For the reputation the chemistry department has here at CSU, MacFarland wasn't a bad teacher at all, though the class was pretty difficult. Take notes from the book and go to class each day and its definitely manageable.

Professor MacFarland is a great professor. She explained well and made chemistry a lot easier to learn for me than in the past. She's definitely knowledgeable and is more than willing to help you out if you seek that extra help outside of class. Attending class everyday was very helpful.

Kerry is incredible! She's so passionate about the subject. Very kind, sweet woman. Always willing to help you out extra if you need it. She's good about keeping up on the gradebook. Having her definitely made the class more bearable.

Her lectures were always really easy to follow and even the difficult concepts were easy to understand. She teaches in a way that makes the hard stuff seem easy! So long as you come to class and pay attention, you'll do fine!

If you must tough out the chemistry courses here, she is the professor to take them with. Her lectures are excellent and she does lots of examples.

This professor was by far the best teacher I could have gotten for Chem111. This course is tough & challenging, but she goes through every topic thoroughly making it hard for you NOT to understand the material. She writes out everything she says, making it super easy to take notes & follow along. Sign up for the section she teaches!

She writes down everything she says making it super easy to take notes. There is a textbook required for this class but her lectures are so good that you won't have to look at the textbook to pass. She makes the concepts so simple it is hard not to pass with a good grade. After leaving lecture everyday, everything seems like common sense.

I don't know what the other rating are talking about but she is not that great. Her voice is obnoxious and it's an extremely boring class. High school chemistry pretty much. Very hard not to fall asleep during lectures. There's an exam every 3 weeks which is annoying. The chem department here is a trainwreck and needs some serious restructuring.

Dr. MacFarland is a fantastic teacher. She's a little soft-spoken which is a small challenge when the class gets loud. She's easily accessible in office hours and cares about her students. Her tongue-in-cheek/snarky comments in lecture kept me engaged during lecture. A solid choice for anyone trying to make gen chem less painful.

She is very thorough and always gives well prepared lectures. All homework assignments are the same for all sections of 111 which is a somewhat heavy workload. Rewatching her lectures is by far the best way to prepare for the exams. You will do well if you complete all of the HW on time since it is 45% of the final grade.

She was a good teacher and clearly was passionate about chemistry. Went over lots of examples in class and it was helpful to go to lectures. There is a lot of homework in the class so be prepared to work.

Her test are so extremely hard. Usually the average for most tests was between a 55% to 75% so make sure to study a lot. Tons of homework, at least five times a week. Sometimes her lectures could be boring but it was chemistry so I don't blame her for that.

This class was worthless. The focus on actual chemistry is minimal. There are two tests that cover chemistry and I received an F on both and still passed the class with an A+. As for Dr. M, I was frustrated when the class ended and I still hadn't received a grade for my FIRST assignment until two months later. She literally didn't teach us anything

Really good with staying on topic during lectures and giving clear and easy to understand lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but there was at least 2 clicker questions each lecture for points (so semi mandatory if you want those points). Overall really good teacher, would gladly take another class taught by her!

Chemistry is hard but I think Prof Macfarland was the best professor I could have had. She is not by any means going to "entertain" you but she will teach you everything you need to know in a very effective way. She helps as much as she can and wants to see you succeed. Don't be afraid to ask for help because she'll always be willing.

She was a good teacher but her teaching style did not fit for me. Lectures were super boring and could have been explained better. The department is kinda slacking but she is one of the better chem teachers. By far hardest class i have ever taken. DO NOT SKIP OR YOU WILL NOT PASS

This class is less based on your professor and more based on the department. I had a fairly difficult time. LOTS of homework, but that's just the course. Dr. MacFarland is a bit awkward, which is I think why people consider her boring. That being said, she wants you to learn and knows the subject well. Solid choice for this course in my opinion.

She is a great professor and really wants you to succeed and do well. She takes notes with you in class on paper so you know what topics to understand and material to study for exams. She explains things really well but sometimes she moves too fast. Listening to her lectures over and reviewing her notes was helpful. Just do the homework on time!

