I had this guy at calpoly slo. It is hard to concentrate during his lectures since he screams so much. His blackboard use is poor. Sit in the front, so you can understand what he is doing. Examples straight from the textbook. Not very good at applications. A real math nerd without much teaching experience or a phd from a decent school.....!

He was helpful, friendly because he took his time to go around showing how to do it right. Though it's a hard subject, he didnt get much HW,and his test was even easier than problem in book. He gave note, and good examples for sections with clear explanation. Regardless his extremely good appearence, he was still the most wonderful teacher at EVG
A nerd that tries so hard to please any one. Examples are pretty straighforward and easy. You can tell that he is new because he writes really easy tests. The one that loses is the student b/c you learn very little with this guy.If you care about your preparation, look for a more seasoned instructor, one that is not in a popularity contest.
this class is quite simple, if you turn in everything on time, listen to class lectures, you will be okay
He is sooo cute very helpful and keeps the class interesting.
Good teacher. he give e.c. if u need.. nice man
okay he is the best teacher! Not only is he hot but he takes the time to explain the problems and gives a lot of examples. Its an easy class to take and pass. Just pay attention take good notes and you'll pass for sure. oh and he also gives his students the chance to do extra credit so that helps a lot of students pass. u'll luv math after this cls
I had this teacher as a permanent substitute for the last month or so of class. I did not like his teaching style - he was like a talking textbook with none of his own insights or shortcuts for the problems - probably because he is a new teacher. He was not helpful in answering questions or encouraging the asking of them either.
I'm currently taking Math71. His lectures are short, clear, and extremely organized. It's very easy to review for tests. The class time is used effectively since he highly focuses on teaching. No personal issues are involved. Ah, of you have questions, go to his office hours. He's willing to help.
He is extremely clear on lectures and his notes are very organized. Tests are bit weird since he gives out like 10 quest/10 pts each but if u pay attention in class, youll probably will do well. He is very helpful. He helps u after/before class. This is a teacher who u can tell is very passionate and knows wat he's talking about. Very professional!
Organizes lectures, homework, tests, and grades very well. However, his lectures have no quality or insight, which reflect his lack of experience-learning from his vague lectures is equivalent to reading the book. He grades homework, quizzes, and tests like there is no tomorrow; the smallest increment of mistakes can result in major losses in pts.
I took this class as a high schooler and he wasnt that hard. He makes it easier to understand the textbook. Extremely organized and test are from question from the book.
He is really a good teacher. If u pay little attention in his class, sure u will pass this class.
very nice teacher. always willing to help. COOL. just pay attention in class then you'll get a good grade. =) i highly recommend. you'll learn a lot
he cool man!!!
He is young but is very professional. His lectures are basic and straight forward. If you come to class everyday and do your hw, then you can't get less than a C. He is a friendly guy, if you need some extra help, come and see him!
great teacher and veryy cute! pretty blue eyes and super funny! gives good notes and lets u use a sheet of notes on tests...quizzes are group quizzes so u can pretty much copy someone elses quiz... one or two projects where u have to write your own world problems..very friendly.. will give u extra credit and helpful even in office hours!take him! =
HOT HOT HOT!!!! he is probably the best looking teacher on campus. At time his attractiveness could get distracting lol just kidding, but he is very helpful and if you need help and want to pass the class go see him during his office hours. If you need extra credit he will give ot to you. His lecture were also very clear and understandable!
what can i say he is one of the guys. excellent teacher loves the subject of math. Very brilliant he is 25 or 26 teaching calculus 2. highly recomend him
Peyton Manning look-a-like. I guess he's hot, if you're into 6'5 160lbs teacher with an erasable marker in his hand. Lecture straight from the book so I'm not sure why you have to attend class. Incredibly difficult grader, will not curve. Will only give EC if you BEG4IT. P.S. Asians are not good @math I got a C and I'm Asian!!
He is very professional and takes the time to help students to understand math. He uses many examples from the book and if you do the homework and study the book, you'll do well. Gives mad points for showing work on tests and correct answer is only 1 point. I got an A. :D
He is cute. lol many time that was my reason for being there. His class easy, Do the homework and you will be fine. The test are easy. I took his class last summer. I thought I got a B, I thought I had done better.
