Dr. Barry is fantastic. He is passionate and very knowledgable in his subject and wants to help students understand. He makes himself very available to meet and answer any questions you may have. He makes the expectations very clear at the beginning of the semester and doesn't stray from the syllabus. He makes class fun with memes & science humor.
he is really funny but his lectures are very hard to comprehend
Dr. Barry is a very good professor. He adds a theme song for every class and supplements his lectures with memes and other jokes that make the material memorable.
To me lectures were boring. If you aren't confident in your biology skills I recommend taking 110. This class was particularly difficult because I had never had biology in high school. He wasn't helpful when I needed it. He tries to make class interesting by playing songs with "biology related titles" at the start of class but it didn't work for me
I am not very interested in bio and he didn't help. he definitely knew what he was talking about but was very dry in presentation which made it difficult for me to go to class. If you have any question tho, he will gladly help you and make it clear. if our grade solely depended on tests, I would not have passed. weekly online quizzes saved me
It was obvious that he knew what he was talking about in lecture, but he isn't very good at getting it to make sense to others. He spent more time trying to make jokes than he did actually teaching. If you read the textbook religiously, you'll do just fine. He was very helpful if you went to office hours.
Dr. Barry knows what he's talking about, but he's just not good at getting it across in a way for us students to understand, as well as he tended to be a bit monotone at times, making it difficult to pay attention. I did horrible on every exam he gave and all of the online assignments and lab were the only things that got me through.
Dr. Barry clearly knows what he's talking about and teaches it pretty well, as a professor he's not bad. The EXAMS are another story. I am a diligent student but no amount of studying helps on these exams. I feel like I have learned the material he teaches completely but it does't even matter. I go to his office regularly too and it doesn't help.
Dr. Barry is great. Yes it's hard, but what do you expect? He wants to get us prepared for the future Biology courses as they will be no walk in the park. If you listen to him in lecture and study the material outside of class instead of partying and being lazy you'll do well. If you wanna be lazy well... You won't do well. Good guy. Very helpful.
Dr. Barry is a very smart man, however no matter how hard you study for exams go to review sessions etc. it is still insanely hard to do well on his exams which are worth a lot of your final grade. Not even being a bio major this course has been the biggest source of stress for me and Dr. Barry can also be very smug which makes it more frustrating
Dr. Barry seems to be a very divisive professor. I have now taken him for 115 and 117. Some days, lectures are very boring, but others are easier to get through. i greatly appreciated his humor. He is always willing to answer questions. A warning, a class avg for a test in 117 was a 49. Thankfully, he gave extra credit to make up for it.
I took Barry for 115 and 117 and got an A in both lectures. He's entertaining in an eccentric sort of way and can make key concepts memorable. To be honest, I browsed Reddit the whole time and just went through the PowerPoints the night before exams and did well. If you have an inclination for biology and science in general, you should do well.
Class taken during the summer. Very well paced and Dr. Barry kept the class alive. Textbook was useless , all your information is available in downloadable lectures. Some material is sort of bland but not difficult. Note taking isn't really required, just read the lectures and you'll do well.
He was an amazing teacher. He was very helpful and readily available. His lectures were well explained and he likes to add jokes. His PowerPoints explain most everything you need to know, but attending class is necessary for participation point and to understand anything he may not put in the Powerpoints.
He was an amazing professor! Take all his classes! Everything was clear and easy to understand. He loves plants.
Took Barry for Bio115 my freshman year, and got an A. Took book back cause he said he wouldnt test us on anything that wasn't on the ppts which was true. Weekly quizzes and biweekly exams online like every bio 115 class. (so easy) Only had 2 exams and 1 final. Gives attendance points. Puts memes and jokes in his ppts making it more entertaining. :)
Barry is a great teacher and he always makes you laugh. As long as you do well on all the quizzes and ecampus exams, you're sure to get at least a B. Very helpful and clarifies everything.
