Great professor. 4 tests, 1 final, 6 quizzes, and a lot of hmwk. Lowest test and quiz score dropped. Class is very difficult, but he is an excellent professor and does his absolute best for total class success. Balas is a very approachable guy, if you need anything he's there. Homework is due every Monday. Review tests are similar to actual test.
Takes a extremely long time to grade each exam.
He does not grade with a curve if you missed passing the class by a few points he will not bump it to pass, no matter how hard you work in the semester. Test and final counts a lot. And he goes very quick in class . Do not recommend for students who have a hard time with math.
Professor Balas is an amazing professor! Yeah, his class is hard, but if you really put in the work, he rewards you. Approx. 6 exams, a few quizzes, a lot of hw, and one cumulative final. Tons of extra credit is given, and he's always available for questions! Great guy
Professor Balas is a great professor if math comes easy to you, if you struggle with math, steer clear of him! He moves quickly but he does print out notes. He gives out a lot of extra credit, all homework and quizzes are online and you get as many tries as you need. Tests are extremely hard.
If you work and study hard you will do great. He wants you to succeed and gives many extra credit opportunities.
If you're looking for a Professor who is considerate of your hard work and dedication to math, I highly suggest you find another teacher. Reason why? 1. Tough grade- you miss one test question, you lose 10 points 2. Very lazy to provide proper material to class 3. Does not give a study guide for final. Just says to study ALL 12 chapter of work
Kevin is awesome! Truly cares about his students' success and is always willing to help and explain things. He gives the previous semesters tests out as a study guide before every test (including the final) which was extremely helpful. He's also a very laid back and chill dude. Highly recommend.
Balas wants his students to succeed and offers a lot of extra credit. Homework is online and he prints out helpful notes for the class. I would definitely recommend!
Kevin Balas is a phenominal math professor! Kevin is extremely understanding and is a very generous grader. I highly recommend doing all the homework and at least attempting to solve questions you do not know, to earn points still. Kevin can have a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor, but don't take it too seriously. He's a great guy!
kevin balas if you're reading this, please upload grades already. i'm so stressed. anyways, statistics is a hard topic to UNDERSTAND. that said kevin is a really cool professor/person. if you ask him for help, he's there for you man. do your homework and ask him questions because if not, you won't do well on his tests. if you're lazy, DO NOT TAKE!
Kevin is fair and gives you several opportunities to pass his class. He is lenient and forgiving but it is definitely not an easy class. The tests are tough but as long as you go over the study guides, you will pass. His lectures are lazily done and he gives you a hard time when you ask questions. Overall, he's reasonable but he's not the best.
Don't take honors stats with him if you don't get the hang of math easily. He's a great guy, but he's just not the best at explaining math in simple terms. You have to stay on top of this class & can't procrastinate, do all the homework (37) and quizzes (11), plus 4 exams and a cumulative final. If you show that you care, he will help you out.
lots of hw online- do them! attend all classes. missing one class will put you at a disadvantage. the dude is funny and if you do the hw and study the practice tests, you should do fine in the class. lets class leave early most times which is nice.
Not only the best math teacher I've ever had but the best teacher overall! If you show up to class and have a basic understanding of algebra you will pass. If you do not understand something he will go back and explain it and answers any question in great detail. The book is not required and homework doesn't count. 10/10 would take again.
Great teacher! Despite my classes real lack of enthusiasm, he constantly tries to lighten the mood to make math fun. He is very helpful and if you need help he is always there. Questions are encouraged and he will go over a topic as many times as needed. Do the classwork, online hw(can be a lot), do the study guides and you will pass.
Professor Balas is a great person, and an alright teacher. To succeed in this class, you need to attend all lectures, stay on top of online homework and study hard for tests. He is a tough grader, and there are 4 exams with 1 final, and 11 online quizzes. However, if you go to his office hours and show that you care he will help you a lot!
I had been scared stats before taking class, but it wasn't bad at all. His lectures may go fast, but he's always ready to answer your question. If you skip a class, you would be lost. He's always open to help his students. As long as you participate, he's there.
Great professor. Took him for stats. If you pay attention in class and learn to use the calculator youll get an A. Answers all questions and if you dont know how to use the calculator for some problems ask him and hell show you.
