Kerry is a teacher who is obviously very passionate about the subject he teaches which made the class a lot of fun. The problem is that he gave the class several tedious assignments that weren’t very helpful in learning the material. We also skipped a good portion of the book that I felt would have been important to learn. He also has bad attendanc
Boring and hard
very difficult to understand and the work is a pain. very unhelpful and the tests are nitpicking.
great teacher he really takes the time to explane and he isent hard at all you just have to pay attention

Good Teacher, very clear and helpful with understanding class material... Just really have to pay close attention to study guides, videos etc in class to pass the class..
he meant well.. but class was so boring i had to drag myself there.. tests were super hard and he pretty much read from the book all quarter his group assignments also very lame!
I really liked this professor. He enjoys his subject, as well as teaching it. I learned alot in his classes and would recomend him to anyone willing to listen and do the assingments. There is more to the subject that reading maps...
One of my favorite professors at EVCC. He is thoughtful, helpful, and if you show interest in the class you will learn alot. He also works in his field outside of teaching I believe, always a good sign.
Didn't always help with problems people had, didn't give out clear instructions to assignments.
...okay this is like geography and economics together in one class which was a nightmare for me, because.. PLAH to eco. but IF you following instructions, do all the h/w you will get an easy A. but make sure to do all the h/w because the tests are hard. plus he has a few extra credit assignments for few points.
Kerry Lyste great proffesor. very grateful this gentleman guided me with my education. nobody is but perfect nine out of ten stars
this class is geography and economics together. just do all the h/w you will get an easy A. but make sure to do all the h/w because the tests are hard!!!! (as in the most random questions in the world). it's nice b/c he gives you exta credit for random things & for bring cookies on the last day. he is a bit WEIRD, but you can live through it.
This was an online class. I think he was on vacation or something because reports weren't graded until weeks later and questions about current assignments or chapters weren't answered until the following week, which of course was FAR TO LATE!

Looks like Chandler from Friends. Pretty cool teacher, fun and engaging in class, but definitely participate, he enjoys that. WARNING: NEVER POSTS GRADES. For my class he didn't post them until the very last day of class, a bit late. While he does take into account your attendence and participation, do all the homework. Final was ok, but random.
he just regurgitated the book no new info was presented in class all videos were available online i was disappointed in the lack of depth the professor had. if it wasn't in the book he could not answer the question.
He's very helpfull, always willing to help you understand the work.
The class is great. It's fun, interactive, and he really relates the material to the students.
Taught mostly from the book, but I did enjoy the "group projects" we would do every other week, they were presentations on certain points like culture, environment, etc. That was the most interesting part, the rest was just listening to lectures. Nice enough, but I didn't get a feeling like he knew a ton outside of the textbook answers.
made me work way too hard - can't decide if I love of hate him.
Don't take his class for your sake.
Laziest teacher I've had. Isn't it easy enough to teach an online class, can't he at least check his e-mail? Completely left the class hanging for over a week at a time. While we were all confused about assignments and begging for help he just didn't respond. It annoys me that he gets full pay for half of an half ass job.
He was a terrible professor. He never had new material. Used old 80's videos half the time. Was so boring. And didn't help people understand the subject at all. His lectures were basically rewording the text.
Don't take this class. Save your money. Or find a different teacher.
The textbook is extremely outdated, and the quizzes are on the textbooks, so if you're up on current events, you can score low, occasionally. He didn't get graded work back to us/give us feedback until the second-to-last week of the quarter. Interesting subject, and he's got a good sense of humor, but if you like feedback, it's not so great.
you have to hand in assignments several times a week and be in class. If you do this, you can get a decent grade.
the class was hard, but he was really nice and helpful. You have to be in class because of all the material covered, and he doesn't like it if you text during class.
Lyste is... interesting. He gets really excited about the subject, and although the videos were made in 1999, they're relevant and I learned A LOT. My advice: do the homework (it's not hard), show up, and you will be happy.
I wouldn't say he was the best teacher I have had in my life, but he was nice enough and wasn't bad either.
you have to do a lot of group assignments and turn in review questions every week. If you do this, and try, you can get a good grade out of the class.
