Such an awesome prof! He's entertaining (ADHD??) and a total genius. really knows his stuff, you can ask him anything.
Probably a really smart guy but he's a terrible teacher. No organization, and he jumps back and forth between topics in a very confusing way.
Sure he's entertaining in class, but you have no idea what he's talking about!! This guy is a terrible prof who should just stick to research.
Avoid anything he teaches at all costs!
This man is fantastic. His lectures are entertaining, and it wasn't too hard to do pretty well in the class. If you're a "class notes are online" junkie, don't take his courses. Its all on the blackboard, and you have to attend. Oh also, he's not that nice in person. I dunno... I can see how you wouldn't, but I enjoyed it.
go to class! take good notes! read the text! don't write the midterm, its way harder than the final. He says the final is cumulative, but it only asked a few fill-in-the-blank, matching and bonus questions on the 1st half of the course. Be prepared to work for a good grade, he's tough and intimidatingly smart. but the lectures are very interesting
interesting material, but very demanding class. only can attend class to get notes, and the midterm and final were BRUTAL. after talking to him after i failed and brought my WHOLE average down, he said that almost half the class failed, like thats supposed to make me feel better. Put alot of time and effort in to pass or do well.
His lectures are disorganized and hard to follow (he even goes skipping through his slides trying to find what he's looking for), and his tests are utterly brutal. He is willing to try to help students, but comes across as rather condescending and is still difficult to understand in person. Don't take this class if you value your GPA or sanity!
appears to teach a neural physiology class instead of sticking to the curriculum of Animal Physiology. Constantly goes off topic discussing his own research and papers he has written. Just teach us what we do experiments on in the labs and it'd be a half decent class.
Animal physiology should be renamed, "musings of an arrogant, long lost twin of Bill Gates who's bitter because he never created Microsoft". If he could be summed up in a sentence, it would be, "Just because you know it, doens't mean you can teach it." He's smart, but his unplanned spastic lectures and arrogance enrage me for having to pay for it.
If you ask stupid questions expect to get shot down. Ask a few intelligent questions and you will get intelligent answers. He's "intimidating" because he won't spoonfeed you. Paying tuition doesn't entitle you to high GPA's without working for it in his class. Plan to dedicate a lot of time to this course if you expect results!
Abandon hope all ye who enter this guy's class. Says he likes to "weed out", but was forced to take a remedial teaching course during Fall term, and had a monitor (Teaching and Learning Centre)in class after a midterm class avg about 38%. May have the distinction of personally emptying the Biology Dept. of students. He discourages a love of Science.
Do NOT, repeat,do NOT enter a class with this useless twit!! As mentioned above, failed the class on the MT, and did no better to try and compensate on the final. There is NO WAY a 4th year biology major, should be failing animal phys in lecture, yet scoring 93 in the lab section. Tests incomprehensible, time limiting, and unfair. AVIOD AT ALL COST
He may be brilliant, but he can not teach. He was beter in 409 than 365, but still disorganized and rude. He made it very clear that he had better places to be, and more interesting things to be doing than teaching undergraduates. He is an angry, arrogant maniac. Avoid at all costs!
I just finished Delaney's midterm this year... and he is a different person now! He says he is "taking the better medication now". His midterm average was fair and his manners have improved greatly! He's still a hardass and expects a lot from students, buch such is neurobiology! I really like him now.
Hilarious professor, really cleaned up his act since animal physiology. Keeps the class interested and entertained while still maintaining a high standard. Of course, the class is still demanding, but what do you expect? Tests are based only off his lecture material.
Exams were hard. Had heard bad things about him, but his lectures were organized and easy to follow. Any questions were promptly dealt with over email, and he clarified any problems at the start of the next class. Overall a great experience but you have to work hard, go to class, and take good notes.
Fabulous!!!! Challenging but do-able, exams were very fair, project was great, really keeps your internet...very very entertaining.
Good prof and fun class, much better than what I was expecting. However, Delaney expects a lot from students and his exams are not easy. Lectures are entertaining but he's a bit intimidating in person.
The most unapproachable professor I have ever had. He doesn't mark according to a marking key and his scoring seems arbitrary. If you can AVOID this prof I would suggest it. He tries to make his students feel stupid.
