I've had Professor Adkins for a few classes and he goes above and beyond to help his students succeed. Get ready to work for it but you'll come out better!
You learn a lot but beware of 3 tough group projects at the end of the term. Beginning of the term is a lot of review if you have had calculus.
The toughest class I have taken from Professor Adkins, along with being the most mathematical, but cool! Interesting stuff - start with orbital mechanics and end with cosmology...
Professor Adkins clearly loves this topic and class and it rubs off. Set me up well for subsequent class!
Professor with his industry background is able to make this class very relevant. Would recommend taking this class with him.
Orbital mechanics part of this course is pretty rough; the rest much more doable... If you can make it through orbital mechanics, you're set the rest of the term! He makes himself readily available - take advantage of it!
Only one real test - take home but hard; the rest is pretty much projects graded by reports and presentations. Allot enough time to bring together the report and presentation. He will call you out if you are not prepared in your presentation or if there are holes in your reports. However, the best professor I have ever had!
Lecture: sense of humor, energetic, encourages participation, ability 2 explain complicated concepts in easy way Tests: what u would expect Office hours: utilize (for class & career advice, I went 2 after I heard other students refer 2 him as "tour guide of life") High expectations, doesn't like lazy students Hotness... Looks like a student ;)
Adkins is a genius not just because he knows his stuff but he can teach it - and can back it by real world experience! Great first engineering experience!!!
Alright, a few things: he is a pretty fun guy and brings the real world into every lesson; I think the reason he is so good is because he taught physics in a past life but has an engineering background so everything is very applied. He does love the subject and it rubs off
Motivates you to want to be better at the end than when you came in. Tough but I like him!
I learned a ton in this class, didn't really realize it until the end during the term project. Somewhat self-paced just be sure to do all of the work and keep up! Attention to detail - but then again, this is programming... Adkins is able to bring into the class his real world research.
Gives you more than the typical introduction on aircraft systems - you know the why! Take this professor if you want to know your aircraft inside and out... Higher expectations but you hardly notice because of the way he breaks it down. Everything comes from notes.
He obviously loves what he does and he majorly turned me onto engineering...
First time I have found math to be interesting. Uses his real-world experience to make the material applicable. My friends have nick-named him the, "tour-guide of life".
Toughest class to date. Know a lot of people who left engineering after this but for those who stuck around - awesome design projects! I feel like we actually did a legit multi-stage rocket. Puts a lot of emphasis on presentations and expect all nighters at the end if you don' plan well. Tough but learned a lot, gave me a lot of self-confidence
Makes this marginally relevant course for my major much more applicable compared to how some other professors teach it. The one thing that you have to understand about Prof. Adkins is he emphasizes the "why" behind everything - so, the course actually proved beneficial to me as an engineering major...
I took this class actually before I took physics which made it a lot harder! However, prepared me well for classical mechanics when I took it the following semester.
This guy loves this class. He will either be the guy that makes you reconsider your career plans or the teacher that you will remember for your entire life as being the best you had.
This class requires a lot of self discipline... My low grade was my own fault.
I am rating 1 yr after taking his class. At the time I knew he was good & that I learned. However, it wasn't until I took more classes that I learned just how special he is. I'm now taking a follow-on course & I see how much better prepared I am then the rest. Not all profs are like him; he is special! But u will work & have fun. My C was my doing
Tough class but has made me a better all around student... He is good at explaining complicated material. Very accessible outside of class and cares!
Best thing from this course is it made me better at presentations, you'll get lots of valuable feedback
Adkins is good at making all discussions real world. Think about UAS much differently now.
I took this class because I had Professor Adkins before and he is good. Class turned out to be better than i expected - hands-on labs are the best part and when there were lectures, he always makes them entertaining. Ties a lot in to his research... Would recommend but tests are significantly harder than some of his other classes!
Affectionately named the "Tour Guide of Life". You learn a lot more than just math and physics in his class but general problem solving strategies. Learned a lot about how to tackle hard material/projects. I think his industry experience makes this so.
