Not much of a help. If you don't know it, does little to make you understand (D)
dont listen to the other comments this gut is the best acc teacher at wcu
No Comments
He was terrible. he may be the best acc guy at the school- but that sux.i went to him like 6 times for help and each time he told me "i dont understand why you dont understand this".. i got an F. the Jerk off.
One of the best teachers I've had. His course is hard, but you will learn the material. He is disciplined and does not cut any slack - what's wrong with that - unless you are a crybaby!
very smart guy, easy to follow him in the classroom and doing the homework is easy, but try to take one of his impossible tests, you can use your book and notes, but it doesn't help, worst teacher in the ACC dept.
if you want an arrogant teacher who answers questions with an "i dont know" response, Flynn is for you. He is honestly a smart guy but he one of those people who can't relate to students and his attitude is aweful.
Worst teacher in the Dept. Try the WORST teacher in the world. Good for you Kevin, you can make a hard test.
I hate Tax!!! He is too smart to be a teacher. Tax is just too difficult subject to study. a lot of twistings in his exam. seriously impossible tests.
Was no pushover, test were difficult but fair, open book. His grading was also fair. He is a prof. that will make you think. Glad I took his courses. Learned A TON!
one of the worst professors i've ever had. it may seem like you understand the material while he goes over it in class but be prepared to do horribly on the exams. he makes them insanely difficult.
Dr. Flynn is a teacher who challenges you, calls on you when you don't want to be, but overall a great teacher. He makes you think, not just memorize!
He doesnt care about you. He makes the material harder then it needs to be.
Was very helpful but the tests are very hard. Need to study, study, study. And do all work that you can get your hands on.
Flynn is a difficult teacher, but a great teacher. He actually teaches unlike other profs that make you learn material on your own. The exams are difficult, but passable. He is an **** & sexy in an old man way, but we're not there to socialize with him. He hasn't kept up with current tax issues. He knows what's in the text and not much more.
classees are the two hardest at WC flynn is a good professor but makes things to hardeven if you work so hard still may only barley make a Ci am glad i am done w/ these courses
He is decent in the fact that he teaches the material, is willing to answer questions in class, but he is NOT approachable outside of the classroom and offers little help or insight into the actual exams. He is anal-retentive & not current on tax law, only the text book. No room for leniency. Good luck--you'll need it. Found him to be useless.
If you don't have the back tests to his class you are not going to pass.
Flynn actually teachs, which is alot more than i can say for the other windbags in the accounting department. His tests are hard so be prepared to spend hours and hours studying.
It is disgusting to see how clueless Flynn is. If you are a CHEATER,you'll do fine. The tests are insanely difficult with not enough time. There is no curve b/c the kids who are getting the top scores have test banks and old tests. If you are an honest student, you'll get ripped off.
Whoever wrote the comment b4 this is a moron. Obviously to stupid to do well in the course. I never cheated or looked at tests banks and I did really well in his course. I did it the hard way days and days in the library.
Go to his class and take notes. Good notes are very helpful in exams! Good luck!
His tests are pretty much impossible not matter how much you study. He comes off as a nice guy but can be a total jerk.
Worst prof at WCU. He's so clueless about material and can be a complete jerk. Tests are impossible no matter how much you study. He makes you feel stupid if you don't understand something.
To get a good grade dont miss class, take clear notes, ask questions, and do all of the extra credit. Study notes and make sure you can do every HW problem, if you do these things and cant get a C or better, acc isnt for you. Backtests help if you already understand what your doing. They dont gaurantee a good grade. Hardest ACC class at WCU!
I study my butt off so who ever said that you are stupid if you do not pass is the stupid one. I am a mature adult who has worked in the real world for so many years and this professor is the worst I ever had. So please stop kissing butt and be honest. He is not good at all.
He's the worst teacher ever.He doesn't take criticism well at all from those teacher evaluations. He has a comeback for all of them.He thinks he's great and teaches clearly. He doesn't.Funny that a school as large as WCU has only one teacher to teach tax but unless an answer is in the solution manual this idiot teacher has no idea what the answer is.