Professor Barry is a great teacher. His lectures are clear, they can get boring though so make sure to pay attention. He is always encouraging you to seek help at his office hours or tutoring sessions. The tests can be hard so study a few days before the test. Power points are the best study sources. Attendance is important for your grade
Great guy, the lectures are clear cut, he teaches you what you need to know
For someone who took AP Biology in high school and succeeded, this class is a great refresher. Barry goes into just enough detail on complex processes so that you understand but are not overwhelmed. He loves to crack a good joke or two during his lectures. He asks challenging questions in class to make sure everyone truly understands whats going on
Professor Barry is overall a great professor and person. He is very straightforward and clear cut in lecture, and loves to answer questions. The only thing is his tests, they seem easy but they often worded weirdly and tricky. Study hard and make sure you REALLY know what the question is asking.
Dr. Barry is a great teacher who is passionate about biology. His lectures sometimes fail to keep my attention but his sense of humor will often refocus me. Weekly quiz and biweekly online exam (both of which are not super difficult). He gives out attendance points nearly every lecture so those are definitely a grade-booster.
He is very knowledgeable in his field. He relates the class to real life and often stops to tell you little interesting things about nature. He is part of the reason I changed my major to Biology. He makes it so interesting. I could listen to him all day. He should narrate Nature instead of teaching Biology.
Dr. Barry is very smart but he is very monotoned and doesn't present the information in a way that makes sense to college students. Tests are incredibly hard no matter how much you study. All powerpoints are online. Funny, smart guy but there's no chance I'd take his class again.
Great professor
Very monotone boring lectures. 2nd test is bs.
Extremely hard tests, you'll have to start studying probably a week in advance. He gives you all the lectures but most of the time you'll have to look deeper into the information on your own. You can't miss more than 3 classes without losing points. Participation points are crucial because they're easy points to fall back on if you test poorly.
Very boring lecturer, but he does a good job of providing study materials and lecture slides to you. If you are continuing in biology past 115-117 take someone else.
Great professor overall. He lectures for the whole class period and their are weekly quizzes. Make sure to study for the in class exams because they can be difficult.
The class is generally laid back and he just goes through the powerpoint slides without giving much detail. The exams are nearly impossible no matter how much you study.
Dr. Barry is a good professor. Some think he is monotone and unspecific but I think he does an okay job. He gives you a lot of opportunities to get points else where rather than just tests. It is easy to keep a high B or low A in his class. Must show up to get participation clicker points, they are really heavy, but if you show up those points help
Dr. Barry is a tough professor. It is relatively easy to pass his class but if your aiming for an A it is near impossible. His exams are difficult but as long as you get As on the ecampus exams and quizzes you should pass. He flies through his lecture notes without giving details. Clicker attendance is taken for points in his classes as well.
I had Barry for Bio 115 and 117. I got A's in both. You just have to listen and pay attention. For exams, making chapter outlines is the way to study. A few of his exam questions are tricky, but it's definitely not impossible to pass with a A or B. I actually TA for him now. He's slightly monotone, but the jokes he makes are great. Just listen.
Some say "monotone" Id agree but I think he is super funny. Smart guy and he definitely knows what he is talking about. His class is super hard, Im not doing very well but if science is a strong subject of yours he would be a great professor for you.
Super easy class to pass as long as you read the lecture slides. If it wasn't for clicker questions I wouldn't have even needed to go to class. Very straight forward guy
Dr. Barry is not a very good professor. He simply reads the lecture slides rather than explaining, and when I went to see him in his office hours he was short and rude to me. No matter how much you study for his exams, they are really tough and nearly impossible to achieve an A on.
Seemed great at first, but not now. Never emails back. Don't ask him for anything or help on anything, he will literally ignore you. Has caused me so much stress!
Dr. Barry tends to go slow during his lectures. For ecology, he offered a lot of extra credit to help boost our grades. His tests are unusual, not difficult material just his style is a little different. Approachable guy but fairly average professor.
Dr. Barry was just okay. Lectures were long and rather boring. A lot of memorizing slides and not much analysis or critical thinking. Dr. Barry tended to make faulty questions when writing exams which frustrated a lot of students. Could of been an interesting and exciting course but it just fell flat.
