What a great teacher for my first year at university! he sets the bar high for any of my future english Profs! he is passionate about his subject and is well rounded in everything! One prof that i will never forget!!!
HIlarious!! A great prof for my first english course...
Best prof I've had, and, I'm pretty sure, the best of those I will have in future classes.
A great teacher, very knowledgable about English. Also a very easy marker and test maker, I was done the exam in 25 minutes.

Made english grammar/essay writing almost interesting. One of the better english profs I've ever had.
Great fun and learned much.
Amazing professor. This class is super boring but with Gildea's hillarious jokes it makes it easier to sit there. Really funny, and he makes an effort to save you money on the text's for the class.
best prof ever!
a funny, vibrant professor who loves his subject matter passionately and that feeling just reflects back into his students. a very inspiring teacher. no matter what he teaches, you'll be sure to enjoy the course!
This was my favorite class of the whole semester and I did not expect it due the the subject content. This professor will make you laugh each class and he is a very fair marker. I wish he taught the other English classes! It is very easy to get an A if you grasp essay structure and do not write passively. One of the greatest professors for sure!
He is a really funny prof. and he saves you a lot of money on the textbooks. I find that he is not clear at all on what he expects and the first part of his exam "critical reading' was NEVER taught in class! Apparently using too many sources on your research paper is wrong - go figure. It is better to be marked by the T.A.
The material for this class is very dry but Prof Gildea usually made it funny so time went by a little faster. He does save money on textbooks, but I would say to not even buy the Canadian Practical Stylist. Very clear on expectations.
SIck prof. He made first year English a lot better than it could/should have been. He's a great person, quite flexible, and funny! No midterm but exam was OK...you just had to listen to his lecture, which was usually humour-filled. Let out 3 hour lecture early most of the time, which was great.
He is a great English professor. He is extremely engaging and very interactive with his lectures.
This teacher is great! Soooo funny and so engaging. Actually, made me want to become a high school english teacher. He makes grammaer understandable... not sound like a mathematics equation. Loved this class. We always got let out early.
Fantastic professor! Always making jokes, absolutely hilarious. I was never very good at essay writing, but he'll go through the step by step process for the Workshop in essay Writing. If you follow those instructions, you guarantee yourself a B+ at least :) I miss his classes
Gildea is great. He's funny and interesting and very, very clear about his expectations throughout the entire course. I loved taking his class and I highly recommend him for anyone taking Workshop in Essay Writing.
Awesome professor. One can tell this guy is not a snobby academic, obviously has real world experience and knows how to apply it. His knowledge of stylistic and technical writing styles are very comprehensive. He knows how to explain clearly and persuasively. He is a really funny guy and loves to have real conversions before and after class.
Awesome prof! I found the course content very boring as it was very similar to high school but M.Gildea made things seem more pertinent.
This prof is really awesome! I had him for the general Essay Writing class (which can be pretty boring), but he really made it a pleasure to come to class. He's hilarious, very clear on his expectations and he is very fair. He is an excellenet professor, and I'd recommend him to all anglophone students taking ENG1100.
Great prof. The course content is very dry but Kevin makes it fun to learn and at the same time ensuring that everyone understands the content. Is always willing to stay after class and answer any questions or help you improve your writing skills.
Amazing prof! He really takes the time to know all of his students. Such a character! He makes a dry subject really fun. I've never been in a lecture where people burst out in laughter so much. If all else fails he could be a comedian.
Biggest beauty on campus, took the essay writing course, which I was dreading. But came out with a bunch of useful knowledge and had a good time doing it. Crystal clear on instructions and expectations and always keeps the class laughing. I'd have to say best prof I've had at uOttawa!
Sometimes I mistake this guy for Steven Colbert or John Stewart!! Knows what he is talking about and at the same time has fun with it. References in speech are fantastic. Looking forward to next class
He is a very understanding professor. Always ready to give advice
Funniest prof ever. He always make sure the lectures are fun, as much as the lecture materials are just boring stuff. Def take his class again. Fun times!
