Very clear expectations and projects. Attend lectures, do homework, watch test reviews and you will be prepared for the assessments and all assignments. Field trips were engaging and fun! Professor Ross is an absolute gem, she is caring and willing to work with everyone!
Professor Ross is fantastic! She is super enthusiastic about what she does, and it makes the class enjoyable even if you are taking it for a GE. She really cares about her students, and she is always open to feedback. Exams are written clearly and are not difficult if you go to TA reviews.
Professor Ross
Sister Ross is extremely caring and kind. Her lectures are interesting and organized. Labs are fun and supplement lecture learning. Weekly reading quizes and midterms are online and open note. She gives lots of opportunities for extra credit.
She is awesome. She is super understanding and flexible. Easy to work with and one of my favorite teachers.
Professor Ross is actually a wonderful teacher! She is very passionate about her subject and is also takes good care of her students. I learned a lot about gems in her GEOL105 class, more than I expected I would. You can get a good grade if you want it. I wish more generals at BYU were like her class.
Professor Ross is a fantastic instructor, and I loved taking her class. Reading is pretty light, and assignments are pretty easy as long as you put in a little bit of effort. Lectures are super fun and entertaining.
Sister Ross and her TA's are really great! They're very understanding and they are willing to help you succeed. It's also a really cool class to take to learn so much about gems and diamonds. The only thing that I kind of wished was different is that the labs require outside of class time to go in and work on them.
Sister Ross was amazing! She really cares about your grades and wants to give everyone a chance to succeed. For this class, I would recommend to focus on getting good grades on the quizzes. This will help cushion your grade when tests come around. If you attend her class and the test review session, you are in good hands for the test.
This is a class if you work hard enough you should be able to get an A. The class offers multiple extra credit opportunities that can help your grade if you dont do well on the test or labs.
Keryn is super kind and caring but the class is hard becasue if you don't really care about diamonds and gems it is very boring and the labs can sometimes be hard and that can be annoying.
Professor Ross is awesome! She obviously cares greatly about her students and wants them to succeed. I am an international relations major and hate geology/science but she made it enjoyable so that's 10/10 right there. The class isn't that hard. Just go to the lectures, take good notes, and study for the exams and you'll be fine.
Sister Ross did a wonderful job teaching Geology. The course material was interesting and engaging. We had readings and an open-book quiz due before each lecture, a creative research project (well organized and adaptable), and midterms and a final (not too hard, attend TA reviews and review lecture notes). I took this course in Fall 2023.
There is a lot of work in this class, but she makes it so fun and is really willing to help you understand. Exams are all open book and open note but can still be kind of tricky. This was such a fun class and the labs were super fun but a bit tricky but if you reach out to the TA's they are always happy to help you. Highly recommend this class
I loved Sister Ross! Go on the field trip because it was so fun and so much extra credit! This class is a lot of work in the lab, but you truly feel like a gemologist by the end of the semester. The TAs are super helpful, and I recommend this class to anyone who wants a physical science requirement covered.
Sister Ross is so kind and passionate about the subject! Her lectures had cool connections to real-life places and events that always kept it engaging and interesting. There is a field trip and a research project (geology-related topic of your choice). Keep up with the chapter quizzes and utilize the test reviews and you'll be fine! Great GE class!
Easy to get the grade you want. Course expectations are clear and easy to follow.
Very great professor. Expect reading and reading quizzes weekly, and also a bigger project.
She is one of my favorite professors ever. She truly cares about every student and will go out of her way to let you know that! She is passionate about her teaching and makes learning so exciting! I'm so sad to be leaving her class after this semester!
Keryn is an awesome professor. She cares deeply about both geology and her students. The class is easy if you do the readings and the study guides prepare you well for the tests.
Keryn is awesome. She is very passionate about what she teaches. It is an easy class just make sure you do the work it's not hard but also not just busy work you will learn through labs and of course the lectures. The optional fieldtrip was a lot of fun highly recommend going. This is a great way to earn a GE.
This class was is by far my favorite GE I have taken. Sister Ross is very understanding and cares greatly about her students. The tests are open note and the labs are really interesting. My biggest advice is to go on the extra credit field trip, not only for the points, but because it's so much fun!
Professor Ross is amazing. She's very caring for her students and actually wants you to succeed. Go to lecture and you will get a good grade. If you want a chill fun professor you found them.
To get an idea about who Keryn is as a person, she invited us all to her house for Thanksgiving - seriously the sweetest! I love her enthusiasm towards everything gem related! I will say though, labs really picked up towards the end of the semester - I was spending 5-6 hours a week in the lab. But overall, would definitely recommend!
Sister Ross is the kindest human and she's passionate about what she does! The class is SO fascinating and hands on. One of my favorite classes I've taken in a long time.
Keryn is great! Don't take this class if you don't like doing labs outside of class. I had a lot of stuff come up this semester so I didn't appreciate the labs as much as I would've otherwise. But it is super cool to get to look and touch so many diamonds and gems!
Diamonds and Gems is a great GE. I learned a lot from the lectures and the labs. Sister Ross cares a lot about her students and wants them to succeed.
Sister Ross is so amazing! She really cares for her students and loves the topic. It was so fun being in her class. The labs can be a lot of work, but they are really generous with the grades. It was an overall great experience. Would definitely recommend taking this class for one of your science GEs.
I hate geology but I loved this class. Sister Ross is an amazing teacher, and I feel like I learned so much about rocks and our Earth. Had a few field trips outside of class, but they were cool. The only downside is that this class has mandatory attendance, which is hard if you're taking it earlier in the morning.
Sister Ross is a GEM! (pun intended) If you need a science GE this is the class. The labs are fun and teach a lot, and her tests are open book which helped me internalize the content more than cramming facts. She loves what she does, and her TAs were so helpful. Some of the labs involve a lot of outside class work.
I loved her class! She is super passionate in each lecture and wants you to succeed!
Taking this class was one of the best decisions I've made at BYU. Sister Ross' lectures are engaging and she cares so much about us. She gave us her phone number and would always text me back right away when I had a question. This class is set up for you to succeed. Tests and Quizzes are open notes, open lecture slides, and open internet!
I love Sister Ross and she loves her students too! She makes class so fun and captivating. I am genuinely interested in gems now because of her class. The labs are pretty easy, and all the quizzes/midterms are so easy to study for! (open book)
She is passionate about geology and tries to make it as interesting as possible! She is just a fun and funny professor. However, there is a lot of material to cover. The class itself is really not that difficult, you just have to put the work into studying. The only other thing that was difficult sometimes was the graded participation.
Sister Ross is a fantastic professor and she gives a very manageable course load, even from someone who is not strong in STEM. There is a lot to learn, but it's very doable, there's no essays, open book reading quizzes, and really good study guides and review sessions. 10/10
Professor Ross is super kind, and the class is very interesting!
She's honestly so fun and personable. She's always energetic which makes the class so enjoyable. You learn so much in the lectures and labs. You need to make sure you're staying on top of assignments, but that's really not too hard with this class. The labs were so informative. This class made me want to change my major! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
She is so passionate about what she teaches and it's so cool! You do have to do a lot of lab hours but its worth it because its so interesting!
A great class with straightforward studying and tests - super interesting material as well. She is very passionate about her work, and it shows.
