I had Dr. Early at OU and he was the greatest. He has some of the most memorable stories. Plus he makes you stand up when you speak. He was one of my favorite professors and always will be.
He's got alot of stories. He goes off subject quite a bit, which may or may not be interesting. He has an attendance policy. If you dont miss you get like 5 points.
He has lots of interesting stories. He also goes out of his way to help, for tests you can get him to have a study session before hand with other students where he goes over everything. He does have an attendence policy but the class is enjoyable.
Very entertaining and gives good information. I did awesome all year long in his class (90% and above, but did not put a lot of effort into the last paper and got a B in the class, scandalous!
Late by 15 mins to 50 min classes. Arrogant and snotty. Unstructured lectures. Too many books to buy for one class. He knows what he's talking about, but presents it in a way that attempts to put him in a glorifying light. Pronounces words strangely; not sure if for effect, or just because.
Agreed, he is quite pompous..makes you spend ridiculous amount of money on three books that I could have gone without! I went to class everyday and worked very hard and still got a B! He does not believe in giving A's by the way. Would not recommend him.
VERY,VERY Hard grader, Bias towards minority students. Tests very hard, no review for tests, Term paper assignments very unclear. AVOID this Teacher.
Hard on grading
Had Dr. Early at OU, and he is still as good here as he was there. Pay attention, do the reading, and show up. You get the grade you earn.
I don't understand how he could have bias against minority stidents, when he himself is considered a member of a minority. If you aren't willing to go to class, don't bother taking any of his. You actually have to show up to pass.
His class was easy when I read the material, showed up, and wrote "real" essays on his all-essay quizzes-- he doesn't want short answer replies. Tests are multiple choice, mostly easy with a more difficult true and false. Early's an interesting lecturer and brings personality into it (without opinions). Bark is worse than bite; easy essay grader.
Avoid him at all cost. He is very biast when grading. If he likes you, he will give you an A, and if he doesnt, he will give you a C. He is off topic 99% of his time. Unclear of the subject, always late for class by 30-40 minutes, and he is unprepared for class. Its a shame for UM-D that he is the CJ Director.
Brilliant teacher, but I agree with the other posts identifying him as pompous. Early likes to talk about himself and drop names. Also, what's with picking a student to attack as **** in front of the class for an entire class? Never have I seen such a thing, nor do I know what we learned from it.
Early is THE WORST teacher at UM-D. He doesnt know what he's talking about, and he is always unprepared for lecture. It is a waste of tuition money. Why did UM-D hired him? IS UM-D that desperate?I heard that Oakland University was VERY happy to let him go, and they had refused for a long time to make him the director of Criminal Justice.
What a waste!!!!!!!
The worst proff ever had at UM-D.
Amazing professor. Does a great job of teaching real life lessons. as for class material you better read the book and show up to lectures. He challenges your views but in truth he only does so to test you. He enjoys it when students argue with him or voice their own oppinion, simply put, dont take him if you get your feelings hurt easily.
Not happy with his class. Interesting and friendly person, not a great teacher. I studied hard for his tests and quizes and still did not do well. Goes off-topic frequently, does not discuss much course material, pronounces words incorrectly. Entertaining, but not worth my tuition.
Dont bother taking him. he is always late for class, and he is a total waste of your tuition $$$$. Doesnt lecture on the subject. Always off subject.
he is always late, pronounces words wrong, doesn't care about his students, he is like a kid in middle school who always gossiping and he plays favorites--2 people can do the same amount of work and grade but he will give the one he likes an A and the one he doesn't a C. he is predjudiced against certain stereotypes. don't waste your time. AVOID
he is the worst teacher you will ever have. i don't know what u of m is thinking. he has no sort of grading scale whatsoever...it is only if he likes you and if he does not like you..he will try to fail you. watch and see...you will get 100% on multiplechoice tests but for the essay tests, he will fail you because he can just say answer is wrong
This man should not be a teacher:late every single day keeps students way over time every class grades tests papers&projects extremely subjectively&then refuses to discuss the grade w/you except to act like you’re an idiot for daring to defy his opinion. Lectures go way off on personal tangents. Dosn't return e-mails&phone calls. Very poor prof.
I did horrible in his class his test are ok, except when it comes to his true in false questions he tries to trick you. The multiple choice where far out the easiest. But those quizzes killed me esp. because they were all essay and you have to make sure your opinion is the same as his if not you wont get a passing grade. And yes he is always late!
