This guy is a good teacher. He is tough on students who can't write, but rightfully so. He is more than willing to provide struggling students with help, if you ask. I would recommend if you want to become a better writer, which is the point of taking a writing class, but not if you want to skim through and not do work. Knowledge.
his form of grading is not clear
Horrible professor. Was not understanding at all concearning extreme health related absences. Instigates conversations in class then punishes students for talking. Uses all of his wife's materials. Teaches incorrect parts of speech. Will grade unfairly based on his opinion of you. Very rude and constantly talks down to students. Would NOT recommend
Allen is a good teacher. He is very into what he is doing. He grades papers and poems fair, knowing that we aren't professionals. He is a great teacher, and very helpful when it comes to ideas about what you want to write.
terrible professor. i would not recommend his class for anyone. hard grader.
terrible professor. i would not recommend his class for anyone.if you have him for comp get out of his class asap. hard grader and very rude!
I learned NOTHING from him. Half of the time he told us the wrong answer or just plain said, "I don't know, I'll have to look it up." Boasted about students failing his tests and graded unfair. For a room full of writers to get C's and D's on their papers was just comical. Over half of the students dropped or failed.
He's an all right teacher and it's clear he is interested in his field but he is totally USELESS in helping students write. Had many so-called rules of writing that I didn't agree with which he used as a rubric- including a "no dialect" rule because it "dumbs down" your writing. ...Yeah. I see how that worked out for Toni Morrison and Faulkner.
I will say this, you will learn to be a somewhat better writer in his class. But he is brutal when grading and I still don't know how I ended up with a B. There are better teachers out there so avoid if possible.
Ultimately, he makes you a better writer but he's is very brutal on you while doing so. He's not really open to other styles of writing, so learn his style and write like he wants you to. If you do that, you'll pass the class. He's a funny guy...and he always has weird stories to tell. He's not the worst, but take someone else if you can.
GET OUT! Horrible teacher, not clear in directions. Grammar tests are difficult (you have 3 chances) and you must pass in order to get a C or better in the class. Hard grader when it comes to papers.
He is really funny and and a great guy. I don't see why there are so many negative comments. Just put in a little effort, I found him very helpful.
Terrible Teacher, I've never met a professor so rude. His grading is ridiculous and I would avoid as much as possible
He's not that hard if you put in the effort to write the papers he assigns. He is very helpful and does care how you do in the class. If you go to him he will help! It's not that hard of a class.
I would not recommend this teacher at all. He has a very narrow minded writing style, and doesn't accept any other type. He does want to help his students succeed but is very brutal. I took his class and regretted it.
The guy is funny and has a strict grading style, get to know him and the class will be the best in the world
Either his way or no way. You do not get to know what he wants in his assignments until you read it in red ink on your returned homework. Only reccomend this teacher if you have a serious love for the subject. Looking for an easy Gordon Rule writing class, keep looking!
I don't know why he hasn't gotten better reviews on here because so far he is the best teacher I've had at FGCU! Homework assignments are not difficult at all and he pretty much always gives you full credit on them. Kind of tough on grading essays but he improved my writing so much! Only 1 test and a few online grammar quizzes, super easy!
Horrible teacher. This guy is one of the worst professors I have had in college thus far. He does not provide much help on anything, yet requires everything to be perfect in order to gain any credit. He is a very closed minded individual, whos philosophy is my way or the highway. I recommend staying away from this guy at all costs.
I don't know why people hate him. I throughly enjoyed his class. He is a tough professor and grades very harshly, but as long as you pay attention and avoid texting, you will be fine. Also, he loves talking about classical novels and laugh at his jokes!
If you want to fall asleep in class this is the teacher that will do it to you. Nice guy tells great stories but talks way to much. If you have questions he does answer them and if you need help he's always there to help but just needs to talk less.
If you want to fall asleep in class this is the teacher that will do it to you. Nice guy tells great stories but talks way to much. If you have questions he does answer them and if you need help he's always there to help but just needs to talk less.
