Excellent teacher, but course requires max. effort
Interesting class, easy to watch.
super nice gut, but tends to be REALLY long winded.
MMM Kay! This guy is fun.
AWESOME prof...funny too!
Fun and very beautiful to look at!
Very enthusiastic about topics covered. Its good to keep ontop of textbook reading to supplement though.
great prof
ok prof. MUST read textbook to supplement lecture. suprisingly tricky tests. Asks unexpected material.
Exellent prof he is easy to learn from. He is extremely clear when he teaches. Also very funny. Take his bio and human concerns.
he's a giant ****. doesn't prepare you for his test questions. most answers to test questions couldn't even be found in the textbook. looks like Einstein but is far from it!!
Great guy. No complaints
Beautiful to look at?!???? Kent? Simmons?? The baldy with the pot and the acid wash jeans?
funny guy.....really easy to understand. Uses great examples to help you understand the info. Read the text thouroughly before the exam!!!! GOOD PROFF
very tricky tests - unexpected questions, not very fair. other than that pretty good and spunky
want the A?? DO one thing: READ and FOCUS ON YOUR TEXTBOOK ONLY. His tests r tricky to many people because he asks things directly in the book people overlook, so devote yourself and you'll do great :)
If i found bio interesting i'm sure i woulda done a lot better, he's a great guy, he'll tell jokes and dont even get me started on that cane toad movie.. ohh.. that was great haha. Exams are hard to study for though.
This guy is terrible. Explicitly denotes "this will not be on the final" only to PUT it on the final. Cannot teach. terrible jokes. Doesn't even have a PhD; see, THAT'S a joke. Unfair, unkind and not helpful.
This says it all: Course average-- 52%!!!
Eccellent Prof, And HE DOES HAVE A PHD, obviously you didnt take the time to research that huh? Very helpful Proff, Excellent attitude
I had a great time in his class.
I thought Simmons was a great prof. He is very clear, explains things very well, and his tests are fair. The lecture material is also very interesting.
This guy should be the head of the biology department.
Bio Nazi.
It's simple. Go to class, read the text and do the quiz on the cd. That's all i've done and my 92% is holding strong.
Very helpful, sounds like Ned Flanders. Easy class if you are an arts student looking for a science credit.
The Cane Toad, it's a classic!! Excellent prof, relevant material, good delivery. I really enjoyed his class. He knows he only teaching this so that Arts students can get a science credit, but he really makes you think about the material. Now that's the mark of a good prof. The cane toad aargh!
Read text first! Then watch the class. Lectures are good way to back up readings but readings are more important on the exam. And he is funny! In a bio-nerdy kinda way.
Very good bio professor. He understands the people in class are only filling their requirement and probably aren't scientific geniuses. Was extremely clear and thorough during lectures. He finished off with the cane toad movie which is one of the best things I have ever seen. Highly recommended.
If you do your readings and pay attention to what he is asking, this is an easy course. Even though this was an online course, he was attentive enough (sometimes your email questions dont get answered for days). Ideally designed for arts students looking to get some of their science credit hours for their degree.
This guy is awesome...knows that 99% of people taking this course are only there to fulfill the science requirement. Lectures were super clear and he's so enthusiastic that it helped even when the lectures were about something boring. Exams were definitely easy as long as you studied and went to class. Really nice guy too. Definitely recommended.
He's an awesome prof, he made bio interesting and easy to understand. He made me want to come to class every day.
Super Prof! very clear, thorough, and makes class interesting. On top of which i can just watch class at home on TV. Tests are totally reasonable, since I DO study.
highly recommended. all his lecture notes can be found online and exams are easy if you put a little effort into it. hardest part of this course is the lab exams
A great professor. He knows his stuff and he is excited to teach it. He will happily go over any questions you have even if it digresses from the current lecture topic. His excitement in class is really contagious. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!!!
AMAZING PROF. Best prof i've had so far. Keeps your intrest during lecture, is hilarious, and very organized. His notes are available over the internet and all on power point. He is an excellent teacher and really knows his stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Excellent prof, good sense of humour and is knowledgeable and willing to help. The only problem is all the power points and lectures seem to be exactly paralleled in the textbook. I skipped alot of classes and still did really well. All you need is the textbook so... he teaches great if you need the teaching. Otherwise the text is enough.
