Great instructor! She comes off a little stiff and unfriendly but she warms up. It's a lot of reading but you learn a ton so definitely take her.
She is one of the nicest professors I have ever met. I am glad to have her as my soc 142 professor. There will be lots of reading involved and you will need to turn in a paper each week. Also there is this book you need to purchase but the downside is that you can't return it anywhere. I recommend her to anyone.
Professor Woodward is very intimidating and very unapproachable. Attendance is mandatory. Reading must be done every week before class. Contrary to what the previous poster said, you only turn in 5 one page papers. The midterm is a 5-6 page paper. If you can avoid her, do it.
You will not be dissappointed if you take Professor Woodward. She is great and her whole objective is whether or not you understand the course material. You must do the readings and then turn in a one page synopsis of the articles and your opinion. This class is not difficult. She just wants you to "get" inequality if you prove you get it the class
Professor Woodward gives out several online quizzes, in class theres video responses. overall its not that bad. she graded hard on the 5 page midterm though but overall you learn a lot and should be fairly easy to get at least a B.
I must have found the center in the village of idiots. "Unapproachable," and "Stiff and unfriendly?" She's not your mommy, for chrissakes; she's your professor. If you want someone to constantly fawn and preen over you and tell you how utterly awesome you are, you either need to seek long-term therapy or else hire a hoo(k)er.
Great teacher one of the best in my opinion at CSULB I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER do your work and readings and you are bound to get B or A
taking two classes with Woodward at the same time (142 and 320). she's very helpful and very passionate about what she teachers. Just attend class, read the text and write the commentaries required and you should be fine =) definitely recommend her.
She took attendance daily, very avid on participation. Few opportunites for EC, one midterm paper, intimidating final, but if you listen and study you will be fine. A lot of reading every week and 10 commentaries (you do them at you own pace). Never boring. Final is 30% of grade. I really enjoyed her class, got a B.
The best professor I've ever had. She teaches very clearly and effectively and is passionate about her class [I took 142, taking 320 this semester]. She's one of those few professors you can really look up as a good person who genuinely cares about people. The class was not easy, but it is the most relevant class I have taken.
Definitely agree with one of the commenters that said she's one of the best professors at CSULB. Her passion just beams. She' a committed professor who shows great concern for her students. extremely intelligent and caring. she has a heart of gold, really. loved her!
very organized and was always prepared for classes. Very passionate about what she teachers. BUT she can be very snappy at times and comes of very strongly. She gets defensive when you dont have the same views as her. She has weekly write ups (8 of them) that were very annoying that requires a lot of reading. 1 5-7 pg paper. her final is HARD!!!!!!
Great professor, hard class. Get ready to read your butt off the entire semester. Fun topics at times, just difficult to comprehend. Final is very difficult. As long as you keep up on the readings and attend class you should be okay.
Good Teacher, sometimes lecture gets boring, but attend class. She is very passionate. 1 midterm, 1 paper, & an online "midterm"
Woodward is one of those professors who are very passionate in what they teach! Her class could be hard, readings are mandatory, but you will learn a lot in her class. Lectures are interesting and tests are not hard if you pay attention and read. Take her!
This is a professor that is very passionate about what she teaches. She comes off as kind of agressive, but she's really not. She keeps the class interesting. You might even change your major to sociology after taking this class. You can pass with an A if you do the weekly readings and pass the short exams. I recommend this class to everyone!
This class was very difficult. Two take-home midterms (not easy) with each 2 essays. Final 4 id's & 4 essays (most short answer). She's very passionate but tends to look at you as if you're dumb when asking questions. HARD CLASS.
Professor Woodward is absolutely wonderful! All of the reading is really engaging and she teaches with such intensity. Not an "easy A", but an eye-opening course.
If you go to every class and take notes there is no way you won't pass. She does a summary in the beginning of every lecture (VERY HElPFUL). Make sure you do the reading, which is a lot but not impossible to be done. She's very passionate about the subject and really cares if you understand the material. I would highly recommend taking her.