Hilarious prof. Real nice guy, and far and away the most helpful teacher I have ever had. He's a hard marker, but it's worth it to have a class with him.
nice prof., kind and genuine. seems to care about the students and our future. enjoyed a great summer semester with prof. gildea.
Super funny prof. He really enjoys teaching the class for the most part and knows his stuff. He's a hard marker, but he teaches you well enough to be able to do decent in the course. It's unlikely you'll get an A, but getting lower than a C in his course is nearly impossible. Loved the course with Dr. Gildea. He genuinely cares for his students.
Had him for ENG1100, very very easy course. I probably would have skipped every class and just did the assignments but he was hilarious and made me want to go to to class so I wouldn't miss out
Actually looked forward to his class, when everyone participates its really fun. Always upbeat and positive. Had him for ENG1100, we did 3 quick essays with loads of time to do it and a final exam, easy stuff.
Really funny guy, really straight forward. Discussion groups are really helpful, he's available and provides great feedback if you need help. Lets us out of discussion groups early; he said what he needed and you can stay if you need more feedback, or leave when you've got the grasp of that week's material
Great guy, easy class and good feedback, he is also super flexible with due dates
Gildea is hands down my favourite professor. Essay writing is a boring class but he actually made me love going! He was super helpful with our topics and essay outlines and making sure we had all the tools to write an amazing paper. Always willing to discuss topics and you can tell he has a lot of knowledge in every field. Take his class!
His lectures gave basic grammar rules and information on essay structure that was a repeat from high school. However, his rubric for marking was unclear and I was unable to make any progress in my essay skills. I would not recommend him because there was a disconnect between what he taught and the intensity of his marking.
Very hard marker but if you work hard and take his advice it's possible to get an A! He is an amazing lecturer, very engaging, helpful and totally clear about his expectations. If you pay attention and apply what he teaches, you'll do well.
He's soooo hilarious!! strongly recommend
Definitely one of my favorite profs that I'll remember for a long time ! He was extremely helpful and easy going, seems kind of intimidating at first but when you get to know him he's a very funny guy! He's flexible with due dates and I never felt overwhelmed in his class except for when there was an essay due. Ask for extra help if you want an A!
Class covered pretty basic concepts. He explained thing pretty well but it was unclear how he was marking.
Great teacher, understands that most students are taking his course because they have to and turns it into a joke. Very accessible outside of class, and cares a lot to make sure that lectures are funny and keep you listening. Favourite university teacher!
Awesome prof, especially for first years who are a little scared writing big university papers. Loved his enthusiasm and energy he brings to his lectures to make learning grammar and writing less dry. Made me laugh everyday, actually learnt a lot and made me excited to go to his classes.
My favourite Professor so far. He is so funny and actually makes me want to go to his classes. There is only a couple short stories that are mandatory readings. As long as you go to his class and follow his instructions, you will improve your writing and get a good grade.
He's hilarious and makes the dullest topics exciting, you'll wanna attend his classes just for fun. He's a little hard on marking, but in general he's fair with his grading. His assignment criteria and instructions are always clear.
always a fun class, the discussion group was a lot shorter than scheduled, but that should not be a problem.
Best prof I've had in my first year so far. He knows how to teach (unlike other English profs) and puts you in position to succeed by giving you tips on how to write a good essay. Also very lenient with deadlines. I recommend him to every first year student out there.
Great, interesting lectures and it helps that he's hilarious. Has high expectations from students and is a tougher grader, but super informative and you'll learn a lot. However, if you are struggling he isn't always accommodating - not exactly the nicest/most empathetic prof out there.
Anyone taking workshop in essay writing should seek him out as a prof! He somehow managed to make Friday evening lectures enjoyable to attend. Grading criteria is clear, and incorporation of any feedback given on previous essays is guaranteed to pay off on future essays.