His lecture is OK, give extra credit opportunities after every exam. Very easy to talk to via E-mail. Exam average are in 70s. 1/3 of the class got A. Second exam is the hardest. Make sure you memorize EVERYTHING on his ppt slides.
Prof. Barry was awesome. He wants you to pass and gives you credit with the clickers, quizzes and several exams. Take notes during lectures bc he tends to include in exams. The final exam was super hard because it was the only one with standardized questions. Read the entire chapter corresponding to each lecture, only way to understand topics!
Boring class but fairly easy. Come to class and answer the clicker questions, other than that you don't really need to pay attention. Test questions are right off the PowerPoint slides so study those and you'll do fine.
Dr. Barry is a decent professor. His lectures tend to be on the more boring side but he knows his material very well. There are plenty of extra credit points and as long as you read through the power points his gives you and take notes you'll be fine. Tests are not difficult and it's an easy class to get a decent grade in.
I enjoyed Dr. Barry, but he is just too smart for me. Come to class and do the clicker questions and that will help your grade out a lot. There were two extra credit opportunities and maybe two homework assignments. Quizzes every Monday online. Overall, I liked the professor, but the exams were very hard. Also, short answers at the end of exams.
Overall, fairly decent professor. The class is mostly based on lectures, which are quite boring. He likes to drop in some dad jokes which are actually pretty funny. Exams are pretty easy; they are very similar to his weekly quizzes and practice exams. He gave out two extra credit assignments during the semester and gave bonus after an exam.
Dr. Barry's a really smart guy and he knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't really know how to explain things. I still liked his class though, he made jokes, offered extra credit assignments, and gave review sessions. He lectured every class and gave out clicker points. His exams were either hard or very easy, you just have to know it
Barry is great. While he's kind of monotone, he is funny and really knows the subject well. He gives extra credit and participation matters. Easiest way to take notes is on laptop. As long as you study the day before the exam you"'ll be fine. The 2nd exam is the hardest is the final is easy (it's like 1/3 genetics).
Very smart guy. Lectures are jam-packed with info and clicker questions. Tests are pretty difficult, you need to study a good amount. He's very good at explaining the material if you go to class and pay attention.
I found his lectures to be boring, but maybe that's because I'm not a fan of ecology in general. He gave up to 6% extra credit on our final grades, which was generous. The book wasn't needed but his lecture slides had more blanks than actual words, so you miss important info if you skip class. Even if you do show up, it's easy to miss things.
Kevin Barry is a great teacher for Bio 115 and 117. I found his exams mirrored his noted pretty well. He gives you powerpoints and I always wrote down everything he said. His clicker questions are helpful, they usually show up again on the exam.
Dr. Barry is not a bad guy, he's actually pretty funny, but his lectures are very monotonous and he reads right off his slides. I frequently have to watch YouTube videos to better understand the material presented in class. There are MANY clicker questions every class, so you can lose a bunch of participation points from missing one class.
Dr. Barry is a really great guy who is highly approachable. Sometimes he does not know how to explain things in different ways, but the TAs were helpful in rephrasing. His exams were a piece of cake if you review the slides he gives you. He does clicker questions that are a lot like what he will ask of you on the exams. I really enjoyed his class.
Dr. Barry is a generous professor who explains his topics very well, but at the same time is a little lecture heavy. Will continue with a new lecture, even if there is 30 seconds left in class.
Barry is a great professor! He knows the material really well, and is willing to help students out with extra credit. Don't let the clicker questions & notecards scare you - they are super helpful and honestly I studied maybe a total of 4-5 hours to pass with an A.
Barry is one of the most genuine professors. He cares about students and their performance and is so actively willing to help whether that be with office hours, review sessions, extra credit (take full advantage of this), etc... He's incredibly easy to reach out to. His lecture slides are great for studying. Skip class sparingly. Highly recommend!
Overall, Dr. Barry is a cool guy. I never tire of his "dad jokes". His lectures are decently interesting and he posts the slides online. All of his quiz questions come from the lecture notes or clicker questions. The exams weren't too bad if you studied beforehand. He offers a few extra credit opportunities. I am taking him again for 117.
