Literally worst teacher on the planet and makes the class ten times worse than it would normally be.
He uses his class periods like a review. HE DOESN'T EVEN WANT NOTES TAKEN DURING CLASS!! If you can teach yourself from the textbook then you might do ok. He expects you to learn the subjects on your own & take a daily quiz before class. If you don't understand something you're screwed. Hate this class. Don't take it with him if you don't have to!
He is a terrible teacher, does not like it when notes are taken during class period and insists that they're on blackboard. He pulls everything from the textbook, even his powerpoint slides. It's unfathomable that he is still allowed to teach at the university.
Worst professor at UVM. If you can't find a different professor, hold off on taking the class because with him you are going to withdraw or wish you did.
Not as bad as others are saying. Yes, you are expected to have read the chapter the day before class. He treats class as a time to review the material and answer questions. He drops low grades in every category. Not too bad unless you are lazy. Do the work and you will gain a solid understanding of statistics.
He was extremely rude in class, and made the material impossible to learn. Very true that he calls out people taking notes in class, which is unreasonable. You basically have to teach yourself the book, do prep questions on material not gone over in class, and he "goes over" what we missed. Take the class with anyone else.
My experience has been awesome it his class. Lectures move swiftly and are hilarious. You do a lot of in class activities which is a nice break from just copying slides. You are expected to read chapters before class to have a basic grasp going in, but his practical examples explain the material well. Helpful as well as offers online office hours.
Kevin Beard is such an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about the success of his students, and is ALWAYS there to help if you are struggling with something. His lectures are very interactive and helpful, and his sense of humor only adds to classes. His exams are graded extremely fair, and you should do well on them if you put in the effort.
Everyone prior to this comment is crazy. Kevin Beard is one of the best math professors I have ever had. He makes class engaging and easy to follow and I feel as though I am actually learning and absorbing what he's teaching. I was almost swayed into taking the course with someone else and I'm so happy I didn't listen to these negative comments.
Before the first lecture I was scared out of my mind that I ended up with this professor from reading previous comments. However I was pleasantly surprised. There is never a problem with taking notes in the class, he is willing to answer any of your questions, and he is very approachable. Keep up with the reading and homework and you'll do fine!
I don't know why people don't like him because he is a very nice guy who simply expects you to do the work (not ridiculous). You're supposed to read a chapter before every class but as someone who never read the chapter once, I got an A in the class... I just took notes during class. If you're ever confused he's always willing to help you!
As long as you read and do the homework, as well as pay attention in class, it is not difficult to do well. He loves questions, and is really good at explaining trickier subject-matter. He somehow manages to be excited about statistics, and is very open to helping students whenever.
This pains me to write, because Kevin Beard is amazing and I don't want to jeopardize my chances of being able to take him again! His lectures are clear, and everything makes perfect sense. He's funny, and always made me want to go to class even though it was in the early morning
Beard is a really really good stats professor. he makes things clear, and often does fun in-class activities to help us understand the material. you have to read the chapters before lecture though, or you won't really get it at all. there's also a lot of homework, but it's easy to get an A on. Midterm and Final were tough, but he scales them a ton.
Everything is clear and well explained. Very strict grader but fun in class.
Kevin is great! He makes a bunch of dad jokes in class so you're always laughing. His assignments and test can be a little difficult, but as long as you pay attention and lecture and keep up with the readings, you should be fine. This was the first STAT course I've ever taken and Kevin made it very easy to understand.
Gives really good lectures. Makes harder material easy to understand. Explains things so students will understand. Makes a lot of jokes in class. One of my favorite professors ever
The online 141 course was great and I only didn't get an A because of a few silly mistakes. One thing I did have an issue with was the exams were heavily slanted towards theory and not doing actual problems, while the homework was more math based. It made the exams a bit trickier.
Awesome teacher. Good person. I wish more professors could be like Beard. Take him if you get the chance. Tests are very fair.
A great choice for an intro to stats professor. He was very helpful at office hours, but most of the content is explained well in class. Professor Beard is a really nice guy who's great to talk to. I wasn't blown away by his lectures, but his personality made me want to go to class everyday. Advise: do practice problems in addition to the homework.
Kevin is GREAT. Makes dad jokes through every lecture, breaks down everything into clear pieces and shows how to fit the pieces together, and is beautifully intolerant of people being on their phones, which is awesome. SO many profs won't speak up about that and it's so distracting. Take him if you get the chance!
