Richter's classes to be boring, that says much more about your failings than his. Fantastic professor, takes tricky concepts and conveys them understandably. Good-natured, humorous. Don't take the class if you don't really want to be there - you may get away with that in other disciplines, but not this one.
The only thing I can complain about this guy is he's topicky when it comes to your way of writing and the information you put forth in your essays. I took him for online and it was difficult--despite passing with a C, he's way of wanting us to understand things can become annoying. Even though he's a nice guy, I don't recommend this teacher at all!
Prof Richter is great. He's very intelligent and presents very good points, keeps you interested in the material. Takes attendance for the first week but thats it. You have to write 4/6 papers, no tests or quizzes. If you do all 25 article notes at the beggining of the semester you can pretty much not go to class for the rest of the semester.
I love this teacher! He's really funny and makes a lot of jokes, however he is very passionate about the topic. We didn't get to the book of Revelation because he was willing to go over any questions we had and go into depth. I only had to pay attention in class and I did well in the class. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HIM AS A TEACHER! You won't regret it.
Definitely an intelligent professor. He is not an easy grader but he is passionate about what he does and he is a nice guy.
Very interesting class overall. Professor Richter is very passionate about religion and teaches it very well. He is a bit of a hard garder for the essays, but as long as you try and show up to class you'll do fine. Overall he's a great guy with a sense of humor.
Funny Guy. Pretty cool, i'd go to class just to listen. You should try on the essays cause theyre a lot of your grade. He tells you whats on the test (study guide) (or just study your notes). So take him!
Super funny guy. Admitted to us he used to be a traveling hippie or something along those lines but he teaches very well just go to all the classes. i only needed to book a few times but it does help to have it availble even if you just barrow it. but watch out he grades kind of hard. if you try hard you'll end up with a good grade tho.
Brilliant man. You can tell he has the light of the Universe in his eyes whenever he talks about philosophy. Funny. He has a very refreshing open door policy, and encourages you to have lunch with him, or even take him out for a beer. One of my favorite professors so far.
Richter is a great professor. The only complaint I have is that he is pretty biased towards christianity, which can be both good and bad. But otherwise if your looking for an easy A and want to have fun debating about God, this is def the class for you.
Kent is very passionate about what he teaches, but grades fairly harsh. So be prepared when you write papers.
Professor Richter is definitely passionate about philosophy. His lectures are interesting and he keeps them upbeat by connecting them to his life stories. He always offers his help in any of the assignments. There is a fair amount of writing in this class and one quiz and a group presentation. He is a tough grader on the papers, so edit beforehand.
I took this class honors. Great professor, and the lectures are quite fun and enlightening. The books aren't mandatory, but it does help to maybe skim through the assigned readings for a better understanding. One easy homework assignment, 4 papers, no tests/quizzes.
I took Professor Richters online Intro to Religion Class. I found the class very interesting and enlightening. However, as others have stressed, he is very critical when grading papers, so make sure you take your time and just don't throw something together. Overall, great course. I especially enjoyed the personal field trip portion of the class.
Very funny, keeps you on your toes, and broadens your perspectives on Ethics. Made going to class fun and keeps you entertained! Loved this class!!! Mr. Richter - You asked what you had to do to get a chilly pepper, here you go sir, just for you! =) Awesome semester!
If you are interested in philosophy, for the love of God, take this man's class. He has this brilliant light of the Universe behind everything he says, and his passion is certainly reflected in his teaching. He challenges students to think critically, and has a great open door policy. Great guy, even better professor. Fully, fully recommend.
Awesome lectures. I took a his class over the summer going two days a week for 3hrs each day and was not bored. There is homework readings and 4 papers to write but no tests. Highly recommend his class.
Awesome teacher! Barely read any of the readings and still got good grades. Discussions aren't extremely easy or clear but only because philosophy is that kind of subject. Pretty funny teacher, you WILL want to show up to class! Wrote 3 papers, 2 debates, and several short fill in the blank handouts. Not super easy but worth it if it interests you.
He is a great professor. He gives good comments on your papers. He makes you think about what you are learning. He is a little harder then the other profs in his department. It takes a good bit of work to get an A on one of his assignments.
Really interesting info. Had to do four papers (5-8ish pages). Grades really critically, but is fair. Class can be kind of boring, but make sure you participate for points, and he is pretty funny at times. Learned a lot. Doing the readings really helps with papers so don't neglect that or just try to read some of it.
Prof. Richter is a an awesome teacher. I recommend this class and professor to anyone interested in religion or that needs it as a requirement. As a plus he is hysterical. Pay attention and you'll go good in the class. Tests are super easy and papers are your opinion. Just expected to take a stance.
Took his New Testament class. A lot of reading, but you don't really need to do all of it. 3 tests, 4 essays. Grades kinda harshly but offers extra credit. You should study the notes he gives pretty well and the study sheet, readings always help with essays. Love this guy--super brilliant! Always available for extra help too. Take him!!!
Great teacher, simple as that. He's funny, intelligent, and reasonable. I don't see how anybody could complain about this professor.
Lectures are great. If you're taking an intro to philosophy class I would definitely recommend taking his class
He is god awful. He thinks he's funny, you'll feel sorry for him. He is VERY boring and just keeps talking. He makes no sense, and goes off topic alot. He talks fast, you won't understand. All he says is "Whipper Snapper". id rather get attacked by a giraffe than take him again.
