The lectures are boring but it is an easy class. He lets you type your notes for the week and use them on the tests. But make sure to read the articles because 3/4 of the tests will be on the readings. 1 group project, 1 paper, 2 exams, some pop quizzes.

Kerry is a very good professor. He keeps class interesting and does a very good job of explaining the topics. Two tests, a paper, a few pop quizzes, and random attendance days make up your grade. Not that hard of a class, but that is because of him, just do the readings and you will be fine.

Professor Dobranski is a really nice and helpful guy. His lectures can sometimes be kinda dry, especially in the morning. Assigns articles so you don't have to buy a textbook, and is very open to working around your schedule (let me take a test during his office hours so I could go to the Third Eye Blind concert the night before)

I signed up for professor D based on his excellent reviews here. I was honestly shocked at what a horrible professor he was. He treats his students as inferior to him. He expects entirely too much for his quizzes, and laughs when students have concerns over grades. He has teachers pets too. This is by far the worst class I have taken. STAY AWAY

This class is either a hit or miss; if you do the readings (which at times seems a little much) and pay attention in class, it's an easy A. If you don't, it's not. He's very clear in class, but ultimately much of the work (and learning) falls to you. Classes can be uninteresting, but he successfully streamlines a rather subjective topic quite well.

Prof Dobransky is a nice guy, but he assigns way too much reading and then does pop quizzes on the smallest detail of them and then never really refers to them again in lecture. His lectures aren't the most interesting and he is awful at answering questions because he floats around and never really is clear. Not a bad guy but don't recommend.

Dobransky is clearly a good person, but with that being said good people are not always good teachers. He uses obtuse or long readings and focuses in on points that have importance but could easily be stated in as little as a 10 page or less reading when we only need to maintain the information he highlights and none of the context of the paper.

This class is not for the weak. The readings are extremely dense and he chooses very specific details for a quiz every week. He's pretty disorganized and does not give clear grading criteria. He has a very monotone voice which makes lectures hard to engage with, but he will slow down for people to finish writing.

He is a very smart guy, but makes this class so hard. It could be so interesting but he throws way too much content at you at once. 60+ pages of reading every week on top of mandatory group discussions. Hand in notes each week, it's the only way to pass the exams. It's a super heavy load of work and it's very time consuming so beware of that.

HEAVY on the readings and dense lectures but he cares about your success and gives you many opportunities to engage with the course material to foster understanding. His courses tend to be difficult in terms of content but the assignments are fairly easy. Turn in high-quality assignments with lots of connections and you'll do great.

no tests, 2 group presentations, attendance, weekly quizzes, and a final paper. Readings every week are extremely long and quizzes are detailed. Groups present ("teach") for the whole week, 2 classes for an hour 15 mins, twice a semester based on assigned readings. Dobransky is a good professor but the students teach the class.

Dobransky was the worst professor I've had. All his work is group work so your entire grade depends on your group. Not to mention the majority of your grade depends on the Memoir and Group Presentation. His midterm review wasn't even a review, he said we could ask questions and wouldnt even answer them. He also assigns 80 pages of reading each week

This is the worst class I've taken at JMU so far. He assigns at least 70 pages of reading a week with a quiz in class. We have a group project and weekly group discussions, plus a memoir assignment. He held a "review session" for the midterm but refused to answer anyones questions because they were "too vague" or "in the reading". DO NOT TAKE.

Only take this class if you care about the content. Lots of reading but I really like the material. You are stuck with a group for weekly discussions and a presentation project, but just make sure everyone does their part. Attendance isn't mandatory but lecture material is important and he has a weekly quiz that's taken in class. Low-key a dilf

This class is ridiculous. If you want an easy grade, DON'T take this class. Weekly quizzes and discussions which you HAVE to meet with a group he assigns, which is hard already since it's an asynchronous class. The quizzes are two questions and weigh down your grade so much. The "lectures" are repetitive and there's a final project AND exam.

I would not recommend this class. You had to meet with your assigned group once a week and complete discussions. Grading was tough and we didn't receive guidelines about what was expected on the assignment. I emailed Dobransky, didn't hear anything back for a few days and had to double email him which his response was "Oh, I saw your email".

The class is very reading heavy and has quizzes that are 2-4 questions, pulled from specific parts rather than broad overview of the readings. There is also the aspect of group work which can make or break your grade depending on who is in your group. If you are passionate about the content and enjoy reading I reccomend but if not then pass on him.

The weekly pop quiz nature of this course doesn't make any sense whatsoever. It's incredibly specific questions, which amount up to usually around 5 questions on the quiz. They are based on readings that have 70+ pages worth of content making it incredibly difficult to know what's on the pop quiz in the first place. Cannot recommend this professor.

Take what I say with a grand of salt. At the start of class Dobransky shows you how to go about taking notes on the readings. It made it way easier to study. There is a lot of readings but if you take notes and hand in the note sheet you are ok. However if you have a heavy course load already and need an elective pick a different class.

Don't take this class if you are a psychology major. Prof is nice, but he really doesn't understand psychological concepts. There were multiple occasions where he just stated something that was blatantly false. If you take this class, you will be insanely annoyed with the inaccurate representations and unsupported "evidence" he brings up.

Unfortunately horrible class. Dobransky is strict, cold, and unable to provide an interesting lecture. He is embarrassingly unclear with deadlines and creates surprise assignments that the syllabus doesn't cover. I was looking forward to the subject material of SOCI 335 but was disappointed by how quickly Dobransky can make sociology uninteresting.

I took this class online asynch and overall it was a good class. Professor Dobransky answers emails pretty quickly and is available if you need. However, there is a group project at the end of the semester and if u can't get in touch with your group members through canvas it can be difficult. My group ended up having to do the project with less ppl

He was an amazing teacher. The class is very heavy on lectures and readings but that's likely in almost any sociology course. He offered lot's of extra credit. It's a lot of work but if you put in that work and try he will acknowledge that and push for you to get a passing grade.

Nice professor and he responds to emails and gives feedback fairly quick. Lectures are boring, but the readings are interesting. There's a quiz every week based on the weekly readings, but it is open note if you have them printed. Exams are a lot of writing and also open note if they're printed.
