Nothing to say, maybe THE best instructor on campus...Personally I miss him!!
Very very easy. Could have been harder and gone at a faster pace maybe? But the great thing is that he was so understandable. By far the most helpful and practical math course I've taken.
good teacher, goes slow for students to understand, broad math class, sometimes boring but overall good class and good teacher
He is the best teacher i've had so far. He is good in explaining things, giving more examples to understand the concept better. Very good at what he does. Knows his subject very well. I recommend him to everyone.
If you want to sit in a 4 hour class watching him play games and constantly thinking about how your time is being wasted, TAKE THIS CLASS! ... easy but needs to speed it up.
One of the most thorough teachers I've ever had. You'll definitely know whatever subject he's teaching, but at the cost of a slow pace. I'd take him again if I could.
Great professor!
Kevin Chouinard is the easiest math teacher at NOVA's Loudoun campus...he is willing to help you with anything...explain anything...understand anything...and teaches at a moderate level...his class is very enjoyable and EASY...and the way he teaches makes you not hate math too much!
Very very good teacher most definitely one of the best the Northern Virginia Comm. College has to offer! Would definitely reccommend to take this class!!
Professor Chouinard is the best Math professor NOVA has to offer. I got an A, my first A in math ever. Take him, you will pass. He's fun, entertaining and makes even math okay with his slide shows and stories.
I first heard about him my roommate took 2 of his classes and came home raving about him. Mr. C has a knack for presenting math in a very clear and concise manner, and his power point presentations are more then helpful when trying to understand a problem that you might otherwise find daunting.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Great guy.
Good teacher overall, lectures are excellent, tests can be tricky. you definitely have to put your time in for this class but if you do, you're sure to end up with a solid B. only negatives are: doesn't give tests back quickly, which can be annoying, and doesn't give extra credit.
Good Job Mr C.
I love this teacher. I will not take any math if my math teacher is not him. He is devoted to his job and makes sure the students understand everything.
You will understand math if you take him. Excellent teacher!!!
Don't ask a lot of questions... just take him~!!
He really tries to make everyone to understand. I loved him his really nice and cute guy
Can't really call it "easy" since it is calculus, but he does his best to make it as painless as possible. It doesn't hurt that he's absolutely adorable. Overall a great teacher.
you can never find a better math teacher then Kevin.loudoun has the best math teacher, but doesn't offer high-level mathematics,so I have to go to other campuses to take other math classes.I dropped many math classes since other math teacher have no match for Kevin.I waited for semester after semester, wishing he would teach the math I need, but :-(
He's OK
Excellent teacher. Uses powerpoints slides very well, and takes problems step by step. Will slow down or help you if you don't understand anything. Grades very fairly.
great math teacher! I had taken him for calc II and i just finished calc III. he grades very fairly, takes a lot of test questions from the text book, and tries hard to make class interesting and easily comparable to everyday things. do your homework and you will succeed in his class. great teacher though, i wish he taught more high level classes.
Great teacher
This guy is good!
It's obvious that Professor Chouinard is highly intelligent, and more importantly he's very skilled at explaining the material at a level that anyone can understand. On top of that, he's professional and good-natured. Highest recommendation.
Great professor, very clear, makes learning easy.
I have taken a lot of math classes with him. He is the kind of teacher that gives you an excellent lecture and you don't need to read the textbook the do the homework.you will be so relaxed if you take him. I'm out of NOVA, and I miss him.
He substituted for Karen Barr's class for a day and he is AMAZING! 5 minutes with him in class was the equivalent of 75 mins with Mrs. Barr (AVOID her, btw). Even a few students in our class were BEGGING him to teach our class from now on!
i had him for an online course and he was great. he's a motivating guy and takes the time to help those who don't understand the material. good guy, i highly reccomend him.
Took his MTH286 via ELI. Excellent class, superb on-line quality. Crystal clear presentation. Exams and grading very fair. No homework, but each lecture is followed by an online quiz. Great textbook. Prof. Chouinard is very approachable (via email) but the online discussion forum is where the real action is. Highly recommended!
I took Math 151 with him online, and I was real nervous about taking a math class through the internet. I soon learned that he is an excellent teacher who knows his stuff. Loved him!
Very good online class - slides are better than the textbook. Teacher teaches wonderfully - even ONLINE! I would definitely take him for math again if I needed to. AWESOME TEACHER! Can't say enough good about him!
He's good. just take him and don't ask too many questions.
