Be prepared to do a lot of writing! Former reporter for ch. 8, he brings in tapes of his work which are fun to watch. Knows the industry backwards and forwards, not at all an academic. Best instructor I've had, hands down!
funny guy. you wont get this kind of teaching anywhere else. he has a lot of experience in the media.Great teacher.
He's hot. Look at all his chili peppers! He knows what he's talking about. Lots of experience in the field. Lots of homework- helps with in class assignments.
Inspirational!
Really great teacher! By far the best instructor i've had!! i've really learned a lot from his class
Best professor ever! I learned so much. Inspirational!
One of the best and most inspirational teachers ever. Lets you turn in work late. Always willing to help. Knows what he is talking about. Great, great professor. Lots of writing but well worth it!
He is a great teacher and respects students, making you feel that you are capable of doing well in the class. Lots of work but well worth it!
One of the best teachers I've had. Really improves your writing and wants to see you do well. He is helpful and makes a boring class fun. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
This class was very difficult to handle if you take it all day on Friday. I like Mr. Cox, but if you don't need it for your major I would say don't take the class, because there are SOOO many details involved in journalistic writing that it can become frustrating. If you DO need the class, then Mr.
Lots of work, but it pays off!--Definitely recommended to greatly improve writing skills and develop individual style, whether you need the class or not. He is by far the most influential professor I've had during my college career and I'm a senior at SDSU. That says a lot!
The best class I've ever taken at Mesa. Mr. Cox makes it fun and challenging at the same time; he is a good guy who really wants his students to take in everything and do well. If you want to improve your writing, are interested in journalism, or just taking it for your major, this is the class!!!
There is an amazing amount of homework. But it actually pays off. I learned more from him than any other English class I have ever had. Cox also uses every minute of class time to try and make us better writers.
Profesor Cox is the best. He might seem intimidating on the first day, but it's all just a part of the class dynamic. He is such a great teacher. I learned so much, not just about how to write great narratives/articles, but tips on how to get far in life (no matter what career you may (pursue).
Prof Cox is an awesome teacher! He knows his stuff, is super energetic, and is hands down one of the best profs I've ever had. Class is intense though, tons of homework and writing, but it's worth it in the long run. He'll definitely improve your writing.

This guy is the coolest teacher I have ever had! I wish I could take this class again! He is so chill and interesting and funny as I dont know what! If you have a passion for journalism I suggest that you take his class. I seriously have nothing bad to say about this guy!
I'll never forget Cox...
Professor Cox DEFINITELY knows his stuff!!! A GREAT teacher if you are serious about getting into the journalism major! One of the BEST teachers I've had. A ver informative class but it does involve A LOT of work @ the begining. Take this class if you want to learn some INTERESTING FACTS about journalism and the media.
One of the best teachers I've had. Taking his class will help you in whatever you choose to persue in life. A great teacher and very inspiring. Funny as hell too.
This guy teaches this class as if we are entering the news room when the semester is over. I don't have any interest in journalism. Taking class for requirement as advertising major. He's good if you are going to be a journalist but otherwise, the class is way to in depth and intense for an intro class. Cool guy, makes it fun but way too much work
This should not be a 3 unit class. Way too much work; would probably be ok if you had no life or any other classes; He also wants you to write how he would write and dosn't let you have your own style; this class had made my semester miserable; I enjoyed writing b4 him-he has made me hate it; also said speaker would be exciting; he was nice & dull
One of the best damn teachers I have ever had...helped me with all my work, was friendly and easy-going; and bears an uncanny resemblance to that evil doctor on Scrubs who calls Zach by girl names. Seriously a great teacher and a lot of work but you'll learn a lot in return. Worth it and a lot of fun
if you wish to be a journalist, this man will change how you see the world. one of the most inspirating teachers ive ever had and you will ever have. can't go wrong with him. has a great news voice! looks like steve carrell. AND YES HE DOES ALLOW YOU TO WRITE IN YOUR OWN STYLE. but before he does, makes you learn the ethics of journ
It's a lot of work but worth it in the end; He is enthusiastic, dynamic and inspirational; He knows what he's talking about; I only wish he were teaching all of the jounalism classes at Mesa; if you're lazy, don't waste your time or his; if you want to learn to write, Prof Cox is the best!!!
