Very understanding about absences (with good reasons, of course). He is also willing to listen to your suggestions/points-of-view regarding classroom topics. Also willing to review papers and listen to what you intended to say that may have been unclear.

I couldn't stand his voice, but his tests were pretty easy and he was an easy paper grader. His lectures were very organized and he showed a good movie in class.

He is really interesting and makes the class fun. Relates a lot of the material to real life situations. Tests are easy if you take good notes. Only 2 assignments that were grading very easy to get a good grade. Also gives Extra Credit which is a plus!!!

I think K. Ervin is a great professor; one of my faves here. Very understanding, as well as a great presenter with great ideas. He challenges you to think differently, and gives many sides to each issue discussed. I would reccommend this class to anyone. A great guy & soc prof.

i hated this guy. he speaks like an infomercial salesman and makes rude comments to students who arent paying attention or who leave early. tests should have been easier considerring the nature of the course. very hard to pay attention in his class.

Loved this class, I took it two years ago and it was Mr. Ervin class that helped me figure out my major. Very interesting and fun paper topics. Good extra credit opportunities as well!

This class was too easy. I felt guilty that for the little work that I did I recieved such a high grade. The class seemed like a lot of generalizations anyways.

Mr. E is an awesome teacher and he make the material interesting to learn. As long as you go to class you should be able to pass with flying colors.

Overall good teacher who gets into what he is talking about. He is a teacher that does not put people asleep because he makes his lectures exciting. Overall good intro class and a good person overall.

I took the honors part of the class, and it was easy. Honors gets three extra 2 page papers to write, which are all easy and graded easily, and have to write at least 4 pages on the 2 regular papers that the rest of the class does. The exams are a little bit tricky, but they are curved. Honors or no honors You should have no problem getting an A

Awesome guy! The best part of class is how he has his hands in his pocket during the WHOLE class, but it's not even his whole hand, it's just his fingers, and acting all casual about everything. It's great!

Ervin is the best professor i've ever had. i loved him, i didn't miss ONE day of his class. I enjoyed waking up to make my first class of the day. I'm actually going to find out what he teaches so I can get him as many times as possible....he was truly inspirational.

I really enjoyed his class. The material is very interesting and you can tell he enjoys what he teaches. The class is only graded by tests so it is important to at least look through the book and notes, but I thought they were fair. I not only highly recommend the class but also to take Ervin. Great teacher!

Nice guy and he was able to compact so much material into the semester without overburdening us. The tests are easy (if you study-a little) and the short assignments are even easier. Great teacher, take him if you can get the oppertunity. He loves to teach and it shows.

He is a great teacher. I took his 170 and 270 classes. They are great. He makes it interesting. Not a hard grader at all. Show up, take notes, YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ, and study for tests. He made me want to switch my major. I wish he taught more.

Great Professor. I had him for Soci 170 and loved him so much that I took him for 270. Have to go to class but the lectures are interesting. The tests aren't that bad, it helps to read but you can do ok with out reading. Great class and he does a great job getting the class to interact. Not much work outside of class and only a few papers for class

Great teacher! He is so nice and helpful. Really made class interesting and cares about your opinions. He really knows his stuff and makes it fun to learn. I hated Sociology before I took his class. Go to class otherwise you won't understand a lot of things. You have to take notes! Reading the chapters helps a lot too!

Extremely good professor, always willing to help students. Exams all multipule choice. Final exam is non-comprehensive. Attendance is mandantory, but he is interesting enough to keep your attention. He takes normal course material and relates it directly to your life. One of the best teachers I had this semester.

Easiest teacher/class I have ever had in 4 years of college. Just go to class and take notes and you're set. You also don't need to read the book. If you're not a moron, just going to class will enable you to answer the test questions based on the text book.

Kevin is an awesome teacher. He provides very organized notes that you don't even have to open your textbook. However, 25% of the exam questions is from the reading so read the pts he didn't cover. There are also two very easy papers in which he explicitly explains what he wants in each paragraph. Lots of extra credit too. Guaranteed A or B!!!

Mr. Ervin is a great teacher. His class is pretty easy, and he makes it interesting by relating it to real life events. Two papers are very simple, he tells you exactly what to do. As long as you go to class, you will do very well.