If one embraces all theories she supports, should be ok. However, if you are found to question/doubt any of her beliefs, you will likely be bullied and tagged. States at the beginning of class she welcomes open dialogue. However, appears only the case if your views reflect hers. Hoped to engage in solutions for society, but only another blame game.
Amazing teacher. The work is tough but if you do it you will learn so much. Kids who say she's a bully just don't like the fact that she challenged their narrow, naive views of the world.
She is quite intimidating and can answer questions in a condescending tone, although I don't believe it's on purpose. The class has a lot of work so I'd only suggest taking her's if you're actually interested in the subject.
She is a great teacher, do all the work including the extra credit and you should be fine and don't wait last minute or your screwed becasue work piles up quick. attendence=MANDATORY otherwise you might be confused on exams. Reading and textbook is also mandatory but she makes her own textbook so its way cheaper. Totaly recommend her. Can't be lazy
Not an easy A & although she can be intimidating, she always made time for her students. Attendance is mandatory, which I didnt mind because she breaks down the material for you. 2take home papers, 3 inclass exams including final. Books will be used! Definitely Recommend!
Quite disappointing. Students that node in agreement should be fine. However, if you make the mistake of participating and question any of the theories, taught as fact, you will be bullied, and will cost you on essays. Priority is to indoctrinate, not to teach.
The class is very hard. if you do not keep up with the crazy amount of readings you will fall behind. Her two take home essays were difficult but if you follow the power points that she posts you should be fine. The midterm and finals are very hard too. She is a really great teacher though.
Dr Woodward can be condescending at times, but she means well. Ask her a question and she will stop her lecture to answer. Keep up with the readings; it may be a long and tedious process, but it is the only way to understand her lectures. Dont miss class because each lecture is highly important. Get to know her. She's not as terrifying as you think
Professor Woodward does a great job teaching this class. I can guarantee you will walk out with a world of knowledge that you might otherwise not learn from other classes. She holds students to high standards instead of letting everyone scoot by with minimal effort. As long as you go to lecture, put the work in, and remain engaged you can get an A.
Take this class if you really want to learn. Most students rating low were probably lazy. She gives you very clear instructions, and it's just a matter of paying attention and doing the work.
There is a lot of reading involved in this class! You must understand and read them to pass the class. I personally don't like this class at all. She grades really hard on her essays (2 essays). I did learn a lot in this class but lots of reading....I took it because of everyone's positive ratings... mistake!
This class was pretty difficult considering it was only a level 100 course.. Be an active student when attending the lectures. There is a lot of material to take in but the subjects and topics covered were interesting. She is a tough grader but her lectures were pretty easy to follow.
I was going to drop the class in the beginning since I enrolled late and was already behind. She is a great professor, she definitely makes you earn your grade. She is clear and very caring. She is not a hard grader she just tells you the truth if you do not know how to write. Overall I'm glad I stayed in the class I learned so much. A lot of e/c.
A lot of reading for an intro class, but she goes over it every week. The material is interesting and it'll be relevant to you even after the class is over.
Lots of readings and questions for every class meet. They are helpful take down the page number it will help in your final paper. Show up to every class and take clear notes, they will help! She's very helpful & wants you to succeed take advantage of her office hours & ask questions. The class is not scary, just commit to it you will survive.
The material in class is extremely intriguing You do commentaries each week for which you have to read a lot of articles but are interesting some r long Her exams are somewhat WORDY but if you study of course you’ll do fine There is this take home essay better do good on that! she believes that college shouldn’t be easy, so she makes you work hard
This class has so many LONG readings and weekly commentaries to do each week! If you don't understand the readings there really isn't any time to catch up. The class is interesting but the work is too hard for a general class especially if you're a freshman. Pick a different professor honestly if you struggle sometimes in classes.
A fair chunk of writing and readings so it isn't the easiest class but one does learn a lot. Plenty of extra credit opportunities which is cool. Lectures are really interesting too.