His class was entirely asynchronous so I did not get the chance to interact with him as I was in the TA's group, but he was entirely straightforward about what he expected from his and how we would be marked. He was very clear and his class was structured well. 100% recommend to first year students, he taught how to write essays perfectly!
He recorded all his lectures. There were no office hours or DGDs. He does not like answering question on emails which I never understood why. He provides you all the reading material. Even if you don't read the articles you can still get an A+ It's an essay class just make sure you give yourself time to write those essays.
He did not teach a single thing all semester. He sent us YouTube video recordings of the course when he taught it in the summer, which included incorrect information. He grades very unfairly on the essays, yet didn't teach us how to improve. I took the course with him because I saw the good rating here but don't be fooled! I get normally A's fyi
I have always been pretty bad at english. I took this course so that I could learn something to really make my writing stronger, but I feel ripped off. All the lectures are old recorded videos of literally his face while he speaks. He didn't do the dgds or live sessions for questions. Overall, I just feel like this was a pretty bad course:/
His online class only have (1)video from Youtube (2)Word Documents from his email. Thats the way he teach you. I would rather than learn by myself. SB prof
I am so surprised by the positive reviews on here. My experience with him has been anything but. The course is comprised of Word documents and YouTube videos. There is no DGD. He has a ridiculous email policy (not to mention that half of his lecture time is spent telling students not to email him). He is pompous and arrogant. Stay away.
If you ask, he provides great feedback. This class is pretty straightforward and definitely improved my essay writing skills. The way the class is set up follows the chronological order of writing an essay and comes in handy for writing the final essay!
He does a great job developing your essay writing skills and guides you through the entire process. Lectures were recorded and there were no DGDs. He's accessible outside of class and responds to his emails regularly so reach out for help if you need it! His marking can be a little tough and unclear at first, but in the end, it is fair
it is too hard to get a good grade in his class and he is very demanding please avoid him if you can
Avoid this professor at all costs. He is way too demanding and nearly impossible to have a satisfying grade with him. Email responses are horrible and too vague. I don't recommend him!
I loved having Professor Gildea for my English class. He did an amazing job covering all the bases of essay writing, grammar, etc. I feel a lot more prepared for university than I did before taking his class. Definitely recommend!! You do have to listen to all your lectures, but the assignments are straightforward and clear.
Professor Gildea is an engaging lecturer and a solid choice for ENG1100. While I was not in his group for the DGD, I did watch his pre-recorded lectures and found them helpful. The content is pretty basic (grammar, structure, etc), but it was refreshing to get a clear foundation that I know will help me with university-level writing later on.
In the online classes, he records all his classes in advance and then leaves all the exams and other work to the teaching assistants. He doesn't respond to student emails and never really shows up for class.
While he is funny don't let that fool you. You'd think being a professor he would be doing his job but nope. All lectures were YouTube videos from last semester, and don't even think about emailing him because he won't respond anyway, or will respond saying basically figure it out yourself. 0/10 do not recommend
If I could go back, I would never choose this professor ever again. He has unclear grading criteria, strict marking, and expectations.
Professor Gildea is great. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow. The only thing I would have liked is more direction in what he was looking for in certain assignments. I found that when writing them, I was never sure if my assignments were meeting to his standards. (he usually gave outlines, but not always)
He is rude and IF he answers emails they are 3 words and passive-aggressive. all lectures are pre-recorded from years ago. you will be teaching yourself. do not his class. He doesn't provide good feedback, though he does grade quickly. If you are graded by TA's he will not help you, and you will wait months to receive grades and feedback.
Good professor honestly. I took his English online course and it was really helpful that I could just do the work on my own time. He is a bit of a tough grader. Make sure to ask questions during DGDs and take his feedback from your work and use it. Your mark will substantially improve if you do. Good teacher overall and funny guy.
The online class was an absolute mess. Lectures are all pre-recorded and if you have questions expect to wait a while to receive a response. Took months to get grades back and the criteria for the assignments were impossible to figure out. Would not recommend taking this course online.