Professor Ervin has the ability to really make the material interesting. Even though it is a note-taking/lecture class it isn't hard to get through. Attendance is counted but he is fair with how he factors it in to the total grade. 2 papers very easy, tests as east as long as you look over the notes first.

Simply an amazing teacher. Makes class not only very interesting but easy to comprehend. Most of the girls have a crush on him. I would recommend him. Very organized and devoted to his students. Once in a while gets out of topic but that's what the class great. His funny and likes to make the class laugh. The type of teacher you will never forget.

Great class. Ervin knows a great deal about the informations he teaches and knows how to keep the class interested. It is lecture/discussion based and although it's clear to see his view points, he cares about the opinions and ideas of students. Make sure to attend regularly for attendance points. I'd definitely reccomend him!

Delivers clear, well-prepared lectures. Material covered is very elementary. Difficulty of class is consistent with that of high school or even junior high. Very easy exams. There are three tests(150 points),a little challenging.Two papers(50 points).Class attendance(25 points).SOCQRL assignment(15 points),once you do it,full credit.Two extra credit papers(10 points).Total:240 points.Sometimes he will change grading scale due to class level before the end of semester.

Ervin is a great teacher. He explains all the material needed for tests. He is very understanding if you miss class. He is probably the best teacher i have had at NIU thus far.

Kevin was a great teacher. He is a super nice guy and keeps the class relaxed and fun. He hand writes all of his notes on the board and doesn't provide study guides, but he is a great teacher. I would highly recommend him to everyone.

I had Ervin in Spring '12, 9am MWF. He has a great sense of humor, and even though you don't feel like you're learning, you are. Classes consisted of taking notes in the beginning, and moved towards a discussion at the end. The last exam was converted to the Final Exam. He's a great guy with a good attitude about him. I highly recommend his course.

My favorite class ever! I have even been trying to find him whenever I sign up for upper level classes. Id love for him to be my teacher again! he's super funny, teaches you in a way that relates to you, easy grader, and He is very accomadating. Take his class!

Mr. Ervin is a very nice guy. Now, I took a sociology class in high school, so his class was super easy. But, I did learn a few new things too. His tests aren't that hard, he pulls most of the questions from his hand written lecture notes, some about statistics in class, and some from the book. He is a lax grader on the essay assignments, too.

He's awesome! The class consists of 2 essays, 3 tests, and 2 EC papers that are easy! His tests are straight from the book & his notes.

This class is SUPER easy, but not easy to the point where you don't learn anything. You are graded based on two 2-page papers (which he'll give you full points just for following directions), 3 exams (I got an A on each one without ever opening the book, and attendance points. He also offers two extra credit papers.

I really enjoyed his class. He lectures every class but keeps it interesting. There are a couple tests and two papers. The papers are really easy if you follow his rubric he gives you all the points. He takes attendance everyday and there is extra credit. His tests are pretty easy but you need to study for them to do well.

Mr. Ervin is a great teacher! Every class is a lecture, but it's easy to pay attention because of how he presents the material. I take his 9AM class and it's still pretty interesting. There are two papers, three tests, and two extra credit opportunities. None of which are too hard if you read and pay attention in class. Great class!

Easy A. Lectures are reading off power points, but everything is common sense. Offers extra credit so you can slack on the final. Grabs some questions from the book, but exams are still pretty easy. Very open guy and you can tell he enjoys teaching.

I loved this class, and Professor Ervin gave me insight to a topic I had no previous contact to. There are 3 exams, no quizzes. Extra credit essays. The topic is interesting and he makes lectures easy. Stress free class. If you come to class, then you won't have a problem. you don't need the textbook,but he puts some questions on tex test from it.

Kevin is an amazing professor who's lectures I actually looked forward to going to. He does take attendance and does not post notes online so showing up to class and taking good notes is a must. There are not many exams, only 3 and 2 papers. He is an easy grader if you do whats asked of you. I enjoyed this class and would definitely recommend him.

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He cares so much about the material and is very engaged while teaching. He is very understanding of individual's needs. I can't recommend him enough. My only issue is that there are very few assignments and points in the class. Doing poorly on one thing can drop your grade significantly.

The best professor Ive had so far at NIU! He is passionate about his work and wants his students to do well. You will pass his class if you pay attention and turn things in on time. I took this online and if you hate writing papers, you wont pass the class. You write one paper a week and that is the assignment. Highly recommend Kevin Ervin!