Hardest accounting class at wcu. i've gotten A's in all my other accounting classes, but no matter how much you study, the exams are impossible. attendance, participation and effort are meaningless. you are a number in a computer to this guy. mastery and understanding of the conepts will not result in a good grade. tests are strict time limit
I don't understand how this guy can still have a job considering how many students have to retake his class. His notes are fine but tests are impossible. I would love to stick him in a room for 2 hours to take one of his own tests and see how bad he bombs.this guy is an idiot. If you ask him a question he says good question but I don't know.
Professor Flynn's tax class is the reason I dropped out of the Accounting major. I didn't do anything but study for this class and yet somehow I still could not pass. Thanks a lot Flynn. Good Luck to anyone in the Accounting Major.
tests are designed to trick you. you can understand a concept very well, but every "loop hole" and "exception to the rule" will cost you a good 20 points each test. also, he doesn't understand student questions and answers them poorly. he means well, but just takes everything way too seriously and is bad at giving partial credit
This guy couldn't make it in the real world and that is why he is teaching. He feels like a God in his classroom and feeds his ego by being a jerk.
He is the worst teacher I ever had, loves to tell his stupid tax stories in class,he loves taxes but ask him a question about something in class he will make you feel like are stupid . 2 out of 3 people have to retake the class. he is the only tax teacher at wcu eventhough everyone constantly gives him bad ratings on the teacher evalutions.

There's a difference between being a challanging prof. and just a plain jerk. Flynn is the later, he purposely makes his exams impossible to finish. Most ACC exams are about 25 MC and 3 problems. His test hav 28 problems. Immpossible to finish cause of the strict time limit. I would pay to see him take his own exam.
Excellent teacher. His tests are difficult due to time constraints. If you don't want to put the time and effort in, then be a management major. His classes are tough, but you will know the material when you leave. He makes class very interesting, and he is an excellent public speaker.
everyone had me afraid of this teacher but I like him. he is clear and precise on what is expected but he is also hard. if you are willing to work, he is a great teacher.
Listen; this professor is impossible, that's why they have someone else teaching tax 1 in the Fall. No student can finish his tests in 2hrs, unless you have past exams, plus unless you stop putting effort in all other classes that's when you will manage to pass his class. Because of him students have changed majors.
I just had Flynn for 3 semesters straight. (Tax 1 & 2, Non Profit)He is not a good professor but thinks he is the greatest. My GPA without his classes is 3.83, with them is 3.56. His exams are ridiculous! Almost impossible to finish in 2 hours. He just tries to trick you, not teach you. I put more work into his classes than any others, barely passed
Hard Work and showing up for class alone doesn't guarantee a passing grade. I suggest you go online and find a solution manual to the text book. This will ensure a 100% on all tax returns and homework, and will go a long way in passing tax classes, possibly even with a high grade.
Let's face it...Tax is a very complex topic, however, too many are quick to condemn Flynn. He is strict and demands a lot from his students, but you have to be willing to work hard to do well in his class. His tests are tough, but if you work hard on the tax returns which constitute 25% of your grade which helps. No solution manuals just hard work!
i'm suspicious of the positive comments on here. wouldn't surprise me if Flynn wrote a bunch himself.
Flynn its hardest teacher at west chester. Exams are extremely hard. My class Avg was a 57. I hope i never have to take him again this was the worst/hardest accounting class ever. I really hope that he quits teaching.
While Flynn's tax classes ARE hard, I find them doable. I'm a bright student and achieved an A in his course, without HOURS of studying. Flynn is a great teacher and his tests only include information learned in class. Many alumni are glad for everything they learned from him - thoroughly prepares you for the CPA Exam.
no matter how much time you put into this course you will have to take it twice. he is out to TRICK his students and not teach them. i do not understand how he is still a professor when he fails 75% of his class
no matter how much time you put into this course you will have to take it twice. he is out to TRICK his students and not teach them. i do not understand how he is still a professor when he fails seventy five percent of his class
dr. flynn... stop commenting on yourself on here. you are the worst professor. out to fail and trick your students with a bad attitude and offering no help. you should be fired
Eventally, I passed this class by doing nothing but studying day by day such as memorize all his notes, did all the problems over 10 times, and make sure you understand how to get all the answers......What a terrrible experience !