Fun class, if you have the right class members, otherwise it could be very tedious. the field trip was to Rossario beach, and was fun (but cold!!). Didn't really learn a lot, but the labs were easy to follow. If you read the book each week you'll do great. Weekly quizzes worth a large chunk of the final grade.
You can breeze by pretty easily in this class. LOTS of videos. He's kind of an awkward lecturer, but is really enthusiastic about geography and is really nice. If the right people are in it, this class is super fun, but it'd be boring otherwise. Helps not to wait until the last second to write your final, but he's a REALLY easy grader.
Kerry is a nice guy and the field trip is fun but to be honest I learned nothing in his class. All of his quizzes he got from other teachers that you can find the answers for on google. What bothered me the most is that he does not post ANY grades until the end of the quarter. We confronted him about this but he would just shrug it off.
Over all ha was pretty easy. He taught mainly from the book and old videos, and not always the best at answering questions, but if you do the work you can pass the class. The most effort I put into it was reading the chapters, and for some I didn't even have to do that.
No grades on assignments until the very end. Isn't clear about assignments, and you don't get feedback because he doesn't grade anything until the last second of the quarter. He is a nice guy though. Very passionate about Geography
The class was..okay. I expected more landforms and depth in that than culture and economics. The teacher was obsessed with geography, but the homework and assignments don't exactly make you learn anything. Read read READ THE BOOK! It is the only way you will survive the midterm and final. Overall, if you are PASSIONATE about geo. take his class.
Absolute laziest teacher ever given the title of teacher. Assigns group projects and has group presentations weekly. Too much group work, not enough grading of an individual basis. NEVER and I repeat NEVER updates grades. Class just ended and I dont know my grade. When asked if he'd update our grades he'd act offended. LAZIEST TEACHER EVER!!!
Kerri is extremely hard to work with. He won't reply to emails unless urgent. He has a cocky smirk that he uses a lot. He gives out quizzes online based on the text, group presentations and map quizzes each week.He refuses to use Angel as well, and when asked what your grade is, he says "You are fine. You are passing".I don't recommend him.Not easy
Read the book... he is passionate about Geography, but definitely will not babysit you.
Absolutely terrible. No exaggeration here: he literally took one month to respond to one of my messages. In another instance, I went to talk to him in class, and he told me to message him online. I messaged him online, and he replied, telling me to talk to him in class. This went back and forth a few time and he never helped me. Don't take him.
He will post your grades maybe twice a quarter, midterm and finals. He told us to be at the school at 8:30 but didn't show up himself until 9 for the field trip. Therefore we missed our ferry and the next one wasn't for 4 hours... However if you work hard you'll do fine.
very passionate regarding geography; great instructor. Very heavy homework load, though its not the hardest on the planet. the content is very eye opening. Grades being posted more regularly would be nice, though he knows this downfall and is working on it!!
Kerry Lyste make the classy seem very easy - not that it is, but the way that he sets up the course load. The information that we absorb is done in a variety of different ways, from group projects, exams, reading assignments and presentations. There is a reason why people learn from him! Down side? He puts in grades 5-6 weeks in.
Kerry is a good guy and he knows his geography, but I didn't like him as a teacher. He never once showed up on time, didn't have a single assignment graded until the final week of class, and had a three day field trip during Super Bowl weekend. There are weekly group projects and he does his field trips every quarter.
Kerry is a good guy and loves geography, but quite honestly he is a horrible teacher. He gives out lots of homework, but you do not learn anything! It's busy work! He does not use the textbook much either. Frustrating. He also gives way too much mercy for turning in late work. Do not expect grades till the end of the quarter. Do not take it!
If there's only one teacher on earth who is saved by his TA its this guy. He explains nothing that you actually need to know without you riddling him with questions, and he refuses to give any kind of specifics on what he wants from his students. Don't touch this class with a 10 foot pole if you can avoid it. Field trip was waste of time.
To get something out of this class you have to actually have an interest in science and or nature. The field trips are great, especially if you're a science major they're a great experience. If you do the work in the class you'll finish with an A easily. Kerry's a great guy just maybe a little absent minded with his teaching methods.
DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK! Its not necessary. Lectures were long and boring (only bc I have no interest in geography) but the teacher has a passion for the topic. There's a midterm, final, and online weekly quizzes. The quizzes are worth very little points so no need to worry. Group projects were SUPER easy. Overall easy A, do your work and you'll pas
Unclear, ignored students ?'s, had to really bug him to get any answer. Answered few emails, leaving students lost, bad for a class mtg 1 day a wk. Late with assigning all course work. By quarters end, it seemed like students knew more than he did about the subject & GIS software operation thru self motivated problem solving & student comradery.
He's a decent teacher, but he had us using an online mapping system for projects that we had no introduction to, and now with 1 week left I still have no idea how to use it. It's very difficult to retain info from his lectures but the interactive lessons and videos are good. He also has you form long-term groups right away so get with a good team.
Dont but the textbook! You wont use it at all, you only need an online access code. He was a really speciffic grader and now that I know what to expect from him I would take bis class again. I did like at the end of the quarter he asks what grade you think you deserve, and he gave me that grade instead of the one i was supposed to get.
Kerry is a cool guy and is not too tough on his students but I tell you what, don't take his class at 7am-9am. It is tough to stay focused for two hours that early on geography, just saying.
Kerry made the class fun, has a sense of humor and also a great teacher. Final was really interesting and fun to work at as we worked at a story map not write a boring paper
Kerry was a mixed bag. He had so much work in his class, but it was busy work that you can do (but a lot none the less). It got frustrating!!! He did have a field trip that our class did, for that, this class was worth it. Make sure you have a good group 1st day of class because you depend on them rest of the quarter. He does extra credit too.
Kerry was an awesome professor. The class itself was pretty self-explanatory and based on lectures. We had two presentations, one with a group and the other by yourself. It wasn't very intimidating though. There is quite a lot of assignments, be sure to pace yourself within this course. Nonetheless, an okay class.
Class started at 8 am. he was late almost every day of the quarter. I am not joking or exaggerating. I got an A because the class was so easy. he is a nice enough guy but a terrible teacher. if i didnt get such a good grade i would be demanding a refund from the school.
You could see more clearly through a brick as opposed to seeing through this mans instructions. Asking questions is a one way ticket down the rabbit hole, and there are no answers at the bottom. Easy busy work, terrible project direction and instructions.
Unclear directions, hard to understand assignments
Didnt explain assignments thoroughly
In all honesty you could show up for a grand total of 15 days in the quarter and still get >100% in the class. One day per week there is a one page paper due with an accompanying map. Good luck on the first one because he doesn't tell you what he's expecting. There is one group project/presentation due.
Easy and boring class. Long weekly assignments (mult. choice) that are busy work (waste your time) and hardly relate. Several extra credit points are available in the HW per week. Textbook only required because the HW is done through there. Lectures are boring and most students either didn't show up or work on HW. No studying required for an A+.
Kerry Lyste is a very educated, interesting professor who is a very fair grader. The class itself had lots of useful information presented in it, with Kerry lecturing 3 classes during the week, and had one class dedicated to students peer reviewing short papers that were due weekly. Also learned to use ArcGIS online. Overall, it was a good class.
This class was very hard. Kerry is a nice guy, but a terrible teacher. All of his instructions are unclear. The projects are just busy work. Almost all of the assignments are group projects. It is essentially the students teaching the students and Kerry is just along for the ride. This class was extremely frustrating, would not recommend.
Kerry is the single most unprofessional professor I have ever encountered. Not only was he late every single day except one this quarter, but there is a complete lack of organization. Assignment due dates are constantly contradicted between his syllabus, canvas, and what is discussed in class. He also has zero respect for his students. DONT TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He is very unclear with instructions, and when you try to get him to clarify he doesn't. There are two finals and for one he didn't put clear instructions. I emailed him twice and received no response. The field trip was ridiculous. Took us to a place that had quicksand in the dark. Just DON'T! I repeat..... just DON'T!!!!!!
unclear assignment descriptions out of date resources and textbook. will change assignment dates, making it look like you were late to submit little feedback hard to find assignments and readings all links to required readings are expired the majority of the time you spend on the class is searching for the assignments or correct link. not worth it
I took the Geography 101 class from professor Lyste, and what I do have to say is that there was a LOT of multiple choice assignments and reading, but you could easily make it through the quarter with doing very little of the reading. We spend most of the meeting days doing group projects, so if you're into lecturing there isn't much of it.
