Professor Davis is amazing. He helps all the time, his tests are super easy, and the lectures are clear and simple to understand. The course also opens your eyes to a lot of things, and it's rich with interesting information. 1010
Professor Davis is amazing. He will spend as much time as you need for you to understand something when you ask him a question. The lectures aren't hard and the class is very interesting. I would definitely want to take it again!
Professor Davis is amazing. He will spend as much time as you need for you to understand something when you ask him a question. The lectures aren't hard and the class is very interesting.
Dr. Davis is a very compelling lecturer. He seems genuinely passionate about his subject and you learn a lot. Unlike many freshman year teachers, he doesn't record his lectures, so it's important to go to class. He covers a lot of material very fast, and while the textbook is interesting he doesn't draw questions out of it.
Hilarious and engaging, which is great because BCS 110 piques students' interest in the major instead of weeding them out or boring them away.
Great Professor!
His lectures have been my favorite
great prosody when lecturing! super passionate
This class is fine if you are a BCS BS and have taken a bit of biology and/or physics. The course gets very specific and if you are not REALLY into this, you will get aggravated. Davis is extremely passionate and will meet with you for office hours but If you simply do not like mathematical approaches (graphs, equations, etc) , I would avoid.
Really passionate professor
Lectures are really interesting, but the tests are very VERY specific and multiple choice. He likes to put two answers that are close but not quite so it can be difficult to know. Tests are hard but he gives good curves so you can definitely do well if you work for it. Interesting stuff!
He really knows his stuff and his lectures are pretty interesting if you care about the material. Tests are hard and 100% of the grade, so be ready to study, but he curves the average to an 83 so don't be too scared. Textbook optional, but can help reinforce lectures. Overall I thought he was a really great professor. Challenging, but rewarding.
You can tell that he cares about what he teaches. Every lecture is very involved and you will learn a lot in this course. The tests are straightforward and he answers questions very well. Overall, this is a great class and made me even more interested in pursuing my major.
Prof Davis is a great lecturer and really passionate about what he's teaching. Things on class is important for students to get a good grade in tests, so I would say definitely attending the class. Because of little backgrounds on Bio and Chem, I faced a hard time in taking all the information. The tests is specific and require lots of memorizing.
I enjoy his lectures so much! His style of teaching is engaging and inspiring. The recitations are helpful in connecting what he said in class. Never Regret taking his class!
I loved taking his class. Obviously there are some topics that can be pretty boring, but he is a great professor. I would totally recommend. He is a fair grader and his exams are also fair. It is not mandatory to attend his class, but it would only benefit you more.
He is the best professor as you can learn stuff and really get help
Wonderful wonderful lecturer. The way he talks makes me feel intrigued with the material!
I think it's hard to teach a class of more than 50 people, so given that, Proff Davis does a good job. Otherwise, I'm not a fan of the class.
One of my favorite professors! Great lecturer! Tests are hard but he tells you what you need to know if you go to lecture. No textbook needed.
At the beginning this year, I took his class as a requirement for Psychology major but then I switched to become a Math major. technically, I can just declare P/F in his class but I didn't because I love his teaching style and his passion for the material! His tests are challenging they are curved nicely!
Professor Davis is passionate about neuroscience. His lectures are well organized and the way he teaches is exciting. The content is difficult, but as long as you study and pay attention, the class is fine and is very interesting.
A model of consistency. Always has quality lectures with quality energy. I am a math major who doesn't really care at all about this topic, but he made it interesting enough to make me want to learn/get an A (as opposed to declaring pass/fail).
Kevin Davis is one of my favorite professors at U of R. His lectures are very well organized with a fun delivery. His tests are very hard however, they require a lot of memorization and even then the questions can be vague as to what he wants for an answer.
Davis is a great professor, but only for students with a particular style of learning. If you can absorb and memorize information just by hearing it presented in lectures, you'll be fine. You will be responsible for a lot of information on his exams, which are unnecessarily challenging. Get ready to spend a lot of time in the library.
His lectures were clear and necessary to understand the material. He is energetic and passionate about the topics which motivated everyone to pay attention and actually enjoy the course.
Great class, great professor
He is THE best professor. His lecture is so fun so interesting. Don't think it's hard as the curve is too high. I got a couple full marks. (even though my raw marks are not 100) You will definitely fall in love with him after you take his lecture. I promise.