Professor Flynn is nice as a person. But I agree that his class and teaching are horrible. Expecting a student to sit in class, take notes, come BACK to campus at night to take 3 hour exams, complete tax returns, study, view the study guides, AND keep up with the overload of homework every night is crazy. Some of us work for a living.
Tough class, but what would you expect? Tax isn't supposed to be easy. If you do what students are supposed to do (take notes, study, do homework), you will do well in his class. If you are lazy and want to cruise through college, enjoy taking his class over and over! Great professor in my opinion. He gives great notes so don't miss any of them.
It is pretty poor that a professor has to monitor his rating and write good responses in order to boost his ratings. Reviewed his first tax return lesson very tricky
Honestly I can't disagree with what he says in class about being prepared, studying, reading the book, etc. because if you can do it, the class is very passable. The problem is, a brotha's got like 4 other classes and a part time job and can't really be spending hours and hours on tax, but it is what it is I guess.
This isnt Flynn - I promise. I took his classES many years ago and to be completely honest - I'm happy I did. As much as the class blows (inevitable, its tax) and how hard the exams are, he definitely prepares you for the real world. You honestly gotta be on your toes and you gotta put the time in. Make sure you form study groups - it helps!
Took both tax classes, Got an A in each. Read everything prior to class. Do ALL assignments prior to class. Form study groups for studying and for the returns. Exams, do your best not to use your books. They will slow you down. Write every single note, and copy everything you think you might need from the text onto 9x11 paper. Bam, A.
Taking Tax I now. Probably the hardest class i've taken so far. Flynn isn't a bad teacher at all, it's just the material is difficult to study for. Type up all of your notes and condense them for quick reference sheets during tests and practice the problems over and over.
Flynn makes his class way harder then it needs to be, but you just have to deal with it. Try and do your best on the first 2 tests because the final is very difficult. Pay attention to all the little details in the notes and text book because he will test you on them! He is not a bad guy, just really tough. If you put the work in, it will pay off.
Very clear when teaching material, so attend every class. Not as bad as everyone else makes him out to be. The key, attend every class and keep up with the homework. It will be about 2-3 hours of work a week and on test day just redo the homework problems (will take about 5 hours) and you will pass the class.
He’s not the monster everyone makes him out to be but his tests are very hard. He should assign harder homework problems. You feel like you’re prepared when you do the homework but things on the test weren’t covered in the homework.
He’s not the monster everyone makes him out to be but his tests are very hard. He should assign harder homework problems. You feel like you’re prepared when you do the homework but things on the test weren't covered in the homework.
Very helpful as an instructor, good quality teaching method. Personally I wish there are more instructors like him, because he cares what your really learned. Exams are fair, he does not test material he didn't cover.
This was one of the hardest courses I ever took, it was a lot of work. Flynn is not a bad teacher, you can e mail him and go to his office for any questions you might have. Its so much work so do not take this class looking for an easy A, you might not be able to have a life when taking this class.
This class is not hard if you put the time in. You NEED to study and stay on top of the HW. He gives extra credit for certain HW's and they help you stay alive in that class. Tip to pass- Take really well organized notes for the open book/note exams. they will save your life!!
Tax was the hardest class I have ever had. It is a lot of work but Prof Flynn makes it as interesting as he can. A lot of people don't like him but he motivated me to work hard. Tests are very difficult; I didn't have a life a week up until the exam. Returns are hard as well but the homework saves you (it's extra credit). Attend every class.
Prof Flynn is an outstanding teacher, but this is the hardest class I have EVER had. The exams are very difficult but the hw's save your grade. Attend every class and do the work; you'll pass.
Worst Accounting professor ever. Unrealistic standards. Doesn't teach you how to apply the material to the actual tax returns. Expects you to figure it out yourself. You'll spend hours on hours for a D. Since you can't avoid him, I recommend either changing your major, or go to another school for accounting.
Absolutely AWFUL! Worst professor at WCU! Also I know for a fact on his time off, rather than helping his students, he comes on this site and adds his own comments. What a joke of a teacher!
Terrible
Tax is tough. I can understand people complaining about that. But Flynn is clear about what he expects and teaches exactly what will be on the tests. He is a great professor. Treat the classes with the respect they deserve and you will do well.
