Kerri is strict but very fair to her students. WARNING the workload is incredible in this class. Take it alone of with an easy class. She is approachable for assistance, and she is a fun teacher.
Discussion of her sexuality is sure to arise... in the English class. I approached her after class about a concern I had about two eng/lit classes I was taking at the same time and she replied with a short,snippy, attitude filled comment. AVOID HER CLASS!
Probably the worst teacher i had at RVC. She didn't teach me anything at all. She was continously rude and did not care about her students at all. She seemed like she was only there for the pay check.
Not a bad teacher, but exactly the kind i dont like. The curriculum is very simple and easy, but she grades tough. I am not learning anything and the class is challenging, not a good combination.

If you hate her as a teacher, try being her friend. She is a bit difficult but ok if you get to know her and can make her laugh. No time for idiots though, and really that should be an admirable quality. Shes just so passionate that it gets in the way of her teaching effectiveness.

This is a difficult class. I got through it by paying VERY close attention to the discussions, giving me the ability to write A papers. Kerri expects that you be an accomplished writer, and that is very important. Keep up on your journal entries, it'll help you with writing the papers. I liked her.
the worst prof that i have had at rock valley. i didnt learn anything from the class. she takes things that are easy and makes them confusing then laughs and humiliates you when you dont understand (in front of class). avoid her at all costs.
Has an attendence policy that she can't even follow. Is constantly behind on the material and gave an in depth research paper assignment two weeks before it is due. Spends the entire classes yapping about what I felt was nothing. LIKE OTHERS HAVE SAID AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

Kerri Shaw, how do I say this? Is really mean. I was so excited about taking English this year. I loved it in High school, and couldn't wait to see what it'd be like in college. I'm in Kerri's 101 class, and let's just say....English is now my least favorite class. She makes me feel bad about myself and my work.
Kerri Shaw is really...umm... mean! She's so crabby and rude and puts you down. If she has stress, she shouldn't bring that to work with her. You're basically on your own in this class...because nothing is explained! This is my least favorite class, thanks to her.."help"
I took her ENG 103 class, and it was very hard. The hardest part was the annotated bibliography which required detailed information about 10 different sources! I had to drop the class. She also rants in class a lot, and if you disagree with her... well, just don't.
Very good teacher. Knows her stuff and if you need help all you have to do is ask for it! Dont get on her bad side i.e. show that you care about the class and put forth effort! I strongly urge you to take this class if you can!
Bad teacher... try to get any other english teacher besides her. She is mean and likes to ridicule students for asking questions and doesn't show up for class on time.

Kerri Shaw is completely essentric. Your best interest is to stay away from this woman. I was in a 7 A.M. class, and count it that she has not shown up to class more than 5+ times. She also does not post content on ednet that she says she would post. My aunt used to teach at RVC and she ridicules Shaw about how she returns assignments after 2 wks

She cancels class alot. She doesn't make the material interesting. I found this class a complete waste of my time.
Very poor 'teacher to student' connection, makes me feel unwanted and stupid. Also very little attempt to help with papers, and or other problems.
Cancelled class ten times 3/4 of the way through the semester. She got so many complaints to her advisors that she was forced to take "sick leave." Does not teach, just tells you what the topic of the paper is. Grades very hard.
She missed over 50% of the semester and finally so many people complained they put her on medical leave and gave us a new teacher. When she was there she was mean and unpleasent. On our first summery paper 90% of the class got a c or below and she said we should have cited every sentence? She was the worst teacher I ever had!

This woman is hands down the worst instructor I've ever had... ever. She has an attendance policy that she can't even follow and, for someone who supposedly hates excuses, she seems to make quite a few of them. I'm one of maybe 3 people in the class that is actually passing right now because she is ineffective in teaching & grading. NEVER TAKE HER!
She is probably the worst teacher i have ever had. The papers are pointless, and topics are very narrow. We are only allowed to use our book as a source. I would NOT recommend her!

The instructor was very clear on the subject matter. Often the problem were infrequent use of the board. Take notes, listen and ask plenty of questions. Open a book in the library or research material online. Work with a study group, I would recommend it. Dont join a bandwagon against her, shes doing her job.