McCandles is one of the best teacher in math.He explains everything so slowly and clearly.I strongly recommend him for any math class.--------------by the Afghan.
Haha lets just say he's easy on the eyes. He takes time to help his students and his lecture is very well oraganize and helpful. You have to buy a book and a online mathlab for homework. His class is pretty easy. Just as long as you do the work. I RECOMEND YOU TAKE HIS CLASS! FORSURE YOU'LL GET THE GRADE YOU WANT.
This teacher is very anal when you miss class like twice in like the whole semester. He will drop you right away and won't even give you a chance. Its either he didn't like me or he always had something up his a**. I highly do not recommend this teacher, oh and by the way he is NOT cute at all. That's just gross.. checking out your teacher? ughh..
Ignore that person down there...HE'S SO HOT!! And he's a great professor. He'll go over basically every hwk problem and help you step by step. His workload is pretty light and his tests are always 9-10 questions. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
This is a great teacher!!! I took him for summer math and I learned more in 5 weeks than I have ever learned in 4 years of High school! He gets straight to the point, no BS. Keeps you on your feet and makes the class go by fast. Do your homework and you will be fine. Usually the homework is harder than the tests and quiz's
This teacher is really easy to learn from but he gets very but hurt if you call him a bird for some reason......
He's a very kind and down to earth guy who explains the lessons very well. The grading is fair and class can be boring at times but it is usually pretty busy and requires a lot of brain. Make sure you use graph paper or you wont get points. I'll be taking his class again next semester!
He's a nice guy, very helpful and would spend more than half of the class time explaining (doing) your homework. He doesn't make the class interesting. To pass his class, do your homework, ask questions (doesn't hurt), visit him during office hours, make a note card(he allows them) and give an honest effort. PS: He doesn't look like a teacher.
The little girls who sit in the front are the ones that drool over his debateable looks. This class was mostly online so it was so LAME! He moves really quick but doesn't care about attendence AT ALL! some people just come in 5 times the whole semester just for the tests.
Makes calculus crystal clear and straightforward. Is very practice and examples oriented. Highly recommended. Definitely not what you expect a math nerd to look like.
Soooooooooooo good looking!!! Extremly good looking. Hot hot hot hot hot. Take him just cause he is so cute! I failed the class probably cause I was staring into his eyes too much. Amazingly good looking person. And did I mention HOT
Had him for Calc 2. If you're good at math, he's a very easy teacher to take. Very straightforward in his lectures. Really good at answering questions. Uses examples A LOT, which I like. Good-looking too, lol. Overall a good teacher.
The class is pretty hard since i hate math, but i passed with a C. I honestly thought i was going to fail so he must b a easy grader. I took it for summer. he not that entertaining but all i care is that i still passed.
Hard teacher, doesnt use or explain examples from the book, goes at a really fast pace half the class either is failing or has D's
Very hard teacher. He uses his own examples and brings new methods that are not even on the book. The homework is a waste of time since we use mathlab online, it basictly gives you the answers. His attitude is not the best either. I would not reccomend this teacher.
REally Good teacher he know what he's doing and overall helpful
Good guy. just do the homework and worksheets and you are set. the tests are very self explanitort
he said that we can use a cheat sheet notecard for the tests and exams but on the day of those tests and exams he takes our notecards away because we had examples of formulas....he actually explains later that he wanted us to use the card for DEFINITIONS which is pretty stupid....a list of definitions as note for a math class? -_-
I cant stop looking at his large forehead in class! its too distracting
Who the heck would think he's hot? I have a feeling that he wrote those reviews himself.....well anyways DONT TAKE HIS CLASS! YOU WILL REGRET IT! THERE ARE A TON OF BETTER MATH TEACHERS AT EVC! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME TAKING THIS GUY!
He does this "all or nothing" thing when correcting worksheets. He gives you 6 word problems then he will not give you any credit if you leave 1 question blank or get it wrong. Its a do or die type of thing
Horrible...enough said
he uses the online book to keep account of who does homework BUT! he does not teach us the stuff that we are expected to do in homework. also he grades really hard you can get a 13 out of 15 and that would result in a C for a test
you have a better chance learning from youtube rather than this guy aka big bird
Horrible teaching methods and horrible explanations to frequently asked questions. How did he ever get a job teaching?
