Easy grader (he was givin out 20% curves before the semester was over), he is really funny, and he explains everything crystal clear. However, he is usually late for class and your entire grade is based on 3 test. -kink77890
Doesn't explain things well, gets off subject constantly and easily, only grade is based on three tests, UGGGGHHHH... the class sucked and I couldn't wait for it to get over!
Knows his stuff very well. Would definitely take his classes if offered. Just make sure that you pay extra attention to what he says. Sometimes he makes mistake. He's human :-)
With the entire grade based on three tests, you have to be clear on the lecture and text. Too bad he could'nt keep up with the text reading listed on the syllabus.
Knows his material. Doesn't necessarily folow the text, but that's o.k. Willing to help outside of class.
He gives lectures and you have to follow along. Entire grade based on 3 tests, but he gives tremendous curves. So dont get discouraged, and drop the class, you'll make it.
Very hard subject, but Kevin makes the subject interesting. No homework and only three tests. Most of the test material will be coming from the lectures so pay close attention and ask a lot of questions.
Terrible teacher. Unclear about subject matter and easily gets off topic. Held a review class on Sunday (when the class is normally held on MWF)beofre finals.
Tested on info from previous edition of text (info NOT in current edition), horribly-written lectures, he presents TONS of graphs you're supposed to study but is unable to insert them into his lectures so you constantly have to toggle back and forth between docs, midterm and final are looong and subjective (lots of essay Qs), and he grades hard.
Kevin is great. He is a lil odd, and can get confused at times... but he is really really smart. This guy knows his stuff, and you will learn a lot from him. be prepared to have your grade based on 2 or 3 tests... no projects, no homework. So STUDY and take NOTES.
No homework! Only three tests, I barely picked up the book. I showed up everyday and took notes and got an A.
Very smart and helpful. I do not have an "econ" mind at all, but he made sense out of all of it. I struggled throughout the term with tests, yet I showed initiative and I think that helped me pull a C. Ask questions and show up. He likes to put practicval use into his tests, not just knowing terms and such, but actually using it. I loved it
Unhelpful, uninterested in student success, emails not answered promptly, quizzes not from reading and did not make sense. Overall very poor and unprofessional.
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. Teacher not very helpful and handouts are bad.
He made learning fun! Excellent professor!
I had his class 2 years ago. I thought his teaching methods were unusual, however, as I reached a 400 level economics, I realized just how helpful his teaching style is. You may not understand his simple nature of teaching and if you are getting the material, but, when you move on, it all makes sense when the concepts are applied at a higher level

Good instructor.A lot of the test material is on his lectures. So just show up to class and you will be fine. OH yeah, tell him to put on his free market HAT. Ha..Ha!
Entertaining!
Do Not take this class Online!!! He may be a push over in person lectures, but is an ass online. assigned readings have little or nothing to do with the tests. I have an AAOT with a honors, yet by with my midterm I had a D in this class, extreamly worthless.
Kevin Furey is a great instructor. He has a tendency to go off on tangents that can last an entire lecture session, but they are usually pretty informative even when off-topic. EC200 turned out to be more history than I expected, but he still managed to make it interesting. A lot of test material is from lectures and not the textbook.
I did not like him. I took him online and he was so frustrating. We had weekly quizes and he would say "Chapter 7 Quiz" and I would study then go to take it and it was over a whole different chapter. This didn't just happen once, but happened for more than half of the quizes. I'd recommend a different teacher.
Worst prof. I have had in 3 years of college. My advice is to RUN, do not walk away from this class.
Macro 202 and Micro 201: Being a social science Econ is all about he stories told very well by Furey. Take good notes and/or bring a tape recorder. The manifestations of the concepts presented will sometimes have unpredicted outcomes. You dont have to read the textbook. Read his online readings. Use his office hours. Partcipate, ask questions.
He is smart and can be funny (sometimes facetious, though). His best quality is his upbeat attitude. I seriously wonder if he has a mean bone in his body. He can be disorganized and odd, but who said learning should always be easy? He definately knows his stuff at least, and he does care about student success, lack of social acemen notwithstanding.
His lectures and graphs are mixed up and confusing. It is hard to understand what he is expecting. He has proctored tests that are long and very hard. He is unapproachable and uncaring. His students are always confused and don't know what to do next. I wished I had never taken this class. I am nearly a straight A student who barly got a D.
By far the worst teacher I have taken in my two years at chemeketa. Very off topic during lectures, unusual teaching methods, hard exams, textbook did not help. Barely got a D in his class and I am an A student, very upset I cant believe I paid for this class. You could walk into the class and not no what hes teaching. Do not recommend him.
