definitely knows his stuff, interesting material, love the accent
No Comments
Good prof. Knows his stuff, makes it interesting. Hard m/c tests. Final grade consisted of 2 m/c tests each 50 questions worth 50% each.
-hard to understand, jumped around a lot, never take Soci 325 and 399 in same semester, he gives massive amounts of pointless reading and if these are options for you they are definately not worth it - over all not a good prof
I think he is good
Really took an interesting area and made it completely boring. Don't take this class if you don't like a ton of pointless readings... and a bunch of it is stuff that he wrote himself. This guy is on a power trip.
A LOT of pointless readings that he wrote himself that are basically the exact same, and honestly have identical paragraphs in each. I thought it was interesting though...but defeniatly not easy... two 50% m/c tests
Interesting subject matter, made me think about sports affairs in the world from a new perspective. Tests were hard. He has a great accent and is good looking.
Very good at lecturing, keeps it interesting with great examples. 2 m/c tests, not hard if you put in the time to study. Overall, an awsome prof!
Awesome lectures, always interesting and relates to current events. Lots of reading to do, though, so don't fall behind, and testing is only 2 m/c exams, which aren't easy, but lessens the work load. Good prof, nice guy.
Had him for 325, and 399. Found him to be fairly interesting, yet dry at times. There was a lot of readings, and his exams were difficult, but at the same time I learned a lot.
He's passionate about what he teaches. Studied sport from an interesting perspective. ALOT of readings though, and only 2 (50% each) exams during the whole sememster. Cute accent though!
He's funny. Keeps you engaged. Two tests, both worth 50%, but when you have as long to study for those two tests as we do, it shouldn't be too difficult. Overall, he's a fantastic prof, I recommend him to all, and will continue to take his classes.
wow. don't ever take a 400 level class with this man. he will remind you of it daily. i really feel that he holds this arrogance about him. i wish i wasn't scared to speak up in his class for fear of him making me look like a fool.
Graded 2x50% M/C tests. One is done in 50 min. Final is done in 2-3 hours. How is that fair? Questions were geared towards memorization over applying theory. Tells us not to take notes, yet his online notes are nothing like his class notes. Was gone many classes and replaced by a video. Never again.
A good Prof but definately has a bit of arrogance!!!! If you take a 400 level with him be prepared for him to minimize his role in the class and to be taught by other students doing presentations instead! I will give him this though, he wears a pair of jeans very well.
Bad, bad, bad exams! Irrelevant, and repetitive questions... goes on and on about subjects that have little to do with the material. I really did not enjoy this class, and left feeling like my two weeks of intense prep for the final didn’t pay off at all. It’s basically hit and miss.
Not an easy class, but why would it be? Assignments were challenging but there was room for creativity. He's good for providing useful feedback. If you're looking for someone to hold your hand, he's not the prof for you and maybe a university isn't the right place for you.
This is my favourite prof at the U. He's awesome. Great teaching methods, super clear, lots of reading, but that's what happens in Crim. Funny and keeps your attention. Really makes an effort to get to know his students. Would definately recommend!
In response to the person who "intensely" studied for 2 weeks, I was able to easily decipher what would be on the test, as such, i got a 95%. it is YOUR fault you did poorly on the test because you didnt study the right stuff. so people, disregard that comment made .
eloquent speaker. uses examples in tandem to hammer points home. not too many notes, but plenty of readings. the textbooks are simple to understand and easy to remember -- invest the time to do all readings. don't be afraid of the 50% exams -- they're not as bad as you'd think. remember that an A is an 85. he's also quite the good lookin' fella :)
I really enjoyed this class, although it could be dull at times. 2 multiple choice exams which were failry straight-forward if one did the readings and attended class. His grading scale in this class made it easy to get an A (I'm not being arrogant, marks in the mid-80's earned an A)
Professor Young is pretty much the example master. Tons of examples, and he takes the time to explain how the theories all tie into each other... aka hammers the point home repeatedly. Attend class, do the readings, and you'll be good. Downside - this professors spends a lot of time explaining what he's going to explain in class. Confusing? Exactly
I thought he was a boring person teaching boring material. The biggest pain was having to go to class to watch the crappy movies and listen to the crappy lectures because you knew he would put that stuff on the crappy exams. I rate this class crappy out of crappy.