Basically assumes we can finish a problem off when he only does it half way. Whats the point of asking a question if he wont finish it completely regardless of what we know. Grading on the tests are kinda weird
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
he always plays his students by favorites and disregards the rest
i regret taking this class so much dont take this class unless you want to fail!
lol, someone is bitter to leave all those reviews VVV. mr. m is a good professor. makes math enjoyable. and it's not impossible to get an A.
the subject isn't easy but he is very helpful and goes over hw problems at the beg of each class period. we have weekly quizzes. and we're allowed a note card for the test. awesome professor! i wish he taught calc III too.
material isn't easy but he is very helpful and makes the subject enjoyable. we have weekly quizzes and you gotta keep up with the hw! overall, a very cool professor. wish he taught calcIII too
math didnt seem too hard or difficult until taking his class. he is horrible!!! you can ask questions but he doesnt even finish explaining he assumes that you automatically understand just because he writes it down on the board. his grading is so unfair and he is always late for class
Proffesor McCandless is a very good teacher. He is very knowledgable of Calculus and is willing to help you if you are lost. Calculus isn't easy so you will have to put in A LOT of work if you plan to do well. Will replace your lowest test score with your final score (provided you do well on the final). One of the best teachers I've ever had :D
Great teacher. On test you get a side of paper as notes and there's weekly quizzes. He explains everything and does examples very well, just gotta go to class and pay attention. 50 bucks the guy below me is named Quang.
take him he explains if you ask...and if you think he doesnt finish explaining ask him to do the whole problem..JUST ASK..attend or you'll be confused..do the MYMATHLAB because it will add up...He's great once you get use to his way of teaching..i dont like math, but i liked having him because it made it less of a drag to do.
I looked forward to coming to this class every day! This professor is awesome. Very approachable & helpful. TAKE HIM!! & on an unrelated note, I think that is Quang's post as well VV haha
This Prof. is AWESOMEEEEEE and very helpful. The questions in pop quizzes were in your homework assignments. He made this class (Calc 2) enjoyable and I really loved ittttt.......and hey guys, how do you know that is Quang? :|
It's calculus II. Everything, including my overall grade, is prefect.
Great professor. I highly recommend him. He's willing to help as much as possible and encourages his students. He is always at school whether in class, in his office, or at tutoring. He's always around when you need him. He breaks down the math problems so that they are easy to understand. Do the work and come to class you'll pass for sure.
took his math 13 class over the summer, long class, doesnt really let you out early, goes over problem so everyone understands, nice guy, straight forward quizzes and tests, I got an A, lots of hw but it is manageable
He is very knowledgeable about math but he is not a good teacher. He says to ask questions, but when you do, he makes you feel stupid for asking. I watched several times as people asked him to explain something, and he outright refused, saying 'we just did that yesterday.' Over half the class is failing. That's not the class...it's the teacher.
Great teacher! He's very approachable, understanding, and generous. He def knows his stuff and really wants you to pass his class.lets you have note card on exams&final, gives extra credits, and will replace the lowest exam with final.See him at his office if you have any trouble in studying. Def gonna take his class for calcII next semester!
He is really amazing. He helped me a lot in this section. Even thought his tests are hard but you still can do it if you study hard. Quizzes every week and it's easy. I'm going to take his class in next season which is Cal II :)
Nice guy, really wants his students to do well BUT he is a straight shooter. Grades are based on difficult tests and occasional quiz. Even though he was nice I do not think I will take him again. His teaching style does not mingle well with my learning style.
He is nice and very helpful. I take both his Cal 1 and Cal 2 classes. Quizzes are easy and tests are a little bit hard. But you still can do it well if you pay attention and do all the homework. Take his class if you really want to learn. If you just want to pass, don't take his class!
Kevin is an extremely nice guy with high interest in math. I sometimes missed his class like twice a week but his lecture is very thorough so i never really miss out on anything. You don't need a book either. Plus, he had a few tutors come in during class to help so you can't screw up there.