I took the sequence of UAS courses (AS220/AS315). He is into answering the WHY question behind everything and this does help in the long run and makes class more interesting. Felt like learned a lot, he has a good sense of humor, and I would definitely take again.
Be prepared to pick a solid final project. Do this in advance and talk to him about this. He puts this on you and it makes or breaks your grade. Works well with independently motivated students as he expects this.
The certification material is pretty dry but Dr. Adkins brings in research and real world application to make the course a lot more interesting than it otherwise would be. Course starts out with theory and ends with application in a design project. Awesome professor
Covers a lot of different topics and my guess is class difficulty comes down to your previous math/physics exposure. Last 2/3 of class is all project-based - so, pick your group carefully - this is what makes or breaks you. I had a terrible first group but a solid second group saved me. He's big on presentation skills.
I'll try to get Dr. Adkins again for another class
His flipped classroom makes class time interesting, and I learned a lot - but, a lot of outside reading. Be sure to ask questions from reading assignments..
This class has a terrible reputation with other professors. He sets up his class to help you succeed! I rocked my next classes where I had to use MATLAB.
Dr. Adkins teaches unlike anybody else I have had, he brings the material to life. I'll be disappointed to not have him anymore.
A good mix between the physics and application. Brings it to life and makes it interesting. He does make you work for it but everything comes from his lectures or group problems. Be sure to sit for his reviews before an exam. Best part is i learned a lot besides weather, like good strategies and presentation skills.
Teaches you how to think more than anything. He teaches by having you answer, 'why'
An incredible professor and mentor. Lectures but engages the student, has a very special way of teaching.
Teaches through application. Takes a physics and math broad based approach in order to make the content applicable both now and in the future.
I've had two other programming classes and the way Dr. Adkins structured the course made it so that I learned the most from this one. Stays connected to his students.
Dr. Adkins is engaging and expects you to be engaged. He truly cares about his students. He is my hardest professor but the one i like the most.
While his class is a little harder than other profs I have heard about, you end up learning way more and have more fun doing so. I'll miss learning in his class.
Incredible prof!
I can honestly say hes the best professor ive ever had. His class was definitely the toughest ive ever taken, but his lectures are very engaging and as long as you understand the why to everything, youll succeed with him. He taught me the fundamentals of the class, obviously, but also that if you want something, to put in the work and get it.
Best professor I've ever had
Pretty great, not big into memorization but want a deeper understanding, certainly passionate, and very approachable Big into classroom participation
Wished I would have had for 309
I like the way Dr. Adkins teaches with a lot of emphasis on actually understanding. Tests are exactly what he says they will be. Wish Id had for 309.
Very approachable and will spend a lot of time with you helping you learn any material you don't understand. Encourages questions. Wished I would have visited Professor Adkins more during the first part of the class.
Focuses a lot on the physics while mixing in a lot of real world applications but HW does not have a lot of math In it. Encourages questions and discussions and easy to talk to you outside of class. Glad I took him versus others
New to the department, I think he may have come from engineering. Best addition to the department.
Favorite professor Ive had at Riddle, brings math and science together and ties it all together with application. Made class enjoyable
Dr. Adkins takes a rather mundane AS310 Performance class and makes it both enjoyable and beneficial. He gives amazing lectures that are easy to follow and encourage participation, and his experience in the industry is made clear by his wealth of knowledge on the subject.
Like how Dr. Adkins conducts class like a conversation. Learned a lot including 309 material that I didn't understand. Wish he was teaching more upper-level courses.
I believe that Dr. Adkins might be a little bit tougher and have higher expectations than some of the other professors teaching 310. However, compared to other I have talk to, he makes the material much easier to understand, relates it more and cares more. He definitely wants his students to succeed and I would recommend him. Wished Id had for 309
Goes into a lot more detail than other professors and I learned a ton, even stuff that I had not grasped from other classes. Recommended him to many of my friends. I appreciated him as a professor.
K Dawg. Interesting guy. Cool dude
I really like Dr Adkins, he goes into a lot of detail but I feel like I really understand it as a result. I probably wouldnt come to class if it was like the others who teach it who just plug into equations. I like the class.