Very entertaining and has a vast amount of knowledge in the subject. Easy to look at too!
HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! Interesting classes and lectures. Eloquent speaker. Very knowledgable, I will definitely take more of his classes. Best of all, in a class of 300 he actually took the time after class to congratulate those who did well on his exam. Great Teacher
PPL who dont get A/A- in his class r stupid. His notes r like 20 pages for each 50%midterm and u just have to read the book on wutever he teaches u on the notes and ur guaranteed A-. I read the book twice and got A.(the boox arent dry atall, v. intersting to read so thas y i had no problem reading it twice)
Worst Prof EVER! Not only does he complicate his lectures with useless analogies and pointless examples coupled with his totally ridiculous accent, his disproportionatly weighted exams fail to make a connection between the text and his babblings... Overall, an over rated Prof who would make a better used car salesman than an apparent "Doctor"
Turned the Sociology of violence into the Sociology of violence in sport. No exams, but the final paper is worth 50%. Practically never used my $100 course pack. And I find that he's better in smaller doses, as he regularly crosses the line between confidence and arrogance which becomes overwhelming during a 3 hour class.
Really good prof. Very funny and engaging. The lectures were really entertaining. If you're interested in sociology of sport and actually listen to what he says in lecture, you'll do fine in this class. Read the texts, too- they're easy reading.
Professor Young makes the class as interesting as possible with lots of quirky sports related stories that generally DO tie into exams. Go to class, pay attention to what he says, and DO THE READINGS before tests. Great guy, good class, and a little bit of Austin Powers crashing in on midterm time.
Most intensely awesome professor around
In my 5 long years at the uni, he stands out at #1, hands down. Extremely intelligent, helpful, great guy... and v. cute (hey, it doesn't hurt!)
One of the best profs out there - and he's a cutie ;) If you get the chance, take his classes. They are hard, but very rewarding and he is a very fair prof.
Very funny professor. Engages the class with material, and the class itself is actually very interesting. Can be a bit pompous at times. The course is challenging, but if you read the book and attend the lectures, you will see he's a great prof and teaches a good class.
Soci of sport... very interesting and engaging, enjoyed lectures a lot. If you go to class, listen, and read the text you can do just fine. Also one of the better looking profs... but it doesnt take much at UofC to be a "better looking prof!". anyways... good to look at, good to listen to. highly recommend.
Soci of deviance was so easy with him, lots and lots of reading but just memorize the notes and retain what you read and you will do fine. You sometimse have no idea what he is talking about and can also contradict the readings but just go to class take detailed notes and keep up on the reading
By far one of my favorite profs. Just attend class and keep up with the readings and you will do great!
Ridiculously hot professor, thats all I have to say. ;)
Interesting class but readings are crucial to passing this class (it's a lot of reading).Time was not used effectively at times to cover things (explains what he plans to do in class).tests are difficult & doesn't use Ppt. notes. Not the best professor =(
Gives you a whole new perspective on the world of sport. Dr. Young is a great lecturer, but it may take a couple classes to get used to his teaching style. You must do textbook readings to do well on the exams and they take a lot of time but his marking scale makes it easier to do well, 85-94 is an A.
Great class. Reading were extensive and lengthy but very useful. Young makes you interested in the material and has some very interesting and entertaining guest speakers.
Do not take this class unless you plan to write down every word that comes out of his mouth because he does not write notes. His exam is extremely hard and you are expected to read about 500 pages for the 1st midterm.
Although he is a very "hot" professor with a British accent that does not makeup for his teaching! He reads directly off his overheads and he says not to worry about the midterm worth 50% of your mark but then it ends up being so hard. He said the class average was a C and that was a good mark! Good mark for who? Not for 2nd or 3rd years taking thi
He's completely full of himself, thinks he's funny but its just painful. Also introduced using one of his own texts which had almost nothing to do with the class, cost like $70. Don't really need to go to the lectures, he goes about 90% off the text, goes into detail. Also I got an A in the class and he refused to give me an academic reference.
