Great prof, uses lots of helpful examples.
awesome! if you're going to like philosophy he's the one that will make you
All I have to say is... FANTASTIC. YAY CORCORAN! (funny 2)
Anselm says: Next to God, Corcoran is the greatest conceivable being!
He's a helpful and funny guy and a good prof overall.
Hate philosophy, but must take, take with Corc!! I remember everything!
A great prof! Encourages discussion and gets to know his students.
Cool as a cucumber, sweet as a pickle.
he's only unclear because philosophy is confusing. otherwise he was great
Great. I thought I would hate a 3hr long night class for intro philosophy but I looked forward to it every week!
Fun guy who loves his students.
Philosophy is hard, but this guy makes it understandable. Nice guy, sincerely cares about his students, subtle sense of humor. I remember everything from this class (evidence of a good prof)
really great guy and a lot of fun
one of the few profs i kept in contact with long after the course was done
I had him last spring and consider him my favorite prof by far! Who else performs the most awesome MAGIC TRICKS whenever he thinks the class is getting bored? Really cares even when class is over.
Has favorites. Great sense of humor. Entertaining and intelligent, but could do a better job of listening carefully to students' comments and questions. Likes to make assumptions, can be insulting.
Great Prof. His favorites are students who participate. Is that a surprise? Get with the program, dude. I've never heard him insult anyone. He's funny, loves what he's doing and it shows.
He's a great prof! Great at explaining ideas and concepts and is enthusiastic about what he does. He loves what he's doing and it rubs off on the students.
Great Prof! Although Philosophy is confusing, he does a great job at trying to explain things. Tests aren't terrible, and hes super funny! Watch out for his magic tricks...=)
Great Prof. Really cares for his students. tough grader
cool guy, i only slept through 2 lectures. very interesting.
I thought I was going to hate this class, but I end up loving it. you can't find a better teacher to teach it. reading are hard to follow but once he explains it it's not bad.
I loved this class so much, it seduces you into wanting to become a phil prof. He is very very funny and class is never boring, although the material is challenging. I will always remember the day when he made my cigarette dissapear in my favorite shirt. The shirt wasn't ruined, A++
Super cool. The most fun class I have ever taken, and pretty easy too, if you go to class.
Definately a cool prof. Plays music before class to wake ppl up and get them talkin. Told me I was as smart as St. Thomas Aquinas once. lol. Really interesting and fun to listen to. Haven't fallen asleep once.
He is the best asset Calvin's philosophy department has, but he is an extremely tough grader. Expect to learn, but to work harder than you ever thought possible as well.
I thought I would hate philosophy. This is my third class on a T/Th schedule and I never fall asleep(except maybe once)He definitely almost makes me want to be a philosophy major.there is this annoying high school kid in my class though, but that's not his fault (and think he is annoyed by him too)
Great Prof. Sometimes our class is slowed cuz of the high school kid but other than that, great class. If only you could do something with a Philosphy major.....
I love Prof. Corcoran. He's a great guy and is really sincerely interested in whether or not his students learn. He is compassionate, gifted and also a great magician. For those of us who actually are phil majors, he is inspiring and for those that have to take phil to fulfill a core, he is a great prof to do that with!
Good, especially for in-class discussions, but a tough grader.
I really like this guy! He is rather entertaining and will take an entire class to explain things to you. Lots of reading, but it isn't that bad. If you can take this professor!
I loved Corcoran! my fav prof of the semester. I met with him 3 times about my paper, so very helpful and funny. A lot of reading and a tough grader but definitely worth it. He's a fan of the Simpsons and a magician...added bonuses
Awesome professor. Funny, engaging, but a difficult grader on papers. Send it in to him ahead of time by email, even two days before the due date. The comments help a lot.
Tough grader on exams. But I liked like him. He obviously loves teaching and is funny and interesting. I thought I would hate his class last semeser but ended up loving it. He's eally easy to talk to. He loves music and always has it playing at the beginning of class And he's cute to. Everyone I know who has had him for 150 loved him.
