He's a very fidgity prof, and he likes to give examples of nearly impossible problems--just for fun. He is helpful; he gives weekly homework, but when returned, it shows corrections and explanations.
Is one of the best math profs in the department.
Acts kind of **** which is funny. Gives lots of examples. Lots of homework but is always willing to show how to do the problems.
Tends to lose train of thought. Makes the class very confusing sometimes.
Somewhat dis-organized but fairly helpful and has easy tests.
good teacher, questionable as a man and gives somewhat difficult tests. there is weekly homework but he is always available to help you or answer questions. as he says "i pretty much know every answer in the book"
I question his sexuality, but he makes class entertaining. Who doesnt love his giggles & the chalk on his face? He's a good professor. Could try doing examples of his own cuz he does everything from the book. Weekly homework was easy & the tests were fairly easy as well. Bad w/parital credit though.
Makes the class unnecessarily difficult and loaded with busy work. On the bright side his exams were straight out of the mounds of homework, there were no surprises. Heard he's good for calc 1,2,3, but avoid him for Dif Eq at all costs.
Where to begin with this guy. He's a nut. Lots of homework. Prepare to take notes, he likes to put the whole book into notes
Wow...He seems a little "festive." He was difficult to understand and I watched my friend who got straight A's in calc I and II almost fail his class. His chalk baths are pretty funny to watch though.
Very helpfull always in his office willing to help you. Gives Homework which can be hard at times but does get you ready for the tests and final
He explains everything in full... but he does it in a way that you are completely clueless as to what you could possibly do with this information until the very end of his lecture. At this point you are like "Oh." His tests are what I would call LOADED with algebra and can take up to 2.5 hours.
if you're a smart kid, he's the guy to take, small homeowrk assignments once a week (5-10 problems), but they are hard and he thoroughly grades it too, but the exams are like the homework. He's feminim which makes class funny at times. He will give you lots of help outside of class if you need it, but i wouldnt take him unless ur a smart kid
he goes through material quickly, assigns tough homework which is a mandatory assignment, and is a little weird. his tests are tough. only take him if you are and expert in math
Great Proff. always in his office to help. Homework can be a little hard at times but he is all ways willing to help you. tests are long but does prepare you for the final and homework is almost 1/3 of the grade
Very willing to help with problems, easy to find in office. Not an easy class and you will have to spend time on homework, but it makes you learn the material well. Overall pretty good.
I regretted every moment of this class. He teaches off of theory versus examples and the examples he does use are from the book. It wasn't uncommon to have an exam lasting close to 4 hours - I was usually in the middle to leave. DOESN'T PREPARE YOU FOR TESTS AT ALL! These questions came out of nowhere. Gave 5 quizzes in 2 weeks, Do not take him
HE IS HORRIBLE...HE DOESN'T TEACH ANYTHING...DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
very helpfull teacher!
He is very good at what he does but he cannot teach it well. He is very willing to help, but the class moves extremely fast and will keep moving even if half the class does not know what is going on. If you have had the material before you might be ok, but if you have not do not take him. He is very nice but probably the worst math teacher ive had.
He is the weirdest man ive met in my life and lacks all social skills. His class is hard though he knows what hes doing. I think he lives in his office, he will help you, though I sought other help. Tests are hours long and homework never ends. Its hard work and never graded with sympathy (or mercy). He seems kind otherwise and tries hard.
Alright so far this guy is awful. He is absolutely RELENTLESS on homework. You do not get any partial credit if your answer is wrong and if you have the correct answer if your format is wrong you lose almost all of the points!! And homework is almost 1/4 of your grade!! His homework system is complete BS!
He is absolutely merciless on his grading. You get points off for things like not putting an equal sign. You get two "short" homework assignments a week which are time consuming. He doesn't prepare you very well for the exams. His exams are also really long and hard. It wasn't uncommon for over half the class to fail. Would not recommend.
SUCH A CREATURE! His class was hilarious because of his chalk-on-the-face habit. Tests were pretty difficult, but the homework never took longer than 30min-1hour. I was never good at math but managed a B.