Good prof.... terribly hard class. Testing makes up 60% of your grade and you can complete all the homework assignments, go to lecture, and attend recitation and still fail the class if you struggle with the material and test poorly. I suggest pairing this course with easily-ish classes in order to succeed.

Kerry is a great professor for CHEM111. She is kind and caring and is willing to work with you. She is very nice and teaches the hard topic of chemistry in an easy to understand way. Any negative review is a reflection of the Chem department as a whole and not her. Make sure to stay on top of your work!

There is a lot of homework in the class, but if yo I do that and attend lecture/recitation, the class is easy. She is easily one of the best professors I have had, doing demonstrations during class and was very understanding with extenuating circumstances. The whole class gave her a standing ovation at the end of the semester.

The content is dry but Kerry explains it very clearly and always takes questions. If you come to class and do the homework, you'll learn what you need to know for the tests. Take advantage of the practice exams on Canvas to be best prepared for tests.

By far the hardest I've ever taken. Attendance isn't "mandatory" , but there are daily clicker questions that influence your grade so definitely show up. The course grade relies heavily on tests, which, if you're like me and get test anxiety, can be tough, but overall I left the class feeling like I had a solid understanding of the material.

Kerry is an incredibly kind and effective teacher. It's very clear that she cares so much about her students and teaching. It's also clear that she's spent a long time refining how and what she teaches in chemistry because she is so clear and systematic with how she introduces material. Overall, excellent instructor and great person.

This class might have been good not online. But Professor MAcFarland has no idea how to teach an online class and it shows. She races through everything, barely explains some concepts, then tests you hard on those concepts. It's quite annoying knowing that when taught right, chem can be a really fun class. This class, however, is not fun.

You can tell MacFarland is caring towards her students. You did not need to attend the zoom meetings as all her lectures were recorded which was nice to review before tests. Pretty average for gen chem, but definitely would recommend over the other chemistry professors. Homework is time consuming, but it is the same for all chem 111 classes.

I thought Dr. McFarland did a good job of translating CHEM111 into an online class. The class was organized and expectations clear. However, I felt that she wasnt very approachable. I went to her office hours and she was a little intimidating and difficult to ask questions to. CHEM111 can be tricky, but if you put in some effort, you will be fine.

Honestly, just take chem at a local community college. If this is the best you're going to get at CSU, it's really not worth the money. Lectures are flown through and you're left holding on for dear life. Exams are 60% of your grade, so let's hope you don't crack under the pressure. Endless amounts of homework, so good luck keeping up.

Great professor! Yes, there is some homework, but it is manageable and honestly helps force you to study as you go along, rather than cramming right before an exam. My best advice is to take notes on the lecture slides BEFORE class whilst doing the hw, so you can actually pay attention during lecture. Great prof and definitely recommend.

Chem is not my subject, and the class SUCKS, but Dr. MacFarland is a great professor. If you reach out, she will help you. She also explains things better than the other profs. SDC took years to get my accommodations through, so she signed off on a larger periodic table for me to use since I can't read the ones on the cover sheets with my dyslexia

This class is set up to help you pass! There's a SmartBook due every Sun, Tues, and Thurs, as well as a Connect every Mon. This seems like a lot, but they're short assignments that give you 4 easy 100%'s every week. Lots of practice, lots of review for exams. If you do the course like you're supposed to, you'll pass with an A, no problem.

MacFarland is very sweet & caring. She wants people to succeed and understand and clearly loves what she does. In my opinion, anybody who gives her a bad rating didn't do the work and is regretful about the consequences so they decide to blame the professor or they don't like the chem dept - which is fair. She's known as the best chem professor.

From what I've heard, there are some pretty rough Chemistry Professors out there. Dr. MacFarland does not fit this description. She breaks down the topics to the simplest ideas, and then asks you to build on those concepts with practice problems during lecture. It's a great way to teach. Just stay on top of the hw and show up!

Dr. Macfarland is a great professor. The lectures are very fast-paced, but she & the LAs walk around & help students with problems. There is a lot of material but as long as you stay caught up you will do well. Students from other classes often come to her lectures instead since she genuinely helps her students learn. Would recommend.