A pretty good professor, but very subjective. Likes to badger people and put them on the spot. His exams are straight forward and quizzes help prepare you for the exam. Always late
Worst professor I have ever had at UMD. Books are useless and so are his assignments. Either agree with him or you are wrong. Don't take any classes with Prof. Early
You will need to read textbooks. His lectures are more conversive and don't cover much of the test material. This class felt like a self-study class with a mandatory class discussion. His exams are okay, but the essays can be tricky. He's really smart and knows his stuff but it does seem like he singles students out.
I did not get along with professor Early. He seemed to have a very elitist mentality and he tended to single out students. For me, he did a poor job of creating an ideal learning environment in his classroom. I do not recommend professor Early!
Worst professor ever! The way he teaches is he reads a passage from the book and picks on someone to interpret it. For test review day, he gave us certain pages from the book to focus on and NONE of it was on the exam. It was the first C I ever got at UMD and I'm a Senior. I only learned from the books. Didn't learn anything from him.
Some professors enjoy holding power over their students, inciting shame, and delighting in stories of how they've failed people for trivialities. Such teachers shouldn't teach. Early shouldn't be teaching; draw your own conclusions. Another point: he witholds grading info past reasonable deadlines.
Quizzes were hard. He only talked about 10% of the material in class. Almost didn't make it through his class. he pick on certain people and thinks we are learning through casual conversation. Not a good professor. I recommend taking some else. He will bring down your GPA.
Great professor! You will actually have to read the textbooks but you walk out feeling like you learned alot! Teaches on a more casual level than the normal everyday lecture! Worth every cent of your tuition!!!
Prof. Early was sweet. I got all A's on his tests & on his quizzes too. I got one B+ on his first quiz (but that was the first one). But I did study a lot for them. You get the grade you earn & his lectures are insightful. You do need to read the book on your own. He scratches the surface of topics during lecture but you have to read further.
Interesting lectures. Great debates. Sometimes the conversations would get off-topic but Early lets them take natural turns. If you know how to properly take notes, you will be fine. If you can't figure out what is important info and what isn't- that's your own fault.
Avoid at all costs, find a way not to take any of his classes. I learned the hardway. Be careful or you'll get a bad grade.
Professor Early is an amazing professor. He knows what he is talking about, based on his experience, and his resume. Pay attention in class, read the book which is really crucial, and come prepared on test days. I should of got a B, but instead I got a B+. Very fari in grading as well.
Excellent teacher and scholar. He really cares about his students. The best professor that I ever had!!
He's by far the worst criminal justice professor at UM-D and the worst I've ever had. He's extremely arrogant and of no help.
Early is an average professor. His class is interesting at times, but it is never because of him that it is interesting. The people in class make it or break it. Make sure you read the book and know the material inside out, because he will mess with you when it comes to exams and quizzes.
Dr. early id one of the best professors that I've ever had. He is knowledgeable and takes the time to help those who want help. he does not tolerate students that do not put forth the effort needed to get passing grade. I had excellent experience.
Professor was clear and concise, very friendly and keeps the topic interesting by providing analogies that we find fun.
Dr. Early made the class very interesting by sharing personal life events that correlated with the current topic. Kind of hard on grading the essays. If you don't incorporate the exact terms used (every one of them) you will be marked down anywhere from 5-20% of your grade.
He's truly an amazing prof. who can open your eyes to aspects of society you didn't know exist. On top of that he is extremely lively and will keep you interested all semester long.
Awful professor. 1/4 of your grade is based on group projects/papers. You have a group video that is graded based on acting and entertainment value, not content. He uses almost all of the class time to tell stories unrelated to the subject. Stay away unless you wanted to be stressed the whole semester.
This prof is intriguing. Your going to either love him or hate him. His group projects are easy, the big video project took my group 6 hours to do. His written quizzes might as well be summerian, but multiple choice exams not so bad. Has a good sense of humor and interesting. Don't dare miss a class EVER.
Early tells stories more than stays on topic. He is entertaining but not too helpful, when going to office hours we will ensure you that you will improve, but does not really help. His tests focus on the people, their theories, and vocab.
early is interesting. he does tend to get off topic and i believe he is at times a tough grader. however, you learn alot and every lecture is very interesting
You have to come to class. In class he is very interesting. Do NOT expect him to return e-mails. He won't. Don't miss a test. He does NOT care what's going on in your life. He thinks his class is the most important thing in your world. As a teacher he's wonderful. It's just hard when life hits you. Tough Grader.
He is a terrible professor. He judges faster than anyone else and can never stay on topic. Tough grader and his quizzes are based on what he talks about not the book!