To me, hes one of the best professors!
Cool guy, OK lecture, impossible exam. Never got A on any of the midterm nor final, but end up with a low A. Gave 5% extra credit to your overall grade at the end for doing lots of volunteer work.
Honestly, Barry is the easiest professor for 117. I had him for 115 and he is a chill dude. Test questions are always from the quizzes or lectures. I'm sad I will never have him again :(
Took this class before with another prof. Easy A lecture, failed lab. Regret repeating with him. He includes a lot more info in lectures/exams. Which is great if you're a bio major I guess? I'm not. Unnecessarily hard. Especially since it was an easy class. If you're not a bio major, wouldn't advise his class. Brb taking his quiz, gonna go cry now.
He's been my favorite professor this year. He's so funny with his dad jokes.
He has good jokes and is very funny in lecture. But you have to study alot for the exams.
Barry is one of the few STEM professors that I have had that doesnt base grades purely on exams. He gives online quizzes, homeworks, and participation points that really help keep your grade up which is so helpful. Ive taken two classes with him and both were great.
Kevin Barry is the most majestic man I have ever met. We had lots of outdoor labs as well as indoor discussions. Bio365 was really just about real life experiences and field work. Thought we had exams and papers/hw, Dr. Barry gave great feedback and thought provoking questions during the entire semester. 10/10 would take again. I love him
If you arent paying attention in class, good luck. He will add random sentences to his lecture that will be on the test. He isnt a bad person, just makes her class VERY VERY specific.
Kevin Barry is definitely my favorite professor. He is very understanding and tries to actually help students succeed. His jokes always make the day just a little bit better. You definitely have to pay attention because it is Biology but overall his tests are not super difficult.
made bio pretty easy :-) all we had was recorded lectures, 3 short assignments a week, and then quizzes/pre tests/tests. did not take too long to complete all work each week and he was thorough in explaining everything. never had test questions based on content he did go over. very nice too
Dr. Barry is very laid back but still manages to cover the content you need in order to do well in the class. Participation is not necessarily required as it is not part of the grade, but he does still try to incorporate it in each class. The homework is not overwhelming, as it is generally about three small assignments each week.
The class was just average. I did work nonstop though. You have to expect that everything that he says is on the exam. You're graded by many things and there's extra credit. He had to raise every grade for every exam though, so that says a lot about how he formats his exams. Questions can be abstract.
Very monotone. I feel like hes very hard to build a nice student-teacher relationship. The lecture are long and hard to stay attentive to. If you take good notes and follow with lectures and slides, youll do great. Visual and auditory learners like me will struggle, especially if you need extra enthusiasm from a professor to succeed.
This class isn't the easiest, but Dr. Barry gave extra credit at the end of the semester that really helped me. If you take good notes during lecture you'll be fine. He makes lectures entertaining which I enjoyed.
The only reason the difficulty is at a 5 is because the exam questions can be very specific. First exam not so much--it was easy. I don't think it should be this specific for a beginner's biology class. You basically have to memorize every single thing he says during lecture. I guess it could be worse?
Dr. Barry was a great choice for Bio115. He is very good at lecturing and his exams aren't extremely difficult. Watch the lectures and you will do great on exams! His synchronous zooms are also very interactive allowing students to learn a lot from going to class. Overall, great teacher!
Dr. Barry was amazing. The class does require a good amount of work on your part but all the assignments are easy if you pay attention. I recommend using the Test Yourself slides at the end of his PowerPoints to study for exams! He does give extra credit but it's not a ton. He does curve his exams as well.
He is good at explaining things, and if you show up to class you will be fine. Just study the powerpoints before exams and they will be easy. He is a funny guy constantly making jokes, and seems like a really nice person overall.
Dr. Barry really is a fantastic professor and always did his best to relate the class to outside material and would occasionally jokes- or literally we had pet days occasionally where a good 15 minutes of class was devoted to people showing animals. BUT his exams are hard and PowerPoints don't cover everything!