Great teacher but talks way to much to the point I was falling asleep in class. He tells funny stories and is always willing to help a student out with their work or helping edit their paper. If he would just stop talking so much his class would be great
Professor Allen is one of the worst professors I've had. He is not helpful, and he tells you what to write instead of helping you improve your writing skills. Yo use the book a lot and take a lot of tests and quizzes This class is basically just a list of what not to write. He only likes one style of writing, which is his own. Plus he is rude.
Great professor! I took him for 1101 and 1102. He really helped me improve upon my writing skills. He's always willing to help you with your papers if you approach him about it. He's very specific about his assignments. If you don't do it exactly how he instructs you to, you won't get a very good grade in the class. Nice guy, great class.
Very nice Professor, gave the class an extension on an essay and allows late turn in for 10pts off (two days late max)
Pretty cool guy. Fair with grading and gives opportunities to improve your writing and your grade. I don't know why his reviews are negative. This worried me before I took the class but a friend assured me he was cool and he was. He even wrote me a reference letter! You need the book to read for quizes but the midterm and final are cake.
He's a nice enough professor, but there's not a whole lot of "creativity" allowed in his class. He'll look at your poem or essay and tell you to change it because it's not a "traditional" or "usual" writing style. You can be creative in the class, as long as you follow two pages of guidelines and after he tells you not to rite anything creative
Overall he is not a bad teacher, I feel like I did improve somewhat with my writing. But, I have never taken an english class that had so many tests and quizzes. You are constantly using the textbook. For the essays, he accepts one type of writing and it allows no creativity at all. He takes attendance but it wasn't for a grade.
He's pretty clear about what he wants in his assignments. He's not that bad as long as you make sure you do exactly what he wants. All the papers and quizzes are based off of the book so make sure you have it to reference all the time otherwise it'll be difficult to pass. Other than that he can be sassy sometimes but he chooses interesting topics
He's a tough professor for a first class in college, but he's also great. If you're looking for easy, this isn't the professor for you. But, if you're looking to learn and have fun in class, he's perfect.
It was Allen's first time teaching CRW 3111 Narrative Techniques. He is a cool professor and the class was fun and interesting. The class is workshop-heavy (you write a short story and classmates give feedback). People created very good stories and all of the feedback was constructivepolite. It was fine. I wish we got to write more, though!
It was kind of a waste of time. Read 2 stories by classmates a week, post online, then repeat what you said online to the class. Every week. When it's your turn, ignore everyone's opinions and just follow what he tells you to do because he'll mark you off if you don't. He hates sci-fi pieces, and don't ever criticize newspapers and you'll pass easy
Many comments I read that were negative claimed that it's his way or the highway. He is specific in what he wants to see-- Kind of like employers. He helped craft me into a better, more disciplined writer. I had him for Adv. Fiction also. His sense of humor is good. If your story needs work he'll tell you, which helps for future publishing.
If you write your papers how he says you should set them up, you should have no problem passing. Attendance is a good chunk of your grade which helps if you come to class religiously. Quizzes are on canvas & open book. All assignments (not the final paper) are completion grades. If you do the work & come to class, it's hard to get lower than a B.
He's pretty easy, very relaxed and as long as you do the assignments there is no way you'll get less than a B in this course. He's easy to talk to. I would've taken him again for sure if he fit into my schedule.
After reading ratings on here, I expected great things from this professor. I was greatly disappointed. If you are expecting to improve your creative writing, this is not the class for you. He expects things to be done his way and he is very unclear on what he wants. He barely lectures or teaches actual principles of writing. Would not recommend.
Kevin Allen is great instructor if you want to learn.
I am graduating fgcu this year and looked back on all my professors and instructors and decided i enjoyed all of them and their classes except for one professor. Prof. Allen always gave me bad feed back for papers, he would help me in class write a paper then give me a bad grade on it. Very rude man as well, terrible manners
He was a good prof, very detailed in what he's looking for and how to structure essays. You will definitely improve your writing if you take this class seriously. He gives useful feedback so don't be afraid to ask if you don't know how to do something. Be sure to check modules on canvas first because it usually has everything you need.