Dr. MacFarland is the best general chemistry professor at CSU. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well in her class. She even told me that I could personally email her when she saw I was struggling on the homework. Definitely try to get her as your general chemistry professor!

Kerry MacFarland is one of the worst professor's I have had while at CSU. Be prepared to do loads of homework on Aleks, and don't plan on her responding to emails. I've gone to her office hours and she made no effort to try and explain the concepts any differently.

Dr. MacFarland has very helpful lectures. Slides are great to study with. I always went to her study hours at the CLeRC specifically because she is great at explaining things one-on-one. There is a lot of homework in this class, but the chem classes are all the same homework and tests, so that is not a reflection on her. Cares about her students!

Dr. MacFarland was absolutely amazing! I wish she taught every chemistry class at CSU. Although there is a lot (A LOT) of homework for this class, it sets you up for success. Highly recommend selecting MacFarland if you can!!

Dr. Macfarland gave very good lectures. She explains things very clearly and makes it clear as well what we need to know for the exams. This class was quite difficult and took up a decent amount of my time, and each lecture contained a lot of content, but I think it would be that way for any chemistry class. None of the work was undoable though.

Dr. MacFarland was a wonderful professor for introductory chemistry, teaching and reenforcing concepts whether you had prior chemistry experience or not. She had easy to follow along with slides and lots of examples to work through together. She's very attentive and aims to help people pass, even going over homework problems in class time.

Had Prof Macfarland for CHEM 111 and she definitely knew how to explain the material in a way that made sense to students. Regardless of teachers, definitely complete the ALEKS HW, it's much harder than the exams so you are kind of used to harder material than what is tested. From what I know, she is one of the best chemistry teachers in comparison

I loved having Dr. MacFarland as a teacher. Her methods of having homework due before the class was so helpful because it made a lot of the information in the lecture make sense. Her participation points in Aktiv Chemistry were very helpful and promoted overall learning. All the work she gives is to help you learn the concepts.

Made the class relatively easy for a subject thats hard to be understood. Fair amount of homework, and let the final replace the lowest test score and a lot of other participation/assignments were dropped at the end to account for nonemergency absences. Would definetly take again.

MacFarland is very caring about her teachings, and there are practice exams for all four exams before the final. She cares that her students succeed, and is always there to help you during her office hours. You can tell she has been teaching for a very long time, and it is easy to become invested in her class.

MacFarland is the best Chem111 professor at CSU she gives good lectures and is available at office hours for help. She has good practice problems and puts together good study materials for exams. But be aware that she, and no other Chem111 professor, will go out of their way to help you or your grade.

This class is set up so you can succeed (but she is the only teacher for CHEM111 that does this). The homework before lecture & the slides & class participation questions & online homework problems help you learn content. She is very helpful in office hours (3 days per week). Her resources for test prep are amazing-- specifically the practice tests

Take her if possible out of the other chem professors. HOWEVER, be warned that she will NOT round grades at all even if you are very close to an A. She was unhelpful outside of class & didn't really respond to emails. Her lectures were good compared to the other professors, but that is not too high of a bar LMAO. She was ok, nothing to rave about.

Amazing Teacher! She covered the material clearly, and she used strategies that would further help our learning. My favorite part of this class was when she allowed students to talk to each other, this furthered our understanding of the concepts.

Kerry is an amazing professor and person. She teaches thoroughly but does require that you put work into her class. I technically didn't have Dr. MacFarland as a teacher, but Dr. Grey was so bad I went to her class for the second half of the semester. She is a much better teacher than him and organizes her class well, I would recommend her.

She is an amazing professor! She made chemistry so much easier to understand and her lectures were extremely helpful! I would highly recommend taking her class!

MacFarland is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. If you ever have the option to take her class, DO IT. She is very good in lectures and the way she has her homework laid out is amazing. There is a lot of reading on the SmartBook and the Aleks homework can be annoying but if you stay on top of it you will do amazing in the class.

