I hope, that in time, he'll get better. I think he has the knowledge, just not the teaching know how.
In class, he was sometimes hard to follow, but one on one, he was very helpful. He was definitely concerned with the success of his students.
mmmmmm this professor is soooooo hot!!!!! I couldn't concentrate. I recommend!!!!!!!!!!
If you did well in high school chem, you should do fine in his class. But, if you want to learn chemistry, don't get Alliston. I didn't learn much with him teaching. I did well in his class only because I taught myself & remembered my high school chem. Alliston is a boring teacher. Sometimes, it looks like he bores himself when he talks. Eek!
the worst chem prof. ever! He is very smart, but he can't teach anything. If you ask a question, he either goes around it or stalls on time so he doesn't have to answer it. I had to teach everthing to myself. I was more confused when I went to class.
He was difficult at first but once you get to know his teaching style he will grow on you. Enroll in his class, he needs all the teaching practice he can get.

Pretty good. Not the best at explaining more difficult concepts.
Worst teacher i have ever had in my entire life. Alliston couldnt hardly explain anything that we had questions on. He either avoided the question or told you to keep trying to work on it. Extremely disorganized notes on the board, couldnt follow problems he was doing. FYI if you cant never take him!!!!
Worst chemistry professor ever... Multiple choice tests --- sounds okay at first, until you realize that you don't even get partial credit for complicated problems if you mess up somewhere. Horrible quizzes - would be okay if you had a decent amount of time to work on them. Avoid this professor at ALL costs!
This guy does not answer questions at all!!! Very unorganized and his grader is greedy on quiz points!!!
He's a pretty good teacher. The lectures can be boring, but always take good notes and write down the example problems he gives. He's fairly open to questions, but sometimes won't completely answer them, or will tell to try one more time. Quizzes are difficult- study your notes and assigned problems. For tests know the concepts, not just the facts.
This class is not an easy "A," but he is a great teacher if you show up to class, take notes, and study. He takes time for questions and seems very tuned in to how the class is doing. I would recommend this teacher to most people, but if you don't want to try, then don't sign up for him.
Very good teacher. Kind and understanding; will work with students.
DR. Elliston was very helpful and an excellent instructor. I highly recommend his class. He is definitely an expert in his field.
He doesn't answer questions directly, he goes around the question basically avoiding it. He is nice and talks to softly so sit up front other wise dont take him unless u want to fail
I didn't like his teaching style. The thing that bothered me the most is that students most of the time correct him with problems that he does on the board. quizes every monday. Don't bother asking questions, he wont answer them. he'll just beat around it, but you won't get an answer.
A nice guy but laid back to a fault. I got a B but only because there was supplemental instruction. Yeah, you have to work for your grade.
If you haven't taken Chemistry before, DO NOT take him. He will just make you more confused. Gives weekly quizzes and chapter exams that are very easy. Curves a lot so it's really easy to get a high grade, if you read the textbook and do the homeworks.
very smart professor, knows his stuff. offers extra credit. very generous offer for an A in the class if you get above 85% on the acs final exam. exams were quite difficult but not impossibly so. had quizzes. no homework grades but homework assigned
Mot very helpfull. Monday quizzes. All problems and no theory. (he's not that good with theory) His tests are murderous, problems are above and beyond class work. The intro and exit exams for the students were identical, ie no learned information! Avoid at all costs, unless youre already a practicing chemist.
Monday quizzes, explains through problems not actual explanations, he's not to bad if your good from learning from examples which to me doesn't make sense to be able to teach only through that
he doesn't teach from the book, he picks and chooses what to teach. his ppt. slides are NOT clear. he tries to teach just by solving problems...he uses to explanation or reasoning behind it. his tests are extremely hard and have many problems that weren't even covered in class. AT ALL. it seems like he wants to trick you on the test. thats his goal
Test and quiz questions are nothing like the homework, he tries to trick you on the test and there is not enough time to take his tests.
Omg he was terrible. You have to teach yourself from the book. I felt like it was the only class I had, studying all the time and doing the homework. Tests were very very hard. Avoid him if you can.
This guy seems to really enjoy teaching and that greatly improves the over all class experience
I loved his class and his teaching style. You definitely have to go to class to understand the material. He curves the tests a ton so it's easy to get a good grade. Obviously, it's not handed to you, so yeah, you have to try but he makes it easy to learn. Definitely recommended.