Very helpful. Class may seem intimidating, but if you stick it through, study, and participate, you will do great. I enjoyed class discussions and debates. Quizes are much harder than tests. Tests are true/false and very tricky though. Overall an excellent teacher. Take advantage of the extra credit assignments!! Highly recommend taking his course!
He's only intimidating the first week Most say the quizzes (essay style) are more difficult than the exams (multiple choice) He looks for specific terms and hints pretty well at what you should study also expects participation He offers multiple extra credit assignments, take advantage of them he lets conversation flow off topic too
One of the best teachers ever! Take my advice! He is intimating the first week but once you get to know him he is extremely nice and caring for his students. He is very intelligent and is hilarious! Can get off topic sometimes but you are still learning about something interesting. Keeps class very entertaining! Recommend!
Test are very easy, but quizzes are essay style and its easy to not to do well on them if you don't remember exactly what he says in class. You could answer a question right out of the book and be wrong if it wasn't what he told you in lecture. Constantly provoked arguments between students. Tense environment. Not very fun.
Prof. Early is ok. He is one of those instructors that always calls you out to answer questions. Also, his tests - essays especially - have to be exactly from his lectures to get full credit. Tough grader but not too bad.
I enjoyed this class so much. Anyone who calls this class "hard" is just lazy. One thing I didnt like was doing the big video project. For the quizes, make sure you write ALOT of EXAMPLES. Dont just answer the question. Exams are tricking. but I came out with an A- as a freshman. His class is very interesting and he cares about his students.
A challenging yet amazing professor one of the best UofM has to offer. Step out of your comfort zone and get ready to be challenge with your concept of thought. I learned so much information from this professor. He is not recommended for lazy students.
Very hard grader. Not very clear.
Not gonna lie, Kevin Early is a hard.. but he is a GREAT professor. If you really want to learn, take him! He opens your eyes to so many things, not only with this subject. Attend lectures, read, and study and you should be fine. Definitely HIGHLY recommend
Kevin Early is great!! You learn so much in his class. However, if you're a lazy student, I do not recommend this class. He is not an easy professor - you must put in 100% effort if you want an A. Don't be intimated though, I recommend everybody taking at least one of his courses!!!
Okay so I checked this site prior to registering for a Sociology class and I read all bad writings about Professor Early... However, something in my gut told me to stick to him. He is honestly one of the most inspiring teachers I've had EVER. If you pay attention, you'll do well, If you're respectable, you'll do well. WOULD RECOMMEND!!!!!
I sat in this class before and figured he was a good prof. He is welcoming and very worldly. Been all around the world and back. After this experience and finding out who he is, I see him as very personable and, even though he might be difficult, is a very helpful person as well. His persona illuminates someone who wants to make a difference here.
DON'T DO IT! You will spend the entire semester guessing what he wants & hitting yourself for taking the class. He gets agitated if you ask questions & has an entirely subjective grading scale. Don't bother studying for the test- he just gives C's or lower to everyone. His stories are cool but made-up & irrelevant to class. Waste of money.
Wow, one of the worst professors ever. He's insanely unclear on what he wants from students, and attendance is mandatory even though he spends more time arguing with other students than teaching. I often walked out of his class without learning anything. His essays and tests are extremely difficult. Do not take this professor! You will regret it.
Professor Early is not easy by any means. I would have had a 78% in his class if it wasnt for all the extra credit he offered. Which, he offers a lot every seamster. He does grade very hard, however, if you plan to go to graduate school and cant pull a passing grade in this class then good luck. I learned a lot and worked very hard. Good Luck
DO NOT take this professor. You can try your hardest, he will not give you an A on anything. Does not respond to emails. Is not in his office for office hours. Shows up late to class everyday. This is my last year of college, and he is by far the worst professor I have ever had. I repeat, DO NOT take him.
Dr.Early is an amazing, very well spoken, approachable and funny professor. I enjoyed his teaching style very much. He knows his stuff. You have to come to class. You HAVE to read, there's no way around that. Take advantage of ALL the E/C that he offers. Talk to him if you have trouble. It's NOT an easy class though. I will be taking him again!
I am writing this two decades after having him as a teacher. I can honestly say that he is the foundation of my world view. I moved away from Sociology and Criminal Justice, but the lessons that he taught have stuck with me. I now have a MBA and multiple professional certifications… but his classes were far more valuable.
Dr. Early is by far one of the best in his field. He's extremely astute, and a fantastic lecturer. His class is not easy and you will be required to do the readings on the syllabus if you intend to pass. I had to bust my hump to do as well as I'm doing in his class. He will definitely impact the way you look at the Criminal Justice System!
