This is my 3rd class with him and there's a reason! Probably my favorite teacher of all time. The class itself was really easy. He's very clear and informed, open to anything anyone has to say, and has a lot of interesting stories from his own travels. And well, the hot ratings speak for themselves ;)

Made a very boring subject fun. He is one of the best instructors I've had! He truly loves his work and it shows in his teaching.

He makes the subject extremely interesting and understandable. The fact that he is a very cool guy with overflowing wisdom and entertaining life experiences probably helps. awesome guy, great class, GREAT teacher, moves at a perfect pace, and really cares about the students. he has about 40 in the class, but somehow manages to get to know everyone of you. the class can get confusing for some, but you work in groups, so that makes it easier. PLENTY of extra credit

This teacher is an intelligent individual, but he speaks like Keanu Reeves- very amusing to hear him dismiss a class with "be well" in a surfer accent. He teaches you exactly what is in the book, the way it is written, so if you read ahead of time class can be a little boring. Tons of xtra credit (just by showing up) and an interesting subject.

I've reccomended this teacher to many of his friends. He is always full of energy and always has some great stories to tell. There were only two tests all semester, which were open note. He also offered extra credit. A great person and a great teacher

Very likable and funny teacher. I had him for Philosophy and now for Logic. In Logic you do need a book and to do homework, but he makes the homework very understandable before he assigns it and gives a lot of extra credit. I reccommend this professor to anybody. Why he's not full-time is a complete mystery and a shame.

Amazing professor. His lectures are very refreshing and it makes you WANT to go to class. It is pretty easy also. The tests are open-note and he covers everything you'll be tested on. Just go to class and take notes. You'll be fine.

I liked taking his intro to Philosophy course. Prof Bortolin is kind of a walking enigma: He's kinda buff, but moves and talks like a buddhist monk. What's that about? Haha. Anyway, his lectures are good, hardly any homework, a few essays. His class inspired me to think for myself.

While Kevin is a wonderfully passionate, excellent professor, the subject matter was extremely boring and the tests were kinda hard. Your grade is based off only these two tests. The tests are take home/open book which sounds easy but there are VERY complex essay tests so beward if you do not like that. AWSOME teacher! BORING class!

I heard he was easy for philosophy but this LOGIC CLASS WAS NOT THAT EASY. Though I received a good grade, I really had to put in the man hours. The class starts out easy and accelerates into some crazy logic puzzle stuff. He's cool though. Take him.

im taking his philo v01 and v04. best teacher i have ever had. he makes you want to switch your major to logic or philo. he expects you to work for your grade but grading is very helpful for the tests. amazing teacher. funny as hell and very down to earth. i wish he taught every subject. worth your time for sure.

He is very knowledgeable in his subject but his lectures are very boring! You must attend class to take notes because what he covers in class is practically verbatim on the tests! He gives you a study guide a week prior to exams and exams are open notes! He doesn't take role so you could always get notes from a friend if you have to miss a class.

He is truly an amazing guy, and he DOES care. he'll take the time to answer your questions if you have any. So don't be shy! My boyfriend wasn't even in the class and just came in one day and liked him as well. He discusses each different philosophy with equal importance. never said which one was better or anything like that.

I had him as a sub for one day, He tought me more in a day then Pro. Lew did in his whole semester. Jocks talked a lot in my class and when he came to sub he told them to be quite and everyone listend for once. I wish I would have taken him, if I ever need to take another PHIL. class I'm taking him, he was amazing...Trust me.

It's a pretty easy class. I should stress though that even though it is a philosophy class which is a class about debate and discussion you should not make the mistake to express it in an exam. His interpritation is the only one that counts. So keep that in mind. He will say things in class he expects you to take it as it comes. Don't reword it!

Easily the best teacher I've ever had. Very introspective. An excellent story teller and really keeps your interest. His class has changed my life. I look at the world differently now and I've become a happier, wiser person. This man understands this world and he can see right through all the lies. He knows what really matters. I took both Phil v03 A&B with Kevin, and so glad I did. Take good notes and you'll ace the exams. Tests are multiple choice with an essay which are very duable! He is so knowledgeable and has such passion for the topics!

I have never experienced a better professor. A true gem at the community college level.Not only will you learn about the subject but you will learn how to learn, and learn about some of the deepest truths about life and understand how to apply them.

I've taken Bortolin for two semesters - Intro to Philosophy and Intro to Zen Buddhism. He's a real down to earth, relaxed guy who's extremely knowledgeable of Philosophy. He's someone you'd want to get a beer with. Both classes "required" textbooks, but they were basically just references for the two essays you must write. Theyre easy, fun classes!

I took a class on Eastern Religions, taught by Kevin. By far, one of the best teachers I have ever had. Covers the topic very well, makes it interesting, and seems to be very fair (in mine experiences). I'm amazed to find a teacher of this caliber at a community college.

