He resembles actor Scott Bakula, only with black hair and less wimpy. His Beginning class jokes get dull. However, to me he's the best I've ever had. I'm taking him again next quarter for Math 065! He gives you extra credit for homework and is quite clear
Horrible!!! The only way I'm learning anything in this class is by correcting the many mistakes he makes. Not clear at all, the only way people pass his class is by all the extra credit (homework...) and if you had a good instructor in the class before. B
hard to follow, he can even confuse you on things you already know. Ability to draw pictures can get you points--even if you can't add.
The second class I took with him, and I repeat my original rating. He's the best. Very straight-laced. No nonsense type of guy. I've noticed a lot of people rip him. They're wrong. You'll only hate this guy if you're afraid of math. King of partial credit
He's a good teacher, very friendly, and very helpful.
Very clear, helpful.
he is not so good
You can earn tons of extra credit in this class (every quiz and test, attendance and homeword) Will give partial credit for absolutly no reason, even if what you are doing makes no sense. He grades everything the day you do it, which is amazing.Crams several lessons into class.
Kevin is one of the best Math teachers I've had the priviledge of taking. It's true: he gives you lots of opportunities to succeed with extra credit. But he does expect you to STUDY, so don't think he's a pushover. THE BEST! :-)
hard to follow, i could have done better just reading out of my book. but the way he explained everything was so confusing i couldnt even follow the book.
HORRIBLE!
One of the most boring classes ever. It's easy to zone out and get lost. He's really weird, but then again, are their any college professors that aren't.
I have always liked Math, but did not enjoy Kevin's class at all. He was not encouraging, actually insulting at times in his condescending attitude toward anyone who did not remember the Algebra from the previous level. There are too many excellent math teachers at EVcc to waste your time on Kevin.
good teacher, straight to the point, maybe a little weird
He is sometimes a jerk. I asked for help once and he totally blew me off because I didn't know how to do the problem in the first place, He is a little rude but I guess he is a like teacher just not by me and a few other choice students. He is just a military man through and through.. He just teaches too fast.. If one students gets the concept well it's time to move on to the next topic.. I will not take him again.!
He tries to help students, but I find him to be unapproachable. His penetrating stare makes me feel excessively guilty when I do not understand. The biggest flaw: he says he is here to help us learn 152, not to teach us 125. Sounds good in principle—in practice he puts a heavy burden on students. Should speak pro of study groups, not just syllabus.
he is unclear. his tests are nothing like the examples or the homework. and he doesn't like to help that much.
He doesn't wanna help at all. very unclear about what he wants and doesn't explain at all. just gives one example and moves on.
He's REALLY hard. He should make his exams more like his examples or the homework that he assigned. He's a little eccentric too, likes jokes...starts off most classes with them.
He's a really good Math teacher who rewards you with chocolate if you get over a 100% in a test
He is very difficult. His exams are NOTHING like the examples given or the homework assigned. My opinion is he should not be teaching in a school but rather head back to the military.
He was very helpful adn seemed like he wanted me to do well.
also had him for math 140, he is a great math teacher. has high expectations so it is a little difficult but if you do your home work, your in good shape.
Kevin is a strong, structured instructor who is here to teach and not to be your friend. He can teach quite fast at times and test you on the theory more than just on the homework, which can be frustrating. He provides ample extra credit, allowing you to pull up an entire grade. While a tough instructor, he really cares that you learn the subject.
He speaks too quickly and without clearity. Only if you learn best on your oun, at the pase of lighting, and have already taken 140 (This is just a refesher corse) then this teacher is right for you. Other wise forget it
One of the best teacher's EVER! Easily understood, funny, and cares about student's grade!! Awesome, awesome, awesome!! His personality is super hot!
He is one of the best teacher's ever!!! I love his personality, his style, and he truly cares about his students. He gives so many opportunities to raise your grade as well. He's AWESOME!
I am surprised about the negative comments! His teaching couldn't be anymore clear, and many fellow students agree. He does want you to understand math, but isn't that what the class is for? It truly was an easier math class than what I had expected.
He graded homework. so you had to do the homework and that sucks if you already understand the concepts they are nor short assignments but if you can follow basic algebra you'll do fine. the only other annoying thing is he shows stupid internet cartoons that everyone has seen a million times before the start of each class.
great teach is really good and very helpfull
So helpful! After hating math for so many years he was just the teacher I needed! I really like him and his teaching! He would show you the easy way to do things that made so much more sense. And yes he assigns alot of problems, but all the answers are in the back of the book so you at least know that you are doing the problems correctly!
