Professor Andrea is amazing! He really cares about his students and makes everything extremely straight forward. As long as you listen, you have all the tools you need to do really well on all assignments and tests-- didn't even have to study much!
Great Professor! He's really helpful and easy to understand, but also is awesome and friendly in office hours if you need some extra explanations. He's also super inspirational and encouraging to his students during lecture, so make sure you go; you might get some wisdom with your code!
Professor Andrea is super awesome. Great doesn't begin to describe how thorough and engaging his lectures were. Best professor I had all semester. A real gem of the CS department. Hoping he will stay!
Extremely knowledgeable in his area and passionate about it, best professor this semester.
Andrea is a great professor. I really learned a lot in the class. I would like to take more classes with this professor. I left the class wanting to go further into C programming and UNIX programming. The class is not overly difficult, it comes down to paying attention to the details and stating on top of programs.
Professor Andrea is one of those rare professors that makes a subject come alive. He is both passionate and extremely competent. His lectures are informative and reasonably interactive. His tests are a good representation of the course and he grades them fairly. I would take any class by him in a heart beat over any other professor I've ever had.
So enthusiastic and pretty funny during his lectures. Tends to go over time and leave some content out but he's very helpful overall. There are a few papers for this class but nothing unmanageable. I hope I can take him for future classes
Dr. Andrea is one of the most talented teachers that I have ever had, not only at GMU, but throughout my entire life. Entering CS 110 along with a series of 400 classes I thought that I would be in for a boring experience. I honestly would have been except for the fact that Dr. Andrea was the prof. Amazing lectures, gifted teacher, highly recommend
He does such an amazing job teaching the material in lecture that I rarely had to open my textbook. Provides great slides, and occasionally provides supplemental lecture videos. He is hands down the best professor at Mason.
Professor Andrea is a great instructor! I learned a lot in his class and he was funny! I enjoyed attending lectures and he found ways to make the class interesting and relevant. It was a good way to get an overall intro to CS. I wish I could take his CS 367 class but the times don't work with my schedule :(
Possibly one of the best CS professors I have had. He gives you so many resources for the course: video lectures, powerpoint slides, worksheets, recitation worksheets, previous quizzes you have done, code he did in class. Extremely friendly and accessible outside of class. Gives the best response for questions even on piazza as well.
One of the best CS professors I've had so far. To tell you about this professor, he has amazing, comprehensive lectures that compliment the textbook VERY well. Yet despite all that, I've made the decision 2-3 times to not go to class and I wasn't worried, because he puts up comprehensive video lectures on top. He goes above and beyond.
Professor Andrea is honestly one of the best professors for Computer Science at George Mason. He does his best make the material fun to learn and he is genuinely invested in your development throughout the course. Pay attention in lectures, begin projects early, and you won't have a problem getting an A.
Definitely one of the best CS professors at Mason.
Hands down the best CS professor at GMU. I wish he taught all my classes. Will bend over backwards (and do pushups) to make sure you know what's going on in class. Posts video lectures on blackboard to view later for studying or doing projects. Seriously, this dude is awesome. Do whatever you can to get in his class.
Prof Andrea is a pretty cool dude. Despite the monotone in his voice during lecture, he does a pretty good job of keeping the class somewhat entertaining. You might fall asleep in his class, but so long as you follow along and take notes outside of lecture on the powerpoints he posts online, you'll be fine.
Great Professor. Really cares about teaching concepts to you. Doesn't just hand over the answer either, great learning experience.
He literally dressed up as Santa for the final.
One of the best professors I've ever had, seriously. He's very enthusiastic about his teaching and really wants you to learn the material. He will have you very well prepared for exams and projects. If you have the opportunity to take him, definitely consider it.
Kevin Andrea is truly an amazing professor. He is funny and he makes sure his class is really entertaining. Hes the best teacher for a Computer Science class. Study his slides, do the class exercises, and you will get an A!
He is one of the best professors at Mason. Take this professor if you can.
The BEST professor I have had here at Mason. He is so sweet and understanding. He wants you to learn and will do anything you need to improve, a quality you dont find in many of the CS professors here. He thinks no question is dumb, so ask away. If he is an option for any class, dont hesitate to pick him.
