Kevin was an awesome professor. He was willing to help all the time and he really wants all of his students to succeed. I am horrible in math and I got an A- in the class and an A+ on the Final.
I don't agree, I think he was knowledgable but very impersonable. I really didn't feel like I could approach him. This was by far the worst math class I have had to date, and he graded on a bell curve, which isn't bad, just not explained from the start.

Very good teacher. Very clear and wants everyone to understand. Highly recommended
awsome dude!
AMAZING! I do not like math, but this guy is the most amazing math professor I've ever had. I actually enjoyed math. He is very straightforward, very animated and explains things very well. If you're going to take a math class at UNM, take it with this guy!
One of the best teachers i have ever had. i really don't have an interest in math, but i loved this class!!! he's awesome!
so awesome, i loved him. so animated, such a good teacher, even if you dont like math
awesome teacher. The reason i passed this class. if he teaches any math that you need then take him.
Great teacher!!!! I have a really hard time with math and he did a great job of teaching the class so that I could even understand it. If you need a math credit take him you won't regret it.
Excellent teacher, one of the best math teachers I have encountered. Able to explain calculus clearly and shows tricks of calculus clearly too.
Great Professor. He is interested in teaching and it shows. He also makes sure everyone understands what he is talking about. Definitely take your math class with him. He's also very friendly and approachable.
This is the most enthusiastic professor I have had while at UNM. I wish I had taken his course for Math 180, maybe I would have passed. :) Strongly recommend this professor to everyone.
He is the best math teacher ever!! He actually made me like math, which I never thought was possible! If you can take one of his classes you should!
Mr. Burns is an excellent teacher. He has a passion for what he does and explains things thoroughly and effectively. He has a great sense of humor. However, while teaching he rarely gets asked questions because he really doesn't give time to ask them. His lectures are very clear, so questions aren't really that necessary. I highly recommend him!
Most adreniline filled math teacher you will ever have, he ran across the room all the time, He explains well and unlike other people he was probably the most approachable teacher I have had other than Dunlap for physics. I even still talk to him if I see him around, cool guy, and very dedicated to mathematics. And he graded the homework very fair
Very easy and fun class. Lecture based math class; doesn't answer questions in a positive manner, but his office hours are helpful.
Very energetic professor, willing to explain anything to the students, and explained everything in a very clear way. He made calc one a fun class to go to.
Great instructor, extremely funny and entertaining, takes extra steps to explain the material.I dislike math, but his class is a joy to attend.
I HATE math but Burns' class was fun, and very helpful. He was able to meet with me and help me with whatever problems I had with the class. He keeps his classes interesting with his jokes and his general demeanor. If I ever need another math class, I definately will try for him again
This math professor was one of the best i had. His lectures were so easy to understand, and he explained things very well. Overall a good class, just show up, pay attention, do the few homework problems, study the reviews, and you should be fine for the tests. I would suggest this professor for any math class. He is great at teaching.
Kevin Burns was a very good math teacher and lecturer. I had a final in his class the morning of my graduation, and didn't have to sweat his test at all. He makes clear what is expected to earn good grades in his class through homework and tests. He keeps his students engaged, and there are no surprises! If you didn't like Champine-take Burns!
Burns makes learning easy and fun with real life examples. He explains the material very well and at a good pace. If I (god forbid) have to take any more math I would take it from him.
Excellent teacher. The examples he went over in class were very comprehensive and useful for the exams. He has a great sense of humor that will make you laugh even on your roughest day.
I'm not good at math AT ALL, but Kevin made it enjoyable and made sure you understood it. If the class does bad on an exam, he will curve it a little. He gives great examples and is always cracking jokes. Overall, a great class.
Kevin is an overall great person and wonderful teacher. Though I hate math I looked forward to going to his class each day because of the fun atmosphere and his very clear, concise explanations of things. He is HILARIOUS too. Always came into class with a smile and something witty to say. Loved him, loved the class.