Took Barry for 221. Not too bad since tests weren't the whole grade. Go to class & don't miss any notecards. Before tests, read the textbook; he likes to pull a lot of figures from the book for tests and I noticed a lot of questions from the tests were better covered in the book than in the PowerPoints. Class a little slow at times, but not too bad
One of the nicest Professors I have had here. He cared about students and worked with you if you struggled in the class. Offered 6% overall grade extra credit. Not the most organized but still graded on a good time scale and gave feedback if needed.
I would never recommend this professor to anyone. Honestly, he is good as a person, but he is very bad at teaching. His exams are very hard and if you just study the powerpoints, you will not pass. I studied the powerpoints ands got 60's every single time. I did the extra credit and barely passed with a B.
Honestly, I did like the professor as a person but not at teaching. His exams are so hard and he did not record the lectures at all. We could not refer back to what he said during the lecture so it was very hard to pass with a B even with extra credit. I don't recommend him at all, take another professor if you can and don't trouble yourself.
The Exams are not related to anything on the slides or he teaches. Honestly, the only thing that made me pass the class was the extra credit he gives.
He cares more about being funny rather then making sure the materials are well understood. He is funny, but it gets annoying. We fall behind in class very frequently.
Does not make sense when explaining lecture. Pretests given do not help, if you dont teach yourself the lessons you will not pass.
He is a very caring and liked professor. He likes to be personable with the students so he will share his likes and dislikes with students to also get them engaged. Very diligent with emails and his work, if you ever need help he is available on discord or through email
I'm only giving a 2 because Dr Barry's humor is very good, however, he just throws diagrams up on the board during his lectures and expects us to know what's going on. If you don't have a strong backbone in biology you'll struggle. Poor communication outside of class, quiz/test questions are WAY too specific. Does not update grades often.
I dropped his class before I failed. He teaches unreasonably in depth compared to other bio 115 professors. I used to love bio until I took his class
On top of being both humorous and engaging in lecture, Barry is always open to work with students outside of class, as well as answer any question in class. The topics discussed in class can be difficult to grasp, but as long as you show up and listen to lectures, you should be ok. We had an assignment due before every class to boost grades.
Although the class itself can last forever sometimes with the long lectures and his somewhat sleepy, made for podcasts voice, he's a really good professor. Dr. Barry explains the concepts well, and he and his TA's are available pretty much whenever with lots of office hours on Discord. Make sure to study for the exams and you'll be just fine.
Dr. Barry is a super nice guy I just wasnt a fan of his teaching style in lectures. However, if you do all of your assignments and study your notes you can pass easily with an A.
In class he just goes through a slideshow and talks about the slides. He doesnt really go any further in depth about the topic. You have preclass hw to do every class. You have a weekly quiz due and his tests are hit or miss. Half the time its exactly what you were going over in class and sometimes its like hes coming out of left field.
This professor is amazing. He makes class fun and has a good sense of humor. I was a fan of his teaching style and really liked how he would explain things. The exams are just how he went over in class and he is very caring and understanding. He isnt the best with responding but thats because it was a large class with about 200 students
MasteringBio reliant- if you don't read the textbook and do those assignments, you won't learn. Barry is a great guy and his lectures are fun but they won't prepare you for the exams whatsoever.
Overall, he is a super sweet and funny guy. The class is fun and super engaging. My few complaints are one, with the complexity of the exams, and two the pace he takes the lectures at. He goes very fast. With the exams he just makes them way harder than they have to be. P.S. if you're not gonna go to class don't take it
Really bad professor to be honest. He's an okay person but severely lacks any skills in teaching. Was always lost in his class, no matter how many notes I took. He has some extra credit opportunities, but he literally got rid of one of them. Why? God knows.
Barry is genuinely a nice guy and pretty funny but his exams don't really relate to the material. I stopped paying attention in his classes because what he goes over literally doesn't help you whatsoever. He only had two extra credit opportunities and they were both for his clicker points, what I really need is extra credit on his crappy exams. . .