He is very knowledgeable but unclear on what exactly he wants so ask questions. A lot of class time is spend debating over popular topics instead of going over material in the text books that you must read to pass the exams. His exams are HARD!! He gives lots of extra credit IF the class needs it but he wont give out many A's.
Prof. Early is one of the most interesting and engaging professors. Discussions make the class a little tense but it's a great experience overall. I'm really glad I took the class despite some of the negative reviews. Only problem was the group work. ALL group work except for the tests. I would've gotten an A if everything wasn't group work.
Kevin Early is a mainly CRJ and SOC teacher at UMD. A very tough grader, attending the class is a must, if you dont, youll probably fail as he gives you credit for simply being there. His exams are just essays done in a blue book. Buying the book is also a must. Overall he is a great teacher, well informed and can be quite hilarious.
Overall, his class was amazing! The group assignments were annoying at times, but you learn to get over them. He can be jumpy at times during lectures, but once he gets a debate going the class is very enjoyable. The debates make the class very interesting and often calls out students to spark more debate. He's very wise and a great prof. Take him!
Dr. Early is knowledgeable about the material, but he thinks that we are all experts as well. Often condescending and the directions on his exams and papers are often unclear. You will learn a lot, but it is by no means an easy course. I probably wont take a class with him again.
His class was amazing had it first thing in the morning and it was great because the class was anything but boring. He knows how to keep everyone engaged and his group discussions are very interesting. My only problem was the group projects, at times it was difficult to work around everyone's schedule to get project done.
Great professor. Absolutely knows the topic and is obviously passionate about it. You must read the book before class, he'll call you out if you don't. Also, must read it carefully for tests, he pulls random facts for test questions. If you get 100% on a test he'll either take you +1 out to dinner or give you like $600 cash your choice, no joke.
I'll be honest I never read the book he assigned to the class and I currently have a solid B without the extra credit he hands out. A lot of people complained in my class that he wasn't clear on what to study for the test but thank god for the SI because her reviews were the only thing I used. I wish he didn't take attendance that is very annoying.
Dr. Early is an asset to the university. His dedication to student achievement helped me to make the transition from HFCC and also more importantly assisted in my understanding of the expectation of being part of the University of Michigan community. I will look forward to the opportunity to take additional classes with Dr. Early.
A lot of work for an intro class. He thinks he knows it all and can act very arrogant. The group projects are a hassle, especially the last one in which you are required to form a group and make a 30 minute movie. I am an A student, & I ended up receiving an A in the class, but I had to work hard for it. Stay away, definitely would not take again.
I took Dr. Early in Fall 2015. He was specific and funny at times. His lectures are very informative. He is a great guy and I would take another course with him as the instructor. Very professional and never a dull moment in his class. Tests are somewhat difficult only if you have not looked at the material. Would definitely recommend.
Lecture heavy Lots or reading 1 group assignment Essay & M.C test and exams He's a great professor very knowledgeable
One of the best professors I've had.
Early is a great guy, and an awesome teacher. He is very knowledgeable in everything he presents, and wants you to get as much out of the course as possible. This requires reading outside of class and taking decent lecture notes. He has a cool sarcastic sense of humor that some students don't understand, it is pretty entertaining. Tough Grader....
Honestly, the man is confused as to what his requirements are as a professor. His teaching style is arrogant and absurd and he relies heavily on grading students for their effort in group projects. The heaviest grades is a 30 minute video that he even admits needs to be edited wonderfully in order to receive a great grade for a sociology class....
Dr. Early has a lot of knowledge for what he is teaching but wastes time talking about his life history. Sometimes we need to finish a lecture for an exam but he just spends hours talking about something else. Be ready todo some reading and participating. He is a very nice and funny professor but i would recommend once taking him.
Dr. Early is very arrogant. He is not helpful outside of class. He will not respond to emails, and calls people out in class. Half the time he isn't in his office during office hours.
Tons of group papers that have no rubric. Grade is based on his opinion only, outside of exams. Lectures tend to go off topic into his own stories. SI will fill in off topic lectures. Exams are multiple choice and true/false. You will need to read. Overall, friendly environment in the classroom.
Would not recommend taling this teacher again. He has great knowledge of this course but instead of spending time on the lectures for the exams, he spends it on his life stories which are no help. He doesnt answer emails which is unhelpful and exams based on lectures and readings from the book. He is friendly, but taking him once was enough.
Early is a great guy, and is very knowledgeable when it comes to sociology however he is an extremely tough grader and his requirements are unclear at times. I would not take another class with him.