Dr. Flynn gets a lot of negative comments, but honestly, he is the best professor I had at West Chester. Make no mistake, tax will be the toughest course you'll take in college, but you leave knowing the material. Flynn will help you if you ask and make an effort. In my opinion, the students who don't read, study or go to class are the ones who fai
Flynn's class is the hardest you'll have to take in your time as an accounting major. Honestly, tax is my favorite type of accounting to learn because you can put it to use in your personal life. However, his tests are impossible and syllabus unforgiving. I know that the last few comments were posted by Flynn because it's what he says all the time!
Toughest class I have taken at WCU, by far. So much material, but Flynn knows how to teach it. Go to class, spend time out of class reading, and don't save tax returns for last minute and you will be okay. Homeworks are a HUGE help. Tests are open book and note, but don't think that is enough; you have to read, highlight, study, sticky note.
Do the work and you'll be fine. Do the HW until you understand the concepts. Then do it again. My 2 As did not come easy. For tests, bring 1 paper for each chpt. Write everything on it that's important. Go in like ur not allowed to use ur book and you won't. Trust me 2 yrs into pub acct and youll wish u were back in FHG studying for a Flynn test:)
I watched this man take a 20% grade deduction from a tax return because the person showed up to class LITERALLY 30 seconds late. DO NOT take this class lightly. Don't lollygag the first test like I did and play catch up the rest of the way. Respect the class. Flynn teaches it the best way possible, but lock and load for a heck of a semester.
You will be challenged more than you were in any class you've taken at WCU, but it will make you a more disciplined student. Flynn takes a lot of pride and his teaching is outstanding. Do your part by being engaged, staying on top of assignments, participating, and you'll be very successful in this seemingly impossible class.
Thinks he is the greatest Professor ever but is unorganized and mean. Calling out students who are visibly confused and asking them on the spot is not a good way to help them learn. It is a pain how all of the professors are burnt out accountants who never made partner at their firm and now think they should teach.
Might actually be the worst professor at WCU. He makes a class that should be relatively strait forward the worst experience ever. If his own personal hubris did not get in the way a teaching more students would actually enjoy accounting.
Is most certainly the worst professor I have ever had
Dr Flynn is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had. He clearly explains every topic you need to know and actually makes you work for your grade. In order to do well, you have to go to every class, pay full attention, and make sure you understand the material. That's it. I got an A in the class and never read a chapter. Don't stress.
He is clearly coming on this site and adding good reviews there is no way anyone would give him such positive reviews constantly. If you are reading this get your life in order and learn to teach properly. Game on
Game on. For ever review you post as a student. I will post more. This site is meant for students to fairly grade their professors not for them to flatter themselves
Is most certainly the worst.
Needs to reorganize his class. Not well organized always seems scattered and confused
Do not take unless you have no other option.
Worst Professor ever
I am graduating in May and it looks like I will pass Tax 2, but I know there are people who may not. In my opinion, Tax 2 is much more difficult than Tax 1 solely because of the material being taught. Flynn teaches the material well though. Do the work and you should be alright. However, the first return assignment is way too much work.
Dr. Flynn teaches the class very well. I read the book, I studied and when it was time to take the test I still failed them. It is a tough class and I still have to take it again. NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. This is a tough class! Good Luck.
Tax 2 is much harder than tax 1. Material is intense and builds on every chapter. Put the work in and you'll scrape by. There is no point in complaining because the road to a WCU accounting degree is through him. Accept that the class is unfairly difficult and do the best you can, you will get a C.........(maybe)
I just graduated and am currently studying for the regulation portion of the CPA exam, which is roughly 60% taxation and I am very thankful for Dr. Flynn. He teaches the most important material and certainly prepares you well for the exam. You need to do the work though (read, take notes and do the HW). I got an A in the class.
All the comments I read about Flynn were not true. They just made me scared and lost confidance on myself. He has a diffrent way of teaching, so all you need is read the chapters, do the HK, and pay a full attention. so try to understand and do your best, then judge him.
Not understanding. If you take this class make sure you put a few hours a day into it. He made me hate being an accounting major.