If you take his class and you fail, you're an idiot! I didn't put much effort into 367 and got an A-. He is literally the best professor I have ever had. He gives exam reviews, he puts videos up of him solving problems that he went over in lecture (which are similar to exam questions), and he is SOOO respectful and funny. You gotta take him asap!
Gives great lectures and often provides in-class worksheets to help the students understand the lectures. Makes detailed videos on any topic that is requested. Provides a comprehensive review for the midterms and final. Provides a video going through a step by step of the final review. An amazing professor that sets his students up for success.
THE BEST PROF EVER! Prof Andrea's so smart and caring, he respects all students from different backgrounds. He is so welling to help and discuss the material inside and outside the class to make sure you got it. some of the classes were boring but he tries to make them not. He is funny. I didn't study really hard for the class but I still got an A
Professor Andrea is the best! Ive had him for two classes, and now I wish he taught every CS class because hes just so knowledgeable, caring, and helpful. Take him if you ever get the chance... especially if the subject is difficult for you!
One of the best professors at George Mason.
Best professor in this department. I hope he will have more senior level classes.
He's an amazing professor who really cares and helps students a lot. Tests are fine, projects are manageable, and he really really tries to teach the content well to help students. Great guy and I'd definitely take his section over anyone else's in the department. 100% the best
One of the best professors I've had. Goes above and beyond to really make sure you understand the material. Exams were fair. Literally posts everything you need for success online (video lectures, sample exams with solutions, livecode, etc.). Passionate, charismatic, funny, respectful. Just put in the work and an A is within reach.
This professor has a 5.0 rating here and he absolutely deserves it. He actually cares about students learning and sometimes takes time out of his day to make us videos explaining concepts to help us understand. I wish he would also teach CS471 as that class could use a good professor like him.
Amazing professor, probably one of the few professors that actually respects and cares about their students. Hes willing to go the extra mile for his classes and will provide video lectures and detailed study guides. Hes an uplifing guy that will do anything to help students learn, 10/10 Exams : Very fair, just do the study guides Projects : Fair
Lectures are amazing and powerpoint slides are available on blackboard and he will post video lectures if there isn't enough time to cover all the material in class or class gets canceled. The test reviews are the same types of questions that will be on the exams so there are no surprises. Prof Andrea made a difficult subject easy to understand.
Best Professor at GMU by far. He will do anything to ensure that you learn what you need to in order to succeed. Everything you need to get an A is handed to you. There is no way you fail this class with Prof Andrea.
Kevin Andrea is my favorite nerd in the CS department. His charisma is positively bewitching. I can easily imagine this class inducing an existential crisis if it were taught by any other teacher. The projects assigned are very interesting although I wish the requirements were more detailed. Overall a knowledgeable and a delightful man!
Professor Andrea is one of the best, best professors in the CS department. I could not have able to get through a lot of materials and important aspects in CS without his guidance and style of teachings. I would definitely take him again in any other CS courses.
There's a reason his ratings have remained top-notch on this site. Easily one of the best professors in the CS department and worth every last bit of the hype! His enthusiasm is contagiousTake him and you'll have a newfound love for computer science. Plus, Ive never seen a teacher quite as dedicated as him. All in all, Andrea's a rare gem!
The way he taught, the energy. It just inspired me to work hard and focus on where I went wrong. His assignments helped me learn a lot. If possible, I would rate him one of the best professors in the CS department.
Kevin Andrea is my favorite CS professor. His lectures are amazing, not only helpful for the class but super interesting and enjoyable. Fair amount of homework for the course but not too hard. Study the book and go to lectures and you will do great. Kevin Andrea is definitely the way to go.
Hands down, one of the best CS professors at GMU. He is so passionate about the class and his students. He makes a difficult subject look easy. It's not an easy class but doable since he will happily guide you along the way. If you get a chance, please pick him since he is AMAZING!!!
HE IS AMAZING. PROFESSOR ANDREA PLEASE TEACH THE OTHER CS PROFESSORS AT MASON HOW TO TEACH. He is caring, an AMAZING lecturer, and has the clearest grading criteria ever. He's so passionate about everything he says, you can't not be interested and love the subject. TAKE HIM!!!!!
