Dr. Lam is very patient and understanding whenever I approached him with questions. He does make you think, which I know will better prepare me for the higher division courses. Snappy dresser!

Kevin's passion and interest in biology is very apparent and contagious. It is always a pleasure attending his lectures. The course and his new 'flipped classroom" approach is challenging, demanding, but may also be questionable at points. He is helpful, but continuiously makes mistakes regarding homework postings on canvas and via email.

he's super funny and interesting! his lectures are fun and interactive. but I feel his quizzes and the problems he gives are quite hard. sometimes I even feel like I've never learned that. overall great prof, just make the exams easier plz.

Kevin's a fantastic prof! He really cares about everyone in his class and wants you to do well. He takes emails anytime and will always meet with you outside of office hours if you want. The flipped classroom is challenging but it works. You will really understand the material if you just put in the work.

Kevin was an amazing prof. Very helpful and clear when explaining topic ... always made lectures interesting. Although he didnt always explain the most difficult topics in lecture and readings each week were very pretty much essential, as long as you prepare for exams using the SLOS he gives you there arent any surprises.

Always willing to go out of his way to answer your questions. This course is content heavy and that's not Kevin's fault. If you do the readings, the homework, and go to class, there's no reason why you should find it difficult. True, there are no answers posted for practice Q's, but that's why you need to go office hours.

Despite my poor grade he is a great professor. I didn't put enough work into the course as Biology doesn't really interest me. If you like Biology, you're diligent, and you have Kevin as a prof, you will surely succeed. Do all of the weekly questions, including the practice final questions. Also, make sure you go to office hours.

Course was pretty heavy.. but Kevin did an awesome job teaching it. Some concepts were kind of difficult to understand, but he spent a lot of time in lecture making the topic interesting and easy to understand. As long as you do the pre-readings, quizzes, and attend lecture you should be fine :)

Probably one of the best profs you could get at sfu. He is lively, clear and really works hard to make his lectures as interactive as possible. He goes to the point of even memorizing his students names. :D The grade I received was due to the course content and my work habits.

Kevin Lam was my lab supervisor and was incredibly helpful during my tough first semester taking BISC101. He is very kind and patient with questions so do not hesitate! He even makes youtube videos to help students understand difficult concepts! He really cares if students understand content, and as a guy, I still have to say that he's hot O_O

Honestly one of the best profs in the biology department. He was my lab instructor for 102, but has covered lab for my 101 section as well. Great sense of humour haha. Definely recommend taking a course with him!!

Kevin was only my lab instructor but honestly what a guy. I really appreciate how he focuses on the understanding of content rather than memorizing facts because this really helps in the long run. The labs for this class has no where near the amount of detail as the lectures, but it really puts content into perspective. Quality over quantity! :)

Kevin is my lab instructor this semester and he is incredibly kind. You can tell that he genuinely wants his students to succeed. I was surprised when he actually managed to remember all of his students' names within several days. I hear he is a prof as well and I expect he's just as good as a prof as he is a lab instructor. Kevin is an awesome guy who really cares about his students. awesome lectures with a fun environment. Not sure why everyone is giving him a poor rating, yes his tests are pretty hard but he teaches you all the tools you need, you just need to know how to apply them instead of doing the regular rehashed practice problems like other classes.

Many people saying that they weren't tested on the stuff in the lecture notes... That's because this course was a problem solving course, not a memorize fest like regular courses. You have to apply what you learned and think about each problem, and Kevin gave the tools necessary to do so. Great prof, would HIGHLY recommend this course and prof!

Exams are ridiculously hard. If you aren't prepared to work, don't take his class. The amount of work required to normally get you a B would get you a C- or D in his class. Material on his exams are much more advanced than the ones shown in lectures,tutorials and homework. Kevin is the kindest prof I've ever had but he is also by far the toughest.

I dont know what everyone's talking about. Amazing professor. The only proff at SFU that actually teach you something. Accessible outside class. If you solve the problems at the end of textbook, youll get a great mark cause he teaches you everything that you need. I absolutely recommend him.

