hes very nice and helpful. hes kinda funny and its altogether a decent class. so u should take it if u like european history. (and take it w/him) =)
Herlihy is ridiculous. His intent is to embarass his students and ridule their opinions.I question his loyalty as an American.I'm sure he's a great professor in european history because he'd rather be in europe, and frankly I'd rather him be there too.
This man is a socialist. Ties socialism into any topic, regardless of relevance...Seems like a nice guy other than his hatred of the current state of America.
I hate this class with a passion. He tells you to think broader and learn all different sides of things but in reality he just wants you to believe what he believes. If you know what's best, dont take US History with him!
This man is a radical. His teaching methods are questionable. His class is okay only because all of the quizzes and papers help to balance your grade. Alot of people taking this class hate it
This guy is a joke. He doesn't seem like he knows what he's doing AT ALL. His "lectures" are really just incoherent babbles. This man is a complete Socialist. He ridicules the students. TERRIBLE MAN.
This man is absolutely horrible! He's not a good teacher at all. I can't wait till the end of the year to let his supervisors know my opinion of him. It won't be nice. For UCF to keep him as a professor is an embarrassment to the university.
He is a good and fair teacher. The class is very easy if you do the assignments and take good lecture notes.
It is a pretty hard class, you have to really work at it but it isnt impossible to do well. You arent allowed to slack off in this class, but I guess that's what college is all about. =)
I withdrew from this course. I didn't know what he wanted me to write about because I didn't know what he wanted to hear, it certainly wasn't my opinion. I also fell behind on the weekly quizzes because I didn't keep up on the chapters. And hes creepy.
He assigns a lot of homework, but gives you a lot of help in your grades. ex. if you fail the first half, and you do well th second half, he doesnt count the first.

a hard class but if u do the work the quizes are easy he looks as if hes always **** listening to his lectures are funny as hell because hes very sarcastic and ****es about everything
I thought this class was easy. If you do the homework you will get 100's on the quizzes, THEY ARE OPEN NOTE! and so is the midterm and final! How much more easy can that be. Just take notes in class and you will do great! Its a fun class.
HE KNOWS HIS STUFF HE JUST SEEMS TO HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE WAY AMERICA WORKS AND ISN'T AFRAID TO VOICE HIS OPINION EVERY CLASS. YOU MUST HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE HOMEWORK BECAUSE THE QUIZZES COME DIRECTLY FROM IT.
Republicans stay away! The man has a very strange dichotemy in him. Extremely liberal on political issues, yet he's very conservative minded about issues surrounding popular culture and the like. An easy B if you have time for his assignments.
This is not an easy class; it recommends a lot of work and constant dedication. However, if you do the work and show up to class the midterm and final are easy and to the point. You must show him interest in his class and he will meet you half way if you

I didn't like him very much as a teacher. His writting assignments were kind of unclear and he assigns ALOT of reading. His grading is fair though. He has strong opinions and he forces them on you. I really dreaded going to his class.

The worst teacher I have ever had!! Makes no sense at all and acts as if he knows everything. If you dont think the way he does be prepared to fail.
Doesn't go over assignments, which quizes and exams are based on. So if your opinion doesn't match up with his, you'll get it wrong. I enjoyed going to Chm and Cal class rather than this class.
Teaches from a book that I don't understand and lectures about things that it seems you don't even need to know.
HORRIBLE TEACHER, HE IS NOT CLEAR AND QUIZZES ARE BASED ON READING ASSIGNMENTS THAT HE NEVER GOES OVER IN CLASS. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROFESSR AS HORRIBLE AS HE IS.
This is definitely not an easy class - u must have a very clear understanding of assignments b/c the tests & quizzes come directly from them. Make sure you ask him about anything you are unsure of b/c he does not go over them in class. If you show interest & have good answers in class you'll do well
He is a good socratic teacher. But, he does dislike many western practices, like brainwashed MTV or football watchers. I was disappointed at first, but got the hang of it after the mid-term. Do the chapter assigments, participate and you will get a good grade. 20 point extra credit quiz questions!
Very hard class! He can be helpful, but at the same time he'll discourage you. The assignments are almost never talked about and his lectures are nothing about what the test and quizzes are on. Please stay away from this guy, you'll regret taking this class... I know I did!
All these kids hate his class, but he just makes you think about things. He challanges you, that's why people don't like him, he makes them think. If you want to learn take this class, if you want to sit and be an idiot, get out of college. The best professor I've ever had. I learned so much.

This class requires a lot of work, but all quizzes and tests are open notes, just make sure you do all the reading and work or else you won't do well. He does make you think which is good, but he hates the way America is run and no matter what, he's right. If you like to discuss points, stay away.
I took this guy about 2 years ago and I still log on to warn others because its that important. He hates America-He hates athletes,NO DISSCUSION. If you don't care thats fine. But when he insults you, your beliefs, and your nation - and won't allow you to respond - You can't say you weren't warned!!

He is a fantastic teacher! He makes you think and challenges your ideas and thoughts. Do the reading and you will do well. He will help you outside of class to! Best professor I've had yet
Dont take him. Hates anything american. Never statisfied with your work. If you want to learn about ideal men and women, go ahead and take this class. You can find a better teach to teach you about the history. I wish I would have dropped.
He is a great teacher but requires a lot of work he just teaches differently. All he requires is that you think for yourself.I especially liked the african american history because I learned things about my culture that I didnt know.He does help outside of class and he really wants you to pass!
He's a good teacher, but he gives minus' in gen eds. I went to class every day and participaed in the lectures and really went out of my way to let him know I cared to do well in his class, and he gave me a minus. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, he gives you a hard time just for the sake of it.
Not as smart as he thinks, just tries to make you miserable because he seems to be.
He not that bad. The class is pretty easy just do the reading and the hw. He lets you use your notes and Hw on the quizzes, aren't any tests. Midterm and final are essay questions but he gives you them beforehand. He does make some radical liberal comment but you just have to realize thats how he is
The class isn't hard, nor is he is a bad teacher, however, I truly wish he would spend more time on the materials and less time ranting about his personal beliefs and ideals. Taking his class is a waste of your time and money. How, after all, can you trust a MAN who dislikes FOOTBALL? Right? Right?
Meh. He's an okay teacher, not too hard, gripes a lot. My biggest complaint is hearing him say we're all stupid and none of us did well on an assignment, meanwhile looking at the A on my paper.. If you want to have your intelligence in general insulted, by all means take his classes :)
Something personal happened to me this semester, and he showed me such kindness and concern. He is a hard teacher, it is hard to get an A! We lost about 50% of our class, he really seperates the cream from the milk becuase he is hard. I like him and am happy to have taken this class.