He was really nice and tried to make his class interesting, but i found that he jumped around with his class notes and just confused me...
Wonderful lectures. Told everything like a story--very interesting. You can't fall asleep in this class. Only 2 tests, so if you mess up, you are screwed. Definitely would take any course with him.
Great guy! Keeps class interesting and you involved. Helps you understand the material so you don't have to study it out of the text yourself. HIGHLY recommend taking intro bio with him. Pretty easy to do well in his class!
Great prof. Loves the material, and helps you to understand it like no one else could. I'd hate to have taken this class with anyone else. Approachable and helpful, and a fountain of knowledge. Makes you want to take all his other classes.
Excellent professor. He makes the material come alive, generally creating amusing solutions for memorizing dull material. Supplements the lectures with videos, info about common biological practices, etc.
So funny, and alot of fun, his exams are fair but you need to study, all his notes and stuff is online so you dont have to go to class.
Great professor for sparking your interest in the field of Biology... Really down to earth. He plays classic rock at the beginning of every class and I see him at the gym all the time. Friendly, prompt, enthusiastic, and easygoing.
Prof was good up until i notice he ignores certain people when they have questions. Dont know whether its personal or he just doesnt realize
Registered for the in class section but just watched every lecture online and was still able to get an A. As long as you watch every lecture and actually understand what hes talking about u dont really need to read the text book, and you'll be fine for exam. He doesnt put anything on exam thats not in his lecture.
Who thought that someone could make algae, fungi, and mosses interesting? I was dreading taking this course and then was turned around completely on the first day of class. As I said, he makes AFM fun, and thats a tough thing to do! Great, fun prof. Great lab instructor too
Favourite class! No assignments, 4 multiple choice exams, and you can watch all lectures online. Lectures were very interesting and clear. Didn't need the textbook.
Good professor! Made Alage,Fungi & Mosses interesting. Very understanding - I slept in for a midterm and he let me write it the next day, no marks taken off! Tests and exams are very fair.
Kept class very interesting. He makes every theory into a story which makes things easier to remember on exams. HIGHLY recommend this prof. He made me a bio fan.
he's very expressive and loves metaphors!!!
Very good prof, funny and interesting. Exam was hard but fair, as long as you read the lecture notes online. Wasn't really necessary to go to class
very good kept me interested and it was an evening class for 3 hours.
Very good at explaining concepts. Everything makes perfect sense in class but the problem is, there is a heavy load of content to cover so be prepared to do a lot of work outside of class. Midterm and final exams are all multiple choice. Most marks are lost in labs! Not an easy A but work hard and it'll pay off.
Very nice guy, covers concepts well. Makes class interesting. Likes to joke around. all exams are fairly easy, multiple choice. I never bought my textbook, just watched the video, looked at the power points and lecture notes and was totally fine.
This man knows his stuff. Excellent professor, explains concepts well. The course itself is loaded with content so be sure to read the textbook. All questions are multiple choice so focus on reading the questions carefully because most lecture marks are lost on misinterpreting the questions. Bio lab exams were brutal. Good luck!
The first portion of the class is hard (Fungi/Mosses/Etc...) but that's his field, so his lectures really clear up the information you learn in the labs. Dr. Simmons posts his PowerPoints and his own lecture notes on WebCT. He also teaches the online courses, so his videos are available to those taking in-class sections too! GREAT PROF!
Excellent professor. He made my entire year awesome!
Really passionate prof and knows his stuff. However, he's very dry and the exams in my class were all multiple choice and were pretty tricky.
He is extremely dry. He doesn't update his notes since before taxonomy changed. He doesn't have any pauses in teaching to ask questions. He doesn't have any dynamic. He is very passionate about his subject but he would benefit from a how to engage students course. He ignores hands that are raised because he is lost in his information.
This guy is true professor. His lectures are comprehensive and his knowledge level of his subjects are extreme. Never have I had a professor that so accurately prepares you for what is expected of you. His multiple choices arent tricks but if you arent familiar with the material you will find all multiple choices "tricky". 5's across the board.
A great prof! Does such a great job teaching I genuinely love going to this class. If you take this class take it with Simmons!!
Awesome professor. I would recommend him to anyone taking first year biology. Makes concepts very clear and easy to understand, very approachable, easy to listen to. I would take classes with him again.
Good Prof! Makes class interesting and is helpful. Exams are hard and tricky, but overall good prof.