Great teacher! I've learned so much from him and I actually understand math now.
He is the 1st math teacher that actually explained things clearly enough not to be redundant but just enough for EVERYONE to understand and ask questions. When u ask a question he will show the problem in a different way instead of just showing the same way of a problem. HES GREAT!!! and i dislike math but he made if fun and easy!
I'm in his calculus class right now and I Enjoy the class alot! His exams are pretty hard but he is great teacher, he is avaliable for extra help at calculus table. He is actually pretty funny too
Funny guy! Liked him a lot he teaches really fast though and sometimes it gets difficult keeping up with him. Depending how good you are at math go to class and take a lot of notes, most of his tests are based on the examples he uses in class. Tough grader try to look over work before submitting it! Little mistakes cost a lot.
Best math teacher you can have I promise!!!
Good professor. Very helpful and funny. However, he makes little mistakes on the board. Easy grader, but his tests are somewhat challenging.
As long as you go to class, you'll get a good grade. He's a fantastic person, loves math and loves teaching us! He doesn't hat his job. His humor makes math a lot more interesting using real life situations. For once I actually aced a math test.
Kevin is cool. He goes fast but explains everything he needs to. Tests are based off examples he does in class which make them easy.
Loved Kevin! I have no interest in math but I really enjoyed his class. He loves his subject and is extremely helpful and understanding. I recommend him to everyone!
If you really wanna understand calculus and r looking for an excellent professor Kevin is the one!! trust me!!
Kevin acts like he just hopped off a desert island after 20 years. Definitely a bit eccentric. But overall a good teacher. He teaches well in class. Not too helpful outside of class when I've tried to approach him though.
He is the best teacher you can take at UNM. If you decide to take your math through UNM instead of CNM, take Kevin! He is so clear and concise and INTERESTING! Plus he is very funny. His class was great to go to. Take him!!
One of the best math teachers I've had. He explained everything concisely, clearly, and was very organized. I highly recommend this teacher. If you're looking for a good teacher for Math 150 or any other math course taught by him, your search stops here. If only he taught every math course at UNM. 5/5 stars.
This guy is a kick. Extremely engaging and animated. Able to apply mathematical concepts in a "real world" sense. He goes through material quickly and is a tough grader, but if you attend lecture, take notes and do the sample quizzes you should be fine. I never had trouble getting help from him outside of class. Best teacher ever!
Hilarious, kind, grades hard but precision is important for mathematics. Completely worth taking-- he's incredibly fair.
One of the best instructers at UNM. This is my second time having him. I can only hope he keeps teaching the upper level classes like Math 314 & Math 316.
He was really helpfull when it came down to hw. Test are challenging at times if you dont know certain derivatives or antiderivatives.
Kevin is absolutely amazing. I had him for Math 264 (calc3) He is a little crazy but will explain everything in a very clear way. He is very helpful outside of class as well. His is probably the best professor I have had yet at UNM
Kevin is a great math prof and I'm happy I had him. He teaches from Math 111 (math for elem. teachers) to calc 3 and he is amazing at all of them. He is helpful, albeit a little strange, and doesn't get frustrated if concepts take longer than normal to sink in (unlike other math profs at UNM...) He's great! I highly recommend him.
Kevin's a very dynamic, intelligent, and exciting lecturer. Never boring. Very responsive to questions and helpful. Though hw is not required he encourages his students to try hard and to ask questions. Very approachable and one of the best professors at UNM! I would take a math class with him again given the opportunity!
Kevin is a great prof. I haven't taken math for 3 yrs + and this is a tough class, but kevin was really clear and easy to understand!
The only complaint is the hard grading on tests and hw and the option to retake tests. Otherwise, a great math teacher, funny and hilarious.
Kevin knows his stuff front to back. He is very clear in teaching the content and uses a lot of real life examples to help clarify what you are doing. He also has a sense of humor. His class was very enjoyable. Overall he teaches the content pretty well, but do take time to use correct notation on Exams he is very picky and precise.