I usually get 9 hours of sleep each night, but I still SOMEHOW fell asleep every single day in his class. BCS110 is a nightmare. His class is not worth it. He makes exams way harder than they need to be and it almost feels like he enjoys seeing all of his students get stressed when midterms come around.
Loved his teaching style - he is able to explain complex concepts well and uses relevant examples. Funny guy too. REALLY hard tests but he is often available for extra help.
Professor Davis is a cool guy. Would love to take another of his classes.
Great prof! Hard grader but worth it.
Davis is an amazing professor however his tests are extremely difficult. the avg for each exam is around 50% but theres a heavy curve which will save you! MUST go to class , lectures are all his tests are.
Kevin Davis is a really funny, interesting, and knowledgeable lecturer and professor, however his exams are incredibly difficult. Went to him to see how else I could be studying and he told me I was doing everything I could, yet my scores were never where I wanted them to be. Interesting course, but be prepared to study like a mad man
Dr. Davis is an incredible professor. The material is difficult to grasp at first and he doesn't record lectures so you really need to pay attention in class. Study every slide and memorize as much as you can and you'll be fine. If you aren't a big memorization person, this class isn't for you.
Davies is an entertaining professor, but this is definitely a tough course. You really have to memorize everything and anything that is taught in class. Also it's impossible to get an A on tests but the curves will save you a ton. Wish the tests were more reflective of how much you study but oh well.
Kevin Davis was an engaging professor and made lectures fun, but the brain diagrams on his exams are insane and he has to curve test averages to a B-. One of the toughest courses I've taken at U of R.
In BCSC 110, each unit is packed with information. It's pretty hard to remember it all. Because of COVID, this year it was open note and idk how I'd pass if it wasn't. The average grades are still pretty poor even with notes, but the curve will definitely save you. I got a 43 on a test and the curve brought me to an 85.
Professor Davis is incredible! I took his BCS 110 class, took his NSC 201 class while TA-ing for his BCS 110 class. I love this professor's passion, and if you show you are interested and go to his office hours, he'll be happy to talk about the material. The tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken, but the curve is generous! Highly recommend!
Dr. Davis is an amazing professor and truly loves studying the brain. He has so much energy when he lectures and in office hours, is always laughing. The exams are extremely tough and I'm sure without open notes, I would not have done so well. However, I would 10/10 take another class with him.
Every test class average was somewhere around 50% -- Davis crams so much into his lectures that it's honestly impossible to really remember all the information, much less know it how he wants you to know it. Studying will probably leave you at an alright spot after the curve.
Professor Davis was a great professor, he always explained the material very clearly and he was happy to meet outside of class to answer questions. The exams were open note, with a moderate amount of studying it wasn't hard to get an A with the curve, but they would be a lot harder if not open note (I think they aren't during non-covid).
Dr. Davis, So many things to say. What a silly goose. Live Love Tables.
What a guy. This class has pretty difficult content that's mostly memorization, but he makes a dry subject genuinely enjoyable. The grade is based on 3 midterm exams and an optional final that can replace your lowest midterm, and he curves 40-50s to an 80.
Dr Davis is amazing, the best professor I've ever had. The tests for 110 are very hard but he curves them to make the average an 83% which is really nice. The lectures are engaging and he makes them interesting. It is clear he really knows what he is talking about. Office hours are a little scary but helpful
Professor Davis is definitely one of my favorite professors. He is very organized during lectures, and often uses understandable analogies when teaching a complicated concept. If you go to lectures, work hard, and make sure you understand everything, the exams shouldn't be that hard.
In order to do well, you will have to memorize every single detail of what he says and puts in the lectures. No getting around it because most test questions include multiple concepts stacked on each other. But, his info is organized nicely on the slides and if you study A LOT, you can do well .
My absolute favorite professor this semester. Funny, clearly cares and wants you to succeed, and his lectures are well organized and clear. Extremely difficult topics so you’ll need to study a lot but exams are generously curved. Go to his office hours too; he’s super nice and always willing to help!
Dr.Davis is super nice and experienced. Give good lectures and explains everything very clearly. But his course isn't easy, get ready!