Since this is an advanced fiction writing class, all we did was write our own stories and have a workshop in class on them. However, in the beginning of the semester, we watched a movie and did a lot of reading of short stories. This is a really fun class and it's very helpful if you're serious about publishing a piece of fiction.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor makes it clear how he wants things done, and if you follow his rules, you can easily pass the class. All exams are online and he gives a nice study guide. Classes were fun and interesting, I would take again.
Super straight-forward class. Prof. Allen does not seem like one to give out any 100s, but getting an A in the class is easy as long as you make sure you go to him for feedback on papers.
I really enjoyed having Prof. Allen as a teacher. He gave us the opportunity to discuss a lot in class and although there was lecturing he made it more of a group effort where we could discuss controversial issues, which I think is very interesting. He is a fair grader and you will get an A as long as you really try on your essays.
easy prof dont miss class
Professor Allen's class was easy all semester, basically just attendance and short quiz grades, and he talks a lot. At the end of the semester, Kevin realized that we had't done anything productive and assigned 3 essays in 3 class periods. Essays are 60% of our grade so you can imagine how stressful this was. Would definitely recommend not taking.
If there is one person you listen to let it be me. Professor Allen is by far the worst professor that I have ever taken. Save yourself, do not do it. Completely unorganized and took more than 6 hours of my time outside of class per week. No rubrics yet harsh grader. Condescending and rude. Horrible experience. Made me never want to write again.
Allen seemed like a great professor at first, he only gave us the occasional quiz and class consisted of him talking. However, he is extremely unorganized; the first two months was spent writing an introduction. As a result, the last three papers were rushed. These papers are 60% of our grade and on top of that, he is a harsh grader. Very stressing
Has a melt down when you don't favor his ideas. He has no problem belittling you in front of the class and has no interest in your personal life or you as a person. If you are going to have an issue getting things done on time or showing up to class he has no remorse and don't expect a response when you email him for feedback or questions.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. He does not care if you are sick and have doctors notes, does not care about emergencies, he will call you out infant of the whole class for making any minor mistake. He is very ignorant to his students and thinks the world revolves around him. He is a know it all and makes me never want to write agai
If you are actually interested in creative writing, DO NOT TAKE HIM! The majority of his class was writing poetry. We did one actual creative writing assignment but it is a group assignment. His lectures are pointless and you will just waste your time. His grading depends on if he likes you and if he likes your work, not if you follow his rubric.
Mr. Allen is a chill teacher so to speak. But that's not helpful in the fact that he is a teacher and I needed help on my paper and basically called me dumb for not knowing how to do it because he didn't explain it. He tells us to peer review our fellow students papers but yet he can't even look at ours. He doesn't care if you fail or pass.
Allen gives assignments almost every class as well as homework. If its not done to his liking you wont get a passing grade. He doesnt give actual grades, eg 18/20 but he grades you either as complete or incomplete. It takes a few times of him explaining an assignment before youll actually understand. Would not recommend.
I took his class online and it wasn't that bad, compared to in-person reviews. He still takes forever to email you, we basically spent 2 months not doing anything and now we have 3 essays to write 1 month before the semester ends, which is 60% of our grade. He also wants you to write how he pictures it in his mind. smh Would not recommend.
Hes not a bad professor, even though I took him online due to COVID, but hes just a really harsh grader. For all my papers, Ive gotten a B- at best. And he doesnt tell me why. Its nearly impossible to get an A on a paper, and that makes up most of our grades. Im an straight A student, but this is the only class I got a B in.
Prof. Allen was ok should try to find more if possible. He was not very specific when it comes to feedback and would often have subjective criteria. Also, he is very formulaic when it comes to papers. If you don't have all of the elements requested you will not do well. He was available during office hours and answered questions promptly. Good luck
I'm taking his class online and need to plan my days accordingly to work on all my classes. He does not have a list of assignments or due dates in his syllabus or on Canvas so every assignment will be posted at random. He posted an assignment Wednesday at 5:30pm due Friday. From previous reviews it is obvious he does not care about student success.