Horrible Teacher! Constantly insulting and clearly bias. Rude beyond words. Ridiculous assignments. Lost over half of the class! I can't believe a professor like this actually has a job at a University that I pay to go to. Beware! Avoid his classes if at all possible.
I was super interested in this class. I should have dropped it immediately. This guy is hard to understand. You watch lame videos almost every class and are expected to know everything. No clue on what tests are on. Register for this class with CAUTION!!!! Don't waste your time and money.
This class is murder! DO NOT TAKE!! There is an assignment due almost every class.. six essays, tons of quizes, essay tests. I wish I would have dropped. I spent more time trying to keep up with all the assignments then on the actual learning! I will not take this guy again.
Worst teacher I have ever encountered. He has absolutely no basis for his grading system, and has openly admitted that the grades his students receive are based on how he feels while he is grading them that day. If you actually want to earn a good grade in Western Civ, stay away from this teacher.
stay away from this class!!! he is a disgusting miserable old man, just take one look at him. the most unfair grader i've ever met. i walk away from class knowing more about his screwd up political views than about the subject he's actually teaching, western civ.
i prefer cal and chm than this dreaded class any day. unclear of what he wants on assignments. grades unfairly. luckily, i withdrew and i never have hear him babbling about west. civ again.
So he ISNT an awful guy, but he KILLS any shred of self esteem you may have had before taking this class(not sure if purposefully, but I think so!). Worst Text book I have EVER encountered. Quizzes are medium. Sporadic grading. Lectures make me want to poke my eyes out. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I was incredibly pissed off in the first couple of weeks until I actually went and talked to him. Kevin Herlihy knows his stuff, and opened up my eyes to a different world. By no means is he easy, and if you need help seek him out immediately. If you are serious about learning take Herlihy.
I too came into this class eagerly, and then quickly realized I should have dropped. Not only does he make you feel lower than dirt, he grades without reason. I have never felt like I wasted my money more than this class made me feel. Do not ever take this guy! Save your money and your sanity.
do Q's from book = A or B on quizzes unless they're essays, attend all classes =5 points on final grade do extra credit =1 point on final grade for each take notes on entire chap =20-50 points extra credit on quizzes. I got a B, but I worked HARD to earn it. do assignments early & he'll help you
This is a class for people who WANT to learn. He makes YOU do the work and PROVE that you're learning, but is willing to help if you come to him. Very knowledgeable and conveys the information well, gives you the exam questions a week or more ahead of time. Even gives extra credit, so show up and do the reading. :)
Probably the single worst professor in the school's history department. No respect for the dignity or intelligence of students. Contradicts himself often. Uses videos rather than lecture and squelches dissenting opinions through sheer audible volume and grading penalties. A good example of everything wrong with teaching these days.
This was a fairly difficult class, but well worth taking. This professor will give you something to think about, so it always keeps things interesting. Keep up with your work, and you'll do fine. I think he did a pretty darn good job. Jeff
nontraditional class format. you HAVE to think for yourself. Lots of work = lots of opportunity to raise your grade. interesting if you just go with the flow and dont expect straightforward lecture format. had fun, learned a lot, but only on limited tipics. take greenhaw if you want traditional large-scope eng history. an interesting experience.
Anyone that takes school seriously and is thinking about grad school should take this professor. Many people are not ready for the level of work that he expects, but if you do well in his class then any other class should be a breeze. Have an open mind and be willing to question many things you take for granted. Great class!
Easy quizzes, simply the questions you'd find in the text. However, essays are very difficult & require reference to book, lectures, & videos as well as a lot of thought.
If you want a class you can just breeze through, this class is not for you. But if you actually want to think for yourself then take this class. His style is different that may offend some people but he keeps things interesting. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours. There is a lot of work but that just means more grades to help overall
He is a horrible teacher. Do not take him or you will regret it. There was seven people from my class that withdrew due to his horrible teaching skills. Does not care about the students and the essays are pass or fail. If he does not agree with your opinion he will fail you. STAY AWAY..
A horrible teacher. Unclear about what he wants from you, wants you to think along the exact same way he does. Grades ridiculously hard with unfair expectations. I'm a straight A student, and he made it very clear I should be grateful for my B-. For the first time after two years of college I left a course feeling like I learned absolutely nothing.
I like history but not the way he was teaching. Drop this class and enroll in Greenhaw's class. Not very clear and uses Socratic Method of teaching. Essays, quizzes and tests must be exactly what he is looking for. The book is trash too! I dreaded going to this class.
Holy left. Man has strong anti government convictions and will condemn you if you disagree with him. Seems a little childish at times. Behind all that he is a nice guy. Talk to him outside of class. Pretty easy grade if you go his way, don't know otherwise. Interesting class.
Kevin Herlihy is the worst professor in the University of Central Florida. Just read the other comments for details. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS OR ANY OF HIS CLASSES!
Horrible Experience DO NOT TAKE HIM
This Professor is great, as long as you don't mind being belittled in front of the whole class for asking questions. Or having an opinion he doesn't like. And as long as you don't mind his anti-gov't propaganda machine. If you like all those things, then this guy is the professor for you. If you're sane though, avoid him like the plague.
Kevin Herlihy's Irish History class is one of the best jokes I've heard in a long time. This fool spends more time spouting nonsense about the government than he does about his course material, has unreasonable expectations on tests, and berates his students for asking valid questions. Also, the man is a goblin. Avoid at all costs!
This teacher does not deserve to be teaching. Really unrelistic expectations and standards. He belittles you even if he knows he made a mistake. STAY AWAY!
This class is extremely difficult but interesting. If you have an open mind and want to learn something new, take this class. He's off the wall but entertaining at times. He will criticise your comments or questions, but it makes you laugh.
Horrible! do not take! seems to hate his students and USA (gov), lived in Ireland... should go back b/c he seems to hate everything about it here. Belittles his students in front of the class. reads this website; knows how his students perceive him and cares not one bit, proceeds to justify his belittling us. Strait A student, barely making a C.
He's an eccentric man but he really wants you to understand the material. You definately have to read the chapter before lecture and to attend class to do well. He's really easy to approach about any issue you're having and will work with you one on one to try and solve any issues.