Dr Kent Simmons is an outstanding professor! He has a lot of passion and it shows in his lectures! He motivated me and I really enjoy how clear he makes everything! But you have to pay attention because his classes are in the biology field so there are endless terms and memorization. I would highly recommend him
Makes things easy to understand but if you don't put in the extra effort to understand subjects and answer questions you wont get a very good grade. He is very kind and funny so makes the morning class worth it. One of the best profs I've had so far.
Awesome prof! Clearly loves what he does. Shows much enthusiasm when he teaches. Very friendly and always willing to help! Can speak rather fast and go off on tangents, but overall one of my favourite profs.
Simmons is the hardest but the best of the first year bio profs and teaches in a way that makes you more prepared for second year
Very clear lectures and very approachable. Caught myself falling asleep in his morning lectures so be sure to drink lots of coffee! Gave me great advice when I needed it. Going to be taking another course with him this year (but I'm still bringing coffee).
Not always clear. He rambles a lot.
He rabbles know your text book and your good his lectures are a waste of time you could use study the text.
While its true that his tests are hard (like start studying at the beginning of the semester, seriously though). He's really funny. While I said class is mandatory to passing this class (which, it is) he lets this in-class classes use the videos that he uses for his VOD lectures. Would 100% take a another class with him.
Old school teaching style. No exam review. Entire chapters in text are testable but doesn't even touch major topics in the lecture(that are testable) - lack of direction that's needed for intro-Bio courses. Exams are hard, need to at least skim through entire chapters to get an A+. Would take 2nd/3rd yr courses from him again but not intro courses.
He provides all the info you need to do well on tests, except a select few that weren't discussed at all in class. He explains things well. Lectures are super boring though, lots of info in that course. Spent lots of time on photosynthesis and cell. resp. and barely was tested. find him a little rude in emails. also stood me up on an office apt.
Good prof, very knowledgable on subject, even though AMF was one of the more boring botany courses I took. He is easy to approach and can answer all of your questions. No textbook.
Had good clear notes which he also posts online. Lectures that could have been very dull were interesting. I would definitely recommend reading the textbook though, some questions on the exams were taken directly from it. I would definitely take a course with him again.
Very interesting lectures due to his passion and knowledge about biology. Exam is REALLY HARD. I studied a lot and felt well prepared and still failed. PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS, especially the examples he uses, because thats what will be on the exam. Multiple choice exam but 75% of the options seem like they could be correct.
He's a good guy but honestly not the greatest prof. He's unclear and jumps from topic to topic, the power points almost never are relevant to the notes. His tests are super hard.
Excellent professor! Very detailed but uses many analogies to assist with comprehension and memory. He has a great and positive energy. Highly recommended.
Amazing lectures and makes material easy to understand. I love the fact that he gives access of lecture recordings even to non-VOD classes. If you are clear on the concepts, like any course, the tests will be easy ( you still need to study! :p). I re-registered my bio class for next term on purpose so that I'm taking it again with prof. Simmons.
He's a hype guy with very distinct stylistic and music choices, however if you need powerpoints with more than just vague diagrams and non-descriptive text, you might want to reconsider. I will note that he does have some helpful study guides, but I probably will avoid him in the future.
I would describe Dr. Simmons' lecture style as "taking a running start at biology". Although there are many topics discussed in this course that are covered in a typical high school biology curriculum, he nevertheless provides you with the resources to be successful regardless of your background. I highly recommend you have him for this course.
Great prof overall. You can tell that he is very knowledgable about the material, and he is always willing to answer any questions that you may have. Although, I found that reading the textbook really helped me understand the concepts more thoroughly. Tests were fair and he was very clear about what we would be tested on. Highly recommend!
Hands down, the best lecturer I've ever had. He makes material super easy to understand. I passed the course with an A without even touching the textbook, which is a testament to how much of an excellent teacher he is. His tests are brutal but his study guidelines, notes and access to VOD lectures were helpful.
his lectures are very interesting and he definitely knows his stuff, but wow his exams are an absolute nightmare. I studied very hard and failed his exams. If you aren't good at multiple choice exams, don't take his class. He will give 5 multiple choice answers and 4 of the 5 sound like the same answer. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS.
he is by far the best biology prof I ever had at uofw!! i totally recommend him. tests were fair. had him for both bio 1115&1116.