Awesome prof. Makes learning fun. Interesting and funny too. My favorite prof ever and my fav class this semester. Why hasn't this guy got a pepper? Probably becuz no one has seen him in the gym (I have!) and he wears baggy clothes to class and you can't see that under them he's nice to look at!!!
he was a really frustrating prof to me, especially in his grading. content and material clear and interesting enough, but when it came to evaluating, it was hard to ever figure out what exactly he wanted, or if he just was determined to give no decent grades. i enjoyed philosophy a lot before taking his class.
Funny guy, but not good teacher. He didn't really care what anybody else thought about the texts, just said what he thought then expects you to have every word he said memorized for the tests. Good thing is there's a take home exam, but there's a writing assignment every week.
This was probably the most interesting class I've ever been in. I didn't realize how simple he made philosophy until I went to an extra credit seminar... wow, don't take him for granted. Tough grader, but there's only 4 grades all semester and 2 are take home and easy and only one's really hard so it's still possible to get a good grade. great prof
I still don't know what to think about this guy. Some days I like him, some I don't. He's pretty crazy! He's very clear in the way he presents things. A little bit of a tough grader, but it's easy to tell what he wants in assignments. If you don't understand a reading, going to class will definitely help. So don't miss class. Every day is important
Corcoran is great! Really wants everyone to understand everything. Willing to answer questions, amuses us with magic tricks, and creates an interactive atmosphere. Take him if you can! Tests are somewhat hard, but you are only ever tested on what he has gone over many times in class. Do the readings and daily assignments - they really help.
Awesome prof... he is great, easy to understand and very interesting! I would recommend him to anybody! He grades pretty tough but he will help you in anyway possible...
An excellent prof! I was dreading this class, but Corcoran made it easy to understand. And he's funny and does magic tricks in class. The tests aren't too bad if you know the arguments well and write as much detail as you can. The final exam was a take home.
His class is VERY hard. Unless you are interested or majoring in philosophy, don't get his class! readings are bunch and hard. He is a hard grader.
Not an easy grader. Very fair though. No surprises with Corcoran. Does anything to help you. Plus he's fun, funny and very entertaining. My favorite class by far last semester. And if you get the chance, check him out with weights. VERY nice body! Meow.
Corcoran is one of the best profs I've ever had. Clear, funny, intelligent, passionate. He knows his stuff, he speaks clearly, and he made an intimidating class (honors intro philosophy) both challenging and interesting. Not an easy grader, but clear and fair, and very willing to help. I learned a lot.
An excellent teacher. Fair, helpful, and challenging.
Had him for 153, not an easy prof but very clear. He makes class fun, and he always makes sure you know exactly what he wants on his tests. I was never bored for one moment in his class.
He was definitely my favorite professor last semester. I HIGHLY recommend him. His lectures and discussions are very interesting and although his tests are mostly essay, it's all from class and his final is take-home. He is a great guy, and I learned a lot while having a lot of fun. Take him for PHIL 153!
He is my favorite professor. He is very good at making philosophy easy to understand and enjoyable.
Easy to understand, really cool
Great Prof. He loves to get the class riled up. The class itself is pretty fun and easy. He does a good job making the topics interesting. Weekly homework assignments are easy. He never will test you on something that you haven't discussed in class, so take complete notes. I would highly recommend this prof
Okay. Most people think he's the bee's knees. Likes in- class 'controversy' - half the time its artificially manufactured - and delights in proofs. Did I say he likes proofs? He LOVES proofs. 40% of your notes will be composed entirely of proofs. Ultimately a good prof, though.
Great discussions, although sometimes they took a long time. If you're taking metaphysics, I think you know already that the nature of the subject is challenging. You will have to form your own ideas; Corcoran cares that you think, not just write.
Wow BEST prof EVER. He made Philosophy so much fun and interesting I wish I could minor in it! He loves what he teaches and is passionate about his students. I can't say enough things about him he'd do anything for any of his students. TAKE HIM!
Love his class so far. My friends all had him and raved. I see why now. He's funny and interesting. Great music to start class. I read other students comments about his hot, compact body and they are all true to.
love the class. love the guy. he's stacked!!! not the easiest grader though. fun class.