If you give a good effort in his class you will do fine. He assigns homework questions, DO THEM! They are the exact questions he puts on the test.
Very accessible & personable. Quests instead of quizzes are open book/note/partner Free points. Gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. One test question was really hard? You get to try it again open partner/note for extra credit. 4 tests & 1 final are the real deciders on your grade but you get test corrects and a dropped test.
He is a good professor. Homeworks are not required, but if you have time, should do this because all the quizzes are exactly the questions in the homework. Also, he's open to helping his students.
His sample tests are nothing like the exam. He is a nice guy if he likes you and youre good at math. half the class failed and the other half got A's. He will not bump up your grade to help you out.
Has a very easy going attitude, knows how students think and learn. Assigns alot of non-mandatory Homework, do them, its essential if you want an A. Gives alot of quizzes but lets you do them in groups. Tests are a little hard but doable if you put effort. Wasnt too keen of him in the beginning but he grew on me as the semester progressed.
Kevin is a great professor. He really wants us all to pass and not retake the course. He always asks if we have questions and will help anytime. Pretty straightforward testing as well. I highly recommend him, he makes math less scary.
Kevin is really chill, and genuinely wants everyone to do well. Homework is essential to doing well on the exams, more so than attending class. His exams are not meant to be too difficult, however they are a bit proof-y. Luckily he has bonus questions that can really help for each example. Also he is a good resource during office hours
Kevin's a great teacher. He's a nice guy and gives lots of class quizzes to get a good grade in his class. His tests are tough but they are fair and he gives a bonus every test for extra credit. His lectures are good, but not the best, so showing up, paying attention and doing the HW is mandatory. A typical "gotta work a decent bit for that A" class
Balas is cool! You print his notes before every class, which helps because trig has alot of pictures. The pace of this class was really relaxed. Weekly "quests" that are 2-3 question quizzes that you do in groups with notes and he helps. That's a major grade boost. HW was optional but you should do. Extra credit on tests, but tests are tough.
Great lecturer and a better person. If only all professors were Kevin Balas... His grading is generous, but final grades do reflect competency, so don't go into this class thinking it's gonna be a zero-effort A. I tend to zone out in lectures and learn just through reading, but KB is an above-average lecturer and very good at answering questions.
One important trait a teacher should have is understanding the student's circumstances. This teacher lacks that! I worked hard as much as the hardship of life left me time to, but he gave me an F. I'm an older student and my major is English. But given his young age not understanding my circumstances was kind of expected. No grudges against Kevin.
Took him for a summer class. It was a lot of information to process but he made sure we understood everything and he brought in a tutor during class. He tries to give as much credit when grading tests and is willing to help you succeed. Will definitely try to take him again for another math course!
My class met once a week and the rest was online. During class he doesnt teach & multiple chapters we had to teach ourselves. With the recent fires going on & tragedies, we had to miss 2 weeks of class, when we got back he gave us an exam then final. He only favoritizes students who are good at math, if you arent he makes you feel dumb.
Go on the chapter reviews on the textbook he'll always take test questions from there. If I never took calc before this class I would've done worse
I registered for this class, we only meet once every weekend. The Professor is good but the class is do-it- yourself and you only meet him once. My advice is read the syllabus thoroughly. Use all tools for success. Go to individual school's tutor lab, use confer zoom and meet professor online. Put in the work, you will get your A.
Professor Balas is a really down to earth guy. He is really likeable and he allows you to do test corrections, offers extra credit, and drops your worst test score. For someone who is not great at math he really helped me out to get a decent grade. This class was difficult because we only met once a week. But, he really helped raise my grade.
You need to work hard in order to get an A in the class. Going to class really benefits you. Kevin helps students even without asking him directly. He is involved. Tests are difficult, but there is extra credit on it. I recommend going to office hours if you do not understand the material. Class was enjoyable. Would take him again.
He's a great teacher, explains concepts well. But the class moves very fast. Lots of tests. CUMULATIVE final
Kevin is seriously a cool dude and he wants everyone to do well! That being said, it felt like the lectures went by too fast for me. He picks hard questions from the book for the tests. Homework isn't required but highly recommended. Extra credit problems on every test, as well as one test correction, and he replaces lowest test score w/ the final.