Dr. Barry is a pretty cool and chill guy but the class can be difficult. The mastering homework and pre-test do not reflect the material that will be on the exam very well. Also, his slides do not contain a lot of information so you need to pay attention and add notes to the slides
Dr. Barry is one of the best biology professors at WVU. His lectures are very informative, and he truly cares about his students. He provides a lot of extra credit and is always willing to provide additional help if needed. His exams are fairly difficult, and the questions require a good understanding of all of the concepts. 100% recommend him!!
If it wasn't for his 6% EC at the end I wouldn't have passed. Exams reflect about 30% of lectures. He would forget to grade my exams/assignments; sometimes for up to 5 weeks at a time. If you're a bio major be prepared to barely pass. Don't take this class if you don't have to. If you miss 1 class you're behind a full module. Wouldn't recommend.
Avoid if you're not good at bio (and maybe still avoid if you are) Has no skills in the art of teaching
I only took Dr. Barry because I heard he was a great professor, I'm afraid they were wrong. The lectures are very difficult to follow and has so much information but at the same time none? Some question on the test weren't talked about in class. He is funny and a nice person and does care about his students he just can't really teach.
Barry is awesome. His course is easy once you figure it out. You need to take good notes and read the textbook to do well. He has a pretty dry humor which I enjoyed. I loved that he offered lots of extra credit. He gave us the opportunity for 10% EC on an exam and 6% to our overall grade. I've had him 3 times and I would take him again. 10/10
Lectures are thorough but well-explained, lots of diagrams and videos. Barry goes far more in-depth than most other 115 professors (helps if you took AP/Honors bio), but I find myself referring to his slides and ideas all the time to help me in BIOL219. He's tougher than other professors, but if you do well, later bio classes will be a breeze!
He is an amazing lecturer, and is usually really helpful when something is confusing. Whenever a question he proposed had 2 "correct" answers, or there was a real mistake. Instead of defending himself, he explained the mistake and then decided to not count the question towards the final grade.
Honestly, terrible class. Tests are incredibly hard and not covered in class half the time.
His lectures are not good, he jumps all around and his slides don't help. He says a lot of stuff but barely says anything at all. He has weekly pre-class modules to do, worth a grade, but it's over stuff we haven't covered yet and the videos provided don't help so you have to look up everything yourself.
Kevin Barry is an overall good professor. However, his teaching style is not for everyone. Professor Barry has a very nice voice to listen to, he is clearly spoken, and he is personable. His powerpoints are a struggle to get through, they are unorganized and often have missing information. I recommend also using the textbook.
His lectures were excellent and i learned a lot. Barry is definitely one of the hardest biology professors to have, but also the best when it comes to learning content
Dr. Barry has a very likeable personality but when it comes to teaching he is lacking. His in-class slides have little to no information on them, the exams questions are stuff students couldn't possibly know, his homeworks are on material we haven't even learned yet. I will never take another class taught by Dr. Barry no matter how likeable he is.
Professor Barry has a great personality, and his lectures are very fun, but that's about it. His homework does not really relate to course content, and the exams can be pretty tough as they are not like what is gone over in the lectures or on homework.
Dr. Barry is a great professor. He has always been willing to explain difficult concepts to me personally when I need it. His tests can be tough if you do not go to the lecture, as most of the questions have figures directly from the slides. He offers lots of extra credit throughout the semester (roughly 7% onto your overall grade!)
Dr. Barry has an amazing personality that can make lectures very enjoyable/interesting. He is great at keeping students engaged by his lecturing style and having us do in-class assignments. Exams were not difficult but it is important that each lecture is attended to fully understand everything. Plenty of fun extra credit opportunities were given.
Dr. Barry was a very funny, caring prof. I didn't find his course difficult, although studying was necessary, especially for the exams where we had to classify phyla of animals. He offered a good amount of extra credit, and homework was not challenging. His due dates were at weird times, so beware of that. Overall, I thought he taught quite well.
I think that he is doing his best. He is a very enjoyable, interesting man and I truly think that he is a good guy. However, I had to teach myself almost everything in this class. If you have a background in biology I think that you would be completely fine, but I do not and I was not fine. It was not a great time but he is really nice!