Great prof, really smart. Easy to get an A if you come to class, take good notes, and STUDY the material. Having a pulse is not enough with Delaney. People that say he is unpleasant are the fools who demand to pass the course simply for being there... you have to put in the work. Take his courses! You'll learn a TON.
this guy begins the class telling how badly you all will do. he is telling the truth! he destroyed the class for me and many other classmates that were interested in the subject. goes through lecture too fast and talks like you already have your neuro degree. he bombed most the class. STAY AWAY
All opinions aside: takes simple concepts and fubar's them. I'll make comment post midterm
The guy is extremely stern, and not in a reasonable way. He is rude and somewhat offensive. Judges you as a person if your grades are not high.
Completely rude and yells at people if you don't speak up. Tests are incredibly hard
Great neuroscientist but he does not know how to teach. Null people skills. Bad testing methods, unfair and illogic. A great scientist that does not care about his course because he is the dean and he is so busy that he does not pay attention to his own class.
This guy is a smart enough guy, and prob great scientist, but terrible terrible prof. So disorganized and poor at presenting material. Dreading the semester already.
Straight up, avoid this class. He is a bad teacher, rude to students and exceptionally hard on exams. Classes are very dry and he's murmuring haphazardly most of the time with occasional tasteless jokes.
Avoid any contact with him! He is a terrible person. No social skills and bad reputation at the university. Disorganized and thinks that the students are stupid.
This is one class you do not want to take at all. I made the mistake to take it, now you don't have to.
Incredibly rude to the students, and stands up there mumbling and drawing unclear pictures on the board. Teaches the material using language and examples that would only make sense if you already KNEW the material.
Bad teacher. Not a nice person to interact with
This guy was smart, but bad at helping a student understand concepts. If the question was conceptual, he might laugh at send you away to review and stick your face in the text some more. Anything specific or ,weirdly enough, not in the scope of the class, he'd go into detail to help you understand. Loves critical thinking exercises, no MC.
Tough teacher, smart guy, fair testing with lots of bonus marks and choices for the long answer questions. I learned a ton by always writing down everything he said in class. He moves fast so it does take extra legwork to keep up. Can be dismissive if you're asking questions that show you haven't put time in already. Enjoyed his class overall.
Material is fascinating but can be tricky - one of these courses that requires time. He's explicit about what he will test you on. Tests have lots of bonus marks which help. Yes, he is eccentric and can come across as rude. Don't be offended - take it as an opportunity to swallow your ego and LEARN from someone a lot smarter than you are.
Toughest biology class so far, good professor. Definitely a class where you will have to seriously take the time to study and relinquish your ego before lectures. Beyond the eccentric façade of the guy, there is a lot to learn from him. Neurobiology is hard and should not be taken as an elective if you don't show interest in it.
He is one of the worst profs at UVic. Very rude and offensive. Does not care about this class, you or anyone. Only take this if you have to. Do not miss class despite the constant belittling. Expect to put a lot of work in, especially if you are not a top student.
Not sure why everyone rags on Kerry. Ya he can be dismissive if you OBVIOUSLY haven't studied, but it's an upper level neurobio course - you're going to have to work. I honestly have never learned so much from one prof. So incredibly smart. I don't care what people say, his tests were extremely fair. Not to mention about 20% of bonus questions.....
Neurobiology is a really tough course but worth the effort! REALLY important to attend class and pay attention to what Dr. Delaney emphasizes. He is very clear on his learning expectations and his lectures are really helpful in explaining the material. The tests are very fair and have plenty of opportunity for bonus marks which is awesome :)
Toughest biology class ever! Dont take this class if you are not required to. He is rude and arrogant and his exams are ridiculously difficult.
Kerry is my fav prof I have ever had at uni. Yes, the tests are hard... BUT very manageable if you go to every class, take detailed notes on what he says, and study hard. I have never learnt so much from a prof and I want to take more of his classes! If you're interested in neuro this is the class for you
Whoever think Kerry is a good prof needs to get their head checked. He is by far the worst professor I've ever encountered in Uni. Avoid this class at all costs.
In all honesty Kerry is by far one of the most intellectual professors I have ever had at UVic. His lectures are absolutely amazing, and you will learn A LOT. He does sometimes have a short temper and the material might seem overwhelming, but if you study lots and keep up on the notes this class is very manageable. Note: 20% of his exams are bonus!
