He made a very interesting class out of something I had no interest in. That gets an "A" in my book! He isn't too tough, but he aims to make his students be better writers. Be prepared to write in his class!
This man will talk your ear off! He knows a lot about the subject but he tends to get a bit boring. He lectures for a long time and he does not use a real textbook for the class. However, you will make up for it by reading a lot of online readings. The workload was not bad at all. He was an okay teacher.
Guy talks a lot and extremely hyper in the morning. Question of days come from the reading, which is really long and boring and online. Grades come from your papers, so have good grammer. really slow at getting those back.
This is one of the two best instructors I have ever had. I took an honors section of this class, and I highly recommend it. However, be prepared to do your very best work. This guy can spot BS at a distance of 50 yards! I have never had to work harder, though I have never felt more accomplished when I got an A- in his class. Don't pass him up.
The class that he instructs tha i attend is in the adutiorium with over 100 people. he does not make us write much(which he is most likely upset about) but lectures with very humorous yet very informative power points. He seems to be very knowledgable in political science.
you won't get a better teacher for political science
He's a good teacher. the only thing i dont like is that you have to attend all classes in order to pass his Exam other than that he is very good, i recomend him to everybody
Dr.Kevin Deegan-Krause is a great professor. He is very funny and keeps powerpoint lectures very interesting and humorous (when they are normally very boring). Grades based on 3 exams which were straight from his lectures and exactly what he told us to study in each chapter. Stay until the end ofsemester you wont be sorry. and MUST ATTEND LECTURES!
I liked him; responded to emails in haste sometimes tho. totaly a cutie, very nice although very opinionated. but in all this guy knows his stuff.
His lectures kept you interested and he knew what he was talking about. I only took the class for the gen ed. and because of Honors, but it was okay. My only problem was his lectures, TA lectures and classes, and the (massive amounts of) reading did not go together.
Awesome professor! He's hilarious! and made class actually interesting. He does these interactive activities so you get certain concepts and his powerpoints are so funny! Honestly, take him. I took him for honors so it might have been a little different, but not completely. You learn the same stuff.
i found this class very boring, it was a 3 hour lecture in deroy with about 300 people in class, i usual couldnt even stay the whole class and left during break. i felt like he was never on topic (he mostly talked about the 08 election and pushed his views on us)also he had material on the test that he said would not be on there.
This class (Democracy) was amazing! Best class I've ever taken. Prof is creative and learns everyone's name. We learned about democratic procedures by creating our own elections. 3 papers for the course, around 5-8 pages (the first was shorter). Discussions were interesting & Prof was knowledgeable. If this class is offered again, TAKE IT. :)
He's excellent. I took him for PS 1010 Honors and for PS 4710 (Democracy). He is very well-versed in the subject areas, and he truly does his best to help students. Democracy started off a little unorganized, but in the end I learned more than I have in any other class. A con: He can be really slow with grading papers. Highly regarded in his field.
First,he talks the whole time. We were never let out early. He is very ambiguous with the way he taught the class. I didn't feel like a normal policy class. He was always switching up dates and I was always confused when stuff was due or when we had quiz.He does make you read a alot material thats useless. He uses the word CORE alot for some reason.
He teaches more than just Honors PS 1010. I took him for that class and for another class, Democracy (PS 4710). He's a really great prof with a lot of experience. He set up the classes in a way that is creative and refreshing. He's unconventional, but you learn a lot. Attendance is key.Hilarious; clever; a little unorganized in a genus sort of way.
A very energetic and enthusiastic teacher. Always interested to hear student opinion and enter discussions. I found him a great lecturer, if a little repetitive at times. Subject matter was ridiculously simple, but that was the class more than the professor.
Really cool professor! The class was very reading intensive, and if you didnt do the readings you would fail the weekly quizzes, which are half of your grade. But he explains things well and is very enthusiastic, even when talking about boring topics.
KDK is so nice and his lectures are fun, though repetitive. The readings suck and the quizzes are hard but he'll put the same questions on them week after week so people get them right. He grades strictly on participation for some assignments. I didn't learn much but I got credit for an easy pre-req so that's really all I care about.
Great guy. He has funny slides during lecture... the most entertaining part of it all though is that he looks and sounds exactly like "Phil" from the show Modern Family... he's very engaging and loves to move around the room and it keeps his lectures bearable.
KDK is an AWESOME lecturer! If you listen in class, you'll gain a lot out of it. Very funny too, and keeps you interested. Pay attention (and do all the assignments from seminar) and you'll have no problem doing well!