Definitely stay away from this guy. SO rude to students. Badgers and embarasses people when it isn't necessary at all. Entire class dislikes him. I also think he makes up a lot of his figures and has anger issues. Asks ridiculous questions that no one knows, and is SURPRISED when no one answers. Crazy nut who needs counseling.
Worst teacher in my four years of college. Retook the class next semester with different teacher got an A. In his class had an F by the middle of semester. If you are closeminded and hate everything american you'll love this guy. I think he was a horrible
He is very outspoken about politics and the state of the world. if you are easily offended i suggest you don't take his class. i found him very intresting. i like the way he teaches. he isn't easy but i wouldn't go as far as to say he was hard. very helpful during office hours.
This class isn't an easy laid back class. There is a lot of homework, but it's to your benefit to do all of it because you are allowed to use your homework and class notes for the quizzes and exams. Dr. Herlihy is intense and lectures quite a bit on current politics. He's a nice person and more than willing to help out after class.
He might not be an easy teacher in terms of his lectures, but he is very willing to help if you have questions. He is very interested in you learning the material and wants you to look outside the box. He gets fed up with stupid questions, if you are an older student with a little more understanding of life he is awsome.
This Class was great. He's a teacher that basically wants to make sure that you actually get something out of the class. If you are willing to put in a lil bit of work for the class take him. One of the best history classes i've taken.
great class- be prepared to READ! you have to to get through it. people bash him but he just wants you to think on your own- if you atleast try/show your trying, you'll get a good grade- great guy, very sweet and helpful- i took him for western civ one and two!
His class isn't easy but it's far from impossible. If you do the work you will get at least a B. Lots of studying and note taking to be done. Tests and quizzes were open-note and fairly simple if you read the text and did the work.
I HOPE HE FREAKIN READS THIS! great guy in his office hrs.in the class if he doesn't know u he will make u look like a freakin dumb gluteus maximus!!!! i know!!!!!!!!! he lives his life by this stuff. open note quizes. if u try he will to
Doesn't let any opinon into the discussion but his own. Doesn't let you answer your questions. Teaches history based on opinion rather than an objective standpoint.
Teaches this class like a grad course. He'll outline the material, and you teach it to yourself. Requires a firm knowledge of Western Civ 1 & 2, Political Science, and Economics. Essays and quizzes are BRUTAL. You either get what he is looking for, or don't. Helpful in his office, but frequent tantrums in class don't make him seem credible.
He is a good person and a good teacher. He makes you incorporate what he teaches with what he assigns in the book. His quizzes are easy taken from the book and his midterms require effort and time to study to do good in them. You have to put effort to be able to get a good grade in the class. Also, attendance is important. He is a good teacher.
He's crazy. He's hard. But I love him. You are forced to learn. He offers a 1/2 of a letter grade for perfect attendance, puts extra credit questions on quizzes, gives all essay questions before midterm and final and they are open note. The catch; He's a ridiculous grader, you have to think for yourself and do more then spit back facts in papers.
Misconstrued as anti-American;actually LOVES America which is evident in how much he has to say about what's wrong with it. Know and follow his directions to the letter, read the chapters' sources carefully to grasp their intent, and don't be a slacker in composing your quiz answers. He's gruff because he CARES about your education and the subject.
Don't take this class if you're a republican, you'll be miserable! He's very loud and intimidating and grades like a beast. You have to do a lot of homework and essays. This is not an easy A class.
He's a liberal socialist. He's alright in some aspects but stay on his good side or he'll slam you. he might just change his rules mid-semester, and he is always right!Grading system is messed up, but he will help you sometimes.
three words. liberal. communist. psychotic. stay away if you can!!!
Funny, smart prof who will engage you to think with your brain and not that of your tv's. He wants your mind to be open to the truth and not lies that the government feeds you. Great prof.
Pysco.! He loves to be a bully in class. Agree with him or he will or you'll be embarrassed, not because your wrong but because he is ALWAYS right! He is very leftist. Claims he's not a conformist, but he has conformed to the radical side. So picky you are afraid to ask questions or think too much for fear you'll go astray and fail. STAY AWAY!!!!!!
Interesting class! Herlihy i sa funny guy and a funnier professor. Goes off on wild tangents.
Prof. Herlihy is passionate about his subject matter and many people may take his passion the wrong way. He is a good teacher who makes you think, analyze and question. It is not an Easy A class, but he is very willing to help you if you need it. Just go to his office hours or speak to him. I would highly recommend you take a class with him!!!
This is not an easy A class I had to work my ass off. The class was somewhat interesting. He makes you think and teaches you how to analyze things on your own. He has his own views and often challenges you to disagree with him but when you do you're left embrassed. You must attend class to pass. Enter at own risk!!!!!!
To be COMPLETELY honest, this teacher is challenging yeah...however, he will open your mind to new levels so you will view the world and history differently. I have learned more from his class than I have any other class before.
*I took both EUH2000 and EUH2001 with Herlihy and I admit it was a challenging course, I got a B because he told me I didn't fully analyze the topic. But I realized that Mr. Herlihy is probably one of the best UCF has to offer. He provokes you to think and see things that this government hides from the general public. Commit yourself and learn.
He was an excellent teacher, just tended to get off topic with random rants on the government. Take his class if you are willing to work!
Challenging, but definitley a good teacher. If you talk to him after class he'll offer great insight into whatever topic you mention. He does get mad, but I don't blame him. I'd be pissed to if I mentioned a certain historical figure in class, and later in the same class, nobody remembered the name. Anybody could get at least a B if their not lazy.
At first I hated his class, but soon saw how much i was learning. He doesn't teach historical facts and dates, its more the reason why history happened the way it did.
Very friendly, easy and goodlooking.
It's not like most Gen. Ed. classes, you actually have to work and attempt to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and it was an enlightening experience. Be prepared to be challenged.
A bit on the crazy side. He does know his stuff, but he will go off on you if you are not thinking how he's thinking. Meh, kinda killed my whole love for history.
If you're willing to work a little harder than in most classes you will do fine. Only two papers the entire semester. If you can get past his Pres. Bush bashing you could learn quite a bit. He forces you to not only read but comprehend, and was always helpful.
Unreasonable.
best prof at ucf
Any student who badmouths Dr.Herlihy is an idiot! Sure he rants sometimes, but if you actually listen, it is tied to the topic somehow. It is nice to have a professor that actually cares enough to get u to comprehend the material. It is tough to find the book, start looking early, I have one to sell!