Amazing! I took Intro to Philosophy with Kevin during my first semester at Ventura College and so far it has been my favorite course. He makes philosophy interesting and easy, the tests are simple and open-note, and he goes over the readings in class. He also has a lot of great stories to tell. I highly recommend him. Kevin, was an okay teacher, not in my particular taste, but his personality matched the class the taught. he is very clam, and mellow (hard to hear at times) because of his "mellowness" I would get drowsy in class. interesting material though. he would even start the class with music(making a setting)of the religion we were studying

Interesting material. Show up( in group discussions you cannot make up outside of class), take GOOD (pay attention) notes and you will ace the midterm and final. Midterm and final are open notes. If you never show up and do not take good notes, then you missed out on an easy A.

Interesting material, prof. comes off a bit arrogant. He does not encourage discussion, as he only wants to hear himself talk. When you ask a question or make a comment he seems annoyed, & usually answers in a roundabout way, or makes you feel like it was a stupid question. If you're looking for a good phil. class go with Ron Mules. He rocks!

He was a very good teacher and he made everything easy. All you have to do is take good notes and go to group activity days and you will get an A. He lets you use notes on his test and there is only a midterm and final. Very fun class and interesting. Highly recommend him.

Whoever says that Bortolin is not a wonderful professor, doesn't understand what it's like to have a professor who inspires you to find yourself, and your true potential. Fantastic teacher. Very nice to look at. Always super clear, and tests are easy if you take notes (open note tests.) You don't need the books at all, and make sure to sit by people you like because you'll be in a writing group together all semester. Grade = midterm, final, and 10 writing groups (EASYEASYEASY just show up on those days)

Bortolin is a good teacher. He is extremely passionate about philosophy. His lectures are really interesting but they are pretty slow. I found it hard to stay engaged even though I liked the material. Group work every other week with writing activities, which are super fun! You learn a lot about yourself and others. Easy class. Very good teacher. I took this class at night and he used a different format than normal. Had us all get into groups in the beginning and that is how he took attendance, the group marked you if you did the assignment and showed up. You could get half credit if you showed up and didn't do the assignment. Basically go to class and do the work.

Hands down the best professor I have ever had. He REALLY cares about you understanding philosophy. Doesn''t test. Grades merely on participation and attendance. Wonderful content. Kevin is amazing. I took him for Zen Buddhism and he helped me so much. He takes this class very seriously and intends for you to do the same. Tests are awesome, but if you want to know your grade, you wont, not until the end of the semester. I love Kevin and he is more interested in you as a person and your self development more that a grade.

He is loving, caring, and has open arms for students. He is an inspiration and has open arms for his students. Let him help to open your mind! He helps you understand!

Great professor, one of the best! Takes his job seriously, as you should with your education. Took four classes with him(v01, v03a, v03b, and v09), and they sealed the deal for me in deciding to major in philosophy! I highly recommend him!

My favorite class by far! Kevin explains everything thoroughly and if you are present you will understand. Apply what he teaches to your life, and it will definitely improve it.

Kevin is really awesome! Really inspirational in my opinion. He has pretty rad stories and class goes by real fast! His lectures are pretty mindblowing and you will love every second of his class! I was never into philosophy, but now it's one of my favorite subjects! Philosophy will be an amazing experience.

I enjoyed this class because Mr. Bortolin has a very soothing voice, his lectures are beautiful and the group discussions were great. Go to class, take good notes, participate in the group discussions and you will get an A. You will feel ten times smarter when you take this class. You will learn a lot more about yourself and others.

Take this professor if you want a good one. You learn alot. The other option is to take professor russel sander but thats only if you want to fail a class and hate philosophy forever.

He's very passionate and knowledgeable about what he's teaching. Make sure you go to all the class. Lots of note taking but he gives and outline. Bottom line, take really good notes.

He is the best professor I've ever had. He takes education seriously and it's very rewarding because he engages you to question about things you haven't put much thought into before. He is very knowledgable but cares more about your understanding than about tests. Would definitely recommend!

He taught really good life lessons to take in but his lectures were really hard to stay up in. Attendance is only mandatory on the group discussion days. Only graded on 2 tests and 10 group discussions. It frustrated me because I only missed 4 classes out of the whole semester and still got a B. Make sure you really understand what he's talking abt

Kevin is awesome. Very inspirational and knows his stuff. However, this class certainly isn't an easy A. There's a total of 300 points: 100 midterm, 100 group writings, and 100 final. So you basically have to get A's on both tests and writings to finish with an A. Attendance isn't mandatory but it's difficult to understand the material if you miss.

Amazing professor, really loved his lectures and his class was super easy. If you have an open mind this class can really make you think about life in a more positive perspective.I would definitely take another course with Kevin.

I loved every lecture and would definitely recommend Professor Bortolin. There's no homework except for reading. So you only have the Midterm and the Final. His lectures make you view life in a deeper perspective. He makes you question you're essence & pursues you to live a good life with meaning to it. Please take his class you wont regret it!