Absolutely the best;thoroughly enjoyed both his class and enthusiasm; this class is not for slackers...it is hard, but you learn a lot!!! A+ professor
BOW DOWN TO THE KING--Ch. 8 Reporter becomes teacher, Kevin Cox is the best teacher I've seen in four years of college and 17 yrs of school. He doesn't teach, he inspires. All should take. I went into his class a depressed mess and came out ready to take on the world. Cox should be teaching the teachers how to teach. Vio con dios.
"Last summer, I sacrificed the pleasures of the San Diego Beaches for about six hours a day in journalism 200." IT WAS WORTH EVERY SECOND. This class will allow you to grow as a writer (jounalistically). Professor Cox is an AMAZING and PASSIONATE teacher w/the Stephen Colbert wit! Best advice from him, "Be your own shameless PR."
This guy was the best teacher I have EVER had! I would suggest his class to anyone. He is the one teacher I have had that makes class interesting.
He tries his best to motivate his students. Class and work is fine. He will hold workshops at the end for your final. Take advantage of this. The class seems a little tough at the start but winds up beig thorough and easy.
This teacher is AMAZING! He wants everyone to learn and succeed and does it in a way that you don't really realize it. He doesn't try to be your best friend but you can't help but like him. A lot of work but WAAAYYYY better than State's class!
Great Professor. He will work you but your writing will improve no matter your skill. Most professors prepare you academically. Cox will prepare you to get a real job in the media industry. If you are a com major Cox is a must!
best teacher i've had. he got me published. he helped me jump start my career. he's not easy, but the class is worth it. and it's not boring at all. it's the most productive class i've had.
Great Teacher. He helps you out with everything you have ever had questions about when it comes to writing. He's a bit challenging but in the end you see why and its worth it so definitely take this class if you get the oppurtunity.
He is a cool guy. Very enthusiastic and passionate. He tries to keep class interesting at all times. BUT he assigns TOO much reading & HW...If you are very serious about journalism and have the TIME and discipline, go for it. A LOT, (maybe a little too much if you ask me) of work involved but you will definitely learn a lot.
Good Guy. A lot learned but extremely stressful because he assigns too much work outside of class. Stressful if you have a full load of other classes because this class is very time consuming. Should be worth 5units for all the extra work.
GAINED SO MUCH MORE INTEREST ABOUT ENGLISH AND WRITING! GREAT PROFESSOR!
This was by far the most valuable class I have taken at Mesa. Cox is a laid back guy with a passion for what he does. If you are interested in journalism, you absolutely MUST take his class. He'll give you real-world insight as well as possible real-world experience! Hard work, but if you enjoy writing, you wont mind. NO TESTS! Easy on attendance!
The best teacher i had in Mesa, GREAT GUY and very Funny, MUST TAKE CLASS, if u are interested in Journalism
He would be a bargain at triple the price. Take his class and become a more powerful writer.
Best teacher in all my 3 years of education. He's not only helpful in the classroom but in helping you land a job/internship. He knows the journalism field better than anyone else, he did tv, newspaper, and magazine. If you want to make it in the journalism world, take Cox! Don't past up this opportunity of a life time--you'll regret it if you dont
Cox is hands down the most dedicated professor I have ever had. He corrected my draft 9 times! His personality is a bit overwhelming but he is more than willing to help.
It is a rare occurrence at this level of higher education (community college) to find a professor so informed and dedicated to the success of his students. Overall what you put into this class you will get out of it. If you're not afraid of hard work and you give it your all, Cox will help you become a better writer.
English 101... I was lucky to have found such a great Prof. with the same weird sense of humor that I had. Very funny man. Great at teaching! He allows cell phones to a point. Helps you along the way. You will do good if you show up, pay attention, and get involved. Coolest Prof. At Mesa by far!
One of my favorites! A bit over the top, yes, but it keeps the class interested! Prof. Cox is a needle in the haystack! Really helps you learn. He will go over your paper with you until YOU are happy... an outstanding teacher, and a real genuine guy! Not to mention, he named his son after a rifle...how cool is that?!