Really good teacher and not as hard as everyone says. All you have to do is go to class, pay attention, and do the homework and you can easily get an A. He makes you work for it but you learn a lot.
Allright, being in my third year as a history major, I can tell you what this guy teaches is not history. History has to do with events, facts, and the past. This guy talks about the american government, and doesn't realy let students in on the discussions unless they completely say what he wants to hear. It's more of a sociology class.
You need to be a proactive thinker. Dr Herlihy will help you if you come to his office. If you are an eyore (someone who just sits like a lump) you will not like this class. But if you want to be an informed citizen this is the class for you.
Herlihy is by far the best teacher i've had since entering college. He's not an easy going guy, and he seems insane at first, but his class is actaully interesting, and goes way beyond the basic, boring crap that most gen ed classes are full of. take this class
This professor is.....interesting. I myself really enjoy the class, but others do not. The class is hard, but not impossible. The professor really doesn't like being argued with, but he makes extremely valid points that most people need to hear, whether they want to or not. Really will open your eyes, but may piss you off doing it. Good teacher!
Good prof. I def. learned something from the class, very indepth discussions. Extremly opinionated, if you don't agree with him speak up and stand your ground, he appreciates that. I think he tried to test us in discussions, perhaps saying stuff he didn't agree with just to get a rise, so def. voice your opinion. Lots of book work, essays are HARD.
He's a great professor; assignments are tedious but he assigns them to actually make sure that students are doing some type of work related to the class while not in class. He's a self admitted harsh grader of essays, so one does have to be in depth and critical...BUT if you need any help, he'll always find time and he responds to emails speedily.
I can honestly say this guy is one of my fav. teachers. A lot of people tend to dislike him because of his rants on America. But he really gives you a reality check sometimes on the current state of affair. His class was somewhat hard; His tests were all essays. Also weekly short explanation quizes OR a home-type essay.
This guy is like an non-funny Luis Black. He makes some good points but its not worth lisiting to him rant every class. If you can figure out the way he thinks and don't mind a lot of short answer questions every week than the calss isn't that bad, but I dont recemond it.
Seriously, you will either hate this guy or love him for some reason. His tests are all essay so he can grade them based on his freaky scale and add incomprehensible jibberish as the end as notes for improvement. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. You will most definately regret it...unless you don't in which case you'll want to have his baby or something.

This class is easy to do well in, but even easier to do bad in. The class itself is straight-forward, the teacher...notsomuch. He's very liberal and makes this known in every class. Do not disagree with him, or try to bring up any point. I tried to a few times, and I was shot down with him yelling at me. Didn't learn all that much, either.
Although I agreed with his political viewpoints and thought him quite intelligent, he was without a doubt the meanest professor I've ever had. He gives an impossible amount of work and very hard quizzes. He grades harshly too. Drop him asap! I was a Dean's List student and got a D! Made my semester a nightmare! DO NOT TAKE IF YOU VALUE YOUR G.P.A.!
This was one of my favorite classes all semester. He is very liberal, but he brings up some interesting points and it's nice to hear a different perspective on things. He gives you the test and quiz questions ahead of time and is extrememly helpful in office hours.
He can rub people the wrong way, but as long as you stand your ground and aren't an idiot he will like you. Quizzes are hard but his grading system makes up for that. He grades essays harshly but fair. In the end, you will learn a lot. I took him for two classes, Aced both, and would take him again. As long as you can think you will do fine.
Thinks he's profound because of his radical views; it's nothing you haven't heard before. I acknowledge he's a smart guy, but his class is ridiculous. Easily distracted, likes to rant. Teaches an extremely biased view of Western Civ. You must feed into what he wants or suffer, and he treats his class as a major-specific class, not an Gen Ed class.
Knows his stuff for sure. Very liberal and extreme at times, he gets a LOT cooler after withdrawl date. Becomes funny! Do the work, and actually THINK, that's all he wants! Then you'll be fine. Extra credit if you go to every class.
RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
K.H. IS the man! He's a little nuts and likes to rant along with very radical at time-but it was my favorite class this semester! He truly wants you to learn even though he can be a bit harsh-his quizes are everything and the midterm and final-YOU NEED a book! If you love history you'll love his class!
Unless you accept him as your lord and savior, he will hate you. If you challenge his views on anything, he will make you suffer.
He's liberal, and stubborn, intelligent, and very up to date on current events. So if you're gonna try and argue with him, you had better know your stuff. I really enjoyed this class. He rants at least once a day but if you really listen to what he's saying, you can see the method to his madness. If you want to really think, take this class.
He expects a lot out of his students. He just wants you to learn and think for yourself. Most students can't handle his class because they are too stubborn or closed minded. It is a lot of work with weekly quizzes & readings. But his lectures are always interesting and amusing. Don?t take him if you want an easy A?Take him if you want to learn.
Very intense course! There is a ton of work outside of class, but you will learn so much! He comes across as a crazy liberal, but once you choose to stop and listen you'll see that he is just trying to get you to think outside or your world. I am better man for taking his course!
Professor Herlihy is a good professor, but he lets his personality get in the way of letting his students learn in a comfortable environment. When he lectures, he goes off on rants that are almost always negative, and he also seems very full of himself and how his opinion is right and he rudely cuts students off if he is uninterested in them.
His lectures are a bit distracting because of his constant rants of personal opinion and his dissheveled appearance. He also has a very booming voice and brash demeanor that can come across as yelling. He uses the same rants over and over. Very easy to tune out. It feels as though the student serves no purpose during lecture.
Smart and eccentric. Has a "method" for teaching, which consists of a good bit of busywork, in my opinion. I wish he would river dance for the class instead of berate his students.
Professor Herlihy perhaps is the best professor I've ever had. I've been going to school for a long time and there has only been one other professor that grabbed my attention more than he has. Whether he's liberal or not, or likes to rant or not, in the end it doesn't take away from the exceptional professor that he really and truly is. Thank You
He puts a lot of pressure on you, and sometimes it backfires. He will cut you off midsentence if he doesn't agree, and I'd like to see someone actually challenge him on one of his opinions. He sometimes gets off topic, talking about Far Side comics, or Homer Simpson. He expects a lot of prior knowledge. I'm still in his class, & I might withdraw.
AWFUL, JUST AWFUL. i had to withdraw from the class since I got a D on my midterm, and i am SURE he didn not even read my essays, because I have given it to many people to read and they all agree I should have received atleast a B. he is the WORST teachers I have ever had. PLEASE, BELIEVE ME, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
I honestly think this is a cool class. It's tough but students get a lot more out of this class than most others. He seems to be more than willing to help during office hours as well. If you come in with one question, he will ask you the majority of the assignment questions. The toughest part about the class is reading the old English.