Flynn is an excellent teacher compared to many other accounting professors at west chester. however, his exams are extremely difficult and he grades the tax returns very tediously. Tax 1 was a big struggle for me and i typically get A's and B's in my classes. I took tax 2 in the summer and passed with a B-. keep up with the work every week!
Thanks for making me change majors
Honestly just good luck. I recommend not working and minimizing your on-campus involvement. Go over your notes literally everyday.
Was so scared going into this class based on what people said. I read the textbook, did the problems, paid attention in class, and put in a lot of study time. His outlines help. Everyone I know that put in work passed, those that didn't try didn't do well. Your choice.
I put so much time and effort into Flynn's class, but I still ended up with a D-. Overall I had a 3.87 GPA before Flynn so... it's not because I'm a bad student. He made me feel really anxious every class. Sadly, I have to retake. If you don't "pass", I believe you need a C-, don't worry because many other people did.
Flynn is a difficult teacher, but for the right reasons. Pay attention every class and have the work done before you go - make friends and put in the time; you'll pass.
Lecture wise: his notes were very clear and organized, but the lectures move at a fast pace, so reading/doing homework prior is make or break. Don't let his sarcastic personality discourage you from participating. This man's recommendation hold a ton of credibility with employers, so get on his good side.
Get ready to hate accounting
Dr. Flynn is the best in the Accounting Department. He explains things very clear, and we actually learned. You put the hours study, you earn the grade. Read the book before and after class, and do the problems, you will be fine. Dr. Flynn is a very humor person, he makes Tax classes very interesting, sometimes he makes us laughing so hard :)
Dr. Flynn, probably the most feared Accounting professor, but he shouldn't be. Tax is hard, you HAVE to stay on top of the readings, and try to do the homework. Also, make sure you do the homework he collects, big help. And don't wait until the last week for the Tax Returns. He was the best professor I had at WCU and I will always remember him.
Flynn's teaching style is very different from other professors in that he intimidates students into learning the material. I wouldn't call him "inspirational" by any means. The exams test you on your ability to work under pressure with a large amount of given information, rather than your mastery of the topics. Would not take for Tax 2.
You have to take this course as an accounting major, and Flynn is the only one who teaches it. The semester you take this class it will basically be your life. Accept it, put in the work and be prepared to participate in class.
Everyone scares you about Professor Flynn. I still don't understand why. Put in the effort and you will do well. He's not mean, he just doesn't brook nonsense. A college level course, so you can't expect to show up and pass. Fair grading - wants to prepare you for the workplace. Overall great teacher.
Definitely one of the hardest Accounting professors at West Chester. Tax is definitely a tough class and you will have to put in some long hours and work hard, but it is by no means an impossible class. DO NOT CRAM for the tests, it will not work. Leave yourself a week or so to review for each test and take good notes and you should be fine.
Great professor. Give a little true effort you'll do fine.
Flynn teaches an "interesting" class, not impossible by any means. He sets the bar high for students. Passing requires serious time and effort. Definitely not a class to take lightly.
Tax class is a ton of material, no matter who teaches it. Flynn breaks down difficult material into bite size pieces. Note heavy, but the notes are REALLY useful. TRY the homework, REDO the homework for practice. Index your notes to make tests easier to work through!
Very difficult professor who has clear favorites. This professor gave me extreme anxiety every class. Dedicate your life to this class and you will get the C that you need. 3 exams and 2 tax returns make or break you. If you plan on taking him for tax 2 try to get him for tax 1.
This was one of the most uncaring professors I've ever had. I have disability, so when Anderson's elevator broke I could not make it to class. He told me that was no excuse and to have someone carry me up (he was not kidding). His class is very difficult and he is hard to ask questions too. Do not take him if you do not have too.
Dr. Flynn's tax classes are the most difficult classes an accounting student at WCU will take, but they aren't impossible. Forget whatever concept of studying you had before, because a couple hours here and there aren't enough. Beyond just tax, Flynn's classes teach you how to learn and not memorize, and force you to be meticulous. Great professor.
Tough grader but you learn a lot. LOOK ONLINE FOR TAX RETURN ASSIGNMENTS!!!!!!