He is very fun and a personable guy, his lectures didn't really fit my learning style. If you're more of a hands on learner this will be difficult for you :(
Terrible- did not help anyone, no one was on the same page, office hours were pointless
You will get an A in this class if you show up to class and make a quizlet or Anki cards with the end of lecture questions and poll questions asked in class. The students that struggled around me never really came to class and/or used quiz questions to study.
This class was specifically based off of the powerpoints and that just wasn't my learning style so I wasn't a fan of the class. If you prefer self teaching and slide material, he might be the professor for you.
i never looked both ways when i crossed the street on my way to this class
RECORD HIS LECTURES. His tests are extremely lecture specific you need to know those slides inside and out to do well on his exams. Sometimes he'll say things in class that will appear on the exam but you would only know to study it if you heard him say it. As someone who is good at studying, I never got an A on any of his exams.
Enjoyable teacher. Moderately hard. His lectures will prepare well for the exam
After my third class with Dr. Barry, his style of teaching hasn't changed a bit, but little change is required. His lectures remain simple, informative, and easy to review later with your own additions. The quizzes aren't difficult, and the exams don't require a mountain of studying. If you do find yourself behind, there are plenty of EC chances.
I really love Dr. Barry and his personality, however I found that his lectures didn't give me as much information I needed to prepare for the exam. I looked over homework and lecture slides and all material he gave us, but I felt like the tests were much harder than the practice provided and there were questions with topics we hardly covered.
I had Barry for both 115 and 117. Seemed like a nice guy, and some of the stuff he said and put in his slides were hilarious. Make sure you do your hw and understand the material as his exams are mostly based on the slides. Lots of EC opportunities though (esp in 117) so take advantage of those.
Took BIO117 over the summer. He had a tendency to get off topic so we missed out on some material but the mental breaks kept me engaged during class. Definitely had to study but none of the concepts were too difficult to grasp.
He did not explain the lectures in a way easy to understand.
He makes really weird and annoying jokes. The one was just creepy. "I wish I was DNA helicase so I could unzip your genes"......
Such a nice guy, but his exams were so hard. If he did not offer extra credit, I would have barely passed the class. I received my worst grades throughout college on his exams.
Very good for someone who thrives in lectures, hw given is mostly done in class, it is test heavy with that making up most of your grades, but if you get a C average on exams and get good grades on hw you will have a B in the class
If you have a background in biology prior to this class, then you will probably be fine. If you are aren't already good at bio, you're probably screwed. I did not know much biology going into this class and he does not explain things well at all. His lecture slides are almost useless because he does not define terms and it's almost all pictures.
Do not take this class. Kevin Barry seems like a nice guy, but is not very good at explaining things and teaching. If you don't have a very strong biology background, you will struggle very heavily in this course. As someone who usually gets very good grades, I did not get more than a D on any one of his exams.
Kevin was an amazing professor when it comes to bonding with his students. His teaching methods and his lectures were not beneficial to my learning. I had to teach myself the things I did not already know. He is an excellent professor if lecture teaching is how you learn.
Extra credit available, tests worth 50% of grade, lots of opportunities to earn points but tests are what matters. We had 3 exams and 1 final. Weekly 20-80 min textbook activities, weekly quiz, pretest before every exam (represent tests well) all had multiple attempts. Only a handful of hw all semester. Good, funny guy but has a robotic voice.
Professor Barry's class takes work, but using resources like the textbook and unstuck ai alongside the lectures can really help. The content is challenging but engaging if you put in the effort.
He's a nice guy I guess, but he lost my test (he does it on paper) and I had to remind him 3 times, 2 weeks before, to fix my grade because I was failing at midterm. He didn't submit the grade until the day of the midterm cut off. He tells odd jokes, and his PowerPoints are basically only pictures, which is rough because he only uses them to teach.
He's a nice guy I guess, but he lost my exam (he does it on paper) and I reminded him 2 weeks before midterm, 3 times total, because I was failing. He didn't submit the grade until the day of the midterm cutoff. He also only uses PowerPoints to teach, and they are mostly pictures. I never got higher than 65 on exams, and I had taken biology before.