Learned more about his personal life and his views on the world rather than information of the course. Barely goes over information in class and the tests have names of obscure Sociologists you will never care about. He doesn't realize that students take more than three classes in college so he gives group projects. He is ignorant and arrogant
Early is a great person and his stories about his life were so interesting and enjoyable. The only problem is he pulls random facts from the test book and doesn't inform you on what to study. No one was really able to pass and I wish he would tell you what to study or at least go over some of the textbook in class
Professor Early does not grade fairly at all. Every assignment is a group project where your project is only as good as your strongest link. I was graded for a group project based on the abilities of two students with mental disabilities. His rubrics are not clear. His lectures are only personal stories and no material you need for exams.
I wanted to enjoy this course. However, after the first few lectures, it became clear that the only learning that would occur would be at home by reading the textbook. Lectures were so off-topic it was laughable. Tests were directly from the book, leaving me wondering why I was paying money to learn from a book at home.
Never take this professor unless you have too. He is arrogant and talks down to students. He grades you unfairly on your presentations and his lectures are meaningless. He goes on tangents about irrelevant topics that does not help with the test. No study guides. Worst professor I ever had. I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Awesome guy absolutely loved having him as my professor. Great class and actually made me want to go to class everyday.
I always feel bad rating professors bad, but this was the most frustrating class I've taken. No clear criteria for projects or papers and he's a tough grader. He was not willing to answer any questions and even told the class he would not respond to any questions we emailed him for our final paper. Lectures were interesting, but all irrelevant info
Dr. Early is very knowledgeable on the topic of Criminology, BUT he doesn't really give clear instructions for his projects, will not take questions on the final exam via email, and goes off on tangents during class. Read the books (there are 2) if you want to pass. Final exam is brutal. 7 page paper take home. Avoid if you can.
Man I loved Kevin Earlys class. It was probably the highlight of my semester just to go. Although many people would disagree with me about how he teaches, I think its really helpful. His exams are easy to do well on if you actually read the book, many people complained about his exams but its obvious they did not put the necessary work in. 10/10
The exams are tricky. Study, you will do fine. There is group work. You get to pick the topic. Final is an essay. He does answer questions about the final but you have to ask by a certain time. He clearly stated he will not respond to emails after the exam is issued (ethical reasons). Gives extra credit. Nice bonus for upper level course
very passive aggressive in his emails and that's if he even bothers to answer you.
Professor doesn't teach at all or set up his own course. Doesn't answer questions at all, students basically had to hunker together to help eachother with everything. Basically just read a textbook.
Hands down the best professor at the university.
Worst human to live, does not care about students can't even give a direct answers to questions and is very discriminatory towards Arabs had the worst experience with him
Terrible professor DO NOT TAKE HIM
Dr. Early was awesome! I love his stories! He is a very interesting person and so is the class. I think anyone who complains about him is just looking for an easy A!
Amazing professor! Put in work and you will get the grade you deserve!
I took this class online and the only way to contact him is through email. We would need to email him to make an appointment to talk to him. The problem with this was that he didn't reply to his emails at all, which made communication very hard. The class was easy, but the professor was hard to communicate with.
Terrible teacher. Does not answer emails. Sets the test-taking time from 1-5 as if students don't have lives and responsibilities. I had to rush my quizzes and exams, which lowered my grade to a B+, all because this man limited the test-taking time to 1-5, which makes no remote sense. He doesn't curve even with less than .3% to an A.
Professor Early runs a challenging but rewarding class. If you put in the work, the exams are manageable. The textbook is helpful, and unstuck AI can be a great supplement for study prep. Overall, a worthwhile course.
I took 2 SOC classes with him for dual enrollment and he was one of the worst professors I've ever been taught by. His class lectures covered almost nothing about the quizzes, the only assignments he gave. Also, he is the WORST with emails. He doesn't reply for the longest and when he does he has an attitude about it. He is so unprofessional.
One of the worst professors I've had. Listen to the other reviews bc I made the mistake of taking him. It took me 3 WEEKS to set up a Zoom meeting with him, just for him not to join the meeting. He then called me on WhatsApp 30 mins later?? He is very irresponsible and makes it seem like it's ur fault bc he does not want to own up to it. DO NOT TAKE
I have emailed him a lot (forgot to take an exam bc I also had a chem exam the same day) but haven't received any response. So if you have a problem regarding the class, GOOD LUCK because the lack of communication is 💀 Otherwise the class is very easy since the assignments are only quizzes and exams.
Dr. Early is one of the best professors I've had. Super knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely cares about his students. Lectures are clear and engaging. Highly recommend!