Delaney makes me mad. His lectures are rushed and he skips material because he has run out of time. His slides are chaotic and hard to go back and study from. He is rude, he talks over students who try to ask questions, and is very impatient. He refuses to clarify or re-explain concepts when students ask. Avoid him.
Kerry is the most scatter-brained professor I have ever had, his slides are a mess and his lectures are chaotic. You are graded all on tests and the lab portion. Overall would avoid him if you can.
This class was co-taught and I dreaded whenever they switched back to Delaney... Notes are scattered and impossible to follow... Speaks with scattered thoughts which makes it difficult to learn new and foreign material. Exam questions are very difficult. One of my worst experiences with a UVIC prof.
Dr. Delaneys lectures were REALLY bad. They were super rushed and his tests required a far higher level of understanding of the material than what he would teach. He was always really rude to students who asked questions and after talking to other students, I realized I wasnt the only one who was afraid to ask questions in this class.
By all accounts prof. Delaney is very intellectual. However he totally lacks the pedagogical skills to convey any of his supposed knowledge to his students. Additionally, his short temper and total disregard for his students makes him not a fun prof to learn anything from. If you have to take a class with Delaney, I wish you luck.
please, whatever you do, avoid Kerry Delaney at all costs. Dr. Delaney was unprepared for class often, and was impatient with students. In my four years of taking biology courses at the university of Victoria, I have never felt so disappointed in a professor. I was very excited about this course, but was appalled the way it was taught.
Truthfully I don't think this class could have been instructed worse. I felt panicked during every lecture as they were so disorganized and delivered so incoherently. Then if a student asked a question Delaney would snap at them. Exams were extremely difficult. As an A student this class was a big hit on my GPA. Avoid if you can, if not good luck
It is very unfortunate, because I was really excited to take this course, but Delaney made it a dreadful experience. Unprofessional and lazy "teaching". He was very disorganized and presented info in a way that was impossible to follow. Rude to students. As an "A" student I was very disheartened with the results of this class. Beyond disappointing.
It's true, Delaney is one of the tougher professors at Uvic. BUT, that's only because he's incredibly respected in the science community, thus expects a lot from his students. His temper is short, but if you show interest in the subject he will take the time to explain anything. Come to the course keen and ready to learn.
I can never understand the point of what he is trying to say, he just starts talking without the conclusion of what he's saying being clear at all. The assigned readings don't cover all lecture topic so you can't even rely on the textbook. On top of that, the exams are really hard, which is a terrible combo with a prof who can't teach
taking this class right now.... the class is in the mornings, my first of the day.... I don't wear my seatbelt when I'm driving to this class in hopes that i won't make it
I am convinced this man wrote his own good reviews. Even when you read them they are all similar and sound like someone trying to describe themself XD. On a real note, this is probably the worst class iv taken. The material is interesting but its impossible to learn from this man. I dread the lectures he is teaching. The other prof is great
Kerry knows very well that just about everyone taking this third year class are here because its a requirement for their program, and yet, he seems to have an expectation that many students will drop it and he constantly brings up the course drop date. Its almost like he takes pride in making upper-year students switch / drop out of their program.
people complain about this prof, but 367 is an amazing course. I didn't read a single page of the textbook- if you just study the lectures hard you should be fine. It's an upper level neuro course, obviously it's meant to be difficult. He doesn't baby people, but if you pay attention and take notes, it's a great course.
Im very confident when I say this… All the good reviews were written by Kerry himself. They are the only reason his overall rating is not a 1
Kerry is kind of a "guest" speaker for BIOL186, he teaches for 2 weeks. He really knows his material which I think creates a problem for him covering a first year course as he seems to go too in-depth in comparison to the rest of the class and how little he teaches for in it. He is friendly and seems like a better third year prof than 1
Delaney teaches a small section, 3 lectures. He is clearly knowledgeable, but not in how to teach a 1st yr class. He complained that the textbook was too general, and told us that we needed to study what he said in lecture because he would contradict the textbook. I had to miss his lectures due to COVID, and found it very difficult to catch up.
he definitely knows his stuff, but for a 1st year INTRO bio course he went way more in depth than he probably needed to. his lectures were disjointed, jumping back and forth between topics, and not well planned. when students asked questions he seemed annoyed more than anything, and was unapproachable (but that could have just been me)
He is so passive aggressive, it's hard to even imagine. This is the only professor who I do not like to ask questions from because he can't answer them without adding some sort of personal insult. You would expect that someone so incomprehensible would be used to repeating himself but ask him to do so and he acts like its the biggest inconvenience
This the worst class ever. Dr. Delaney has no respect for anyone but himself. He is rude to students when they ask questions and is extremely unapproachable. His lecture slides are scattered and his exams are very difficult. There is only a quiz, midterm, and a 60% final which makes it impossible to improve your grade.