Lets call a spade a spade, the guys a jerk. He's condescending and really tough to listen to because he's so self infatuated. With so many options in soci profs avoid this one.
I actually did not mind him. He's a bit condescending and arrogant at times, but some of the info we learned was pretty interesting. The readings seem long and terrible (and some were), but others were very interesting. The 2nd test was tricky.. but final exam took 40 mins and was easy.. good way to end the year. I would take another class with him
If you like sports you'll LOVE this class, otherwise avoid it. Teaching style is different (all presentations) but enjoyable. The readings can be a bit dry and he focuses a lot on his own work (it was the topic for the final paper!) but it's good overall. He's not that mean, just insensitive at times so toughen up; but he can be very nice.
I loved Dr.Young's classes. I took 325 and 399 with him. He was very clear and concise and I learned alot in both his classes. He is a little full of himself but I think he has reason to be. His hotness made classes a little distracting, but...yum. He is also very funny with a cute accent.
Dr Young... I think he's jaded. I heard he used to be an amazing prof. this semester, he doesn't seem to really care at all. a little obnoxious, uses a textbook that he wrote but doesnt even cover in class (clearly makes it mandatory so he could get the money from the purchases). speaks way too quickly in class so it's hard to keep up with him.
Dr. Young is quite good looking, not gonna lie. His tests are quite hard, and very book question heavy. You cannot half ass it through this class. Class attendance is a MUST or you will fail. I actually do not find him very self inflated besides having to use his book. As a bonus he is often pretty funny!
I took 399 with him & he seemed much more enthusiastic. 325 had two 50% MC tests, an entire section removed from lecture, the same notes/examples for parts of 325 & 399 and lots of cancelled classes! Seems like he really didn't care about anything but his trip to Mexico! Makes me wonder why i paid 500$.. Still, easy A if you do the work!
TERRIBLE: constantly changing schedule and assignments, cancelled classes, little use of $130 coursepack, his weekly improvisations of what is going to happen next and no taking account of students' needs, constant use of his own articles&discussions about sports, little teaching but many presentations, arrogance and rudeness, favoritism
His class was interesting, but I found it extremely difficult to keep track of so many concepts at once when each test is worth 50%. He goes through lecture material fast. The book he wrote that he makes you buy is difficult to read and semi unrelated to course material.
Very knowledgeable about what he is teaching. Often goes fast but if you used a laptop, it's not hard to keep up and take down important points. Concepts are straight forward. Midterm and Final exam was fair. Textbooks mandatory
If you care about your marks...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS..NOT with him anyways. I'm not kidding..there's just a LITTLE less than 500 pages of textbook material you need to know. You'd THINK he'd talk a LOT about the textbook..but no. You actually needa READ the textbook cause 45% of your midterm is based on the book. One word: A.V.O.I.D
I really enjoyed this class with him. Personally, I liked that there were only two tests 50% each because there's time for you two put in study time. READ the chapters assigned. You will do fine if you put in the time.
A TERRIBLE SOCIOLOGY PROFESSOR. He strives to give his students low marks (kid you not) If you want a C, take this class. He is completely unfair in his marking strategies and expects you to remind every minuscule detail from readings. O and he makes you buy the text book HE WROTE for the class even though it is completely irrelevant to the course
such a useless proff
No idea what people are complaining about, his grading methods were fair and he expressly described them in painstaking detail on day one. Two 50% exams, multiple choice, not a hard grade if you read the readings and attend most of the lectures. Only suggestion would be that the TA should be more involved, hard with MC exams though.
He is horrible, just awful. Just study the most minute details and you may pass.. Horrible
AVOID!!! I cannot stress this enough. I am a straight A student and pulled a B-. Test are totally unfair and nothing to do with course. Tells you that everyone does well, then after you can't drop the course anymore tells you the average is usually a C and if higher than he'll curve it down to one. Avoid.
Despite anything that has been said, despite his teaching ability or methods, despite how "hot" he may think he is, his arrogant, self-serving, holier-than-thou moral superiority complex makes him the reason I want to quit Sociology and school in general. If you're a girl, on the other hand, he will literally bend over backwards for you. Have fun!