Knibb High Football Rules!!
It's a difficult class, it's true, but it's definitely possible for you to get an A. Herlihy expects you to pay attention and to go above and beyond what other professors require. But if you try, you might find you're actually improving as a historian. Granted, he rants a lot, often off topic, but he makes a good point from time to time...
He is VERY passionate about getting his students educated, but unfortunately not about educating them to the material at HAND - more to today's politics. But, he really cares about his students and WILL work with you if you're willing to work with him - in short, if you have the slightest bit of lazy, don't bother, b/c it's going to end badly for y
If you stick it out and really try your damndest it's not THAT hard.It may be hard to force yourself to think hard enough to reach his expectations, but the class is not fundamentally hard if you are willing to put in the time to read & think. You just have to be willing to work at learning, and you will. Oh and he loves this site haha
His class is not impossible He just expects college level work. He knows the material and is willing to help, but expects a college level effort out of his students. If you work full time and are a full time student, it won't be easy, but it is doable. Just make sure you put some effort into understanding the material :-)
A hard challenging class, but not impossible. He's willing to work with you. Many students complain about him but it is only because they are lazy. Don't take this class if you don't want to put forth effort. It is a time intensive class, but I have him again next semester so he can't be that bad.
If you like watching Lost you will love this class! I attended class about 6 times the whole semster and have an A in the class. Textbook use is minimal, I recommend to not even buy the book unless you want to waste your money. He tells the best stories about Scotland or some city like that, I wasn't really listening when he told them.
Even before taking this class I had read on RTM that Prof Herlihy was one to "watch out" for.. I think that was part of my bias going into the class.. By the end of the class I can actually say I enjoyed it, even though it took some effort on my part. Prof H is really a cool guy once you understand him. Give the guy a chance.
Dr. Herlihy makes you think outside the box. He is a great professor! People that don't like him tend to be the ones that come to class late (or don't come at all) and don't enjoy reading. There is alot of work to do, so if you're lazy, don't take his class. If you want a life changing experience (for the better), take his classes. He is amazing.
If you just like sitting in class and taking it all in then this is definitely not the class for you. He takes everyone in his class and makes them participate or embarrases you. He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, but his style I am not fond of. He got in several shouting arguments with kids in my class.
Different. If you don't have at least some interest in the material, it's hard. He'll check to see too, and that makes for some special moments! If you take an interest and think, it's fairly easy to do well and he is definitely willing to work with you! One of the most fulfilling classes I've taken. Lots of writing and book use, though.
Professor Herlihy is one of the best professors I've had in my college experience. He makes you think regularly, which is a welcome change to the monotony of most of my other classes. You definitely have to put in effort, and you need to be willing to work; however, you will be glad that you did. (He gets less intimidating after the withdraw date!)
I was very excited prior to this class. That quickly changed with this easily provoked professor. He requires prior knowledge of the material to be able to supplement the lectures and sparse textbook info. I did learn alot, but as a testimony to the difficulty I'm a "straight-A" engineering student but got my only B in two full years of college.
Don't take his class if you're looking for an easy A even though it isnt that hard to do well. He has a good grading method and offers up alot of exra credit if you dont miss any class. But he personally attacks students and their beliefs in class, and loves to shoot down any argument so just dont say anyhting contrary to him and you'll do fine.
He's a great teacher for those who want to be challenged. He's very articulate in getting his point across, and most of his points are noteworthy. Take him to learn. He will challenge what you think you know about the world, history, government, ideologies and your own priorities.
I never really liked history to begin with, but I always gave it a try. I really did not like his class because he always seemed to include his radical comments. I wouldn't take him only because I tried really hard and I ended up getting a C, it's my first C and only C so far. :(
If you like to be respected as a human being by your professors, DO NOT take Dr. Herlihy. He knows his history, but his bad attitude and rude demeanor make it entirely impossible to enjoy what you're learning. His assignments are fairly easy, but he doesn't give clear instructions on anything, which complicates them. If you can avoid him, do so.
Herlihy is insane. He is always ranting and raving about off topic things that bother him, and he has unrealistic expectations of his students. All he does is ask us questions about things he hasn't taught us yet... and when we don't know the answer he ridicules us in front of everyone. Save yourself the trouble and don't take his class.
Professor Herlihy is the ****ing man. A liberal **** yes, but a pretty smart guy. I love his rants, its nice to hear the bloody truth once in awhile, ugly as it maybe. Take this class if u want to think about the world for a change. Lots of reading but who doesnt need alil more literature in their life. If u study, ul do well. if not, get out
I LOVE KEVIN HERLIHY!!!!!!!!!
He's actually been my favorite teacher in college and his class has been the most memorable. He's very passionate and conducts lively discussions where he will make you think and likely embarrass you. I've never seen him agree with a student, haha. I can see how many think he's a jerk. Lots of writing involved and I can't believe I got an A.
This guy is money! He needs to see you engaged.. If you are someone who slips through the cracks he's not for you. Total anarchist who loves to bash American customs.
Terrible. He goes on rants ALL OF THE TIME. When he's not going on a rant he's being annoying, or playing a boring video. It is very hard to get up and go to this class.
Do not take if you have any sense of cultural identity. Constantly went on rants about how his previous students were better than the ones in his class, constantly hates on the US as a whole and constantly compares us to Europe. Hypocritical in his judgements, his speech sounds like a ****'s, and can't even figure out how to use a D4. Horrid.
Terrible. Always on a rant about the US. Isn't it European History ? Take someone else. He's just plain annoying, ALL THE TIME.
This man will insult you for no reason. And he doesn't pick one person, it's everyone. He got over half the class to withdraw. He has unreasonably high expectations and feels his class is the most important one. I was so looking forward to irish history and he ruined it. I'm an A student - due to my mistake of missing the WD deadline I chose to fail rather than deal with his insensitive air and ****en speech. Don't bother with him you won't be good enough for him.
I will start by saying that he is a extremely smart gentleman but as for his pros thats it. He is a highly opinionated radical that rants about anything. I'm not sure if it is an effort to cause awareness and discussion amongst the class but either way it is irrelevant to the class and most of the time if you try to say something he will yell atyou
Preaches his own socialist agenda for a third of the class, another third is just bashing the United States, and the last third is the actual teaching of the class through his eyes. Attempting to discuss things with him will just get him angry, and make him tell you "not to argue with him". Needs to shut up about his views and teach the subject.
