Very critical, but not helpful criticism. He wants things the way he wants them. No if's and's or but's. Period.
he is critical, and wants things his way. but bca students need to understand that working in this field is very demanding. you can't afford to screw up. so i think it's necessary. he knows what he's talking about, and is easily approachable.

****. This guy is egocentric, but at the same time afraid that the students might find out he isn't 8 feet tall. Petty. There are better teachers at this school who could take over this class.
not easy
Tough tests. It's a great class, and he's really enthusiastic about the subject matter. Prepare for a lot of memorization and short papers.
He really knows his stuff. Very enthusiastic about film history, especially the old "movie palaces." It helps to have good memorization skills for the tests. Papers for every movie you watch, not as bad as it sounds.

Corbet was a great teacher. If you are really interested in media, video, and film then he is exceptionally helpful. If you have no interest or just lazy, watch out, you can't fake you're way through his projects and tests.
tells you HOW TO DO projects. ZERO creativity allowed, meaning no improv! a great storyboard will get you a B-. The rest depends on continuity. this class rules, but only when you are shooting.
Kevin is a great guy. His classes are tough, but if you take school at all seriously, you should do fine. As for the people that don't care for him as a prof, they're idiots. They're the same people that thought Gigli was a cinematic masterpiece. If you want to learn BCA, take Corbett!

This class was a TON of work. And although Corbett is tough, he respects his students and is very helpful. You have to be willing to work, but I also respect him the most of my teachers and learned the most from him.

Went on to do pro work after his class. Had to re-learn everything because his ONE piece of video work wasn't enough to qualify him to teach. I was ridiculed for the bits of style I picked up from him. Other than that..... nope still don't like him.
Dr. Corbett does a very good job of teaching by combining lectures with movie watching. He is very enthusiastic about the subject, which really helped my learning experience. Lots of writing for this class. He grades fairly easily on the papers, as long as you write in the present tense throughout the paper.
Made us write five papers for a four day, one credit, class, including a ten page. He's cool, but I definitely wouldn't take him again.
He's a cool guy. Easy, so long as you take good notes and study them REALLY well. The book isn't worth reading b/c test is straight from his notes. LOTS of writing, but on interesting stuff. Helpful for developing analytical skills. He respects everyone's opinions and encourages discussion. Responds promptly to emails and is always willing to help.
Kevin was my favorite professor this semester. He is helpful and knowledgeable and he loves movies. You'll never use the textbook, and his notes are really good in helping prepare for the test. Prepare to write a lot of papers, but if you like movies, you'll do just fine in the class.
corbett expects a lot of work, teaches like its your job, dont buy the book.
Kevin allows for zero creativity, using his my way or the high way attitude. He feels he knows everything (as he brags about how he won the BEA screenplay competition), yet one can't help but wonder why he's not writing screenplays for a profession. Don't take him, I feel like I was writing worse after listening to his horrible tips.
The class work is easy...projects seem to pile up at the end so make sure you stay on top of your assignments.
Corbet is an awesome guy. He will say that you need the book, but don't buy it! The class consists of watching movies and then writing an analysis on them (he is very picky with these) and taking exams. He gives you a study guide prior to exams and it's all right from his notes! Do your work & you will be fine!
Professor Corbet is very passionate about the subject he teaches. I am very interested in this subject and he made it extremely enjoyable. His reaction papers i found very easy and he drops the lowest two. The exams are alright if you go to lectures and write what his power points say and study them. Great class and I recommend it.
I liked this class until the last month of the semester then the last two exams were 25 question 4 point exams, if you don't study for these it will kill your grade.
Learned a lot. Don't buy book. Always attend. Be there on movie days esp, because he drops the two lowest film analyses, but you'll probably have at least two mediocre-bad scores. After the two dropped ones, each one you miss is %4. Don't put the final paper off until the last minute. Sources can be hard to find.
DON'T go into this class thinking it will be easy or one you can blow off. Attendance isn't taken, but you need to show up for notes because the exams are STRAIGHT from them. Don't put off the final analysis paper! He's kind of a hard ass, but he is consistent and does what he says he will, and seems willing to help at least.
He has a huge ego problem, but he is also very passionate about film and loves to talk about it. The class is a lot of fun if you let it. The powerpoints are a little choppy, but you can fix them in your notes as you write. Take him if you can. Easy U.P. course.