I'm surprised that a lot of people didn't like him. His grading sometimes was a little difficult, but he made it simple for students to get A's and obviously wanted everyone to succeed. I'm not good at math, but he made things interesting.
Kevin is evil. He is really mean.
He loves math, and he wants everyone else to love it so he pushes he students to do to much. I love math and I am good at it, but i need someone to show me the steps. He is too busy with his schedule for the class that we don't have time to ask questions.
Prof. Bolan really cares about whether or not his students understand the material. Grading is based on a wide variety of factors, (not just tests), so you can succeed if you do the work. He's available during office hours and I found him to be very helpful at explaining things so I could understand. Rate highly.
Kevin is really helpful and he wants all his students to succeed. He makes it possible to pass his class with an average grade. Gives many opportunities for students to raise their grades after a bad quiz or test. Drops lowest quiz and test score towards end of quarter to enhance students' quality of grade. Overall, great teacher!
The best teacher ever. If is someone complaining is because they do not do homework or they do not like work hard for achieve a good great because the teacher is doing his best for help the students success.
Very fair and reasonable. He gives extra credit for good attendance, and offers it on exams. One of my favorite things about Kevin is that he is great about giving partial credit for problems if an answer is wrong. I have nothing but respect for this man.
best math teacher guaranteed
Really fair teacher, a lot of opportunities for extra credit and partial credit. Homework and attendance was extra credit. Posted notes online which was very handy.
Math was nothing to me before I met this man. His class had me clawing my way up to the grade I got, and I enjoyed every moment. His explanations were very clear, and the homework he gives reflects on the exams. Plus, he threw us a party for finishing the calculus series. Best math teacher...E-V-E-R
At first upon taking this class I really thought he was a good professor and enjoyed going to class. But as the weeks have gone on he seems less and less interested in helping those who are confused about the material. He's also not a very approachable person and has the tendency of being rude to a struggling student. Disappointed.
Excellent teacher. It was my second time taking Calculus and everything that I didn't the first time I understood with him. He explained how the math came together so we could understand it rather than just memorize equations and accept that they were right.I hardly did any of the homework but I still understood everything and got decent grade.
Kevin is a really nice guy. His math 99 class is super easy if you put a little bit of effort in. You get extra credit just for going to class and doing your full homework assignment. He explains everything very clearly and he's also very approachable. I had to miss a lot of class and I only did parts of the homework and still got a B+.
Professor Bolan is an excelent instructor. He shows his students the "GOOD","BAD" and "NONSENSICAL" way of answering problems.
He is a very good teacher and makes things very interesting. he is available for help all the time and makes math very enjoyable.
Good teacher. I like that since we have to go through the effort of doing the homework he takes the time to give us a grade for it. Tests were pretty easy and he's pretty lax with grading. Overall good guy. I went from failing with Hermann giving ti my all the first time to passing with an A the second time with min effort. starts class w/jokes.
He is a very good straight forward teacher. Be prepared to do a lot of work if you want an A but gives lots Extra Credit. I really wouldn't want take math from anyone but him. He always has a joke each day. lets you spend as much time as you want for the tests. He gives credit for coming to class which I highly recomend to understand it perfectly
He puts everything into plain english then explains how you can do it in the math world. He does good examples in class. He doesn't get off topic and even has his class notes online. Keeps you up to date on how you are doing in class and quickly grades everything very fairly. I Wouldn't say he makes math fun or easy but he does make it understood.
Mr.Bolan helped to shed minimal light on the material we were going over. So in that regard he was minimally helpful. The book was more informative. He was extremely unprofessional and insulting when students had a question. He clearly favored some students more than others, and unfortunately grades were impacted by this.Did not teach all material.
Anyone who says that this guy wasn't clear, wasn't paying attention. I think his military background gives him plenty of experience in showing you the base, and then building you up from there. Best math teacher I've had.
He's just awesome. I really liked his teaching style.
great teacher, explaines things very well.
Kevin is my best professor for my whole life. Even you have to put a lot of effort in his class but it pays you back: good grade in your transcript and knowledge
Took Kevin for both 91 & 92 and he is an amazing teacher. Wished he was teaching MATH 141 & 142! Explained everything in great detail. Went into 141 and was completely prepared (maybe overly prepared). Not an easy class if you don't do the homework.