Easily the best professor I've ever had at Mason. 367 is a hard class by itself, but he does try to make it easier for students to understand. You can tell he really cares about his students.
I typically judge a Professor by how many damn Youtube videos I need to watch in order to understand the content of their lectures. This Professor? Didn't require any outside sources besides occasionally viewing the videos that HE POSTED HIMSELF! Professor Andrea is one of the best professors, I envy the students who get to take OS with him.
Kevin Andrea is extremely caring and wants you to learn. He will spend hours making videos so that you can understand the material. After the midterm, he took 10 mins to ask how we are doing in the class & give any feedback to improve him. He starts online lectures with so much enthusiasm that makes me want to participate. The real GOAT @ GMU
The single greatest professor at GMU. Seriously, he is the gold standard that all other professors should be compared to. Never before have I seen a professor with such passion for their craft not just in their own knowledge, but in their ability to convey that knowledge to students in an effective manner. Best professor I ever had.
An amazing professor, kept me engaged with all of his lectures. The homeworks were relatively easy as were the first 2 projects. The last one was definitely much harder, I'd recommend starting very early. If you attend/watch the lectures and do the HW's the tests should also be pretty straightforward. There were 2 midterms and a final.
I am two classes into the semester so far and already can tell this guy is an amazing professor. He beatifully explains concepts in a fun and engaging way and is always full of energy. He also does not put himself above his students and holds himself accountable for things like going over class time. I can tell he loves teaching this class.
I was struggling with health issues while taking this class and still managed to pass it! The subject matter was easy to understand, mostly review since it's an intro class, and the projects were fun and interesting to work on. I would have done better if it hadn't been for my health, but as it is I'm very happy with the results.
The example of the best CS professor
Coming to his lectures is like attending a live gameshow, where he is the host. He explains difficult concepts BEAUTIFULLY. (don't mistake this for an easy class, he is simply an AMAZING TEACHER) At first I was skeptical of all his great reviews (maybe just an easy grade?) not at all. Not only did I learn so so much, I enjoyed it too. Praise Andrea
Took him for 367 and 471. BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
Solid guy. 10/10. Maybe even 7/5. He just makes the class enjoyable and engaging. You can't really go wrong here with this guy.
Great teacher, he cares about the subjects he teaches and his students.
Ill make it simple. Watch the lectures, and take notes cuz its alot of material, last project is extremely difficult even for the top students in the class. First couple projects arent too bad def 3-4 days of work. Good luck
One of the best professors at GMU. While teaching is his job he genuinely tries to improve his teaching skills and makes the class as fair as possible. He is always open to criticism and tries his best to make the lectures engaging.
In short, He's the GOAT. He really cares about his students and the course itself. I would recommend CS students to take him once before graduating.
the only good professor in the CS department
He puts in the effort to be a good professor. He wants to give students every chance to pass and make the information as accessible as possible (online videos for every topic, slides, extra optional online sessions). You will NOT regret taking this man as your instructor and I wish more CS professors at this school learned from him.
If you miss Prof. Andrea during your time @ GMU, you're doing yourself a disservice. He's not just the best instructor at GMU, he's a genuinely caring person and one of the few people in the department who wants students to succeed as bad as we do. Work hard, go to lecture (best lectures) and office hours, start early on projects, enjoy the class
I believe because students know he is a such caring and enthusiastic professor, they exploit him to make projects and exams easier. I was surprised that how a senior level class to be this easy, but students were complaining that exams and projects were hard. If you want an easy grade, take him. But, if you want to really learn 471?, It's not him.
Kevin is the best lecturer. Besides him mentioning redblack trees, he made the class feel amazing. The OS projects are difficult, however his tests are fair so practice! Homework helps a lot to prepare you. Pay attention to lecture, do the homework, practice the midterms, and you'll be straight. I'm glad I had him this semester :)
Hes the 367 and 471 GOAT, must take him if you can. As for the assignments If you made it pass 310 and 262 with As you should be able to get an A if u struggled hard expect the worse, last assigment for both classes are the hardest in the entire CS carreer, but theyre graded leniently.