RUN!!!! If you want to get your first "D", this is the class for you. Confusing online EC201 course, I wish I had never taken. A waste of my time and now I need to take the class over to get a "C" to graduate. Do youself a favor and save a lot of heartache on worthless proctored tests, etc. Ugh!!!
Hard Class, but this guy is hilarious in my opinion. So entertaining in a dry way. During one of our tests he took a nap on top of his desk! You have to go to most every lecture to get a good grade however.
Interesting guy in a unique way..kind of person fun to sit down and have a beer with. Knows his stuff. Would I take another class from him...no. I would attend a guest lecture by him..nothing graded. Easily off task & tests are confusing although does grade on a nice curve. If you need ECN202 for a prereq & just want to get a grade....RUN! There ar
Very surprised at the negative comments, I went into my ECON class with little to no interest or knowledge on the subject and learned a LOT. Class attendence and note-taking is a huge part of this class, the rest is how well you can do essay questions. Really enjoyed his teaching style and lectures, would definitely take a class again from him.
Took the online course. Irrelevant text book material covered in chapter quizzes regarding stories, not economics. Difficult tests, LOTS of confusing options to choose from on tests.
Kevin was about 5 minutes late every class. He often goes off on tangents during class, making it difficult to follow the curriculum. His test's are very strange, his multiple choice sections range from a-f and he takes off points from the essay sections without explaining why. Go to class everyday and take notes! The exam is 0% text book stuff.
I took Prof. Furey's online EC 200 class and got an A. I would recommend the class. There are weekly reading assignments that take between 1-3 hours followed by a weekly quiz and two tests per term (taken in the testing-center). Prof. Furey wrote about half of the reading assignments himself and his writing is very opinionated but interesting.
Kevin was terrible. On his assignment sheet he posted that the first quiz is due wk 3. I sent it in and kept up with the homework. He dropped me wk 4 saying that I should have turned the first quiz in wk 2 - bcuz that's whats on the syllabus. I'm a straight A student who lost my financial aid for this term bcuz of him!! He's so inconsiderate.
I am a straight A student on the President's list. This guy is hands down the worst online professor I have ever seen. My gpa is in jeopardy thanks to Fury's disorganized and inadequate teaching ability. Students Beware! Stay away from this professor. He needs to be fired and replaced immediately.
Furey grades BASED SOLELY ON TESTS. A little more than 1/3 of my class would fail if he didn't grade on a curve. There are no written assignments due nor extra credit options. He is unforgiving. He does not write clearly yet about about 1/3 the reading assignments are his own writings/videos about economics - which often contradict the text used.
Furey is a terrible professor and he teaches his class backwards... You don't get to see the lecture until AFTER you take the quiz! You only get 10 min for 8 lengthy questions, and I ran out of time on every quiz. He doesn't allow make ups on ANYTHING, worst of all he's just plain cold and doesn't care if his students learn or succeed :(
He is a nice guy, great speaking voice & knowledgeable on topic. BUT, very confusing, test questions don't make sense & a huge curve is required or 2/3 of class would've failed. NO EC points given, quiz questions are oddly written. Late to lectures & FREQUENTLY off topic making it difficult to follow & know what to study. Nice guy. Poor instructor.
Furey is a good lecturer, but his resources and tests are very confusing and poorly written. He would teach different things in class that generally didn't relate to that week's reading. We also were behind a week throughout the term. His tests are poorly written; majority of the class would fail if not for his curves (midterm1:19%, midterm2:24%).
Took his online class. INCREDIBLY unorganized. Isn't helpful to any questions at all. This was supposed to be an introductory course, and everything was way over my head. Would not recommend.
Yes, it is one of the harder classes I've taken, but I managed to get an A. Here's the secret: make an effort. Kevin is very knowledgable and his recorded lectures for the online class were very helpful - use them. Put in the time and you'll be able to pass this class with more pride than if it were an "easy" A.
Fairly difficult class, but the professor is very knowledgeable. Every test is preceded by a review session to answer any last minute questions, and all of the tests are curved so that the mean grade is about 75%. My only complaint is that he is sometimes unclear as to what it is he is teaching, exactly, but he makes up for it with the reading.
The man has lost his mind! Confusing, at minimum. His rhetoric is worthless. He bounces from one Campbell's soup story to talking about the Beast and then back to a news article he read in 1972. He talks in riddles CONSTANTLY and is NEVER EVER focused... he drove me NUTS!!! His tests are all long essay that have little to do with the lectures.