Honestly, I really hated and liked this class all semester. It's definitely not an easy A class, you are gonna be doing work.. so if you want an easy A DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Herlihy is all about his own opinions. The class is pretty entertaining since he makes fun of almost everyone elses opinions. He does make you think which is a plus, and if you
Interesting person. Very opinionated. Ineffective teaching style.
I wish i would of switched out of this class while i still had the chance. He is very obnoxious, and quite frankly, he is extremely rude. He wants you to answer questions, but before you can say your 2nd word he interrupts you and basically says your stupid. He contradicts himself all the time, and won't stop talking about how crappy America is.
Please do not take this class. It is so hard because he wants you to think like he does and he is very rude and i agree with all the negative comments about him. all he talks about is america and how stupid americans are and talks about his hometown country of ireland and how it compares. he never talks about western civ and its such a waste of $..
He has poor teaching skills, is rude, and does not encourage students to think. He goes on irrelavent tangents. He'll bash America in a western Civ class. Which, is compeletly useless. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Quizzes are easy if you read the book chapters which are only 12 pages long or come from the notes most of the time from the previous class. He will most likely disagree with your opinions in a harsh manner but realize he is trying to show you the other side and dont take it as a personal attack.the people who dislike him are too sensitive.
If you want to not be miserable for a semester and if you don't want to think that you're a horrible person for living in America, don't take this man. He will make you cry. A lot.
He really loves to ramble and compare everything to the inadequcaies tat exist in America. Go to class, his notes are important for quizzes. He isn't all that horrible, just loves to make people think outside of their comfort zones and let tem know that his opinions are the right ones. His grading is super strict and keep up with reading.
You have to understand him and what he wants to get a good grade. I agree with most of the other comments said, especially how apparently America sucks. Way to be a patriot...
So easy. Quizzes are from the book and lecture notes and after the first couple you can predict what he will ask. Just walk in humbled and you wont get your head bitten off.
Well, most comments are correct for the most part--he is tough and provocative. He just wants you to think outside the box. He thinks everybody is for the most part ignorant. His insults are somewhat offensive, but i do not recall him calling someone out personally, rather he calls out a group of people...His grading, however, is very generous.
If you are a freshman then you will find him to be quite a shock, but he is a really good Professor. His grading system is generous and he gives a lot of chances for extra credit. If it weren't for his grading system I probably would have failed. Also he is actually really funny if you know how to take a joke.
Great teacher, really knows the material and engages you creatively. If you actually listened to him, his "bashing" of America is simply self-criticism like the Greek's in the course material! His grading system is VERY generous. Take him for a challenge and a great chance to learn. Very helpful personally, regularly visited his office for clarity.
Not a hard class if you do the reading and take notes. Refreshingly and brutally truthful. If you can't take jokes don't bother. If you want a course that educates+makes you think+you're not afraid of basic work, take it. If you're a lazy, complaining, oversensitive idiot don't. EXTREMELY generous grading+extra credit. Links past+present problems.
Herlihy is the best professor I've had at UCF. Yes, you have to do work for his class. God forbid there be work in college. Herlihy isn't a mean person, he gets frustrated sometimes, and rightfully so. He cares about his students and wants us to think for ourselves. Take his class. (P.S. - He does not have a socialist/communist/fascist agenda.)
Awesome professor! Very generous grading system, intelligent & brutally honest. He sounds tough & mean, but he's totally nice. He wants students to be thoughtful, seeing things from different perspectives. Just read the book, take good notes & you're set. Slacking is not a good idea in this class. You'll learn so much, though!
Dr. Herlihy was honestly one of the best professors I have had. He requires much out of his students and you must keep an open mind or else you will be turned off by his harshness. If you can keep your mind open you will realize that Dr. Herlihy cares greatly for his students and his only desire is for you to be an independent thinker.
I couldn't stand this professor. He calls on his students all the time and expects you to know all the answers he is not kind if you are wrong. But I have never learned so much in one semester. He knows his material very well.If you are willing to learn you will pass this class. He expects alot from his students, do all the reading and you will pass.
Worst professor ever. Regularly bashes UCF and the students that attend there. If you do not see things his way, he counts your answer incorrect. Mentions something every class about why UCF is the worst in the nation. Compares everything to "when he taught in IRELAND." All in all... AVOID.
He is a terrible teacher and very very hard to get along with. He's extremely opinionated about everything and isn't afraid to tell you. His midterms and finals are impossible to pass. He grades them like he's grading a master's thesis but limits you on all research. I will never take him as a teacher again. He's impossible to please.
One of the best professors I have ever had, many students like to bash this professor simply because he engages the class in discussion and encourages students to develop independent thought through discussion and writing rather than simply lecture and test. Would highly recommend, this class is NOT difficult so long as you have open ears and mind.
Professor Herlihy is the most influential professor I've ever had. While many students might have trouble, those with good listening, notes, and study habits will pass his class. Quiz every class, which can either save you or kill your grade. Plan ahead by reading. Allows you to exempt final with A in class. Hard class but worth every penny.
Dr Herlihy is a first class Professor, who posseses an astute mind. He is able to provide evidence-based research, which is both factual and empirical to support his statements. If students find his sessions challenging, it is purely because they lack the intellectual vigour to sustain his level of academic ability.
Dr. Herlihy is only difficult if you don't take the time to go to his office hours, and really understand the way he teaches. The whole point of his class is to get you to think for yourself by receiving correct information, remembering it, and understanding it. The sooner you grasp that, the better you'll do!
Don't be afraid or intimidated by his class or what you may have heard. He is an inspiring, informed, and passionate teacher and really stresses you to think about things inside and outside of the classroom. Quizzes are not hard if you read carefully and you can be successful on papers if you go to his office, he is always very helpful!
Great teacher. Causes students to think more actively instead of passively. Read the book & remember the lecture information and you should be fine. Passionate teacher with a ton of information to share, stay open minded to really get what point he is trying to get across.
honestly the most rude and arrogant professor i've ever had. I ended up withdrawing. He's not there to encourage learning and education, he's there to complain about every possible thing, unless he's talking about when he lived overseas. A radical and a socialist. Tells you to have an open mind but discourages any creative thinking.
I was really interested in Irish history before I took this class. DON'T TAKE IT. Maybe in person is better (doubtful) but online all you do is read, read, and then write papers. The book is boring and unclear too! The quizes ask 5 T/F questions about 20 pages of reading, and they are so obscure! Even with notes it is still very hard! DO NOT TAKE!!