This man is the rudest professor I've ever had. He grades but what he wants and how well your essays conform to his idea of how they should've been written. When asked to describe the grade you received he states the rubric is clear but it simply isn't and results to belittling you and tries to explain to you what you did wrong.
I've spent my entire life reading and writing and Dr. Allen doesn't seem to have any idea what modern books contain. He very much only grades based off of what he likes. For example, he seems to only like authors like Hemingway and thinks that's the way to write. He also doesn't bother to teach you how to actually write in a creative way.
Honestly I am not that good at writing essays and I passed so as long as you turn your work in and proof check it you will be fine. If you are having trouble with your essay then just ask him to read back over it and he will give you ways to fix it. Again not good at writing and passes the class just turn in work.
Had him for comp 1, good teacher! I did well but not everyone did. The class was easy enough and he gave good feedback. We didnt really use the textbook. It was just 4 big essays and you work towards that every week.
this professor is absurd with his grading scale and will not settle for anything slightly out of his criteria with papers. I am a great student and work hard, and he has lowered my confidence and made it an extremely difficult time for me to enjoy myself in the class.
Allen is not super difficult to deal with, but easier professors are available. He has a very specific style of writing and does not like deviating from it much. However, he gives example essays and is willing to give advice on how to improve your paper. If you pick up things quickly and are on top of your work, he shouldn't be much of an issue.
It is almost impossible to get 100% on a paper because he only grades them a 0, 65,75,85, or 100. I wrote some very good papers, but he still gave me 85. He also can be too sarcastic like it's rude at times. The nice thing though is that there is not very much homework.
the professor is an extremely picky grader and gives little to no feedback on your papers. He does not provide us with many resources to improve our writing, assigns due dates with little notice or time, and overall feels like he disregards our class struggles. safe to say this was the most stressful class on my schedule.
Kevin takes mental note of who uses the bathroom during his class and holds it against them. If he even sees your phone on your desk, you will be yelled at. He makes you feel dumb if you can't answer his really weirdly specific questions where he cold calls on everyone. He will put you on the spot infant of everyone and make you feel uncomfortable
I don't know what I can say to warn you DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is beyond rude if you answer a question wrong, he cold calls constantly, every time you miss a class your final gpa drops 10 points, and he marked us all absent one time even tho the whole class was there bc we were sitting outside the classroom waiting for him to unlock door
Mr. Allen is a pretty good teacher, though he is a tough grader when it comes to essays. He provides clear guidelines of how essays should be written, but even so, obtaining an A for any of the papers he assigned proved to be difficult. Overall, the class is very easy to pass as long as you show up to class, pay attention, and complete assignments.
He gives you guidelines that he expects to see in your papers. It's different from what you may have already been taught. He wants the best from you, but you will have to work hard to get it. You will struggle in the beginning, but if you truly listen to his lectures, he will give you instructions on how to get where he wants the paper to be at.
I can understand why people don't like him but I am a big fan of Mr. Allen, I took him in back to back terms. He's very particular and I've heard there are easier teachers, but if you pay attention to his instructions and actually follow them you'll do very well.
A little to extreme about everything for a Comp 1 class. Very judgemental and passive-aggressive. Would not recommend his class
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! only grades papers based off his own ideas and opinions, if its not exactly how he wants it, you will not get above an 85 on any paper. Sometimes rude during class, cold calls on on students randomly, and gets angry when you answer wrong. He has his favorites so stay on his good side. He also just doesn't really respond.
Professor doesn't give clear instructions, terrible grader and if he says your paper is good he will later on say it's bad he wants it written like how he'd write it.
The professor likes to engage with the class which means you would need to participate during lectures. He's very specific on what he wants to see on your proposals, outlines, and essay papers. He is very strict on attendance. This class is easy, only if you attend his lectures and follow his instructions.