Best teacher at mesa hands down. Very interesting person, genius when it comes to writing. I took his class over two years ago and i still feel he has been the best english teacher i have taken. Definitely take him with out hesitation if you have the opportunity
He knows what he teaches.
This teacher is awesome! He really knows his stuff. If your looking for an easy A this may not be the class for you, he grades pretty hard. The entire semester you work on your final project and he devotes a LOT of class time to working on the final, but he throws other homework at you to mix it up. I would recommend this professor to a friend.
He is super great! He believes in his students capabilities. If you take journalism seriously taking his class should be top on your priority list.Funny Guy.His ENG course is gruesome to an extent but you learn so much! May not seem like it at first but by the end of the semester you will have become a writing genius. :)
Kevin was a great teacher! I wish he offered more classes that I could take from him. He has a great personality and makes the class fun. He is very helpful, supportive, and definitely wants to see his students achieve success. I HIGHLY recommend taking his course!
Thought he was awesome when I took him for j200. Fast forward to upper div jour classes and I found out I hadn't learned a thing in his class. I felt really lost. My prof asked me who I had for news writing and when I answered prof cox, she just rolled her eyes and said ohhhhhh. He owes me for the 8 wks he held conferences & didn't teach a thing.
Funny, sarcastic, unconventional. Lotsa homework. You'll bust butt for the first 12 of course and grammar counts! In class assignments are tough. I took the class to improve my writing and I sure did. Last half of course is used as a workshop to polish your final paper. Use it and your skills will improve exponentially. Prof Cox cares and it shows
If you're taking this class from this teacher as a journalism major be prepared to take it again because what you're supposed to learn in this class you actually don't. My upper division profs have asked me stuff like "didn't you learn that in intro to news writing"? The fact is I didn't. This teacher is fun but you don't learn what you need.
Kevin Cox is the best professor I've had a Mesa College. Not only does he provide a clear understanding about hard news writing, he also gives every student the opportunity to write a narrative for publication. He truly cares about his students. Take his class. You won't regret it.
Prof Cox is a great prof. Very unique styles that I think may give students a love-or-hate feel for the class. Gives great attention to students and to detail. Gives out large amounts of work, but is prepared and willingly to not only do it himself as well, but to give you very helpful feedback, criticism, and motivation to do well. Overall awesome
This was my 1st community college class since my main school is a university in NY &I wasn't disappointed.I learned a lot of valuable info that I know I'll use as a future journalist. His class is based on real situations, not just what the book says. &His syllabus has changed,so he teaches more of the AP style. Do the work& you'll pass. Great Guy!
Definitely someone you either love or hate. Super tough grader and he won't sugar code his feedback either! But he is available to help during workshops & office hours. GO TO THE WORKSHOPS! Most beneficial class I have ever taken thanks to him! By the way, he's hilarious!
Tireless when it comes to helping student improve their writing. His passion for good story telling rubbed off on me and I see reading and writing in a whole new light. I'm thankful I took his class.
Took his class 2yrs ago - still one of the best teachers I've had! Constructive feedback and very engaging. Shared real world examples and experiences. Definitely challenging - but you will also learn and improve your skills! Maybe not for everyone but the ones who appreciated his teaching style were all very happy they took his class. SDCCD gem!
I was a bit skeptical to take his class because i had read the previous reviews, however he's a smart guy & has a lot to offer so i appreciated the advice he gave us. Make sure you're in time for class because there are quizzes at the start of class. If you do all the work you should easily pass . #dontgofartherthanthefactsallow
KC was a probably the most laid back professor I have ever taken. Very knowledgeable and honestly tries to make the class relatable to the real world. Would definitely take him again!
Awesome class. Awesome professor. The subject matter is relatable and interesting. Skipper is quite a character, very intelligent, great with feedback, and he will really help you excel. Write the essays, go to his workshops, do the readings and you'll get an A.