I love the way he teaches, really focuses on fundamental understanding and then on application. Best professor that I have had in the department. Recommend for 309 and 310 sequence.
Feel like I learned a lot, especially compared to some of my other classmates in other sections. Didnt just blindly plug into equations but focused on why. Good guy
The epitome of a professor who loves the subject and loves teaching.
Excellent teacher that makes everything clear
Smart guy who knows how to take a complicated subject and break it down with lots of application. Accessible outside of class and easy to interface with. Really loved the class because of Dr. Adkins. Taking for 310 and high recommend for the 309 & 310. Other classmates simply said they learned how to plug into equations but I feel like I learned.
One of the nicest and most knowledgeable profs at Riddle. Lots of credibility as he was a former A-10 pilot in the AF and really knows his stuff. You can tell there is a definite passion for aviation. Take notes from his lectures and ask questions in class and you should do fine. Very approachable if you're stuck and wants to see you succeed.
Awesome guy with lots of experience! He is authentic and I learned way more than in my other AeroSci classes. Easy to visit and ask questions of in class. Favorite prof in department. Made aero fun, learned a ton. Best 309 and 310 teacher
Great class and I appreciate his use of open educational resources
Dr. Adkins brings a lot of previous coursework together and makes it easy to understand through analogies, learn a ton! Emphasizes concepts over math unlike other profs who teach the same
I like the way Dr. Adkins teaches. I feel like I learned more in a more meaningful way. Taught us the material and how to think. Made it interesting. Liked high speed flow the best. Recommend.
Dr. Adkins is one of the most caring professors at erau. He teaches the class in a way that it all makes sense and cares more about the concepts of the subject than the math. Please take him if you can!!! He is truly an awesome person!
Has a PhD in aerospace engineering and used to fly the A10 for the Air force. Coolest and most caring professor I've met.
Dr. Adkins is the best example of someone who brings the subject matter alive, fav class
Professor Adkins makes the class very applied and I actually feel like it will benefit me in my career. Highly recommend
Hands down, the BEST professor at ERAU. Cares genuinely about his students and their success. Encourages visiting him during office hours, even just to say hi. Very engaging in class and has an incredible ability to make the class material relevant, relatable, and fun at the same time. I hope Riddle is smart and pays him VERY well.
He is a great guy and the coolest professor at ERAU. Constantly talking about how he wont make you memorize any formulas because "it does no good." He only cares that you understand the concepts, which makes the lectures way less stressful and more fun to actually sit and learn. Only graded by 3 tests but not hard as long as you paid attention.
Best ERAU teacher I have had. He cares about you and makes sure you understand the concepts. No math Involved in either of his classes and he will always round up. had an 88 in the class and he brought my grade to an A. Highly recommend.
Dr. Adkins cares about his students and works hard for them if they do their part! Learned a lot more about aerodynamics than my friends in other sections.
I fee like this class really did make me a safer pilot. A lot of my other friends just spent their time blindly plugging in numbers. Dr. Adkins expects you to participate in class though. Good and approachable guy, highly recommend!
Dr. Adkins is a true gem at ERAU. He has lots of experience from his field, including testing aircraft designs as a test pilot and designing aircraft. Adkins uses a different approach to this class and focuses more on the qualitative aspects instead of "plug and chugging" into equations. If you wanna do well in his class, you can't be lazy.
Dr. Adkins has been my favorite prof so far at Riddle. He has a unique teaching style that focuses on the 'why' versus rote memorization. Because of this, I felt like i learned a lot. Students who engage in class do best in his class as he likes class conversation. Pulls from a lot of experience. Always available outside of class to help & support.
As long as you raise your hand and are apart of the conversation you will be okay. The way he explains some theories can be confusing but do not hesitate to stay after class to ask questions. The man is a magician at finding out how you understand concepts!
Dr. Adkins is the best professor I have had at Riddle. Very caring and wants the students to learn. Very dynamic in class and I like his teaching style. There is a purpose for everything that he does in class. We need more professors like Dr. Adkins! Wish I could take more classes from him.