If chemistry is not your strong point, find another professor. He seems to really enjoy teaching and is easy to listen to/understand. However, what is taught in class and what is presented on quizes and exams are completely different. There are a lot of grade curves and every monday there is a quiz. He might be good for some, but wasn't good for me
Dr. Alliston seems to know what he's talking about, but sometimes he explains things too quickly. If you enroll in his class, expect to learn almost everything straight from the textbook. For a five credit hour class, I've spend on average 15hrs studying each week. Definitely had to work for my grade and I'm getting a B.
Dr. Alliston gave out hard exams, but there was always a curve. The hard exams were great preparation for the final, which seemed easy after all of the things he tested over. I would recommend him, but also doing the homework he assigns and attending SI sessions
The class can be difficult if you do not study but it is completely doable. SI Sessions are very helpful and for a "hard" teacher he doesn't grade too strictly. He drops your lowest 5 (out of 15) quizzes with chances for extra credit. I struggled at the beginning but pulled out an A, so with work getting a good grade is achievable.
Tests were all multiple choice, but quizzes required more equations and problem-style work. He was willing to help and always answered questions that people asked.
His class is pretty straight forward. Do not study things in the book that he does not go over in class, you'll be wasting your time. He puts everything that he goes over in class in powerpoint slides on blackboard. If you memorize all of the formulas, practice their application, and memorize everything in the powerpoint slides, you'll do good.
Really confusing. Seems like he doesn't know what he is teaching and puts things on the exams that hasn't been gone over.
He was the worst teacher I have ever had at WSU! His tests were extremely difficult and he didn't teach to the same level he tested at. Everytime I would go by his office hours he was never there for help. Hire a tutor if you take this class with him.
Professor was clear and helpful. Go to SI before you start to struggle. It wasn't particularly hard to get a B in the class. I personally regret not putting more effort early on in the semester. Probably would have pulled an A.
Horrible teacher. His powerpoints are full of formulas and information but he does not go over any examples applying the formulas. Had a real hard time understand and getting the concept. I would not recommend him. He tested over things that he didn't talk about.
A good thing about the way he teaches is that he'll give you the powerpoints that he uses on Blackboard but with blanks in them. Bring them to class on your computer or printed out and it's a really good way to keep your notes. He usually goes over one chapter per week so it will help big time to read before coming to class.
He gives ppt notes for lectures w blanks so you can fill them it as he lectures. Quizzes every wk but he drops your lowest quiz grades & keeps the top 10. I barely learned anything from him, he does NOT teach well & doesn't do examples much. I was at a C-D+ all semester long but somehow ended up w an A-. Advise ppl to take Chem w Prof Crowley.
This class is very hard. HOWEVER, if you ask him for help, he will help. Also, he bumps your grade significantly after the final (because he knows the ACS final is impossible). He is really nice but the material is extremely difficult. Quizzes every Monday. Tests are very hard. But he is better than other Chem teachers I've had at WSU.
Lectures entire class period but the lectures don't really help. I took notes but I had to read each chapter a few times to prepare for tests. Tests are very hard but he curves them A LOT. I was confused the whole semester but ended up with an A by reading the textbook and depending on the curves.
Going to class and listening to the lectures is super important! If you pay attention, having the textbook isn't essential to passing. Tests are difficult, but he curves them a lot. Pay attention, and you should do fine.
Make sure you go to class - it's essential to passing. Take good notes and you shouldn't need your book too much. He curves the tests a great deal.
Clear, fair teacher. Tough tests, not too bad except for the 4th one. Curves if the scores are low. Online homework a drag but a good way to learn it. Weekly quizzes fairly predictable based off what he says in class. Good lectures. Extra credit available on some quizzes midway through. Put a lot of effort into the take-home Lewis structure ones!
The first 2 tests were very easy, 3rd was alright. 4th was super hard; not enough time. There are curves, but people did well and generally only 2 points were added back. Aleks Hw is assigned every week. quizzes every mon. Only takes best 10 quiz scores. ACS final is actually very easy and has a huge curve. Had an A- ACS brought it to an A.
Compared to all of the other chemistry professors, he is one of the easiest and best choices. I took him for 211 and got an A+. Pay attention in class and make sure you understand the chapters and you'll be fine. He is a pretty good professor and I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking at Chem211. Attending SI also helps a lot.
Oh this class has really made me work for the grade I have now. It's a no joke class. Be there EVERY CLASS, don't dare and skip. His instructing skills are fine, he teaches us everything we need to know just depends if you understand it. Do the HW even if it's not required to. Go to SI meetings, ask questions, get help and STUDY YOUR BUTT OFF.
Alliston was not too bad. His teaching methods were easy to follow, and he's there for you when you need him. Also, he provides homework assignments from the book which are not graded--so I highly recommend doing them. Plus, make cheat sheets before every exam. It'll help you pass the class.