He is truly amazing. His lectures are very inspirational, he can be quite hilarious. He only grades you on 3 things: Midterm, Final, and In-Class Assignments. IF you want a class that you can skip some days and pass THIS IS NOT THE CLASS. You need to show up and be ready to take really good notes. If you take good notes then all the tests are easy

Amazing lectures.

He is really good at giving lectures. You will get a lot out of his class. I found some of his quotes inspirational. Read all assignments, participate in class, do the writings and you will be fine. He rarely answers the email, so if you have something to ask, meet him right after class to get the answer.

Great professor!! I can't express how great he is, he truly knows his subject well and gets students to participate in discussions and he also puts you in groups to get ideas going around. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!

His Intro to Philosophy class is lecture based and graded based on attendance and tests. His lectures are interesting and insightful. Take good notes and you'll do fine.

Kevin is the best professor at VC. I have taken all of his classes and wish I could take more. None of them were very difficult. However do not take his classes just for a good grade as you will miss out on so much more. He is clear, inspiring and exceptional at what he does. If you put in the time, you will walk away with a better outlook on life

I have been practicing Chi-Gong and meditation for two and a half decades on my own. Professor Bortolin's Eastern Philosophy course has filled in the remaining gaps of my knowledge in a clear and delicate way. He is an experienced mentor for any student seeking a deeper experience. I believe that other professors should enroll in one of his classes

Professor Bortolin's class has helped me grow so much. I am more whole than I was before. His way of teaching made me fall in love with learning. Don't be afraid to take any of his classes. Professor Bortolin is the best professor I've taken in all of my years of community college. His classes, when taken thoughtfully, help you better understand yourself and others. It will grow you in beautiful ways. I always feel better coming out of his class than when I came in. Words I'd use to describe him: True, inspiring, open, love, happy :)

An interesting professor, his discussions were interesting. This class made me feel like a great person and a horrible person at the same time sometimes, but I had a lot of personal and emotional growth in this class. I would take him again. Attendance mandatory. Absolutely NO cell phone use in the class, don't even try he will call you out on it!

By far my favorite professor at Ventura College, very classy man, inspirational, gives you a view on your life that just sticks with you forever, his class was the easiest just show up and listen to what he says, the assignments were just readings he gives out and the homework is all your opinion and at the end he lets you grade yourself.

He is an excellent teacher! The class is an easy A! He isn't strict but he is strict on attendance and having your phones out. His lectures are really cool as well.

I took his class at 2PM and he had such an ASMR relaxing voice plus the material just made me tired after being there since 9:30 in the morning even though it is not boring stuff. It is very lecture heavy but it's a very easy class. He allows you to use his notes. I do recommend him!

He is a great professor his lectures were inspiring. His class was fully online we met once a week in person. The online work isn't for me, lots of reading, lots of hw, videos, media heavy. He accepts all late work thru the semester. If you can keep a routine and do the online reading/quizzes/papers/videos/tests then you will fine.

Overall one of my favorite professors ever. His class is peacefully quiet and those that are wise will listen and feel the benefits of his class. Very insightful, kind, and understanding. There is homework each night but its easy, other than that no tests. Personally, I would take him again. I recommend his in person class.

Lectures are amazing and interesting. There is a lot of reading, just keep up with it the class is great. If you fall behind you can turn in late work. I recommend this class to everyone, if you are open to the material and give it a chance it can easily become your favorite class.

His voice is soothing to me. He lectures so you have to listen and follow. He answers questions very well. Lots of reading so keep up. This class can be hard to digest so be open to it and ask questions. He is really nice he will play music in the start of class. I recommend him.

Overall great class and not too difficult. I took it during the summer, so very expedited but manageable. Lots of reading but it is interesting and he doesn't seem to assign busy work. Quizzes are all open note and do a few interesting discussion posts. Basically fully asynchronous and would definitely take again!

Kevin Bortolin is, even now, 25 years later, THE best professor I have ever had in my entire life. He not taught me things in a way that I never would have otherwise learned, but he also showed care and compassion and respected all of us. It was like sitting and listening to a highly attained master speak. I was compelled with respect for him.

Again, I don't want my rating to be anything less than a 5/5. Kevin Bortolin changed my life. He is a wonderful person and he taught me the basis of understanding that now guides my life. Just as Schopenhauer was a guide for Anagarika Govinda, so much so he was the guide for my understanding of a path for the rest of my life. Bless this man.

Professor Bertolin is a true teacher who imparts knowledge to help students see the world in an organized and inspirational way. He is super knowledgeable and organized, yet personable. He shared stories about travels in Europe and India. Assignments are meaningful; discussions, written reflections, and time-period music are part of the class.

Honestly I have such a love hate relationship with this class. Ive enjoyed my semester with Bortolin and he is an amazing teacher but his lectures are so boring and I do not learn much from them. All learning for me personally was done through reading (LOTS of reading/homework) BUT what I did learn was fascinating and will stick with me for life.

I took this hybrid, he was super chill but I would lowks fall asleep during lectures. He loves the subject for sure tho! I think there is like 7 lengthy assignments each week but hedoesnt even grade them, it grades right away.