Dr. Ross was great. I find geology pretty boring, but she is very passionate and excited about the subject, and made it interesting enough for me to sometimes not have glazed-over eyes. There's a decent amount of homework, but it's all pretty easy to do. Super cool and generous grader. Would reccomend.
Sister Ross is so enthusiastic about diamonds and gems!! My only complaint is that the tests were open book and open note, and yet on the 2nd midterm the high was a 96%, with the average in the 70s. That just doesn't seem right for a 100 level class. But she does offer a lot of extra credit so if you do that you can easily get the grade you want!
Sister Ross is so so great! She really loves what she teaches! The only thing about this class is that lab can sometimes be frustrating/annoying. I expected lab time to be spent doing actual labs, but the TA's give a lecture on how to do the labs, so you have to come in outside of class to work on labs.
Professor Ross is amazing! She genuinely cares for her students and makes class and labs super engaging. The course is pretty easy and there are lots of extra credit opportunities.
Sister Ross was amazing, she has quizzes due before each class so don't forget! I highly recommend going on the field trip, it was so fun and relaxing.
If you need to take a Geology Class take it with Professor Ross! She is the most kindhearted and enthusiastic professor I have ever had. She gets so excited about what she is teaching. The quizzes every week are super easy (you can take them as many times as you want), and the assignments aren't very difficult.
Sister Ross is an awesome! You can tell she loves her subject and her students. She has lots of extra credit. Her exams are open note and internet. Because of this, she does make them harder. Be prepared to spend time on the labs outside of class. Don't buy the textbook, you can find it at the library. If you put in the work, you'll get an A.
Professor Ross is very capable and incredible! She is a great teacher. This class is also a perfect GE if you need to take it. I only spent 2 hours outside class doing work every week and finished with a high A. The content isn't that interesting in my opinion but I learned a few cool facts that I will take with me.
This class is fine just expect outside work in class. It is easy the exams are open note, open internet but the questions are IMPOSSIBLE to find anywhere. Very frustrating. Good time but would never take again.
Sister Ross is super passionate about gemology which makes this class fun. Her TA's are super well selected too. I've learned from this class that I'm not a huge fan of geology, but the teaching of the subject and the value of what I learned were both superb.
Dr. Ross was such a fun professor! She is clearly very passionate about geology, which made the class more enjoyable even though I'm not usually a fan of the hard sciences. The exams are open internet! The labs can be a little bit time consuming, but they really helped me learn the course material.
Sister Ross is extremely understanding, kind, and passionate. Her midterms and final are closed book, but it is things that you have been tested on in the open book mini quizzes. Her lectures are so fun to go to because of how passionate she is.
Pretty easy. Teacher was super nice
Sister Ross is a fantastic teacher! Her class is fun even if you don't like geology. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities and she is always willing to help when you have questions.
She's an amazing professor who really cares about her students. Its a pretty easy class as long as you stay on top of assignments and spend a good amount of time studying
Keryn Ross is a great lady, but not the most organized in the classroom. Lots of little busy work assignments that don't actually build your knowledge. Also, the exams are open-note, open-internet... however, so many of the questions are very poorly written which makes the exam much harder than it needs to be.
Professor Ross is a super awesome and very passionate about what she teaches! The quizzes and exams were open note and book. Some of the labs were a bit time consuming and had to be completed outside of class time. The extra credit field trip at the end of the semester was super cool and definitely lots of fun!
Such a kind, understanding professor who is extremely accommodating. You will learn a lot from this class, but also be challenged. Know that labs and exams are very time consuming. Keryn's lectures are super engaging and she really cares about her students. Space really is limited in the class though so add it asap if you're planning on taking it.
I love Sister Ross! Lots of extra credit opportunities and even a field trip where you get to mine for topaz. The labs are fun but time-intensive. Sister Ross is super kind and helpful.
Sister Ross is the best! She is one of the kindest people I've met. The class was interesting & I learned a lot, however, the labs can be tricky & take a lot of time. Besides the labs, the homework wasn't too bad & the tests were open note!
Sister Ross is great! It is an easy class and is actually pretty interesting. Go to class and lab. TAs are great too. You get what you put in for this class. You can learn a lot if you want to, but if you slack off you won't learn anything. Easy A.
Sister Ross is awesome! She wants you to succeed and gives you the resources to do so. The tests are open book, open slides, and open internet. Some labs weren't my favorite but they weren't too difficult. Sister Ross and the TAs are super helpful so if you ever need help in the lab, reach out to them. If you're looking to take this as a GE, DO IT!
She's nice, passionate about this subject. She's really willing to help you out!
This was a very interesting class! There is an attendance grade and labs can be a bit time consuming but very manageable.
LOVE this professor, but the class was difficult for me. But Professor Ross's love for gems and diamonds will rub off on you.
I really enjoyed this class and felt like I learned a lot throughout the semester. You need to go to all the labs, so be aware of that, but they are usually really fun. She did zoom class time, so if you needed, you could watch those lectures instead of going in person.
Dr. Ross was one of the most caring and understanding teachers I have ever worked with! She made sure that we could succeed even when life got crazy during the semester. Her class was the perfect level of difficulty for a GE while still being a cool class where you got to learn. Lectures were good, tests were easy (and open book) and labs were fun!
She's super good just stay ahead of the labs (like I didn't lol) and you will be totally fine
Prof Ross is such a good lecturer. I was never bored during her lectures and made everything so interesting. Easy quizzes that help you learn (can take them multiple times). Tests are moderate and easy to study for. If you pay attention, you usually can do the tests pretty well.
She is an amazing professor. I loved her class. It was super interesting and fun, with not difficult work at all. It's all pretty easy if you just come to class!
This class was so much fun. It was very easy and the most work was from the labs that are due every week. All tests are open book open note and it is easy to get an A if you put in a little effort.
Sister Ross is very passionate and knowledgable! Attendance is self marked and part of your grade. Tests are open book, note, and internet (just not friend!)Labs are completed fully outside of class time and can be very time consuming. Several extra credit opportunities!
Sister Ross is awesome! I would totally take a class again from her again in the future. She loves and cares for her students so much!
I didn't really like the lectures because they recited the textbooks, but the labs were great! Sister Ross's enthusiasm is contagious. Bonus: she offers a free gem-mining field trip for extra credit. Definitely go because it was a blast! I recommend this class! Great GE, fun vibe, difficult labs but open-book/note tests.
She is a wonderful professor and the course is very fun and easy. It is a great way to fulfil part of your Physical Science GE.
Sister Ross is awesome! She knows so much and makes this class so fun. The class is so interesting, and honestly is not super hard. The labs do take time, but I thought they were so fun. You did a lot of cool things with diamonds and gems and I learned so much. If you love all things gems, you need to take this class.
Sister Ross was an amazing professor and this was one of my favorite classes this semester! All of the reading quizzes and tests are open note, lecture, book, etc. and are easy to complete if you pay attention and do the assignments. Labs were also fun and engaging
She is a great professor who is passionate about what she teaches! Her love for the subject is contagious. There is quite a bit of work for this class, you will have a lot of labs some of which are difficult and can take several hours outside of class and lab time to finish. With that said, she provides lots of extra credit.