I wouldn't recommend taking any class from this professor. He uploads the study guides last minute, so you're better off studying the chapter reviews, and when he does upload the guides, they're nothing like the tests. Get ready to practically teach yourself or spend all your time in the math lab.
Good professor, that teaches concepts well, and has a good structure to the class. Online HW is helpful and has no rush deadlines. He also posts study guides for the tests that basically tell you what to expect on the actual test. Over all great professor, would recommend.
If you want to learn Statistics as well as needing the credits choose a different professor than him. He gives out the study guide last minute before the exam. He also assumes that stats is an easy subject to master, but its difficult for some. Don't take any math courses from him, you'll be better off teaching yourself.
He is funny & engaging but can come off as a bit rude & sarcastic. I wouldn't necessarily say he is approachable b/c he can be condescending. If you're bad at math either do not take him or get a tutor. The upside is there is a lot of easy points to gain. I am sure if I was good at math I would've enjoyed it more. Tests are very hard.
Best Math Teacher I've ever had. Clearly describes concepts and is happy to break things down when needed. He's very approachable, a fair grader and wants to see you succeed. Just a good guy in general. Regardless this is a math class , If you don't apply yourself you won't pass. Do the homework, focus in class and be consistent and you'll do fine
My favorite math class I have ever taken. He allows you to use this program called stat crunch and if you can get familiar with that, you will have no problem passing this class. I spent all my time learning stat crunch and ended with a 98%!
test are super difficult. He expects his students to understand immediately and then take the test the day after. He is very sarcastic and at times rude. I wouldn't recommend.
This guy sets you up to fail. Not only is he rude but he treats students like they are all math majors and should know everything and if you dont he will make you feel stupid. I emailed him once for advise for extra help and he never replied. Guy should find a new profession because he surely ended up in the wrong one. A wall can teach better.
Not the best Professor Ive had. Unless you are a mathematician, I would not recommend taking this guy. Tests are very difficult, usually only 10 -12 questions. Very sarcastic and very rude to students. Will make you feel stupid if you ask a question. I only passed because I had a private tutor and did homework.
Kevin teaches to make you really learn the subject- so you will have to study. That being said hes hilarious has awesome shirts, and is a fair grader.
Kevin is a great guy and a great professor. He's an incredibly chill person and is a lot of fun to be in a classroom with. He really, really, REALLY cares about the students in his classes and their ability to succeed. Yes, this class is a lot of work and effort, but if he knows you're putting in that work and effort, he'll be kind towards you.
People who did poorly in this class most likely did not put the time in themselves. In order to do well, you have to be prepared to study. He is an amazing teacher and overall a great guy who cares about his students. I liked him so much I took him again for precalc. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to pass the class the first try.
Nice dude, rough class. I guess it might just be the material but this was really hard. He isn't very understanding. He likes to make people feel dumb when they ask questions. He also moves super fast but he lets people ask questions whenever. He's cool but when it comes to math he's not the best teacher.
He was nice as a person, but as a professor, he was not that nice after all. If you are not that confident in math then, taking him he will definitely make you feel really stupid if you did not understand something from your previous math classes and even struggling with the material in class. There's lots of notes to print out. Tests are difficult
The fact that this class sucked was 75% because m07 is just fricken hard. But Balas is a terrible teacher in my opinion. He let's you use notes on the quizzes which really helps but then again.. so does Vahe K. so... i'd never take balas again. I'd give him like a 4/10. Really, really bad at answering questions in a way that I could understand it.
I couldn't follow on any of his presentations. When people wouldn't understand he would get frustrated and annoyed at people asking stupid questions and saying that they should already have known that. He is a lot of hard work. He doesn't give out mandatory homework but it's really hard to pass the class if you don't do his suggested hw.
Kevin is awesome! I took two M03 class with very poor professors who depended much on online systems than actually teaching the material. I don't get why he has bad reviews, If you don't show up, you won't pass. Homework is not mandatory but do the hw if you don't understand what's going on. I took him for 3 math classes and would recommend!
In PreCalc/Trig and everyone is currently failing or has a D. Has not changed any of his standard to accommodate the crisis we are in. He does not care about anything. Worst professor, please do not take him. He expects you to just know everything and goes super fast. He's super rude and has an attitude. Just praying I pass with a C.