I've attended multiple colleges and am about to graduate. Professor Cox is by far the best professor I've ever had. Highly inspirational, to say the least. He gives amazing lectures, and requires everyone to contribute their ideas. His lectures require deep critical thinking, so if you don't want to try, don't attend. Don't miss out.
I had Mr Cox for English 101 during intersession. There was a lot of material to cover in four weeks but he made it fun and worth coming to class everyday. We discussed thoroughly every piece of writing that was required and he provided the best feedback to succeed and get a good grade in the class. Strongly recommend Mr Cox for all English courses
Don't waste your time reading more reviews - take his class. The three hours can get a little long, but he has a lot of experiences to learn from and a very witty sense of humor. I usually don't prefer teachers who laugh at their own jokes, but he is hilarious and he knows it. He really helps you understand the concepts and value of journalism.
If you have a chance to take a course from Professor Kevin Cox, take advantage of the opportunity! I thoroughly enjoyed english 101 and I learned a great deal about writing. If you are lucky enough to have Professor Cox for english 101, I highly recommend taking advantage of his workshops. It is within those moments that you will learn the most.
Cox has very strong opinions about certain topics and would spend the entire class period talking about it. He barely taught and his method of "teaching" was more of intimidating students. His feedback for essays was not helpful and super hard to understand. I would NOT recommend him if you're trying to learn without being intimidated.
It's rare to find a prof who is so generous with his time, so I disagree that he is "intimidating". He is always willing to explain his comments further/differently--just ask him to. He personalized multiple letters of rec for me for various programs (most prof just use a template). His time and patience shows that he wants his students to succeed.
I continue to think about this class. I look back at the subjects we wrote about and I appreciate them more now. They continue to change how (and why) I think. I took this class a year ago and I'm now writing this review... Thought provoking class. Take this class. He made English and writing fun. I never thought I'd say that. Excellent teacher!!
Cool guy but the class needs some TLC. He's very strict on attendance. 5 minutes late? You lose participation pts for the whole day. Conducts a pop quiz every other week. Late for that? Can't make it up. He is funny and very knowledgeable, but I was not a fan of sitting and listening to him ramble for 45 long minutes out of the 3 hour session.
Unorthodox but effective. He teaches hard news formula by rote & analyzing irl news. Be on time, do your hw. Grades on personalized curve but does have criteria u work toward. Will work w/ you individually if you ask. Learn to take constructive criticism to succeed here. An INTRO class for WRITING news, designed for combo w/ theory classes!
I had KC when he filled in for another professor at Mesa. He helped me with a big story I did, through several edits, made it award-worthy. Also took his class the next year, and had two projects from his class published in the Reader. KC isn't just a prof/teacher. He is a mentor. Still talk to him even now, three years after taking his class.
Great English professor and interesting lectures! You should definitely take him if you want to improve as a writer and thinker. Homework consists of about 8 essays, which he helps you set up in class. Attend his workshops if you want good grades on your essays; he'll teach you how to express your ideas more effectively!
Class was like a successful philosophical chairs where Prof. Cox led the discussion topics. The amount of participation, ideas, and critical-thinking skills he can draw out of all of his students is beyond amazing. He is a dedicated educator who will help his students with their essays. They just need to ATTEND THE WORKSHOPS!!!
I loved this journalism class. KC has a super impressive journalism background and knows his stuff. His comments are hilarious. Make sure you keep up with the news because he gives 5 pop quizzes throughout the semester but that is pretty much it. In class, work consists of writing news leads and stories. I learned a lot from him about news writing.
Professor Cox has a unique style of teaching. You don't have to buy any books for his class because he provides articles for us to read and we write our essays based on those articles. He challenged us to think deeper about the articles by asking "how" and "why." I highly recommend him. He is open-minded and wants what's best for his students.
Unorthodox but exhilarating professor! It is all about the "how" and the "why". His class was a solid foundation for other college courses. Attend all the workshops and meet with him during his office hours. Because of him, I am now a McNair scholar conducting research in Communication Studies. He truly cares about his students. Put in the work!
I loved taking Professor Cox's newswriting class. He knows what he is talking about having worked in the journalism industry so long. And he teaches you practical knowledge that we can use in the professional world. He doesn't waste our time (or money with textbooks) on the useless information. All practical, and useful knowledge.