Professor McCandless is a great guy and a great teacher. He is very passionate about Math, and will always help out those who ask. I learned a lot in his class over a few months. My only issue wit him would be that he is a tough grader.
Had a great time learning math by his teachings. He is clear and teaches step by step. I took the online class so there was excessive logging into the online material. Overall good experience.
he was pretty good, really good actually. the only problem is the tests... they would always get me. They werent hard, but you need to study
He's a great professor :) I took him for both Calculus 1 and 2, and I learned a lot of things from him. The only thing is that his tests are always hard, so you really need to listen to the lectures and study for the tests. Otherwise, the quizzes every week are easy. And luckily, he's not a tough grader :) I'd recommended him if you love math :)
He has been so hard since the last semester. His lectures are sometimes not clear and hard to understand. The tests are surely hard with a lot of proofs and most of them aren't in the homework, You have to be a good self-learner or you would find it hard to get a high grade in his class. I would NOT recommend him to my friends.
Great teacher! He is always willing to help, all you have to do is ask. offers half a grade extra credit through service learning. easy quiz every week just be sure to do the hw since its primarily based on that. Tests are a bit hard and long but if you study you will not have a problem. great teacher!
I read the reviews and decided to take Math 022 (Trig)w/McCandless. Big mistake!I had to withdraw along with a dozen other students–I think only 6 students remain. He did not lecture, instead he had student groups present text problems. These student presentations are the lectures. His tests/quizzes are hard. Straightforward course, but tough teacher.
Good teacher. Had him as a summer class. Intense! But nonetheless learned so much. All these people complaining about how they regret taking this class clearly want A+'s handed to them. Work hard and you will pass. Plain and simple.
Tough class due to the instructor plus only six weeks for summer term.
A strict instructor. You will have to work hard to pass his class. Exams are NOT easy, however, he is fair and he is helpful during his office hours. Plan to attend office hours and do every homework to increase your chances for a good grade.
Horrible teacher, doesn't teach at all, makes you do it by yourself then expects you to get it. Tests/exams are difficult ONLY take him if you are good at math
Doesn't teach; Excessive homework; No extra credit; Harsh grading; No partial-credit; 2 absences &he drops you; Two-faced, If student is black or lesbian, forget about passing. High rate of failure: Weeks in advance, he was prepared to fail almost all of his students. Fails most students -thinks he's doing you a favor. Not even a real professor!
dropped this after the first week of spring 13', he doesnt lecture rather pairs students together in groups of 5-6 and makes them do the problems on the board ... he is smart but kinda does make a student feel bad for asking a question...
He assigned Webassign which is online homework. Is very Stressful. Don't take his class.
McCandless is a cocky teacher and unfair in grading and teaching styles. He expects us to take the notes by ourselves on webassign and go to class knowing everything, he does not explain or go over the material thoroughly enough. He basically told us that he knows most of us will fail the class. He expects everyone to learn the same way.
I truly don't know where to begin with this guy. Stay away from this teacher unless Math-13 is the only class you're taking.
He really doesn't seem to care if his students pass or not. Many of the problems on the exams he never explained before, and he's rude when you ask him questions in class. Tough grader, no extra credit, and excessive homework.
AMAZING teacher I took him for Algebra 2 and did not pass because I was lazy but decided to take him again and actually put effort into it and passes. Took him for Stats. the class itself is hard. A lot of work but but you know what you sign up for. Grading is strict you need to earn your grade. Do the work and your set. McCandless is very helpfull
Great professor, extremely fair. Wants his students to succeed. Takes the time to make sure you understand. Very good at explaining and clarifying. Can earn an A if you are willing to work hard.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He is really rude to students who ask questions and most of the time just makes them more confused. The exams are hard and there is no extra credit.
I took his class and got a B. Im usually an A student. Im not sure how many people actually passed. His grading is very hard. Cool guy, but I can see why some say he is rude. He doesn't really "teach" math, he just solves the examples from the book. He can be very unreasonable at times and assigns every HW problem He makes you hate going to class.
He gave quizzes every week unless he's giving an exam. He doesn't explain any concepts, just solves some examples.