Truly the best professor I've had at UVM. He makes you work for your grade, but every lecture is chock full of Kevin Beard dad jokes and insightful commentary. He offers an absurd amount of time from his already busy schedule to meet with students, and truly cares about seeing every one of his students succeed. Take Stats with Beard.
Best math professor I've ever had, and is the kind of male math professor who treats girls exactly the same as guys. Hilarious, fast grader, very accessible and easy to talk to. He cares about every student succeeding and will bend over backwards to help. I have some health issues requiring accommodation and he was awesome. Take stats with Beard!
KB is a lot of fun and makes lots of corny dad jokes which makes the lectures a little less boring. You do need to go to lectures and do online reading quizzes, but they aren't too bad and he's really helpful if you ask.
Beard is very clear in what you need to know and is very knowledgable about what he teaches. He is really nice, tries to make students laugh, and straight forward. He is really accessible outside class. As long as you come to class and pay attention, you will do fine and he is willing to help. He's really energetic and motivating.
Makes dad jokes, a real icon.
This class was worth taking a pre-dawn bus to get to, truly. Beard is an amazing teacher and an all-around great guy, funny and kind. I'm jealous of his kids because it's obvious he's a great dad. If you show up and give it a good-faith effort, he'll do anything at all to help you succeed. 10/10 would recommend.
Beard is an absolute unit. He is super funny and his lectures are great. This class is really tough, but if you have a math mind, you will be fine.
He has 4 days a week of office hours. He is always funny in class, making jokes related to the subject. He has daily I-Clicker quizzes for completion. You have to buy an online access code which has homework and the textbook. Your math background will affect how much you need to study but he is helpful, providing lots of practice problems.
Prof. Beard is very intelligent and quiet flexible in-order to best meet the needs of his students. He provides plenty of resources for outside study (not required) to help with preparation for quizzes and exams. My only complaint would be that for a quiz there are only 8-10 questions so one wrong is the difference between and A and a B.
I had Beard for 141 and I took 183 knowing he taught it. He is funny and helpful, making sure he has office hours for any student. I did struggle a bit but ultimately pulled through. The mechanics between 141 and 183 are slightly different as 183 has group projects. My only complaint was how little projects were worth compared to tests.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Barely gives you the time of day if you go to his office hours. Won't look you in the eye when you ask him a question. All he will do is hand you an answer key and barely acknowledge your presence. Will blame bad test scores as result of being on your phone in class even if you weren't. Wants to make his students feel dumb.
This guy talks so fast and is so disrespectful. His quizzes are impossible (and worth most of your grade) and have little connection to the lecture or online homework. When it came to the midterm and final he didn't give us a hint to what going to be on it and just told us to study everything. Biggest mistake this semester was taking his class
Easily one of the best professors at UVM ... funny guy who wants his students to succeed. His lectures are interesting, and if you follow what's expected, you'll be fine. The material isn't too difficult to grasp, and he's available outside of class if you need it
He was a great professor and was really helpful through transitioning to online learning. His lectures are engaging and funny and he is very interactive with the students. There is a good amount of homework and reading to be successful but it helped be more successful in the class.
He explains things way too fast and expects you to know a lot that he never taught. In class he only goes through half of the problems and never fully finishes them and expects his student to know how. When you ask him a question he is not helpful and makes you feel like you are an idiot compared to him. Don't recommend taking STAT183 with him.
Beard was a decent professor but I found that his teaching style of talk at me didn't work for me. He also seemed to really nice and friendly in class and then would have an attitude when someone asked for help outside of class. I would not take 141 if you don't have to.
Professor Beard has been my most helpful professor at UVM. When classes went online, he provided office hours each day and made his class very accessible. Can't say enough good things about Beard, he made the class engaging for different levels of stats knowledge and always went the extra step to provide support for students. Really great guy!!
He is a pretty funny guy but I was not a fan of his teaching style. Quizzes and Exams were tough.
Prof Beard is good at what he does, responsive to emails, and compassionate. This class itself is hard but given that it is a prerequisite for higher stats classes, thats not his fault. If you dont need to take STAT 141 I would strongly recommend taking an easier stats class but if you do need it Prof Beard is good professor to take it with.
I struggle with math, but needed more statistics experience for working with research papers, and Professor Beard made everything very easy to understand and the class was a lot easier than I expected it to be. There is a decent amount of work, but it is not anything difficult to handle He also plays awesome music at the start of class.
