A very rare breed of English teacher that will bore even the most anxious student. This breed of teacher will read right out of the textbook, and will require almost perfect attendence even though you will be better off reading from the book yourself.
unprofessional, likes to count weekends for late days, very opinionated, and epitimizes everything a public speaker should not be
He pushes his opinions on others in the class. Teaches about being a profesional speacher but demonstrates the complete opposite of that. His class is hard to stay awake in and i wouldnt recommend his classes to anyone!
I had KB several years ago now. He's a nice guy. He generally cares about students. He doesn't put up with people who try to use him. Speech classes are generally lame to begin with, so given what he had to work with he did a good job. I'd say he's an above average prof.
He wasted a lof of the class time. Very boring!
Kevin is a cool guy. He's really tough, unlike the other speech teachers. You do learn A LOT from him though. Practice your speeches like a mofo and you'll do just fine. :-)
If you are good at speaking infront of people take this class. If you don't have a natural ability to talk infront of people DON'T. I never practiced for a speech BUT I can easly talk infront of groups so I got an A. DOES touch girls a little too much.
He is really tough and doesn't put up with people being lazy. On the other hand, he probably cares more about students than any other teacher I have had here. If you cheat he will probably catch you. He assumes you read the book, if you don't his lectures seem unclear at times. He plays devil's advo
He has a really bad name on campus, but don't believe everything you hear. He can be a tough grader and really get under your skin at times but he cares about the students and is actually a pretty cool guy. He's intimdating at first, but really, he's just looking to have a good time in class.
If you are great at giving speeches don't take him, you have to take a test on speech giving and crap like that. If you suck at getting up and giving speeches take him, only 1/3 of your grade is on actually giving your speech. If you are actually looking for a class on how to give better speechs, look elswhere, he babbles about communication!
This guy is the WORST. Has no compassion, expects the impossible, and loads on the work. He is permanently in a crappy mood.
He likes to intimidate you to think his class is difficult, but it is easy and he is an easy grader. I got an A in his class, but I practiced my speeches a ton. He has very definite things he is looking for in your speech and I thought he evaluated mine well.
Kind of a tough grader, but does care about students and their futures. Will refer you to other profs in the RTF major and help you get your foot in the door.
Kevin is just a crazy cat who won't make eye contact when you talk to him. He also hates hats. If you are blind and hatless...take his class. Seriously though, he's nice enough and will inform you of work in the field if he hears it. Very concerned about future of students.
Good teacher, had him for speech my first semester. Unlike other teachers he expects students to come to class and hand in work on time with effort put into it, students that don't like him often miss class and are lazy. Hard exams, but speech's are fun and easy in his class. You learn a lot about communications to.
i have mixed feelings about backstrom. he's really picky, but he wants you to do the best you can possibly do. he expects a lot. some class days were very entertaining though. he says the word "that" out of context all the time...it's funny.
He tends to focus on things he KNOWS rather than things his students need to know. He's an easy grader, just study and make sure you read your book and take the online quizzes!
The discussions were completely irrelevant to the material and we never knew what chapter he was trying to discuss. (and he wondered why we all did so poorly on the exams)
Rambled on for hours about things not relating to topic. Huge name dropper and expects us to be impressed that he knew dr. suess and mr. rogers. Picky on most assignments, but not extremely hard. Got graded down on one speech because my shoes had scuff marks on them. Take speech with another teacher if possible, it will be much easier.
SWEET!
AWFUL!!! He doesn't grade fairly, and the information he talks and talks and talks about during class has no point to anything. If he likes you he LOVES you and if he doesn't he HATES you, and he grades accordingly. If you can avoid him... avoid at all costs. Terrible teacher.
He has favorites in the class that he calls on every time. If you are not a "favorite" then he may not even know your name. Grades unfairly and is extremely UNAPPROACHABLE
Kevin is the best, take speech with him. He will scare away the slackers!
Terrible. Class time (other than tests and speeches) was TOTALLY worthless, yet he requires attendance. He LOVES to ramble on for hours about nothing and loves to brag about people he claims he's known. Never used the text but then at test time pulls the classic "according to your textbook list the 6 ways to..." Avoid if possible.
a fairly good teacher. gave you the material to help you succeed.
Avoid at all costs! Crazy teacher....but does care about where you go in the future.

Backstrom is an interesting teacher. He is a very tough grader first of all. If your looking for a breeze class this is not it. If you are a bad to moderate speaker you will struggle in this class. He expects close to perfection on his speeches. but his class is easy day to day and not a bad guy, a little old but okay person, very opinionated.