Sister Ross is honestly a caring instructor and you can tell she is really passionate about what she teaches. The class wasn't that hard and she gives tons of extra credit opportunities. The only downside to this class are the labs which take several hours outside of your scheduled lab time. Other than that is was great.
Professor Ross is amazing! She's so nice and knows a lot. The lectures are fun to attend and the labs are even better. There's an amazing field trip where you can collect gems.
Good lectures, mandatory attendance but does excuse a certain amount which makes it not too intense. Not too much homework very manageable.
I really liked Sister Ross. You could tell she really liked what she taught. The labs for the most part weren't that hard, some are time consuming though. You also can go on a field trip so that was fun. TAs were very helpful with labs. This is a good physical science GE to take.
Such a great professor! She's so passionate about what she's teaching and is super good at getting everyone involved. There's quizzes due before every class that are fairly easy and labs that take a little more time, but they're graded very generously.
She is INCREDIBLE. Her passion for the subject bleeds into every aspect of the course. She makes you excited to learn about diamonds and gems. The labs are super interactive and you genuinely know what you're talking about at the end of the course. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun and interactive GE geology credit.
Sister Ross is a great professor! She;s so passionate about her field of study and loves to teach about all things related to diamonds and gems! One aspect I loved in her classes is how easily she tied in the scriptures/gospel to her lectures; that was so appreciated. Labs are usually done outside of lab times because they're time consuming.
She is the best!!!! So so easy and I actually learned a lot.
Sister Ross is very energetic and is always ready to share her geological wisdom with you. Heads up you will have to spend a decent amount of time outside of class for some of the labs and just make sure to stay on top of them. Overall a great class, I learned a lot and it was super fun to get to handle the gems and go on the topaz mt. field trip!
I took this as a senior in engineering, just looking for something fun. And THIS IS IT. Attendance is graded, but I enjoyed going because I felt like I learned things. Be prepared to do lab work outside the scheduled hour. However, there's hardly any other homework, and most labs can be made up later, so it's all good. Great class!
She's a really amazing professor, this class was so easy and she was very kind and always willing to help everyone. The lectures were sometimes too high of energy but I liked it because it keeps you interested and paying attention.
This class is good for your physical GE and I would recommend it if you would like an achievable A. Professor Ross is very passionate about diamonds and gems which is cool to see and encourages you to try and learn as much as you can. Labs are definitely time consuming, but talking to the TA's will help you complete them correct and quickly.
This was an awesome class and I really enjoyed it. The lectures aren't bad and she had a good teaching style so they're not super boring. The class has reading quizzes due before each class but are only 5 questions and not bad. Then every Monday we have a lab which you will have to complete out of class but is fun and not too hard.
She made sure to include any and every resource you needed for success in her class, there is no reason anyone should do bad as long as they try.
Pretty good class. All lecture slides were posted on learning suite so you can easily go back and look at information you missed in class.
Really interesting class. You will get a good grade as long as you do the work. All the quizzes and tests are open notes. The labs are fun and some are difficult, but the TAs are willing to help. She also allows extra credit.
Sister Ross is a great professor and so energetic about teaching. She makes learning fun and also provides different learning experiences. The class itself isn't too hard with all tests and quizzes being open note. There is an included lab on top of lecture, and labs can take a bit of time to complete, but overall, this is a great class.
Sister Ross is an incredible teacher! The hands-on labs were fun and engaging. There are reading quizzes before each class, but they are totally manageable with other classes' work. Also the class field trip was awesome and totally worth going. Diamonds and Gems is a must-take class, I know I would not have had these experiences otherwise.
Sister Ross is so amazing. She makes her lectures exciting and her enthusiasm is infectious. There were reading quizzes due before each lecture and the labs sometimes took a few hours past normal lab time, but it was a super cool class.
Great class, learned a lot. Lots of information but the quizzes are open-book and the exams are fairly easy if you study the right material.
Keryn is lovely! Her enthusiasm for geology really shows, and she's always ready to help if you don't understand something. As long as you keep up with the homework and assignments, it's pretty easy to get a good grade.
Great class. Learned a lot of things. The labs are super specific though, and the feedback wasn't always helpful. A lot of extra credit opportunity though
I loved taking Diamonds and Gems from Sister Ross! She loves the subject, knows her stuff, and makes class fun. If you show up and do the work, you will get a good grade. All of her tests are open note/book/internet. Sister Ross just wants you to enjoy learning the content. The labs are also great fun and are so informative. I definitely recommend!
When she teaches, you can tell she cares so much about the topic and it help you want to learn it more. Super great class and easy to get everything done. Highly recommend.
She is a fun professor and her class is really interesting. I did not think that I would enjoy looking at gemstones as much as I have. Pretty simple class if you do the work you will get a good grade. Labs are time consuming so keep that in mind.
Professor Ross's class lectures were always entertaining and the labs were really cool to learn about. Be prepared to spend about an hour or so every week outside of the designated lab time to complete the lab for the week (they use lab time to explain how to do the lab and then you do it on your own). There's 2 required textbooks for the class.
Such a random class, but it's so fun! I love how passionate Sister Ross is. The labs are fun and engaging, sometimes a little tricky but TAs or Sister Ross are always happy to help. Everything is open note, open internet, open slides. Tests are tricky, but if you take time to look through everything, the answers are there.
Very kind professor! She is always willing to help if you reach out! Should be an easy grade, and the topic is very interesting!
EASY EASY class offers some extra credit quizzes and exams are open note! It would be hard not to get an A she also offers a few extra credit opportunities
Sister Ross is a great professor. She is passionate about gemstones and makes lectures engaging. I also enjoyed the labs but they do take some time to complete outside of your lab hour. She records the lectures so if you are sick or unable to attend you can watch them later. You will learn so much about gemstones!
She really does try to make this class fun, and it is!! Labs could be a lot sometimes but she is a great professor
Really good way to skip physical science and learn something again! I would totally take this class again. I am not a rock guy, bud enjoyed everything.
Mrs. Ross is a great professor who really loves her job. I'm not super interested in geology but just listening to her talk about it with such excitement was enough to keep me interested in the lectures. There isn't a lot of busy work and she is very understanding if you need to ask for help with any assignments. She really wants you to succeed.
The class was very easy. Tests are online and you have unlimited attempts on the quizzes.
Sister Ross was great! The class could be kind of a lot of work sometimes but the content was never really that difficult. She also is very kind and understanding and provides a ton of extra credit opportunities, like you could literally bring your grade up by 5% with extra credit which is amazing!! Def recommend taking this class
Easy easy A. Lots of reading (that I didn't do & still got an A). tons of extra credit & finals are open notes & open book. labs are definitely harder than I expected but go to the TAs & like I said it is hard not to get an A. I never went to class but when I did I thought it was super boring. Professor Ross is a little weird but knows her stuff
Sister Ross makes this random class really fun and engaging. Lots of extra credit, open-note exams, and helpful TAs make it an easy A. Unstuckstudy AI was a great study tool too.
Best professor I've had at BYU. She is so kind and caring!