Kevin Andrea is THE BEST CS professor you could take! Best review I have ever given. He really cares about the students, he loves the material, he loves to teach, and he is really good at it! Don't hesitate, take him if you can!
350 characters are not enough to rate Prof Andrea. He is one of the kindest humans to walk this earth. He is respectful, caring, a phenomenal teacher, and super accessible outside of class. This class is very difficult, taking it with him doesn't change that. If you want a great professor that knows the material well, Andrea is your guy. 10000/10!
Definitely one of the most humble professors ever at mason. He made 471 much less intimidating - the topics he went over were really informative about how an OS works with the hardware via software. The class isn't hard except for PA2, which took my group ~70 hours to do. Just note - this class is not easy to get an A in. GL to future students!
Two midterms and a final, they all reflect materials taught in class. Prof actually asks us how we felt about the tests and adjust the next one to make it fair. CS471 is a hard and the projects aren't easy. However, prof explained concepts very well. I am now a firm believer that Prof's lectures can even make my cat an OS expert.
Professor Andrea is amazing! His rating is already maxed out but I had to give my input. His lectures were never dull, and he gave his afternoon class so much energy despite us all being dead! He makes concepts so clear during class, but in case somehow you don't get it HE MAKES VIDEOS FOR EACH TOPIC ON BLACKBOARD! He deserves that 5 out of 5 100%
A truly nice human being. Take him!
Professor Andrea knows system programming inside and out, and he uses that knowledge and passion to make this the most engaging CS class I've taken. If you have the opportunity to take one of his classes, don't hesitate.
The best professor in CS he brings so much energy into lectures and makes it easy to pay attention despite the subject. This class is hard but Andrea makes this class a lot better. He walked into class on the first day with a lightsaber. Projects are difficult but that's to be expected, exams are fair and quizzes ramped up in difficulty at the end.
Prof. Andrea has amazing lectures and is able to make the hardest concepts in systems programming seem trivial. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend attending every lecture as they are very entertaining and engaging. The class itself may seem hard but if you put the effort into attending lectures and recitation you will thrive.
Only 3 weeks into the semester, and he is easily the best professor in the CS department.
Love this guy. Enough said, best there is.
Whoever rates Prof. Andrea anything less than a 5 has an issue with the innate difficulty of the class, not the professor. His lectures are engaging, his supplemental videos are invaluable, exams are copy paste questions from study guides (which do get long, but keep up and you'll learn), quizzes are fair, he stays on top of piazza.
Top tier professor. His lectures are awesome and if you miss a lecture no problem the videos he has up will go over the topics to a T. His office hours are extremely helpful too.
Simply the best. Enough said.
The greatest professor at GMU. Take him at any chance you can because his classes fill up extremely fast. Amazing lectures with some live coding, very fair projects and exams. You can have a cheat sheet for the exams as well. I miss the guy.
Professor Andrea is simply the best professor out there! His lectures are engaging and informative, made even better by their great sense of humor. They genuinely care about students and make learning a joy. Highly recommend!
Absolutely amazing! By far one of my favorite professors at GMU. He's incredibly helpful and posts a ton of supplemental material. He genuinely cares for the success of his students and I would take him for every class if possible. Projects are a bit difficult so start them early. Also, tests are a reflection of the review. Take him if you can!!!
Professor Andrea is one of the best professors at GMU. His class is super-interesting and engaging. He really helps out students in various ways, be it with the posting detailed videos about topics covered and project introductions. None the less, it is a four credit class and requires effort.CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS PROFESSOR AND CLASS
Professor Andrea is the BEST professor in GMU. I go to class and learn the material. His organization of lectures, recitations, and quizzes incorporate active learning and spaced repetition practices. I don't study much out of class and need only a quick revision which he provides! He is what teaching and learning feel like when done right.
He is the best professor I have ever had. Amazing lecturer.
Professor Andrea is the best professor I have had at GMU! Although the projects were a bit difficult for me, his lectures were very clear and concise and really helped me understand the concepts on a profound level. I would 100% take him again and I hope he teaches more classes in the future.