This class is difficult but absolutely worth it! Woodward expects nothing but the best from you and if you try, you'll do fine. Plus she's very helpful and patient. Remember to read the articles, keep up with the weekly assignments and STUDY for the tests. I can't stress enough how much I love this class; it changed my views on everything.
Prof Woodward is very passionate & knowledgeable about social theory. It can be a difficult class to understand & she can get really frustrated with everyone, but she is still a great professor. Lots & lots of reading. Reading questions twice a week, 2 tests & a final all in essay form. Also an analysis paper that kicks everyone's butt.
She's very clear in what she wants from students but due to the class material being so hard to understand she gets clearly frustrated with everyone. She's helpful but at the same time intimidating and often will talk down to the students, I wouldn't recommend her class she expects a lot if you're not willing to commit drop the class.
I took this class as a freshman & I love this class, however, its really difficult for those who just want to get easy As in their classes. I took a harder class in high school than this one, so it was no problem for me. But there is A LOT of reading each week. studying is a MUST for tests. Grades hard on your paper too so do well on it.
No textbook to purchase, just an iclicker. She provides literature that is available online. This professor is AMAZING and OUTSTANDING. She knows a great deal of information and always available to students. Definitely take her if you have the opportunity, you will not regret it. Sure, there's a a lot of homework, but they compliment the lectures.
This class requires a lot of readings and briefs based on those readings. It is time consuming class, but it is not hard. She provides a study guide for exams. She is a GREAT professor. She knows her stuff and is up-to-date with current events. If you love sociology, you will love her. One of the best sociology professors at CSULB. Overall, easy A.
Very passionate, it's clear she teaches from a distinctly establishment liberal POV i.e. she teaches very little academicMarxist theory and more readings from the NationMSNBC excerpts, which hindered the sociological extent of what we learned. A lot of homeworkarticle readings, one take home paper and easy tests. Difficult for a lower div class.
As a professor I am not sure how she is but as an advisor she is not very good. I have gone to her time and time again and she doesn't really help or make suggestions as to what we should do next. she does check your progress towards graduation but aren't all the advisors supposed to do that? she does not go above and beyond to explain courses
Currently under special topics but, Poverty & Public Policy will be its own class soon. Lots of reading, no tests or quizzes, 3 short essays, & 1 paper. She is basically giving you UC quality education for CSU costs, teaching you v important critical thinking skills, teaching w passion, and really cares about her students. Highly recommended.
A very knowledgeable professor! Tough grader and a lot of people seem to be scared of her, but she is approachable. She really does make you work for the grade you think you deserve
Dr. Woodward's class is difficult, there's no way around it! But she is passionate about Sociology and will guide you through it. She doesn't want any of her students to fail but will make you work for the grade that you want. I highly recommend her. She's brilliant. There are reading questions, 3 exams, and an application paper.
. yes she is passionate about the subject, but honestly makes you break a sweat throughout the course. Readings are long and hard to comprehend if you don't read it twice. she gives you questions for hw, for every class you attend based on the readings. Clear to a certain extent. 3 exams hard balls. application paper due at the end of the semester
She is my favorite professor that I've had. Her passion, devotion, and fervor can be overwhelming sometimes, but it was really inspirational for me. She really knows her stuff and really cares about people and her students. Ton of work, but super interesting and in-depth. Real learning. There were moments in her class that were very moving.
Woodward is a winner of a professor. If you take her class, you will learn... a lot. This class has taught me more than any other class I've taken in my collegiate career, but it was also the most homework. She cares about your grades, and will answer any questions you have clearly and kindly. She knows a lot, and just wants to share it with you.
I've never had such an ego-driven professor before, she loves putting one-upping students. Office hours was just her criticizing me and not offering constructive criticism. She gives out assigned readings every class, is unclear on the exam ( Only 1 person got a B, the rest Cs,Ds,Fs) . I would ask questions but it was clear she picked her favorites
She will make you feel stupid and does not allow any room for a different opinion or thought but her own. Says office hours are always available but makes you feel like you're the issue. She does know a lot but I respect a professor that knows a lot and is humble in teaching and makes her students want to learn not the opposite. Don't Risk it!!!!