Easy class, exam are open to everything but AI. Labs are the only hard part but still, they are not hard. Quizzes are easy as well. Easy class to fill at GE
Sister Ross's class is super organized and very easy to stay caught up in. There are short pre classes quizzes and weren't too hard, lab each week which for the most part isn't bad at all, the TA's will help if you get stuck and the test are open book and open note. She makes this classes very doable and she is a good lecturer as well!
she is very kind and classes are interesting, I would say some of the labs are sneaky in the fact you think they will be easy and they can be difficult same with the tests. If you take lab seriously, take good notes ( open book tests!) and do all the extra credit, its an easy A
Professor Ross is amazing! She is passionate about what she teaches and makes resources easy to access. All of the tests are open book/notes, so they are very low-stress. I will say that some of the labs are deceivingly difficult but manageable. She also provides TONS of opportunities for extra credit (it's hard to get a bad grade in her class.)
Keryn is a great professor! You can tell she cares so much about the subject she teaches. Labs are once a week, but do require you to complete them outside your lab period. I struggled the most with labs, but extra credit makes up for it
Entertaining lecture, but be prepared to take time out of your day to finish the labs out of the designated lab time
Keryn Ross is a great teacher who focuses on learning more than she does about stressing you out with tests. I've taken both Geol 105 and Geol 109 from her, and though the courses are information heavy and often involve a lot of reading, testing is straightforward and lines up with what you've learned, so I personally did not find it stressful.
I'm a finance major and found this class so interesting. Labs are very hands on with some real, expensive gemstones. Tests are online but super easy if you take any sort of notes. Super easy way to get that first 1/2 of physical science GE. Professor is super caring and offers a bunch of EC. If you're on the fence take this class.
I loved Sister Ross! She's so fun and clearly loves her students and what she does. Assignments aren't bad but labs can be tricky to get perfect, extra credit helps balance this out. The field trip to topaz mountain was really cool and gave a lot of extra credit and there are several other opportunities throughout the semester.
Get ready to spend a lot of time in the lab. Some things are harder to see and you may not be sure what you are looking at, but don't give up because it's not in vain. The professor and TAs are willing to help, just talk to them and be honest. You have a lot of quizzes, but they are open book/note, just not a human.
This class was very straightforward. The expectations were laid out from the beginning. Open note midterms. Get ready to spend lots of time in the lab. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of them.
I loved this class! I learned so many cool things. Be warned, you will be spending about an hour outside of lab time finishing your labs, because there isn't enough time designated by the university for the labs to be as long as they need to be. Despite this, I fully enjoyed learning in both the lectures and the labs.
Great class
She is a great teacher. Lots of lectures but as long as you come to labs you will have a good grade. There is a fun field trip and many extra credit opportunities. Tests are open note open internet. Very interesting class even if you don't find gems exciting.
Sister Ross is an amazing professor! She is very caring and always willing to work with you. She is easy to contact outside of class and is always anxious to help in any way she can. As far as the class itself, the tests and reading quizzes are fairly easy but the labs were difficult at times. Lots of extra credit opportunities available as well.
Labs would take much longer than expected. Midterms are open note and you can enter and exit as you wish. Have quizzes before every class but they are simple and from the reading--also open note. A pretty simple class that provides extra credit.
Sister Ross is very kind and supportive. Attend lab hours as bulk of grade came from lab assignments. Midterm and final exam all open note and corrections were allowed to gain 1/2 point back for each corrected answer. You could get extra credit for attending a class field trip to Topaz Mountain, but the experience itself was super unique!
Sis Ross is an amazing professor, and the class is fun! Homework is not overwhelming, and labs are graded kindly. It was a great gened class. The subject is cool and Sister Ross makes everything engaging. Lab work done outside of lab; just don't procrastinate. Tests are open note and book which was great. Highly recommend the class and professor!
Great class! Very good option for a general, manageable workload and it was actually interesting.
Good professor and overall pretty easy class if you stay up to date on the labs.
She is a good professor. The labs and the tests make up most of your grade.
Sister. Ross is super awesome and understanding. The lectures are important but based on the textbook so it's okay if you miss a couple. She also allows you to join on Zoom if you can't make it to class, so you can still mark your attendance. Labs are super important and I think they are what helped me learn the most.
Sister Ross is a great professor. She really cares about what she teaches.
I love Keryn! She's so passionate about her job and loves to teach. She has a lot of lectures but keeps them interesting with her personality. There are labs in the Diamonds and Gems class but she makes them enjoyable and sets a clear goal for us. Super good teacher, as long as you pay attention and take some notes you'll do great
Professor Ross is so kind, bubbly, and very passionate about geology. Lectures are interesting and the labs will take time but you will learn a lot. Grading can be harsh at times but for the most part if you follow directions and put in the work you will get a good grade. She is also understanding about missing class or making up labs.
If you need to fill any GE that she teaches please I am begging you take it from her she has so much extra credit, there is quite a few assignments and labs but they're all quite easy and the exams are online and open book. She is so passionate about geology and I loved the class.
Super easy class. I never used the textbook, but I still did well. Super easy open notes and internet exams. Super fun field trip and labs.
Professor Ross was a very kind and understanding person. The class was so fun, especially the field trip! I learned so much about gems in the lab, and I can't believe I got to learn all this while still getting a GE credit! Tests are open book, which is great, but still make sure to study, as they are still quite difficult. Lots of reading.
Very accommodating for students. We are given many resources to succeed and are allowed to use them on the tests. There's also a lot of opportunities for extra credit that are super fun. If you want an amazing time and a pretty easy A for your physical science credit, take this class.
I absolutely loved Keryn's teaching, she's amazing (she reminds me of Doc Ock from Into the Spiderverse in the best way possible). The class was fascinating and pretty light on readings and homework. There's only a few big assignments, and they're all open book/open note. Super easy and so enjoyable, I wish I could take it again
The best geology teacher, she makes attending lectures fun, and if you read outside of class about the material you will be well informed and better able to do labs, tests, etc.
I would highly recommend taking this class from her. I have gained a lot more appreciation for gems even though I am a medical major. The lectures are interesting and there isn't too much homework. You will have to take time outside of class to complete the labs. Probably an extra 1.5-2 hours per lab, but they are honestly pretty fun!
Professor Ross has a very great class the lectures feel a little heavy at times because of the amount of information, but she makes them fun and engaging. Labs are mandatory, and you do have to come in on your own time to finish but most did not take a lot of time to complete
Sister Ross is amazing and super helpful if you have any follow up questions about the material or an answer on the tests or quizzes. You have to come in on your own time to do labs but, most of them only take about an hour. Find a good TA to help you during lab hours!
She is really such a great teacher who really cares and it is a pretty easy class!
Professor Ross was a queen and helped us feel a passion for gems!
Sister Ross is so awesome! She loves what she teaches, and her excitement makes the class enjoyable. It isn't too difficult, but some of the labs are ridiculously hard, and they can take a lot of time depending on the week. Overall, this course is good! It just doesn't cover the entire physical science credit, so be aware of that.
Professor Ross is amazing! If you are willing to do the work, it is easy to pass the class. The exams are online and open book and open note. There is a lab once a week where participation is mandatory. For a majority of the labs, you will have to go in outside of lab time to complete the assignment. There was a lot of effort required with the labs
This class is fairly easy for a general. She's silly and crazy but passionate about what she teaches. Tests were online and you can watch the lectures from zoom.
She was an amazing teacher. She is super passionate about her subject but understands that most of us take the class as a general. Tests are open book!