I have never had an issue with a professor until I had his class. I am an excellent student and I had to drop this class because of his attitude. He cold calls on students constantly and if he disagrees with what you have to say to his horribly worded questions, you will be called out for "not paying attention" in front of the whole class. Awful.
He is extremely picky, you have to write exactly how he wants or it will not be graded well. There is one way to do things, his way. You will have to submit everything multiple times just to get approval to go to the next step. Do not recommend.
Horrible Professor. Doesn't give help, Doesn't grade assignments till all the last ones are done. Doesn't grade assignments if they aren't thorough and complete. Would not take again!
its his way or no way.
its his way of grading or no way.
AWFUL. Worse class I have ever taken at FGCU. Did not teach and would just stand at the front and ramble on about nothing. Grades horribly, won't let you continue on to the next assignment unless you do the pervious one perfectly and in the exact way he wants it. I honestly don't know how this man is still employed.
Not a great teacher. He rambles way too much in class which does not leave us with enough time to really do any work. He's extremely condescending and you don't really learn anything, just do things based on his ideas. Classes are easy as long as you do the work but this teacher is very shallow.
Generally not a very nice or good professor unless you are blonde.
Take this prof if you want to cry in class because he won't grade your work! He will laugh at you.
All grades are either complete or incomplete. Evey quiz is based on the text book. Evey lecture is just a 3 hour review on what is due in canvas and maybe some videos. Never happy with work submitted and very opinnionated.
He's not great with feedback. If he doesn't like your idea, he often tells you it isn't good enough but won't provide explanation why and how you can do better and will make you start over and over and over again until the assignments are late and you get a late grade. Also attendance will be graded even if you're dying. He doesn't reply to emails
U dont wanna take him trust me bruh. Attendance is mandatory if u try and leave early or smth hes marking u back absent. U gotta beg him for feedback and he'll reject half ur assignments. He's sooooooo unlikable dude keeps talking abt his politcal beliefs and his ex-wife no one cares its so bad.
I had to drop his class after attending for only 3 weeks. He is a tough grader as he won't let you move on to the next assignment until your current one is marked "Complete." If it's not up to his standards, as in it's not exactly how he wants it word-for-word, then he'll keep returning your work with an "Incomplete." He's bad at giving advice too.
Loves to hear himself talk and only likes his own ideas pls don't take him
Do yourself a favor and pick another professor.
Does not give very good feedback. No feedback at all on essays. Was not an unpassable class but definably difficult as he does not tell you what he is looking for then just expects you to know everything. Attendance is mandatory and graded.
Straightforward and strict professor would be highly beneficial to those who seek that type of personality. A lot of expertise; however, does not give elaborate feedback to work and doesn't reply to emails whatsoever. No grading rubric, you're writing four consecutive essays. One bad assignment could lose an entire letter grade in your final grade.
I've never had any problems with him. If you actually try and ask him for help on essays and other work, you'll be fine. Try to get on his good side tho. Work is manageable and wasn't a hard class. Class is boring. He definitely does talk a lot.
If you want any real feedback you need to talk to him in person but be prepared to be ripped apart. very blunt feedback and pleading your case isn't worth it. If you're able to understand his feedback you will actually improve significantly, especially with using good sources. Far from a fun class but if you want to improve, take him. just be ready
Will never grade your work, hates to do his job, will argue with you about anything. If you take this class get ready to hear about his radical political views and sit through lectures that don't apply to the class. You get "creative freedom" but he will tell you your idea sucks and refuses to grade it until you bring up a politcal topic.
Don't take him, there are so many better professors. The worst thing about this class would probably be that attendance was 20% of our grade. That's way too much for us to be doing nothing for half the class. The assignments are either complete or incomplete. No feedback after an essay, if you try to ask for help he will just give you absurd advice
He was a really tough grader and hated everyone else's ideas that he didn't like. Was very rude to literally everyone and obviously had favorites. If you don't show up to class your grade WILL drop and attendance and essays are basically your entire grade. He did give very god feedback and help with improvements but was just a mean person.