I'm going to keep it real - She is a great lecturer. That I'll give her. I can't call her a bad lecturer. BUT, she is a very tough grader so make sure you go to her office hours before a paper is due to show her your draft & you should be good. Limited extra credit. Do all the HW (HW is not graded, just done for credit) bc every point counts!
She makes this class way harder then it needs to be. You must read everything she assigns to pass the class. This class is very time consuming. Three take home exams and Three papers but you must describe everything in detail to get full points on her exams and papers. I withdrew this class and took it with an easier professor.
A winner of a professor? Lol! I'm starting to think all the positive reviews are written by herself. She's such a tough grader I honestly don't know what she wants. Lectures whole class. Pretty woman but no way I'll take any other class with her. Too confusing and tough grader.
Professor Woodward is a good choice for classical theory. When doing the readings, anything i didnt understand became clear when she lectured! Shes a bit tough but is always willing to go the extra mile to help you understand. You can tell shes a mom because of her jokes and also because shell push you but only because she knows you can do it.
I would advise people to avoid this class at all costs. She makes you do tons of HW, grades as if you're a graduate student and loves to prove everybody wrong. There are way easier writing intensive courses that I wish I could have taken. If you do decide to take her, good luck. You're gonna need it.
This class was a very an easy A. There's homework every week. Her class is pure lecture, if you write down every word that comes out of her mouth, you will get an A on every essay for sure!
Lectures are not structured well and very difficult to follow. Must be able to type/write as fast as she speaks because she expects you to understand/master the material after explaining it once. Exams are long essays that are graded very critically. Teaching style was not for me.
straight to the point, this is not an easy class so if you're looking for an easy A, it is not here. Professor Woodward is an amazing professor and has intense lectures, but they really help you understand the material! You have to go to class or you will be lost! She is not interested in failing students but you must work hard and earn your grade
Professor Woodward is one of the toughest professors Ive ever had. Her lectures are heavy loaded & its hard to understand her theories. Homework every single day! It was difficult to keep up with what she wanted, shes a really hard grader. I dont mean to be mean but if there is another professor I recommend taking them over her.
Be prepared to read a lot. 100+ pages of readings a week are pretty normal. The readings go in depth and challenge many preconceived notions people have about poverty. There is a 15 page paper due at the end of semester however she guides you through the process and helps you along the way. Challenging but worth it.
She is a very tough grader and it's hard enough to understand the material as it is. She goes well with explaining the material in class but it's hard to really grasp an understanding once leaving class. 3 paper "tests," 3 essay papers, homework due every class session, and alot of reading. If you dont read or miss class you wont pass.
My FAVORITE professor at CSULB. This class has made me a better student and inspired me to push myself farther than i thought possible. I feel truly transformed by having taken her, and she is an integral part of my education overall.
She is one of the best professors at CSULB. She is extremely passionate and will make you feel that way too. There is a decent amount of reading, but she has guided reading questions that help lead you so sometimes you can skim. I am a non sociology major and still was successful/enjoyed the course. She really wants her students to succeed.
Nice lady, difficult prof. Lectures were VERY hard to follow as she just kind of scribbles notes on the board without any powerpoint to organize or guide her. The material is very difficult and she crams a lot of info into lectures. Expects you to learn the material on your own by reading beforehand, and the readings are way too long and complex.
Don't take her if you aren't willing to work hard, but with that being said, she is by far the best professor I have had at CSULB. She is very approachable, as long as you work for your grade. This is a class where you might not understand the material the first time around, so attendance and participation in discussions is key.
Woodward is one demanding professors that expects nothing but determination and greatness from her students. A great lecturer, knows what's she's teaching, but very difficult to reach the level of approval she has for set for her students. Wise professor that does not enjoy students watching star wars in her class. 4 exams, and no room for error.