She is great at making chemistry understandable, and the exams are not that bad if you study for them. She uses Aktiv so you have to go to class to get participation points, but it really helped me understand what we were learning. There is a lot of homework outside of class though, ALEKS assignments & multiple smartbook assignments every week.

Absolutely amazing. She made chem interesting and you can tell she really cares about the subject. She also explains things well and is very nice. Study for the tests, do the ALEKS homework, go to recitation, and use AKTIV during class and you will be fine.

McFarland is an excellent teacher, this class is extremely information dense , if you do read the smart book assignments before class and attend or watch the lectures online you will have no problem with this class, if you fall behind though you will be screwed, overall best teacher I've seen, gives you so many tools just use them.

She's amazing. However, I hated my CHEM 112 TA. Do not take Heidi Kreckel! CHEM 111 is a lot of busy work. Go to lecture, do the homework, and you'll do great!

If you are financially struggling, this class does not help. She has us buy the online textbook, buy a specific calculator, buy an app for in class participation (instead of using iClicker for free). She is a good teacher but pricey.

Professor MacFarland is a great teacher and makes a difficult class easier to understand. You do have to answer questions during lecture for credit so don't skip too much, but you can watch ones you miss online. She makes sure to teach what is on the exams and let you know what to expect. She wants all her students to succeed.

Great teaching style, she's super clear about what will be on tests, etc. Chem 111 is inherently a tricky class but she makes sure you know about all the resources and support you have! You definitely need to show up to lecture to feel like you have a handle on things. The way she explains confusing concepts makes them accessible, super helpful.

The best professor I have ever had. She lectures quite quickly, but after the first week you get used to it. She relates everything to real-world examples and gives incredible lectures. Professor is great. Went to her office hours often, and she was very patient. USE THE LA's, CLERC, AND TILT. They will save you for this class. The hardest thing about this class is that it is very easy to make mistakes. Practice exams and lots of exam prep was very very useful!!

I love her. Her TAs are great and she made me understand the concepts of chemistry. No complaints as long as you grasp the topics the tests are easy. I will say she talks a little fast, but I understood. There is a lot of busy work, but that builds upon what you're learning in class.

I took this class a few semesters ago and still remember Dr. MacFarland as one of the best professors ever. I started this class with a different professor, who was awful. I ended up switching over to her class in the middle of the semester and was able to bring my grade up because of her teaching. You can stream class and answer clickers remotely.

Dr.MacFarland is a very good professor. She is very knowledgeable and helpful in teaching concepts. Chem 111 is WAY too easy if you took AP Chem, so beware. Concepts are very easy to understand when she teaches. Lots of online homework though! You can do the Aleks at home, but it is time restricted, so beware.

Best chem prof by far. Her teaching style works great, she makes learning chem easy and prepares you for the tests Clerc. Office hours and TILT help a lot if ur confused. Show up to class, do homeworks, and study and you'll do great. Take her class over the other professors shes the best. People with other professors really struggled in this class.

Objectively you will not find a better CHEM 111 professor at this school. I'm not like in love with her or her teaching style (although it is good), but if you have the option you need to take her for CHEM 111. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS. the questions are SO similar and some of the practice exam questions are word for word on the exams.

Her teaching style was not for me. The lectures were quick, we would barely touch a topic and move on. Had to purchase a membership instead of using iClicker for free. Overall grade depended on exams. A lot of HW, but it accounted for 10%. It may be a mix of her teaching style and the course itself, just was not my favorite. She does care, though.

MacFarland seems very sweet but it's hard to keep the room engaged with 200+ students so it was really hard to hear her. She also just throws Aktiv problems at you and then runs through the explanations quickly. TBH I didn't go to a single lecture after the first exam, taught myself all of the content using the textbook, and will pass with an A.

Absolutely adored this professor, its a flipped classroom style class and its gen chem so its not the easiest but if you attend the lectures you'll get an A. She's a great lecturer, it can get a little boring but honestly she explains really well and hosts helpful reviews before tests. I had friends from other classes come to learn from her.