His is very confusing, and the quiz can be tricky, read the questions closely.
Here's the deal with Professor Furey, if you are a visual learner like me, DO NOT take Econ with him. He talks for the full 2 hours of the lecture. I found it very hard to understand what he was talking about half of the time, and there were just about no helpful visual tools to guide me through the course. Good guy, just hard to understand.
Mr. Furey doesn't teach, he rants. Nearly everyday he started the class by showing up late and then occasionally would complain about this that and the other. When he finally started lecturing, he wouldn't stop. Everyday was lecture day and me being a visual learner found it very difficult to grasp what he was saying.
This professor is scatterbrained at best. For the weekly quizzes and midterm and final, you are practically only tested on the reading material. I recommend not watching the lecture videos because he is all over the place and the material covered is usually in the reading He has some odd views and is not a very professional teacher.
I took this class online and there wasn't much interaction with other students or the instructor, which I like. Mid-term and final are proctored pen and paper tests. His lectures are the key to knowing the answers on test. I was afraid I wouldn't pass but if you put in the work, it's not hard at all. I ended up with an A.
This is the only class I've taken with him, but he's a good professor. If you don't do the homework, it'll be hard to get a good grade. He bases your test scores off of concept understanding, but he indicates everything he expects you to know, both in the reading and the lecture. Pretty easy class, though, he grades with a huge curve.
Lectures are fun, interesting, and informative. He explained concepts clearly and was willing to work all the way through any questions. His tests are super tough though. You'll be thinking you've learned a TON in class until you see your grade.
Furey is my least favorite teacher I have ever had. His lectures are horrible, he words questions terribly, grades extremely tough (when you can't understand the question because of poor wording) and he is so inconsiderate to a student in need of help. When approached, he is nothing but rude The whole class would fail if it wasn't for the curve.
Hate this class so much. This grading is fair but you just need to pay attention his class and he gives extra points on the exam. I would not take him. Exams are hard sometimes they do not make sense at all. Easy class to fail.
I am happy to admit that my poor grade was caused by my own oversight. Textbook was written by the professor, it was a beta edition. There are plans for a full edition in the future. Aside from a couple grammatical things, it was solid source material, interesting perspective. Only graded on a few quizzes, the midterm, and the final, they count!
Mr. Furey clearly knows what he's talking about. Unfortunately, I don't believe most of his students do, even after taking his class. His exams are LONG & DIFFICULT. A message he sent his class: "These are both easy; however 90 percent of students miss this question on the final." Clearly, if so many students are doing poorly, adjust your teaching.
NOT FOR VISUAL LEARNERS! He is an informative, nice guy and you can try to pass his class if you use the materials he gives you. However, he is unorganized that he doesn't update materials in blackboard, form test questions before the test date and his lectures mostly involve him talking. Even with a curve on tests, students are still failing them.
He is a nice guy but if you like long lectures and your instructor going on tangents about his college years and talking about the production of the wizard of oz before a exam that is graded heavy he might be the teacher for you. Did i also forget to mention there are no makeup tests and there is a total of 3 exams so if you take him good luck!
I like Doctor Furey a lot. He's hilarious (in that uniquely Ph.D way) and he plays the harmonica! Pro-Tip: Taking thorough notes in the reading and watching the problem set videos will get you an A in this course if you're patient with yourself. If you don't understand a concept right away, be sure to rewind the video or re-read the paragraph.
This class was homework heavy. There is so much reading (2 text books), lectures to read and lectures to watch. The good thing is that he provides problem sets for both exams that you can do. If you do them and are able to work through the problems, you will do well on the tests. You must read and watch the lectures. He does grade on a curve.
Least favorite teacher. His videos are all over the place. He words test questions horribly. He wrote the book, but issued it before the proofreading was complete so there were TOO many mistakes that had to be corrected during the course. Good thing there was a curve or most of the class would have failed!
This teacher can't teach at all. His lectures are long and he mumbles a lot. I've received a D on every test he's given us. No matter how many notes I took and no matter how much I studied I couldn't get my grade to at least a C. Overall terrible teaching style, he shouldn't be a teacher if a majority of his students fail or get D's. Unacceptable.
He liked lectures so you had to watch online recorded lectures that didn't match the text book he wrote, and because he wrote it and recorded the lectures, you couldn't look to the internet to help, because that didn't match his lessons. He wouldn't help if you email him. Most of the tutoring center took Yoder and was lost when it came to this.