Prof Barry was very kind and caring, and he made all the subjects easy to understand. You definitely need to pay attention, but if you go to class you will be fine. He teaches everything well and uses different methods so that more people can understand the topics
Dr. Barry's exams are pretty complex, and his class can be challenging to understand if you have no background in biology. However, he can be funny and somewhat helpful when you talk to him.
Kevin Barry is a nice guy and all but he does not know how to properly teach. He gives the vibes that he is a new teacher who should not be teaching on his own. Pretests before exams but are harder than the exam (don't correlate with the exam and are graded on your grade on it) and had long hw assignments and a quiz every single week. Do not take
This class is easily one of my favorites that I've taken, and the way Dr. Barry structured class time with lab time was perfect. With only two open-note exams and scattered homework assignments that we all worked on together, the actual assignments were a breeze. For the labs, all we had to do was be there and ask a question, definitely recommend.
He explains new content as if you already know it (mansplains). He also has few extra credit options, test are super hard and there is barely any assignments to get your grade up. I also don't like the way he does iclicker.
Do not take Kevin Barry if you want an A in Biology.
Bio is just a class you generally have to study for to do well, so if you have decent study habits, you'll be good. He definitely read off the slides a lot, but he was a very chill and nice professor, and he definitely knows his stuff. He also gives some bonus points for showing up to office hours. Kevin's a cool guy.
He's okay. Class set up is not too hard, he is just hard to follow in class.
This class is relatively easy but if you miss enough you're cooked. I got pneumonia and had to take an exam with a 103 degree fever, so I got a bad grade. There aren't really enough assignments to cushion your grade if you do bad on one of the exams, but there is a LOT of extra credit (5% added to your final grade, 8% added to final exam grade).
As someone who didn't miss one lecture and participated in iClickers, went to two tutors, office hours, and would study a week or two in advance for exams, I would not recommend him for Biology. I have never been a bad test taker, and I never got above a 60 on the exams. I exhausted many resources provided, and I am just hoping to pass.
i have no idea what happens during his exams. i go to class, do the clickers, go to office hours, take notes, grasp the topics really well.. go to exams as if i've never even looked at the slides or heard a word in class. god forbid he makes his exams a little easier. this class made me rethink my major.
He is so kind, but his exams are so hard that it makes it incredibly difficult to get an A in this class, even with all the extra credit. Never did better than a C on the exams. And forget about emailing him, he will never respond. Its such a shame because he's a great guy, but do not take this class if you want an A in biology.
Do yourself and your GPA a favor: switch majors, and save yourself from this class. I still don't know whether or not I passed yet, but I do know that if I did, there was no way I would've been able to without the extra credit (8% added to the final exam and 5% to overall)
Rework your schedule to get another professor. He still does a paper exams that suck and won't respond to an email for weeks.
Attend class or else you will miss points in attendance and daily participation. Participation can be made up but office hours are at terrible times. Exams are not simple multiple choice so you are required to know the material beyond surface level. He offers a lot of extra credit.
Tended to get off track and only read off the slides during lectures. The tests and homework were more in depth then the broad topics he was teaching us.
Weird guy, lots of trick questions on his test, grading scale is weird, only talks about plants.
Changed my major because I couldn't get above a 60% on any exams he gave us, if you can, switch professors asap.
Amazing guy, probably one of my favorite professors this semester. Does very well explaining concepts in lectures. Skim the textbook, do the homework, study a few hours, and you'll do well on the tests.
He is funny and gyatt. I am typing this up during the last lecture of the semester actually.

Professor Barry was definitely my favorite professor this semester. He makes lectures so interesting and really inspired me to want to learn. Exams are super easy and genuinely just common-sense, I didn't study once during the semester and my lowest exam score was a 78%. There's a couple of extra credit options during the semester, TAKE THEM!
He is a funny dude, but not the best at teaching. His lecture slides are the most helpful, but during lectures he veers off topic a ton. A lot of his slides are missing a good amount of info that you had to be in lecture to get or take it from the textbook. HW and Quiz once a week, everything is waited the same, even exams.
