This professor was just SO AWFUL, and made going to class feel physically painful. You're only graded on the two tests you take (the midterm and final), as well as the two opinion papers that you have to write. Note-taking for this class is stressful, and he never uses powerpoints. If you do take this class DONT have him as a professor.

I literally made an account just so I can rate this guy. I saw someone else say he made class so awful and physically painful to attend and I couldn't have said it better myself. He makes the class and exams so unnecessarily hard, he doesn't use a power-point or any form of slides or notes so trying to take notes is extremely hard and stressful

He provided little guidance when it came to 3 assignments each worth a large amount of your total grade. He does not provide notes and expects you to take notes strictly from his fast-paced lectures, and often uses large words making it difficult to understand what exactly is happening, especially when discussing complex topics.

I think this professor is as old as the subject he teaches. He never uses blackboard including grade posting. All his lectures are too fast paced to take notes properly and he grades based off of one book report and the midterm and final WHICH ARE ALL OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS.

He is so biased in what he teaches and taught entirely wrong subjects due to his own interest in politics and the men of the time period. He focuses on Jefferson and Madison and their RELATIONSHIP as opposed to the actual history that went on at the time. It was genuinely comical and frustrating. He is the only professor at WCSU I will be avoiding.

He seems like a very nice guy, but is an awful professor. He doesn't use blackboard and offers very few assignments, so it is hard to boost your grade. All he did was lecture, and not use any form of presentation while doing so, and gave little to no clues as to what was on the exams. Avoid if you can.

He clearly loved talking about history, he's incredibly passionate for it. If you want to do well in his class you HAVE to take notes, he talks and doesn't stop, he might write some key words on the board but there's no presentations or anything provided. You're only graded on three things, the Midterm, Final, and a paper based on a book you read.

The actual content of this class is not hard to understand, but Professor Gutzman talks fast and makes it more confusing than it has to be. TAKE NOTES. Even though they are not helpful at all for the two tests. No guidance, impossible to study for them. Overall, please avoid. I can assume this course is 1000x easier with a better prof.

He is a nice guy and easy to talk to but his class is unbearable. Writes little to nothing on the board so you are to take notes strictly on what he is saying. Midterm and Final are all open ended questions and are limited to 50 minutes for completion. There are no assignments other than a mandatory paper on a book of GW.

Your grade depends entirely on two tests and two papers and that's it. Moreover, he spends the whole time lecturing with no slides or writing or anything so there's no way to know what he wants you to write down. Lastly, he is very conservative and he is not very careful to not let this influence his lessons, it is incredibly obvious.

Do not take this class if you enjoy being happy. he is the worst prof I have ever had. he doesn't post anything on blackboard and your entire class grade depends on the two test he has in the year which are impossible to study for because he rarely ever writes anything on the board, so you have no idea what to take notes on. please fire this man.

Would not recommend to anyone who values their mental well-being. Tough grader with an unclear grading scale and vague, opinion based exams that you will fail if your opinion is not identical to his.

Professor Gutzman is by far the worst professor I've had at WCSU. I gave him my midterm twice and he lost it both times. He only writes the topics on the whiteboard so notes are really crucial for his class. The lectures are very intense. I'm scared for the freshman who are going to have him for the 2025-26 school year. DON'T RECOMMEND AT ALL.

Don't take this class if you value your happiness and sanity. Your midterm and final grades entirely depend on two papers, each worth 40% of your grade. He will not say what topics will be on the exams, so you need to study hard. Professor Gutzman does not use blackboard or powerpoints either, so you really have no clue what to take notes on.

Professor Gutzman is very knowledgeable on the subject, but the way the class is conducted is not good at all. Blackboard remains empty the entire semester and he does not use presentations. You NEED to take good notes. He will not tell you what is on the exams so study really hard. I usually love history, but hated it throughout his class. Avoid.

I thought he was going to be impatient and strict. He's not that, he's passionate about the course material, he's pleasant, respectful to his students and intelligent. It is a hard course, attendance isn't technically necessary but anything he says in class may be on the exams. If you like learning about history you'll like his class.