Professor Balas is a great guy who really cares about his students. He shows up with a good attitude and a hilarious shirt. He has this "no worries" vibe that I found made learning the material much easier. Yeah M07 is super hard but if you have a good professor it's OK. Bad reviews probably come from people who didn't attend class until test day.
Yeah, I understand that precalculus is hard but it should be the professor who makes it easier to understand. Balas was fun and hilarious at times but he really got annoyed when you would ask him questions and sometimes yell. When we had to switch to online, he didn't change anything. If you plan on taking Precalculus, don't choose Balas!
Don't believe him when he says he'll drop your lowest test or "replace it with the final". He just puts the lowest test grade and the grade on the final to the same score. So pointless.
I honestly thought Kevin wasn't too bad of a teacher. Yes, precalculus is a class with some decently hard material. As long as you do the recommended homework you will be prepared for the tests. He can be incredibly rude and sarcastic at times but you just kind of have to ignore it. The horrible reviews are from kids who don't stay for the lecture.
I have never rated a professor before. This professor is so awful that I had to make an account to rate him. I don't want anyone else to go through what I am going through. He is so rude and loves to make you feel stupid. I have been trying so hard but he just shuts me down and gives me a snarky comment. Don't make the same mistake. DON'T TAKE HIM
Balas schedules tests on weekends & only gives 24 hrs to complete. Balas has zero tolerance for late submissions. Dont expect any leniency: even if youre a single mother or work full-time. Hes condescending in his responses & enjoys being a professor for the authority rather than actually teaching. Our software has made for a better professor!
Lived in the math center. I knew all the tutors, and at one point I had 5 tutors trying to help me with a CW, couldn't figure it out. I emailed to let him know and ask if he could give me an extra day so he can help me and he said 'that's your problem figure it out.' Rude, Sarcastic and makes u feel stupid. Downgrades you. Don't take him, please.
Hes falsely accused multiple students of cheating. Dont risk having to fight for your grades, take another class!
Horrible teacher. Hell look for opportunities to target your grade if you get on his bad-side. His lectures are impossible to hear/following along, so youll get by if you rely on your book. Very test heavy class and if you dont show enough work youll be given a zero, even for the simplest of steps. Do yourself a favor a take another professor!
Dont even bother with his confusing lectures, their impossible to hear. Hes also an inconsistent grader, so dont be surprised when he adjusts what work he accepts mid-course.
I loved Professor Balas! His lectures are fast but he encourages working in groups and is super engaged with his students. He is definitely the best math teacher that I've had. He was always helpful and open to questions. His humor is sarcastic and blunt but it makes the lectures and classwork more fun. Just do the homework and you'll be fine.
I am TERRIBLE at math and professor Balas made Stats so digestible. Receiving an A in this class felt so good but you really have to work for it. The great thing was being able to do the online homework as many times needed until I got 100% which really made the concepts make more sense to me.
Gives great partial credit and is a nice guy. However class is very test heavy and homework is optional, but he gives good credit for classwork that helps. Good at teaching but calculus is a tough subject, so if you're not talented you will need to do a lot of self learning and practice.
Just took this class online. The class is based off of homework and quizzes for each chapter. Also lets you use a program called stat crunch that pretty much does the calculations for you. Makes the course 100x easier. But, you will spend a lot of time with the class because its not a walk in the park. Tests are taken on Saturdays.
Show that you care about your grade, go to tutoring, watch the lectures, study the study guide and quizzes which are exactly like the exam, proctored exams only open on Sundays, overall I had a good experience with this professor. He made the work easy to understand. I got over 100%.
Balas is one of the best teachers I've had. If you need help, just ask. He responds to emails within 3-4 hours and often faster. He's very layed back and has group quizes once a week. If you miss a class, go to his office hours, he will explain the gist to you. He has helped me with other classes I've had after his.
Professor Balas quizzes can be done in a group, but the quiz is harder and oftentimes requires you to have prior knowledge of the subjects in order to complete it. His class is fast paced and personally his explanations don't help me grasp the material. Mainly had to go on youtube but the test material would be harder and confusing.
Professor Balas gave me my first and only C at Moorpark. I emailed him 3 times about a poor test score he didn't grade and slapped a score on, he didn't even have the courtesy to respond. Terrible communication and does not care about his students at all. Probably the worst experience I've had with a math professor; barely teaches.