Professor Andrea was excellent for CS 571. He made the lectures very engaging and exciting. His exams are fair, and he is very clear in his grading criteria. He is an amazing and relatable guy who is really fun to talk to.
Best professor at GMU and its not even close.
CS367 is difficult, but prof Andrea made the class enjoyable. His lectures are very engaging and he incorporates group work for practice towards the end of most of his lectures. His exams are very fair and he provides you many resources to help you prepare for them. The proj were a bit difficult for me which affected my grade a bit, so start early.
Prof. Andrea is the best professor I've had the pleasure of being a student of bar none. His lectures are super engaging and memorable, so the content becomes easy to learn. He made Operating Systems (at grad level!) a walk in the park. The projects are tough though, so be sure to devote time to those.
By far the best CS teacher at GMU.
Had him for 367. The class is hard for sure, but he makes it so easy to learn the material. The exams weren't too bad just a lot to learn and grasp, the projects were def challenging and time consuming. Just goto lectures and you'll get most of the material, i didnt even mind having a 3 hr lecture in the morning cuz he's so goated.
His lectures are really good and it makes the material easy to learn. He's very caring and wants people to really grasp the material and also has a whole bunch of resources and recordings posted on bb to help learn which was really helpful to study for the class. The quizzes and exams weren't so bad but start the projects early.
Took class in Fall 23, if the other reviews don't make it apparent, prof Andrea is one of the best professors at GMU. He is very passionate about everything he teaches, cares about his students, and wants people to enjoy what they are learning rather than just check off a box that it was taught. A must take class if he is teaching it.
He is very enthusiastic about the way he teaches. He posts additional lecture videos if you have a hard time with a certain topic. He does not use the textbook for quizzes. This is a project-heavy class, so make sure you are putting enough time for them.
He is my glorious king, speak fluently English, makes amazing study guides, loves what he teaches. He even cosplay as a One Piece character during the mid term. TAKE THIS GUY, he gonna make you look like you're 6 feet tall, have 6 pack abs, and make 6 figure salary.
He's passionate about what he teaches, and that makes a world of difference when you're learning something. The videos he uploads on BB reviewing the concepts were super helpful when completing labs/projects and just general studying. He went out of his way to make a great study guide outlining all topics. Study guides and exams are nearly 1:1!
Andrea has a unique ability to make the course material seem trivially easy. No doubt among the nicest professors in the department while still maintaining academic rigor. Stop reading reviews and sign up already.
CS367 is difficult, don't get me wrong, but Professor Andrea is genuinely one of the best professors in Mason, and he will make the course content as painless as possible. You can tell that he does genuinely care for his students and does want only the best for them. I recommend going out of your way just to take any of his courses tbh
Hands down the best professor I've taken at GMU. He truly wants you to learn and maintain the knowledge he gives out, and is extremely passionate about letting his students grow (I also love his humor). CS367 can be seen as difficult, but with the right professor it is easy - and that professor is Kevin Andrea.
Best CS Professor Ever.
If the other reviews don't make it obvious, Prof. Andrea is one of the best professors at GMU. He is very passionate about teaching and genuinely wants people in his classes to succeed. His exams are also fair and he even allows a note sheet. His sections fill up extremely quickly, but it is 100% worth trying your hardest to get into his sections
Easily the best computer science professor I have ever had. His lectures are engaging, his exams are straight forward, and he's super enthusiastic about the subject matter. If you use the resources he provides, you'll do just fine and learn quite a bit!
262 is already built the same for all classes, except exams and quizzes. his exams and quizzes are the best thing to exist. why? because he prepares us adequately (i have bad grammar, sorry), and doesnt give trick questions. his videos and study guides made me learn more about C than if I had followed a gonzales guide. No joke, please take him.
I mean need I say more......
One of the best professors I've ever taken
GMU CS Departments best professor, incredibly passionate and cares about what hes teaching. Exams were easy and were very similar to the practice exams and projects weren't hard.
One of the best CS profs I've had, so I'm excited to take him for 367 next semester. His exams were so straightforward b/c I studied his practice exams; he's incredibly nice and enthusiastic about CS; he's willing to answer any question and does numerous live-coding sessions during lectures--there's so much more that's good. Take him if possible!