Don't believe the rumors, Dr. Flynn is one of the best professors I have ever had. The material, in general, is tough so it is a class that you have to work for in order to get the grade you desire. But, if you are actually interested in learning Tax, Prof. Flynn is the professor to take.
This class is difficult but you will learn a lot for your degree. Flynn can be rough but it's the best money I've spent to actually learn. Study his lecture notes, get to know a classmate well and work on tax assignments early. Homework adds extra points to exams. Withdraw on the last day and retake it for an easier time if you can.
Greatest bang for your buck in terms of not only knowledge but how you go about learning itself. The class is not subject to grade inflation like some others, therefore you are going to need to work hard for your grade. It may not seem apparent at times, but he cares about his students and is preparing you for your career. No sloppy work!
Don't take this guy by any means. If you ask a question, he'll make you feel stupid, goes through material very quickly and doesn't explain things if you get it wrong. Pretty much had to get a tutor and teach myself all of Tax I
Tax I was easily the hardest class I've ever taken, but it's also the class I learned the most as an accounting major. Read and do problems before class, go to class, and redo problems as many times as you can before exams to drill the concepts into your head. Spend majority of exam time on the MC because they can really hurt you if a lot are wrong
This class has a reputation as being the hardest class in the accounting department at West Chester, and it lived up to it's reputation tax is just a hard topic anyway but he won't make it any easier. He will make you learn and the tests are open book, but the assignments are very difficult. He will make you feel like an idiot if you ask question
Flynn has a reputation for being a difficult professor, mostly due to the material. He can be hard on students that aren't prepared for class, but he is an excellent teacher if you put the work in. When preparing for exams, study the material as if it isn't an open book test. If you put in some time to study, the course is very manageable.
Have to teach yourself, exams and tax returns are impossible
Flynn is a ball buster if you do not put the work in but if you do what is expected of you. You earn the grade you deserve. It is a tough course and Flynn doesnt cut much slack but I learned more in that class than any class ever. & I would take him again. Its not as bad as everyone says.
Dr. Flynn's class is very challenging, but you do some serious learning! He can be sarcastic and standoffish, but if you show up, participate, and respond positively to him, Dr. Flynn isn't so bad. Do the problems and review the lectures for at least a week or two before the tests. Look online for IRS instructions for the tax returns!
Some people will say "You're taking tax with him? Get ready to dedicate your entire semester to tax." They're not wrong. Teaches the material quickly with little room for questions. Tests are impossible to pass without extra credit. Need to put a few hours a day into it. To anyone taking the class, prioritize this over everything else in life.
Dr. Flynn is a great professor and structures his class to prepare you to be competitive in the real world. If you have any interest in the tax field, this class will help you determine if that interest is legitimate. To pass this class you must put the time in. The exams are tough. Complete the CPA review questions at the end of each chapter!
Dr. Flynn is a great professor. I have learned more in his tax classes than I have in any of my other courses at WCU. If you want to do well, prioritize it put in the work. The students who have negative things to say are generally the students who don't put the work in. Go to class, do your homework and study. It's easy to receive an A doing that
Flynn is a different professor when he teaches Not-For-Profit. He is very clear and srtaightforward, but he does pick on people for not doing the reading or homework. For ACC407, he doesn't post the homework answers online, so you need to come to is office or, better yet, class to get the solution.
Flynn gets a bad rep from his difficult tax 1 class but non profit is way different! it is not easy by any means but very manageable. Expects you to read the text and do the homework before class. Flynn isn't easy but he wants everyone to learn and do well after school, not just pass the class. Do the work and study and you will be fine.
Dr. Flynn is an excellent professor. Hard classes but very possible to get a good grade. He challenges students to learn, and prepares them for the real world. My advice for doing well in his tax classes - Don't be afraid of asking questions. Embrace the challenge of tax. I've seen too many people in his classes fail due to fear of looking dumb.
I honestly dont know how he is a professor. If you ask for help and you arent doing well in his class, he wont help. I went to his office hours and all I got was try harder and maybe youll pass. I spent hours upon hours for his class. Dont bother with studying the homework problems for exams. Find CPA exam questions instead to prepare.