I absolutely love Professor Youngs classes. I have taken 3 with him and would highly recommend him. People who are saying his tests are hard obviously don't put in the the average effort expected of an undergrad. Young's clarity is amazing and he goes above and beyond to outline his expectations straight away. Highly HIGHLY recommend this prof.
Took this course a couple of semesters ago and I STILL think about how terrible it was. Forced us to buy an over-priced and incredibly boring book simply because he wrote it (thanks BTW). The book hardly relates to the course subject. Further, he is arrogant, rude and to put it bluntly, has his head rammed so far up his own ass it's repulsive.
Have had young for 325 and 399, both are easy. An 80 gets you an A-, what more do you want? Read the book(s) and attend class, easy B+/A- for litle effort. He has always said he will never curve down, and has kept it so long as I have had him. While you do have to buy his book, they are more interesting than most course books.
This is the worst class i have ever taken. Took it last semester, it was super boring and his book was over priced
Absolutely HORRIBLE prof. He is incredibly rude, doesn't care about any student concerns, and is very high on himself. His notes are incredibly unorganized and lectures are hard to understand. His tests are horribly unfair (all questions have answers A-E) and relates to none of the textbook material, which are required just to sell his own book.
Extremely rude, extremely boring. Would not recommend at all.
Memorize the books- pulls specific questions from them. Is moderately engaging and class is usually interesting and enjoyable (but not always, particularly for the 1st section). Has the biggest ego of any prof I've had but he's generally pretty nice. Slides are disorganized and he's scatterbrained; jumps back and forth a lot which is confusing.
VERY arrogant and VERY rude. Picks about 4 students per class that he favourites and is a nightmare for the rest. He knows the subject well but has a bad temper and singles people out in class simply to embarrass them. Also makes you buy his own book for the course to make money off you. Wouldn't recommend him.
Dr. Y Is a really great 400 Level Professor. His 300 levels are a bit more difficult, but his 400 level are very fun, interactive and not hat hard. All I had was 1 group presentation worth 40% and one term paper worth 60%. Even on very sloppy presentations he gave you a B mark. As long as you play by the same rules his class is very easy for 425!.
This was an interesting course. There was a lot of reading to do for such short exams. You had to know things he may have mentioned only once in lecture for exams so you have to pay attention in class. His lectures are engaging and interesting with lots of examples outside of the text. You have to put in a good amount of work to get a good mark.
His sociology of sport class was soooo easy and I don't know anything about sports. I was concerned that I would be at a disadvantage but it is first a sociology class. He is actually very helpful and knowledgeable about the topic.
Very boring and useless class. If you're not an athlete, you will feel very excluded from his lectures and class discussions. You must memorize 500+ pages of textbook material, and his slides and lectures don't use the content from the books. Not to mention he is very disorganized. GPA killer- avoid. Best part is when Kelly Hrudey gives a lecture.
Not only is he the most arrogant proffesor at the university, this was one of the most boring classes I took. I am certainly not surprised at the sheer amount of negative reviews he has received on this page. The only exaplanation for the positive ones, is that he wrote them themselves.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all Sociology classes offered at UofC until this one....Kevin Young is arrogant, quotes himself, extremely dull lecture style. Not to mention he is obliviously fixated on publishing money & personal recognition.... not the quality of his teaching abilities.
Dr. Young evaluates work fairly, but is unpleasant to approach, frequently loses his temper and can be quite belittling to some students. He is a better instructor for a large lecture, as he is highly knowledgeable (e.g. SOCI 325). Group projects are a requisite for his 400 lvl classes and lack of team initiative will hurt your grade.
Kevin Young is the funniest professor I have come across at u of c- he's arrogant but is a good prof. this class is easy if you want a good grade. I don't think I learned anything but I enjoyed the class - tough on presentations but do the right amount of work and you'll get an A. Almost exactly like his 399 class- no crim aspect to it
By far the worst professor I had . Don't bother asking him any questions, he will belittle you and make you feel like an idiot.
Extremely rude to students
Dr. Young is passionate and earnest. The amount of care he puts into his lectures is obvious. The only time I witnessed any "rudeness" or "arrogance" was when he was responding to an equally rude student. He has a lot to prove in his specialty and some don't take it seriously; he is intense because he is passionate!