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! Not going to lie was considering switching majors but somehow he made C and pointers and the complicated topics enjoyable and digestable.
probably the best professor in the CS dept at gmu. great lectures and you actually learn and retain information with the way 367 is structured by him. exams are super straightforward and very similar to the practice.
Professor Andrea is the BEST cs professor I have had so far. He is so kind and cares about the success of his students. He is the definition of a dedicated professor. On top of giving amazing lectures, he uses his free time to record videos of him reexplaining each lecture. His exams are just like the practice exams he gives. TAKE HIM!!!
Basically imagine if Santa Claus was your CS professor
Andrea is the best professor ever!!!!
Dr. Andrea is a revered, almost mythic figure, only whispered about in student folklore. When you finally encounter this supreme grandmaster of pedagogical arts, you are quickly enlightened by the sudden revelation that the legends crumble under the sheer majesty of his greatness, leaving you in awe of his divine wisdom and commanding presence.
There are a lot of resources to gain knowledge: live lecture materials, recorded lectures for each week, video explanation of exams, homeworks, and projects, feedback on exams, projects, and homeworks. He is very much respected and nice guy. The only problem is laziness. Expect 3-4 weeks till you receive grades for the exams.
his video lectures saved me. he is so caring. 2nd class with him. no regrets. if you get a seat, consider yourself blessed by the gmu gods... as far as material, yeah, it is a lot!! its not too bad, but i felt the pain while studying for finals. its a lot, but midterm1 and midterm2 arent a lot of content
This is my second time with Dr. Andrea, and I have yet to see from other professors the level of passion and commitment to pedagogy he brings to his classes. From amazing lectures to helpful videos and slides to just treating his students as colleagues and with respect, he sets a gold standard on how to teach that many try and fail to replicate.
One of the best CS professors at the university. The material is challenging but Andrea makes it easy to learn with engaging lectures and helpful resources like unstuckstudy. Definitely worth taking.
This professor makes the course far more difficult than necessary. His grading is harsh, feedback is vague, and emails go unanswered. Exams are tricky and not fair. You will teach yourself everything. If you can, take this class with someone else to avoid unnecessary stress.
Avoid this professor if possible! Extremely unhelpful and unapproachable and rarely responds to emails.
This class needs another word for boring!
I dont even have him as a prof but he has his lectures recorded for anyone to use in CS 367 and it feels like a fever dream. The quality and explanations are absolutely amazing and im actually learning/understanding the content. Thank you Prof Andrea.
This is my second class with Professor Andrea, and he still remains as one of best professor in the department. I cannot put into words how amazing he and his lectures are, even for a hard course like CS471. For the class, make sure you have a good partner for the projects and homeworks (it helps!) You should always take Professor Andrea's courses
Guy is a true departmental gem. Lectures are good, and he posts recorded versions, broken up by topic online to review or if you missed class. Project is hard, but that's assigned by a department head, not him. No curve but he grades exams (final especially) very gently. Gives awesome pep talks on exam day like a great dad. I knew he really cared.
The best professor I have encountered at GMU, no competition. He genuinely cares about the students and is deeply passionate about the course material. This class is not as difficult as others make it out to be, as long as you work hard to understand the material. Highly recommend taking any class he teaches.
Such a wonderful, wonderful teacher. No professor beats him.
He makes lectures so engaging and fun, which really encourages you to show up every time. Hands down the best professor I've ever had.
Please do anything you can to take him. Easily the best and most enthusiastic professor at GMU. He teaches so well and explains complex material in such a digestible way. Attendacne is mandatory but his lectures are nothing you want to miss!
Easily one of the best professors at GMU. He's always so enthusiastic to teach and is never a bore during class. He offers SO much material (videos, different sets of slides) to help with the topics of the course and gives great feedback on HWs and exams. The PAs are not the hardest things in the world, but they will take long to do
He is the goat
I had him at 9:00 in the morning and he is worth waking up for. He makes me feel ready to engage. Although sometimes I feel groggy, it is worth it. No matter what time his class is at, take it with no questions asked.