Loved this class, though stressful because of the odd point system. 15 quizzes and two papers (with their own quizzes) - you either receive on the quizzes 0, 3, or 5 points. No in between. However, professor will help and answer any and all questions. Plus, if you read the chapters and take notes you should be fine. I was happy with my grade.
He is very passionate about his subject and is very willing to help his students, however; I did not like his class due to his teaching style. I am NOT an auditory learner. He does not vary his lectures to fit different learning styles. His work is not too hard if you READ CH'S TWICE! I was able to pass but not without HOURS of studying!
A Brilliant man, with a burning passion for his subject. however, if you are taking this class simply because you must, refrain from this professor. but if you plan on pursuing a career in any history field, by all means, sign up with him to get the most out of your time.
Without a doubt the worst class set up I've ever seen. 16 quizzes, 5 questions, true or false. Essay assignments are so vague and poorly worded it's impossible to take this class online without contact with the professor. Unless you are in love with Ireland don't bother; it's needlessly boring, poorly structured, and the professor is not nice.
He is very passionate about what he does, but he doesn't care about his students, at times even talking down to them, and is very difficult to understand. His quizzes are irrelevant to the notes. Avoid at all costs.
Don't take it. You've been warned. He's hard of hearing, so he yells constantly. He's not very open minded and you have to think his way in order to do well. His quizzes are irrelevant to the book and his lectures, so good luck if you take this class but I suggest you don't.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. DO NOT take this class. His quizzes are unclear and very vague. Waste of money and time. Dont bother taking the time to do the midterm essays because you will get an F anyway. He also loves to bully his students and has no problem calling you out in front of 300 students.
WORST TEACHER EVER! Do not take this class I am a great student always have been but he is terrible you have to read so much and then take a 5 question t/f quiz that is vague and his essays he expects way too much for a gen ed class if you love history thats one thing but if you just need the gen ed or history credit i would avoid at all costs
PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He is the WORST professor I have ever had. There is a quiz EVERY DAY, which makes attendance mandatory. I am a good student, but I have a low D in the class. He doesn't teach well, the quizzes have no relevance to anything, and he is even down right rude to students.
I'm a straight A student and I can't believe I have a C in this class. This man is mean to students who don't make his class the ultimate priority. You will fail the midterm if you don't go to his office hours, and you will not get higher than a C if you're not an amazing writer. Didn't know there were professors this terrible.
He actually reads these reviews and scoffs at them which is odd because these strongly indicate that his teaching style does not accommodate everyone in his class. Having a PhD does not mean you're a good teacher. If he was actually friendly and reasonable, then maybe people would get good grades and understand him more.
I am a History major so this subject is obviously one of my favorites but he actually ruined it for me. I dreaded going to his class because he is so negative and rude to his students. He doesn't encourage students to do better at all, only remarks about how stupid students are when he should be helping them understand and fix their mistakes.
He doesn't teach the material properly and doesn't make an effort to help you at all. He talks down to everyone in the class, like we are inconveniencing him simply by existing. He doesn't use webcourses or blackboard. One of his midterm essays was on a topic literally never discussed in class. To be fair, he has a good curving policy
His class is not that bad. I took it my freshman year and received an A and was exempt from the final. You have to go to class, read, and work hard. If you're not willing to do that then you shouldn't be going to college.
While Dr. Herlihy is a very intellectual person, he is a below average instructor. I believe UCF needs to do a full evaluation of him because it seems like he would rather be doing anything else in the world than teach us. Students in the upper level history courses deserve to get their money's worth from the instructors that work for us. Avoid!
Dr. Herlihy is a very knowledgeable man. He has a noble goal of provoking his students to think for themselves and at a higher level. He can be nice at times when you visit him in his office. He is very peevish, to the point where students may think that he doesn't care about them. It's upsetting that his bitterness overshadows his intelligence.
He was a horrible teacher and so rude! No one should take this class unless you want to be yelled at and receive a F.
Dr. Herlihy is very helpful and nice. The class was not easy. There were 2 quizzes a week and two papers in total. I love writing papers but I did not do well on them. His class requires a lot of dedication but I learned a lot of interesting things about Ireland and he was always fair and responsive. I made a hard earned A.
i would only recommend professor herlihy if youre really interested in history and are willing to put in a lot of effort into passing his class. he can be mean but his intentions are good and is actually very nice in his office hours
A very difficult class BUT if you ace all of your quizzes you can still get an A even if you write mediocre papers....and you will as his standards are very high. If you are a champ at Bloom's taxonomy, you will do well. Also, make sure you also have an interest in Christianity as a historical subject; it's a pretty big theme in this class.
This teacher is very inconsiderate and rude to his students. I was always so petrified to come to class. I tried so hard every night while reading and still in the end only received a C. His essays are so hard and confusing. The amount of tears I have cried over this class is ridiculous! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR THIS TEACHER!
This was without a doubt THE WORSE professor I have taken at UCF. He's rude, unclear, and shows very little desire to teach students. Don't bother asking him for help, he just rambles on about how he hates America and education. I passed the class but it was still the worst desicion I have ever made. AVOID!
Worse teacher I've ever had. First class I've ever failed. I'm extremely surprised he's allowed to teach.
He is very rude. He expects everyone to answer his questions within .3 seconds of him asking. He wasn't very clear when it came to his lectures. He wanted his midterm essays and final to be written just from the book and notes but did not give enough info to fulfill the essays. He also doesn't answer questions clearly. Worst class i've ever taken.
After taking multiple graduate level history classes and receiving nothing but A's, this professor told me I had the reading comprehension of a teenager. He tries to use big words to condescend to students, but he uses them wrong, which is ironic. His "syllabus" was outdated and made no sense. He is an arrogant and terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE!!
Very knowledgeable on Irish history but wasn't very clear when it came to what is required on the two papers. If you communicate with him and are respectful to him I found he is helpful and would be respectful back. Grading style is unforgiven but is doable as long as you read all the required and provided reading material.
I have a love for history and this man shut it off. His lectures are unclear, which makes the midterm essays and finals extremely difficult, as he only wants you to use the book and lecture notes. Above all his abrasive manner makes students not want to interact in class, which he interprets as stupidity. Very unwise decision to take him.
Would not recommend taking this Professor. Had a real interest in the subject matter, still do but will wait and see if UCF invest in a new Professor before taking Modern Irish History, otherwise plan on staying or will look elsewhere to take the class.