Backstrom also has a hard time teaching things in class. He talks about nothing in class most of the time. Will simply ramble about what he's done in his life. His tests will catch wou off guard since he covers NOTHING that the tests are on in class. You have to read which sucks. So again an interesting teacher but by no means a very good teacher.

If you can take another Comm 111 professor, DO IT!!!
We only had like 500 pioints in his class. His grading system is not very accurate. He expects you to be a professional speech giver. He is very oppinionated and can be annoying at times.
Hate this guy!! He is rude and really I can't stand to be in the same room as him anymore or else I will shoot myself!!
The people that hate him are those who put fourth no effort or skip class. I attended every class and put effort into my work and did great (and am male). Good class, interesting topic and speeches and some cool stories from Kevin. Keep it up man!
This guy is a jerk and very disrespectful. Most of the time he has no idea what he is talking about. Find a different professor for Comm-111
Give Backstrom a break. He is a good guy and just wants his students to succeed. Yeah, the class is hard, but we are in college, not everything is supposed to be a walk in the park. Read the book, he just touches on an overview of topics in class. Overall he is a good teacher, put forth the effort and stay on top of the reading and you'll do fine
I think Backstrom is a good guy overall. He does expect alot out of his students but I think its for our own good. You do have t read the book or you will be lost. If you try and put the effort in the class you will do fine. Also if you have questions just ask him he is one of the few that are really willing to help.
I love speech, and the class itself is not overly difficult, but he is completely useless. He goes off onto random topics that have no point, and he argues with students to "make them angry" so they'll get "passionate" about things. I dread going to this class!
I hate public speaking but i love this class. I've learned alot about how to cope with my speech anxiety. Good teacher, Funny, you've got to be an idiot not to understand what he's talking about. Rarely use text book, short speeches, Highly recommend him
I didnt pass a one of the exams but thats most likly my fault. Read and your fine bring something to do in class its kind of boring! As for the professor, hes alright. He has some interesting stories and is over all an interesting guy
I didnt pass a one of the exams but thats most likly my fault. Read and your fine bring something to do in class its kind of boring! As for the professor, hes alright. He has some interesting stories and is over all an interesting guy
He is horrible, do not take him! He doesnt teach anything in class, but expects you to know everything. His tests are hard and you wont pass them especially the final and if you mess up on one test dont expect to get a high grade..TAKE SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE!
Meh, class wasnt very helpful, he talked about random stuff that had no relevence on the test and you had to be there. Everyone complains his tests are hard, but he takes the DIRECTLY out of the book, so just read. Hes got alot of stories...not sure how many of em are true. He likes intelligent discussions, regardless of relevence.
um okay. interesting teacher, conversations were irrelevant, but nonetheless interesting. however, if you care about your gpa dont take him. READ, READ, READ OH AND READ AGAIN!!!!the exams and quizzes are directly out of the book but worded very awkward. for the sake of your grades take a different prof.
So this guy is pretty controversial. Really isn't that bad of a guy. If you want to hear some good stories or have some good discussions about the industry, go to class. As far as his exams, it's all from the textbook. Get on his good side by participating in class and e-mailing him interesting news articles. Only teacher for 201, so pass it!
Avoid him. Not a good teacher at all. Favors girls a lot. Doesn't present the information clearly at all.
Awful at teaching an otherwise fascinating subject. I noticed on TitanWeb that a new prof. is teaching 201 next semester, so great for you guys. Favors females, but sexually harasses them. Loves to make horribly ignorant stereotypical comments... definitely avoid!!!
Worst techer ever! point stated!!
Worst professor at UWO? Easily top five . . .
I had a great time in his class. He does tell a lot of stories but they always seem to tie back into the subject. He makes it easier to give speeches in front of people and they are all on easy subjects. Overall great teacher.
don't take if needed. He is a jerk and not at his office hours that much and tests are his way or the high way.
Good Professor but he actually expects you to do some work. You will need to read the text to do good on his exams. In our class he dropped lowest quiz score. Stories sometimes irrelevant but discussions are fun.
I love this guy!! Get to know him and he will respect you. Tells some good stories to pass the time. Great guy!!
Need to read the textbook to do decently on the quizzes. Tough grader on the speeches usually though. If you get to know him, he'll like you better. Favors girls. Tells a lot of random, sometimes boring, stories during lecture.
If you get to know Professor Backstrom he will be more eager to help you. I think he was a fun professor to take and even gave our class a pizza party at the end of the semester!
This class is E-A-S-Y! There are two quizzes and three speeches that are relatively simple. You have to read the text and show up to class otherwise he gets pissed! Kind of a weird man, personality wise but I'm doing well in the class.