Kevin is a great teacher. Although he may come off a bit abrasive he truly means well. His constructive criticism may seem harsh, but is with the best of intentions. Other than he sometimes takes attendance, his classes are very good and straight forward. Tough marker so see him and get his opinion. Oh and he'll make you buy his book lol
Worst professor I've had in my 4 years at uofc.
Avoid at all costs
The reviews of Young are quite bad on here. He's not THAT bad, but this class is definitely not a GPA booster. You have to go to class because his notes suck. As previous reviews say, he spends half the class talking about his accomplishments. Test questions involve HIS experiences so make sure you listen when he boasts about his career...
His tests are pretty hard, he asks the most specific details on his tests. There are two textbooks and he expects you to memorize every detail.
This class isn't a GPA booster but I found the material interesting and enjoyable. A lot of the exam questions are from the lectures, so make sure you get those notes. He tells you what to expect on the exam, and if you attend the lectures and read the textbooks you should be good (textbooks are long). He's not as bad as he's made out to be.
Let me put it this way, I've never got less than an A in a Soci class, and I ended up getting a B- with Young. His readings are horribly dense, and he tests on the most irrelevant details. Avoid if possible, unless you're ready to treat this like a major core class.
Probably the only professor I've had that was this rude to students. God forbid you ask him a question. I don't know why he's a professor of he hates student interaction so much. One time he showed the entire class an email from a student that corrected him, and then spent 5 minutes refunding himself and attacking the student.
Dr. Young is an alright prof, but SOCI399 is NOT a GPA booster. The grades are made up of 3 multiple choice tests, but the questions can be nit-picky, and come predominantly from the textbooks (read them carefully at least twice). Only once did a student get %90 on a test and Dr. Young said "I don't think I could even do that." *hint* *hint*
Incredibly arrogant man. His tests are impossible they are full of minuscule facts that don't necessarily pertain to the material. he tells you at the beginning to not expect to do better than a 72% on them. there are plenty of facts hidden in the reading and his lecture slides are pretty bare so lectures are helpful.
So bad it's embarrassing. Kevin just seems desperate for a soapbox to stand on (to air his probable childhood injustices), and unfortunately, the poor souls who paid for his class are his captive audience for a whole semester.
Awful. Disrespectful. Arrogant. Corrected him in a private email and he all but threatened to bring in the academic probation officers and faculty head. A disgrace that he's paid to do whatever it is that he's doing. Memorize the chapters he assigns for exams and you'll get a good grade (he tests on every minute detail).
Don't think I've had a more rude professor at uofc. Not idea what his problem is.
Most of the exam was from the textbooks and theory related. He quotes himself and tests what he says in class. The theory questions were extremely difficult! So think before you select this course. Not a GPA booster. Treat it like a mandatory course. He's more interested in failing students than helping them through the course.
I've never rated a prof before, but I feel it is necessary to warn students about how terrible this prof is. A narcissist with a god complex. He's more interested in students reflecting his own interests and opinions than actually teaching you anything. Self-absorbed--loves to hear himself speak. A very unkind human who enjoys putting others down.
I have never rated a professor before but seeing all these negative comments is very shocking. Dr. Young is very approachable and extremely knowledgeable in this field. His test are multiple choice and are derived half from lectures and half from required readings. Although the test are very difficult he is always available to answer any questions.
I loved this class. It is very reading intensive, but if you do the work, you'll get the grade. Plus, it is interesting information. I don't know why he gets so many bad reviews. I found him to be very clear about the expectations, and he gave tons of hints for exams. Know theories.
His course is very interesting. The assignments allow you to study what interests you rather than just mindlessly reading whatever is assigned. While the grade components are large, they are not numerous which allows for this course to be challenging yet not stressful. You can tell he really cares about your work and will give you amazing feedback!
worst experience i have had with a professor, ever. He makes you feel very dumb and belittles you in front of the class if you ask something about a previous lecture or something he doesnt see as a "good" question. Hard to follow in the lecture and not a good vibe. Will NEVER take a class with him again.