I had him for all of calc and linear algebra. He goes above and beyond to help students and makes himself available for help all the time. I was very happy to have him for math!
Great teacher. Would recommend 100%! Extremely helpful. checks emails constantly. Attendance is not mandatory but he gives 5 pts. For perfect attendance. All homework was on MML but he gave book work that was worth 10pts extra credit each half of the quarter. Wish I was able to take him for 92 and 107.
Mr. Bolan is a great teacher. Perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about math. He moves the class at it's own learning pace. great communication, you can email him at anytime and the latest that he responds is the same day. The extra-credit-king also. If you solely prefer testing and no HW, you might consider a diffent instructor.
I had Kevin for 91 and 92 and he is an awesome teacher. He explains everything thoroughly in lecture, uses mymathlab that gives great examples and online help. He will help outside of lecture too. He can come off as brash but you just have to get to know him and do your work! The way the class is set up its easy to get a decent grade.
Best Math teacher. Super hard tests but there are always extra points on them, but study hard. Makes everything seem pretty clear and there are lots of extra credit things if math isn't for you to help make up for it in your grades. I will never take a different math teacher
His homework methods are nice an easy to use, but when it comes to tests, He does not like the use of scratch paper. Also, if you use a method he says is ok, but he doesn't suggest, he might mark you down on quizzez and exams for it.
Mr. Bolan is one of the best math professors I have had. He makes everything very clear. I took Math 92 online with him and he is very good about getting back to students and helping them out. If you have to take math take it with him! He has extra credit opportunities also. Seriously recommend.
Best teacher I had. He is helpful and flexible. Always points for extra credit. He doesn't come off as the nicest person at first, I don't think I ever saw him look genuinely happy, but he is willing to help you. Handling of the class rocks. I learned a lot. Tests are hard, but not intolerable. If you work at the subject, you will do well.
Kevin is the greatest math teacher I have ever had. Incredibly focused on students being successful. He does not expect you to be able to do work that he has not taught yet. I read all of the bad reviews and I can tell you that they are completely innaccurate and whoever wrote them simply did not have a good attitude going into the class.
Kevin is one of the best teacher I have had. Well organized, clear explanation and gives extra credits. Quizzes or exams every Friday, homework every week and three labs in total.
Kevin is amazing. I had him through the calculus series, and I was never displeased. When you first meet him, he might seem a bit stern, but he's actually really fun. Tests are pretty hard and there is a lot of homework, but you learn the math. His lectures are crystal clear. I would recommend him to anyone willing to put in an effort to learn.
Grading is tougher than tough.
He's hard but a really good teacher. he tends to take off points on little things so be careful. he can seem rude sometimes, but he's actually really great. He explains everything real well. Tests are hard but you will do well if you pay attention. I would recommend taking his classes.
Kevin is a wonderful math teacher, I'd say he's the best math teacher I've ever had. He explains topics clearly and points out the patterns and short cuts that will help you become better, not just pass. I would take him for every math class if I could!
Kevin explains everything very clear and shows you different methods of solving problems so you can chose what works best for you. He gives a lot of test and exams, but they aren't hard if you do the homework, plus he is a very fair grader! He takes points off for small things(like not labeling), but you just have to be careful when you answer
Have taken him for MATH& 151,152,163,264, and MATH 261. He is amazing math teacher who explains the material well. Also, he gives 5 extra credit for each 2 weeks if you attend all the classes ( each test week). so you get 25 extra and another 25(up to 35) extra credit from quiz or test, homework, and so on. If you do your homework, it is an easy A.
Great explanation Never test something he didnt teach He DOES remember you YES tons of HW (and it's part of the grade) I suggest you meet him face2face rather than via email Respected by students (at least I respect him)
Kevin starts every class with a joke or funny picture. He explains things quickly and clearly. He's open to questions and dialog during class. Don't ask questions on something he's already explained because you weren't paying attention.. He is invested in helping students who will help themselves. Expect a LOT of homework, but responds quickly.
He gives you online homework, text book homework and math labs. So much work to the point it can get confusing what you need to learn, 2 hours+ a night. Must show all work on tests or you will lose major points. If you get an answer right that is worth 8 you will get maybe 2 or less for the answer and -6 for no work shown. I do not recommend.