Lectures were disorganized, and 2/3 were recorded with no microphone. Slides were messy and not representative of requisite knowledge. Material density was not consistent with other lecturers in BIOL 186.
Kerry is knowledgeable, sure, but should avoid teaching. He was a disorganized lecturer. Doing well was dependant on memorization more than understanding. Would rather switch my major than take another course with him.
Lecture is really disorganised and hard to follow
This professor is clearly knowledgeable in the content, however it takes more than understanding the material to be a good professor. We were tested on minute details instead of concepts that would be applicable in later years. He could be a good professor if he wanted to actually teach, but it feels like he doesn't want students to succeed.
Kerry's section of bio186 was very disappointing. His lectures were very disorganized and he was super rude to students when questions were asked. He tried to cover way more than he should have for an intro bio class and he almost seemed to want students to do poorly. I think his section could have been very engaging if he actually wanted to teach.
This prof was completely ill-suited to a first year intro biology class, it's fairly clear he doesn't want to be there. His material was incredibly heavy, very disproportionate to the rest of the course. His lectures are very disjointed and hard to follow, and VERY hard to catch up on if you miss a class.
This class could have been sooooo much better if it was 3, 50 minute lectures a week and instead of a midterm and a final, there were 4 non-cumulative midterms. That is the ONLY way I can possibly see this amount of important material being manageable for students. But even then, they'd struggle since they have to teach everything to themselves...
This is the worst class I have ever taken. Dr. Delaney's lectures are confusing, dense, and filled with way too much information. He is also condescending, rude, and inaccessible by email. He grades entirely based on tests, which are incomprehensible and obscure. They also are clearly thrown together last minute, as our 60% final had 3 mistakes
I found the course concepts and general content very interesting but the way we were graded did not reflect that at all. Dr.Delaney jokes about being able to teach this class hungover and is very condescending to students. Has no empathy whatsoever. His slides are often very disorganized and he seems to writes the midterm/final the night before.
Disorganized lectures and the material that he taught did not follow the textbook and was far too advanced for the level he was teaching. He is extremely smart, but probably not meant to teach first years.
Kerry's slides were disorganized, long-winded, and confusing. It was extremely unclear what we actually needed to know for the course, and what he just wanted to tell us. The exam questions he wrote were also confusing and unclear. He was also very rude condescending towards those answering his questions in class. Avoid if you can.
I don't even have to explain. Terrible prof, rude, hates his students. Good luck taking a course from him.
Knowledgable, but presents information in a slightly disorganized fashion. Fortunately, he is generous with re-weighting of quizzes in favor of students. Lecture slides contain what is necessary for exams, but also require you to be attentive, particularily when an image is presented with no background text. Good luck, it is possible to do well.
His explanations of concepts and processes become increasingly confusing because he often glosses over important material that recurs, making his lectures very difficult to learn from.
By far the worst professor I have ever encountered in post secondary. Extremely rude and condescending to his students, and it's extremely unclear what you are expected to know for the exams. BUT 367 is not impossible to pass - make sure to pay attention in class and type out EVERYTHING he says, ESPECIALLY when there is a slide without text on it.
Kerry is rude, hard to deal with, and loves to not tell you what is expected for the midterm or final. He is condescending to anyone who asks a question he feels he has already answered, and he will makes fun of the question/person in front of the entire class. Awful prof, wish I didn't have to take his class.
First quiz, focused on action potential calculations, worth 15%, supposed to "give you an idea what is going to be on the midterm" Midterm, random madlib format based on whatever he thought of the night before to make it as painful as possible for "this generation". Avoid at all costs
Please don't be discouraged by these negative reviews, these people just weren't ready for a non-quizlet-based bio class. His exams were tough, but more than fair. He's very helpful and will make sure you understand your question, swallow your pride and ask, he'll help you even if it is a bone-headed question. Great entertaining lectures too
Good class, learned a lot about Neurobio. - He doesn't record class and has hard tests. - He also strongly promotes inclusivity by being equivalently rude and abrupt to all. - Surprise, you've gotta work hard to do well. If ur good at dealing with gruff people and like dry humour --> he's kinda hilarious.