Completely hypocritical, inconsistent, and down right malicious. She has an attendance policy, but I can guarantee you'll show up more then her. Thinks she knows everything..and refuses to budge from a belief. Exactly what a teacher shouldn't be like :( Stay far, far away.
Worst Professor ever, I did everything this prof. asked and it was never good enough. I met with her class, and in my spare time to get help, and she still would mark stuff off that she ok'ed before. I would do all her assignments the way she asked, and she would mark me off for stuff that i did. and she wouldn't explain her reasoning. Worst prof.
Professor Shaw has made me a much better writer and organizer. The many papers in ENG-103 are quite difficult but if you want to be a more rounded writer take her class.
Professor Shaw is a great teacher but she is the slowest grader on the face of the earth, and lets her cats walk on my papers. Not to mention she has misplaced two of my essays. She is ice cold in her appearence and smells like an ash tray. NO JOKE!
Prof Shaw is the best! She makes it easy to write well. It is collge so its always up to the student to do well. she will help as much, she is great at explaining and sitting down with the students in need..Even a person who dislikes to write can get an A in this class.
I would never recommend this teacher! Her papers are very lengthy and no matter how many questions I asked about the paper content I never got any better than a C! Even when I asked her what was wrong with my papers she couldn't even give me a good reason for the bad grade I got! Bottom line do not take her you will forever regret it!
First imprseeions of Prof. Shaw were intimidating other than her stature. She's very cut and dry and leaves no wiggle room or questions as to what she expects out of her assignments. She is very helpful, but only if you want to put in the effort to learn. She will not do your work for you. I earned my grade here and learned alot along the way.
Ok yes she is kind of tough but...if you don't put forth the effort then of course your grade will be low. Ask questions, make use of one on one office time, use the writing center. If I did all of the I would have had a higher grade. I could have done better if I wasn't being lazy. She is upfront that she grades slow I can accept that.
Best class I had this semester. She's a pretty tough grader, but she's also EXTREMELY clear on what she expects. Always willing to help if you have questions, and always makes time during class to answer questions. The subjects you have to write on could stand to be a little more interesting though.
I have been in college over 6 years and never had an experience like Shaw. She's extremely political and she brings that into her class. She grades on gender, sexuality, and politics. One day she walked into class demanding that someone debate her in gun control. I did and won. She threw her papers all over the class, screamed, and walked out!
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had. She picks the worst topics, for instance, I am currently writing a 4-6 page paper on a Student Service at RVC. How terrible is that!? I have no interest in writing about this, so how am I supposed to produce a good paper?? Do yourself a favor and find a different professor for this class.

I loved prof. Shaw. She isn't a tough grader. Hardly tried on papers and usually got a B or A. There are 4 papers and no tests or final. Explains things well gives you tons of time to work on stuff in class, and she walks around the room to check on everyone. She is pretty understanding, nice and helpful. I didn't like topics of some papers.
I tried to like her. She was clearly not going to take bull, she was passionate about discussion, and she seemed like a pretty good person. After I told her how I was struggling with untreated depression (I have no money or support to help), things started to go downhill. I was struggling to keep up, so I asked for help, she told me to grow up.
She was not that bad of a teacher. I liked her sense of humor because it was really dry and sarcastic. She is willing to help you with your papers if you ask her. She is very passionate about the topics she discusses in class. She is not a hard grader at all. I ended up getting A's and B's on all of my papers. I recommend her.

Kerri expects her students to read instructions and listen in class. If you respect her (even if you don't agree with her), listen to her instructions, and do the work that is required of you an A is a good bet. She does have some dry humor and can come off wrong but in all she is a good teacher.