Never rated a professor before until taking him, absolute garbage of a teacher. Had to drop his class because I was failing and Ive been pretty good at math math my entire life. Lectures made me want to fall asleep, super monotone and sounds like he hates his job. Ice cold and uninterested.
Never graded a teacher before this, class is terrible, all of the work is done on this Pearson online program and constantly says "use technology" to complete a question, problem is that the course is like 20 years old, that "technology" its talking about, doesn't exist anymore. And the provide "Statcrunch" is missing alot of needed calculations.
The course relies on statcrunch, but there was SO much work, and stats is very time consuming. He did have a final project.I had a previous class with him before the pandemic, and he is a very sarcastic person, which does come through in his emails. Overall, I would probably take another calls with him if he was my only option.
Only passed b/c I taught myself & paid for Chegg. Missed the first test due to a family member passing, & the date wasn't even posted until a day before (unlike he claimed in the syllabus). I emailed him explaining & all I got was a "sorry". His class was awful from inconsistencies in due dates, lectures.. He does not care at all. Seriously Avoid.
Professor Balas is literally the chillest guy. Just do all of your work and show that you care and he'll go out of his way to help you. It is a math class though, so it does require a fair amount of work but if you're gonna take a math, take it with this guy, trust me.
save yourself and avoid him at all costs. He teaches with a "flipped class" where you have to watch lectures at home from his youtube and then go over homework in class. Except he doesn't go over homework, only assigns classwork, and you'll be watching videos from 2019. He is horrible and does not explain things well at all. 4 weeks in & miserable.
Calculus is quite difficult, and his lectures are a little boring. BUT he will help you if you reach out and won't make you feel inferior for asking questions. Exams don't have any curveballs or anything either, so review all the homework and you'll be okay. I would also recommend taking the algebra review sessions that MP holds.
Prof Balas is super cool and will go above and beyond to help you learn if you are struggling. Math was not the easiest subject for me but he was attentive and able to help me succeed in office hours. Stats is based off mystatlab/statcrunch so its easier than doing it on excel or memorizing the formulas. You can replace a test with your final grade
Took his class last year. Good professor and a nice guy. Really rushes through his lectures, so it might be difficult to keep up. Didn't give us a study guide for the final, but there was a review session.
Best math experience ever. The only HW is watching the prerecorded 30ish min lectures before class and then class time is spent solving problems, instead of vice-versa which was really helpful. One quiz a week, basically completion grade. Exams: never hard q's, they're always what you'd expect. One 10pt bonus q per exam and final which really helps.
One of best math professors I've taken. took him for Calculus 1 and 2. The class is flipped where you watch lecture videos before class and do practice problems in class. He's an extremely fair grader. Each exam had a bonus problem worth 10 extra credit points. He is very approachable it is clear that he wants his students to succeed.
It is Precalc and Trig, so of course it will be difficult if you haven't been exposed to trigonometry. Textbook was an online PDF, online lectures before class and basic review and quizzes in class. This course is worth 6 credits which is the highest credited course for math in the school and has a lot of material, so of course it will be difficult
I took this class online, the lectures were good and you had unlimited tries on your homework so you could work out what you got wrong and go back to the lecture. It's really easy to fall behind lost of homework and quizzes. If you are not very good at math like me it can get frustrating but if you can keep up you can definitely pass.
Give you old videos that haven't been updated in years and when you get to class he will give you multiple worksheets and expect all the work to be done with no help. Don't get me wrong he's a nice guy but the class just isn't the best to get help from him.
Kevin is such a respectful, helpful, and chill dude. I took his class as a hybrid and you would do work on your own in class and at home but he was always available if you needed help and gave such good explanations and examples, especially on in-class days. Classwork was on paper but everything else, including exams, was online. Has fill-in notes
Professor Balas is a great professor. There were about 30 minute long lectures to watch before class, and then do problems in class. He comes around the room to ensure everyone understands, and would be available to help. All tests had extra credit and difficulty was decent for calc. Watch the lectures and come to class and you will succeed.
Took this during the summer as a 4 week course. It was somewhat intense due to the amount of homework assigned but overall it was easy. He gives great feedback in all classwork assignments so you can improve and also answers emails fairly quickly. I would definitely take another class with him again!