Avoid this professor at all cost. Hes extremely rude towards student and will make jokes that are offensive. I've had to file a formal complaint against him. His teaching is horrible you will not learn anything new. Example he believes conjunctions are too confusing for students therefore we should not use them on a grammar quiz.
This is a pointless class that thought me what not to do regarding essays and especially grammar. I took this course while being a second year and almost everything he said regarding other professors is a lie. He's very rude in emails and during lectures. Avoid at all cost
Awful teacher. Not helpful at all. Boring and long lectures. Does not care if you are struggling. He will ignore you and call you out in front of the class. Do not take his class.
Lectures were asynchronous with virtual discussion groups every week. The professor cancelled half of the virtual meetings and repeatedly told students not to email him questions. He doesn't use Brightspace, lost my assignments, and sarcastically responded to my emails. Avoid his class at all cost. I went in with TGPA of 10 and got a B.
He doesn't even use grading guidelines or rubrics for this class because he claims it is "high school" stuff. What?? It is like he intentionally wants to make it difficult for us to not succeed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. And don't even think about arguing about your mark. He acts like it's a chore to actually teach. Unbelievable
super super harsh grader, doesn't give examples or outlines and claims its "high school stuff" to give one wouldn't recommend taking this class at all!!!! When he hands back assignment he follows with an email saying not to email him and to wait to the zoom meeting and that if you do email he will not reply, avoid at all costs!!!
i should have took someone else when i had the chance
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
Prof refused to give clear grading criteria, and always stated that he would answer any questions in zoom meetings. Yet, most zoom meetings consisted of him being overwhelmed by questions and refusing to answer all of them? Not sure how he is still a prof as he says he has office hours which are his workshops but then refuses to answer questions
He makes things so difficult for no reason. He does not explain things well enough. He is not open to answering questions in a constructive manner. He is not open to any remarking. The feedback he gives is, funnily enough, ridden with spelling errors to the degree where i simply don't know what hes trying to tell me. Dont take.
Professor Gildea is a bad prof. He posts all of his lectures online pre-recorded and hates when we e-mail him. I think he's just lazy. Also, he doesn't accept late submissions even if it's 1 minute after the deadline which is weird for a first-year prof. Also, he's a bad prof overall, his comments don't make sense and he's not really available.
The professor is amazing as an individual but as a teacher not so much. When it came to the Zoom he barely did anything. He would sing and talk so much that we ran out of time and could not ask questions. Although this class had a professor it felt like I was learning completely on my own. I would give it that he is lenient with his marking.
This prof was such a pain to deal with. He often told us not to email him with questions, his instructions for assignments were extremely vague, and his feedback was often vague as well. Every time someone had a question, he was extremely aggressive in response and often entirely unhelpful. Do not take this class.
His so-called help sessions are not helpful at all. Whenever students ask questions, he responds rudely and his answers don't even help (his only response is to "re-watch the lectures"). He doesn't respond to emails either.
Don't take this prof, not worth it. His Zoom sessions are just him refusing to answer any of our questions. Instructions are not clear and the feedback he gives is pointless (like we could figure that out ourselves without him) and funnily filled with spelling errors too, you can tell the feedback he gives has no effort put into it.
His lectures are pre-recorded, I only watched 1 before never touching them again. Attended maybe 1-2 zoom calls, there's really no point since its literally a repeat of grade 12. Woke up late and missed our midterm, wrote it in 20 minutes, emailed him asking to submit cause I forgot and he let me 30 min after due. Finishing the class above 95.
Everything is in his lectures. Quizzes and exams are striaghtforward idk why a lot of people have a lot of questions when their questions ask about things covered in lectures. Stopped going to zoom calls cause it isn't worth it and people kept asking nonsense questions. Grades fairly if you do it properly and can actually write essays. Funny tho
couldve been better but i'd rather him than the inperson prof. as long as you can write essays and summaries pretty well then youre fine i guess. work is easy but he doenst respond to emails unless you magically email him when hes looking at his computer. my grades have been fine- my gpa relied on this course since science sucks
This class was dreadful. Gildea refuses to check his email for anything, he wants all questions asked in the zoom sessions. That would be fine, if he actually answered the questions. He either gives the most vague answer or he'll call your question stupid and tell you to rewatch the lectures (the answer is not in the lecture). Protect your peace.