I really enjoyed this class. He is a great professor and is very passionate about what he teaches. If you're going to go, really put an effort forth. He doesn't like it when people waste his time (and he really doesn't like when people sit on facebook and don't listen). Great class, Great Professor. I highly recommend both!
I LOVE KEVIN CORBET! He is a beautiful man. At first, I thought I wouldn't like him, but he is AMAZING. He is a great professor, he makes everything fun. If you come to almost every class you will do fine in this class. He is THE BEST BCA 288 professor. For real though, there are only two, and he is much better. He is also an AMAZING dresser!
cool guy, interesting lectures, passionate, wants to help, final paper is kind of hard but if you bring it into him prior to the due date he will check it and tell you what to do to get an A.
This prof is TERRIBLE! His notes are messy and are unclear. He is arrogant. Tests are impossible. He is no help. I made two appointments with him for the final paper, took all of his advice and still only got a 78%. He is rude and will point you out in class. If you have a a choice DON'T TAKE THIS PROF! Get. out. now.
HORRIBLE!!! his lectures are long and not useful for the tests, which are murder. he is really cocky and thinks hes the****. DO NOT take him.
This class was a tough one. the movies were great but you really had to dig in and analysis everything. Its better to take this class with a friend to compare notes with. He is cocky and the tests are 25 questions but a really specific on dates and names... It was a quite hard class.
he thinks he is the bomb and can be arrogant but you gotta love him because he's so ridiculous and for the way he dresses
YOU MUST ATTEND HIS CLASS EVERYDAY! Not for just the notes but also the movies. When studying for exams (usually 25 questions) make sure you look AND link years WITH names or events, or you will get 1/3 of his exam wrong. Papers are not long, only 250 word. He is very "crazy" about movies and he is always energetic.
I found the material very interesting and I loved the movies that he showed us, but his exams are awful. They focus on names and dates rather than concepts, and they are only 25 questions, so it's almost impossible to get an A on them. Also, the fact that he wears bow-ties does not make up for how full of himself he is.
Corbett is a good guy who loves to teach. His exams arent terrible. I aced 2 of them. Just attend class because it is actually pretty interesting.
I thought he was a good teacher and also pretty funny. I didn't like how the final paper was worth a fifth of the semester grade. I got a B+, cuz I bombed on that paper and I would've gotten an A. If you like film or interested in it, I would take this course. Just show up to class, take good notes and remember dates and people and you'll do fine.
He is a really good teacher, very enthusiastic about what he is teaching. You should definitely come to class everyday and DO NOT text or slack off in class because he will call you out. He will get in your face and won't hesitate to tell you to get out. BUT, he's a good teacher. Also, never opened my book and got an A-...you don't really need it.
Very interesting class but he is a strict professor. No laptop or any type of electronic use during class. The class in general was very interesting so it wasnt hard to pay attention and take notes. No textbook is needed as long as you go to class and write down everything in the presentation.
My all time favorite professor! You dont really need a book as long as you pay attention and take notes in class. DONT COME TO CLASS LATE!(you'll regret it)
Great professor, definitley know what he is talking about. But two things you want to make sure not to do in his class are show up late and get caught on your phone.
Interesting lectures. Don't even bother with the book- exam questions come only from his notes. Study EVERY DETAIL in the notes- questions are random. Memorize films and directors. Corbett is a good guy, but he can be kind of rude. If you're enthusiastic about film, though, you'll get along great. Don't be afraid to talk to him after class.
He takes his job way too seriously, in a bad way. He will tell you what time the class starts every class through the whole semester. You dont need the book but prepare to study 3 weeks of information only for a 25 question exam thats only 15 points. I would choose a different teacher if i was you
A lot of people will tell you to steer clear of Corbett, but I disagree. He is very strict with cell phone usage and paying attention in class and offers no exceptions or excuses for late/unfinished work but he is an incredible professor. He knows everything there is to know about film. I had no interest in film but came out with a lot of knowledge
I loved this class. Although there were certain times when it was challenging, the two hours always seemed to zoom by. Don't buy the book, you won't use it. Although attendance isn't mandatory you should go there, but if you go to class and actually listen there is no reason why you can't do well.