KDK has the coolest lectures of anyone at Wayne. They are more of a visual tool than a guide for the lecture, using metaphors and weird pictures to explain course material in an entertaining and understandable way. Loves what he teaches and shows it. Kind and extremely approachable towards students.
Professor KDK deserves an award for his ultra-progressive teaching style. Not only is he one of the nicest people you will ever meet, he is the best Political Science teacher at Wayne State. Very glad I took his class.
KDK is a wonderful person, but the course i took with him really lacked structure. He encourages students to engage in discussions, be active, and to ask questions. He will help you if you need, but a lot of times the lectures lack useful content.
KDK doesn't lecture in this class because he doesn't know much about democracies outside the types of electoral systems, for about two months. Then he talks about electoral laws kinda, then accountability for like an hour and spend the rest of the time listening to the opinion of his students. It's a blow-off class.
The class is based on WEEKLY PAPERS and TWO final papers for your grade. There are no quizzes/tests. Class participation is key and is a part of your grade as well. If you email him, he will never get back to you so just ask him whatever question you have after class. This class was challenging.
PS 1010 is much better in comparison with HON1000 with Herron. The concepts, while extremely abstract, are made much more tangible and understandable. He has fun demonstrations in class and tries to involve the students in creative ways. On the whole, show up, take a few notes, and done. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. They say you'll use it in life. Nope.
Kevin is an awesome professor. His lectures are not boring at all. I personally enjoyed them, and the way they were introduced. He's hilarious, and is a really nice guy. i got to know him a bit, and is very personable. Hes great to have in your network after you take his course. He gives awesome advice and his metaphors are cute.
KDK is super nice and helpful and funny. he really knows his stuff, although in HONORS ps1010, he might be able to show that. this class is far better than HON1000. get to know him, he's great and always ready to help kids out. his lectures are fun and entertaining. he loves loves participation. take the opportunity to participate in lectures.
I legit couldn't care less about Political Science and after taking this course I still feel the same but I will say that KDK is truly a good professor when it comes to his lecture. His comparisons/metaphors and what not really help you to get the basic understanding if not anything else and he's pretty funny too.
Not your ordinary political science course.
KDK really cares about what he teaches. The best professor I've had yet at Wayne.
an unforgettable professor. so caring and kind. so knowledgable and intelligent about the coursework and politics and such in general. pretty funny too. you actually have to do the readings and he expects you to participate in discussions. one small paper and two big papers are the bulk of your grade. wants you to succeed. would def take again!
Very lecture heavy for Honors PS1010. KDK is very passionate about what he teaches--makes lectures more interesting. Make information very clear through his analogies in his PowerPoints. Not always very helpful or pleasant to talk with outside of class.
Awesome professor, definitely enthusiastic about the material and just in general. Would take him again.
Nothing in this course is relevant and grading is vague. KDK is intelligent and caring but he is so boring. I listened to him for the first two weeks and then checked out. Readings are irrelevant. Have fun with assignment descriptions that make no sense. The only important part of this class is your discussion.
He was a really nice and funny professor teaching a subject he loves - politics. He almost makes PS1010 bearable, but the class still sucks. Attendance is "mandatory", but I started just signing in and leaving before the class even started because you get nothing from his lectures (except for occasional entertainment). He's nice, that's the gist.
KDK is a really nice guy, but just like HON1000, this class is very unfocused & emphasizes concepts that rarely pertain to the assignments we do. I wish I got something more tangible out of this but I really just ended up waiting for this semester to end. Despite being easy, this class definitely tests my patience with the honors college.
KDK is great. He's a funny guy who truly cares about his students and he's very passionate about political science. Was I interested in this class? No. Honestly, I skipped most of the lectures. However, when I did go, I sincerely enjoyed them. He is kind of scatterbrained, but hey at least he tries to make it interesting.
KDK is a wee bit hyperactive in lecturehe made me anxious a lot with how fast he talked and jumped from idea to idea. However, hes a brilliant guy, very kind, and he loves his subject (and will ardently defend it against the Poli Sci haters). Great prof; I believe hes taking over HON1000 in Fall 18 as Dr. Herron retires.
This was KDK's first time teaching HON 1000, and I think he did a great job. He was super enthusiastic, and covered a lot of material over the semester. Much of the material is interesting and relevant, considering this is a required course. There are some field trips as well to local places. The readings weren't always necessary though.