I took Kevin class for math 151 152 163 260 261 264. He is awesome and make me love math. He explains everything very clear, willing to help students a lot. The homework is reasonable and he gives a lot extra credit in homework! He has quiz and exam every Friday . His exams are hard but it won't make you fail in the class. I recommend this teacher.
He's a good teacher, but he just couldn't teach math in a way I could understand. If you're meticulous like me and you depend on details to better understand how operations work, he isn't the right teacher for you. His approach is more suited for people that are naturally good at math, not those who struggle with math.
Lots of tests and quizzes sounds bad but it really helps when you have less to study for each test. Great lecturer, for a math class it's not as sleep inducing as you would think. Very available to help students. Expert in his field. Gives almost unlimited time on tests as long as no one has a class after. Great professor
He starts off the quarter really optimistic but as the quarter goes by, if students don't show for tests or if the class doesn't do well on a test he tends to take it out on everybody. He gives so many opportunity's to gain extra credit. NO CALCULATORS!!! If your bad at mental math then try to find another professor because never get to use one.
I took Kevin for the calculus series and for linear algebra. Kevin is a great TEACHER, but a very cocky person. Can treat u like a retard sometimes when u ask something or do something wrong. His lectures are GREAT and very ORGANIZED. His exams are VERY LONG but identical to homework which makes it easy! Allows notes and unlimited time for exams.
Exams are easy if u do the homework. Gives extra credit. He can be rude sometimes and likes to show off that he knows everything but if u can get passed that then u will like him. Quiz or exam every week which is nice because it keeps u on track. Would take him again because he explains everything very well.
just great!
He spends all of class on the "daily joke" and administrative stuff that his actual teaching (which is long-winded and confusing) is a rushed, 10-minute lecture. Always goes over time. Says HW is graded just if you did it but takes off points for not showing work or the original problem anyway. Overall just a frustrating, awful class.
Kevin's a little dry, but he's a very good teacher. He gives extra credit for perfect attendance and lots of extra credit with homework completion. Four quizzes and four exams - he'll throw out a quiz and an exam grade. He grades his tests by your work, so even if you get the wrong answer you'll get credit for the stuff you did right.
Worst learning experience ever. Great if you already have a nack for math, but if you struggle like me, not a good teacher to take.
He doesn't really care about his students. He rambles on about random stuff. Your more confused about the subject after the lesson then before.
His expectations that student's should have a comprehensive understanding of previous math is unrealistic at the CC level and his feedback on tests are unnecessarily harsh and read things such as "bad math", "not good enough", "you should know this" or "silly". Overall I found him to be extremely discouraging instead of helpful and supportive.
Kevin was not a bad instructor but he could be very rude towards students, i would never ask questions in class because he would give you an "are you that stupid??"-look. SO MANY assignments (online HWs, group labs that's graded individually which we're not allowed to write the exact same thing, a quiz every week and an exam every week). got a C.
Kevin was my favorite professor i've had so far. He was a great teacher and I never left the class confused. He offers a ton of extra credit but there is also a ton of homework. Can be a bit rude or sour sometimes but overall I found him funny. Comments on test can be a bit discouraging such as "bad math" "really?" and more. Overall great teacher
Kevin . . . : * lets the top students out of the final, * offers extra credit for homework completion, which is not mandatory, * is willing to answer questions, * is open to offering extra time on tests, and * assigns the occasional 'lab,' which can be completed as a group project.
Honestly Kevin was really helpful and so nice! He seems like he doesn't care about his students but once you go up and talk to him you see that he really does!
Best math teacher. Definitely loves math. Knows his stuff. Presents the curriculum in a clear organized way and makes sure every student knows exactly what they need to do to succeed. Will most likely remember your name by the second day of class.
Kevin is a nice teacher. There's extra credit for pretty much everything inside the class (tests, homework, labs, participation, and much more). He does a lab assignment which is like a group project for each person (they're pretty easy if you know what's going on in the class.) He's really fair on grading and a great guy.
Kevin might be the right professor for someone who really enjoys math. That being said if you have a hard time understanding the concepts he has a tendency to be rude and condescending. He gives you almost a ludicrous amount of homework. He grades insanely hard and most of the time he says one thing in lecture and totally means another.
I thought that Kevin was a great teacher who knew what he was teaching. You get tests and HW back fast. He assigns between 25-30 problems a day, a few hours in Calc 3. He grades hard on labs. The hardest thing for me was how sarcastic he was, and how he made fun of women. His tests vary in difficulty but allows notes, and lots of extra credit.