Adkins is an outstanding teacher and mentor. His class is not necessarily easy, but if you show him you're putting in effort, he will reward you. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I actually wanted to attend his class because he's a cool guy. He has actual life experiences with course material in flying in the Air Force.
Much gratitude to Dr. Adkins for teaching with passion. It was an honor. I was really impressed and appreciative. My favorite class and the by far the best I have taken at Riddle in terms of quality and enthusiasm.
Dr. Adkins is by far one of the best professors at ERAU. Would recommend him to every student. The rather tough material was taught in an easy way to understand. He knows what to teach and is a great teacher.
By far THE BEST instructor I've had on campus. Loved his class overall and his knowledge on the subject was very noticeable. He explained things very well and the real life experiences shared with the class about the topics discussed were helpful. AS 309 and 310 with him were the best classes I taken.
Dr. Adkins has legit research going on and I found it fascinating to participate in it during this class and field experience. Fascinating guy. I've learned a lot from Dr. Adkins.
Dr. Adkins is awesome! He brings a lot of industry experience into class, along with a lot of research that he is actually doing. On top of that, he's a great teacher and loves to engage in conversation. Can't say enough about this guy - best in the college of aviation in my opinion
I'm presently taking my third class from Dr. Adkins and all three of these classes have been my favorite. He's my favorite professor that I have had at Riddle. His teaching style is great in that it is very practical. He is always willing to answer questions. I've learned a ton but he is also very inspirational - best professor at Riddle
Dr. Adkins is the best! He has accomplished everything that I hope to in aviation. In class he makes the material relevant and interesting, he makes if very applied. Outside of class he has been a great resource for me. My favorite class to go to and best professor that I have had at Riddle. Feel like I have learned a lot
The only professor that I have had at ERAU that the entire class applauded for on the last day of class. Do I need to say more.
Dr. Adkins is incredible. I had him for both 309 and 310 and felt like I learned more in those classes than any other. I really wish I would have had him for physics
Previously was an A-10 Pilot. He is very kind and cares about students learning the material. He relates with student and will go out of his way to help you. The best Professor I have had at Riddle!
One of the nicest and most caring professors at the school. If you pay attention and read over the slides, you will have no problem.
Please Please Please Please Please, if there is Kevin Adkins class is available for AS309 or AS310 I highly recommand to take his class.
I heard Dr. Adkins class described like walking into Willy Wonka's. He does make a tour of aerodynamics pretty magical. My favorite professor and class that I have had.
The way Dr. Adkins ran class and made class projects and labs resulted in the only projects/labs that I have had that felt worthwhile. Smart guy and learned a lot from him. Brings his experience into the class.
Kevin is a fantastic professor, he really cares about all his students and is always willing to sit down with you and answer any questions you may have. His course is a little test-heavy, in the means there are like 2 homework assignments and the other 3-4 grades are tests. So you need to keep your test grades up.
Dr. Adkins is fantastic! He has a knack for breaking down technical information/making it easier to understand and giving entertaining lectures with interesting explanations. Take his courses every chance you have.
Best professor at riddle, the exams are a bit heavy but as long as you study and understand the material you are fine.
I love how Dr. Adkins teaches this class. You end up having an authentic understanding and this has helped not only on check rides but in other classes. No, he's not going to give you a cheat sheet with a bunch of questions that looks exactly like the exam, and expects you to learn the material, but if you come to class you will do great!
This class is based on a group project and I learned a ton during it
I wasn't necessarily looking forward to aerodynamics but it ended up being my favorite, and that's really because of Dr. Adkins. He made the class interesting and relevant and the way he has taught and helped me learn to think has helped a ton in my other classes. Best professor at Riddle
Dr. Adkins is awesome. He makes every single class engaging. I love the way he teaches. Makes the treatment of the material practical and it has even helped me in other classes.
Dr. Adkins has an incredible commitment to his class, he gave a 2.5 hour review session for the final exam last night. Not only teaches you aerodynamics but how to think. Is definitely passionate about the subject and encourages a big picture perspective that links everything together.