This class was a nightmare. Our final grades were just posted today and I'm devastated. I'm grateful that I passed with a D but that's only due to the HEAVY curve that he does. The textbook will not help you. You're better off just writing out your own notes (and even then good luck following his questions/curriculum).
For this class, you use the textbook he wrote and on the quizzes he will ask things like, "According to the author..." which, as I said, is himself. He will also ask you to remember what specif people said from the chapters and provides a reference at the end of every chapter so you can see who he references, except that person isn't listed. Avoid!
Grading is only based on quizzes and midterm and on the final. Quizzes will be difficult if you dont read the chapters throughly. I made the mistake of skimming through the chapters so my quiz scores were not good, bringing down my grade by a lot. Took class online, but test are taken on campus.
I don't know why so many people have complained about this class and teacher. It's very much manageable if you simply do the reading. Tests are exactly like his study guides, just make sure to go through the walkthrough videos.
This class you will read a ton and the quizzes after are very hard. I am an A student but had to work very hard just to pass this class. Tests are long and wordy. Too much for a basic class. Struggled from the very beginning. He does not set the class up well. Hard to learn from his teachings.
Does not give good feedback, and is not helpful. Lots of writing errors in textbooks as well that HE WROTE
Hello
Incomprehensible writing in the textbook he wrote himself and his tests are no different. Pretty sure he teaches just to fail students and give himself an ego boost because he's "so smart" no one can pass his class. I'm an A student and have only gotten C's on every test. Long winded chapters and he loses track of what he's talking about, so awful.
Wrote his own textbook, which isn't bad (some typos but not unreadable). Problem is questions on tests are oddly worded and confusing. Random questions about small parts in the textbook that aren't even key points. Feels like the questions are designed to trick you. Tests averaging C. This should be an easy class. Don't bother with the lectures.
This is a tough course, but Mr. Furey makes it very applicable to the real world. His style of teaching online is a bit different than I was used to, so I didnt know what to expect coming in. The biggest tool utilized in his classes are the textbooks, so be prepared to read! Hes very consistent and knowledgeable.
Furey's class is without hyperbole the slow act of memorizing his entire book. You have to read chapters thoroughly and take extensive notes, or you won't pass. Midterm and final are pencil/paper tests (despite being an online class), and you can only bring in a single notecard for help. Tests are all trick questions. Some have 8 possible choices.
wish i would have looked here first cause this is definitely not a professor you want. he decides to make the question as difficult as possible(quizzes) he gives you different answers that all seem right. he doesn't even bother to email for anything . his book has a lot of spelling errors and unless you're the teacher good luck passing.
The book is hard to follow. The lectures are worthless. He talks so fast there's no time to take notes and he doesn't do powerpoints. He loves drawing diagrams on the board. The handouts he gives for each class are suppose to help but he can't even follow that through the lecture. The quizzes and exams are set up to make you fail.
One of the worst teachers Ive ever had if you even want to call him a teacher, he doesnt teach you anything he just tells you and expects you to know things, he doesnt have a lesson plan and just talks for 2 hours. He hands us a sheet of paper and expects us to learn from it while hes talking. Worst teacher Ive ever had I do not recommend.
Worst professor I've ever had. If I could rate him a zero I would. He makes you read his extremely boring book and gives really hard exams. I am a straight-A student and I have never had such a tough exam for an entry-level economics course. He can't stop talking with his hands in his videos which makes it unbearable to even watch.
Tough class but you will learn a ton. His personality comes through & that's a bonus. It's not often you get to "know" an online professor at Chemeketa. His study guide and test ?'s can be confusing & have errors. Read the book carefully & take notes while watching the problem set videos. He repeats himself often which helps concepts to stick.
Quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Sounds simple, but his quizzes are only 8 questions, so missing one question is 87%. Spent 4+ hours reading a chapter, and would still average 5/8, being an A-student. The average midterm score was 45/100, which should let him know that his questions are too difficult, but he's the only instructor for this class.
His quizzes, midterm and final are in fact "open book", but that won't help you. His questions are extremely complex. Not only will you need to read all of the assigned readings, but you'll need to read them thoroughly, and maybe even more than once to truly prepare you for a quiz, midterm or final. Hardest 200 level class I've ever taken. 0/10
You need to be a committed student to succeed this class. Feels more like an upper division class than 200 level. This class kicked my ass, but I learned a lot. I will say that I didn't care for so much multiple choice - much of which was misleading. If you study the problem sets you will do well on exams, but IT IS WORK.