Loved the class! By far my favorite class and I took it online. Professor Davis is a great lecturer and explains complex topics in way that is interesting and makes the class fun! :)
If you're someone who crams, you will fail. I can personally tell you that you should be scared if you always cram lol. I do mean this is the best way possible. I did take the class online and so he made it more difficult so others wouldn't cheat, but even then, please go to lectures. The exams were multiple choice (online) and he made it so hard.
DR.Davis is my favourate prof of university. He is so nice and helpful, give clear and good lectures. And he is Always delighted to help us on Office hours. I also took BCS110 and would like to take more of his lectures. His tests are hard.
He is an interesting lecturer and this class got me interested in cognitive science, but he makes his test unnecessarily hard. He curves every exam average to an 83 so if you study hard you'll be fine, but there is absolutely a way to teach the same material without such difficult exams, and that is the only thing your grade is based on.
He's a really engaging and thoughtful professor. He puts everything in a way you will understand and he's accessible outside lecture if you need help. As long as you study really really hard, you'll be okay. If you put the effort into the class, you'll get a good grade since his curves are really good.
Professor Davis is a really funny and great lecturer but really does not care about his students' success. His exams are hard and he usually writes them the night before so you do not know what he could be adding to them. To do well in this class you really need a good TA.
Great lectures. Tests are super nuanced and difficult, great curves though. Tests are on his lectures, you don't need to get a textbook. You need to study hard if you want to do well.
His lectures are quite engaging, but there is so much content to learn that the exams are really difficult. The wording of his exams can really trip you up so asking clarification questions on the exam is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I recommend going to office hours too. You need to think like Davis thinks, and not just know the content...
Dr. Davis is a hilarious and engaging speaker. I felt more alert in his class than in any others I took this semester, and he definitely put his heart and soul into lecturing. That said, the recitations are mediocre at best and the tests are unnecessarily arcane. Dr. Davis and BCS 110 demand a lot for you, don't underestimate the low course number.
Dr. Davis is a hilarious and engaging lecturer, however I found his lectures very confusing. His tests are notoriously nuanced, specific, and difficult. He will re-do lectures for you in office hours which is great. If you want to do well in this class, expect to study A LOT. I also hope you like memorizing tables and diagrams...
Nice as a person and lecturer but he made this class so much harder than it has to be and will not recommend if 110 is not mandatory in your major
Super great lecturer but tests were no joke. The curve works in your favor so most people don't do worse than a B- but you definitely have to put a lot of effort in to do well and understand the concepts.
Amazing professor who actually knows a lot about his area of study and is genuinely focused on teaching. However content are hard and exams are harder. Curves helps but each lecture and exam results just leaves me so strained and hopeless. If you are a very sciency person who wants to learn lots about bioscience go ahead
Prof Davis is such an amazing prof and person. You can tell he is super engaged in his material. BSC 110 is just an extremely hard course, but he makes it his best to make it engaging. He is very animated. The curve in the class is insane, the tests are like no other. The entire class is pure memorization. Be prepared to study and study for the exam
Dr. Davis has the most organized, detailed, and understandable lecture slides of all my professors. You could ask him anything you want during his office hours. You can't give him a low rating just because you didn't put in enough effort. The content is challenging, but not impossible, given the generous curves that he gives on every exam.
BCSC 110 is my second course with Dr. Davis, and I have grown to like him and his classes a lot more because I am prepared for the workload (which is a lot). Go to class and record the lectures yourself (the older recordings are less relevant). Pay attention and write down every word, reorganize the content later, and ask him questions to survive.
Very engaging and interesting professor who has great lectures, just a very difficult and lecture/test-heavy class with lots and lots of studying outside of lectures. Despite all, he grades pretty fairly and passing is very feasible. It's just getting an A that is extremely difficult.
I love Professor Davis, he was so amazingly helpful in office hours and he has a really big curve. I took BCS 110 as a transfer student who was not familiar at all with how harsh the U of R education system was going to be, and he made it a really welcoming experience for me personally .I think his lectures are fair and you need to study though!
Super hard to get an A. As someone who cram a lot, I feel my brain is about to explode every time before the exam. The course is informative and interesting, except that it may destroy your gpa!
Lectures are fun & enjoyable, however there are only 4 tests & an optional final so beware... Pls go to lectures he talk about what he'll test on in lectures only, and you need to study a lot. A LOT.