Dr. Corbet is my favorite professor at CMU! He's funny, but blunt and straightforward as well. He is very passionate about his job in every class, and I've had him for three different ones. BCA 508, Cinematic Screenwriting, is by far his favorite to teach. His PowerPoint notes are very well organized. Overall great professor!
He is one of the most opinionated and arrogant teachers I have ever had. He constantly blames students even when the problem is obviously with him.
Dr. Corbet is very passionate about what he does, however he grades extremely hard. It is a UP but he treated it as if it was a 4 credit graduate class.
DO NOT take this professor. He is not helpful, clear, or easy. This class is a UP 100 level course, and he makes it almost impossible to do well. Make sure you attend class because he won't post any of the notes online, and all tests are straight from his notes. His grading is ridiculous and I am retaking this class because of it.
Corbet is a huge arse, but I love it. His class is really easy. He makes a boring subject interesting and is pretty funny, especially when he yells at random people during class. Oh yeah and don't show up late and make sure your phone is on vibrate. He's bald.
This class is incredibly easy.Corbet acts like its hard but its not and you do NOT need the text book. tests are off his notes. There are reaction papers when you watch movies but as long as you go to class and listen its easy. He's actually really interesting to listen to. The final analysis paper is really easy i did it in one night and got an A.
Awesome! Corbett makes this class one you actually want to go to. No need to buy the book, just study the notes and you'll be set.
Corbet really cares about film, and you can tell that by the way he makes a scene when people are late. If you go to class, write down what's on the powerpoint, and watch the movies you will do fine. Corbet is intimidating, but the class is exactly what is on the powerpoint. DON'T BUY THE BOOK.
Dr. Corbet is very enthusiastic about the subject & is super nice unless youre late or use your phone. Attendance isnt mandatory but its hard to understand if you dont go. All of the papers were pretty easy but the exams were only 15 Qs so you had to study ALL of your notes since theres no study guide, which is a lot! I didnt use the book at all
The book explained the lecture notes in more detail so dont buy unless youre REALLY interested in film history. The test come straight from the lecture notes. The movie reflections are easy as long as you have good notes and actually watch the movie.
Mr. Corbet is a respected man by many, but not by me. Unfortunately, his syllabus in a way sets students up for failure. He will write for the assignment that you won't be able to write an analysis for a film if you missed the lecture before the film, and says that researching is plagiarism, which is completely false. In a way it is immatureunfair
Really opinion based when he grades, not a lot of points. Reaction papers after each movie comes straight from the notes, not too hard if you do them correctly. overall not a tough class but not a blow off, he makes you work for it.
Professor Corbett really is a nice guy, he just asks that you come to class and turn off your phone. He delivers the info very well and if you study (and go to class) you'll be fine.
He was really annoying and i dont respect him because sometimes hes just flat out rude. easy class if you go to lectures though
Some what clear notes, he explains them good but the way he puts them on the power point do not make any sense, show up to class and put your phone away and he will most likely treat you with respect, but hes a jerk to 35% of the people in the class, he needs to learn to respect the students and to be more helpful as an instructor.
Dr. Corbett is a really awesome guy that is very passionate about film and I loved talking to him about film after lecture sometimes. He made a lot of jokes in his lectures, which I thought made them better. This is not a blow-off course though, he will make you work. His feedback was also very beneficial.
Corbett is very passionate about his job and loves to teach about the appreciation and history of cinema. He doesn't post notes on blackboard so you have to go to class to get them or get them from a friend. You also have to go into watch the movie screenings or you'll be really lost.
This is honestly THEE worst class I have EVER taken at Central, mostly because of Mr. Corbett. He's the kind of teacher that takes everything personally. If you ask questions, he'll make you feel stupid just for asking and then won't answer what you've asked. Not to mention, the actual material covered is ancient. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS
Corbett comes off as an ass at first, but if you respect him and your fellow classmates, he will respect you. If you go to lecture and actively pay attention, you'll pass just fine. The assignments aren't hard at all.
Corbett is hands down my favorite professor at CMU so far. If you are taking a class where he is an option as a professor TAKE HIM!! Not only does he 100% love what he does, but he makes it so easy for you to want to learn. On the first day of class he seems intimidating, but he is so amazing. TAKE CORBETT ANY CHANCE YOU CAN HE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!
Corbett was cool. You definitely need to go to class and study your notes if you want to do well on his exams. It can get kind of dry but the movies are cool. Don't just take as a blow off class. You do have one really long paper but it isn't really graded that bad. You will have to write reviews after each movie you watch, otherwise not much hw.