He was great! he was so helpful and his powerpoints were extremely clear. I studied based off the powerpoints, i never even opened the book... I took the online class and it was great. homework was easy to do (on mathxl) and he always answered your questions quickly
Great course to take online. The MathXL homework program is very easy to use and the tutorials help alot; I wish all math courses utilized this program. Prof. Chouinard answers emails quickly and is eager to help. Great professor!
i have had this professor twice online. he breaks the class down into manageable chunks, with weekly hw and quizzes. exams arent hard, mainly because the rest of the course is broken down in such a way to be easy to learn. online presentations are super helpful
I was a bit nervous since it was 15 years since I took a math class. I took his online class and it was very easy to follow. He explained things very well and followed it up with homework in the book and online. The way the class was laid out and how he taught is what made it easy. I highly recommend this professor for online math class.
He really didn't teach ANYTHING, but it was an ELI course so it was to be expected to some extent. MathXL was a GREAT teacher though! haha
Great Professor, very smart and very helpful with answering questions on Discussion Board. I hope to take Discrete Math and Topic in Differential Equation with him sometimes next semester
If you are a good student don't take him , All the tests are multiple choices .
He is a great professor. I am horrible at math and bombed the final because i didnt have time to study and still got a high C. great class he his flexible with homework and deadlines wish he taught 152.
The best ELI professor I have had and THE best professor I've had at NOVA. His weekly quizzes are not "easy," even though they are multiple choice. However, they are fair and pertain to the course material. His powerpoint lectures are AMAZING. Crystal clear, reasonable in length, and miles better than the 90's videos for other courses. TAKE HIM.
Terrible online teacher, never contacted you at all and graded strictly. I did well on all the online assignments but did not on the tests since I am not a good test taker- a good teacher would have communicated in some way, offer to boost the grade or at least inform you, but instead I was failed without second thought due to conservative grading.
took this class online; all 4 tests were open note (you basically have the answers for the tests); passed this class with an A; he does reply to your e-mail but respond a few days later;he has discussion board on BB for students to leave questions about hw and students from your class will reply (which counts 25pts of participation);TAKE HIM! EASY!
Nice guy but hard teacher. No notes for any of his tests or calculator!Took his class online. 60% of class is based on 3 test at testing center.Hard tests and lots of memorization of formulas.
Great instructor. I was awful at Math. He was so very helpful.
took this class online;EASIEST math class ever!!! You're allow to take a 'cheat sheet' with you to ALL of the exams. There are quizzes online and they're all based on the notes. If you want easy math class, take him online!!
Very sweet and a great professor. I hate and suck at math, but he made the class interesting and easy. Allowed us to use notes on tests. Always asks the class if we have any questions. Gave a lot of time to do homework on mathxl. I really recommend him if you're not so hot in math. He's really understandable & shows great examples. Take him :]
Most knowlegable and helpful teacher I've had at NOVA.
Taking his ELI course. Absolutely recommended. Very clarified online presentations for each chapter and easy quizzes. Always get to answer questions on the Bb in time.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! Knows that hes doing and will help you out with anything. Doing your homework and participating in class will get you an A. Notes are clear and ex termly helpful:)
I have taken several ELI classes and it was like I had NO TEACHER at all - just a list of assignments and a textbook. But his online class was great! He teaches, and then answers questions. What a nice difference! He grades fairly, and doesn't make you memorize formulas that you will probably never use again.
The Smarter, very well organized, sophisticated, helpful, and has satisfied answer for any question. It is not easy to receive A in his class; however, it is not difficult if you pay attention, study and do your homework. Taking his class made it easy to take A in 241 MTH summer class.
Great teacher. His format for the class is very straight forward. All assignments are clearly laid out in the syllabus. The weekly quizzes, midterm, and Final are very similar to the weekly HW so there are no surprises. I recommend taking him for Linear Algebra!
He is so nice and helpful. One of the best teachers I have had at NVCC. He actually cares that you learn and will go out of his way to teach you a easier way until you get it. He also got upset with me for missing class/being behind, and I am so glad he did. I would have been so behind if he let that slide. He seemed genuinely concerned for us.
Great teacher. He knows what he's talking about and makes sure everyone understands. Doesn't go too fast and tries to provide clear examples of each concept. Responds quickly to emails. Easy to talk to and all around great guy. I would highly recommend any of his classes.