Yes, the class is difficult, but this is college so it should be. I found Professor Herlihy to be very intelligent and helpful, and would recommend if you are truly interested in learning the subject matter. I could have done without the occasional yelling at a student but beside that I really enjoyed the class.
I was interested in the subject before hand, however, he has made sure I am any longer. Quizzes are easy enough, you read the material, you take the quiz. The papers are a different story. Not sure if he thinks we are graduate students or not, but his paper are unrealistic. Also his manner with students is atrocious! My first and last class him him
I have taken many hard professors. This professor is not hard. He is just bad. All the quizzes are True/false and subjective at best. And the papers are given with a false theme that he changes as he grades them. I got a 98% in Cassanello's History and Historians and that class was way "harder". Herlihy is just a poor instructor. Don't Take.
Dr. Herlihy is a very smart man. However, being smart does not make you a good person or a great instructor. I do understand his frustration with students who do not try, but his constant angry outbursts only hurt those of us who do. I understand he expects a lot out of college students, but he holds everyone to a standard that is not always realis
I have never been more appalled by a teacher in my life. He spent the majority of our 75 minute class period discussing his opinions about the American education system (which were all overwhelmingly negative) and screaming at the students who hoped to learn. It took him four classes to actually discuss relevant material. DO NOT TAKE.
Coursework is extensive at times but not overbearing. Paper topic was unclear at best, at times quizzes seemed subjective. His grade scheme for the class is unnecessarily complicated, you have to keep up with this class, one misstep and you fail.
He can be very picky about what he wants, but also gives a LOT of extra-credit opportunities every day in class. Make sure to do well on his one-minute short answer quizzes, and don't forget online quizzes. If you do, that could prevent you from being exempt from the final.
Extremely specific with what he wants. Highly opinionated and loud. I had to withdraw. Class starts off easy then picks up. Fail 5 quizzes you fail class. 1 minute essay every class.
Worst class I have ever taken. Professor doesn't keep up with the class. Content is lackluster. If you tried to message him, some of his responses were sarcastic like he is the God of Ireland. Stay. Away.
This is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. He is often negative and rarely has a nice thing to say in class. He expects perfection, so it basically ends up becoming a passfail class. There are so many ways to fail this class and very few ways to pass. I dreaded going to this class every day and the anxiety I got was so not worth it.
Everyone wants to hate on him. Yes he is in your face & likes things his way but by the end of the semester you will learn so much more than what he just teaches. If you come with an open mind, simply do as he asks, & participate you won't have a hard time at all. He is always there to help
Probably one of the better professors here in UCF. He is harsh, but fair. To be frank, the class is not hard to pass, unless you are catatonic. Just put some effort in the class, he's really not asking for much.
A one minute quiz at the beginning of every class.. Online reading quizzes (5 questions) The textbook is essential. Herlihy is not an easy-A professor. He could be abrupt and seem condescending at times. However, his lectures are well detailed . He uses the lectures to connect with today's times. Not recommended for the easily offended or slackers
Herlihy was a good professor. He expects students to think... A lot. If you want a more traditional class where you learn history and regurgitate facts with some analysis, don't take his class. If you care more about general understanding with an overemphasis on analysis, his class is something to consider.
This class sucks during the summer and online. it just sucks honestly. There are quizzes every week and you have 2 papers. The quizzes are rough because he only asks 5 questions out of alott reading and they are difficult to understand because they were in old english. Then again this class isnt my cup of tea so that might be it.
Confusing grading scale and many students found the assigned papers confusing. Lots of reading, quizzes are hard. Good news is that if you ask for help and guidance, he will provide it. I did very poorly on the first paper but worked with him and did much better on the second. He rewards effort and improvement, but you will work for your grade.
You have to pay attention and make a generous effort. I received a 69 on my midterm paper, but all the answers to the quiz questions are on the online textbook website, all you have to do is take the quiz on there to get the answers and just reference them while taking the reading quizzes on myucf.
He was the worst professor I have ever had in my life. He was arrogant, rude, and condescending. I tried to go to his office hours to get help and he refused to help me until I admitted my ignorance. I ended up dropping the class because it wasn't worth being bullied.
Honestly, worse professor I've had, not because the class is hard, but because I expect to go into class and learn, not learn about how horrible America/American's are. His quizzes are only T/F, which is fine at first, but then you quickly realize that the stuff he asks has very little to do with the chapter. I was looking forward to this class too
After reading the rest of the reviews I see nothing has changed. He is rude and unhelpful, he may imply he is going to help you and give you a chance but do not believe him. He will make it point to let you all know how stupid you are at the beginning of the term and then proceed to tell you over and over for the rest of the semester.
I went into this online class hoping I would learn a lot about Irish history, but this wasn't the case. He gives out T/F quizzes (w/ a weird grading scale) every week on 30 page readings that are difficult to understand. For the final, he assigns an essay with very contradicting guidelines (and you need the textbook, which he doesn't state).
This guy is the real deal. All he really wants you to do is to be aware and think for yourself. With that being said he can be a little over the edge in lectures but if you really read the chapters and your notes you should be straight. His office hours were sometimes helpful and other times he would just talk about issues in the world! Good guy
Grading scale is set up with more confusion than necessary. class is set up with very low interaction. I did not need to buy a text book for his Medieval Ireland class, so that is the only thing worth being positive about.
He's a good professor. Actually makes you think for more than 5 seconds. Also, think before you say something in class. If he counteracts your argument it's not because he hates you, he wants you to think things through. Give some effort, provide some insight and you'll do just fine. Or don't, whatever.
Best example of a guy phoning it in for pay I've ever seen. Classmates asked if we even had a teacher; none of us heard from him until he emailed everyone mid-term to say if you were below a certain score get out, you won't pass. If you're a self-motivator and don't need directions or answers to your questions then go for it. Otherwise avoid him.
Spent the whole semester berating us for being stupid. All tests were P/F even with multiple questions/answers. Asked questions he had not given us the info for yet and got angry we didn't know it. I remember him imitating Eeyore and playing clips of Borat to criticize America. Invited me to office hours then told me to go away when I arrived. 2x.
Only took this w/ him cause he was the only prof. Hated his F2F class, thought online would be okay. Just as rude online. Grade hinged on 2 essays. Whenever I asked a Q, he told me if I ever actually looked at the content I'd find it, instead of helping me. Confusing grading. Little-to-no feedback or interaction or assistance. Never again.