She was great professor, who you could tell was super passionate about what she taught! The class was super easy, and all the tests were online and open note. The labs were sometimes a little tricking but manageable.
Sister Ross was such an amazing professor! Her lectures were fun and engaging and she taught information in a way that was really easy to understand and clear. Homework was very manageable, and tests were very straightforward and easy. This class is a really great way to get credit for generals and learn something on the way. I highly recommend it!
She is very nice and enthusiastic. I went to about half the lectures and did fine. You get points for attending, but it isn't a huge amount of the grade. You definitely have to go the the labs, and a few of them are pretty long. Small reading quizzes each week and a few simple assignments. Overall, an enjoyable professor.
I learned a lot from this class. I think the hardest part was the labs as the TA's (at least mine) didn't teach the material clearly and left the class confused on what was going on. It made it hard to know what we were doing on the labs which we were graded quite critically , even when we did our best with what we were given.
Super easy class if you just show up and do the work. Two classes plus a lab per week but not a huge workload. Best part is that she lets you have open internet and open book during exams. Literally baller.
Sister Ross is amazing! The labs were sometimes difficult to understand what I was supposed to be doing or how to do it. Practice is essential for the labs.
Ross is so incredible and obviously very passionate. Her lectures and labs are engaging and help you learn a lot. there's also so many extra credit opportunities that are really fun to do. she also loves to answer questions and is very easily accessible for anything and her TAs are wonderful.
Sister Ross is awesome! I honestly hate science and had no interest in the course material, but Sister Ross made this class one of my favorites this semester. She's a super engaging lecturer, I had her 9am class after an early morning custodial shift and I never fell asleep. She's super passionate about what she teaches and wants you to succeed.
This professor was amazing! Sister Ross is so understanding and loves to see her students thrive.
She's great and the class is super fun!
Professor Ross is one of the most fun professors I've had at BYU. She's insanely passionate about geology and her energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Would highly recommend!!
All of the tests are open-book and open-note. She is a professor who genuinely enjoys the subject she teaches. She teaches the hands-on aspects of examining gems and expects students to also be able to master them.
Did a great job teaching lectures, you can tell she has a passion for it and cares about her students. Would definitely take again. I'm not a geology major but I found it really cool and interesting.
Keryn Ross was amazing as a professor, she made the class fun yet challenging. The workload was very manageable and the labs were super helpful for the class.
This professor is super fun and you can tell she's very passionate about what she teaches. Her class also had a lot of cool labs and a super awesome field trip. I'd highly recommend this class especially since it fulfills a GE credit!
Solid physical credit class. Decent amount of homework, but definitely not overwhelming. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Attendance required, but she gives you 3 or 4 free days, and you mark attendance yourself on Learning Suite. Reading Quiz every class, but they're easy to find the answers and you can take them as many times as you want.
I was always engaged and impressed during her lectures. She has an amazing way of explaining new material and concepts. When I reached out to her about needing more help, she created a customized plan to help me succeed. She is enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches, and caring and understanding toward her students.
I thought this was going to be a boring class just to fulfill a GE credit when I signed up. Since the first day, I was proven wrong! Professor Ross is awesome. She loves her students, and loves teaching. Homework took on average about an hour a week or less. This class wasn't hard, but it did take effort to do well. Super engaging class!
Sister Ross is an amazing professor! I took this course to fulfill a GE requirement and I'm so glad I did. Attending lectures is part of the grade but Keryn is SO lenient if you miss class for mental/physical health or other important reasons. Some of the labs were somewhat time-consuming so expect to put in a couple hours aside each week for them.
She is a great teacher who cares about her students! I am definitely glad I picked this class!
Sister Ross is the best ever! She really cares about her students and geology! Everything including exams are open note, open book, open google! Labs are interesting and sometimes hard but are not graded harshly at all. Definitely recommend!
Sister Ross is fantastic. I took this class not to take physical science, but it was SO worth it. It was literally one of the easiest science classes I've ever taken, and she genuinely cares about you and wants you to learn. Every class is recorded, so you don't have to go, but she's such a sweet lady, and I still showed up. Take this class!
Sister Ross is amazing! She's super laid-back. She also gets that a lot of people take Diamonds and Gems as an easy GE rather than a serious class. Attendance is a little over 3% of the grade. Labs + readings can be somewhat time consuming, but not compared to most science classes, and the material isn't difficult. Was a fun, easy science class.
This class was a great physical science GE and was not too difficult. Prof. Ross is very understanding and kind, especially around attendance. She loves the material, which helps the lectures to be interesting. The exams were not too difficult either - I just studied the reading quizzes. Sister Ross is a great professor.
This class was really fun. I spent about an hour each week outside of class in the lab, but most of them were not too difficult. As someone who does not like physical science, I still found this class and the labs really interesting. Everything is open note and open internet, and you record your own attendance.
She was awesome! All exams and quizzes are open book/notes. Make sure to go to the labs though cause you don't want to get behind on those. Its not too difficult if you go to class, do the quizzes, and assignments. If looking for an easy GE for physical science, take this class. You do have to use the textbooks though, so you'll have to buy them.
Amazing and fun class, tests are super easy
She is very passionate about geology which made it fun to learn about these things. The quizzes and tests are not too hard. She is really nice and always willing to answer questions. We were often behind in lectures, but quizzes are open book with multiple attempts. I would recommend this class, especially as a fun general class!
I loved this class. She is very passionate about what she teaches. It was super easy and there is very little homework. I would definitely recommend taking this class if you need the physical science GE.
She has daily quizzes for credit so just remember to do those. She is often behind on lectures which can make the schedule feel weird or rushed at times. Ask for help on the homework assignments, resources can be difficult to locate.
Sister Ross is great! I don't care about Geology, but her passion for the subject is infectious. Daily quizzes, which are open book and unlimited attempts, but the daily readings are often long and boring. Her lectures are a lot clearer and typically have more to do with what's on the tests. I enjoyed being in class, not so much doing classwork.
Professor Ross is awesome. She is very passionate about what she teaches which makes her lectures interesting. She is extremely understanding and wants her students to succeed. If you put in effort you will be able to do well in her class. Some of the assignments can be a bit difficult but don't be afraid to ask for help!
Pretty straightforward class, and not too difficult, making it a great choice for physical sciences GE. She allows three personal days to miss lectures without losing any credit, no explanation needed, and those are separate from sick days. There are quizzes every day, but you can take them as many times as you need and they're open book.
Cares about both her subject and her students. Her passion can help you get excited, even at 9am, and she's always willing to help out students both in and outside of class. Don't be afraid to ask questions! She'll never treat you like you're stupid. Also gives "excused" absences for health, even mental health days. There are easy, daily quizzes
SO much extra credit! Sister Ross is so kind! I have a disability and didn't know how I could do one of the labs. She met with me 1-on-1 and we figured out how I could complete the lab. I learned so much about appraising gems, and we got to use real gems in lab! The tests were open book, but there's quite a lot of reading. Overall, a cool class!
Keryn is an amazing professor! Her lectures are entertaining and she is very understanding that unplanned things happen. Lab attendance is required so when you sign up for that date be aware of that. I had to make my way to lab from WCCB but my TA and Keryn were very understanding. 100% recommend to take this class.