Really nice guy and try's to help you whenever you need help and go to him but grades very harshly, sometimes unfairly. Possible to turn in homework with all the right answers and work and get a 40/50 for very minuet mistakes
VERY harsh grader. He will take off for just about anything. He gives a lot of homework yet he takes forever to grade it. His tests are way too long and sometimes took 2.5 hours to finish even if you know the material. The math department's calc 3 final was a breeze after taking his tests.
I've never loved a professors personality as much as I love his. He's CRAZY.. but good crazy. I had him for Calc and his tough teaching style prepares you for future classes. If you're lazy, do not take his class. If you enjoy interesting characters, and can look past his insane grading expectations, take him!!!!
Haertzen is a total G. You can often find him way after office hours and he'll always stop to talk to you. His quirks are absolutely hilarious and he either takes forever to grade, or he returns tests overnight.
Takes off points for absolutely everything. If you dont put an equal sign or a degree symbol. you get points off. ABSOLUTELY does not prepare you for the exam and does not do a review what-so-ever. DO NOT TAKE
Alright professor overall, but i missed class once two days before a test and the next day he went off on me. Also he is a very tough grader.
He is a good teacher but you need to study. I failed my first test, went in and talked with him for the rest of my homeworks and tests and got an A on the final. He wants you to succeed and is very nice, use his office hours because some of the homework is hard. Overall very interesting and he is awkwardly funny.
Good prof. Homework is tough and will make you work, though it prepares you for very similar problems on the test. No quizzes. Quirky guy, but a really nice guy if you get to know him.
This teacher is horrible. He messes up all the time and then when someone corrects him he acts as if he knew he made the mistake. Also he teaches in a confusing manner. Very few actual math problems and more proofs which doesn't help in this class.
He is a little strange at times but kind. Definitely go in and talk to him regularly and often. He is very helpful outside of class. He is a very hard grader! He makes you work for a passing grade but wants you to succeed. Very knowledgeable. Kind of funny in a weird way at times. Wouldn't recommend him, they're better options but he could be worse
This class is going to be rough if you don't take it seriously. He likes to see students actively participating in class, and will point it out if you don't. Tests are going to be impossible to pass if you don't study for them. However, if you put in the time (which is a lot), you will do just fine
Overall I'd say he's a very "meh" teacher. The homework is usually pretty hard, which helps prepare you for his tests which are also hard. What I dislike most about him is that he's a really tough grader. He takes of points for a lot of really nit picky things. His lectures are also kinda confusing at times. Pick him if you have no other option.
Dr. Haertzen is definitely a quirky guy. His homeworks and tests are long (3 hour block exams), but he is a fair grader and gives plenty of partial credit. He also gave a few quizzes. Class was basically doing examples and how processes were derived, so my note book was full. I had him for bothe Calc 2 and 3 , and I would recommend him for both
Disappointing method of teaching, but most of all, Mr. Haertzen grades based on your work's likeness to his way of finding the correct answer. If your work isn't perfectly notated in his preferred manner, your correct answer is worthless. Often times he will not even correct your wrong, instead relenting only a red slash across your hard efforts.
He is interesting guy. His class is very fast pace so know your speed learning. I'm a slow learner so he was a tougher professor for me. Class work is straight out of book. Exams are long and tough. Exams are based on difficulty of problems and not simply the concepts. Grading is harsh. You may have the right answer but if not done his way, wrong!
I took Professor Haertzen for Calc 2 and for DiffEq. Honestly if you just put in hard work it isn't difficult. I got an A in Calc 2 and my exam average for DiffEq was a 95%. Even with all of his nit-picking at small things, it isn't that difficult to get it right. He just has specific ways he wants things done. He's a very intelligent man.
First off, he is not an accommodating person, so if you are in sports or have a sick relative I would avoid him. Marks the slightest details wrong and you definitely have to show all your work with no missed symbols or steps. Appears friendly at first but mid semester he turns out to be not so nice.
He is absolutely terrible. His teaching skills are fair at most. (At least for this class) If you have a question about homework in class, well good luck getting it answered. Me: "could you by any chance go over number 21 from the homework when class starts please?" Haertzen: "No. I already covered that in class. I had office hours yesterday."
This professor is unclear and extremely rude. Whenever a student asks a question, he proceeds to get angry and be rude towards the student. Asking questions is a no-no. As for being unclear, this professor will expect a student to write a super specific answer to a unspecific question. It's impossible to know what he wants in an answer.