Great professor. Do not buy the book we didn't use it once... He goes over homework questions every class until everybody understands so he's very helpful. If you want an easy class take him, but if you actually want to learn math then don't
Class is based on Math XL (homework and quizzes).Dont buy textbook. like any math class in order to understand you have to go to class but he does not make it mandatory. clear examples and goes over homework. Allows you to use cheat sheets in exams. Overall he is a great professor! Take his class
His presentations are crystal clear, which makes it easier to understand all the complex concepts of discrete math. The quizzes and exams are easy if you follow the instructions and do the homework beforehand. Active participation in discussion board is important as well; the peer students will definitely help you a lot. I highly recommended him!
He is great, teaches old school in that he lectures, involves you in lessons and gives you partial credit on tests. I am an older adult who chooses my math prof very carefully because I suck at math. I would take him again in a heartbeat!!
1st OFF, he's NOT hot :) 2nd, AMAZING professor. If you suck at math like me, he teaches it like you're in first grade again. VERY clear, minimal HW. 2 tests, one final. Can use a cheat sheet on all. I have never gotten an A before so my grade speaks for itself. More than that, I actually understand the stuff without extra tutoring or studying.
Amazing prof. Presentation are clear he explains the concepts very well, quizzes for each two sections, midterm and a final, they are not that hard if you do all the hw. You get to use a cheat sheet on all exams. Amazing Amazing prof. def take him, you wont regret it. I would take another course with him, if he is offering higher math classes
Great professor, I took ELI class, if you do hw you will be fine. Similar questions on the exams. Allow to take Cheat sheet with you to all exams. You can write anything on cheat sheets.
I was NOT looking forward to taking Business Calculus but it was required. Professor Chouinard was AMAZING! For a super hard class regardless of the professor, you can't pick a better one to ensure your success! Quick to answer and very helpful. Doing the assignments on MathLab was the key. HIGHLY recommend this teacher.
Prof. Chouinard made learning Linear Algebra online a breeze. He teaches using audio + powerpoint slides, working out problems khan academy style. It's better than a lecture because you can pause, work through the problem on your own, and replay as many times as you want. Reading the textbook was important, but it was great to have those videos!
ELI Class. Participation in the group discussion is part of your grade, and is actually useful. He answers questions on the discussion board and email quickly. As much as I could ask for from an ELI instructor.
Since it was an online class i did not have aface to face lecture. He did have audio powerpoints that were amazing. Amazing teacher. I got a low grade i ln the class because i did not take the quizzes seriously. Since i did not think they were going to be a big chunk of my grade when in reality they were. Test you could bring a paper of notes

his powerpoints were ok and test were hard and he doesnt help you out when you email him. quizzes were worth a lot.
This is one my favor professor of all time. I usually don't like online classes but Dr. Kevin Chouinard made the class enjoyable. He covers all the materials using video presentation. The presentation goes over plenty of examples. But it's must to stay on top of schedule. and you have to do weekly homework in order to pass the class.
He is very professional instructor. I had a great experience with him. His lectures are very clear. His exams are very straight. It is easy to get A if you did your part.
Same person who took him for both linear and discrete. Once again, very simple structure. This was 16 weeks. 2 tests, 1 quiz per week, discussion board participation, and applications project are how you earn your grade. Sheet of notes can once again be used. Applications project is not very difficult and is an easy 50 points. Take him
I really enjoyed this class. His lectures were the perfect pace and very clear. I felt like I was able to learn alot of details that I may have not understood as well if it weren't for the ability to replay the lectures. The discussion board helps a lot and the tests reflected everything we learned. The homework was a manageable amount. Great prof
Professor Chouinard's online PowerPoint lectures are AMAZING. The book chosen for this course is great by itself, but after watching professor Chouinard's PowerPoint lectures, reading is a breeze. While there aren't usually many HW problems assigned, some can be computationally more difficult without a calculator, and other more conceptually.
Not a good experience. I felt like the material was watered down. If you take this class online then you have to do a lot of self learning. I personally felt like I was not challenged enough and sometimes instructor takes a long time to respond to email. I heard it's better to take 285 at the MA campus.
Great professor, graduated from UVA. But when comparing this course with UVA's course it seemed much different. This course was really easy, probably too easy. Not much I will be able to use in the real world. Needs more computer science aspect.
Took this class online. Quiz every two sections, midterm, and final. Participation in the discussion board-10%, exams -20% each, quizzes -2% each (total of 30%), application project -20%. All in all, a good prof. Very understanding if I needed extra time to complete something, as long as I caught up. Easy to keep up or get ahead. Okay lectures.
The tests are fair and somewhat easy; they're extremely similar to the quizzes. I'm taking his course in 8 weeks right now and it's not too bad.