Took this as a GE and it was chill and not too difficult, but wouldn't recommend if you're just trying to get a GE out of the way.
She's super passionate about geology and her lectures are very enjoyable. The work load is reasonable.
Good Class! labs were tough though, TAs grade nicely though
Labs were pretty time consuming and could be difficult, but the TA's grade generously! And Sister Ross is so fun and understanding! I had to meet with her 1-1 to get help for a lab one time and she was so helpful and kind. We had an optional/extra credit class field trip to topaz mountain which was an absolute blast. Very hands on class. Loved it!
She's awesome!! Definitely take this instead of physical science. Super fair and doable, but you learn a lot
Sister Ross was amazing! She is very passionate about what she is teaching, and always made the lectures interesting. She also really cares about her students. I loved taking this class and really learned a lot.
I loved her as a Professor, her energy is infectious! There was a fair amount of reading and work outside of class, especially since the lab time is meant mostly to go over the instructions for the labs, so the labs had to be completed on your own time, but it was so much fun it was worth it!
Sister Ross is wonderful! She is enthusiastic about her subject but also incredibly patient with her students. She had such a positive learning environment and I learned so much. I loved how she even included scripture references to gems! FANTASTIC extra credit opportunities! Open book tests! I absolutely recommend taking this class with her!
There is a lot of busy work for the labs. You have to go in on your own time to finish them, and they normally take an hour, sometimes two to finish. Other than that it was a fun class and it has a lot of extra credit opportunities!
She is a great teacher. Very knowledgable. There is quite a lot of work as well as a lab but as long as you do the work, you will get an A in the class. Tests and quizzes are open book and sometimes that makes the questions harder. You can go on a fun field trip to topaz mountain for extra credit to find your own gems. A good GE!
Keryn is so enthusiastic about her subject and is a genuinely kind person! Everything is open note, open book, and there are unlimited retakes on quizzes. My only critique is that the labs were graded harshly; I would spend hours on them and rarely got above a B. But there's plenty of extra credit opportunities to make up for it!
Keryn is a great professor, knows a lot about what she teaches, and is very enthusiastic about it as well. She makes the expectations for the class clear, it is important to attend the lectures so you understand the concepts. Tests are very conceptual and application based but are open note and open internet (though the internet doesn't help much).
This class is pretty easy, and the labs are so much fun! I have enjoyed this class so much; the lab hours are a bit annoying though. I normally had classes when the lab was open, so most times I went was after 6pm. I would highly recommend this class and take it again.
Sister Ross is the best and is very passionate and enthusiastic about what she teaches. The lectures are important, and the tests are open-book, which is nice. The only thing is that the labs can be time-consuming and sometimes tedious, but they are also really fun, and you learn a lot from them. The extra credit can help a lot.
She is incredibly kind and understanding! All exams are open book, open slides, open lectures. Not open AI (which is not even helpful anyway) and not open to other people (also not helpful). This professor also offers a ton of extra credit options and one can easily get an A in this class.
I enjoyed taking this class; however, it was a heavier load than I was expecting. There is dedicated lab time each week, but we do not complete the lab during that time. Therefore, you have to come in on your own time to finish it. The labs were also graded more harsh than I feel like they should have been. Overall, it was a pretty good class.
The professor is very enthusiastic about what she teaches! Honestly, a bit harder and heavier load than I was expecting, but overall a fun class. There isn't enough time in labs to complete assignments, so time outside of class is required to finish them.
Seriously never seen someone that passionate about rocks! She cares a lot about her students and if you do the work, you should be able to get an A. The tests are open note and open internet and there is so much extra credit! The labs do require about an hour a week of extra lab time on your own time
She is so amazing. She is so caring and is passionate about her teaching. The labs can be slightly difficult and are done mostly on your own time out of class. I took it with a bunch of my friends and I loved this class. Highly recommend taking this class.
Tests are open note and internet so they aren't vary hard. She offers a good amount of extra credit opportunities. Labs are the hardest part, but just take time. Other readings and quizzes are easy because they can be taken multiple times.
This class was difficult for a GE credit. I'm in a science major and spent more time outside of class for GEOL 105 than I did for my major classes. The labs take a long time to do and most people get around 16/20 most of the time. Also, even though the tests are open note, they are hard! Thankfully there is extra credit!!
Sister Ross is so awesome and so accommodating! The class is actually kind of tough— the labs and readings are time consuming and the really should be more than 3 credits. But it was fun.
Keryn is a great teacher! You can tell she's super invested in our learning. Definitely recommend.
I love Professor Ross! She is very passionate about her teachings and cares a lot for her students. Attendance is not mandatory and you can watch it on Zoom. Midterm and final is on LearningSuite and they are pretty easy since it's open book and open notes
Great teacher! Helps you understand all of the work necessary, and the homework is very light. As long as you read, and go to class, you will pass easily!
Keryn Ross is genuinely one of the kindest professors I've had the opportunity to learn from. All her tests are open book and open note so it's super easy! Attendance matters but she gives you plenty of sick days and mental health days so its really not hard at all. The professor is so passionate about her work and the success of her students.
Such an amazing professor! She gives many opportunities for extra credit and the labs were very fun. She's also very understanding when it comes to mental health struggles and will work with you to figure things out. Her lectures are fun and it's clear she has a passion for the subject. Make sure to go to your labs, though!
She was great. We had work, but not super difficult. The labs took up the most time because you had to do them outside of class. Exams are open-book and open-note. Super fun class and would recommend to anyone!
Sister Ross is an amazing professor! You can tell that she really really loves geology and wants to share her love and wonder. The lectures are fascinating and fun. There are reading quizzes that don't take much time, extra credit opportunities, and a merciful attendance policy. The labs are time consuming but really cool. 10/10 would recommend!
Sister Ross was great! I was never really interested in geology but she made this class so engaging. The labs were super fun and she offers quite a bit of extra credit. Everything is open book/open note, but you still need to know your stuff to get 100% percent on assignments.
This class is fun any easy, the only hard part was the lab. The labs were sometimes difficult but other than that the class was easy. The quizzes and test are all online and open note, book, and internet.
Sister Ross is very enthusiastic and passionate about the topics. She does a good job teaching us the material in a fun way. Lectures are just slideshows and are usually recorded on zoom.
She is amazing. Would definitely take this class from her.
Professor ross was a great teacher, the labs were pretty mediocre but attendance was mandatory, she's pretty lenient and you get 3 free absences but also will work around extra emergencies. as long as you go to labs and do the work you'll be totally fine.
Sister Ross gives more opportunities for extra credit than I've ever seen before. If you want to get an A (or higher than 100%) it is possible. The tests are completely open note. I probably spend about 3-5 hours outside of class doing homework every week depending on how difficult the lab was for that week.
There is one lab due once a week which is what kept me busy throughout this class and took 1 2 hours out of class to finishThe TAs are super friendly, and are helpful in explaining any questions in the textbook.
I would take this class from her again. The course is lecture heavy and there are reading quizzes before class. However, those reading quizzes really aren't that bad. She does move fast through the lecture, but the slides are available so you can have them open on your own to take notes which is nice. She totally set you up for success on her test!
I took this class for my physical science GE and it was honestly the best decision I could have made! Sister Ross is so engaging in her lectures and really makes the class interesting and fun. She is very thoughtful of her students when it comes to how she grades work and gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I highly recommend this class!