Stay away from him. He has little respect for his students. All he does is read off the many packets he gives out with no additional examples on problems. If you can't learn like that good luck in the class with him.
Not a bad teacher. He gives packets of notes, and printed out homework for you. The notes are very easy to study, and expect everything in the notes and homework to be on the exam. Make sure you do it exactly as he wants it, and never show up late to class.
In all honesty he's a really good professor. At first I didn't like him a whole lot, but you get used to his style. He goes through the formulas and then does a lot of examples. Another thing that's nice is he works right out of the book so there isn't information missing if you read the book.
The worst math professor at Platteville. Very rude to students. Once someome raised their hand and he shot them down saying "Im only concerned with people that are passing this class" If you ask questions, he will get very angry at you. He grades very harshly. If you screw up on a problem he puts a red line through it, stops grading and you get a 0
Hardest class I've ever taken
I dreaded going to this class every time
One word: Ouch.
He is a tough grader, but I think that all the math profs are, and the homework only counts for 10% of your final grade. He is fairly helpful in office hours. If you ask a question in class he probably won't answer it well, and often will get mad at you for asking it.
Would not reccomend
Kevin Haertzen is an intelligent person but a poor teacher. He only cares about the students that are doing well in his class. He will act nice until the drop date, then becomes decidedly worse towards the end of the year.
Don't get me wrong. Kevin is a nice, gentle dude. So far I have only seem him get angry once in lecture (He despises phones in class). He is very by-the-book. His lecture consists of writing concepts and equations on the board and he doesn't really explain again. After having passed AP Calc in high school with a B I'll be lucky If I don't fail.
Kevin Haertzen is not a great professor. He grades harshly, and doesn't explain concepts. His teaching style includes writing proofs on the board and doing 1 or 2 examples. He then moves on. Very fast paced. If you take him good luck
He is a great professor because he presents information in a straightforward and organized way. His homework is helpful, exams are not outrageous and he really cares about students and their understanding. He was always very helpful during office hours too.
Kevin knows what he is doing and gives out good examples but grades homework as an exam. I had handed in a homework that I had all answers correct and received a 64% for notation not to his liking. It is extremely frustrating to deal with. Not many assignments are available to recover your grade.
This professor is one of the most difficult professors I have ever had. If you take him, good luck
Calc 2 is hard in general but I felt he made the course a little easier. Obviously if you don't show up to class you will not pass, but I feel like there are lots of opportunities through homework to boost your grade. He made class feel fun and I enjoyed taking it with him.
Do not expect to have the tests be like the notes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is very rude to students during his lectures. When you ask a question, he proceeds to basically call you an idiot in front of the class. Says a test will be 3 pages, it was 8. If you don't put an answer the way he wants it, he marks it wrong even if it is right. Get ready to teach yourself if you have him.
Kevin is a more 'old school' math professor. Writes out everything on the board and gives you everything you need to do the homework provided you take good notes. I do not know what his online lectures are like. Moderate homework and will give opportunities to earn extra credit if the whole class bombs a test. (NOTE: Pre-Covid experence)
Great professor who was a nice guy and willing to get to know you beyond the class room. Was helpful in office hours and willing to help. He did lecture a lot and it was a lot of notes but he did do plenty
Dr. Haertzen expects you to do the work his way. If you don't do the same steps he shows you in the lectures you don't get the points on tests and homework. He is a tough grader. I took AP Calc in highschool and this is a completely different way of learning calc. Don't be afraid to go to his office hours because he's always there to help.
Won't give you clear answers and exams are SUPER TOUGH. You don't take exams during your actual class time instead you have to go for some random time like on a Thursday from like 6 to 8 pm, and it will be 3 pages each page front and back. One of the worst calc 2 prof because he assigns A LOT OF HW with none of it on the exams
wants you to do things his way only. Not helpful during class or office hours. Is exam heavy and a tough grader. Makes the class as difficult as possible, will blame the class for poor scores, when wrong will blame students if everyone got a question wrong, will basically call you dumb and writes the hw and will not give clear details
Felt like he belittled me whenever I need help and went to office hours. But, exams are not too bad if you spend a lot of time outside of class teaching yourself the material.