Makes it very difficult for you to pass the class, he has you do all the homework and doesn't give you credit for doing any of it! If you fail any test then he will fail you in the class...
He really doesn't like his students and he wonders why no one applies for his classes and why half his class dropped halfway through the semester. I had to teach myself everything and he does not respect his students. He always goes about really passive aggressively. Don't take his class.
When he does problems in class, he does not finish them all the way. He expects you to know everything from the past, but I would like a refresher from time to time. I was scared to ask questions in that class.
Mr. McCandless is a great teacher. His lectures are clear and very easy to comprehend. He is understanding and very helpful. He provides many different recourses for help and support. He makes the homework and tests very doable. Would definitely recommend him as a teacher for your next math class.
He's extremely organized. Love it!!
I had to take Math 13 3 times. Third times a charm, because this prof. was wonderful! He's very helpful, explains clearly and will definitely help you as long as you ask for it and are willing to put in the work. Tests and homework are fair but keep only if you attend the class will you be able to pass. Not much group work.
Do not take his online class. One word HORRIBLE. expects way too much for an online class as in filling out a binder and wanting to know what you do everyday. He doesn't tell you what you need to know for the test so you basically learn everything from the book and then the tests are completely different. Worst online Professor ever
I hated all math before taking a class with Dr. McCandless. He has a very set criteria for grading, you may be doing a lot of work at times but if you keep up with assignments you should have no problem. By far the best math teacher I have come across and helped me reach goals in math I thought were unattainable for myself. Definitely recommend!
Took him for winter session for stats and lets say it was like drinking water from a fire hydrant. I was not mentally prepared spending 3 or 4 hours each of homework each day not including studying. There is lots of homework and test are very difficult. If you have outside obligations I urge you to consider taking this class.
Do not waste your time. McCandless is an extremely harsh grader and he does not care about his students. He assigns so much homework it shows how inconsiderate he is of his students' personal lives. Exams were extremely difficult and most of my classmates were very lost. Find a different professor!!!
So far I have taken 3 classes with this professor which goes to show he is definitely my favorite. I took this class over spring intersession and it was definitely not easy however, the quick pace does help retain information. He teaches you everything with the calculator which is super helpful. Overall awesome professor with clear lectures & tests
If you have to take a math class, this is the the guy you want. I took him for Algebra and stats intersession. He is super student oriented and will answer any question you have on a specific problem. He expects you to work hard and if you do, not only will you get a good grade, you will actually know the material. Do the work and show up on time!
worst teacher, never take him
Hey guys, he is real nice teacher to be honest. If you guys ever done all the homework ( like I did, I have 100% score on Mathconnect) , that would be an easy A. I have to say I your attitude decides your grade in his class.
Even though this class is online, he does not teach whatsoever. You need to learn everything yourself and there are at least 3 hours worth of homework due per day. I just don't see the point in taking this class when you literally have to teach yourself everything. However, He is a nice person and is very responsive to emails.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. There are NO lectures, meaning he will hand you a book and expect you to teach yourself. He will assign weekly discussion posts unrelated to mathematics, on top of heavy homework assignments, time consuming weekly quizzes, and bi-weekly exams. Tough grader on exams; correct answers does NOT equal full cred.
it's a boring class, he doesn't care if you pass or not. please don't take his class, lecture suck he doesn't even use the book so awful teacher.
took him for summer 2018 for a math class to skip a grade in highschool, as a lazy/ a ninth grade student at the time, class was easy. Hw was a lot but it was easyy, and tests were really easy, he gave me hints during the test sometimes when I was the last person. In class, we did hw and cw as a group. Great way of teaching. Remember Im not smart
Online class:5-6 assignments due every Friday, you have to submit handwritten step-by-step answers for each question. Quiz every 2 weeks, NO open notes, no TI-84 calculator (has to be standard calculator), quizz were not multiple choose. Lockdown Brower camara must show face/head and hands/paper.
very difficult human to deal with. always found something new to complain about. had to drop the class because he kept giving me 0 on everything and I had to pay $1700 out of my own pocket to take it elsewhere and not deal with him. steer away from this professor and save yourself.