Take his class. That's all. Don't even think about it.. just do it. Best. Class. Ever.
crazy man. does magic. tells jokss. lectures always more interesting than the readings are. I like him. And he's got nice biceps too.
Corcoran is probably my favorite prof at Calvin, and will likely remain that way. He is hilarious, clear, and helpful. I learned more in his 151 class than in any other class I've take in college. Get him if at all possible.
He is a wonderful philosophy prof and really knows his stuff. He really puts the subject into simple terms. I did run into a few problems with him though. He is not understanding at all if you have some sort of medical emergency family or personal issues that cause you to miss class. He lowers your grade for missing class no matter the circumstance
Did a magic trick that blew my mind. Material is beyond confusing, but he repeats what he wants you to spit back out on the tests. Used spark notes for every assignment and got an A.
Take good notes and pay attention! He moves at a good pace and is very clear. Energetic, funny, and helpful. Corcoran is very good at keeping the class engaged and will repeat things if you need them repeated. The subject itself is confusing, but he dumbs it down and does his best to make it comprehensible.
one of my favorite classes and profs at Calvin. Learned so much. It's a challenging class, but if you put in the effort, you will do well. He's an excellent teacher, understanding, funny and loves his students and job.
Great Prof!
He is a wonderful professor. He is engaging and seems legitimately excited about what he is teaching. Corcoran is great and should be taken at all costs.
Good prof for the most part. Not good at keeping to the topic at hand, which is both a blessing and curse. If you like quick feedback, beware. Your paper will take weeks to get graded! He is also not the best at explaining what he wants in a paper, which can get frustrating. Great for intro, but in the 200's, you might get corcscrewed (as they say)
Fantastic class if you want to learn something about philosophy. But be warned if you're trying to keep up your GPA. This class is a killer. Few papers which you should expect a C on if you're lucky, Corcoran rarely gives out A's. (As in, he claims once or twice a semester.) Not the friendliest guy, either. Great subject, not my favorite prof
Corcoran is great! His lectures are extremely clear and he uses real life examples to explain just about everything. He is a very tough grader when it comes to exams. You only have 4 grades so you have little room for error. Be sure to put time in and really invest in these topics because they're great. It's a great class and a great prof
i loved his class! i would recommend him for intro phil! you will love it! i promise!
HIGHLY recommend him. I loved this class. Learned a ton, laughed a lot.
I LOVED HIM! when you come across a teacher with a practically perfect rate on this site because you assume that the prof did it himself or whatever but kevin would never do anything like that. seriously, he was the best teacher i have had thus far (second sem freshman) and would recommend a million times over to take his class, nicest guy ever!!!
Great professor. He explains difficult theories well and makes sure that everyone understands. He's happy to have impromptu discussions. I hated it at first , but it grew on me. He is a bit opinionated, but he really tries not to share them. There's a lot of writing assignments and reading, but do the work, ask questions, and you'll be fine.
It is clear that Corcoran loves teaching and cares about his students' well-being. During midterms, he even took our entire class out to dinner. His expectations are very clear, so you are not surprised if you get a bad grade. He loves chatting with his students outside of class. He is understanding if you make your case and are a good student.
A really great prof. The way he runs his class is different than the other philosophy professors at Calvin from what I've heard. His class is very discussion based and he leaves lots of time for questions and debates. He also doesn't require participation which was great for me because I am a quiet person who just likes to listen.
Fantastic Prof! He tries to make it interesting, which is extremely helpful since it's philosophy. I had him for an online class, but the lectures posted were very helpful. He also had review sessions before each test to make sure that we understood the material.
Corcoran is the best. Not an easy course, but he's absolutely wonderful. Great lectures, super nice, and super hot. ;)
HE IS THE BEST!!! His lectures are amazing, not much homework or papers, and hist tests are all online. He makes philosophy more exciting than Harry Potter. I seriously considered changing my major to Philosophy while taking his class.
Honors philosophy with Corcoran was one of my favorite classes so far at Calvin. I learned a lot and he is really good at explaining the philosophy concepts.
Professor Corcoran is funny, and his 90 minute lecture is bearable. He expects you to always complete reading and relies on class participation. There is a 1 page paper due every week, but he is always willing to help during office hours ( which will boost your exam grades). There are a few extra credit chances during the semester.