The course is centered around group papers and an obsolete pre-built online course by Pearson. The online course describes events that happened many years ago such as the completion of the Three Gorges Dam as if they were far off future events. Nothing was graded until the 8th week of the quarter and a surprise second final was issued last minute
Worst prof. I have ever had. Didn't start grading assignments until halfway through the quarter. Assigns a ridiculous amount of work, and EVERYTHING is group projects. Expect little to no instruction from him, assignment instructions are incredibly confusing. You WILL be teaching yourself because Kerry won't be doing a thing.
In the course, the instructor assigns weekly papers, discussions, and homework. He is slow in updating the grade book, which was very stressful for me, as I had to go through a few weeks without my paper graded, not knowing what I was doing wrong so that I would be able to fix it for future papers. He also takes a while answering emails.
I like Lyste. He gives a group project every week with little instruction, but I don't find it to be very confusing. Each person has an individual part of a group project to cover, and someone's lack of participation doesn't affect your grade. You have to buy MyLab for $70, but have not touched the textbook. Do your work and you'll get a good grade
He didn't start grading assignments until 5 weeks into the class. He shut down the class right after the final was due on the 16th, so I couldn't do any of the surveys he set to be due the 17th. Every single assignment located in canvas is a group project. There are hidden quizzes in MyLab and Mastering, I didn't find them until a couple weeks in.
Do not take this class! Professor Lyste doesn't check his email often, never answered questions I asked him (or made it more confusing), no feedback was given for anything, and takes FOREVER to put things in the gradebook. Nothing is consistent in the class, and there were 10 quizzes that popped up out of nowhere he didn't mention anything about :(
This professor was also my councilor. I was a running start student so when it came time to apply for graduation I needed some help filling out the application and paper work and I emailed him many times and all he would say is look on star fish and I should be able to do it myself.
Didnt put due dates on assignments, didnt have them on the calendar or assignment page. Had to go on a wild chase to find them after realizing I missed three weeks worth of projects. Grades arent shown in canvas, he disabled it. The Pearson website is used religiously and is not helpful and hard to use, and 100 dollars. Doesnt respond to emails
You have group projects in an online class. Mr. Lyste hasn't even graded the project from week 2 and the quarter is almost over. He gives you no feedback and makes you buy a website for $120 dollars just because. We didn't even use the text book. The class was pretty easy but don't expect to know your grade until the very end of the quarter.
If you want to learn anything about geography do not take this class. The professor does not communicate, he posts a few announcements at the beginning of the quarter but after that you don't hear from him at all, this includes grading which he doesn't do until the end of the quarter. Every assignment he posts is confusing and feels like busy work.
This class has been completely stressful. One of the biggest things that I did not like was how some of the due dates were due earlier than the module even began, meaning if I was on module 2, an assignment for module 3 would be due the same week while the focus is on module 2. As well as its heavy on group participation, even the final.
Avoid! All assignments except homework were group papers. Midterm was a group midterm in which a group discussion is expected, in order to come to a group consensus on each question. Avoid at almost all cost!! Zero interaction, no lectures, very little actual instruction. AVOID AVOID AVOID
this teachers instructions for group assignments are so confusing. he never answers his emails, he doesn't help give clear instructions, you don't know your grade all quarter, so you don't know if yoy pass till it's too late. do not take this class.
So confusing. After looking back, it's easy to see that the class itself and how it was split up was very straightforward. However, nothing was made clear. Assignment instructions were confusing, barely any feedback was given, and the majority of the work was group projects. He took so long to respond and didn't answer any of the questions asked.
Very difficult. I had to pay $100 just to access the material outside of the college tuition. Emails aren't very helpful as he doesn't check it regularly and when he does they are very short unhelpful emails. Everything is a group project, grades aren't updated regularly, due dates are hard to find. He doesn't really teach, just lets Pearson do it.
Weird grading scale, not engaging lectures, poor course materials.