Its a hard course. Much harder than the first year biology courses. Kevin's exams and problem sets are hard and hes a very tough marker. Ive never worked so hard for a C in my life.. Also, hes probably the nicest guy Ive ever met.

Kevin Lam is by far one of the best profs in Simon Fraser U, and this course is reflective of his skills as an instructor. He's a tough grader, and tons of work is involved (the most I've ever had)-- but the lab allows for exciting research exposure very rarely offered to newer students and is sure to peak the interest of Science-lovers.

He and his TA marked harder than profs marked me for 4th year courses and I felt that the research potential and materials available to use was not very interesting (but since the point of the course was for 1st/2nd years there's not much that can be done). Kev was insanely dedicated to his job and went out of his way to help. TA could be better.

Kevin is an overall great professor! We didnt have to pay for the textbook, which was GREAT and it is obvious that Kevin wants all students to succeed. I personally wasnt a huge fan of the flipped classroom teaching style or the extra videos we had to watch every week. This is a pretty hard class that requires dedication and a lot of review!

You can really tell how much work he puts into the course and he really does care for his students. Gives VERY detailed answer keys to midterms so you know what to improve on, same with the practice midterms. You get a lot of freebie marks from clickers and online bonus quiz marks. You do have to do some prelec work but not too bad. Great prof!

Not bad but not incredible. He gives super detailed lecture slides and some of it doesn't appear on tests. I don't know why I bothered to go to his lectures, the notes were all given online. He seems really into teaching though and excited about biology, and he is really kind and caring about his students.

Kevin is an amazing prof. I've had him for both Bisc 202 and Bisc 212/272. He is always available for help with anything you need, even if it isn't course related. He pushes you to think outside of the box and to your best potential. When it comes to research he will help you every step of the way and is very enthusiastic about your ideas!

I love Kevin. He is by far the best prof that I have ever taken a class with. He's caring and aware students take other classes (as most profs don't). He breaks down difficult concepts into small understandable steps, sometimes finishing lectures in videos, but it is worth it. Take the time to actually understand and not memorize and it's easy!

I had Kevin as my lab instructor. He was so good. Favourite instructor I've ever had. He did a couple lectures when our prof was away, and he was great at explaining everything. In lab, he made sure to learn EVERY person's name (in a class with hundreds) because he cares that much. He was eager to help and overall is just a wonderful human being.

Difficult tests but only because he tests your understanding, not how well you memorized things. Gives great advice at the beginning of each lecture. Gives out previous terms' midterms that have very detailed solutions with the grading criteria.

The dude is the most goated prof at SFU. Gives a lot of advice, practices, and overall really good as a prof. If I didn't get a good grade, I gotta blame it on myself at the end cuz there were opportunities to get prepared. But you gotta learn from your mistakes instead of regretting them.

I've never met a prof like Kevin during my semesters at SFU. He really wants his students to succeed and provides them with many resources to do so. He will answer any questions you have and he's probably one of the nicest people I've met. The difficulty isn't anything crazy and his tests are very fair. You need to put in the work for a good grade.

Professor Lam genuinely wants his students to do well. Gives lots of exam practice (study the practice answer keys! you have to know how to phrase your answers correctly otherwise you will lose easy marks), has daily office hours leading up to tests. Don't fall behind, do practice qs, watch office hour recordings if you can. Take this class w/ him!

As the rating suggests, he is a "real gem". He is always there for his students and offers tons of bonus points for literally everything! This class is similar to math as there is much more application than memorization, so you have to practice regularly, however, he provides many resources and makes himself available even after his office hours!

Prof Kevin is a real gem. He makes you work for your grade, but nevertheless everything you learn is relevant, interesting, and applicable. There are lots of lecture videos/prelecture videos, as well as post practice questions, but these will help you to better understand the concepts. Stay on track! If you fall behind, it'll show. Def worth it!