He is one of the best professors I met at UR. He is caring and he explains concepts clearly. The course is interesting but really time-consuming. There is too much content to remember and understand.
Dr. Davis gives high-quality lectures and the slides are of the most organized among all courses in the university. He is caring and accessible after class and gives extra office hours before exams. His exams are truly tricky, but if you organize your notes and try to think a step forward and predict what will be on the exam, you will be fine.
Professor Davis is truly one of the most caring professors on campus. He actually wants you to succeed. There was also a lot of generous curves given on the exams.
Dr. Davis is a great professor. His lectures are well-organized, entertaining, and super informative. That being said, this was the hardest class I have taken at U of R. If you haven't taken BCS 110 before hand, prepare to learn a lot of material and feel way behind. That being said, he is super accessible out of class and cares about students.
Loved the material of the class and the professor. Didn't love the tests. Probably spent 15-20 hours a week studying, and even with the curve averaged out an 88. Study a LOT for the exams and review the material the day you get it. There is tons of content loaded into his lectures, but it's generally easy to understand if you go to lecture and rec.
He did a great job, his lectures were clear and posted in case you need to rewatch them, and he was very clear about what you would be tested on. Generally a great teacher. However, the class is incredibly difficult because of the sheer amount of material within it. It sets up a great basis for the rest of the major but it is so damn hard.
Its hard to enjoy a class with such hard exams and content but Kevin Davis really did a great job. I really enjoyed his class and the content but you really cannot get through this with a good grade unless you study. He is also extremely understanding and accommodating! I highly recommend his classes but do beware that it might hit your gpa.
Kevin is the best teacher I've ever taken in U of R. He's fun and really excited about his teaching. However, be ready to fail his class since he's the worst grader.
really difficult tests given by one of my favorite professors on campus. don't take it if you don't have to, unless you want to. in that case, enjoy it!
K dawg is the man. Best professor at UR hands down no questions asked.
His fits and tests could use some work but he's chilling fr. Very content-dense lectures.
Dr. Davis has so much passion for what he teaches, and his lecture style really did help me grasp super hard concepts. Extremely effective professor. I looked forward to his lecture every M/W/F. Probably the most difficult exams I've taken in my life (you do have to get used to his question style) but otherwise a great time.
Having him for a year in 110/201, I say he is very passionate about the material, caring and accessible, and an all-around respected professor. My suggestion for studying would be drawing on a whiteboard, writing down notes of recitation concepts, understanding his testing style, active studying, and getting OH with either TAs/Davis. All the best.
the nicest professor ever. his exams are really difficult though. you need to understand his questions and try to predict them. lecture heavy. highly recommend going and/or watching the old recordings he provides
The material is interesting but in order to get an A, be prepared to spend every day looking at notes. You'll have to study your butt off if you don't memorize things quickly. Expect to study ~14 hours a week (at least) to memorize everything well. This class made me emotionally numb and I burnt out quickly. Don't take it if you don't need it
Loved this class and Dr Davis is hands down my favorite professor here. The best advice to do well in this class is just REALLY familiarize yourself with the paper structure because it's always going to be the same.
Oh Prof. Davis. What a legend. 11/10 would recommend despite the lack of sleep I got the week leading up to one of his exams.
Dr. Davis was kind and understanding but is very content heavy. The grade is based on 4 exams and an optional final and that's it. The exams are curved but they're still really hard. I will say the course said some inaccuracies (i.e. he said you could sleep for 1.5 hours every night and probably be fine, he said coke has no negative impacts).
I would 100% take his class again if he gives doable exams and makes it less exam heavy. His lecture is the BEST among all classes, but his exams are really difficult. Curve helps, but you will have to study A LOT for good grade. Go to class, do what he tells you to do (tablesss!!), memorize brain diagram, and please, go to his office hours.
As long as you study throughout the unit and not the last minute you will be fine.
Love him as a professor, but the way he structures his grading system is just flawed and brutal. The only grades being 4 exam grades and an optional final. Although they're curved, the amount of content for each unit and how intricate the memorization is, makes the exams feel impossible. Especially with how the exams, themselves, are structured.
Very difficult but interesting material. Dr. Davis is super engaging to listen to, and makes coming to lecture that much more worth it. He curves exams because the class average is usually around a 50 but he is the nicest guy and this class is hard to fail.