Professor Adkins is arguably one of the best professors at Embry-Riddle. His course material is presented in a way that makes aerodynamics extremely easy to understand. I even got my money's worth because the class also doubled as art appreciation. 11/10, would take again and again and again.
Dr Adkins has a deep, genuine love for teaching, and it shows. Super easy to talk to, offers extra-credit assignments, and during my time - curved a test when we asked him to consider it. Some lectures can be a little dry, but that's just the nature of the material. Take him if you can - you won't regret it, I promise!
No need to explain. Professor has great knowledge and experience to teach aerodynamics.
I never had Dr. Adkins as an undergrad but sure glad that I ran into him in my graduate studies! This guy is amazing. A great depth of knowledge and makes the material engaging and practical. Got me to think about a lot and outside of the box. His own research informs the class. Definitely recommend. 6 out of 5.
I love how Dr. Adkins runs this course. He puts forth a real world problem that the students have the semester to complete. I wish more teaching and learning was dome like this.
As a grad student, I have now seen a lot of things in the classroom. However, one thing that I have never seen is a student ask to take a picture with a professor at the end of the course. That's how loved & respected Dr. Adkins is. He made class extremely engaging and I learned a ton about AAM. Helped determined what I want to do.
An incredible class that I learned a lot in. Glad that Riddle is offering this class now.
I learned a ton starting on day 1 and really like the class. Very knowledgeable and takes a practical approach. You can tell that he has been in industry.
Dr. Adkins put together an amazing class atmosphere. Had to reach beyond my comfort zone but it was really conducive to learning. Best class I have had in the master's program as well as being the best professor that I have had in this program. Professor has a great attitude toward students with lots of interaction. Broadened my perspective in UAS.
Smart dude. But he can explain things in a clear way that always relates. Definitely recommend for aerodynamics.
Dr. Adkins really makes the material easier to understand by using real world examples. His enthusiasm makes the class fun! Ton of experience. Favorite professor.
Kevin Adkins is the best professor at this uni. He is absolutely passionate about teaching, extremely knowledgeable, and humble as well. He is anti-memorization and plugging and chugging formulas; He wants his students to know the why of things. For the final, he did a 2.5 hour review until *all* questions were solved, on his own time... Respect
As a professor, Dr. Adkins was one of my most integral parts of my studies at Riddle. He inspires by his outlook and helps you understand why what you are studying is important. Notes from his class helped me on my checkrides.
Dr. Adkins is awesome! He will literally spend the time that you need in office hours to make sure that all of your questions are answered.
As I have made my way through all of my certificates and check rides, I was always most uncomfortable with aerodynamics. That was prior to this class. I now feel like aerodynamics is my strengths! Absolute favorite class that I've taken and I love Dr. Adkins teaching style and how he explains things. So glad that I took aerodynamics from him.
Dr. Adkins is not only knowledgeable as an academic but comes at class with pragmatism and a lot of real world experience. This really added to the class - UAS APPLICATIONS. Has more real world experience that he can speak to in class than the other profs in the program.
Favorite class, best professor. Sad when it ended.
Amazing professor who shows genuine care for teaching, an expert on aerodynamics, and goes above and beyond to help students understand the material. Slides are super dense in material, but he'll answer any questions until it's clear and always encourages students to ask "why" about material. Love the art appreciation aspect. Highly recommend.
Ultimately dedicated professor. Thoroughly enjoyed aerodynamics because of him and the energy he brought on a daily basis.
One of the hardest classes I have taken so far in college but got so much out of it besides aerodynamics.
Prof. Adkins is smart beyond words but will condense the text-heavy slides into more digestible concepts for the entire class. No calculator was needed, and that was because he wanted us to UNDERSTAND the concepts rather than plugging and chugging. He also held a 2+ hour review before the last exam on his own time. One of the best at ERAU.
there is no hw only quizzes and tests but they aren't hard. he does a review before them and the questions are straight off the PowerPoint. I would definitely take him again.