Attendance isnt required, but his lectures are useful. He helps people understand the material. Gives quizzes every monday and drops one or two quizzes. Tests are curved slightly, the final has a big curve. Didnt use the book, but used ALEKS for hw, which is very useful.
Study study study..
Well knowledge, fair and respectful, I have gained a lot of knowledge. It is a good class to take if you are going to take chem 2 or higher. Homework is Aleks which everyone hates, and it makes you cussing when you doing your homework. Other than that Dr. Alliston is a very smart professor.
As long as you do the recommended reading and work problems you'll do well.
Dr. Alliston is a fair professor. Uses the online homework program ALEKS, which is a big chunk of your grade at the end. Textbook was not NEEDED, because he provides dense lectures and powerpoint notes. He answers all questions well and is always willing to do any examples. Attend lecture, work through ALEKS, and you should do well on the tests.
Dr. Alliston was a great professor. HIs lectures were amazing and very relevant to the material tested over. The book isn't necessary. Difficult class to get an A in, but he makes it very easy to pass. He drops quizzes and curves every test. Would definitely recommend for any student.
The class is hard but if you put in the work you can easily pass. I recommend reading the book but its not required. Go to class otherwise you will fail! He is very smart and will help students if you ask for it. Beware of the last test before the final, it was the most difficult by far! Also keep old test it helps you study for the final.
Alliston is a good teacher. The class is a lot of work and not easy. Tests are very difficult. You learn a lot with him and he kind of keeps it interesting. ALEKS is a pain.
Pretty good prof, gave solid lectures. Grading was spread out between homework, quizzes, etc so no one single area could kill you. Tests were very hard, but he graded them one a curve which made it ok. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I actually thought the online ALEKS homework was a pretty good program.
Never emails you back with questions, is very vague when you do ask questions and has zero empathy for students
The class wasn't too bad at all. I would just say do ALEKS ahead of time so you don't have to worry about it. The enthalpy test is the hardest. The final isn't too hard study study study and you will do fine b/c he curves it. Do good in the lab and on the quizzes in order to get an A. Go to class it helps and there is no point in skipping anyways.
ALEKS is the online homework platform used in CHEM 211. It will not be enough to prepare you for the exams. You will have to also do practice problems from the textbook.
Dr. Alliston is one of the best in the chemistry department at Wichita State. He helps you when you need help and if you go in to talk to him during office hours he's very understanding. The only bad thing I would say about him is that he can make you feel dumb sometimes by the way he answers your questions. But overall he's a good teacher.
Class is mandatory as well a studying if you want a good grade. He gives out a quiz every week unless he says otherwise. He goes over material really fast so studying is essential.
Really tries to help you understand whats going on in lecture. Hes great.
He is a nice professor, but the exams were hard an too little time to complete them, There was a total of 4 exams. The Aleks homework was not bad, it's doable. The labs were okay. Just make sure to study hard in advance and do practice problems.
Dr. Alliston is a great professor for Chem 1. The exams weren't too terribly difficult and had quizzes usually every Monday. In addition, try going to SI which helps a lot for Chem 1. He uses Aleks for homework which can be a pain, but overall recommend taking him for Chem 1.
The material is hard, but he is always available to ask questions. As long as you put in the work he will help you. The lab with what brought most of us down, but he curves all the tests! One of the best teachers to take chem from. I was scared about it and now I love it!
BEST PROFESSOR IVE HAD SO FAR!!! He always put the students before himself and made the class as understandable/enjoyable as he could! He made class worth attending and it definitely boosted my grade to the level I wanted it at and the information I attained I will keep for a while.
Alliston is the best chem 103 teacher. Of course the class is gonna be hard like its chemistry... but hes very helpful, kind, and you can understand him. Grades revolve around quizzes and tests, but as long as you study the book, youre good. If he sees and knows that youre putting in good effort, your grade will reflect that.
For starters, the professor gets very to the point & doesn't spend a lot of time on a certain subject. If you need extra help on something, I recommend attending SI. He knows his chemistry very well but not enough to actually teach it to the class. He doesn't update ANYTHING on blackboard. Expect many quizzes and frustrating Aleks homework.
He's a very stoic and calm professor. Very organized in his lectures and pedagogy. Lectures are great, and you'll learn everything you need from them. Has 4 tests including the ACS final. Expect a quiz every Monday. Doesn't use blackboard, which is his biggest shortcoming. Really should start using it. ALEKS is a bit annoying, but not his fault.
This class is hard, but as long as you pay attention, study, and go to SI you'll be fine. Barely any homework. Exams are hard but he curves.