Great prof. Explains everything in detail which is very helpful. Very funny and understanding. No exams except final. Biweekly quizzes which have very similar problems as the homework. Do the homework and you should get a C / B on quiz without even studying because they're so similar.
Kevin is such a nice guy. Started every class with music, and we got through all the content planned for the semester. Always so nice to his students despite us being online and pretty unwilling to participate. All the grading is done by the online textbook. He scales tests and is very understanding. Homework is a joke, but mandatory.
He assigned group projects over Microsoft teams during a pandemic and makes them due 2 days after a test. His tests are very difficult and are 1 hour. His teaching style is watch the videos and come to class and go into breakout rooms and look at black screens. His teaching style can also lead to confusion. Grade weighting is bad too(60% on tests).
His lectures are incredibly boring and impossible to sit through. The course starts out super easy then become very difficult and time consuming near the end. The worst part is that Beard will lecture you on a chapter and then the quiz for that chapter is 4 week later, so you pretty much have to re teach yourself the content before the quiz.
Kevin Beard is awesome! This class could be easier or harder depending on how natural statistics comes to you. Beard is great at explaining things and gives handouts for notes that are very helpful if you go to class. Participation is tracked with iClickers but you can use the app. He also plays music before class starts which is very nice
Kevin Beard is ok, I like that he gives you a few drops on grades for each assignment category. However, his sick policy this semester was awful. No remote classes, and you can't take quizzes virtually unless you're documented to have COVID, which if you're sick really screws you over. Also hard if you're not the best at math.
He is a great professor with very strong dad energy. He explains concepts really well and is available to help if you need more. I really hate statistics, but he made it easy. There is an emphasis on problem-solving versus memorization.
Nice guy, knows his stuff. Lectures are pretty dull because it's stats but he presents information clearly. This class was really easy at first but became more difficult and time-consuming at the end. Nice thing is that he drops the worst grades from several categories at the end of the semester. Not a bad choice for a math requirement.
Kevin is a nice guy, but this was a challenging class for me. I am not great at math or test taking, and in this class quizzes and tests are heavily weighted. Definitely go to class, do all the homework, and study for the biweekly quizzes. Kevin takes class seriously, and holds his students to high standards. Bonus points for all the dad jokes.
Beard knows his stuff. He can be very relaxed and then very rigid. Hes got the most part clear during lecture, but its definitely a requirement to attend in order to learn how to use statistical calculators online and pass the class. The key to doing well in his heavily graded quizzes is be as literate in StatCrunch as possible.
The guy gets assigned about 300 students a semester and probably works around 60 hours a week. However, he's a funny guy and teaches pretty well. He can tend to go a bit fast in class but he's actually very available for one on one help if you ask.
I made an account just to rate Beard. I will give credit where credit's due, and he does hold a lot of enthusiasm for life. A joie de vivre, if you will. But, he is not understanding when you missed class due to medical issues and will write you passive-aggressive emails threatening to fail you. He really took away my joie de vivre this semester.
Professor Beard is that guy who thinks he is hilarious and well liked, and isnt. He wears a persona of caring and cool, but when peers in my class needed help he was rude and passive aggressive. This class is taught essentially by the textbook, in my opinion it would have been better if Kevin Beard wasnt there at all.
Though Beard has some bad ratings for some things. I think overall it is an average class. It's pretty upfront in the syllabus that the grade is test heavy which is annoying but it is what it is. I find his lectures interesting enough. Do the homework and do not miss class. Otherwise taking the quizzes will be a pain.
Beard is a great person who has a great energy in lectures that really helps with such material as statistics. Unfortunately, the online Pearson home work was wild with reading comprehension quizzes, in class quizzes, and multiple chapter homeworks a week with 20 questions each. Each question has multiple parts. Had multiple office hours at anytime
Math isn't my cup of tea and he didn't make it any easier to enjoy. That being said he's class wasn't horrible, I think he just tries a bit hard to be funny.
Kevin Beard is like one of your friend's dad. Pretty chill and takes his class somewhat seriously.
Kevin is one rad dude, and his lectures are always a joy. He's got this weird annoying dad vibe, and he always tries his hardest to make class material fun and easy to understand. Quizzes and tests are graded with the student's best interest at heart, partial credit is usually given where credit is due. Unfortunately, He has NO BEARD, -1 point
Mr Beard is a pretty chill dude and he makes class enjoyable for a somewhat dull subject. This class was pretty easy, and Mr. Beard did a great job presenting the course content. He sometimes goes a bit too fast but the material isn't very hard, and he's always willing to help you out if you just ask him for some help. Would definitely recommend.