Professor Corcoran is the best! He is passionate about his teaching, and even though his lectures are long, I looked forward to them every week! He expects you to read the material and write a response paper each week. He is hilarious and incorporates lots of class discussion into his lectures. I highly recommend his class!
Corcoran is a fair, gracious, and engaging instructor. He doesn't talk down to or belittle his students but works VERY hard to make ideas clear and understood no matter how long it takes. I appreciated his balanced and careful presentation of many of the challenging topics in philosophy. Felt like he cared about me even in an online course.
He is the best philosophy professor I've ever had. Fun lectures. His lectures are always the highlight of the day I have philosophy class.
Corcoran is great! I learned a lot and really enjoyed the material! He clearly and thoroughly explains everything. Just take good notes and you'll be fine.
I LOVED having Corcoran for Philosophy. He was funny, and he explained complicated topics over and over again to make sure we understood it. I genuinely miss going to this class. His tests were also online, as well as the exam, and the homework is just responses to the readings. If you have to take Phil153, take it with Corcoran!!!
he throws chalk so watch out, but, like take the class anyways, it's so worth it.
I like Corcoran as a person, and I also think he gets his ideas across to students in a clear, easy to understand way. The content of the course really wasn't that difficult if you took notes, but he is very harsh in grading essays. You have to make your arguments very clear because he will roast you if you are ambiguous in the slightest.
I am far from a philosophy major, but Corcoran made it enjoyable! I am a biochem major and was worried about philosophy ruining my GPA, but Corcoran is very clear about what he requires to receive an A. He is hilarious and every lecture was interesting. If you can get him for philosophy DO IT. Princeton Review ranked him in the top 300 professors.
He is a fantastic lecturer. But he doesn't post midterm grades or communicate clearly when homework is due.
Corcoran was amazing. I wasn't sure how the class was going to be, but it exceeded all expectations and I would totally retake the class!
Professor Corcoran was so fun to have for class. He was lively and was super passionate about what he was teaching. He encourages you to think about the subject and makes it interesting. Going to his class was enjoyable and I never dreaded going. He gives out weekly writing assignments, but they're short and easy to finish.
Honestly, you can read the powerpoints after class and pass it w/o taking notes. That's what I did.
Professor Corcoran is such a fun professor! Lecture content and notes are heavy, but as long as you listen well and participate in class, you should be fine! He is so funny, and the way he teaches will help you remember the content. Definitely take him for philosophy!!
I had taken his class over the summer as an online course. It was definitely nice to not have any papers, however, the tests were difficult and if you didn't understand his lectures or do in-depth reading it was basically hard to pass the class. I definitely struggled with the readings. Also heads up but he is a tough grader (very picky).
Professor Corcoran made philosophy interesting. He does not put up with any crap, but cares about his students. He really help me to think about suffering, God, and other things differently. The class is much better when you participate in the discussion and ask questions. His tests are hard, but doable if you pay attention to lecture.
Philosophy is supposed to be branched out with other peoples ideas, this class was taken within an objective point of view. It also all came down to a lot of arbitrary grading. Forewarned you do better when you don't try in this class, which doesn't make any sense. Plus you have a prof that has unclear expectations for you as an individual student.
The lectures are really heavy but everything you need is on the powerpoints. He is a veryy tough grader in this class because the material is so specific but one on one he's a really funny and relaxed professor. Just turn things in on time and put in effort and you'll do good!
Professor Corcoran is a great professor! Explains difficult concepts clearly in the lectures and loves it when students ask questions. Tests weren't easy but he gives clear expectations and is a fair grader.
Corcoran is an engaging professor who makes philosophy fun. Attend class, take notes, and utilize resources like ChatGPT and unstuck study to ace the exams. While grading can be picky, the workload is manageable. Definitely a class worth taking!
Fantastic class, great professor. There's many small writing assignments, but he is a very generous grader. The lectures are mandatory in order to understand class content. The class challenged a lot of my beliefs in a good way. Corcoran is an awesome professor, and I will be seeking out another class of his to take. GOAT