Bolan is grumpy, but in a a slightly entertaining way. He's very passionate about math, and you can tell he wants everyone to learn. He seems intimidating at first to approach, but he's very helpful and kind once you do. He gives credit for the work you on during tests, not just if you get the right answer. No pop quizzes.
Don't take Bolan if you don't like math; he'll make you HATE it. Uses intimidation to get students to pass, incredibly difficult to approach, upwards of 4 hours of hw a night which is ludicrous even for an AC class. If you don't understand something he'll make you feel bad about asking for help. Really bad quarter; just take someone else.
He makes me study Math. He is very good at teaching, easy to understand, knows what he is teaching. He gives chocolate to who gets A in each exam as a reward. In the beginning of every class, he starts with a funny joke to make the class awake. He is an awesome teacher! I would definitely take him again.
he is very friendly and easy to pass his class
Great teacher. Rally cares about the students individually. Very organized. Lectures are very easy to understand. Made calculus super easy for me. Has extra credit opportunities for just coming to class consistently.
He's an amazing professor and one of the best instructors for math!
Grade is heavily based on tests Kevin is very nit picky and petty and a very poor lecturer really doesn't care about his students keeping up with him
He is very detailed, therefore he also marks little things on tests.
He gives a good amount of extra credit. He breaks the quarter into a couple blocks & if you have perfect attendance, he gives 6 pts EC per block. He also offers EC for completing book hw (pts based on amount done). drops a quiz and exam so if you bomb you aren't done for. You are graded on completion of online MyMathLab online hw. Good, easy class.
I took statistics with Kevin and he offered a lot of extra credit and assignments to help cushion our grade. He gives as much time as you need on tests as well as formula sheets and a notecard of notes. For stats, he taught the logical/intuitive route rather than formulas for certain sections which fits others learning style better than others.
Kevin used publisher's powerpoints, but didnt rely on them. Rather than taking specific steps and using a formula for everything, he taught in a way that we use logic to find things out. Lots of EC and can drop 1 quiz and exam. Wasted a lot of in class time, but was still effective and a great teacher.
I always try to take his class. Grade is based on quiz/exams, can drop 1quiz and 1exam. Come everyday for every 2weeks str8 w/out missing a day, get 5 extra pts (easy points). Extra time on exams if you need it, to a reasonable amount. Get a 90% > on quiz/exams get a candy bar! Strong grader cause he wants you to be ready for the next math class.
Kevin made this class more enjoyable than most with a good sense of humor, and he is more than willing to give extra help if you need.
His class is so hard, he teaches easy stuff, but have a really hard question to answer in the exam. Too much HW within a week. If you like maths in crazy. just go for it. If not, just ignore his class and choose another teacher.
Kevin Bolan is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. His lectures are very clear and understandable, and he shows all steps. He is also very understanding and gives a lot of partial credit. Though, it might seem like he is being a little condescending, he just wants you to improve. And he gives SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT. Overall, he is Great.
Gives a quiz or test at the end of each week in alternating order. He drops the lowest of each but they can't be both from the same block of material. Gives extra credit in every assignment (exams, hw, etc). He requires you to turn in HW for Calc and lets you use a notecard for each quiz/exam. Easy A if you put problem examples on your notecard.
Homework is extra credit and showing up everyday will get you extra credit so that's really great to buffer scores. If you don't know your stuff, he will grill you infront of peers. Writes condescending comments about mistakes on tests. If I wasn't secure in my math ability that probably would have frustrated me and put me off from the material.
I've had to take Math 096 twice already because I couldn't find a teacher who could explain the lessons to me in a clear way until I took Bolan's class. He's a great teacher if you need concepts to be broken down step by step. If you keep up with your homework, attend class everyday, and ask questions success in class is easy.
I found Kevin to be a great math instructor. I took him for algebra 2 and statistics. He can definitely talk a lot, but when it comes to the subject matter, he is very clear. He is always willing to help outside of class. Funny and friendly guy.
He teaches with an unsure attitude and at a non-consistent pace. He has a great personality and is well respected. Takes a lot of class time talking about non-lecture related subjects. Tests and quizzes were very long. He sets high expectations for his students but makes very vague/confusing grading comments. I learned more from the book honestly.
All quizzes and tests based on homework. He always lets you take time on any exam.
He is a great professor ever!