I took this class for my physical science credit and I would recommend it to anyone! Sister Ross is a great professor and the homework amount is very do able. Some labs take longer than others, but the TA's are very helpful in helping you to understand how to complete them. The lecture was interesting, she is very passionate about what she teaches.
You will have to spend time outside of class in the lab but it's not too bad. She expects you to be in class but is easy to work with if you can't be there. Lectures are always recorded on Zoom and the slides are posted so if you can't be there you can stay caught up. She's funny and loves geology and you can tell that she loves teaching it.
I took Gems and Diamonds and loved it! I came in knowing nothing about geology, but it wasn't hard to follow the curriculum. It was an interesting class and Prof Ross is very passionate!
I love this class! And I love Sister Ross so much! She has a great passion for geology and almost convinced me to switch over. Before taking Diamonds and Gems, I thought geology was the most boring science of them all. Now I love it! It's so applicable and I loved the opportunities to learn in labs and how interesting the textbooks were. Take it!
She has a lot of energy. She likes to follow rules.
I loved this class, the labs were fun and I feel like i learned a lot.
She was very kind and considerate. She really cared about the material and gave many opportunities to gain points outside of class. There is an extra credit activity that is worth like 4%. She also records and broadcasts all of her lectures so if you have to miss no biggie.
I LOVE Sister Ross! Super great class, lots of fun and I learned a ton. Attendance is required, but she does record and broadcast her lectures so you can get credit if you are sick in any way. Not stressful, just fun. Sister Ross makes me want to go out and buy real fancy jewelry haha. I have a much greater appreciation for it.
Relatively easy class, but labs can be a time commitment. She recognizes this class shouldn't destroy your GPA and it isn't very hard to get an A. Weekly reading quizzes are super easy with unlimited retakes. Occasional short papers. tests are a little more difficult but they're completely open book and you can open and close it while you work.
pretty easy class, she's passionate about what she teaches and it's fun to do some of the labs, but the labs can also be tedious
This was one of the best GE class I have taken! I loved the lectures and I loved the labs. Sister Ross is absolutely incredible as well. If you show up and do the work, you will be just fine.
Keryn is incredible. I didn't do great just because I am HORRIBLE at science, but she was an amazing teacher and the labs were really fun and I learned a lot. But, I did spend a lot more time outside of class coming in to work on the labs than I hoped I would, but that's probably just because I'm not very science oriented.
Sister Ross is one of the sweetest professors at BYU. She does her best to learn your name and invites you to really get into the material. She does field trips if that's any incentive. Her labs are fun and you get to take home gems! You'll learn a little about chem and religion, so it's pretty well-rounded. Had so much fun! :)
This class was awesome! Clear lectures and labs with lots of knowledge to remember but also open note/book tests and quizzes. Prof Ross is very understanding and will work with you. Would recommend this class.
Keryn Ross is very kind and understanding. Her lectures are accessible online in case you need a mental health day or can't make it. Her tests are open notes/slides/internet. Her class slides are posted. Very fun to learn about gems and a great way to get physical science credit.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Best class I've taken at BYU. Super easy A if you just remember to stay on top of assignments. There is a lot of "busy work", but it's not at all unbearable. Two reading quizzes a week that are both open note and three exams total, all open-note as well. Would recommend to anyone.
Labs every week, lots of extra credit opportunities. Quizzes every week but they're online, so are the exams and they're open note. Sets you up for success, you would have to try to get a bad grade in this class. Don't get the textbooks, you won't use them. Records each lecture, you HAVE to go to lab outside of class to do assignments.
I love Sister Ross, but if you're looking for an easy A, this is not the one for you. She assigns a lot of reading that you can't skip. The labs are fun but you have to do one a week for 1 hr, and she expects you to spend an additional 1-2 hrs outside of class completeing it. Overall if its not your major I don't reccomend.
Dr Ross is fantastic at getting you to love geology. If you don't love geology, you will after this class (she has many converts to the major/minor). If you love geology, she is knowledgeable, passionate, and a fair and organized teacher. She brought the Gospel into geology in cool ways and emphasized her specialty, igneous rocks in cool ways too
Ross is really good in her lectures but she's fast paced so be ready to take notes quickly and a lot of them. She gives hints about exams so make sure to write down anything she says may be on the exam because you do have open notes on your midterms. Stay on top of the quizzes and attend the classes and you should be fine.
I loved the Diamonds and Gems class. Sister Ross was so sweet and excited about the gems which made everything really interesting to learn. She's super understanding and didn't make things harder than they needed to be.
Very easy class for GE credit.
Sister Ross is one of the most caring professors ever! She genuinely wants everyone in her class to succeed and gives multiple opportunities to increase your grade, especially if certain circumstances force you to miss labs or lectures. She records all of her lectures online and is very accommodating to everyones situations! Definitely recommend!!
Professor Ross is a very kind, caring teacher that doesn't make her class too difficult. There are lots of extra credit opportunities, and the tests are open note online. This is a great class to take to knock out a GE and learn more about geology, gems, and diamonds.
Keryn is great! She knows what she's talking about, she is reasonable and her grading system is the best. You actually learn about gems, her labs are helpful and her TAs are amazing.
I honestly loved this teacher and the class. I would take another class from her again. The only thing that was mildly difficult in this class was the labs. Some TA's grade harder than others and going in to open TA lab hours, they aren't supposed to help you a ton. You can ask one question and that's it.
I love Sister Ross. She is an absolute hoot and is very passionate about what she teaches. If you're looking for an easy GE that will also be interesting to learn, this is the class! There are super high point extra credit opportunities and all the tests are open note. She loves her students and the gospel. Take this class!
I love how enthusiastic Sister Ross is about diamonds and gems. I took this class for a general and was not very excited to learn about rocks, but she is so excited about the subject, it's contagious.
She is super enthusiastic about what she's teaching. The labs are fun and not too difficult. There are reading quizzes due before each class. The quizzes aren't difficult or long but you will need to do the reading. Half the semester has heavy reading. Open note, open book for everything! Relaxed fun class, but still productive in learning.
Sister Ross is awesome! You can tell that she loves her job and loves working with her students. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Labs are fun. Easy A.
Keryn is so kind and it's so obvious that she LOVES what she does! Her passion makes it easy to stay engaged! My only issue with the class is how large it was, it was hard to get questions answered outside of lab which is one day a week.
For me, this was a fun and informative GE. Professor (Sister) Ross is passionate about what she teaches and provides lots of opportunities for hands-on experiences in the lab.
Sister Ross was, by far, one of my favorite professors. She's hilarious, lots of fun, kind, and gave me gummy worms on the field trip. You can take the reading quizzes unlimited times and exams are open notes/book. 50 stars! I saved hundreds of dollars on my engagement ring by applying what I learned from her class! TAKE HER CLASS!! You'll love it!
Great Professor. Awesome GE (probably the best GE to take). Interesting material. If you want to challenge yourself you can, if you want to coast by you also can.
Sister Ross is super kind. She keeps the class very simple, good content to learn and makes learning about diamonds and basic gems very interesting. Her class is relaxed and entertaining.
Professor Ross was such a positive teacher that honestly made it so much easier to come to class even when I didn't really want to. Most of the time participating in this class was spent in the lab, but the labs are interesting a fun.... and easy.