She grades very tough so don't expect to get higher than a C on any paper. She tells you to add parts into your paper and then marks them wrong as unnecessary details. I repeat don't take her ever.
Tried to like her. Talked about things that were not relevant. Going to her class was almost always pointless. The papers we had to write were on topics no one could get interested in. If you want to learn something, don't take this class. Would not recommend her
Dr. Shaw has a very dry sense of humor, which is about the only thing that makes her class somewhat interesting. She grades hard, but offers decent feedback to let you know what you did wrong. She is very helpful, but she can easily come off as rash or annoyed. I wouldn't take her unless I had no other option.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. I only took this class because it fit into my schedule well, and now I regret it. Considering how simple her prompts are, she grades incredibly hard. The articles that you HAVE to write on are very boring and she wants everyone to write about the same thing. Skip 3+ daysgrade lowered by a letter grade.
Professor Shaw is a great professor. She is very understanding and dedicated to the material she teaches. I took 2 classes with her and I enjoyed both. She is very helpful if you ask for help and she is good at going through all concepts needed to do well on her tests. She is great!
She was very interactive and often made sure to check to see if we understood the concept she was teaching. Work load was heavy ONLY if done at the last-second. Overall, it shocks me that Professor Shaw was ranked the way she was.
I honestly do not know why her rating is so low. She is one of the best professors Ive ever had. Her explanations and lectures are very clear and concise. You always find yourself having an AHA! moment because she teaches in a way that makes concepts easier to understand. She also cares about her students and make sure everyone understands.
Professor Shaw is a good professor who is very articulate on what she expects from you. If you follow the guidelines for the papers and don't procrastinate you will do well.
I took this professor in the spring, In the beginning I really did enjoy her. As the semester went on, I noticed that the papers started to get harder and it seemed everyone was confused. The prompts are not very interesting to anyone and she is a hard grader. I don't recommend taking this class unless you are going to show up.
This is easily the worst class I have ever taken. Professor Shaw does not care about her students at all. She gives a lot of instruction on how to write your paper, and even if you follow everything she said, she will mark half of it wrong. Do not take this professor. Worst professor I have ever had.
Best Eng professor I've had! She cares a lot about her students and gives really good feedback about your papers. Not an easy class, so be ready to do research on your papers. Her paper topics are very open minded and creative so she'll give you a topic and let you decide what exactly to write about!
Rudest person I've ever met. At the beginning of the semester she acts like she's super nice, but she is actually ridiculously rude, smells like smoke and every paper I got back smelled like smoke. If you ask for help or fall behind, she acts like she is scolding you like a dog, NOT understanding at all. By far the worse professor I've had so far.
Horrible, especially the attitude she has. she may have her nice moments (very rare). Overall just a horrible attitude, and rude. can't really stress it more than that. I personally would not recommend having her as a professor. If you do decide to have her......... GOOD LUCK!!!!!
The worst professor Ive ever had. Gives no lectures nor provides any kind of help. Youre better off taking this class online if shes the only teacher available. Rude most of the time and calls you out in front of the whole class while making you feel very uncomfortable and unwelcomed. No matter how good your paper is youll probably receive 75%
She is fair, willing to help and gives expectations at the beginning of the semester. If you apply yourself you will have no issues.
Professor Shaw is hard to please. However if you really pay attention to what she expects out of you youll do good. She is a hard grader when it comes to essays but shes only trying to engrave in your head on how to properly write an essay. I learned a lot, the only reason why I rated so low is because again shes hard to please.
Do not take this course with Shaw. Let it be your last choice. Assignments are simple yet she makes them seem very hard. Class time is 90% of lectures about what she expects on papers, yet she is not specific about how she wants the assignment done. Seriously just don't take this course with her.