Let me get straight to the point, she is a nice person, but she is an extremely hard grader. In the beginning of the class she kept saying that this class was going to be very hard and she was right. She does not have power points, she writes everything on the board.. (has really bad penmanship . Taking good notes is a must in the class.
Reading due for every class. pop quizzes. extremely hard grader. I once asked her where in the book can I find the answer for a question on the take home exam and she said just read the book. yeah no duh! so won't go out of her way to help you. theres also a group project.
Woodward has singlehandedly made me a better student. She's dedicated to providing her students a quality education, giving you feedback that enhances your skill set. This class will make you realize where your determination lies. If you're one to give up easily, this class is not for you, but if you want to learn and be a better student, take it!
This review is for Honors, but if you get any opportunity to take a class with Woodward, DO IT! I have taken classical theory, poverty and public policy and honors with her and she has singlehandedly made me a better student. She has pushed me in every class and given me the guidance to excel. I am more informed about issues that matter bc ofher
She is very passionate about the subject which is really nice. However, there is required reading and questions as homework for every class. For lecture, she does not use powerpoint, her handwriting is SO MESSY! 2 exams an in class essay and a take home essay. Grading criteria is unclear. Class average for our first exam was a 60%. NO curve.
This class should not be taken if you work full time and have a full load of classes. There are hundreds of pages that need to be read every week and sometimes you need to start and finish a book in a weekend. There are reading questions due at the beginning of every class and a large research paper due at the end. Attendance plays a big part.
You really have to show up for every class or you won't pass. Try to take notes on everything she says! She is one of the hardest professors I've ever had but is really passionate about the material. Tough grader, is not afraid to let you know you're wrong, and be prepare to have tons of homework. Only take her if you're only focusing on school.
The absolute worse sociology professor in Long Beach, forces her beliefs down your throats. You basically don't have an opinion in that class. Is not considerate at all. And she is impossible to please. Discussions normally take an hour of your time, her discussions take up 5 hours of your time. ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR BEWARE
The absolute worst professor. CSULB would be perfect if she didn't work there
Took the class with her in my senior year of undergrad. Tons of reading and writing involved. Yes she makes you work for your grade and expects nothing but the best. Again this is an upper division class and most of you are soc majors. Grad school will be 5 times or 10 times harder. Very knowledgeable and approacheable outside class. Recommend.
Class of 2019 here, Woodward does not understand her student's might not have equal access to time or resources and has a one lens fits all student. I worked 2 jobs and had a 40 minute commute only for her to say, study more. If i can go back with my PhD, i'd roast Woodward to put her in her place.
EXTREMELY black-and-white thinker. Jumps to conclusions about students' backgrounds and politics, and grades accordingly.
I was in the department honors program in 2020 and I know a lot of people are bashing her but you have to be a hard worker and very good academically to understand. She is a tough grader but only because she is passionate about making her students better. If you want to better yourself and your research, she is an amazing professor to do just that.
If you want a professor who doesn't know what she's talking about, reads straight from the powerpoint, and sits on her high horse, take this professor. Condescending and there are so many other sociology professors who actually know what they are teaching and know how to connect with students.
It's really not worth it to take a professor this hard in a field like Sociology. It's a waste of time that will add a lot of opportunity cost in the long run. Also, from the previous posts, it looks like Woodward only learned to use PowerPoint recently, and now she ONLY uses PowerPoint. This doesn't say much about what she offers as an educator.
Not for the weak. Heavy reading and pushes your sociological application. Pro she gives a lot of feedback for papers and exams. If you fix those issues you can get an A. The first quiz will tell you if you should stay in the class, she allows an index card of notes. She is a very hard grader, Seriously. Go to office hours! If offers rewrite, do it!
avoid at all cost, save your gpa. she is not understanding of students jobs and outside of school responsibilities. She assigns a lot of weekly reading, requires mandatory attendance or your grade drops and has in-class written exams that need to be to the T in order to get full credit/ points for it. She doesnt teach she just reads off her slides