Dr. Gildea was certainly a character. Was he funny, sure? Did he make a lot of jokes instead of taking the time to properly discuss important assignments? Sometimes. Did this strong disbelief in rubrics throw me off? Maybe. Were the assignments easy? Yes. But did he find a way to make it confusing? Sure did,
wouldn't recommend him. Doesn't answer emails and calls you out infront of the class. very rude and will see an email coming up every week saying "DONT EMAIL ME FOR QUESTIONS" throws in lame jokes during class and wastes time. Did the whole assignments and class on my own and struggled with zero help from him.
Not accessible outside of zoom calls. Impossible to get questions answered. As the examination period began, without any notice we got an email not to contact him again as the course was done. This was before the final essay was due.
Refused to respond to emails whether that be questions about instructions on assignments or concerns about grades. His instructions were unclear and written informally but again you were unable to ask questions about the instructions which was an incredible pain in the ass. A very tough grader as well. I would avoid taking this class with him.
absolutely TERRIBLE!!!! he does not give a crap about his students and whether they pass or fail. Do not take his class IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT who is not as familiar with citing and paraphrasing as domestic students.
Lowkey didn't have a must see criteria list for half of the assignments and told us to just "Figure it out". Other than that he's a sassy king
After receiving my grade back for ONLY the first assignment, none of these reviews are lying about him being a harsh grader. Chooses to nitpick the smallest details and takes away so many points. Completely unreasonable for this professor to teach an introductory course since he indirectly insults his students with the grade he returns to them.
trash
NEVER TAKE HIM. WORST PROF I HAVE EVER TAKEN!!
Very tough grader. None of the feedback aligned with his expectations from before. So much could be improved if he had a clear criterion outlining the expectations for an assignment. The lessons are okay but they don't prepare you for the assignments. Just avoid this class, take it in person if you have to.
I took his class back in the spring-summer 2023 term, and my reviews were taken down... Before choosing to take this course with him, maybe think about why my comments were taken down... Laugh at his jokes if you would like to score brownie points! I shed my blood, sweat, and tears to earn this A.
At the beginning of the semester, he stated that the rumors about him not replying to emails were not true. It has been many days and he has not replied to my email regarding an assignment. Avoid him at all costs.
racist. teaches nothing. just want to grade paper and give nonsense feedback. refuse to help students improve. AVOID
I had this prof two years ago and he still gives me nightmares
very nice man, but his feeback is very vauge and will not offer you help! but other than that it was a good course
When it comes to grading the feedback is inconsistent. He gives the same feedback for different students and does not provide criteria for what is expected. Quizzes are inconsistent with what is taught (Questions on the quiz were not taught in class as he stated the ideas are "unimportant" and "used improperly" and therefore will not be included.
Tough grader, unclear expectations. Consider using unstuck AI and textbook resources to prep - saved me time. Avoid if possible, take in-person if needed.
There are a few readings you need to do. Class is easy if you are good at essay writing.
Does not provide clear grading criteria on assignments. His ambiguous feedbacks could not help any parts of your assignments nor exams. Does not respect sass students requesting for extensions. He may be a good person but sadly not helpful at all as a professor.
My issue with this professor is the vague feedback on assignments. It feels like trying to read his mind on what is exactly expected of you to improve. He gives criticisms without any clear indicator on how to remedy the issue. This makes them feel more like pointless nagging. Quite a humorous teacher, but this class was overall a poor experience.
gildea belittles and bullies students when asked about course material. this wannabe comic forces us to react to his jokes or he won't move on to the next parts of his lectures. he discourages us and scares us into not sending emails for fear of retaliation. he couldn't make it as a comedian and he sure as heck couldn't make it as an english prof.