This was by far my favorite class freshman year. He made a two hour lecture (almost always out in under an hour an a half) fly by. He made film interesting to someone like me who could care less about it. Show up, take notes, and study and his 3 tests for the year that are only 25 MC questions will be easy. Final paper not bad just time consuming.
He's a really funny guy who is incredibly passionate about what he does. If you're late he'll probably make fun of you a little bit, but it's all in good fun. Don't miss classes; you'll be really behind.
Words cannot describe how much I admire Dr. Corbett. I went into his class with a limited knowledge and interest in film and came out absolutely loving it. All of the films he showed were fantastic, and his tests are easy if you take notes during lecture. I really wish he taught more classes at CMU, because I'd take them all - he's THAT good!!
This is my second class that I've had with Kevin Corbett. I'll admit, he is tough and can be a bit rude at times, but he is more than passionate for what he does and knows so much about film. Truly an inspiration and his BCA 101 class is one of the main reasons I am a BCA major. If you like film, and are willing to put in the work, take Corbett.
i took his BCA 101 class and i was there almost every day and ended up with an E. He doesn't grade your papers he has his student assistant grade them and does not give you any feed back so you don't know how to improve them. I would not recomend this teacher he is very rude and for a 101 class it is pretty difficult.
You write reaction papers after every movie you watch, that is the only homework you will ever have in the class and the papers only have to be two hundred and fifty words. You only have to write one analysis paper and study for exams. I'd suggest this class, takes effort but its definitely passable and very interesting andattendance isn't required
Kevin Corbett was by far the best professor I've had yet at CMU. At first he comes off as kind of a jerk and super sarcastic, but it takes a little getting used to him. You have super easy 5 point papers and the exams are EXACTLY from his notes. If you go to class or at least make sure you get the notes, you'll get an easy A. Take this class!
I loved him and this class. He keeps the class very interesting. You must go to class to get notes that WILL be covered on the exams. the exams are very easy if you go over the notes and they are only 25 multiple choice questions. If you can't commit to writing a reaction paper 24 hours within the time of your film screening don't take the class.
He is very very passionate about this job. Very odd man, very loud, sometimes disrespectful but very passionate. If you can't hold in your laughter, don't have him as a professor. You'll be laughing at him every 30 seconds.
He is very passionate about his job, but I find his arrogant comments to take away from how amazing everyone thinks he is. He freaks out about people having their phones out in class like I've never seen before. His lectures are horribly long and if you don't care for film, you will have a very hard time paying attention.
very specific. VERY TOUGH GRADER. Kind of comes off as a jerk. 10/10 would recommend. Lectures are relatively long. Papers and tests aren't worth many points so precise and don't mess up. Only take if you're serious about film. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOK!
Corbett loves what he does and is very enthusiastic about the material. He presents the material very well and a majority of the test is from the lecture. As a result, class attendance is vital. The essays on the movies are really simple and graded easily. Only 3 exams and a final paper, while those are all easy, they are VERY important.
I honestly hate Corbett's class. The lectures are extremely boring and long. His exams are hard and are based off the notes. However there isn't a lot of homework or extra work involved. EXTREMELY boring and he is very loud and annoying to listen to. I wouldn't recommend this class!
He's really passionate about what he does, and that makes the lectures really entertaining. There are short papers after every movie (10 total) and you really need to commit to doing them right after you watch the movie. The exams are pretty easy, and there's only one big research paper due near the end of the semester.
He's great! super enthusiastic about the subject. You have to go to class and pay attention to pass. the exams are literally taken from the notes so you need to study and take notes. 10 400word responses to each movie you watch and one large research paper that he never really talks about so don't wait for him to introduce the paper before starting
he rounds a lot of grades at the end of the year. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!!! he doesn't grade anything his TA does which is kinda annoying but I ended with an A so can't complain. lectures are too bad, but somedays its hard to want to go to class. good guy, really enjoys what he teaches. take notes and get an A
I'm logging on just to tell you - DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK FR THIS CLASS. That aside, it is a 100pt class, so 1pt 1%. that being said, every point matters. His exams are easy, but don't blow them off. Make sure you show up every day, or you will be behind.