He is a very kind professor who makes his lectures as interesting as math can be. There are bi weekly quizzes which can be difficult since there aren't many questions so it affects your grade if you make a mistake. However every quiz and the final exam are open note. Very good professor I learned a lot sometimes I just wish we went a little slower.
Amazing, enthusiastic teacher for a subject that is normally so boring. He really made me enjoy statistics. Kevin is great!
On the upside, this class was ridiculously easy. On the other hand, I am convinced that Beard somehow convinced UVM to offer him a job despite having never taken a math class before. The man simply does not know what he is talking about.
Very engaged with the class and all the tests were open notes which were nice. Basically, if you go to class and pay attention you should be fine. He tries really hard to relate to students which can be quite annoying and cringy. Also, not the most approachable when asking for help.
bruh this dude like made me sooo mad. like yeah hes funny at times but he doesnt teach well and just relies on the stupid hw to explain stuff. he also gets pressed about stuff for no reason.
Kevin is a very helpful professor. He goes over homework and example problems with us in class which I found extremely helpful, and when I went to him outside of class for assistance he was understanding and kind. The homework and tests aren't difficult if you come to class and follow along with the worksheets.
Terrible teacher. He does an awful job explaining class material and he is super rude when you are unsure about something. I took AP Stats in HS and I am still doing mid in his class.
Great lectures, very passionate about material, cares about students doing well in his class, lots of work, but all helpful to learning, open note quizzes, guided notes with examples. I am terrible at stats and doing very well in his class. overall an amazing teacher
Kevin's great! I'm pretty terrible at math, but he does a good job of making it understandable. Walks us through the process rather than getting bogged down in the theoretical weeds. Funny guy too. His exams are not what you'd expect though - be prepared to understand the concepts rather than complete problems like on the homework.
I like Kevin Beard a lot and have been taking his classes since fall of 2020. I think he is very effective when it comes to having office hours and a clear posted schedule. My only real complaint is that he moves at a fast pass so note taking can be tricky in class. You will be better suited reading the chapter before class. Overall great professor
Kevin's a great professor, but like others have said Exams and Quizzes can be more difficult than expected. However he covers a lot of the material with Power Points and Handouts. If you're not doing well in class, it's very easy to talk to him and get help with improving your grade.
His classes move at fast pace, so yes, he does get irritated if you ask questions that slow class down, especially if they have already been covered or can be answered in the readings. He does provide enough material IMO to do well in his class, but outside time from class and HW are expected, reading, practice problems, etc.
Prof. Beard is chill and has clear lectures. The class was kind of boring but always understandable. There was quite a bit of homework but it's not too hard to work ahead so that you won't have a lot of homework later in the semester or unit.
Beard makes it very clear how you can succeed in his class. What he asks of us is not much, so just show up and do the work. Quizzes and final were not too tough. He is super accessible outside of class, although I feel like the textbook and homework was enough help.
He doesn't make his own PowerPoints. When asking for help be prepared to not get any or it be a superficial response that leaves you more confused than you were to start. He can't explain things in a way that is understandable and doesn't provide clarification when asked, usually just says "do what you feel is best".
I really liked Beard, he is a nice guy and is accessible out of class if you need help. His class was not a lot of work, very manageable and the quizzes were not bad at all, everything is open note which is awesome. The lectures were not my favorite, I found the material to be kind of boring, but I think he tried to make it more engaging.
Genuinely contributes nothing. Completed the entire class (every reading, reading question set, HW assignment, quiz, and the final) through Pearson/MyStatLab and in-lecture presentations were pre-made PowerPoints from Pearson as well, but attendance is still mandatory and is very strict about late assignments. Constant power trip.
I took STAT141 with Kevin and it was horrible. He is awful at explaining things during class time which made the class that much more difficult. If you are going to take this class expect to have to teach yourself all of the material outside of class.
Do not take STATS with Kevin Beard. are they just letting anyone teach these days? another one of uvms scarecrow professors
Beard is meh. His teaching style is monotone, and he pulls largely from pre-made lecture slides. This class is largely dependent on technology so as long as you stay good on using that, the class isn't particularly difficult. The quizzes and the final were open notes. I think he tries to be engaging with the class but often falls flat.