He talks to much. He is always off topic. REALLY, REALLY, and did I mention RELLY BORING. The only thing I liked about him was that we didn't have to take a final
His online class is tough, I mean very tough. No matterhow much you read the text its just hard. Being a student who is geting all As in other courses I just cant explain to even my self where Im going wrong. online tests are obviously timed. He gives 30 mins for 30 QUESTIONS. and all of them arent MCQs but you have to type answers.
Super-clear professor - all you have to do is raise your hand and ask, or see him outside of class. He's very nice and really understanding. Great professor for first year in college. All you have to do is talk to him.
All he does is sits up at the front and talks, quiz's are take home and are hard and like 4 papers. You have to work for it...I was boarder line a AB and I did all EC which idk if it will be there for other semesters because it was like lectures and stuff of him speaking, do the extra maps, and do all the quizzes. Only buy his book
I took this class online and it was pretty easy as long as you did your job of reading the textbook and completing all the assignments that are due. Grading was not tough. I got an A in the class. You will have quizzes after each chapter and a discussion. There are only 2 essays for the entire class. I would recommend this class to others.
In my opinion, great professor. Sure, he can get extremely boring at times (he likes to talk and often rambles) but he gives out 12 or 13 take home quizzes that are fine as long as you can read the 4-9 pages assigned. He also has you turn in three papers throughout the semester. Extremely nice guy, sometimes boring, but makes funny jokes.
Critical thinking is essential. He pushes you to reach higher with your thinking, expects nothing less than your best and will give you feedback for every discussion board post and written assignment until he sees you succeed. Proactive in communication. Pay close attention, he's a great professor who values growth. One of my favorites here at COD.
Lecture notes are not very helpful as the info written is hard to comprehend. Quizzes are hard as there is limited time and questions are misleading/info not from lecture nor book. Too much work for a 100 level class.
Lots of reading, worth it though, really helps with lectures. Fantastic lectures, so informative, no presentations- just an expo marker, makes it so much more engaging and he really knows and cares about the information presented. Quirky dude, really enjoyed his classes.
I thought the class would be simple, although, I found it actually quite challenging. The quizzes go really in depth. If you are not motivated to read every page and all lecture notes, do not take this course.
He didnt round me up .04%. missed one quiz and he didn't let me retake it.
I think Prof. Richer would be great to take on campus, but not online. Challenging discussions and yes he is very knowledgeable and inspirational. However, papers assigned would ALWAYS require additional research. In my opinion NOT 100 level class. Take it if PHILO is something you are interested in, otherwise look for other options.
This class felt like it was a class for those with a major in philosophy. There was a lot of reading to do and there were discussion boards where he would argue with someone's point of view on the topic. The papers required extra research and for one of the papers we had to go to a religious establishment and write a paper on it.
Prof Richter is a great Professor. PERIOD I only got a B in his class but it was a good class as I had to take for Depaul. He challenges you on the blackboard discussions, as he should! He gives you great feedback too! Sure, there are tests, some essays to write, even a field trip to a religious place, which at first I wasnt crazy, but it was cool.
funny, keeps things interesting, pushes you to think outside of the box
Lectures are kind of boring sometimes, doesn't care what you do as long as you are respectful towards everyone else. 12 take home quizzes and 3 papers, the final is basically a big quiz. Makes you buy 2 books, but only the small one matters.
Professor Richter is a great teacher. He is passionate about Religion, and enjoys teaching his students about it. He is critical on grading essay papers, but gives good feedback. He encourages participation, and is easy to approach. Lectures are helpful, but you'll really need to read the material to pass the quizzes. Very interesting teacher!
He was a very funny and fun professor, 10/10 would take his class again. The beginning of the semester if very easy and smooth, but at the end of the semester there are a few essays that overlap. You do need to go visit a religious establishment and write your experience. And the book isn't required but is it very helpful to study off of.
Professor Richter is a good professor but he does expect a lot out of you. I wouldn't recommend taking Relig-1150 over the summer because there is a lot of assignments and reading in just an 8 week period. He is very accessible for help but do be prepared for him to play devils advocate for all your discussion board responses/papers you submit.
I took his hon philo class. You need 4 books & there r 4 take home quizzes, and 4 papers (no test).I can say without a doubt tht this professor is one of the best I've ever had. He cares about students success & involvement in the class. u need to attend & participate; but if you're shy, talk 2 him after class 4 participation credits. He's AMAZING!
He was a difficult professor to take. He hated when anyone would take out their phones. On one occasion Professor Richter told us all to go to hell and then left class 25 minutes early. The homework is worth 5 points but it would be in your best interest to complete each one thoroughly, he is a tough grader. Overall I would never recommend him.
This is definitely a class you have to keep up with. There are 6 quizzes and 4 papers (with optional extra credit.) 3 of the 4 papers are due at the end of the term. There is a quiz after each section. Mr. Richter gives great feedback with everything, but is definitely a tough grader! His class really makes you think.
Such an amazing professor!! Before his class I hated philosophy but by the end of the semester I had found a new passion for it. His lectures are so thought provoking and he clearly presents very difficult concepts. Enjoyed his lectures so much I took him again for religion. Would definitely recommend!!
Slow replies to emails, unclear grading criteria, not much feedback given.
You work out of a book he wrote, but I believe his book offers great insight and is unbiased. He likes to play devil's advocate but when he does, it makes you think. He's not doing it to be an ass. I actually learned a lot from this class. Due dates are not 11:59 pm, they're 5 pm. The best advice I can give is to be a critical thinker in this class