Amazing professor! Genuinely cares for the students and will take time to explain concepts and answer any questions. Attendance not mandatory but each class is valuable and progressively builds towards new concepts. Take his class if you can- you will learn a ton and have a new understanding of aerodynamics
Dr. Adkins was awesome. He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced but will ensure you are grasping what he is teaching. He teaches complex topics but does it in such a way you can understand it intuitively rather than memorizing. He held a final review at the end of the semester on his own time. Incredible professor, take him if you can.
Absolute best professor I have had and the class I have learned the most in, even besides aerodynamics
This is a class on advanced air mobility. Found the class fascinating. I didn't even know about most of thois stuff going on. Really interesting and suggest
One of the toughest classes, but Prof. Adkins makes it super engaging. His lectures break down dense topics and he's always happy to clarify. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for extra practice.
Adkins is such a good professor!! I took him for AS 309, and im so glad I did. Lectures can be boring at times, but he really teaches you to understand the material. Definitely take notes on what he says, not the powerpoints. The powerponts dont help too much, but he will tell you everything you need to know, so just take notes on what he says.
They say that intelligent people make hard things easy. If this is true Doc Adkins is a genius! Take this prof. Fav. Love aerodynamics now. Wish he taught 310. Start strong as class builds, also gets more interesting. Does optional review before final outside of class, ultimate respect. Be ready to answer WHY. Take the class and you'll get it ;)
This guy comes to class every time energetic, loves this stuff. Looked forward to coming to every class. Now understand a lot of cool stuff on aircraft thaqt I hope to work on.
I'm writing this after taking AS310. I can truly say that Dr. Adkins is the best and that his class prepared me to do well in AS310.Even though I have a plugnchug prof for 310 the way he taught 309 allowed me to understand what was not explained in 310.
One of a kind professor you definitely want to have at some point. He ensures students understand and can answer "why" rather than just memorising everything. He will amend lesson plans to ensure it follows students' pace. The class itself may potentially be difficult, but the professor makes it easier to understand. He loves his "art appreciation"
Dr. Adkins is one of the best professors at riddle. Tests are based on concepts instead of math, so be aware there is no partial credit. That being said, he will always take the time to make sure you understand what you need to. He cares more about the "why" than simple rote memorization.
amazing professor- makes coming to class fun, and makes sure you understand everything before you leave. grades are quizzes and exams only, but very easy if you come to class. he makes a 9am class fun, and i feel like i leave every class with a true understanding of what we're supposed to be learning. great great professor!!!!
Cares so much about his students - did a 3 hour final exam review during the evening, easy to talk to at office hours. Wants to see you succeed but does expect you to understand the material outside of memorization. Great teacher an learned a lot from this course.
Loves the beauty of aerodynamics, calls it 'art appreciation' :) Wants you to understand what he calls the 'why' of everything. Is great at making a story that builds from the beginning to the end of the semester that really helps you understand. Made aerodynamics my favorite class so far and has changed how I look at airplanes
Was selected as Professor of the Year and rightfully so. Accessible and takes hard things and makes them easy and interesting. Take him for any class that you can and you'll learn a lot. Best prof.
Designed the first class on AAM. This is something that I didn't know anything about and it turned out to be super interesting, even think I would like to work in this area. Has a lot of interesting insight and knowledge in this area that others don't. Wanted to take something else with him after aerodynamics, which i loved. Great person also!
Very knowledgable and passionate. He bases his lectures on his slides but a lot of what you need to know will come from his lectures. Sometimes I found it hard to follow along or make sense of it but he is super open to questions and also office hours! He's earned a lot of awards and done a lot of research and it 100% shows.
Actually the best professor at this school do not take aerodynamics with anyone else. Doesn't make you buy a useless textbook and is sooooo knowledgeable on the topic he teaches, doesn't just read off slides. If you need any extra help he is always available and doesnt make you feel stupid for asking questions. W professor.
I took his AAM class. Dr. Adkins is one of the most respected faculty in COA, LEGIT guy in general, treats you like a peer and has a WEALTH of knowledge in numerous areas of study. I can't recommend him enough, I'm so mad I didn't take aerodynamics with him when I had the chance. He keeps moving forward in his career and has not stagnated.