Exactly what you would expect from a chemistry professor. He does his job and is always willing to clear up concepts. He is generous with grading quiz's and allows some to be dropped.
Literally the worst, I know tons of people who took him and said he has great reviews but hes really not that good, I agree with them... he doesnt give feedback on quizzes, doesnt respond to email, if one person aces the test youre screwed cause that means no curve... honestly, take your chemistry somewhere else and not at WSU
so by far the best chemistry professor at this campus! If he's avaliable just enroll with him, if chemistry isn't your strong point he's the director of the chem program here at wsu. He cares about your grade and is willing to explain things to you. If you dont understand he'll meet with you as well! I will be taking him for any chem classes I can!
Anytime you struggle with anything and email him, he doesnt reply. So goodluck getting help.
He doesn't care about his students. No feedbacks from any tests and quizzes. His tests are super hard and he doesn't hand out reviews. He doesn't reply your emails seriously. His class is boring and he only uses PowerPoints.
He is a very experienced professor and is quite respectable. He makes sure that everyone gets what they need and curves the exams accordingly. Chemistry is a very tough topic, but he helps alleviate and explains through real world applications.
If youre not naturally good at Chemistry I would highly recommend skipping Dr. Allistons class and taking Chem elsewhere. His teaching style consists of doing example problems with no explanation which is not helpful for most. We had test averages in 50s and no improvements were made to the teaching. Purposely a weed out class-dont do it!
Professor Alliston definitely knew his stuff. His lectures explained the concepts he was teaching very well, and he was always respectful, helpful, and open to questions or repeating important material before exams and tests.
The prof is a great teacher and he really tries to help the students. He is easy to understand and talk to.
If you've taken the prereqs for this class and study, you're fine. He puts all the PowerPoint on BB; easiest way to take notes is to annotate electronically or print the slides out. Expect quizzes most Mondays. The 4 exams are multiple-choice, so not much teacher feedback. Alecks hw was tedious. SI sessions were helpful with exam prep.
If you don't go to class, you probably won't pass. The lecture content is directly applicable to his tests. SI was very helpful. Expectations are clear. You will have to study, but if you keep on top of things you should be fine. ALEKS (online homework) was annoying at times, but overall it's not that bad. ACS final was also not as bad as expected.
Expect a quiz every Monday, online homework every week, and 4 exams (5 with final). Online homework helps, he answers question in lectures and you can always stay after class to ask questions. SI helps so much, especially right before exams, where they give AMAZING practice exams. Might be difficult/too fast if you have no prior Chem knowledge.
This is the first time I got such a bad grade in a class. It can be because his teaching's method is not suitable for me but he is a decent teacher. He's willing to answer your question and he's nice. However, it seems like what he teaches is just a surface of an iceberg, and most of the things he tests on is under it, be prepare for self-study.
Lots of examples in class, expect 4 tests and a quiz each Monday. Lots of ALEKS homework, and offers more example problems. Might be fast-paced if you haven't done chemistry much before, but SI sessions are a great help for what you don't understand well.
He is incredible when it comes to teaching and lectures. I think in order to get the most out of this class YOU have to put in a lot of work, but it is all worth it. He is also awesome at answering any and all questions you may have. Yes it is hard, but he isn't.
Very clear in his descriptions, has slides and does chalkboard work, will answer questions clearly. Go to class!! Attending lectures is so important. Tons of ALEKS homework and weekly quizzes. You'll do fine on tests as long as you prepare. It's easy to tell that he's very knowledgeable about what he teaches. Nice guy, I'd take a class of his again
Im not sure if the future classes will have Aleks but that made me stress more than the actual class. but overall it wasnt a bad class. he wasnt like a 10/10 professor but there absolutely could be worst. he answers questions and explains things pretty clearly. SHOW UP TO CLASS!
I understood everything so fast during lecture! I only ever needed to do practice problems outside of class to study, never had to teach myself. He isn't exactly super personable but he's effective and very nice if you ever speak to him one on one. Make sure to study for the weekly quizzes because they can be a great grade booster. Go to SI!!!!!!!!
I would not reccomend taking this professor. He relies heavily on powerpoints, and his teaching method is subpar. He goes over topics way to quickly. He also requires Aleks, an online program which is very annoying to use and very time consuming. I highly suggest looking for a different professor to take for this course.
Alliston is one of the better professors here. His lectures are concise - we go over topics/ideas and then practice problems. He's experienced and you will actually learn in his class. You won't pass if you don't attend class. Expect a quiz every Monday. Stay on top of homework and studying as you can get behind easily.