If you follow the prompts to the papers you'll get a 100% on them. The tests are easy if you get definitions from chapters in the book. His class was fairly easy and you would get 25 points for just attending class.

Very cool professor. 2 papers which you basically get a 100% on as long as you follow the guidelines. 3 easy exams including a noncumulative final. Just study the powerpoints and do the flashcards at the end of the chapter on the online textbook. One online assignment that is very easy. Attendance is mandatory and 2 extra credit papers 5pts each.

I had an online course with Kevin and he was always clear about what was needed for assignments. One assignment a week. Posts the slides for each chapter. Gives great feedback on assignments. Really fast at grading. Overall, I would take any class with Kevin again.

This was my 2nd course with Ervin. The greatest professor at NIU. Gives you 100% on both the papers as long as you follow guidelines. Exams are 60 question multiple-choice and very easy. Fill out the study guide as he lectures. Study the powerpoints, bolded terms in the book, and study guide 10 days before the exam and you'll get an A easily.

SOCI 270 with Professor Ervin was a great class. There were several papers throughout the semester, but they were not extremely time consuming. He gives great feedback on work, and he grades it in a timely manner. This is one of the best classes I've taken so far.

Professor was extremely informational about all topics, was amazing to listen to during lectures, and would provide you with tons of examples. Something that I would warn you about is that there are not many chances to get points if you mess up. But all of his work is easy.

I have to give him credit, he is by far one of the BEST professors I have seen here at NIU. He is a nice grader and is very understanding if something is going on. He responds to emails quick and answers all questions! He even took the time to learn everyone's names. If you are looking to take his class, just do it, you won't regret it!

Great professor for online, lectures are very straightforward and tests are directly based off of lecture materials. He presents the material in a very simple and concise manner, and he's willing to meet with you to discuss any questions you might have. There isn't a lot of course work so its easy to slip up, but he is very understanding.

I took Professor Ervin's 8 week course. It did consist of more writing that I thought it would have, but all of them took me no longer than an hour to complete. There were also weekly quizzes but all of the answers are in his PowerPoints which he lets you use. There is no midterm or final which was nice. Good professor, would take again.

Excellent lectures, and he provides PowerPoints for each chapter. Weekly quizzes and the test for each unit are open note, online, and you can take them remotely. There are two papers, a simple research assignment, and if you're in the honors section two extra papers (fairly easy to complete). Great class and professor!

I've had Kevin for two classes so far, literally the best teacher ever, he is so understanding of students' lives and mental health. He'll push back due dates and overall is just so nice and informational. Class was a piece of cake, highly recommend.

Kevin Ervin is a great and caring instructor. I took his SOCI270 course as a prereq for Criminology Certificate and Honors requirements. Very caring and friendly individual. Attendance not mandatory though encouraged for extra credit, and the papers are fairly easy and not time consuming. If you need an easy class for your degree, take Ervin's.

Kevin is seriously the best professor I have ever had. He gives amazing lectures, is super insightful, and an overall amazing guy. The honors section has two extra papers but you get the entire semester to do them (they are easy). He is a very easy grader and the textbook he uses is around $60 used. Please take his class, I doubt you will regret it

My favorite professor at NIU. He enjoys teaching the subject and cares about his students. He gives very interesting lectures every class period and doesn't give out too difficult of assignments. He's not picky with papers and gives great feedback. He appreciates the people who actually do show up to his class since it's not mandatory to come.

Kevin is caring and an incredible professor. As a future educator, he is everything I want to be. Just wants you to succeed & I appreciated it. For the online class he released all of the material except for exams so you can work at your own pace mostly. Easy grader as long as you follow instructions & demonstrate critical thinking. Take his class!

Overall, an easy and thoughtful professor. Nothing difficult to expect in his class, follow the syllabus and do everything on time, and you'd pass the course without fail. Just don't laugh or speak out of turn, or he will call you out.

Genuinely great. Attendance is encouraged (especially with random extra credit for attending class), but all materials you need to do well, like lecture videos and slides, are in Blackboard. His lectures are engaging and explain content well. Also, grading criteria for the assignments are incredibly clear and fair and his grading reflects that.