SOOO this guy Backstrom - I think that he goes off on tangents a lot! And he'll never say NO to a topic you choose, but he's looking for a certain kind of topic. You MUST read the chapters, they'll be your grade boosters if you actually read them. Class is mandatory, he has a sign in sheet. He's boring. I'm not in good status right now.
I am one of the few that like Backstrom. He does exactly what he says he will. He is a bit of a tough grader, but we only had three speeches all semester. You have to read the book to pass the quizzes Sit in front and talk to him before class and you'll like him a lot more. Doesn't like to lecture and will get off task which is actually fun
This guy is the hardest teacher I've ever had.I'll be fair, he does exactly what he says he's going to do and tells you what chapters you need to know on exams. However he is the hardest grader I've ever met and he definitely plays favorites to the people who sit in front.Stories are entertaining, attendance is a grade.
Backstrom is not an easy man to write an outline for. He is a very tough grader and he uses the text almost to the letter on quizzes and tests. He goes on tangents that help you understand better but he mumbles a lot. This is a class where you have to do a lot of work, no easy time here. Overall, he is helpful if you can stay off his bad side.
rude, aweful. DON'T TAKE
This man has too many of his own unresolved issues to be teaching. He does know his topic, but it's overshadowed by his expectations for what a teacher is supposed to be, not who he is. He needs help to solve his feelings of inadequacy, which are very evident in the way he treats his students. Not Good!!!
I took class during interim and thought the professor was great and cared about his students. Was very nervous about speeches going into the class but he made it easier than I had expected. He got the class involved and made it very interesting. Overall I really liked this professor.
boring class to be in. professor asks a lot of rhetorical questions then gets upset when nobody answers them. definitely favors women. very hard grader for speeches and also has too many guidelines limiting what topics you can use to do speeches. if your looking to breeze through a speech class without any problems, this isn't the teacher you want
Overall great professor that really knows what he is talking about and has had much expieriance in the media industry. No matter what class you have with him you can expect stuff out of the book to be on the exam.
He tells lots of stories that aren't related to the class at all, but he'll try to convince you that they are. He is a funny guy with a lot of knowledge about speech. He isn't as hard as people say he is, but he just pushes you to do your best on everything. READ THE BOOK.
He isn't as hard of a professor as some have said. When I heard stories about him and actually had him in class, I thought they had been talking about a different guy. Very easy class. All you have to do is follow what he says to do! He only wants you to succeed. READ the book and you will be fine!
I thought he was really interesting and funny. He made the class easy and bearable. Perhaps his stories took away from the ability for him to get his message through.
He's a great teacher and a sweet guy! Everyone misunderstands his counter arguments in disc.s, but he's not attacking you!Just trying to show the counter arguments to prepare you better. He's a funny teacher, his disc.s are interesting, what he wants is clear, its not very hard and if you have trouble he's understanding and more than happy to help!
Constantly gets off topic with his pointless stories. He isnt very helpful-sometimes he doesnt even answer his e-mails. I would not sudgest taking this professor. Also, go along with anything he says, because hes definetly not open to interpretation. Hes right, your wrong and thats that.
Be prepared to stand up for what you believe and have a real argument. He LOVES to play devils advocate and will disagree with you on everything. If he is constantly debating you, don't worry that just means he likes you. His stories are funny and the class is interesting. READ THE PAGES HE ASSIGNS, theyll be on the tests. Good guy.
hes okay. tells lots of random stories. always is right and doesn't listen to anyone else. only 3 speeches. READ THE BOOK.
He will tell you pointless personal stories every class and teach you nothing. Then he will get mad if you don't understand it. Read the textbook if you want to learn anything or do well on your speeches and tests. Only 3 speeches which is easy, but he is always depressed. Don't be fooled if he looks like he is sleeping during speeches.
At first I really hated him, but after awhile he really grows on you. In no way is he a terrible teacher, he wants to see you do well! One time a girl completely freaked out during her speech and he nicely took her into the hall, gave her a pep talk and let her start all over. I liked him!
In 111 you have to practice your speeches for your grade, but he's a great professor with lots of interesting stories to offer. Some people cannot stand him, but he is not mean; he just went to college during a time where professors were way more honest then they are now. Only 3 speeches; don't let reviews scare you out of taking his class.
backstrom and i hated eachother for the firt 2 weeks, just as a lot of his other students. I've come around to liking the guy, just practice your speeches and you'll do fine. read the chapters assigned to do well on the exam though!
He gets off topic a lot, but overall he's an awesome teacher!