Professor Beard is great! So funny and personable, and teaches Statistics at a great pace. I felt like I understood what was going on like 93% of the time, which I think is pretty good. Study up on 80s rock, because he'll quiz you on songs at the beginning of class every day.
I am very bad a stats but Prof. Beard is very clear in explaining the concepts. There are quizzes that determine the majority of your grade, but if you do bad there is extra credit that boosts your grade a ton. There are lots of oppertunities to bring your grade up if you do bad on the quizzes. There were also some fun activities in the lectures.
Kevin is awesome. He really knows what he's talking about... homework isn't anything crazy. 4 exams throughout the semester that he gives you tons of time to prepare for and little cheat sheets to bring on test day. He really wants his students to succeed and sometimes offers extra credit. I loved this class.
terrible late policy. doesn't answer emails. generally unhelpful.
Hated this class with my entire soul. Kevin is okay, (he tries to make things lighthearted with dad jokes), but the entire class is entirely run on Pearson content. I wouldn't have minded that too much if he could actually teach well, or it felt like I was learning anything. Also the "quizzes" are basically just tests.
I did not like this class. Each 'quiz' is basically an exam, and they are worth a huge chunk of your grade. All his lectures and practice questions are based on Pearson content, and he fails to teach the basics before delving into more complex content. Unless this class is required for your major, take the easier class.
so. much. homework. not understanding at all. i hate you kevin beard.
Very nice guy, so much homework. Averaging around 2 hours per assignment with multiple assignments assigned each week. Quizes are pretty much tests. Too much homework
Kevin Beard is the most charismatic and funny professor at UVM with great music taste. There are 4 exams, weekly homework problems, and applicable group projects. I suggest not taking notes during class and focusing on listening because his lectures move pretty quickly. But again, I would highly recommend taking this course.
don't know why beard gets so much bs on here, he's super caring and very informative. if you reach out to him at office hours or his q&a sessions, he will one hundred percent help you out. it's difficult, but he's not out to get you. he also offers quiz corrections for credit back if you send him an email
Great person and very informative, but the bi-weekly quizzes are a little too tough, and they are pretty much your only metric for your grade. If you're feeling confident, take his stats, but I wouldn't recommend him if you're looking for stats to support your gpa.
an internally angry man with a huge ego based off his 80s pop hits music taste. is disrespectful to those who need help. provides little resources to study for quizzes.
Really difficult quizzes that don't cover what we spent that week talking about. Also very unhelpful when asked a question and almost condescending.
Impossible to study for quizzes. Do not take this class. I've taken many math classes and took this one as a break from my harder classes and this Stats 1 class is harder than my calc 2 class. So unhelpful as his attendance is mandatory yet class material is NOTHING like the “quizzes” (they're actually just tests)
Kevin made 8:30s much easier to go to. There is a lot of hw, but they reflect the tests accurately. He is very fun and lively and demonstrates concepts in a variety of ways. He will give you help if you ask, but has no tolerance for those who don't want to put in the effort of learning, and this is not a class you cant put effort into.
Course is very well structured with clear expectations and routine assignments. He explains concepts in a way that is clear and makes sense. He is a nice guy and classes are engaging. Weekly homework and mandatory attendance.
great professor!
I found this course to be harder than both semesters of calc (MATH 1212, 1224) and pchem (CHEM 2600); although unrelated, typically they are considered harder math courses. Everything is online, which leaves little room for partial credit. Powerpoints and daily printed handhouts (wasteful) are poorly designed and confusing, but are all online
Kevin runs the class in a very structured manner. There is a lot of homework, but I think all the practice is necessary to understand concepts. Towards the end, it got a little complicated, but I passed very easily! There are quizzes every other week, but you are allowed a cheat sheet. I highly recommend this class!
nice guy but im ngl 11 questions per exam is ridiculous, it feels like there's a gun to my head everytime i take an exam. one wrong mcq and you lose -7%
curves stats 1 but doesn't curve stats 2 make it make sense 😍😍
If the class is required, it's not terrible but otherwise don't recommend. He's fine during class. The material isn't horrible. If you try to talk to him, he's hit or miss though. He's snarky for no reason then nice the next day. He'll improve your grade if you go to office hours, but it's arbitrary. 4 exams (not cumulative) and 4 case studies.
Beard was a nice guy and, respectably, always brought energy and enthusiasm to his lectures. He explains the material well, but the daily physical handouts are inefficient and wasteful. The homework solidifies everything effectively and is nearly identical to the short, bi-weekly quizzes. He offered helpful review sessions before each one.