KDK is an absolute gem. He's super passionate about the class and is always jumping around in class during lectures. He loves participation and student input. Really friendly and funny guy. However, don't bother doing the weekly readings. Will say, the grading for the class is a little hard though so be prepared to work pretty hard for an A.
KDK is a great teacher with really good lectures, and makes the class better than it should be. Great professor, really boring class. You have to show up to lectures as well.
Honestly, KDK is the BEST lecturer Ive ever seen. He makes the class so interesting and is super funny and kind. Hes always up for discussion and makes sure students are always heard. Its so funny when he never has enough time to finish his lectures because of how much he goes off topic! Only downside is his readings are so long and tedious.
He's very passionate about the topics every week and it shows through in his demeanor. He continuously makes jokes and is the type of teacher that can talk to just about anyone. I recommend talking to him either after class or during his office hours, he's a very welcoming guy.
Great guy just a terrible class. No context to any of the huge paper assignments given. Senior lecturers are no help, just expect you to finish the work with no guidance at all. Half the kids in the class just wing everything that is given to them. Literally do not feel like you are learning anything, this class will just ruin your GPA.
Absolutely not the intellectual he pretends to be. Assignments and lectures have nothing to do with the actual content of the course. Be prepared to have your hand held through easy high-school style papers written over the course of months only to be hit with a giant research paper written over a couple weeks. Hated this class.
Lecture had nothing to do with the assignments, yet attendance was mandatory. I had to drive 2hrs just for 50min class, and it was not worth it. All the work is done in discussion section, not in lecture. He only talks about the readings (which were long and useless). We had to attend 2-3 events each semester outside of class time which was a waste
KDK is probably one of the most energetic professors that I've had a Wayne. The honors lectures, while absolutely useless, are occasionally interesting with him lecturing. Granted this class was a waste of time but he was a decent lecturer.
KDK made Honors1000 fun, especially because I am interested in the City of Detroit. His lectures are funny and relatable, so you want to pay attention to them! I thought he did a good job teaching the Lecture section of HON1000 and I wish I could take more classes with him!
The goal of the class, if you choose to accept it, is to help you think critically. Many STEM majors in the honors believe the class holds no purpose for them and get cocky, but it was truly valuable for me. The professor is hilarious and you're bound to have a little fun during lectures. The midterm and final are about the readings, so do them!
Super great guy, makes a lot of jokes and puns during the lectures that everyone appreciates because the content is pretty boring. Also threw in a 5 minute break which was greatly appreciated. However, lectures didn't seem to benefit me very much. I got all my information for the exam from the readings.
Although some might make the claim that Honors 1000 is not worth their time, I found it extremely interesting. Dr. Deegan-Krause never fails to make lecture entertaining (even if it is not your forte) because he has a true passion for political science. Dr. Deegan-Krause truly made an effort to be there for his students... a truly great guy.
Very enthusiastic professor. I loved his lectures. I highly recommend him
Loved KDK's lectures and personality! Great prof.
His class are what you make it. If you are interested in making the world a better place his honors PS1010 class is perfect for you. Has great connections to politicians and other high ups in organizations. 4 assignments for the year and all 4 are 10 page group papers. Classy guy and a real benefit to experience if you go to WSU
KDK is an amazing professor. He is extremely passionate about his subject and tries to cater to a variety of learning styles and will explain anything you don't understand. Very accommodating, very caring, very funny, and VERY accessible to students. I really liked how he gives feedback on work but he does not always give a letter grade quickly.
He is awesome and giving lectures and always makes it fun. He also knows his memes! Attend his lectures and you will learn a ton of material that he makes worthwhile.
KDK is extremely passionate, and it shows with the amount of effort he puts into his lectures online. Truly an exceptional instructor, I hated anything to do with poly sci until I took his class. It's amazing what a fantastic professor can actually do for you. Plz do the weekly readings, a lot of people skip them but they're missing out
Very passionate about his work and very interesting. Really listens to concerns of students.
KDK is amazing, very passionate & knowledgeable. If you share his passion for politics & history you'll love him. Class consists of creating a fictional country with a group through the semester, ending with a paper. There are also dense weekly readings you post about. Classes often run long, can derail also. Got to exchange with Germans students.
Usually an amazing professor with amazing lectures and real enthusiasm, but this class seemed a little chaotic. Might be because of the online format and changes to the university system during COVID. His lectures are great but always run long because he goes on long but interesting tangents, and he sometimes misses appointments you made together.