Kevin is a great teacher. He makes math class fun. He is very clear and gives real life examples. If I were to take another math class, I would definitely take it with him.
Burns is by far one of the best professors at UNM. He is quirky and very humorous. He tries to put math into real world perspectives and it helps a lot. He is great at answering questions and takes a genuine interest in his students. I struggled A LOT before this course and now I'm loving math. Would highly recommend this professor!!
Professor Burns, or Kevin as he prefers, is an excellent professor. I would take another math course with him. Like many people I have an aversion to math, but he is helpful and very knowledgeable. I have visited him at the tutoring tables for my econ classes, and he is still glad to help.
horrible professor! DO NOT TAKE! He will put you down if you ask questions and is very rude. He grades impossibly hard. No extra credit opportunities and grade is dependent on tests that are worth 70% of grade. Burns writes so small on the board that you cannot read it and refuses to write bigger. worse math professor!
The worst professor I have ever had. Tells me I am wrong on the homework and then goes on to say that I am copying the answer. Even with tutoring his stat 145 course is darn near to impossible. Horrible horrible horrible.
Kevin was an amazing teacher! Math 111 was one of the funnest classes I have taken. He's very clear, and shows you how to do everything. Keep up with the homework, and study for the tests. Go to class! Pretty easy if you do all of that. :)Highly recommended!
Not only is he funny and interesting, his lectures are clear, not boring, and full of insightful examples. Reviewing notes is very helpful in studying for the tests. Best math professor at UNM!!! Prepared me well mathematically for engineering classes.
Hands down the best math teacher I have ever had. He covers EVERYTHING and provides examples so you're never left with attempting to learn on your own. He is very interesting and willing to help. I wish he could teach all of my math classes.
Kevin was a fantastic teacher, and although I don't need anymore math classes for my major, I'm seriously considering taking another from him as an elective credit. As long as you pay attention in class and do the online material, you should get an A in the class. Would definitely reccomend.
Kevin is the best math teacher at UNM. His lectures are hilarious and very easy to comprehend, and he makes Calculus very applicable to everyday life. He gives you everything you need for his exams, and is a very fair grader. If you have the option of taking a class with Kevin, do it! You won't regret it.
His test problems completely reflect the homework questions. He takes time to explain things clearly. Pretty fun professor and makes class interesting.
Burns is such a great guy! I was afraid of him at first, he's from Brooklyn, but he's really easy going. Write down every single example, he will go through them many times for clarity. His tests reflect in class notes and the homework. He is one of UNM's best over all. I really enjoyed his class.
Most material is straight out of the book but Kevin's passion for the subject and passion for teaching help the student understand the material and identify "tricks" and also material likely to be on the tests. Reading the book prior to class maximizes instructor value. Kevin is serious about teaching math but also has a good sense of humor.
Good Lecturer. He teaches mostly through example. Tests are tough but not the end of the world tough. Will clarify any questions that come up
Kevin is an okay teacher. I wouldn't like to take him again. He is very particular with notation and will deduct for the smallest errors. Overall, I really don't like his teaching style because he rushes through subtle things that often come up over and over again and elaborates on things that don't really matter all that much.
This professor grades too hard. He has made a way to put his biased view into math because you can get the right answer and still get the question wrong. Also I think he is a bit too fast with explanations. If he didn't tell bad jokes or pointless stories he would not need to rush. Definitely wouldn't take him again.
Kevin is a great teacher. He doesn't waste time trying to hammer in concepts and instead spends most lectures teaching through example. If I could I would take all of my math classes with him.
Goes over the concept once or twice, then goes through a lot of examples and practice problems. You'll do well if you do the readings before class. Tests are written by him, homework (90% from the textbook) is the same in all calc classes so you can't do anything about that.
Great teacher, would highly suggest taking him, especially if you struggle with calculus like I do. He's funny, and clearly explains his concepts and makes sure you understand it. Homework every week, but much better than having to take quizzes.