Dr. Alliston was all right. He knows what he's talking about, but aleks was too stressful. I was more stressed over aleks than the exams. For me personally, I had went to the office hours to ask for help, and he kind of gave me a look. Because of that i never went back. Go to SI Sessions!!! Go to class, if you miss one class you will be lost.
All around great professor, lectures are slide and demonstration based and very informative. ALEKS can be annoying, especially the prerequisite, but prerequisite doesn't actually apply to the grade so it's just something to get through. Quizzes require understanding and work, but not too difficult - exams are multiple choice. Solid class.
He is a great professor as long as you also understand his homework. Gives you enough time each week to do it though the homework. Though it can be a little infuriating at times, the homework is a good practice for the tests. And if you have a question speak up so he can see that you do.
This was my first college STEM course, and I had a great experience. I thought his lectures were clear and were supported by the ALEKS hw. He has a quiz almost every Monday and drops about 5 of them which is flexible. There were four exams and a final. The four exams varied in difficulty, but were all manageable. Overall, great course and teacher.
Overall would consider him the ideal professor. Has a lot of Homework between Aleks and take home quizzes but it adds a nice buffer in the grade book. More than happy to reexplain stuff in his class as it's very organized and he's planned out the whole curriculum. As long as you take good notes and study efficiently, you'll do great on exams.
Dr. Alliston was a decent professor. His lectures moved fast but he was willing to slow down in order to clarify anything. ALEKS work was oftentimes pretty difficult to get through and quizzes were not my favorite thing. As long as you take time to study for tests and use YouTube or SI sessions to fill in gaps, you should do okay.
There is ALEKS homework, which was long, but helpful and easy to get all the points. He also drops your worst 5 quizzes out of 15. Overall lots of buffer points, and his exams are multiple choice. His lectures are clear and helpful, but the class goes kind of quickly, so its hard if you've never taken a chemistry class before. His chem 211 was easy
Pretty average professor, not great but gets the job done.
I think he was a great Professor, lots of opportunities for getting a good grade because there's so much homework. Definitely a hard class because it's chemistry but if you listen to lectures and do the homework, it's super easy.
He does a really great job explaining concepts, but his class is still very time consuming. He gives quizzes every monday that you have to prepare for (they are often fairly difficult) and sometimes gives take home quizzes for the weekends that adds to your homework. He assigns lots of homework.
He clearly knows his stuff and conducts each class consistently and professionally. The lectures can be tough to follow at times as he breezes through some material quickly but takes time to work through key areas. Communicating with him via email can be difficult, he does not respond in my experience but does follow through with what you ask him.
Would fly through lectures and did not clearly explain things. I can tell he's educated in this area, but that causes him to think everyone in the class knows what he's talking about. I literally had no idea what was going on the entire semester. The test averages were always low (50-60%), and he never changed how he taught...
He knows his stuff, but teaches at times as if everyone in class was a chemistry major. There's plenty of homework, not all of it for a grade but it helps with practicing the material. He is very difficult to get a hold of outside of class.
Alliston is a generally ineffective professor. Lectures are needlessly arduous, with weekly quizzes that stray from the content presented on the four major exams. ALEKS homework was not difficult and felt like busy work. Extra credit is sometimes given, and the grading scale does curve depending on the course average. Lab was engaging, though.
Dr. Allison was very nice. He walks on his tippy-toes sometimes which threw me off a little bit. I found myself frustrated through the course because I felt as though the examples done in class did not prepare me for the exam. The exam questions were much harder. Gives you 15 quizzes throughout the semester and keeps your 10 best scores.
Professor Alliston is good, but his examples are introductory level and his quizzes following lecture are beyond introduction. ALEKS homework every week and due every week except on exam weeks, which he would then allow a week extension. Quizzes maybe 1 or every 2 weeks, some take home. He does drop your 5 worst out of 15. Exams have grade curves.
This class was difficult for me, but exam grades are curved along with the overall grade. I had a terrible high school chem teacher and still managed to get an A. Go to SI if you can. Lots of Homework through ALEKS on non-exam weeks, but you can get a lot out of it. Lectures aren't recorded. I like how Dr. Alliston teaches.
Really wants you to succeed in the class. (Even though I didn't) Really nice guy who definitely knows his stuff. Make sure not to slack off on tests, as they are a big majority of your grade.
I personally didn't struggle in this course but I would say to go to every lecture if you can. His lectures are quite quick and using the book as practice problems for quizzes and tests are beneficial. I didn't find SI helpful at all, other than the extra practice problems. The tests are weighted somewhat heavy so one test could make a difference.