Amazing! 1st time he taught 410. His lectures are interactive which is great practice for your brain lol. Really teaches you about scientific research & TA also taught us about anti colonialism. Lectures are sometimes heavy & exams can be tough since you need to defend your answer well but practice and go to his many office hours!! He's the best :)

Kevin is a really amazing professor. Midterm was not too hard, the final required using a lot more detailed thinking than he went into in lectures. His section vs plants for the final (diff prof) was ABSURD the difference in difficulty, his being way more critical and complicated, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

During the semester a student reached out to him saying how difficult this semester has been for them and Kevin sent out a 2000 word email to the entire class saying "you matter don't worry you can get through this". Literally the best lecture notes I had ever seen. You don't have to take notes and just focus on listening. Video lectures are also of good quality. Very caring and accessible. Graded only by one midterm and final (in lecture portion) so no homework except bonus quizzes, which are based on participation. Literally by ideal prof.

He records office hour questions and uploads it with time stamps of the answers. He gives you past tests to practice on so you know what to expect. 5.1/5 on RMP seems like a error. Trust me, it is not.

Makes you think about HOW to actually solve problems step by step and applying it into the real world. Amazing amount of practice exams, make sure to always practice on your speed and accuracy. Write ALL you can answer as his exams are graded to the down 0.25 mark, which shows your skill level and how well you managed to capture the topics.

I LOVE KEVIN LAM. He gave such thorough and SO MUCH practice material I wouldn't be able to get through all of it even if I tried. I especially appreciated that he uploaded all his pre-lectures, lectures, and participation quizzes because I hate going to class (it was an 8:30) and I could just catch up on my own time. The midterms were fairly easy

He really wants his students to do well. He provides practice exam questions for each unit, and posts an answer key on how he would want you to answer. The only issue is i find his slides too messy and overloaded with paragraphs. His midterm was difficult but fair. He provided personal phone number and would give us advice on how to do well.

The course has a lot of content, but he explained every concept fully and was very clear about what he expected from us on exams. He posted lots of study resources, notes, and practice questions.

i cannot describe the respect i have for this prof. he is so kind and obviously cares about his students mental health and is still able to teach us what is needed. he's quite fair with marking and even if you're doing bad he will help out a lot, literally pages of advice on his sample exams! all profs should learn from him.

Had Kevin as a lab prof for Bisc 102. The labs were really fun with Kevin, and if we got tired as he was explaining, he would ask the class if we needed a break which was really sweet. He also was very understanding and engaged with all of us! Labs were easy, and the lab final was easy because of him. Would 1000% recommend!

Incredible professor. One of the best professors to have during first year. Always open to talking with students and cared deeply about their wellbeing and success.

Great professor, super nice and attentive with all of his students. Highly recommend. Beware of his exams though! They're not that difficult if you study with all the exam mocks and exercises he provides, so use them all!

Dr. Lam is the best prof hands down. He explains concepts from the student's perspective, making them easy to grasp, from the pre-lecture videos to office hour notes, his effort in teaching is really amazing. It was surprising to see a professor that genuinely cares about their students and their success. I rlly recommend taking a course with him!

idk what to say other than hes great. Makes it so you dont have to buy iclicker. Provided a lot of resources for the midterm but not as much for the final.

Although I got a horrible grade in the course, I still respected Kevin's teaching as he's there to TEACH and maximize our learning. He uses research-based teaching and incorporates SEL into our lectures. Made us feel welcomed into the class and was super approachable. Study hard using his materials!

He is an amazing professor and really cares about his students. He provides soooo much practice material, and the secret to doing well is to use most of it. Exams will include 1 or 2 questions that you haven't seen before so be prepared to study concepts on a deeper level to answer those questions too. In class questions are very helpful too.

Professor Lam is incredibly helpful and dedicated to student success. His lectures are well-structured, and the practice materials are invaluable. For exam prep, I found ChatGPT and unstuck study to be super useful alongside the provided resources.

I had him for my lab prof and he was so nice, caring and understanding I genuinely had such a great time that I looked forward to his classes. My friend had him as a lecture prof and said similar things about him. Very kind and understanding.

Kevin was the best prof I ever had at sfu. He is so organized and outlines exactly what you need to know. He is truly a great teacher, i've never understood material so well. His exams are harder but he sets you up well for them giving TONS of his old exams so you know what to expect.