He gives plenty of examples but they are usually way easier than the actual homework. He is extremely helpful if you actually go ask for help. Definitely a tough grader on the homework.
Kevin is very helpful and does a great job of explaining things and keeps things entertaining. I had taken Stat the previous semester and had to drop because I wasn't doing well. I took it the next semester with Kevin and got an A.
Good at teaching but is quite rude. I wouldn't take him again.
Great teacher that always understands and helps you out
Absolutely amazing teacher. It's like watching a comedian teach a math class - it's great. It's been so long since I was in a class and wasn't looking at the clock constantly due to boredom. You will learn and be entertained. Burns is by far one of the better teachers here at UNM.
KEVIN IS AWESOME! He sounds like he did hardcore drugs in the 60s so he is super chill. Plus his lectures are awesome and he always spends a whole day for review on tests and a whole week of review for the finals. He is so good and very smart and helps you learn very fast. TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU CAN!!!!!
Absolutely the best instructor for 160 series calc classes. He doesn't teach them very often so don't pass up his class if you have the chance!
Amazing teacher overall. He is obviously excited about what he teaches and will take the extra effort to share it with you. His lectures are a bit fast paced due to the amount of material, but will make sure he covers everything important. Covers the concepts well and provides many relevant examples. Would 10/10 recommend this teacher.
Kevin Burns is such a great person, he's understanding and funny. In addition to that , he is a very goo teacher; however, he is a very tough grader and he expects you to write everything in a specific way or otherwise he will take points off.
Kevin was great, he is funny and light-hearted. The only thing is that you have to stay on top of the online homework, but I never used my math book once.
Kevin is the best math teacher I've ever had. He is very specific about notation, but math, as Kevin likes to point out, is a language and it must be written correctly. He cured me of some bad habits quickly. He's from Brooklyn, so he might come across as rude or condescending, but he loves his students and is very happy to help you when you ask
This class is HARD and I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB test. Professor Burns just does examples and equations on the board without ever explaining any of it. Lectures are extremely confusing and notes are extremely disorganized. I was told that all Calc classes at UNM suck because they're trying to weed out the engineering majors.
He explains things decently, however, what I have experienced from him, was that he goes really really fast. If you miss something or don't quite understand something, he doesn't explain it well when you ask, and then he moves on, again going fast. He does examples, which is nice, but when the homework comes, it's so different from the lecture.
Yes, I worked really hard in this class for my grade, but my success in calculus I attribute mostly to him. He's a stickler for proper notation, as others have said, but you learn as you go, and he will tell you MANY TIMES how to do it correctly. He cares a lot about his students, and is hilarious to boot. Very smart guy who just LOVES math.
His class was by far my favorite. It was overall easy, and if you put in the work, study hard, and visit him during his office hours, you will pass. He is a stickler for perfect math notation because as he states explicitly, Math is a language, and it needs a subject, verb, and an object. Follow his guidelines for in class and tests to pass!
Calc II difficult either way. Amusing and meaningful lectures, really strict on notation, but you are told in advance and doesn't matter if answers are correct. Martinez and Berkopec good choices.
Really tough class (Math 163), great lectures, must put in all your effort (difficult with full 17 credit hour load). Tough grader for sure.
As can be expected, Calc I was a tough class, but Kevin does lots of examples in class which helps. As mentioned in other reviews, he is a stickler for notation, so make sure you show all your work and don't forget to write any symbols, even if they seem insignificant.
Burns is one of my favorite math instructors I've ever had. He's hilarious, and provides plenty of examples during lectures to help everything tie together and make sense. He's relatively strict on correct notation and homework but its only because he cares and wants you to succeed. If Burns was available for my next calc course I would do it!
Kevin is one of the better teachers in the math department. He is very good at explaining things. His tests (that he writes) are reflective of the material. The other tests are written by the math department, and he prepares you for them. The subject, in general, is pretty hard so I would suggest taking good notes, doing the homework, and reviewing
He is very fast pace, you need to have a good background in math to pass.