This class is very good. I would say that as long as you do the work you will get an amazing grade in this class. The work is very clear, straightforward, and easy. She provides a lot of extra credit and even allows you two drop two labs. The only thing that is more difficult is that you will need to work on labs outside of the lab hour.
This class was easy and fun. Attendance is mandatory, marked online on your own honor. Lectures are recorded and on Zoom. Labs are done mostly outside of class, but graded lightly. I didn't find the labs hard. Tests are open note and open internet, and you can complete them in more than one sitting. Plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Sister Ross was great! Her class is really easy. All the reading quizzes allow for multiple attempts and the exams are open-note/internet. The labs can be difficult and time-consuming, but she offers extra credit opportunities that make up for any lab difficulty. She is very passionate about the subject.
Sister Ross is amazing! The reading quizzes allow multiple attempts and the everything (even exams) are open note/internet. The labs are time consuming and can be difficult but you can drop one. There are a ton of extra credit opportunities that really can help your grade. Sister Ross is so kind and really wants everyone to succeed.
Professor Ross is amazing! Her lectures are so engaging and interesting. I never get bored in her class. Her labs are also super fun, and you learn so much! She is really good at explaining the material, and makes sure you questions are answered clearly.
I loved taking her class! You can tell she's super passionate about her topics and I learned a ton from her! The coursework isn't difficult and totally doable, you just need to try! I had a lot of fun and enjoyed listening to her every class!
It's a pretty easy class. The labs can be a little annoying but its not bad
I really enjoyed this class. Interesting and an easy A.
She is so awesome! Her readings aren't too long and she gives quizes that are open note and you can retake it as many times as you want. So it is really easy to get 100 on every quiz. Exams are open note and are not too bad, they are online not proctered. Labs take a lot of time but are easy to get good grades.
All the tests are open book, note, and internet so if you really just need to fulfill a GE, this is a great option. You have to go to the lectures, but you don't really need to take notes unless you want to take the test faster. The labs are probably the coolest part of the class but they do take more time outside of lectures. 10/10 class
Professor Ross is clearly passionate about gemology which shows through her lectures. The labs felt relevant to the reading which helps solidify learning. I felt like she was aware that this course is a GE so while there is a decent amount of homework, the exams are open note, the labs are straightforward, and there is a lot of extra credit.
Sister ross is very passionate about what she teaches and is very accommodating with technical and physical issues. As long as you do the readings and the labs, as well as pay attention in class, assignments are very easy. All quizzes and tests are open note, and TAs are very helpful with labs and questions. Extra credit opportunities are ample.
Attendance is required, but she is so easy to work with. If you are sick you can watch online and things like that. The labs were fun to me, but DEFINITELY go to TA hours for the labs. They are willing to help. The tests are all open note. Low stress and interesting class. Keryn is funny and nice.
She has so many good reviews for a reason. She loves teaching, loves working with students, and loves geology. She is always willing to work with students and help them in the course. Great professor.
Sister Ross is a great professor! She really cares about geology and makes great jokes during class, even in the early morning. It is mostly lectures and there are textbook quizzes every week, but you get unlimited tries. She lets you have 3 "free" days to miss class and also 3 sick days. I would definitely recommend her class!
Keryn is so fun! Definitely reccomend taking this class for your generals
She was a great teacher. I really enjoyed class. You do have to attend the lectures, but she makes them interesting. Some of the assignments were hard and took a lot of time, but there are only five of those. You do have a quiz after every lecture, but if you pay attention, you should be fine. She is super nice and accommodating. Would take again.
Sister Ross is amazing! She goes super in depth about everything you'd need to know, and all the tests and quizes are open note. She has a great attendance policy, and really cares about what she is teaching! Definitelty attend lectures, and make sure you give yourself time to complete your labs.
If you go to class and pay attention, you will succeed. The labs are where the class gets harder, but working with your Ta will help.
This class is a great way to pass off half of a GE credit. The labs can be time consuming but I liked the fact that the tests were open book. She gave lots of opportunities to succeed, including a field trip to Topaz. I'd recommend the class whether you're interested in learning about diamonds and gems or you need an easy GE class.
Keryn is fantastic! You can tell she cares about her students and wants them to succeed and love the subject. Lectures are fascinating, and they cover most everything that you would find in the readings. She lets you retake the reading quizzes. Labs and tests are hard to get right, but she is kind with grading and provides some extra credit.
Professor Ross has really interesting lectures. All we did for home work was daily quizzes that have unlimited attempts and 5 very easy assignments. Tests are not very hard, if you go to class and take basic notes you will get 100 percent. The only thing is she does get distracted very easily and we were behind a lecture most of the semester.
The work to learning ratios is perfect for an entry level course. There are plenty of opportunities to make up homework and plenty of attempts on quizzes to get the grades you want. Sister Ross is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about diamonds and gems which makes lectures fun and informative. Would highly recommend this class!
She was a very kind and understanding professor. Her lectures were clearly connected to the material on the tests/ labs, making it easy to succeed. She was also very accessible outside of class, making it a flexible class.
This class was very easy and I would recommend it for a physical science credit. It did feel more inapplicable than most of my other classes because I will never need to identify gems. But good for a chill class.
This professor was caring and made lectures pretty interesting! It was an easy class to fulfill part of the physical science GE, which is helpful. The hardest part about this class was the labs, but the TAs are there to help during office hours.
Prof Ross is awesome, I absolutely recommend taking this class. She's funny, energetic, and very passionate about the subject. The labs are lots of fun, and who doesn't want to mess around with diamonds and gemstones all the time?
This class is amazing. Sister Ross is a great teacher and makes the class so fun and engaging. Labs are so fun and give you a great opportunity to be hands on.
The material is pretty advanced but interesting, and everything is open-note. Reading quizzes, tests, and labs, essays, etc, all open-note/open-internet. There are 2 hours a week of lecture, 1 hour a week of lab, and then you have to go back in the lab for about an hour once a week to complete the labs. Attendance is graded but 3 days are dropped!
Sister Ross is one of the best professors at BYU. Her class is fun and engaging even if you don't care about geology. She offers a lot of extra credit options too. There are two textbooks you're "supposed" to get, but I never used either of mine and did just fine in her class. Tests are open note and internet. Great option to fill your GE!
Sister Ross is such a good, kind person, and this reflects will in this class. She wanted us to learn a lot, and we did thanks to her teaching! I would absolutely reccomend this class!!!
Sister Ross helped us all to understand gems better and was a great teacher. There were assignments every week, but if you pay attention in lecture, they are easy.
I really liked Dr. Ross. This is my second class from her, and her courses are always engaging and informative. She does require attendance, but she has a generous policy. The homework load is really doable, and the exams are online
I loved taking this class! The lectures were directly correlated to the readings, quizzes, and tests. With exams and quizzes being open book, a large portion of the learning process was just applying what I read. There were labs that took a few hours outside of class to complete every couple of weeks, but there was always TA help available.
Awesome class. Keryn is the nicest most passionate teacher I've had at BYU so far. Lectures were clear and assignments were manageable. All the slides are posted online too, which makes the tests much more relaxed. Tests and finals are all online. You have to try to get a bad grade.