I had a wonderful experience in both his E101 and JOUR200 class. Cox makes his expectations very clear. He provides constructive feedback on assignments when needed. His English class consisted of 5 papers based on short texts. Even as someone who is not planning on going into journalism, I still learned many useful writing tips. I recommend.
I definitely recommend his journalism course! He is clear on what he wants and will help you throughout the process. His goofy yet inspirational lectures are a great mix to keep the class interesting. No textbook needed! Focuses on real time journalism.
Mr. Cox has the most confusing guidelines for his papers. All of the papers and discussions must be done the exact same way, leaving no room for creativity or writing from the heart from time to time. I would NOT recommend taking any of his online courses. He's probably great in person, but he complicates things that should be so simple.
I wish I had more teachers like Prof. Cox. I've never had a single teacher as inspiring, electrifying, and nurturing as he is. He really cares about his students and uplifts them in whatever way he can. Show up, show you care, and you'll reap the benefits of his mentorship. Professor Cox truly is the gem of Mesa's journalism department.
Good professor but some things I wish I knew -You HAVE to read the article before class and be prepared to share your thoughts to the class -Must attend workshops or else it will lower your participation grade -get ready to write a paper weekly -aside from papers, no homework or test -
Professor Cox was phenomenal! I really enjoyed his class! Amazing feedback! Easy to reach! I would take his class again!
I took ENGL 101 online this summer, and Professor Cox provided a great learning environment. The greatest advice I can give is to always ask questions. He is very quick and eager to respond to emails. And, perhaps equally important, always refer to the rubric! I would recommend this class if you're looking to analyze some thought-provoking texts.
Prof. Cox is a good teacher. I took this class online over the summer. There is a paper due every week, but he sends the reading and gives links for info, so no book! He is clear about what he is looking for to get an A. He is also funny. I would take him again for sure.
Cox's methods are pretty unorthodox, but his enthusiasm for his craft is contagious! It is a lot of writing. However, the essays are short and the first 3 papers are full-credit so long as you put it genuine effort. While his class is challenging, he will make you a better writer if you're committed. I'm so glad that I took his class!
Confusing texts and instructions. Hard to understand what he really wants you to write. His feedbacks are very confusing as well, you end up having to write what he wants you to read.
Overall, great guy. Really wants to push students to be better writers, and will help you reach your goals. If you show up, put in your best effort, and push yourself to do better, you will do just find. Will also help with letters of rec, and is proud to see his students do great things.
This is my favorite college teacher and class. I cannot say enough good things about it. Mr. Cox is entertaining and fun, but he also teaches you life skills you can use in the real world. From resumes to writing techniques-- he covers it all. I will never forget this class or this teacher. TAKE IT.
This was the worst English class Ive ever taken. Only gives papers an A if you write it exactly how he would. Doesnt give clear instructions, only 20 pages of convoluted directions. Honestly kind of rude and condescending with his grading comments. Way too picky of a grader. Thank god I only had one semester.
I took Professor K.C.s online ENGL 101 course and my experience was one to remember! He was charismatic and knowledgeable in what he taught. With all assignments, he will tell you what you need improvement on and take the time to highlight your accomplishments. He genuinely cares about the well-being of his students, which not many professors do!
I took Professor Cox's Journalism 200 class in 2019. It was my first journalism class and I didn't know what to expect. I am so happy I took his class. He made each class fascinating with personal anecdotes from his experiences as a reporter. The classroom felt like a newsroom and I evolved as a writer and learned a lot about being a journalist.
Prof. Cox has a journalistic angle on every topic covered. Very Interesting reading material, and everything is open source: no need to buy a book. Not your typical educator!
Prof Cox for the most part is a pretty good teacher. However, he is very arrogant. He thinks he is being funny in his feedback but really it comes off as brash and rude and makes you feel inadequate. But, if you ask for more feedback, he will give it to you. Only makes you write argumentive papers which can be annoying. Easy class though.
Very arrogant and condescending when grading, only likes your writing if it appeals to his own writing style. Is also extremely confusing with instructions unnecessarily