KDK is a good guy. He wants you to succeed. But PS 3710 was a failed experiment. I would take a course with KDK again if it were offered in person--but if for some reason he offered an online course in the future, I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole (and I recommend you do the same, coming from your average PS student).
KDK is one of my favorite teachers I've had. He's a fantastic lecturer and great at keeping students engaged and making lectures fun. I'm not a fan of the topic of HON1000, but he really made it worth it. So caring and so willing to help students on an individual level. I would absolutely love to take him again and would recommend him to anyone.
Kevin is really passionate about what he teaches, and that shows greatly during his lectures. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible. He is really fun and good to talk to. He is really good about engaging with students and always makes time to talk with students outside of class. Great guy
KDK is engaging, passionate, and an overall great prof. He genuinely cares about what he's teaching, is easy to reach outside of class, and cares for each individual student. Overall, he's a great guy, and easily one of the most motivated profs at WSU.
Had KDK for my honors lecture and he was a really fun guy. He always had a model of Detroit and tried to get everyone to participate in discussions. There were no actual assignments for this class, you just had to do weekly readings that went with the lecture.
KDK is passionate about what he teaches and cares a lot for his students. He replies very fast to emails and gives lengthy replies meaning he took time to respond. The class itself is alright, sometimes a bit boring when he gives analogies but it isn't terrible; he's definitely a better lecturer than most profs.
Cool professor. Participation is a big grade and so are the papers, and he's kind of a tough grader there. Easy to get a hold of outside of class and even put me in touch with someone in the law department at Wayne because he knew I was going to go into law.
Great lecturer & person. Always went above and beyond to make connections in class, but the material did get boring at times. Enjoyed his lecture for HON & would take him again. There is quite a bit of reading though so come prepared as he really looks for participation & he knows who puts the work in & who doesn't. Fun map of Detroit too!
Really nice person and awesome public speaker. Loved his class.
Amazing lectures. Very sweet and goofy guy
Super fun lectures, best Honors introductory experience I could ask for! I learned a lot in this class, it really prepared me to excel in other courses as well. Plus, Prof KDK is as personable and funny as he is knowledgable.
I thought his lectures were incredible. All classes were all engaging, informative and interesting. He cares deeply about the university, the class, and his students. His powerpoints were also really impressive lol.
It was a big lecture class so you didn't have to show up, but his words makes all your papers for the small class flow better. If you reach out to him he will help you with his best understanding and will even research to answer your questions.
KDK is one of the best teachers I've ever had; he's an incredibly caring individual who is passionate about political science and the city of Detroit. He delivers engaging lectures which broaden one's view of the city as well as the world, and he's always excited to discuss ideas and topics with individual students. I'd recommend him for anyone.
KDK is the best professor I have ever had. I took his Politics of Western Europe class and he is so passionate about the subject and makes boring material interesting. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to be successful. There aren't many assignments and he annotates the reading. If you have the chance to take his class DO IT.
TAKE HIS CLASS! you would do yourself a huge favor. Even if you are not that interested in the topic you will learn so much. He really is the most amazing professor ever- so understanding and supportive. He is creative with his assignments too, we did not have to take any tests or quizzes. I cannot explain how great he is.
I love KDK. His lectures are very engaging. He genuinely cares about his students. I would definitely recommend him as a professor. He will break up his long lectures about halfway through to give a short break.
He is such an amazing and engaging professor. He always made the lectures funny with his slides, and he's very passionate about teaching this class. I can tell he really cares about his students because he always encourages people to ask questions and stick around after class just to talk about anything.
KDK was a great professor. His lectures weren't boring like some others, and staying interested in his class was easy. I would 100% take a class with him again!
He is a very nice guy, you can tell he cares a lot about his students and their success. He is a bit talkative in lectures, making them very long and a bit boring at times, but if you're interested in the course topic his lectures aren't all that bad. He is a good person to ask questions with, as well. He is very educated and has many connections.
LOVE THIS PROFESSOR!! So caring and clearly loves his job. Attendance is not mandatory since it's mainly used to review readings and overarching topics in the class, but I still went to every lecture because of this professor alone. Very entertaining as well.
KDK was my large lecture professor for HON 1000, and I won't lie, I slept through almost every lecture. But even then, KDK is a very nice guy who actually seems enthused by what he's teaching. He turned a boring subject into something entertaining, and really got his students to participate.
Great guy! I only had him for the lecture section of Honors and he did great. Would take his class again!