He will argue with you FOREVER and make everyone take sides on major political/ethical issues. I point blank stood up to him one day and he yelled at me but then apologized the next day in front of the whole class. overall this is an easy and interesting comm 111 but be prepared to stand up for what you believe in.
Read the book!!! Follow the class assignments. Read all assignments and did I say follow class assignments. Class goes by fast he really tries to get you to use critical-thinking skills. Good professor, he will definitely challenge you.
Professor Backstrom works quite well with this course. It is a bit of a tough class but extra credit goes a long way. My public speaking skills are vastly improved because of this course. I'd arguably say he's the best speech teacher at this school. It really comes down to wether or not you prefer the easy way out or an educational experience.
If he didn't require you to go to class I never would of went. You're quiz and exam is based off the book. When it comes to speeches he lets you choose topics but gives you a list of like 1000 things you cant use. So boring in class all he does is talk about useless things. Very hard to be creative when you are limited to what you can talk about.
People say he's a terrible teacher, but in all honesty I thought he was a really cool guy. He likes to challenge you and make you think, and because of this I learned tons. He also loves to play devils advocate so make sure you can back up what you say. He opened up a whole new way of thinking to me, and overall made me a better speaker.
I would have wanted a differ. teacher. He reminds you of that mean high school teacher that tries to put you down. He does have a lost of about 8 pages (in grows) of topics you can not write about for speeches. if you do you cant get higher than a c. He calls himself an easy grader but i didnt have anyone else so i would say on speeches, yes.
Has long since lost the joy/passion of teaching. Very cynical. As he put it, he's heard every topic for a speech, so you won't surprise him with anything but cutting-edge information. Complained approximately 75% of the time in class instead of teaching; went on various rants about the industry and people in general. Avoid.
He is easily my least favorite professor I have ever had. He is monotone, grumpy, and forces his opinions on topics such as politics way too much. He tells pointless stories and doesn't offer much help if you are confused. He does not make you feel comfortable to speak up in discussions because he frequently shuts students ideas/opinions down.
At the beginning of the semester I wasn't too fond of him, he came off grumpy. He is actually a really nice guy. If you talk to him in person one-on-one he makes you feel like he understands and wants to do what he can to help you. His class is demanding and challenging but it is doable.
I'm graduating in August. He made me work harder than ANY of my Economics profs. If you are prepared to work hard, you'll get a lot out of this class. He IS always ready to help if he can see that you care and want to improve.
The first few weeks of class he will come off as grumpy and strict, but he just wants you to know that he means business. His class requires you to put in a lot time and effort. Even after all that effort, you may not get the grade you wanted but you will know the course material very well. Overall he's a quality professor and I would recommend him
Stay away!
Would not recommend him! He is rude and spends the whole class period talking about his personal experiences.
Backstrom has high expections, but what else would you expect at a college level? He does have a list of topics students can't write about, but it's for the student's benefit, not a method of torture. If you want an easy A, choose a different professor because Backstrom will make you work for your grade.
I'm glad I had Backstrom. He makes you work your butt off, and he can be grumpy, but he doesn't waste class time with BS. Both my roommates had other instructors who were very popular AND SO EASY! they also wasted time with lame and chilildish class exercises. If you want to be treated like a child, don't take Backstrom.
Honestly he's one of the best teachers I've had so far. He makes you think a bit more in depth and critically and it sticks with you. He can get off topic easily, but it all ties back in with that days lesson. Some people think he's grumpy but it's just the way he comes off- if you ask for help he will always stick around to answer questions.
So a lot of people hate on Backstrom and I am totally there with you, but he is actually a big stickler for a reason. I remember when I was trying to pick a speech topic and he downed every idea I had. In the end though, he was tough for a reason. I then had to get super creative and my result was a great speech.
Would not recommend taking him. He can be rude and a little too blunt. In class you don't talk about anything relative so it is a waste of time. You'll have to give speeches but he makes you memorize them, yes even if it's a 10 minute speech. Tough grader. Makes it seem like he'll prepare you for speeches but doesn't help what so ever
You need to work for your grade but it is easy to earn a B or higher. Just show up to class and you will be fine.
At first he may come off as disrespecting, but as you get to know him, you'll realize that he isn't that bad. He's there to make you pass and be confident in the real world. He's pretty funny sometimes. Likes to talk about his life a lot at PENN state university.
He is very arrogant and rude. He will meet with you but very unhelpful and gives weird assignments that are not thought out. I am a Junior and he is the worst teacher I have ever had.
Nice enough guy, but he definitely thinks he is smarter than he is. involves too much personal opinion in the material. He uses lots of personal narratives used as examples or evidence which sounds nice. but normally you understood his point or the material before the long winded explanation.