Instruction quality was alright. My only main Concern was the book he wrote. Majority of the data in the textbook is cited as bing from 1980-1999 , which to me seems a little out dated. 3 multiple choice exams, real good way to ruin an interesting class. Kinda boring too ngl so get ready to stay awake, would not recommend this class.
I have had Dr. Young for two Soci classes & he was my fav prof out of my entire degree. His papers for 425 are easy as long as you stick to the guidelines he provides. I also encourage asking questions... he seems scary at first but you realize he's just being funny and then all the worries reside. He is helpful & tries to get to know his students!
I think people are a lot harder on Kevin than is necessary. I think the content is interesting, and he gives away the answers to 1-3 questions before every test. The tests are 50% readings and 50% lecture based, and if you want to do well you have to really try. He wasn't great by any means, but also wasn't as bad as people make him seem
Dr. Young is a fantastic prof! He tested on lectures and readings, so deffo do them! He is really great and clearly knows his stuff. The class happened during covid-19 and he was great about switching to online. Soci of sport is very understudied and really interesting! I would recommend and will deffo take again! 2 midterms and a final, all MC!
I'm in class with him online and it is the worst class I have ever taken. He hasn't taught once nor has he spoken to explain material in the class. He's very rude in terms of feedback and replying to emails, he makes you feel dumb. This class is based off of two papers and having to teach myself this class is a waste of my time and money.
Kevin Young is probably the worst prof I've have in my 3 years attending U of C. He has not taught a single lecture this semester, relying on D2L posts and readings posted with zero explanation. His criteria appear clear but your grade WILL NOT reflect what you expect. He comes across as pretentious, and makes you pay for a text written by himself.
Dr. Young is disrespectful, unprofessional and completely arrogant. Does not seem interested to teach at all. Would not recommend his class. Avoid if you can. Reading heavy - you will read about 250+ pages for each test.
Dr. Young is probably the most arrogant prof I've ever had. He did not transition well to the online format and does not teach any of his material, only posts boring slides. Don't expect him to be understanding or nice because he is very rude over email. He says he's "pro-student" but then assumes students are being deceitful for simple mistakes.
Terrible. The lowest level of instruction I have had in my four years of post-secondary. Young clearly has no interest in teaching, as he did not put in the effort to even lecture once the entire semester. Exams are easy and straight forward if you have done all the readings, which is a lot of reading.
Also took 399 with him but he clearly did not want to have to teach in an online format as he never taught anything, only posted some basic review slides at the beginning of the course, and we were marked on 2 essays (50% ea). I have no idea what I paid for in this class and I would've switched out but I needed the requirement. Rude & Condescending
By the looks of it this prof really stepped up their online classes for the Winter. The lectures were in person instead of powerpoints. There were six guest lectures from very cool guests to keep the lectures varied. This was a block week course so I'm not sure if it will be the same for regular semesters. Grading was surprisingly generous.
Professor Young's classes are based on two papers, so if you're not good at writing I would avoid his class. He marks fair and gives good feedback.
I have never rated a prof before... but I have to warn people before you are taking classes with this prof. He is very passive aggressive, even with the smallest mistake, he will make you feel belittle and dumb. This is not a GPA booster, treat is like a mandatory class. I am on my final year and I have never seen a prof this bad before.
Waste of money on this class if you actually want to learn something or have meaningful interaction with the instructor. As an online class, it was comprised of PDF documents of lecture information and the two course textbooks. All course work was self directed and self taught. Three Exams roughly 60-80 questions each.
Very rude professor. If you have to take his class - avoid talking to him at all, unless you like being talked rudely to.
Unethical Pompous self-indulgent character. He assigns reading from his own textbook, makes it exam material, does not cover content of that book in class, and forces students to buy his book. Doesn't test you on concepts, but the content of his book. If your sport interests don't 100% align with his, expect to fail.
Avoid this class if you can - the professor has some concerning teaching practices. For study help, try using Unstuck AI alongside the required textbook. Not the most engaging class, but you can still get a decent grade with dedication.
It's been years and years since... This man reserves a special place in my heart, filled with hatred, spite and loathing. Students are just a cash machine to him. Requiring students to buy your work, and pay for texts, is ethically wrong and a conflict of interest. The textbook was barely used. Should have been investigated and terminated.