Shaw was a okay professor.. she did give good feedback on what she expects from your paper but a tough grader for sure. But she was not reachable outside of class at all and could be little rude sometimes. She expects A LOT from you.. I would not recommend her at all.
There are 4 essays and her lectures aren't very helpful either. She's got a dry sense of humor and takes a very long time to get back to you. She wants students to participate, but she can be very rude if she doesn't like your answer. Follow her strict grading criteria and choose good topics that you know she'll be interested in.
Her grading criteria was never clear. Because of the coronavirus, I had to take her class online. I hardly heard from her and she graded the assignments two months after the initial due date. Don't expect to get any feedback from her. Also, the "samples' that she gave for our papers didn't help whatsoever. Worst professor ever.
Her lectures never helped & whenever you tried getting in contact with her, she wouldnt reply for days & was very rude. She would take a couple months to grade papers, not to mention i have no idea what my final grade is because she hasnt graded my final paper yet even tho the semester ended over 20 days and yet to hear back.
She is not very helpful and only tells you what you did wrong after the fact. Not very good at communicating and instructions arent clear at times. If avoidable I would avoid. I would definitely not take her class again being online. Maybe in person would be better but doubt it. 1/10
Really wish she would put her pride aside and actually help students instead of waiting 2-3 months to grade stuff then hit you with harsh constructive criticism. I lost all respect for this so called professor at the very start of the semester when refused to actually help me and instead decided to be little me for whatever reason.
This teacher doesn't know what the hell they're doing. The only essay she's graded was from Feb 5th, it's May 11th and she still hasn't graded the other three essays required. Don't ever take this professor, I had to because all of the other ones were gone. smfh
The class should not be as difficult as it was. There were only 4 not very big papers. The problem is that she never graded our final paper and she took months to grade papers. I was unable to receive feedback for any of my papers because she graded so late.
I felt Professor Shaw was very unfair . Yes she had good feedback on papers which helped but was such a tough grader. She failed me at the end of my semester when I had a B+ in her class and brought me down to an F. I highly do not recommend to take her class!

There were only four papers due in the class if you miss one you will not pass the class. The professor expects students to turn in assignments on time, however, only one paper was graded for months. The peer-edit assignments are for you to fix all of the issues on your paper based on your peers' advice. Prof's writing advice will fail you.
I took their class in person and tbh I didnt bother attending after about half way through. You dont really get anything covered in their classes and you could just get all of the essays done ahead of time. Its currently finals week and the only paper she graded was the first one from 3 months ago. Everything else hasnt been graded. Not good
I would not recommend taking this teacher, if your able to pick another teacher definitely do that. In my opinion she grades very hard. She also takes forever to put in grades. Therefore, for more than half the semester you have no clue what your grade even is. If you skip class it doesnt really matter, better just to do the work at home
She loves to grade everything the day before the withdrawal deadline and not explain why you received the grades you got. You basically have no choice but to drop the class. Your grade is a mystery for basically the whole semester, and she refuses to give you any idea of how you're doing. It's negligence and she needs to be held accountable.
I deeply regret taking Kerri's class. She is the first professor I've had on campus at rvc and she to me is an example of what not to be when I go into education in the future. She is a lazy grader and I'm currently at 3 weeks from finals and she has not even graded the second paper. If you need active feedback/help with writing do not take her.
I am currently take where class Eng. 103 she is the worst teacher I have ever had to the point where she doesn't care if you fail or not. She helps you when she want to help you it depends on her days. I am less than a week away from finals for her and she has only graded one paper. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER AT ALL
Throughout this semester this professor never provided any feedback on papers till the day grades were due as well as only commenting the same thing on every essay. Our essays were never explained or had any kind of expectations. Not all grades were completed.

The beginning of the semester went smoothly until about midterms it became very unorganized. She kept pushing back due dates+grades because of how far behind on grading she was. One thing I did like was the worksheets and samples she provided to help us with the papers.
I can not, in good conscience, recommend taking Kerri's classes. She takes ridiculous amounts of time to grade papers so you have absolutely no idea what your grade is throughout the semester, and when she does grade stuff, she grades based on criteria you couldn't have known because she doesn't provide or follow a rubric. 0/5.
This professor is quite disorganized, often falling behind on grading. However, the worksheets and samples provided were helpful for the papers. To succeed, stay on top of assignments and use unstuck ai alongside the free textbook for study prep.
While she doesn't add a lot of homework, the essays are difficult and demanding for an English 101 class. She never gave feedback, graded things MONTHS late, and didn't show up for 7 classes. For the price of the class, missing that many lectures is a waste of your time. Be sure to unenroll if you choose her for your English class. 0/10 very rude!
She took a while to grade anything. Grading was beyond harsh especially for the class being an intro/basic English class. She has beyond high expectations. She would also cancel class frequently. I'd only taken AP and accelerated English classes, and this was like nothing I've ever experienced before.