I got really scared for this class after reading these reviews but honestly he's not that bad. All his quizzes/tests have bonus questions that are very fair and easy to do if you've studied, which is very helpful! He might come across a bit rude sometimes but it's clear that he wants people to do well in the course.
Awful and rude. Cant articulate the science
Kerry started the class by stating that half of the class will fail, so hopefully you did not take the course in your final semester. Found many mistakes in his grading, he encouraged review of his grading yet when approached he was not very happy. Very rude to students unnecessarily.
Traumatizing. Literally so bad. Don't take unless u have to and if u do good luck and don't ask questions or go on your phone - you WILL be laughed at or called out. The first quiz isn't terrible.
This content is difficult and Delaney makes it much worse. His lectures are disorganized and very difficult to follow; he throws disorganized thoughts at you. Here is how I passed... make sure you don't procrastinate. Learn the main ideas by going through the textbook and PowerPoint figures. Then add the details! You got this!
367 is a tough upper year bio, but it is not impossible. Kerry has a not so funny way of coming accross as rude, but he does mean well and tries to give you a taste of what science can be like. I think the class would be easier with a different prof, but put your time in, never fall behind and ask for help (even if its scary) and you will be okay!
Kerry Delaney is very rude to students and is an awful prof. He does not teach well and will laugh at you in front of the whole class when you do not understand the concept. He is obviously smart and understands the concepts he is teaching, but he does not teach the concepts well.
Dr. Delaney can come across as rude sometimes but it's clear he wants his students to succeed. Most of his slides include figures from the textbook so if you struggle understanding the concepts, the text is your best friend. Tests are fair if you study and he has 1-2 bonus questions on each one. Don't recommend if you are not interested in neuro.
Didn't feel like a supportive learning environment because it was hard to ask Dr. Delaney questions without him getting frustrated with you for not understanding, or calling you out in front of other students. I took it as an elective because I was interested but it was a stressful course layout and teaching style so I decided it wasn't worth it.
Worst professor I have ever had at UVIC. I usually like to find the pros and cons of a professor but for Delaney I cannot think of a single positive thing. Avoid at all costs. I was completely lost during lectures and sometimes I think he was too. Spent half the class making weird noises cause he would forget what he was talking about. AVOID!!!!!!!
the absolute WORST educator i have come across. avoid at literally all costs please i'm trying to save you. too many reasons to list.
This class can be a challenge, but with the right study tools, like Unstuckstudy, you can succeed. The professor has a particular teaching style that may come across as blunt, but engaging with the material and using the textbook can help you navigate the course. Overall, it's a tough but rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
Never in my 4 years at UVic have I ever had a professor answer a phone call and TALK on the phone IN a final exam room. For a long time sh that. Not only is it reflective of how unprofessional his teaching style is in lectures, it's absolutely disrespectful to students who are trying to focus and complete an exam for a class they've paid for.
What can I say that hasn't already been said. Insanely hard final.
This has been by far the worst class I've had to take for my degree, and the most discouraging/unprofessional professor I've encountered. All of the previous reviews are accurate, so please be aware of what you're getting into with this course. Good luck to those whom this course is mandatory, and please avoid taking this as an elective.
Honestly a pretty engaging course, he is a bit of a prickly character however he has engaging lectures that go by quickly and I walked away actually grasping concepts. Write down absolutely everything he says but don't really need to use textbook (I did not). Only a midterm and final but there are bonus options and he is a generous marker.
There is not much graded so study like your life depends on it for the midterm and final and you will be okay!! Make a study group, it will be such a life-saver. The lectures were engaging, but difficult to understand. Pay attention and try to grasp concepts by reading extra, watching YouTube videos, listening to podcasts, etc. You got this!!!
Super smart sarcastic guy, would love to pick apart his brain. But man is he a terrible prof. He creates an unnecessary toxic learning environment. Is very rude to students who ask dumb questions and will lyk you are dumb. I'm shocked how he has gotten away with such bad treatment of students. SATA on tests horrible, neg points possible