Honestly, not a terrible class. Corbett can just be a bit much, but if you go to class and take the notes and write the papers you will be fine. He was not my favorite, but it was an easy GPA booster if you do the work.
Every other day is a lecture, and the other is a movie. if you pay attention you will get a good grade on the responses and the exams. You really need to memorize dates and times and people a lot. He likes to run around the class room, but it helped keep me awake most of the time.
Tough tough grader. Lectures can be alright one day but boring the next. A lot of papers, a lot of writing. Tests aren't easy if you don't study or listen to the lectures. If you want a 101 class that you can skip and pass, keep looking.
I attended every class and made quizlets for every exam and only managed to get a C. He's passionate about the material and uses the full 2 hours to cram as many notes in as possible. Considering that there's 10 papers it should be a writing intensive but it's not. THE CLASS IS ONLY OUT OF 100 POINTS!! Do not recommend.
Good teacher. Extremely hyper and loud. There are a lot of small reaction papers after each movie that you have to do and one big research paper at the end. Make sure you go to class that is where all his notes are he does not post notes. Do not miss class. Go to class, take notes and do your work, you will get a good grade.
Go to class EVERY single day for the notes because the notes in his class are what will give you the answers to the exams and reaction papers. 10 movies and a paper after each one due the next day. Only 100pts but a lot of work. Big analysis paper but only 15 pts. Drops lowest reaction paper at the end if you do all but it doesn't help your grade,
Not terrible, but he's a little sassy. He sometimes expects students to know everything because he already does. You watch a movie almost every week and write a one page paper each time, but they're fairly easy and out of five points. There are three exams and the final isn't cumulative. As long as you go to class and take notes, you'll be fine.
No extra credit. The instructor does not care. Over complicates material
Makes the lectures somewhat interesting. You have to write 10 little papers throughout the semester on movies you watch in class. If you come to the lectures, you'll do fine in the class.
Passionate about what he teaches and overall a great guy.
Corbett was the worst professor Ive ever had at cmu. He is not understanding and makes zero exceptions and he is a very hard grader. If you arent good at analyzing the films you will get a bad grade on each reaction paper. He expects everyone to get every single little detail about the film and he is not helpful.
Professor Corbett is very passionate about everything he teaches. He is a very hard grader and expects you to know everything I'm your notes. I wouldn't suggest taking this class because of the exams and the reaction papers in which are very tough to get A's on.
I registered his BCA625, and his severity was almost unimaginable. He was like a grammar teacher looking up anything he didn't like. In a word, I won't choose his class again.
Professor Corbett is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about film and screenwriting. This class specifically made me realize what I wanted to do in the BCA field. He's a nice guy and always willing to help if you put in the effort and time. It also helps if you're also passionate about film/screenwriting to succeed in his class.
There are only 100 points and most of those points come from response papers, which he grades extremely harsh. If you didn't have the exact same thought process as him while answering these papers you will not get 100 and he will send out an extremely passive aggressive email to the class, probably quoting your paper and making you feel so stupid.
This professor is pretty good and is pretty straight forward with what you need to do to do good. Notes are essential for response papers and if you don't get them you're probably not going to do well on them. All you really got to do is watch usually a pretty entertaining movie and give a 200 word response and have the occasional exam.
Kevin is probably one of my favorite professors at Central. Hes so willing to work with you on any papers and gives amazing feedback. Hes also very lenient with deadlines especially if he knows youre passionate about your work. I definitely recommend him if youre taking BCA101 or BCA508.
He is very stubborn when it comes to his essays. If your opinion is not the same as his for a certain topic, you may not get a good grade. He also is not the most respectful towards students. His class is pretty easy as long as you listen to what he thinks about a movie and write about that.
I think that Corbett is the kind of professor that doesn't really care about his students, and has more passion for the stuff he teaches than the people he teaches to. I've taken about 4 classes that Corbett taught, and in each one I'm more excited to leave than i am in any other class. He's a fair grader, though, and there's not too much work.
We were graded on 4 essays and 2 exams. He doesn't provide feedback on the essays unless you ask him, which I found annoying. I liked that we got a lot of freedom for the final paper and how passionate Dr. Corbett is on Queer Cinema. The two exams were really easy! You are not required to watch the violent films if it is triggering.
Professor Corbett is knowledgeable and passionate. While his teaching style may not connect with everyone, he's fair in grading and provides great feedback. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep.