Lectures often contradict the assigned book. Diagrams are often hand-drawn & illegible - both in video and also used in quizzes/exams. Questions for quizzes/exams are confusing, some must match material to a T, others are generalized with no indicator between the two. Much of the exam time is just hunting on multiple choice Q's that have 8 options.
Quizlet is useless in this class, be prepared to read a lot of boring material.
The questions on his quizzes are ridiculous and very tough.
This instructor gives 2 heavily weighted quizzes per week. 8 questions with a total of 8 points possible. 16 minutes to complete. Each wrong answer knocks you down a letter grade. He will check the class average at the end. If its below 80% for EVERY quiz, he will grade on a curve. You can read all of the material and still fail. Discouraging.
Be ready to do lots of reading! Tough grader. Late work is not accepted. There is usually one or two reading quizzes weekly.
Taking an online class means learning is self-guided. If that's a thing you dislike OR you have trouble with reading comprehension I don't recommend the class, but if that's a form of learning you enjoy I 100% recommend it. He wrote the class text and it's information dense, hence the reading comprehension requirement, but concise and interesting.
Mr. Furey was a wonderful professor who was able to properly immerse his students in the world of microeconomics (provided his students were willing to be immersed). While the readings were quite annoying and tedious at times, they were usually interesting. Read them. Some lectures were boring, but overall, it was an enjoyable class.
Professor Furey was very reliant on his book, which makes it hard because you wont know what he wants and he also isnt very explicit on what he does want on the quizzes. His quizzes are timed very short and very hard.
Professor Furey has incredibly difficult quizzes and tests designed to confuse students. His questions are based off flippant sentences of the text and rarely on big ideas. He called me nitpicky after I questioned him on a quiz answer. He said an example of a liability was the definition of it. He wrote the textbook so I had to quote him to him.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. He only grades you on quizes and his quizes are designed for you to fail. The textbook is a textbook that he wrote himself so his quiz questions are based off of similar ideas and you cant find it in the text (usually about small details and not big picture). Nice guy but his class is hard
Every quiz in the class, including the midterm and final, were open note and open book, which helps in finding the correct answers for the more difficult questions. The material is not too difficult to get through if you find the topic interesting. I will admit however that some of the multiple choice questions were hard to answer out of design.
Quizzes are going to drive you insane, his way of multiple-choice answers makes you second-guess yourself alot. You just need to hang on until the end, the midterms will give you hope but the point adjustments he makes at the end give your grade the finishing touch it deserves. Keep re-reading the chapters and the endnotes. DUE THE STUDY GUIDES!
Horrible teacher & class. The class is based off his own book, thus there are no other resources you can find online for additional information researching the class. I hope you like reading a crappy text book and answering quizzes that almost feel like they want to make you fail. Quizzes are only 1 try and hard to decipher. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Uses his own textbook. Test heavy, grade only consists of tests, midterm, and final. I had an F until the midterm for reference. It is open note, but the tests are designed to confuse you and be difficult. I could not recommend him to anyone, my experience was awful for this class. I regret not looking at this site before registering for his class.
Only grades quizzes, midterms and final exams. Response when I asked him for help with the content was "study harder". Doesn't know how to properly use a computer. Can't remember what is in the textbook. Class was disappointing, its based off of his opinions. Didn't teach he's there to be a paper pusher. DONT waste money on this man's class.
Professor would rather give students free points that they did not earn than adjust his curriculum. He teaches from his own book and phrases things in a way that is intentionally difficult to understand - then when the class tests poorly he gives free points away to keep himself from looking bad (or something) 0/10 DO NO RECCOMEND
My review has been taken down twice because I've quoted his textbook. Some points he makes are good, like how news corporations won't talk too poorly on other corporations because then they lose ad money. But most of the rest of the class is hostility and unfair representations of opposing ideas. EC201 & 202 have little to do with this class.
Was not understanding, doesn't offer extra credit or retakes on anything. He wouldn't round up my grade the 1% I needed to pass this class.
Professor Furey's class is no walk in the park. His quizzes and exams are intentionally tricky, focusing on obscure details rather than big picture concepts. That said, if you stay on top of the textbook - which he wrote himself - and use unstuckstudy for extra practice, you can do well. Just be ready to put in the work.
Hard to understand material
The worst grade I've ever gotten. I had 3.8 in high school, and 4.0 in my pre-reqs for Nursing School... I took this as an elective for Clackamas cc. His study guides were easy.. book was decent to understand... but the quizzes are HARD. I reached out to him in the 2nd week of term because I was concerned... he just told me to read slower.