I didn't like how he pressured participation. If you go to class and take the notes and follow the practice problems, things make sense. But you do two tax returns and he doesn't at all teach you how what you're learning applies, you just 'read the IRS instructions'. The practice problems also don't help fully with tests, unfamiliar wording/format.
Professor Flynn knows what he is talking about, but he goes too fast over the material. He also only shows 1 or 2 practice problems, and then puts difficult questions on the exam. Taking this class online is stressful because he will randomly call on you and make you feel like and idiot for something you are just learning about. Very difficult.
I understand that the tax class itself is difficult, but I got the feeling that the professor is asserting himself by making this subject even more difficult and setting such high standards. That makes this class almost impossible to pass the first time. So, don't be discouraged if you did not pass the first time, very few people could in his class
not bad
Professor Flynn throws such much information at you, but gives no study guide for a test. There's two tax return assignments, but he doesn't teach you how to fill out the forms. 30% of the class dropped after the first test, probably would have been more if the drop deadline wasn't after the second exam.
Do not take him especially for tax. He purposely make class even harder than it already is.
Tax is by no means an "easy" course but taking it with Dr. Flynn helped me learn more than just tax things. It teaches you organization and preparation skills as he expects you to go over the class materials beforehand. He gives you plenty of materials to assist in learning you just have to be willing to put in more than the minimum effort.
I took Tax 1&2 and non-profit with Flynn and got high B's. He tells you exactly what you need to know/do for class on the syllabus. It's not a cake walk, but it's not impossible either. Not for profit is definitely less out-of-class work than tax, as long as you pay attention and put in effort. Exams are similar to in-class problems & homework.
He gives students everything they needed to be successful, but I know many students were either unable or unwilling to put in the work that a 400 level course such as this requires. Open-ended questions on the test are the same as the problems from class and he goes over the answers to them so you are well equipped. will be taking him for tax 2.
Everything is open note. Just go to class, be prepared, and pay attention. He gives you everything you need, you just need to be willing to put in more than the bare minimum. If you don't want to put in work then don't take this class... and maybe change your major. Also, never answer a question with "I don't know" or "is it ____?".
Tax Returns are a challenge but the tests are basically from the notes. You will learn tax if you take the time to learn. If you want to be a good accountant take Flynn.
Great guy and teacher, but this is a very difficult class. Make sure you are taking notes and doing the reading every night, you really have to put in the work. Even with all the extra credit his test were very hard. Overall a good professor but you still have to put in a lot of work by yourself in order to pass.
Tests are very difficult to pass. But the extra credit helps.
Lol at some of these reviews. Dr. Flynn is a fantastic professor who provides you with everything you need to succeed in his courses. People don't like him because he doesn't put up with nonsense - if you don't do the reading or homework and it shows, you will get called out. Don't expect an A without putting work in.
Very arrogant professor. I don't think I ever felt comfortable answering questions in his class because he comes off as very judgmental of students. He teaches the material well, but I dread coming to his class every week because of how he exerts himself.
dr flynn is a legend just show up and pay attention youll be fine in 407... tax ii is tough though
I've taken Flynn for several classes now and he is hands down one of the best Accounting professors at WCU. He expects high quality work from his students and does not tolerate slackers, so be warned if you think you're going to coast through Tax / NFP Accounting.
Flynn is without a doubt an excellent professor, but that's ruined by the fact he's an insufferable person. Class is uncomfortable because he's constantly looking for opportunities to call students out / put them on the spot. You'll probably have to take ACC407 with this guy, but look elsewhere for tax. It's just not worth it.
Sadly, the only way to get an Accounting degree is through this man. Just an all around terrible person. Be ready for the Flynn Experience, which involves him feeding his massive ego by being unnecessarily rude to students. My advice is to go to every class, takes notes on everything he says, and then condense your notes before the exam.
Flynn puts people on the spot throughout the entire class and has a rude and condescending attitude when answering questions. Exams are unnecessarily difficult and designed to trip you up. He assigns two tax return assignments but doesn't even teach us how to fill them out and grades them strictly. I honestly don't know how this guy is a professor.