He's a good teacher but the class is a little tough. He grades of homework questions from the book and a few quizzes and tests.
The professor himself was good. The class was hard because he went very fast during lectures not stopping too as questions as well as he didn't give good feedback on homework, and tests. It was hard to know what I was doing wrong.
Prof Burns is a very good instructor and can be helpful, if you are willing to study. The class is a bit difficult and fast paced, but he tries to provide a lot of examples in class itself. His exams are decent (most of the questions are from the book itself), but remember the final exam can be tricky. Also, he is a tough grader as well.
I have no doubt in my mind that Kevin is a great person. However, he is an extremely tough grader and teaches very fast. He's very picky with the way he wants questions answered, even if the question did not specify how to answer. He's very pretentious and expects students to see what he sees when solving problems. TL;DR You'll be teaching yourself
Kevin is a great teacher. His lectures are generally fun and he makes a lot of jokes. The tests he gives are reflective of what we do in class and in the written homework. I would 100% take his class again
Calc 2 is definitely going to be a difficult course no matter who you take it with, but Kevin is a solid choice. He is a pretty tough grader whos very particular about notation, and his lectures can feel fast paced at times, but hes a friendly person and prepares you for the exams. He also likes to tell jokes or little stories at the start of class
His instructions are always clear, and I find this very important for math courses. Best math professor I have had so far.
Kevin is always clear and does not mind stopping to explain and answer questions. He will identify your learning style and make sure to different his instruction to address different learning styles.
Kevin is very clearly passionate about what he does. I personally struggle with math and found that attending class was super helpful in understanding new unfamiliar topics. He is very approachable and definitely would take another class of his.
Kevin Burns is the best math professor I've taken thus far. He clearly loves his job and genuinely cares about the well being of his students. In terms of grading he is a relatively tough grader but allows for partial credit even if your answer was incorrect. Highly accessible outside of class and extremely knowledgeable. Cannot recommend enough!
Kevin is amazing. He is very knowledgeable but also a great TEACHER which can be really hard to find. He cares about the subject and the students. This is one of the best classes I've taken and I'm excited to take more from him in the future.
He is very passionate about teaching. His reviewing classes are very helpful in exam. Nobody in the class can match with his energy and that really motivates me to be attentive to class. He has clear grading criterias and answers the questions whenever asked.
One of the best professors you'll take. Lectures involve detailed examples (that usually help with homework). He is very passionate about teaching and knows what he's talking about. The only thing I'd warn about is that you need to be very careful and pay close attention to your answers on exams. Small mistakes add up very quickly when he grades.
First and foremost Kevin is a very passionate professor. He knows the materials very well and is very supportive of students. Beware that the homework load is quite heavy and exam reviews are created by the math department, not the instructor. If you pay attention in class you'll pass just fine. Critical on notation and arithmetic during exams.
He is just awful. He humilaites you if you don't understand or ask questions. When I asked questions he would give sarcastic answers and roll his eyes. I didn't learn anything becuase I didn't feel like asking anymore questions. He is extremly picky and his way of teaching is by assuming you know half of the material of the class already.
Doesn't teach, he only uses examples, but no notes to help me learn.
Kevin is a quick-witted and extremely funny teacher. He is fast-paced and doesn't waste a single minute of his lecture, and often teaches more than what he needs. He taught many nuance ways of doing basic math problems faster. I recommend never missing a lecture, though, because you will quickly fall behind.
Very well instructed course. Lectures are very thorough but leave little time for questions. Make sure to attend office hours or help sessions.
Professor Burns's grasp of effectively teaching students math seemed shaky at best. Lectures were often glossed over or explained in a confusing manner. When students asked for clarification, instead of receiving helpful explanations, we were often met with impatience and dismissiveness. This created an uncomfortable learning environment.
Taught material properly, made it exciting to learn and was always open to questions. However, very strict about grading and took points off for simple things.