Dr Chouinard is amazing. His online lectures are awesome and is generally good with feedback. Putting in lots of time in quizzes is beneficial. HW is optional but is very helpful in understanding the concept. Altough the textbooks were a bit disorganized. It is test heavy but if you understand the HW, exams are a breeze.
If you really want to learn linear algebra then I don't suggest taking him or the NOVA online class. He doesn't go that deep into the material and the project is way easy. If you really want to learn linear algebra then I heard there is a prof at the MA campus that will teach Lin. Alg. at a deeper level. Your best bet is too take Lin. Alg. at MA.
Really easy class if you watch all of his lectures and follow the syllabus. There was 3 exams and multiple quizzes that counted as your grade. He lets you bring a sheet of notes to exams as well. The exams questions are similar to the quizzes and homework, so if you are good with those, you'll do great. His video lectures are nice too
DISCRETE MATH ONLINE *****DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!************* He tries to be smart on quizzes and exams to make you lose points. Trust me, if you want a C and below, go right ahead. Materials all over the place. Very hard quizzes every week. 3 EXTREMELY hard exams which you have to put extra, EXTRA effort to just pass.
Always helped students and provided practice problems.
Awesome professor, just finished his discrete class and it was great! 15 Quizes (30%), 3 tests (60%), and Discussion (10%). HW is optional but necessary to do well on the tests. Also, he makes is own audio lectures that go deep into the information you'll need to succeed and learn. Overall fantastic time with him and wouldn't hesitate to take again
This is the first time I did an online course. In terms of MTH 288 there arent any full 1 hr lecture videos for each topic so you rely on the internet and discussion board for help. He always replies to questions and try his best to help. He is more on the lenient side of grading. If you do the work and put in your best effort you should get an A.
Professor Chouinard is an excellent professor. I took him for both MTH 288 and MTH 266. The lecture videos that he provides are very helpful. He helps in the discussion board by answering questions for us students. Homework is optional so you don't have to do it. The 3 exams are very similar to the quizzes that are part of the grade.
He does not respond to emails and will not help. My email has still not been answered. There is no rationale for grades. He does not grade on time and you will never know why you got the grade you got. He did not grade anything before census date. Don't ruin your transcript.
Professor Chouinard takes forever to grade the exams and quizzes, and also does not respond to emails quick enough. This course is homework heavy and test questions are similar to the homework problems, but there are a lot of content to go through and a lot of formulas to memorize.
Takes him a while to grade things, but he is a fair grader. I took him online and the power points he puts up for each topic are terrible with them not being very helpful; They seem to be copied directly from the textbook. Be prepared to learn everything on your own. The homework on Cengage is good preparation for the tests.
I took his online course, there were very few graded things, Quizzes with 3-5 questions weekly, and the 3 tests made up our entire grade. Quizzes were multiple choice so no partial credit. He does let you make a piece of paper with whatever you want on it for the test, which was very helpful.
Average NVCC online course. Go into exams blind other than the quizzes you take. Learned everything on my own (that's why I chose an online course) but there were no study guides, just going into exams blind. Class ends in 3 days and has only graded first exam.Extremely slow grader and I need to know if I am going to pass or not.3 tests and 15 quiz
I knew going into this class that I was going to have to teach myself everything. Notes, HW and a quiz each week. There were a handful of discussion posts and one project at the end of semester and a midterm and final on lockdown browser. Professor Chouinard posted maybe 2 announcements all semester and is slow to grade discussions and the project.
Professor Chouinard is a good professor, but the rigid format of the online course he is teaching significantly restricts how he can conduct the class. Despite having to teach ourselves most of the material, he tried making things easier and was a lenient grader. This class was difficult, but he made it a lot more manageable this semester.
Professor Chouinard made the online class very organized and clear. He answered every email and made sure to make time to meet for any help needed. Took him for an accelerated online discrete course this last semester and NOVA needs more professors like him!
You basically have to learn from the hws. Exams were 60% of the class grade meaning you need at least 82%+ average on exams to get an A including a 95%+ on the hws, quizzes, discussion board. He is generous with the grading around all assignments including exams. The hws were on WebAssign. Also he takes a LONG time to grade assignments so be aware.
Exams are 60% of the grade - need 82%+ average on them plus 95%+ on other assignments. Homework on WebAssign is key. Slow grading, but generous. unstuck study was helpful for study prep.
I took MTH 266 through NOVA Online. Late assignments are not accepted, and no practice exams are provided. You will need to stay motivated and manage your time well. NOVA uses AI to monitor academic integrity even activity on Discord with masked IP addresses can be traced. Some students were caught sharing quiz answers in Discord.