Great professor in the aspect that I have 100% learned so much in his class. The problem with Flynn is that he makes it known that many students do and will fail, from the start, and that you just have to figure it out. His tests are hard, but the class is hard. He could help more with the tax returns, because he does not explain anything with them
He is the worst teacher at WCU. He is rude and has a huge ego. His tests are near impossible and they are what most of your grade is comprised of. When asking him questions, he will be extremely condescending and not help at all. If you do not understand something he will tell you "you don't know how to learn."
Dr. Flynn was one of the best professors of my undergraduate career, and he confirmed my interest in tax. While his personality may be hard to work with at times, he's an extremely effective teacher. Thorough lectures, detailed handouts, and plenty of practice problems prior to exams. Take these reviews with a grain of salt.
Honestly he is a great lecturer. The material makes a lot of sense simply by him explaining it. With that being said, don't even think about missing a class because you will be incredibly behind. Tax returns and exams are unreasonably hard. The time spent on this class is like no other class, almost like a full time job. Good luck, you'll need it.
Take anyone else for tax 2. No phones, if your phone vibrates even he will dock points. If you're late (even 5 seconds late) you are marked absent for that day and if you come 5 seconds late on the day tax returns are due it is marked late and you lose points. No guidance is given on graded homework and the grading is very inconsistent.
No guidance is given on graded homework and the grading is very inconsistent. He is just simply rude. I emailed him for help explaining why he gave me half credit in my homework and no feedback was given. This class was mandatory for me and he made it hell. The first day of class he yelled at like 7 different people for various things. Hated it.
Professor Flynn is a tough but effective lecturer. His classes are demanding, with challenging exams and tax return assignments. While his teaching style can be abrasive at times, engaging with the material and utilizing study tools like Unstuck study can really help you succeed. Overall, a rewarding class for those willing to put in the effort.
I would only recommend taking this class if this is for a credit or your major. In any other case I would strongly advise you not to. Well you are allowed to use notes on exams, the exams are still hard af. Also no phones or laptops allowed in class. Although he is not the most mean professor, he is also not the nicest. Proceed with caution.
he is kinda crazy, but he makes class interesting, he teaches well, his homework and tests are not too bad as long as you study. tests are open note, open book, plus you can bring in class examples and printed homework. hates computers and phones but it helps you focus. he cold calls but he does learn everyone's name. i would take him again.
Professor Flynn is the meanest professor I have ever had. Tax is already hard and he makes it even harder with his attitude. Now don't get me wrong he obviously does know what he's doing and teaches okay, but is just a really mean guy. I never felt comfortable asking a question because of the way he would answer other people's questions. Not a fan.
old school professor who is intimidating and cold calls but cares about you doing well and passing. doesn't allow laptops in class. homework problems are from the textbook you have to pay for. He grades homework based on correction not completion. open note exams. gives good advice.
This is one of the worst professors I have had in West Chester. I was avoiding his class my whole tenure at West Chester but nobody else teaches 404. If you miss more than 6 classes, he drops you 10%. And get ready to be cold-called 24/7. Can't walk in late, but he keeps you in class 10 minutes after. Believe all the Horror Stories. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Flynn isn't as bad as people made him out to be. He is strict but he wants you to do well, I would take his class again before sitting through Belak's lectures. Tax is hard, but he makes the material very easy to understand. With that being said, you still have to put in a lot of effort to do well in the class. If you pay attention you will pass.
try to take ANYONE else. This class was very difficult because the grading was based on only a few things, so it was hard to improve your grade. The teacher is not very friendly and makes students feel uncomfortable or even dumb when asking questions. The tests are hard, and some questions he designed to confuse you. Goes over the material so fast.
He is tough on students, but really wants them to do well. I learned so much from this course. His lectures are great and he is very structured, which ensures students are not left guessing. I had him twice and would definitely take him again! I am so grateful for his chapter outlines since they will be very helpful when I take the CPA exam.
As tough a person as he is he's an ok professor. Not nice or understanding towards his student but gives good notes, lectures, and examples. 3 exams, 2 tax returns, 3-4 homeworks, and 3 in class quizzes. The quizzes and homeworks are extra credit. Show up to class, don't make him mad, do your work, and you'll be fine. He also cold calls.