Professor Balas did a great job at keeping concepts simple and was clear with what he wanted you to know and what wouldn't be necessary for his course. My section was completely remote and utilized Pearson, but Balas made sure to include tech videos and examples to help with the homework and exams which are pretty identical.
Do not take this class if your precalc foundation is weak. I was completely lost when watching lectures, but that's expected from a calculus class. However, do not take this class if you do not like a flipped structure (watching lectures online, doing classwork in person). If you try to learn in class, you'll be lost for the whole 3 hours.
If you don't like teaching everything by yourself don't take this professor. It is a "flipped" class, you watch his videos at home and then do classwork in class. Videos for precalc are long and VERY confusing, sometime Kevin is trying to explain but makes it even more confusing. He's kind cool dude but not the best teacher.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Balas provides everything you need to be successful without the need for the textbook. He cares about the success of his students and provides opportunities to re-test and offers an extra credit assignment.
I took this as a flipped class so lectures were recorded and we did work in class. He really tries to help, but sometimes math is hard. You purchase the textbook (pearson), but its all online equations/work. Tests are online and he allows retakes if you do bad. Theres extra credit and he drops scores if needed. just do your work
NOT AN EASY CLASS!!! I understand you guys are glad you passed but DO NOT give a professor good ratings when you know you were so stressed and crying your eyes out because you cant understand a damn thing! I signed up for this class because of the good rating. M15 is a really hard class, a lot of homework, poor communication
I passed with a C which lowered my GPA. I don't have anything to say other than good luck
His class is a flipped class and his lecture videos are not very useful and boring and you will end up teaching yourself the whole course, In class he just hands out a packet then does nothing. His study guide for the test is useless they aren't representative of what will be on the test. The only positive of this class is you can retake tests 1-3
He teaches a flipped course so theres almost no instruction irl. Imo tho I liked it better since you could replay parts you missed. The material itself was pretty difficult and you're expected to know some trig going in (I had to watch Org Chem Tutor vids for unit circle). Watch the videos, take notes, and don't cheat on the classwork and ur golden
Only take this class if you're good at teaching yourself the material. I would spend hours weekly watching math videos trying to understand how to do calculations. Take notes and use them on your test. DO THE HOMEWORK! Hw and test are literally the same questions. Makes you buy the textbook online; $150. Tests and quizzes r online. Helps in class.
Prof is willing to help students who ask. Recorded lectures to watch on ur own time & u should ask any clarifying q's irl. 3 tests w/ retakes (harder than og) avail. Drops lowest test score w/ the final's grade if it helps. Studying via study guide has varying results (studying cw >) If u dont leave class early, do notes, & ask q's u will get an A.
One of the best professors I've had. Extremely caring about students and them passing, he has a good understanding that this is the first time students have dealt with statistics and explains problems very well. He's willing to go over problems with students in class and is very reachable online and in person.
This guy actually made me enjoy math, and I felt no professor had done that before. His work is easy and not that hard. Just stay on it and you'll be good. He also helped me understand the material. Overall a great professor
Im taking the 8 week statistics class and its fairly easy. Its practical math. Theres like 3 homeworks a week, and one classwork. Theres a quiz for each module but its due a few weeks after the module is done. You have to buy the pearson thing which is somewhere around 100 dollars, but you need that for any math class. Overall very good professor.
At times, he was confusing but for the most part, wasn't a horrible teacher. Towards the end of the semester, I found it easier to just search up the videos on youtube, and that taught me what I needed to know. The grading system was extremely lenient, and I wouldnt have gotten an A if it wasnt for the 4 scale grade point system he had.
Take this class. You are allowed to use statcrunch which is a lifesaver for stats (its like excel you just plug in the data and it solves it all) lots of homework but it helps you build a strong grade in the class. Tests are out of 110 points but he puts whatever you get out of 100 on canvas so your grade gets boosted. Literally had a 102 all year.
$100 to access the website to do the work and take the tests. If taken stats before its a recap. Lectures aren't that great, very short, and he talks slowly. Videos do go over examples, and the textbook can help as well. If Stats is new for you, 8 weeks might be too much. It goes by fast, but you do a lot of work.