I didn't really need to go to KDK's lecture because my small section prof never covered his content, but I still went because he's a great guy. Very passionate about the content, very caring for students. Couple friends reached out to ask him questions and he was always really responsive and cared for each individual student. Great lecturer too.
It's a waste of time. You don't need his lectures for the discussions. He talks waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy toooooooooo much. Don't go and you will save a lot of time. He's nice though.
Very energetic professor, I didn't keep up with going to the lectures but they were very informational but a little long. When taking this class there is a smaller section that is the majority of your grade so focus on that class, the only assignment for this class was meeting with an Honors advisor and answering pre and post-meeting questions.
KDK is an amazing lecturer and knows a ton about the history of Detroit; having come from a different area I learned a lot more than I ever knew about the city. Although it's a large class, he cares about each one of the students and is willing to assist them with either class work or research.
Great professor. There is a ton of reading for the course, with a few small assignments (like 2-6 sentence assignments) spread throughout the semester. There are 4 in-class quizzes, graded fairly leniently and he is open to different answers (we grade them in class). Class leads up to the final big paper. Overall great professor, but tough class.
KDK is a great professor but the class itself is very heavy on reading. There were atleast 75-100 pages of reading a week with one quiz every 3 weeks, totaling up to 4 quizzes for the semester. In my opinion, it was too much reading for the length of the semester. The final paper takes up the majority of your grade. Overall, very smart and caring
KDK delivers engaging lectures and fosters a positive learning environment. While the lectures can feel lengthy, he emphasizes key points. There's a lot of reading, but he provides an annotated version to highlight important content. It's clear he genuinely cares about his students and the course. Overall, he's a lovely, dedicated educator.
Had him for the lecture for HON1000, gives very energetic lectures with lots of anecdotes and general humor. Very entertaining and knowledgeable, makes going to lecture fun. Has open office hours in some random places (like a starbucks) or the Honors Library. A whimsical man who I would love to have teach my classes.
Knows how to simplify content and turns it into engaging and understandable slides. Loves to roam around the room, don't strain your neck too hard.
Super caring and enthusiastic about what he does. Basically the physical embodiment of the phrase “learning is fun!”
Excellent. Interactive lectures with well made graphs and visuals. Beware that he will take some attendance of the large section in HON1000.
He's incredibly approachable and always easy to reach via messages or email. His lectures are engaging, filled with interactive slides, pictures, and graphs that make the content come to life. While the lectures can be lengthy at times, keeping your attention might be a challenge, but overall, he's a fantastic instructor. Highly recommend!
make the most of this course. it was the best i could have asked for in my first semester of college. this class is about everything, and professor KDK makes it all meaningful.
Loved KDK for Honors 1000 large section. It is a little bit boring with little personalized attention bc it is a huge class. I think his analogies are interesting and he is able to teach the class with humor and relates to his students. Very open with office hours
Genuinely very sweet and cares about his students. Lectures can be a bit long, but very interesting. Office hours are there to talk to him not only about the class, but more than that. Also, provides a lot of opportunities.
The large-lecture format made class a little boring sometimes, but, overall, KDK is really funny, clearly very passionate about what he does, and made the class worthwhile.
Professor KDK is a passionate lecturer who makes a dry subject engaging. While attendance is mandatory, the class is manageable with the free textbook and helpful resources like Unstuck ai for study prep.
Although he teaches more than 100 students at a time in this course, every student feels respected and treated as an individual. KDK is emotive and inspirational; coming in to class every morning was like watching a good TED talk. I've yet to see any professor match his energy nor do I expect to. 10/10
KDK is an extremely caring, talented professor. His lectures are exciting and informative, and he does a great job making the content connect to students. The workload was manageable: we had a semester project built to emphasize what you learn in the course. I would recommend him to anyone; you'll get a great class and make an amazing connection.
Loved this course, point blank.
He's such a great professor! Super understanding and goes beyond what's required. He def likes his job and his lectures are fun.
Such a wonderful teacher and person to have for a large lecture in HON 1000. Amazing and funny lectures, and he explains everything so well. I had an issue with trying to get my required meeting done that is required for the course, and he did everything in his power to try and make sure it was amended. Very caring; highly recommend.
When I first read the course description I thought this class was going to be about taking action to change Detroit. Like helping out at soup kitchens, and writing letters to government officials. This is a history course in disguise. I wouldn't have taken it if I knew. KDK is an amazing professor and very passionate, but this course wasn't for me.