He loves to give out assignments and test dates with no heads up. Often times giving take-home exams and hws over the weekend and have it due by Sunday night. He grades things very poorly and almost never gives out full points even if you copied his own layout. His videos are all over the place and it feels like a scavanger hunt to find something.
I think Dr. Haertzen would be a much better professor to take in person, but his online teaching could use some work. He has trouble managing due dates and keeping a class schedule. This led to him cramming in 7 assignments in the last week of class in place of our final test. These assignments can easily take over an hour and are due the same day.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! There are much better teachers to take and this one by all means is terrible. His lectures do not prepare you for the homework. Homework prepares you for the test, but that does not help if you do not understand the homework. He grades terribly and honestly should retire.
Should not be a teacher. Multiple times after class he would send out emails saying he did problems wrong in class. Very smart man but should not be teaching. His tests are not like the homework and if you go to office hours, he essentially yells at you till you get the answer on your own. There are better teachers DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Haertzen is very knowledgeable, but he struggles to teach the material effectively. He skips random sections and problems frequently while spending far too long on concepts that are very old. He also got upset at the class after exams with poor grades and said they were "pathetic" and implied that we were not trying. Smart man, bad teacher.
Had to constantly be corrected by students. If you don't do things the exact way he likes it he will fail you, regardless of whether you understand the material. Berates the class often for not doing well despite not teaching well and his homework is not representative of what's on his tests.
Unless you are really math savvy, DO NOT take this professor. The tests are nothing like the HW and he grades them very harshly. I would go to the tutor and have something right only to have him mark it wrong because it wasn't done "his" way. He also is NOT accommodating to student athletes and quite rude. Shame on Platteville, waste of tuition $
Beware. Terrible instruction, no feedback, ruthless grader, and mean. He poked fun at the autistic student. Enough said. This man should not be teaching, if you can even call it that.
*MATH3830 At the beginning of the semester, he taught well and it felt like he cared for the students and course. Towards the middle/end, doesn't appear that way. He just prints all the notes and doesn't add much to them. He assigns alot of homework and hasn't graded half of it. Also is a tough grader and provides ZERO feedback for homework.
Kevin is one of the worst Calculus teachers I have ever had in my entire life. Never uses the textbook except for one assignment with four graded book problems. Doesn't give any clear feedback and will mark the entire problem wrong if you don't do it the way he teaches, even if you got it right. Normally the class average is around 45% every test.
Professor Haertzen is a great professor for calc 2 you fill out not packets in class to make sure you have everything you need to succeed. He is a tough grader but in the end you will understand all material better than every and not make as many small mistakes he get you for. Very nice guy and wants to help you in anyway possible.
Very difficult class, but highly intelligent teacher. My feelings on Prof. Haertzen's teaching are mixed. While he honors the students who go the extra mile to work and communicate, he comes with some quirks that especially first year college students may find harsh or hard to understand. Don't interrupt his lectures- he hates it. Go to his office.
I enjoyed having Dr Haertzen. The class is meant to be hard. A lot of memorization. He grades harshly but that's just like the rest of the math department here. Look over the past 3 homework and know how to solve each problem before tests. I got 50% on my first exam and still managed to pull through. Just put some effort in and go to office hours.
He's alright, generally he good at explaining concepts and getting his point across. Pretty harsh grader though, takes points off for things if not done exactly how he wants which is mostly why I don't have an A. Not good with technology and only uses physical paper, so you might have to look out for when things are due or lose track of materials.
Grading is ruthless and nonsensical. You'll be lucky to get a C+ on a test if you don't show your work exactly how he wants it. Advice: do practice problems before each test, go in during office hours, or take Calc II with someone else. 2/5
His teaching style is very different than others and in my opinion is very horrible and difficult to learn from. I was better skipping lectures and learning by myself with other people. His grading system is ruthless and will take all points off if 1 part is not done his way.
He teaches well enough, but he is incredibly tough on writing notation and will fail you accordingly if you write things wrong. Even if you get the right answer.
He had no consistency with what he takes point off for on the homework. He is very nice and is willing to try and work with students but it was very difficult to understand exactly how he wants the hw to look and exactly how much work he wants us to show as he will do problems in class one way and then take points off for the same work later on.
